Residents of a Stoke retirement village are feeling “fearful and vulnerable” after a recent spate of

vehicle break-ins.

Four vehicles at the Stoke Retirement Village were broken into on the night of Monday April 29 and earlier this month more cars were targeted.

Now they have been told they

should be putting steering wheel braces in their cars.

One elderly resident, who does not wish to be named, says the damage to her vehicle was so severe that she has been without her car for more than three

weeks. This has left her relying on others to help her get around.

The break-in came at the worst possible time for the resident, coming after a lengthy hospital stay earlier this year and now having a relative fighting a serious illness.

“It just about broke me altogether, if it wasn’t for the people in the village that have been helping, I don’t know where I’d be. My nerves are shot.”

Challenge laid down for striking teachers Kate Russell While schools around Nelson close their doors for strike action next Wednesday, one lesser known education provider will remain open helping the students who are perhaps the most difficult to reach.

Furthermore, they are encouraging teachers to spend the day with them - instead of heading to the picket line.

Now in their 21st year of operation, Youth Nelson provides education to 13-16-year olds for whom the mainstream school environment doesn’t suit.

Staff member Daniel Hawke has put out a call for teachers to come see what they do, in what he describes as a grossly underfunded, yet extremely valuable education service.

All primary and secondary teachers in the region have voted to taken part in the education industry’s biggest ever strike on May 29.

Primary teachers have already gone on strike twice in this bargaining round - in August and November.

“We back the teachers. We understand what’s going on. We know what they need,” says Daniel.

“This is more of a call to attention to not just Youth Nelson, but to what all alternative education is going through.”

Youth Nelson have little staff turnover, with manager Maree Shalders being there for 20 years.

However, in this time, Daniel says there has been little or no funding change.

“It’s the respect and the recognition of the ministry and our peers in the teaching industry.”

There are 17 students on their roll.

They come from Nelson College, Nelson College for Girls and Nayland College.

“They are all here for various reasons,” Daniel says.

“People think they’re here because they are naughty kids. They’re not.

None are involved in the youth justice system. Being in a big classroom just doesn’t work for them. They don’t get the attention or the relationships they need.

“Here, they do the work, because they do it for us. We’re they ones

“If there are any PE teachers out there, come out and have a game against the kids. They’d love it. That would mean the world to them, to have their old teachers come and play against them.

Break-ins leave retirement village residents ‘on edge’ FROM PAGE 1 She says the offenders targeted older model vehicles, smashing the rear windows in all four cars to gain access but, so far, no one has been apprehended.

Police told her to collect the broken pieces of the window without touching them. But they never collected them and later told her that because the doors had been opened to atmospheric conditions it would be impossible to remove any fingerprints.

“I don’t think it’s been taken seriously. Theft of belongings, unless it’s on your person, seems to be quite low on the priority list.”

A police spokesperson says that part of their investigation included reviewing CCTV footage.

The resident says that the footage apparently shows three

Museum buys up CBD land Staff reporter The trust which governs the Nelson Provincial Museum has purchased CBD land as part of plans for a new multimillion dollar facility to house the the region’s collections.

The purchase comes as the museum’s Isel Park Research Facility, which currently houses the Nelson Tasman regional collection, is at the end of its useful life and not suitable to safely store the region’s collection or staff.

Interim chair of the Tasman Bay Heritage Trust, Emma Thompson, says the newly purchased land, which is currently used for carparking and located on Church St, is an exciting step forward.

She says that the museum’s purpose is: “To care for, strengthen and make widely accessible, the taonga and heritage collections of Nelson Tasman; and to create unforgettable experiences that stimulate awareness, celebrate diversity, excite action and entertain.”

Emma says the upcoming capital works project will ensure the safe and appropriate storage of the history of our region.

“Securing this land brings us one step closer to the realisation of this important goal.”

Interim chief executive Olivia Hall says the project has been underway for a number of years, including undertaking feasibility studies, assessing future storage requirements, and working with the councils to establish the best location.

“Now, with the purchase of the land, the next phase is to not only fundraise and firm up the details of the capital works building project, but also to take the concept to the community for their input.”

Nelson declares climate emergency Jonty Dine

The Isel Park facility was opened in 1973 and houses the region’s archive and research library of rare, original and one-off manuscripts, books, maps, photographs and records, as well as conservation of various heritage objects and taonga spanning more than 100 years.

A series of reports have addressed the issues of appropriate collection storage, including a detailed engineering evaluation which revealed areas of concern in meeting building standards.

The total build cost of the new facility is projected to be between $11 to $12 million and will require funding from a

variety of sources.

Nelson City Council has earmarked $3 million in its 2018-2028 Long Term Plan (LTP), and Tasman District Council has noted their intention to review a contribution to the building in the next review of their LTP. Both councils continue to support the activity of the museum through yearly operational grants.

Olivia says she is looking forward to progressing the plans with the community.

“To ensure that the new archives, research and collection storage is reflective of their aspirations for the care and protection of the past, and the future of their region.”

A “state of climate emergency” has been declared in Nelson.

At a council meeting last week councillors voted to declare the emergency due to mounting advice from scientists and the United Nations that there is a small window for action to avoid the most damaging effects of climate change.

By declaring a State of Climate Emergency, the council joins 529 councils in ten countries, as well as the United Kingdom and Irish parliaments, in recognising that action on climate change needs to be prioritised at all levels of society and government.

As a signatory to the Local Government Climate Change Declaration, council last week welcomed the Government’s Climate Change Response (Zero Carbon) Amendment Bill as evidence of the high priority that central government is also attaching to the issue.

Council already has a programme of work on climate change underway, with more planned as outlined in the Annual Plan consultation document.

The State of Climate Change Emergency will emphasise NCC’s intention to play a key role in leading the community toward a resilient and low emissions future and implementing adaptive measures that will help to manage and minimise risk.

Mayor Rachel Reese says that the Annual Plan hearings last week have highlighted the strong support from submitters for urgent action on climate change.

“Our vision is to be the smart little city and climate change leadership requires smart thinking and proactive decision making,” says Rachel.

$500,000 fire fund ‘fizzles’ out Locally Owned and Operated

A Government programme announced in February to use jobless people to help clean up after the Nelson and Tasman fires has been labelled a “farce and a fizzer”

by Nelson MP Nick Smith.

The $500,000 grant and programme was designed to provide 10,000 hours of support for fire clean-up work in the wake of the Tasman fires.

The programme was approved by cabinet on February 18 and announced by Social Development Minister Carmel Sepuloni.

Nick says it was championed as

generous Government assistance for the fires by the Prime Minister and the Ministers of Internal Affairs, Civil Defence and Primary Industries.

“It turns out that not one dollar was spent and not one hour of work was done.”

The scheme was quietly shut down on 7 May. “This fire fund for Nelson and Tasman has been a complete fizzer. It was designed to make the Government look good but was impractical and unworkable.

It is like so many programmes of the Government, whether it be Kiwibuild or Zero Student Fees, where much was promised but little delivered.

Nick says that the Government was told in February that the fund was not likely needed.

Nelson has only 4 percent unemployment and autumn was the peak of the apple and kiwifruit harvest so there would be very few appropriatelyskilled people on benefits to rebuild driveways and fences and to restore pasture and landscaping.

“It was foolish of the Government to continue with the scheme when property owners, council and myself told them it would not work.”

Nick says the Government

would have been better to commit this $500,000 directly into fixing the damage Fire and Emergency NZ did to create firebreaks to contain the fire.

“This work was absolutely required but it has been unfair on property owners leaving them at the mercy of the Mayoral Relief Fund and private donations for these repairs.

“The Government has dismissed calls to fund these property repairs, required by the damage caused by the fire breaks, on the basis of this $500,000 Taskforce Green Scheme being available.

They need to reconsider now it

has been withdrawn.

Nick says Fire and Emergency NZ and the Nelson Tasman Civil Defence team did a good job of managing the extraordinary emergency and says he acknowledges the Government contributions to the Mayoral Relief Fund.

“However, this $500,000 grant and scheme for Taskforce Green was an unhelpful distraction and an impractical response to the fire emergency.

The Government needs to listen better in major emergencies to the views from locals about what will and will not work.”

Fundraising for Nelson Coastguard Nelson restaurant The Styx is holding an event on Sunday to raise money for the Nelson Coastguard’s much-needed new vessel.

Volunteer-staffed Nelson Coastguard has to raise just under one million dollars by the end of this year to enable it to place an order for the $1.3 million vessel it needs to continue its mission of saving lives at sea.

“We have one of the largest geographical areas to cover in New Zealand with potentially some of the most challenging sea conditions to operate in,” says Nelson Coastguard President Pete Kara. “But our current boat just isn’t what’s needed to cope with the increasing demands for our help.

Nelson Coastguard brought 88 people home safely in the past

year, rescued from a wide range of circumstances, most of them getting into trouble while using craft such as inflatable toys, kayaks, and small vessels.

Overall Coastguard NZ receives just 12 percent of its budget from the Government and this does not include capital costs for new vessels. Replacement vessels are funded from community grants and fundraising

“We really need the whole community to get in behind our fundraising efforts,” says Pete.

The Styx owner Dana Hanson says the event, which runs from 3pm until 6pm on Sunday, 26 May, is meant to bring the community together to support the efforts of Coastguard Nelson.

“Nelson Coastguard is our neighbour on the waterfront, and we watch them volunteer their

nights and weekends to ensure everyone’s safety on the sea.”

There will be live music, food, and raffle prizes.

Sophie strives to thrive with Summit Charles Anderson Editor

When 15-year-old Sophie Hampson made the finals of the national Shakespeare competition, her mum Danielle was very proud - but there was also a problem.

“It was a $475 bill and only 10 days to pay it.”

However, she found out about Summit Real Estate’s Strive to Thrive scholarship, which gives $500 to young Nelsonians with a dream.

Danielle knew that the arts were Sophie’s life and wanted to give her the opportunity to compete in Wellington.

“I thought she definitely does enough to warrant it.”

So did the Summit team, who saw her application and wanted to support someone who wasn’t just a sports team.

“We thought it was about time we look at other people, not just sports, which is what Strive to Thrive is all about,” says Summit’s general manager Stewart Henry.

It’s one she wants to continue with her acting.

“I feel like the friends you make out of it are great and the experience of being on stage can be nerve wracking, but it just heightens all your emotions.”

Now she will go to Wellington for an opportunity to be selected to perform at the Globe Theatre in London.

NCG makes magic theatre comeback with witches Kate Russell Reporter

Nelson College for Girls is breaking an eight-year production hiatus with a spell-binding musical with a message.

The Witches of Eastwick will be taking to the Theatre Royal stage for five shows only from 29 May until 1 June.

Based on the 1984 novel and subsequent 1987 film, The Witches of Eastwick is about three smalltown friends (Alexandra, Jane and Sukie) who have each lost the man in their lives.

The stealthy Daryl Van Horne soon arrives on the scene and begins courting each of them, telling them that they are witches.

But as the friends spend more time at Daryl’s mansion learning about their powers, they begin to worry about his intentions.

It’s the first time the musical has been staged in Nelson and director

Konstantina Tsina says it was a fitting choice for their come-back.

“We wanted something with strong female roles, and we wanted it to be funny as well as have a message. It’s a musical that pokes fun at gender stereotypes.”

The cast of 52 also includes eight students from Nelson College, and many will also be bringing their experience from the Nelson Youth Theatre Company to the stage.

Konstantina says there were various reasons for the school’s eight-year break from staging a musical.

“Staff changes as well as the school being really involved in The Big Sing meant that we didn’t have the time or energy to put into a musical. But we are excited to be back into it,” she says.

“We’ve been working on it since term one and they have all been so committed. We’ve got a wealth of talent at the school.”

The Witches of Eastwick is on at the Theatre Royal from 29 May - 1 June.

Half of Natureland’s tuatara dead

Half of Natureland’s eight Tuatara have died over the last two years, leading the councilfunded zoo to bring in experts to see what is going wrong.

The latest death was earlier this month and it immediately lead to an internal review of the care for tuatara at Natureland, says acting director of Natureland, Grant Abel.

It comes as Natureland continues its mission to get its annual funding by Nelson City Council increased to $243,000 a year.

Grant told council that the tuatara habitat had not been upgraded, which was part of the reason it needed a funding increase.

Trust chair Alan Hinton said Natureland could not sign a contract for the currently proposed amount of $170,000 as the trust would be insolvent

by September or October.

Individual tuatara died in August 2017, March 2018, and April 2019. A fourth death that occurred earlier this month is believed to be an unrelated accident as a tuatara was found beneath a rock within the habitat.

“It is believed that the burrow which the tuatara made for itself collapsed,” says Grant.

Natureland received the eight tuatara from the Ngati Koata Trust. After being notified of the loss of the tuatara, the trust has recommended Natureland seek the expert advice of tuatara specialist Dr Nicola Nelson of Victoria University in Wellington.

“Tuatara metabolism’s are very slow which means that health issues that arise for these very special creatures can be slow to develop and challenging to identify,” says Grant.

PINK SHIRT DAY: Schools around Nelson swapped their uniforms for pink attire on Friday to take a stand against bullying. Celebrated annually around the globe, Pink Shirt Day began in Canada in 2007 when two students took a stand against homophobic bullying, after a peer was bullied for wearing a pink shirt. In New Zealand, Pink Shirt Day aims to create schools, workplaces and communities where all people feel safe, valued and respected. It is led by the Mental Health Foundation who say bullying can have serious and ongoing impacts on people’s mental health and wellbeing. Wayne Jennens needed some cornet players.

So, the Nelson City Brass secretary put out the call in Europe. In reply he got Douglas Couchman, from Scotland, and Sacheus Holloway-Jones, from Wales.

“I’ve always wanted to visit New Zealand,” says Douglas. “I like playing too so it seemed like a good idea.”

Sacheus says, even in the winter in New Zealand it’s warmer than the UK in the summer.

The pair had never met but saw each other in Dubai airport with cornets slung over their backs and they put two and two together.

Now they are here for 12 months to play for the band and their first big test comes this weekend as part of the Nelson Marlborough West Coast’s brass band association regional contest. The event sees four bands compete for the title, but Wayne says it’s also just a great chance to catch up with players from around the South Island.

On Saturday there is a street march at lunchtime starting at Rutherford Hotel and going to Church Steps. Then in the evening there is a concert at 7pm at the Theatre Royal.

It will be a chance for Sacheus to stand out as the band’s soprano cornet player.

“I like playing loud and high. You can always hear it – but there is a fine line between good and bad.”

Wayne says the pair have been a great fit for the band. Now the challenge is to convince them to stay for longer.

This is why I am so enthusiastic about my job in National as Caucus Policy Chair, leading policy development. Each weekend this month I have been at party conferences in Invercargill, the Hutt Valley, and Paihia in Northland doing the work on our plans for New Zealand’s future.

I would, of course, much prefer to be in Government, but Opposition has one advantage. The role as a Minister is so pressured that the day to day work gives little opportunity to get out and engage with New Zealanders and think long term about the future direction of our country.

I am enjoying talking to thousands of New Zealanders about the changes needed for our country to do better.

National has learnt from Labour’s failure to do this work in Opposition. In their first year they passed more National Bills through Parliament than from their own Labour or support parties. A major weakness of this Government was the lack of a detailed plan. They have had to form over 200 working groups costing taxpayers over $500m to try and backfill the hole. Time and money have been wasted, such as the $10m spend on Michael Cullen and co on the Capital Gains Tax Review Group that has now been dropped. The

same thing has happened with the Welfare Advisory Group report where only 1% of the recommended changes have been implemented.

Labour’s few policies like Kiwibuild were never properly thought through. The original promise of 100,000 homes costing only $300,000 sounded great.

But far from the 1,000 promised in the first year they have built only 80 in 18 months. Most were already being built and the average price has been $540,000. The idea that the Government could build houses faster and cheaper than private building companies was always going to fail.

Rob myERs I’m Rob, I’m currently studying social work at NMIT and have been volunteering at the Hub for a month now. Whilst here I’ve been involved in putting together a survey to see what the local community would like to see from the Hub, it’d be great if you could help us out and fill one in! During my short time here I’ve been really impressed with the efforts of Mark and the team and look forward to contributing wherever needed.

It’s just fantastic to have been involved in getting the Centre up and running again for the Tahunanui Community over the past 4 months.

Our Hall and Boardroom have seen a pleasing increase in usage so far from event planners, government organizations, woman’s’ support group, art group, fitness groups (senior, yoga, pilates, 8 week challenge). We even have a Brain Gymnastic class currently running which has been hugely beneficial, especially to those who could be potentially at risk from brain disease. It’s been well attended and loads of fun.

The much-loved Founders Book Fair is back this Queen’s Birthday Weekend.

The fair, now an event over nine days with more than 12,000 visitors, has come a long way since the first book sale in 1988.

Donated books steadily stream in from the community year round, and a dedicated group of volunteers come in every week to sort and price items.

The book fair is a major fundraiser for Founders Heritage Park with all profits going towards developments at the park.

Council’s community services chair Gaile Noonan says the event wouldn’t be the success that it is without the community’s support and the generosity of volunteers putting in many hours work.

“The fair has been growing in popularity year on year and attracts people from all over the Top of the South and even further afield, which is great news for Nelson. I hear many locals and visitors return every year to find their gem amongst the preloved books.”

This year there are more children’s books than ever before, and new book categories have been introduced. These include popular authors, for example Enid Blyton, Dr Seuss and JK Rowling, and a vintage category for children.

“We’ve also made other changes to make it easier to browse and find what you’re looking for amongst the thousands of books,” Gaile says.

“We have a new room layout at the Energy Centre and a map will be available showing the range and location of book categories.”

This is also a bumper year for jigsaw puzzles with hundreds for sale in The Granary, this could be a perfect way to while away the hours during the colder, darker winter months.

Daily entry to the fair is $2 per adult or $5 for a nine-day pass. Children under 12 years are free. The Book Fair will open from 10am-4.30pm on Saturday 1 June and runs through to Sunday 9 June.

If you love books or someone else in the family does, note your calendar now and don’t forget to bring a bag to take away your new pre-loved books.

“I would always be at his swim competitions and I got bored so decided to join in.”

The Waimea College student has a hectic training schedule which sees her up at 5am and straight to the pool.

While she says her eleven training sessions per week can be tiring at times, it is winning that drives her.

“Sometimes I ask, ‘why am I doing this?’ But in the long run it all pays off.”

Bree credits her recent success to a new coach who worked a lot on her technique.

“Glen Findlay has done a lot for my stroke and helped change my mindset to a more positive one.”

Bree began swimming competitively six years ago following in the wake of her older brother.

A technology glitch meant Lilly was unaware she also became the fast 13-year-old in the country for 200m breaststroke.

“The touch pad and big screen was broken so I thought I was second, then when I got out of the pool they wanted to talk to me.”

Lily says it was an intense fight to the finish and an amazing feeling to get the gold.

“The girls swam really well, and we were all holding together. No one knew who was going to win.”

The Nelson College for Girls’ student also took home a brace of bronze medals for her efforts in the 50m and 100m breaststroke.

Lilly swam personal bests in every race as she eyes up nationals later in the year.

A gutsy Nelson College side survived a St Bede’s onslaught in the dying moments to hold on for a famous 20-18 win on Saturday.

A late Luca Inch try sealed the dramatic UC Championship victory as Nelson spent the final minutes camped on its own line in a tenacious display of defence.

Down by three points with less than five minutes to play, Nelson would need a special play and that’s exactly what it got through skipper Anton Segnar.

Anton had been having a reasonably quiet outing by the flanker’s high standards before breaking the St Bede’s line and finding his blindside Fergus Hughes.

In a moment of magical interplay, Fergus then found Luca Inch looming on the inside and the burly prop dove over for what proved the match winner.

Mike’s milestone in the middle Locally Owned and Operated

The respect rugby referee Mike Lash garners on the footy field was on full display during his 100th first class fixture on Saturday.

Following a Waimea try, Nelson star Willy Havili kicked the ball away in frustration.

Mike simply said: “Go get it, Willy.”

Then, without hesitation, the young first five ran 30 metres to retrieve the ball.

The 31-year-old whistleblower marked the significant milestone in his career at the weekend as Waimea and Nelson played out a thrilling draw.

“I’ve refereed these two teams a lot and they have had some tough battles, so it’s great to be involved in another one today,” Mike said after the game.

Refereeing 100 first class games is something Mike has grinded away at for a while to achieve.

“It’s been a long journey. I’ve been all around the world and country so to bring up this personal milestone is quite special.”

Mike says he still remembers his

first premier match 13 years ago like it was yesterday.

“Huia against Stoke in Motueka, they didn’t know it was my first till afterwards. I just kept it quiet and got a few accolades afterwards, which was nice.”

Injuries ruled Mike out of playing the game after suffering multiple concussions in college.

However, his desire to remain in the game he loved led him to picking up the whistle.

Having qualified as a pilot, he headed to Southland for work and quickly made the senior referee panel and eventually officiated 44 senior fixtures.

Mike was also selected to join the NZ Rugby referees’ panel and was given three junior international appointments, a Ranfurly Shield challenge and Mitre10 Cup games.

“NPC was always a goal of mine and an amazing experience.”

He says every game has its own special moments, but a Tasman Trophy final between Nelson and Waimea stands out.

“We went 100 minutes with extra time, so that really tested the legs, lungs and mind.”

“For a long time I tried to be like other referees, it took me a bit of time to realise that I just had to be me and bring me to the game, and when that fell into place I started reaping benefits from it.”

He says there are particular players that are harder to handle his younger brother James among the chief culprits.
