The cost of fixing Nelson’s historic Church Steps is still not clear after the heritage icon suffered extensive damage when a vehicle allegedly drove down them over the weekend. Nelson City Council has asked police to review CCTV footage of the area after the damage was discovered on Sunday. The trail of damage began near the top of the steps, with chunks of the granite stairs gouged out. Skid marks were then visible in front of the first column that was broken off its base, but not as severely damaged as the next column, which was knocked completely from its base and smashed on the ground. The area was cordoned off by Nelmac on Monday with repair work beginning immediately. Council’s chair of sport and recreation committee Tim Skinner says the column that was not as severely damaged had been cemented back into place. “Council will work with Heritage New Zealand to assess the most appropriate way to repair the other damage as the steps are a protected heritage item. Until we get information on this, the total cost of repairs won’t be known.” Sub Dean of Nelson’s Christ Church Cathedral Steve Jordan says the Cawthron Steps and the entire Cathedral area are an iconic landmark for Nelson. “It’s devastatingly sad if someone’s elected to cause criminal damage to such a treasured part of the city.” Father Steve will be leading the city’s Anzac Day ceremony at Piki Mai on April 25 and expressed

Most 12-year-olds will be taking a hard-earned break these school holidays - but not Lochlan Cockrell. He will be spending the next two weeks chopping fire wood. The Nelson College Preparatory School student has started his own business selling boxes of kindling from his Stoke home. He calls himself ‘The Kindling Kid.’ And since starting out two weeks ago, business is booming - with 50 boxes sold already, leaving him with $250 in his pocket. Lochlan says the idea came about last winter when he started helping his dad chop kindling for their own fireplace. “I was allowed to start using an axe when I was 11, and for the boxes I use a hand-axe that my grandfather helps me sharpen.

“I can do four boxes an hour if I’m really determined.” The kindling is a steal at $5 a box, but Lochlan says he’s surprised how fast it’s been selling. “My dad told me they would sell like hot cakes. One man wanted to order 20 boxes, but he didn’t want to put me under too much pressure, so he just ordered ten. “Now I’ve ran out of banana boxes.” The wood comes from broken untreated pallets which Lochlan gets for free from his dad’s work. “Otherwise they’d just go into the skip and then to the dump,” he says. And what will he be spending his hard-earned money on? “I’m saving up for my own phone and then any extra will go into the bank.” To order a box of kindling from Lochlan, you can call or text 0210694211.

However, Nelson City councillor Mel Courtney says council will ensure it is fixed before Anzac Day “even if we have to work through the night”. Mel was one of the first within council to become aware of the damage after images surfaced

online on Sunday. “They’re a wonderful feature and to have them damaged in that way is totally unacceptable but also what concerns me is that it’s a cost to the ratepayer.” A police spokesperson says they were first notified of the incident on Monday morning. The steps were first built in 1858, made simply from wood but they soon fell into disrepair and plans to replace them were finalised in 1911 thanks to Thomas Cawthron who offered to cover the costs.

Stoke retailers have hit back at the idea that the suburb is shutting up shop saying that they are open for business and offer one of the most unique shopping experiences in the region. Mary Jane Bailey runs Lemon Tree Lane which has been open for six years and she says each of the locally-owned and operated retailers offers something unique. “What we’ve got to offer is amazing community connection, I would know the names of 75 per cent of my customers and the names of their grandchildren probably. “Where else in town would you be able to go into a store and say ‘hey, next time you’re on a buying trip could you keep an eye out for one of these for me’? Well you can here, and we really try hard to stock what people want and need, and we can keep our prices low because the rents are a fraction of what they pay in Nelson.” She says although the fruit and veg store Benge and Co has closed, that only creates a unique opportunity for another retailer to nab a prime spot in the high-growth suburb. “The larger businesses leaving Stoke such as Kiwibank and Ministry of Social

Development; that’s a national problem, not a Stoke problem.” Last week, due to an editing error the Nelson Weekly reported that Kiwibank had closed, rather than it had announced its closure. The bank says it will stay in Stoke until NZPost can find a business partner. Mary Jane says that the retailers all work together to make sure they are each stocking different items. “So, while Stoke doesn’t have a lot of shops, we do have a lot of options within our stores.” Pat Ashton says for him and his wife Phillipa, Stoke was an easy choice to open their store ‘The Pantry Door’. “Yes, we’ve lost some [shops] but if you go in and actually study those, none of them warrant that negative feeling, they all have their own reasons why they have gone over the years.” Pat says Stoke is a very different place to what it was many

years ago and the supportive community has seen their business grow from strength to strength. “The perception is now that we have a growing community around us, and we have to grasp that as retailers. “We’ve been here two years now and our business is going up and up, as are many others, there’s definitely no regrets.” Lynley Gilchrist-Lunn has recently opened a new base for her cafe The Garden Window at the Greenmeadows Centre and says the new space is “beautiful”. “There’s a lot going on here in Stoke, there’s a really big initiative from council to try and regenerate Stoke. It’s no good saying ‘oh there’s nothing there, I’ll start going to Richmond’ if people want something, they need to come down here and tell someone. “If you want to live here you may as well make it the best place that you can.”

Nelson Bays Police are urging people to remain vigilant when driving on the region’s roads in a bid to reduce the carnage of the past week. It’s been a horror start to the year on New Zealand roads with more than 100 deaths and Nelson has not escaped unscathed. On April 5, cyclist Ann Rigg was struck by a car on SH6 at the intersection with Glen Rd in Wakapuaka. Another accident

occurred on March 31 which claimed the life of 64-year-old Douglas Charles Cater. Area Commander Inspector Paul Borrell says nationally the number of people killed on the roads in recent weeks has been a tragedy and a timely reminder to exercise vigilance, courtesy, patience and to avoid fatigue when using our roads. “This is even more of a concern as we head into the Easter school holidays and the winter months.” He says the police are committed to people getting through their journeys safely and makes no

Paul says current indications are that a significant number of serious injury and fatal crashes involve distraction, often the use of cell phones, therefore have causes that are entirely preventable. Forest fire concert a roaring success Matt McCrorie

The forest fire concert on Saturday was a fantastic success, organisers say. People from all over the region had the chance to come and say thanks to the first responders and volunteers who helped fight the Pigeon Valley fire in February. Nearly 3000 people turned up to the concert, held at the A&P showgrounds on lower Queen street on Saturday afternoon, and organiser Steve Page said that the event was “thoroughly successful, so many strangers came up to say thanks and the support as usual was amazing”. The concert was headlined by The Warratahs, supported by local bands including Nelson Jazz club big band, Bo Kay, Dust & Gold, and Nine95. Nearly $14,000 was raised all together, and the concert was free for first responders and those who volunteered during the fires. Steve says that people were particularly impressed with the firefighters from Appleby who turned up and embraced the afternoon. “Big ups to the Appleby fire brigade, it was great to see them turn up in the spirit that the concert was intended, it’s obvious that they have a great culture.” Steve wanted to thank the sponsors that made the concert possible, with the primary sponsors NBS and the local papers Waimea Weekly, Nelson Weekly, Marlborough Weekly, and the Motueka Guardian. “Also, a big thanks to community groups like Rotary and Richmond Unlimited, who helped out on the day.” Tasman Trailers donated a 7x4 caged trailer, Discover New Zealand provided a week’s campervan use and the Richmond Mall provided

The Waratahs stayed with Steve and his wife Jenny for the weekend, and Steve says they “thoroughly enjoyed” having them. “Barry [of The Warratahs] was just so taken with Wakefield and Pigeon Valley, he thought it was one of the most beautiful parts of the country. I almost think he might come back down here and live.” Steve says a highlight was the genuine input by a lot of the companies. “I loved seeing the folk up in front of the stage dancing and smiling. When I saw that I thought that my team and I had won. We achieved what we all set out to do.”

Why we need a new hospital Kate Russell Reporter

With a major redevelopment of Nelson Hospital on the cards, Kate Russell looks at exactly where the $120 million project is at and how the hospital is coping in the meantime. Why does our hospital need redeveloping? The two main buildings of Nelson Hospital are over 40-years-old and have been assessed as prone to earthquake impact. While the buildings will stay standing in the event of a major earthquake, their functionality would be greatly reduced. Nelsonâ€™s population is also aging and growing, bringing with it increasingly complex health issues which will raise the demand on an already stretched hospital system. Eric Sinclair, general manager finance performance and facilities, says changes in the way healthcare is delivered and advances in technology have evolved medical practices. These changes and the opportunities they present cannot be realised and accommodated within the hospitalâ€™s current configuration.

When would the redevelopment happen? There is currently no timing for when the development would happen, as the planning process will take some time. It will consist of several business cases - as required by central Government - to cover strategic, commercial and financial consideration. The DHB says the project will cost between $120$150 million. Eric says they are currently working through the indicative business case process to secure agreement with the Government that investment in the hospital is required. What would the redevelopment include? The physical form the redevelopment will take is still very unknown. The indicative business case update will set out a long list of development options, from which a short list will be chosen and then further analysed. This could include maximising the reuse of current building on the Nelson site, to, at the other end of the spectrum, a total greenfield redevelopment away from the current campus. How is the hospital coping in the meantime?

Lexie Oâ€™Shea, general manager clinical services says the number of beds available in Nelson Hospital fluctuates daily and they are sometimes required to enact capacity escalation plans. This means using the day-stay admission unit for overnight needs, using adult flexi-beds in the paediatric ward, transferring staff between Wairau and Nelson, calling in additional staff, using beds in other facilities and working with GPs, private

practitioners, home-based providers and hospices. Lexie says they are in the process of advertising for staff to permanently open a new unit called the Medical Admissions and Planning Unit. This will add a further 10 beds to the hospital and will open 1 July this year. When was the late time the hospital was upgraded? The last major work was completed in 2003 and included the new in-patient building

with a 14-bed maternity unit, 30-bed medical unit, 12-bed paediatrics in-patient unit, chapel and cafe, at a cost of $35.5 million. Will the hospital still be getting more public car parking soon? Last year, Nelson Weekly reported that there were plans to expand the public car park with the NMDHB confirming more parking was on the way. A communications spokesperson says there is no update on this yet.

It was over a decade ago that Mic Dover and Eelco Boswijk started talking about creating their own pub. Back then, New Zealand’s craft brewing industry was still in its infancy, but the pair knew that they could be onto something. They had been running popular “Beer Fetes” in Nelson, so knew there was a taste for it. “We were just lamenting the lack of good quality beer here,” says Eelco. “Then, there were very few places you could get a craft beer in Nelson.” Then an old church on Collingwood St came on the market. It seemed like a sign. So, in April 2009, The Free

House first opened. On Sunday that pub marked its 10th birthday with an open invite to the community to come and celebrate the history of what is now a beer institution. “We hoped it would be a tenyear project but at the start it was day to day,” says Eelco. “We didn’t know what was going to happen, but we had to try.” When it first started there were five partners, including Eelco and Mic. Then, slowly, Eelco and his wife Ali bought out the others before becoming the sole owners in 2016. When they opened The Free House there were only three outside tables with no signage for three years, relying on word of mouth to spread the buzz about a pub serving fantastic craft beers. Now, they have expanded into

a car yard next door, and built a beer garden and seating area. “We now have one of the very few greenspaces in the whole CBD,” Eelco says. The Free House even has a record store, after Eelco was approached by Grant Smithies to open one up in an old office. Eelco says they could not have been in existence if it wasn’t for the support of locals. “It’s just nice to be part of the community.” He says there are more plans to change the pub on the horizon. “You need to keep it relevant. Once you sit back and take it for granted, that’s when things start to dry up.” During all Sunday afternoon, people would come up to Eelco and say “happy birthday”. And that is something he and Ali can definitely toast to.

Students get Hike turns to horror in freak accident on the farm Nelson students got the chance to act out scenes from a renowned Kiwi author last week. Visiting author Jennifer Somervell brought her book series ‘Tales from The Farm’ to the region as part of a nationwide tour. A Nelson tramper hiked through the night to get help for his paralysed friend after a day’s walking turned into a dramatic rescue bid. Experienced trampers Anthony Oakly and brother-in-law Ian Hunt were in Marlborough’s rugged and remote back

country earlier this year when Ian fainted during the middle of the night at Severn Hut in the Molesworth. The impact when he fell damaged his spinal cord and resulted in Ian being temporarily paralysed from the neck down. But the Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) Anthony usually carried with him was at home with a dead battery. “There was no way I could move him myself, luckily I’d done some first aid courses which covered spinal injuries,” Anthony says. The pair knew their only hope was for Anthony to leave and find help. “It was a hell of a call to make, to leave my mate there like that, but the hut book showed hardly anyone visited, so there was no point sitting there waiting for someone to turn up,” he says. “I made him as comfortable as I could … and set off towards some farm sheds, where I hoped to find help.” Using a map by the light of the moon, Anthony says he had to cross five rapidly flowing rivers before he came across some farm sheds around four hours after setting off. But, he says, to his horror, they were empty.

Photo: Anthony Oakly. “That’s when it really hit me, I had no idea whether Ian was alive or dead at that stage, I had to keep going.” About 5kms later Anthony made it to the Molesworth Station Road, empty and stretching out for miles in either direction. As he was trying to decide which way to turn, he saw a cloud of dust kicked up by an approaching 4WD. “It was a bit of a miracle, no one is usually on the road at that time. I flagged him down and convinced him to drive me to the closest Department of

Conservation hut.” The ranger at the hut contacted Molesworth Station, who called the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter. At 11am that morning in January, Anthony heard his mate was being choppered to Christchurch Hospital. “I was so relieved, because I knew then that he’d be ok,” Anthony says. “Then I threw up. It was awesome to see them.” Ian spent time in Christchurch Hospital then Burwood Spinal Unit. He hopes to be back tramping again soon. “I can’t wait to go tramping, it’s been a big part of my life for the last few years, I’ve still got to have it,” he says.

Stoke’s leaky library is likely to close next month for further scoping and repairs. Nelson City Council’s community services committee received an update on the remediation of moisture damage at the 26-year-old library at a meeting last Thursday. Decay, rot and toxigenic mould were discovered in the roof beams and cavity of the building during maintenance repairs last year, but further investigations are required to repair the building. Due to the risk of the project, no tenders have been received from contractors to undertake the work - which involves the removal of wall and ceiling linings to assess potential moisture-related damage. Instead, council are proposing to close the library for four weeks to scope what needs to be done and fix the internal work under their maintenance contract. The date of the temporary closure is yet to be confirmed but it is likely to be around early May. Once the

extent of the damage is known, a decision on a long-term solution can be made. Acting library manager Mark Preston-Thomas hopes they can provide library services to Stoke residents during the closure, and they are currently exploring alternatives. This could include escorting users to other city libraries via a shuttle, finding a temporary home for the library or setting up a pop-up library. Gaile Noonan, community services committee chair, says they are aware of the importance of the library for the Stoke community. “We will make sure the work is undertaken within the shortest possible timeframe so that the community is not without their much-loved space any longer than need be.” The library is currently safe and does not pose any structural danger to staff or the public. The Elma Turner Library in Nelson and the Nellie Nightingale Library at Tahunanui remain open for service, and online services also remain available.

Gangs unite with haka against hate Jonty Dine The country’s most bitter gang rivals came together on Saturday to help bring an end to racial hatred. Members from a number of gangs, including Black Power and the Mongrel Mob, shed their colours for a “Man Up” patch in a show of unity in the wake of the Christchurch terror attacks. The Man Up (Tu Tangata) movement is centred around breaking the cycle

of violence. After riding through town in a motorcycle convoy, the men stood on Church Steps and performed Tika Tonu before they were joined by the public for a rendition of God Defend New Zealand. Ride organiser Martin Daly says the ride was about uniting against hate. “As a nation we have to confront and get rid of our racism, we can all love one another, if the gangs can do it, we all can.”

Stoke shops closing: Must admit that I didn't use it very often but was shocked to see yet another business close in Stoke [Benge and Co]. People want the friendliness of chatting to staff, knowing that the product is fresher than in supermarket, and Stoke is the main retirement area. Now those with no transport to have buy at either a supermarket, or bus to Richmond trying to carry heavy loads. In 2014, a survey was done in the Stoke area, the results showed that people wanted/needed easy access for shopping etc, yet so many things have closed. Letters show that the Tahunanui community wants a supermarket, the people have spoken, but will that make a difference?? The people spoke in Stoke, and yet again have been "slapped in the face." Nelson Matters Euthanasia is a difficult subject that Nelsonians have strong opposing views on. I have been grappling with the issue over the last year as one of eight parliamentarians on the Justice Select Committee considering ACT MP David Seymour’s Bill. We reported last week to Parliament on the exhaustive hearing of 39,159 submissions, 92% opposed, from all over New Zealand including 440 from Nelson and Tasman. Euthanasia sounds like an attractive proposition. Advocates argue it is no different to what we do for pets to avoid suffering and that it is an individual’s choice to end their life by assist-

ed suicide if they so wish. I have become increasingly sceptical of these arguments as I have delved into the detail. Doctors made compelling submissions opposing this law change. They have no difficulty in patients making an informed decision to refuse treatment or using medication for pain relief that may bring forward the time of death. Their concern is about drugs administered with the deliberate purpose of killing a patient. They also expressed deep concern about the reliability of determining how long a person has to live and whether someone making a decision to end their life is free of depression or un-

due influence from others. It is inevitable that mistakes will be made. I was unnerved by the international evidence. The most common reason cited by patient’s requesting euthanasia in countries where it is allowed is concern about being a burden on family and society. We must be cautious of creating an environment where people feel guilty for living. I was also shocked by examples overseas where a young person suffering from mental illness was lawfully granted euthanasia and where an older woman was forcefully injected against her will after having changed her mind.

Disability advocates were very opposed to the Bill. They have worked tirelessly for decades to get society to value people with disabilities. The Bill applies to people with grievous and irremediable conditions as well as the terminally ill. It effectively states that assisted suicide is okay for these people as their lives are of less value. I also worry about the mixed signals this bill sends on suicide with over 600 New Zealanders taking their own life each year. Stoke Kindergarten gifted korowai Jonty Dine Making the transition from kindergarten to school is a special moment for children and the celebration is set to take on even more significance in Stoke. Children at Stoke Kindergarten will now be draped in a korowai upon graduation as they prepare to start the next chapter of their lives. The korowai was gifted to the school following a blessing in a special ceremony today. Portrayed through the korowai’s feathers are atua Maori Papatuanuku (earth mother), Tangaroa (god of the sea) and Ranginui (the sky father). The garment depicts the story of Ngawhatu, in which a Maori warrior named Kupe fought the giant octopus known as Te Wheke. Parents Abby Willmott and Rachel Friesen were tasked with the creation of the korowai. “We met with local iwi members about the process and protocols and went from there.” The women say between research, collecting materials and the weaving work, they would be at a loss to guess how many hours they put in. Though the final product makes their countless hours of work worthwhile. “It will be a special moment to see my daughter wear it when she graduates,” says Abby. Every few weeks the Nelson Weekly sits down to have lunch at Burger Culture with someone interesting doing something interesting. This week we catch up with Chia Sisters CEO Florence (Flossie) Van Dyke who was recently named on the annual Forbes 30 Under 30 list. Tell me about your background before the Chia Sisters? I used to be a corporate lawyer up in Auckland, but I was working really long hours and started realising I wanted to be doing something that I believed in and have a lifestyle which is a bit more on my own terms. My sister Chloe had created the Chia drink and was selling it locally when she invited me to join the team. What inspired the career change? It was a really hard decision, especially because I had studied to be a lawyer for five years, I had been working as one for three, so it was a real shift but I was feeling really worn out and demoralised by the state of corporate law, it didn’t seem very inspiring to me. Initially I just thought I’d do a year (at Chia Sisters) but after that year, we were distributing to all the Foodstuffs and Progressive supermarkets and exporting to Australia and Singapore so that was a good bit of fire to keep me busy here. What do you attribute Chia Sisters’ success to? I think we take a lot of risks, one of our philosophies to fail often and fail quickly, we like to try things and if it doesn’t work, we will stop and try again. Community groups move into Greenmeadows: Community groups in Stoke can now call Greenmeadows their home following the issue of its Certificate of Public Use on 28 March. All tenants are now in situ, except Stoke Seniors, who have delayed their occupation due to key members being on leave. The doors to their new space open to members from 13 May. Council’s management contractor CLM will start taking bookings from the public from 1 May and a community open day is being planned.

Tees for Nelson’s trees: Moved by the recent forest fires near Nelson, the Marlborough region’s Paper Rain Project has launched a not-for-profit t-shirt in support of native tree plantings. Trainee Department of Conservation rangers will oversee the restoration, with all profits from the sale of the project t-shirts will go towards pre-purchasing native seedlings at an eco-sourced tree nursery for re-planting in Eve’s Valley. The world’s largest silent disco came to town on Saturday as dozens got their groove on through the streets of Nelson. World Dance Day took place in over 40 countries and 96 cities around the world in a celebration to unite humanity. A talented troupe of Nayland College students is bringing a classic to the Theatre Royal stage early next month. Oliver! is being performed during the first week of term two, from 1 - 4 May. Based on Charles Dickens’ ever-popular novel Oliver Twist, the Lionel Bart adaption brings to life the book’s timeless characters with its important social themes. The story follows young, orphaned Oliver Twist as he navigates London’s underworld of theft and violence, searching for a home, a family, and love. This is the second time the college has staged the production - the last time being in 1990. It’s also the first show for new head of drama, and director, Verity Davidson. The cast of 43 features three of Nayland’s student leaders in key roles - Jo Melesia, Ben Dowdle and Mia Faulkner.

The Wallace Art Awards are now displayed in the Suter Gallery – the first time the prestigious competition has been shown outside the North Island. The awards, founded by philanthropist James Wallace, aims to assist emerging artists by both patronage and promotion through exhibitions. The awards are worth a combined $275,000 and often give artists a launchpad for their careers.

“They have really been a platform for so many people to rise in the public eye,” says Annie Pokel, who led the project to bring the awards to the South Island. “James wants this art to be seen. Many private collectors will buy art, but no one gets to see them. “His dream is to take it to as many places as possible.” Suter director Julie Catchpole says the awards offer a “snapshot” of what is going on in New Zealand art at the moment and hopes the dozens of works will inspire artists and the public alike. “This is a window of what happening broadly in contemporary New Zealand art.” “The entries range from painting sculpture and mixed

media to multimedia works.” Suter curator Sarah McClintock says the awards can help inform local creators to see how their work fits in to the large New Zealand scene and also give them the push to enter the awards themselves. Many artists may also not have seen the final exhibition, even if they have entered

them in the past. “This is a way to show them what is happening in New Zealand right now. “There will definitely be work that you like and probably things you don’t like too.” The exhibition is on at the Suter Gallery until June 9 before heading to Christchurch.

Marist and Waimea remain the early frontrunners in the E’stel Tasman Trophy while the defending champion continues its resurgence after a stuttering season start, with a 53-28 win over Central. A breath-taking hat-trick to lock Conor Rhind ensures Nelson keep themselves in touch with the unbeaten Waimea Old Boys and Marist at the top of the table. Nelson chanced its arm from the kick-off reception, trying to run the ball out from its own 22 only to concede possession to the dangerous Timoci Tavatavanawai, who scored

with less than a minute gone. The hosts struck back after a succession of penalties against Renwick with skipper Chris Kerslake crashing over the chalk from close range. Conor then made a scintillating break from the base before stepping fullback Mitchell Smith and showing enough speed to get to the line for the first of his trio. Rhind’s second was the nail in Central’s coffin as Nelson looked to put an exclamation mark on its dominant performance. The young lock was over again moments later, the beneficiary of a superb run and offload from Blackadder. The hat-trick hero says he is loving his first year out of

college with the Nelson side. Rebecca’s downhill career on the up Jonty Dine Reporter

Not long after learning to walk Rebecca Hufflett was flying down mountains on her bike. Her passion for riding did not wane over the next 12 years, and now the 14-year-old holds a slew of national and international titles. Rebecca recently raced in the South Island Secondary Schools in Methven and absolutely destroyed the competition, winning gold in all three events, the enduro, downhill and crosscountry. Her dominance can be attributed to years of graft on the unforgiving Nelson trails. She says cyclists are bred tough in the region thanks to its rugged terrain and steep hills. “Nelson can be straight up and straight down, so you have to stay

on your toes. The rule of thumb is that Nelson is two grades harder than anywhere else, so it prepares you well for other trails”. Also, with no gondolas or shuttles, riders are forced to walk or ride their bikes to the top of trails adding an extra element of fitness to her training. “There are a good variety of rough, natural trails that aren’t too manicured with lots of rocks, roots and other challenges in there.” Rebecca wasn’t content with just beating the girls in Methven, she also kept a close eye on results in the highly competitive boy’s division. “I was about top ten, so I was pretty happy with that, I made a few mistakes but had clean rides with no crashes.” Her wins are made more impressive by the fact her preparations for the event were hampered by the effects of the Tasman fire.

The Nelson Mountain Bike Club member says riding Nelson trails can take a toll on the body. She says some of the climbs can be “nasty” and a deterrent for young mountain bikers.

“It can be really hard getting motivated to get to the top, especially in the heat but I try to take a friend with me, chat away and just ignore the pain.” Her passion and persistence paid off and she currently holds national titles in U15 women’s downhill and cross country.

She is also the U15 Oceania cross country champion. The Nelson College for Girls student is training five times a week as she prepares to defend her national secondary schools title in Dunedin later this year. However, she says it is never a chore. “You get such a rush going downhill it just makes you happy, I ride for the descends because they are always worth it.” Though yet to take a particularly brutal tumble, Rebecca remains weary of the risk. “Fear is always in the picture, there will always be a trail that could get the better of you so managing the mental side is also really important.” She says mountain biking has been part of her life for as long as she can remember, and it will continue to be. “I never regret going for a ride, it just fixes whatever I am feeling.”
