Cries of foul over ‘poll’ Andrew Board Editor

The race to be Nelson’s member of parliament has turned nasty with a scrap between the region’s front runners over a “push poll” released by the Green Party. On Monday morning, Green Party candidate Matt Lawrey re-
leased an internal telephone poll that he said showed a close race between National’s Nick Smith, Labour’s Rachel Boyack and himself. But it then emerged that the poll was a “push poll” or done by an automated voice. The method is unscientific and can’t tell who has answered the phone. Political commentator Patrick

Gower called the poll “fake news” and Smith and Boyack teamed up to condemn it. Boyack was the first to react taking to Twitter saying that many Labour party members in Nelson simply hung up when contacted by the automated voice. Smith then sent his own press release saying the poll was an attempt to “manipulate Saturday’s
result with alternative facts”. “This sort of polling is banned in some countries and it reflects poorly on the Greens that they have resorted to this tactic to try and save themselves.” The poll showed that Smith gained 29 per cent of the vote, with Boyack in second at 25 per cent and Lawrey on 23 per cent. But Lawrey says the poll showed
that there is a desire for change in Nelson and he believes he is the best person to bring it. “I’m not going to say it’s as scientific as a Colmar Burton poll, but it does show a trend. We’re convinced that as we head into the last days of the campaign, the momentum is with us,” he says.

Whether the poll is accurate or not, it shows that Nelson is a prized seat for any of the parties. Last month Nelson has had visits from National leader Bill English and New Zealand First leader Winston Peters, while Labour’s Jacinda Ardern was in town last week and Greens leader James Shaw was in Nelson yesterday. With the Greens polling slightly above the 5 per cent threshold needed to return to parliament, a win in Nelson would secure its place in the Beehive. For Labour it would be seen as a huge coup to regain the party vote in Nelson, which it last held in 2005. To win the seat would be cause for huge

Known as Pat, has been the Chief Executive of Kāpiti Coast District Council for the past nine years. But prior to this, he was Deputy Chief Executive at Nelson City Council, and says he is eager to return. Mayor Rachel Reese says Pat was a “standout candidate” bringing a wealth of knowledge gained in leadership in local government.

Cawthron receives $20M for research: The Cawthron Institute has received more than $20 million to fund two research programmes. The funding, which is part of the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) 2017 Endeavour Round, will be given to Cawthron over five years to research the risk emerging organic contaminants pose on our aquatic ecosystem and new methods to diagnosis, predict and manage aquatic diseases.

Tyre slashers target Nelson Locally Owned and Operated
Brittany Spencer A number of residents woke up and jumped into their cars only to find their tyres had been slashed over the weekend. Senior Sergeant John Price says police have had multiple tyre slashings reported in the Nayland area and Nelson’s U-Save Tyres manager John McNaught says they’ve been inundated with calls and customers today. “We’ve had half a dozen calls minimum, we’ve had five people come in and have their tyres replaced, and a tyre shop in Richmond has had at least four as well, so there were a lot of tyres slashed.”
John says they’ve also had to go to several call-outs. “They’ve been mainly cutting the two tyres on the left side, so drivers are getting their spare on but they still can’t move the car because both tyres are stuffed. “We’ve had to put vehicles on axle stands in the driveway, take the tyres away, fix them and take them back, so the numpty that’s doing it is really making it hard for people, slashing not one tyre but two.” John says that whoever has been doing it, has been really making a meal of it. “We had a four-wheel drive come in with two left hand

side tyres slashed. One of the wheels had a 30cm gash, so whatever they’re using is a very sharp knife because they’re cutting the tyres like butter.” While he’s always happy to see customers, John says he’s really not happy to see people’s tyres getting slashed. “We love helping the public out by selling them tyres and making sure they’re safe, but I don’t enjoy having to do this for people, some muppet is costing people a lot of money.” Police are investigating the slashings and Senior Sergeant John Price says anyone who sees suspicious activity should call police on 546 3840.

The Nelson Tasman Hospice are edging closer towards their new $11 million facility after receiving the deposit for the hospice’s current building. The Manuka Street Hospital are buying the building to allow room for their own expansion and when presented with the $80,000 cheque on Friday, Nelson Tasman Hospice chairman John Peters said it was a milestone for both healthcare providers. “We’ve known for sometime that this wasn’t going to be our forever home,” says John. “We’ve been putting money aside but we don’t have enough yet, so contributions like this are very significant and we intend to acknowledge the donation within the building, there will always be a part of Manuka Street in the hospice.” The money will go straight into building the new $11.5 million
facility on Suffolk Rd in Stoke, which will include 10-bed units, consulting rooms, outdoor areas, and space for families to meet and spend time together. The hospital will give the remainder of the $800,000 for the building to the hospice when they move out of the building in 2019. Nelson Tasman Hospice CEO Frans Dellebeke says the move is timely given the increasingly expanding hospice services. “At any given point we have 10 people in the hospice and are looking after around 140 families in the Nelson Tasman area.” Manuka Street Hospital chairman Graeme Skeggs says it’s good to get to this point. “We’re both expanding organisations and were put in a position where there was simply not enough room for both of us to grow.” The hospital are currently completing the first stage of their $25 million extension which will see the addition of 22 private rooms and an extra theatre.

Soft plastic recycling comes to Nelson Kate Russell Plastic shopping bags, bread bags and food wrap can now be recycled in Nelson. New World, Pak’nSave and Countdown supermarkets have introduced soft plastic recycling bins as part of the Love NZ soft plastic recycling programme that was rolled out in the region on Friday. The items – which have traditionally been sent to the landfill – will be bundled up and taken to Melbourne to be turned into outdoor furniture. Project manager, Lyn Mayes of The Packaging Forum, says they are “delighted” to launch the programme in Nelson. She says the programme recently received a $700,000 grant from the Government’s Waste Minimisation Fund and now reaches 70 per cent of Kiwis, with around eight tonnes of packaging collected every week across the country. The most popular branded packaging that has been collected through the scheme so far is bread bags (21 per cent), paper goods packaging (18 per cent) and frozen food bags (14 per cent). 55 per cent of bags that were collected were unbranded, including single use carrier bags, fresh produce and bakery bags, and newspaper and magazine

We will provide first home buyers with affordable residential sections under long term, low interest sale and purchase agreements up to 25 years. Purchasers would build their own homes using normal bank financing with title to the section transferred to them, and the amount owing for the section, secured by a second ranking statutory land charge.
“I really am so happy here.” When Bev found out she was able to bring her mini schnauzer Molly to her Summerset retirement village, she was thrilled. “Molly is very important to me, I wouldn’t have wanted to make the move without her.” After being at Summerset for only a few months, Bev was surprised at how quickly she settled into village life. She really likes the feeling that she’s secure and that help is always at hand should she need it. She says that living at Summerset has given her a great sense of relief, “Now I can relax.”
Over the last six weeks Nelson Weekly has shone a spotlight on the region's housing issues. We spoke with a young mother who couldn't find a rental home. We spoke with an elderly woman who lived in a very damp and cold council house. We gathered statistics and information that showed that the region's rental and property market has become very competitive, leaving some without a place to call home. And we spoke with doctors who said a cold home is making our children sick. The reason we undertook this series was to highlight these issues. Our stories have prompted hundreds of comments and seen people reach out to contact us about their story -- not all made it to print but we hope that this series helped bring to light some of the issues facing those in our community. It's not all doom and gloom though, in our region we have several agencies and groups working hard to improve the state of our houses. We've already spoken with the Salvation Army and today we asked the Warmer Healthier Homes scheme and Nelson Tasman Housing Trust to tell us what they're doing to help. We also reached out to the politicians asking for your vote this Saturday asking what they have done, or what they will do to help the situation. We hope you enjoyed the series, after all it only seems fair that we each have a place to feel Safe and Sound.

In some particularly vulnerable situations it may be free. To be eligible, homeowners or tenants must have a community services card, with referrals prioritised for people and families with chronic health conditions or households with children less than five years old or people over 65 years. Over the last three years the WHH NTM group has retrofitted installation into over 700 homes, with this year’s target being over 400 homes and

Speaking success for Nelson student Kate Russell Reporter

Public speaking might make some run a mile, but Nelson teen Abel Johnston can't get enough of it. So it’s no surprise that the Nelson College year 13 student has talked his way to the finals of the Ngā Manu Kōrero national secondary school speech competition, which is being held this week in New Plymouth. The competition has been running for over 50 years and is intended to encourage the development of skills and confidence of students in spoken English and Maori. The Nelson College head boy will be taking part in the Senior English category, which requires both an impromptu and prepared speech, with his prepared topic being ‘why Maori performing arts should be University Entrance approved’. Abel’s rise to the national competition comes after success at the regionals back in May, where he placed first in senior impromptu and prepared, and overall English. His first taste of the competition was back in 2014 as a year 10 stu-
dent, where he spoke in the junior Maori section. “I had one day to prepare for that one,” he laughs. But Abel says he hasn’t always loved public speaking. “I used to be really quiet actually, my parents hated public speaking when they were young - they don’t know where I get it from. But since that first Manu Kōrero I did, I haven’t had stage fright in anything I do. “I just like the stage space now when people talk about that fear
of looking at the audience, I don’t really see it as much anymore.” Abel says that he won’t be fazed this week when he is given five minutes to prepare for his impromptu speech. “They take your phones off you so you can’t do any research and then one by one they’ll pull you from the room, and say ‘here are three topics to choose from, you get five minutes’ and then when that’s up, you’re up on the stage. “There’s some tricks you can use, like remembering common say-
ings and knowing a bit about what’s going on in the world right now and usually you’ll be sweet, but sometimes you have to figure out ‘okay, well, that’s what I know, how do I work that into a speech on this’.” The Wellington-born student is of Ngāti Porou decent, and reckons he’ll be standing against some of his cousins who he’s never met. “I guarantee that when I’ll get there, there will be at least two or three Ngāti Porou speakers. It will be interest-

ing to make that connection with them and see what they bring to the table.” And is he nervous? “Nah, I can’t wait. I think it’s going to be really fun. I can’t wait to see the other speakers,” he says. “I’ve really wanted to go to nationals and now that I’ve made it, it’d be nice to place, but I really don’t care if I do. I’m just happy to be going, and glad to represent, and when I get there I’ll just do the best I can.”

Revamped Nelson science fair to inspire Kate Russell Reporter

A “new look” science and technology fair is coming to the Trafalgar Centre next week. The three-day Cawthron SciTech Expo kicks off next Tuesday and is an annual celebration of science in Nelson. Over 350 entries will be on display from primary and secondary schools, as well as early childhood centres throughout the region. SciTech committee member Dr Bruce Rudge says the old format of the science fair was “too narrow” and has now expanded to include ‘Art in Science’ and ‘Research’ sections, as well as a science communicators award. It also now welcomes entries in Te Reo Maori. “The new format is much broader, and we’ve changed it to make it more contemporary. It was a bit old and rusty,” says Bruce. Twelve-year- old St Joseph's School student Luke Heaphy will be among the entries making the most of the new sections, after co-winning the school’s own science fair. He’ll be showcasing his enquiry board and electric motorcross bike, which he says has the potential to enhance performance and save the planet – both at the same time.
Luke says it was his passion for motorcross that started the process, and he came up with his own enquiry which inspired the project: Could he make an electric motor that competes with his 85cc two stroke racing bike? And by using an electric starter motor from a Toyota Corolla, a dirt bike frame and two powerful jump start batteries, he was pleasantly surprised at the results. “It took two days to build. It looked different, but it was much lighter,” he says. Cawthron Foundation secretary Elizabeth Bean says the expo is a “fantastic community event, bringing together scientists, students, teachers, local and national businesses, all working together to support our regions young enquiring minds.” There are over 80 prizes to be won, worth a total of $8000, and Elizabeth adds that they’re hoping the move from Founders Heritage Park to the Trafalgar Centre will make it more accessible for people wanting to come and have a look at the entries. The Cawthron SciTech expo runs from Tuesday 26 September (9am – 6pm), Wednesday 27 September (3pm – 6pm) and Thursday 28 September (3pm – 6pm). Entry is free.

Every three weeks Nelson Weekly editor Andrew Board sits down with someone interesting for a chat over a pint [or two] of delicious beer at either the Vic Brew Bar or Burger Culture. We call it "Beers, Burgers & Banter" and this week he interviews former Black Cap, current Black Cap selector and new Nelsonian Gavin Larsen at the Vic Brew Bar on Trafalgar St. You had a ten year, 121 ODI and 8 test match career. What was the highlight of it for you? I get asked that a lot and it sounds cliché but it’s almost every time you pull the shirt on you pinch yourself and say ‘you’re representing your country, this is pretty cool’. Tongue in cheek, I would have like to have played a few more tests and I think I got shafted by the selectors, so it’s a twist of irony that I’m now a selector. Specific highlights, the ’92 World Cup, the run that we had, the infamous semi final. We would have won that world cup if we won that game – I’m convinced of that. Now that you are a Black Cap selector do you think there are a few players who think you’ve shafted them? I’m sure my face is already on a

We were looking for a bit of a lifestyle change and the Black Caps selector role allows me to not be based in any one location and it’s not a 12 month full-time role, so it gave us a bit of flexibility about where we could live.

The competitiveness of the players was the same but apart from that it was almost polar opposites in the way the tournament was set up, planned, structured, delivered. It was like apples and oranges. It was the best two years of my life from a career point of view, it was an amazing experience. Nelson played a role in that world
cup, hosting three games. What were your thoughts on how the city hosted the cup? I would have to say that I was absolutely thrilled that Nelson was on the radar because I’d been down here, I’d seen Saxton and I could see the potential. I think I understood the vibe of city and how it was getting behind the world cup. We were doing a ground-zero build so I spent a lot of time down here in Nelson. Did that time here during the world cup influence your decision to move here? Yeah, it was massive – massive.
Are you here for the long haul? I hope so, I hope we’re here forever. We’ve settled in really well, we’ve met the neighbours and Mapua is a really neat little community. What can you do enhance cricket in Nelson? David [Leonard, Nelson Cricket CEO] runs a really good show and clearly has a strong board behind him. The thing that smacks me between the eyes is that you have a really good boutique cricket ground, really good training facilities and brand-new indoor training centre, you’ve got other potential in terms of grounds around the region and you have the sunshine. All that, to me, equals destination of choice and it equals cricket development in my mind, so I think there are some special opportunities down here.

Young professionals prep for popular ball Brittany Spencer The Nelson Young Professionals are buzzing, preparing for their ever-popular annual ball, to be held on the waterfront next month. Nelson’s inaugural sausage festival, Tuesday, August 29: The organisers of Nelson’s inaugural sausage festival, Matias Cacciavillani of Viva La Vaca and the team at Craft Beer Depot, were thrilled with the public support they received. The festival was created to find Nelson’s favourite sausage flavour, and after almost 700 sausages were cooked and devoured on Father’s Day, it was decided that the win-
ning combination was pork, duck, orange and thyme. With a successful event done and dusted, Matias says they are looking forward to holding another festival in the future. Count those Kereru- ! The Great Kereru- Count, which runs from 22 September to 1 October, is NZ’s biggest citizen science project. It was set up to give us a better understanding of the New Zealand pigeon — also known as kereru-, ku-ku- or kukupa. You can be part of this national initiative to gather information on the abundance and distribution of these beautiful birds.

Get ride ready for summer
The more people who participate in the Great KereruCount, the better understanding we will have about how kereru- are doing across the country. To count kereru-, go for a walk with a note book and listen and watch for the gardeners of the skies. Record your sightings – where, when and how many birds – then report back at greatkererucount.nz. Scientists from Victoria University and Lincoln University will use the annual data from the Great Kereru- Count to build a more accurate picture of kererunumbers, distribution and key kereru- behaviours. This will help us understand how best to protect kereru-.

Making Nelson an even better place
Can you help create beautiful baskets? Would you like to be one of the team of volunteers helping us create a beautiful new bunch of hanging baskets for the summer? Around 600 baskets need planting, ready to go up around the city in late November/early December. The planting will be done at the NELMAC Nursery on Atawhai Drive. The session times available are as follows: • Monday 9 October 10.30am – 12pm and 1.30 – 3pm • Tuesday 10 October 10.30am – 12pm and 1.30 – 3pm • Wednesday 11 October 8.30 – 10am and 1.30 – 3pm Fifteen volunteers per session are needed. All you need to bring is your own gardening gloves and a good dose of enthusiasm. The 90 minute sessions will see you planting petunias, impatiens and geraniums, with nursery staff on hand to help and advise if needed. In the past people have really enjoyed the planting process, and it’s a good skill to learn, as you can then go home and create your own hanging baskets. The baskets really bring the city to life over the summer months and are enjoyed by locals and visitors alike. We’d really love your help to get them up and running again this year. If you would like to volunteer as a hanging basket planter, call Council Customer Services on 03 546 0200 to register.

Neale Park pump station upgrade
Water meter readings start soon
The construction tender has been awarded to Downer NZ Ltd and they are establishing on site (at the Guppy Park end of Neale Park) this week. This is a major upgrade project, with the target for completion being the end of November 2018.
The residential water meter reading round is due to start on 1 October, and will continue for about two months.
Due to the tight working space available in the area, there will be some access and parking restrictions near the pump station site. For more details, see the site map on our website, nelson.govt.nz (search = Neale Park pump station). The work site will be fenced off, so please take note of any
signage in place as construction progresses. This upgrade has been planned for some time. It will have significant benefits including increased pumping capacity for future growth, treatment of odour, and resilience to potential wastewater overflows.

The meter readers will be active from 7am – 6pm, seven days a week, including public holidays. They will be identifiable by their hi-visibility vests which say ‘Water Meter Reader’ and ‘Hirestage’. If you don’t think meter

readers will be able to access your meter, please call 021 026 66708 so that we can make alternative arrangements. All water used through the meter is charged at $1.964 per cubic metre, GST inclusive, down from $2.0360 per cubic metre charged in the last financial year. The invoice/statements are posted out usually within two weeks of the meter being read. They will be due for payment on 20 December 2017.

Road closure for York Stream Stormwater upgrade Work is progressing well on this important stormwater upgrade. A full road closure is now in place on a short section of Kawai Street and Boundary Road. The road closure started this week and is planned to last for six weeks. The closure is required to allow the contractor to safely lay the new 1800mm diameter stormwater pipe under the existing high voltage power cables and the many other services that run through that section of road.

Following the recent installation of the traffic calming measures on Brook Street, Council completed a review into their safety and effectiveness. As a result of this, and bearing in mind the feedback from road users, some alterations will be made. Over the next few weeks, contractors will be onsite to replace the right hand side concrete islands at three of the four locations with a white painted island, which is able to be driven over. Our investigations have shown that the narrowings have not altered vehicles' speeds as desired, and as such an undesirable difference in speed between cyclists and vehicles has resulted. The alterations will provide an escape route when vehicles and cyclists meet at the island locations, while still providing a visual narrowing with the aim of making road users more aware of each other. Sharrow markings will be removed and these will no longer be used on Brook Street or Westbrook Terrace. These changes have been discussed with local cycling advocates, who have previously shared their feedback with Council on the issue. Council trialled this approach in an attempt to lower speeds and make the environment safer for the high volume of cyclists using the Brook Valley. What we have learned from this trial will be used to better define traffic solutions for other parts of Council’s road network in the future. The message is still clear – everyone needs to share with care so please be aware of those around you on the road, be patient, be careful and let’s all get home safely.

Freedom Camping Bylaw in place for summer Council has made some changes to the draft Nelson City Freedom Camping Bylaw before adopting it. It will come into effect from 1 December 2017, in time for the peak summer season.
However, we do ask that everyone respects our city. This bylaw provides the tools we need to manage the summer influx of freedom campers and the effect they can have on our environment, other visitors and on those living and working here.”
The changes made were as a result of the 226 submissions, (including two petitions), Council received on the draft bylaw. They include:
The Nelson City Freedom Camping Bylaw prohibits camping in non-self-contained vehicles anywhere within the city, apart from in official campgrounds or at other private accommodation providers. This style of camping has been the greatest source of complaints and concerns in previous summers.
• Freedom camping will now be prohibited at Centennial Park and Paddy’s Knob (previously included as restricted camping areas).
For self-contained vehicles, restrictions have been imposed on the numbers of vehicles and the areas where they can park.
• The number of certified self-contained (CSC) vehicles in Buxton Carpark has increased by three (to 23) and in Montgomery Carpark by five (to 25) to make up for the loss of places at Paddy’s Knob and Centennial Park.
Council had already included $100,000 in this year’s budget to be used for enforcing the Nelson City Freedom Camping Bylaw, which will now be available as it has been adopted.

Free open day to help community Locally Owned and Operated
Te Korowai Trust and Nelson Bays Police are presenting an open day, showcasing just about everything to do with road safety, health, social and employment services in Nelson and Tasman. Te Korowai already runs a driver safety programme aimed at helping young parents get their full driver’s licence so they can legally transport children in their car. The programme has been so successful that it decided to team-up with police to highlight a wider range of road safety services in the Code 2 Road and Beyond Community Information Day at Annesbrook Church Hall. However, Te Korowai’s Betty Soane says the programme for the open day soon “morphed” into something bigger and ended up including health, employment and social services as well. Betty says the free open day is aimed at people of all ages and will feature experts from an intriguing range of services. “Not everyone knows where to go for help, so we hope this is a stepping stone for them to seek support,” she says. The road safety services will be presented by police, Ride to Live and ACC Ride Forever programme presenters. Driving
instructor Kevin Bannan will explain where to go for driver and rider training and how the graduated licence system works, including how to avoid getting fines, demerit points and what to do to get your licence back. Age Concern will be conducting checks for the elderly to ensure their vehicles are set up safely while Plunket will demonstrate a driveway safety kit designed to prevent children being injured by reversing vehicles. Te Korowai staff will outline their car seat for hire scheme
and explain the importance of budgeting for things like vehicle registration, warrant of fitness, running costs and insurance. Nelson Technical Institute staff will explain the employment opportunities arising from someone obtaining, for example, their HT licences and the courses available to do the training. There will be a heavy truck present, to demonstrate what is required, on the day. Workstar staff will be present, offering employment support services for people with barriers

Police would like to hear from families affected by the vandalism of about 70 grave sites in the Richmond Cemetery earlier this month. The families will be invited to attend a Youth Aid family group conference with the two youths who allegedly damaged the graves, to decide on appropriate punishment for the senseless attacks. However, Nelson Bays Youth Aid Sergeant Charlie Parfitt says they are “having trouble” contacting the next of kin with only around 1015 families coming forward by the end of last week. “We want to hold a Family Group conference in three to five weeks so we’d like these families to contact us so we can invite them to come,” Charlie says. “The conference will decide where we go from here and determine how these youths are held accountable, so it’s really important.” Charlie says the families can contact Donna Smith at Nelson Victim Support by phoning 03 5463847 or emailing donna.smith@victimsupport.org.nz

The Nelson Motorcycle Club is aiming to rev up its junior charity motocross after the inaugural event raised $5500 for some of Nelson’s favourite charities. The club’s mini and junior motocross was held at MotoXpark in Eighty-eight Valley last month with teams of riders racing for a designated charity. One of the organisers, Delwyn Leitch, says the event was so well supported by the business community and riders that it raised $5500 for seven charities with the top three team’s charities getting the biggest donations. The teams handed over their donations last Thursday with two members of the winning team, Seb Wardle and Harry Gardner, giving the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter a cheque for $3125. Seb, who finished second in the
125-200cc class, says it was a great event and “good to be able to race for charity as well as your team”. Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter Trust general manager Paula Muddle was delighted with the donation, saying “we always need more money to keep our helicopter flying.” “It’s wonderful for people to arrange some sponsorship and all we have to do is come along and collect a cheque – they did a fantastic job,” Paula says. The Angels Trio received $1100 and Nelson Regional Breast and Gynaecological Cancer Trust $825. The SPCA, Nelson Tasman Hospice, Waimea College Special Education Department and Fifeshire Foundation each received $137. “We are hoping that this event will grow in size and popularity in the future,” Delwyn says. “We had such good support from all the businesses we’d like it to become a permanent fixture on the Nelson Motorcycle Club event calendar.”

Knight Riders win club basketball comp Andrew Board
The Waimea Knight Riders have run away with the Nelson Basketball Association men's A grade competition, thrashing the Stoke Bears last week. The Knight Riders, featuring basketball legend Phill Jones and Mike Pero Nelson Giant Ali Granger, lined up against the Stoke Bears which featured current Giants captain Sam Dempster. Sam says this year's competition
has been the best in a few years. "It's been really competitive. A couple of the college teams were really good, one beat us during the season and Waimea College almost beat the Knight Riders in last week's semi-final." The final was a one-sided affair though, with the Knight Riders showing too much energy for the Bears. "They played really well," says Sam. "We lacked energy and passion, it was pretty sad to see a final
go down like that. We've played those guys in finals for the past five years and it's always a really close game, so it's a shame this one wasn't." In the B grade, the Richmond Renegades beat Rhythm and Brown to win the title. Sam says there is a social basketball league held over the summer and the region's top players will start to train together. "The off season is far too long. But we try to keep ourselves fit and sharp."

SWIMMING: The Blue September sea swim is being held in Port Nelson this Sunday with all proceeds going to the Prostate Cancer Foundation. Swimmers to register for the 600m ice-breaker at the Nelson Yacht Club from 8.45am for a 10am start. Entry is $10. TRIATHLON: The Nelson Triathlon and Multisport Club will be hosting the national secondary school’s championships at Rabbit Island on March 19 and 20. The event will feature an individual triathlon and aquathon and team relay triathlon. The club plans to stage the annual Andrew Jones Memorial triathlon for regional secondary schools as a warm-up for the national event. SPORT AWARDS: Nominations are now open for this year’s Nelson Sports Awards to be held at the Rutherford Hotel on November 25. The awards are open to Nelson sports people and teams who have performed with distinction from October 11 last year to October 11 this year.

The region's top young footballing talent has been selected for this summer's ISPS Handa National Youth League. LVL Nelson Pine Tasman United announced the squad today which features plenty of faces familiar to local football followers, including a bulk from Richmond Athletic and the Nelson College 1st XI that finished third at this month's national tournament. Head coach Rob Anderson and assistant coach Gary Calderbank say they're excited about the players they've recruited. “We are really excited by the 2017 squad that has come together this season," says Rob. "This is a great opportunity to give these players top level training and game experience over the coming three months, and to introduce them to the Tasman United football philosophy." Tasman United is preparing for its second season at senior level of the national league, but the region's youth team, formally called the Falcons, has had previous success,
winning the competition in 2014. Rob says it's the goal of the coaching staff to develop more local players who will go on to make the senior team. "This is a primary directive we have been given from Nelson Bays Football and something we are fully supportive of.” Training commences this coming Tuesday at Neale Park. This year is the Nelson Dawnbreakers Fishing Clubs 15th Anniversary and we are getting ready for another action packed season. The clubs 2017/18 season will start on the 1st October. The start of the new season is the perfect time for new members to join. We will hold a Club Open Day on Sunday 24th September 2017 at the Nelson City Club from 3-5pm. Come along, bring a friend and meet other members to see what the club is about. During the year there are numerous club events suitable for a range of members from really young to really not so young. Once a month there is a Club Social Day where you can get the latest fishing news and tips and catch up with other Club members. This year we will also extend the dive section for the clubs growing number of free and scuba divers. The club holds an annual fishing competition that ends with the big End of Year prize giving in July.
