The game capped off a memorable week for the city with 21,404 fans packing into Trafalgar Park, most of those in their seats more
than half an hour before kick off. Earlier in the day, Trafalgar St was blocked off to traffic and filled with people eating, drink-
ing and soaking up the entertainment. The day was a stunning success for organisers and will have the drums beating for

city living and what this could mean for Nelson. For Mani and Sonia Rai it means convenience. They own perhaps the only apartment in Nelson with a trampoline on its balcony. The couple own Little India on Hardy St and have lived atop the restaurant for about 15 years. “It’s so easy we hardly use our car,” Sonia says. “The kids are

close to school and everything is so handy.” Another central city resident decided a different angle and bought a commercial building on the city fringe and repurposed it. He is not totally sure about the legality of it but says council needs to be more creative with how it applies the rules. The building is still pretty rough with no insulation and a corrugated iron roof. He hopes his experience might one day help the council figure out how to help creative locals reinvigorate the city. “I think it’s essential if we get people living in the city the council now need precedents and examples of how you can apply the rules in creative ways ... It’s very hard for someone at council to draft legislation when starting at plans and living in suburbia.”

Facebook crime in Nelson is on the rise with more people being scammed from the social media network as it morphs into a trading platform. Admin for a local buy and sell Facebook page, Rachel Ratcliffe, says that it gives more freedom to commit offences than any other site. “In comparison to TradeMe, where you need to give personal information to set up an account and there are set repercussions for a bad trade, on Facebook it’s not hard to set up a false account, steal another’s identity, block people and effectively disappear.” Lachlan Banks was recently scammed out of $750 when he attempted to purchase a piece of machinery from a man who claimed to be in Collingwood. Lachlan says, after negotiating on price and freight he was happy to proceed with the sale. “I deposited the money in July and the thing never turned up. He told me his son took it to Hamilton and dropped it at the courier and he doesn’t know what happened to it. “I said surely they must have

New Zealand Police supervisor of cybercrime investigations, Detective Sergeant Damian Rapira-Davies, says that the variables with a platform like Facebook are not well documented so it’s hard to progress
a case. “Often people think it’s as simple as reporting it to the police and they get their money back, but it’s what we can prove, not what we know.” He says that, naturally, with the rise of social media users the risks also increase and warns that if something looks to good too be true it usually is. “A platform like Facebook has anonymity and a number of traders are drawn because they need that anonymity, they don’t want to be tracked back.” He says a lot of these types of crimes can be prevented. “Look closely at the profile, are there things about it that don’t make sense? When was it set up? Is someone selling an iPhone 10 for $400 and is that an indication you should perhaps stay clear of it?”

GOT SOME E-WASTE? WE’VE GOT A SUBSIDY FOR THAT! E-waste is pretty much anything that has a plug or a battery, and it’s the fastest growing type of waste in the world, with around 80,000 tonnes generated in New Zealand each year.

It’s pretty important to try and keep this out of landfill as often these items contain harmful materials, which is why Nelson City Council provides a $20 subsidy (one per household or business per year) for you to dispose of your e-waste responsibly. Currently Nelson Environment Centre offers a full e-waste recycling service, with 4,010kgs of e-waste sent for processing at the facility in Amberley in the last two months alone (and that doesn’t include the weight of the metal in each item, which goes to metal recyclers here in Nelson). Since the subsidy was introduced there’s been a big increase in the volumes coming in to be recycled, so keep up the good work Nelson! Subsidy coupons are available at Nelson Environment Centre (they can only be redeemed when you bring in items for recycling) – check out their website for more information on the e-waste recycling service. Farmers Market returns to CBD Jonty Dine
The Nelson Farmers Market is returning to the heart of the city. After a year at the Maitai River Boulevard, the weekly market will once again run in the CBD. It will pop up in Kirby Lane, off Bridge St, from tomorrow. Nelson Farmers Market manager Miriam Clark says while the spot at Maitai Boulevard was a beautiful, picturesque setting, it provided a number of challenges. “It was incredibly exposed to the elements, we have broken
several gazebos with strong gusts of wind.” She says the second challenge was the lack of foot traffic. “Because we are a midweek market, we need to be set up close to where people will be having their lunch breaks, it was really important for us to be closer to the worker.” When it became public knowledge that the market was looking to move back into the CBD, Miriam was approached by the Bridge Street Collective to run the market from its site at 111 Bridge St. Miriam says it was natural
pairing as the market fits right into the collective’s vision of a community hub. “This is a fantastic site, it ticks all of our boxes.” While slightly smaller than the previous location, she says they are looking to bring all 30 stalls across from the Maitai site. “We are having to be creative with our set up but at the moment everyone that wants to come across, can. “I hope the people that haven’t been able to come in the past year will come and enjoy their weekly market experience,” Miriam says.

NEWS Waimea Dam back on table: The Waimea Community Dam, which was recently voted down by the Tasman District Council, has got a new lease on life, after its costings were revised. Last month councillors rejected a plan for the project as it had been estimated to cost $102.2 million, an increase of $26.3 million. However, last week, the council announced a revised funding proposal for Waimea Community Dam that it says will reduce the cost, and risk, to ratepayers. Mayor Richard Kempthorne says the joint venture partner Waimea Irrigators, working with investors and the government, had proposed a revised funding model. Richard says it meant irrigators would cover the bulk of the recently-announced price increase. Maori language week: As part of Maori language week, the Nelson Weekly is embracing te reo this week by changing the masthead of the newspaper to Whakatu Weekly. It represents the Maori name for our region and we think it’s important to embrace the recent surge in reviving the language. There are events planned across the city for the week so get out and learn to korero. Gang arrests: An internal gang fight has lead to the arrest of three men linked to the Mongrel Mob. The men were arrested last week after police executed several search warrants in relation to an altercation. The men have been charged jointly for assault with intent to injure. “Police have and will continue to take a firm line on gang violence and intimidation within the community,” says Detective Sergeant Lex Bruning. He wants to reassure members of the public that any behaviour which adversely impacts on the community will be actively policed. The three offenders will appear at Nelson District Court on Tuesday, September 18.

Trafalgar Park concert a sell-out Kate Russell You’d be dreaming if you were still hoping to get a ticket to the inaugural Bay Dreams Nelson. The all-day music festival sold out in less than two months, after first being announced back in May. Tickets went on sale at the end of July and sold out last week.
Promoters say that over half the entire capacity pre-registered for tickets, and on the day early-bird tickets went on sale they were “flying out the door” with the ticketing site “struggling to keep up with demand.” To be held at Trafalgar Park on Friday, January 4 from 11am – 11:30pm, Bay Dreams Nelson is the sister festival to the Mt Maunganui
event, which has established itself as one of New Zealand’s most popular summer music outings. The R18 event features a lineup of both international and kiwi artists, including CardiB, Shapeshifter, Tash Sultana, Sticky Fingers, Peking Duk, Katachafire and more. Nelson mayor Rachel Reese says having a major music festival event at Trafalgar
Park, with local and international artists, will add to Nelson’s already “blossoming” suite of summer events. “The All Blacks test showed how Nelsonians can really get in behind these events, and the city as a whole can really put on a show. We look forward to working with the organisers to make sure Bay Dreams is another successful event for Nelson.”

Amid the All Black atmosphere Charles Anderson There was something special sitting amid the thousands of others who headed to Trafalgar Park on Saturday night. There was a bond that brought people together from across the region. It was a chance to relish in a first – the first time that the team had come to Nelson. It was the first time that such an occasion warranted a full-on street party. For me personally, it was also the first time my stepson had ever seen the team live. And what a great occasion to do it in – when Nelson was at its best. Seeing people stream down Trafalgar St before and after the game gave the city an exciting sense of community that is not often matched. There are several people that need to take a big bow, not least of whom Tasman Rugby CEO Tony Lewis and businessman Shane Drummond. But add to the list the rest of the Tasman Rugby team, the Nelson Regional Development Agency, Nelson City Council, local business owners and those of us who turned up to events throughout the week, enjoyed the atmosphere of the day or who were sitting in the stands on the night. Well done to you all. It was a great occasion, but the challenge now is to capitalise on that to make sure that we can recreate that feeling more often – both with and without the All Blacks.

The first-ever All Blacks test in Nelson turned the city alight, with punters, publicans and politicians all singing the event’s praises. And they say it proves that we can put on even more big events like it. “The big question should now be … what next?” said Tasman Rugby chief executive Tony Lewis. Thousands of people gathered in the city centre on Saturday as live music filled the streets and food stalls and bars kept the fans well fed and watered. It was a great opening act to the main event –21,404 selling out Trafalgar Park. And the players came to the party too - bringing home a 46-24 win against Argentina. Tony Lewis said it was like having a dream come to life. “But having [that dream] better than you could expect.” He said it was magnificent to see the whole city embracing the idea. “What it has shown is that if
you put on the right event the people in Nelson will come to it and flock to it in their tens of thousands – the key is what the right event is.” He said the city had established a valuable blue print for putting on big events in the city. “It’s now working out how we can best position ourselves for the next one to benefit the city.” Part of that was ensuring that Trafalgar Park was revamped to ensure that Nelson could host them. “Right now the stands are being pulled down. "If we are going to have these events we need to build something so we can aggressively chase them.” Above all, Tony said Saturday’s match was a celebration. And the publicans were celebrating, too. Owner of the Cod & Lobster, Nick Widley, said the event was “brilliant” and it was even more busy than they expected. “I reckon, the way it went, I
see no reason why we can’t have more games like this. I think we proved ourselves as a town. “Bring it on.”

told a press conference. “The community has been fantastic, everywhere we've gone we've been well received. "New Zealand is one of the few
places that takes their national team around the country, and it's just a great reminder the All Blacks are the people's team and we enjoy coming to places like this." Mayor Rachel Reese said she was immensely proud of how Nelson came together to put on this memorable event. “This match was an amazing spectacle, excitement in Nelson had been growing all week as visitors poured into the city, and by game night the atmosphere at the ground was electric.” She said Nelson showed once again that it can host these large international events, especially when all the community gets involved. “Securing and delivering an All Blacks’ test match was the result of hard work and dedication from so many Nelsonians, and without this combined effort the match wouldn’t have been the success it was.” That thanks also extended all the way to the supporters who flooded into the city.
Argentinians Pablo Daverio and Facundo Stella made the trip north from Timaru and Twizel respectively for the historic test. "We heard of the game and made the seven-hour drive and here we are,” Pablo said. "It is our first time in Nelson, we are really enjoying it.” But there were plenty of All Black fans, too. Local boy Cooper Batten said before the match that he had been looking forward to his first test match "for ages.” The nine-year-old says he is a huge All Blacks fan who had his hopes met when his favourite player Kieran Read scored a try in the team’s win. Injured All Black Sonny Bill Williams said that the team relished the time spent in Nelson. "It's beautiful down here, I've been lucky enough to spend a bit of time here with the Crusaders, it's a beautiful spot in New Zealand and the boys are really enjoying it." So, as mayor Reese said: “They are welcome back anytime.”
ALL BLACK SPIRIT: William Qin, owner of the Q Variety Store, gave out free New Zealand flags for locals to show their love for the All Blacks. “I knew about the All Blacks in China and when I heard about the game, I wanted to support the community.” William distributed more than 7000 flags over the week, all free of charge. Despite losing a little under $7000, William says he is in a blessed position and wanted to thank Nelson for everything it has done for him. “It was worth it to see their faces.”

Terry Brunell doesn’t remember the day he lost his sense of smell. One minute he was bombing down the Nelson Hospital carpark, the next it was three days later and Terry was in a hospital bed. He couldn’t smell anything. “People told me I just fell off.” It wasn’t the first time that had happened. Terry was part of a vanguard of local Nelson skateboarders who took to the sport in the late 1970s. A photo of Terry taken by his mate Robert Edmondson recently sparked Terry’s memory about the time in his life where he was a local skating hero. “This day and age they can do things where they stay on,” Terry says. “I wasn’t quite at that stage.” But he was. He and another skater won the Nelson championships in the late 70s and went up to Auckland to compete at the nationals. The location was the newly-built “Skatopia”, which featured the best skatepark in the country. But it was demolished and built over by theme park Rainbow’s End.

He represented Nelson in softball and played national league soccer for a decade. “I was never a good swimmer though, so I never got into surfing. Skateboarding seemed like the next best thing.” Terry and his mates on Thompson Terrace in Toi Toi would build ramps up there and one time rolled it down the street towards Buxton Carpark.

“We were worried it would get away from us.” They braced it against the toilet block and went about challenging each other to see who could do the most impressive trick. He also used to bomb down some of Nelson’s notorious hills – the hospital carpark being one of them. Another time he was heading down Tresillian Ave in Atawhai. “It was a hot day so I took my shirt off but I started getting some speed wobbles.” Terry thought he could run off the board but he was travelling too fast. “I did a somersault and ended up sliding the rest of the way down on my back. There were 12-inch gashes across his skin. He didn’t tell his mum but the blood stains on his sheets the next morning gave it away. Then the 1980s came along and the sport fell out of favour. Terry still has his board but these days he uses it to move around furniture rather than launch off homemade ramps. “But I keep it around, you never know, the grandkids might even get into skateboarding at some stage.”

Can-do attitude for food drive Over 1500 items of much-needed food are ready to go to St Vincent de Paul, thanks to a student-led food drive at Garin College. It’s taken just three weeks for the school to accumulate tins of baked beans, spaghetti, creamed rice, fruit, tomatoes and soup for their annual food drive. Cereal, pasta, rice, noodles, muesli bars, tea and other non-perishable items are also included. Every student has been encouraged to bring in as many items as possible, and they’ve had a mufti day,
a jelly bean guessing competition and a movie night as incentives. Student John Paul Schryvers says they are looking forward to loading the food into the school van and dropping it off at St Vincent de Paul in the next few weeks. “We can’t wait. The fact that it’s going to our community is cool,” he says. On top of that, students have also managed to raise another $1000 through bake sales and sausage sizzles. Half will go to St Vincent de Paul and the other half to the Cancer Society.

wharves of william akersten William Akersten played a major role in the creation of Port Nelson. He arrived from Melbourne in 1855 and leased the small Customhouse wharf, building a larger wharf two years later.

Trafalgar Centre usage comes under fire Kate Russell Nelson City Council say they are looking at ways to reduce costs for hirers of the Trafalgar Centre after its low occupancy rates were revealed last week. Figures revealed by councillor Mel Courtney have shown that in the 480 days from 8 April 2017 until 31 July 2018, the main arena was used 8.65 days, the northern extension was used 41.50 days and the full venue was used 73.50 days The venue fully re-opened to hirers in April 2017 after an extensive $16.6 million redevelopment. It was closed in 2013 due to earthquake risk. Since it reopened there have been 75 individual bookings and 49,056 people attending them. Roger Ball, council’s group manager community services, is defending the figures, saying they are still in the “rebuilding phase”. “We are constantly looking at ways to reduce the cost to the hirer.” He also says the figures are not a true reflection on its usage, as they don’t include set-up and pack-down days. “A one-day event using the main arena will have the event organiser using the venue for at least three days, and sometimes up to a week, depending on what is involved. Just because the venue isn’t open to the public, doesn’t mean it’s not being used in preparation for an event.” He expects numbers to increase over the next few years as they develop the marketing of the venue. “The priority for marketing the Trafalgar Centre since its reopening has been to develop the quality of the customer service onsite and improve the professional infrastructure inside the facility to match the industry standards across New Zealand. “Priority has also been given to marketing nationally to conference organisers who need to plan up to three years in advance when choosing a venue.”

Your Voice All Blacks in Nelson: A big thank you and congratulations for an outstanding event are due for all those involved in the success of this historic sports occasion. This includes not only the local rugby union, Nelson City Council and those business men who had the courage to underwrite the test match but also must include the many volunteers who looked after that massive number of rugby fans attending on the night. All the retailers in Nelson who supported the match and helped turn Trafalgar Street into a South American styled fiesta party prior to the match also deserve a big pat on the back. This turned out to be an event where Nelsonians from all walks came to the party,
worked together and got the job done. The great pity was that the game was played on a very cold night and many fans were unprepared for the freezing cold temperature. Imagine if it had been played during the afternoon when Nelson turned on one of its magic spring days. Question now is will we get another test match in Nelson? How about we start by getting the Crusaders to re-appear here after an 8 year absence. Nelson rugby fans at least deserve that! Yours faithfully Neville Male

Nelson Matters Nelson was as much the winner as our celebrated All Blacks when they beat Los Pumas 4624 last Saturday night at Trafalgar Park. We proved as a community that we are capable of hosting New Zealand’s national sport at the international level. The event was inspiring for Nelson rugby, fun for families and good for business. We projected Nelson onto the national and international stage with class and we boosted our pride and confidence in ourselves. The seeds of the success date back many years. We were bold
in putting our hand up to host games in Rugby World Cup 2011 and proved our capability. Our rugby credentials have grown with the remarkable rise of our Tasman Mako. We are indebted to the visionaries from Tasman Rugby, Nelson City Council and our Nelson Regional Development Agency who, in February last year, backed by commercial sponsors, put the bid in to host this Argentina/All Blacks game. A vision can go awfully wrong without successful execution. Those responsible for preparing the grounds and stands should take a bow. The pre-game in-
volvement of the All Blacks in the community was inspirational. The fan trail embraced by so many businesses created a city-wide festive spirit. A big thanks to the retailers for their shop displays, the 22,404 who dug deep and bought tickets and the 200 volunteer ushers who helped make it all happen. I enjoyed the game from the southern stand with my son and, like so many families, loved the atmosphere. My favourite moment on field was when Mako Shannon Frizell scored, but the best overall was when Sky commentator Tony Johnson said it

was the best hosted All Black game since 2011. Go Nelson! I congratulate the NZ Rugby Union for giving us this opportunity. To keep the All Blacks strong, the union must continue to nurture rugby in the regions. This event proved the worth of Trafalgar Park. We are so fortunate to have this large capacity sports facility right in the heart of our city. I remember the groans when we spent $8m of ratepayers and taxpayer funds to upgrade it for the Rugby World Cup with the west stand, new gates and toilet facilities. We need to finish the job and re-
place the tired and outdated east stand. We also need to further capitalise on our unique heritage as the birthplace of the New Zealand rugby. We need to be preparing now for the 150th celebration in 2020 of that momentous game first played between Nelson College and Nelson Club at the Botanics on 14 May 1870. Rugby is on a roll in Nelson. Damin touches NEWS down after surgery Locally Owned and Operated
Kate Russell It took nine months of fundraising and a trip across the world - but seven-yearold Damin Ching finally has both feet back on Nelson ground after his lifechanging surgery. The Nayland Primary student is back at school and running properly for the first time in his life. Damin and his family returned from the five-week trip to the United States last month, where he had a rare operation called selective dorsal rhizotomy at the St Louis Children’s Hospital in Missouri. He was born with right side hemiplegia, a type of cerebral palsy which causes high muscle tone and lack of control in one side of the body. Running, swimming and even walking can be challenging. The five-hour operation involved cutting the nerve fibres in the spine that the brain uses to stiffen the limbs. It’s not funded in New Zealand, so Damin’s family

had to raise the full $120,000 to get him the surgery. According to Damin’s mum, Mikayla McDonald, it has been worth every penny. “He’s now walking with both heels touching the ground, which he hasn’t been able to do most of his life. He just ran properly for the first time and has a lot more range of movement now,” she says. “We have been waiting years and working hard to get to this moment.” And with his continued
physio sessions, which Damin must attend five days a week, things will only get better. Damin’s surgery went “all to plan”, according to Mikayla - although the trip wasn’t without its tough moments. “After the surgery, he had three days of lying flat on his back, so he got very bored. Retailers get behind All Black visit Retailers joined in the festivities of the All Blacks first test match in Nelson by decorating their windows black and white. Julie Forbes and Anne Remington of Little Boutique on Bridge St came away with the win, beating out dozens of other retailers in a competition to have the best All Blacks-themed window display. “We are a lingerie shop so we were just being true to ourselves,” says Anne. “It was a great event so it was fun to get behind the game.” The pair won a double pass to the game from Uniquely Nelson for their success. Anne says it was fantastic to see the city get into the spirit of the game and they were just doing their part.

INSPIRE FESTIVAL: Local students, from left, Maddie Cornelisen (13), Lucy Schaffer (11) and Owen Suter (12) took their Harry Potter knowledge to a whole new level at the seventh Inspire Festival last week. Around 650 students from 45 different schools around the Top of the South packed Nayland College last Thursday and Friday for the annual science-driven event. Run by the Ministry of Inspiration, the festival offered students from years five to ten an array of fun and challenging workshops, including surgery insight, behind the scenes engineering at Air NZ, electric buggy building and kitchen science. Workshop leaders from different universities, Nelson Hospital, SchoolGen, Plant and Food Research as well as local teachers all shared their expert knowledge. A Nelson harness race is at the centre of fixing allegations. A police inquiry into the alleged fixing found at least one of the drivers manipulated the result of a race at Nelson on June 8. Police can now confirm seven people have been charged in relation to Operation Inca, an investigation into alleged race-fixing in the harness racing industry. A 26-year-old man appeared in Christchurch District Court last week on charges of deception by match-fixing, possessing Class B drugs for supply and supplying Class B drugs. Four men aged 34, 40, 41 and 44, are due to appear in Christchurch District Court on Tuesday September 12 on match-fixing charges. A 41-year-old woman is due to appear the same day on two counts of supplying Class B drugs and a 47-year-old man has been charged with deception by match-fixing and is due to appear in Palmerston North District Court, also on Tuesday September 12. Police last week conducted nine search warrants in Christchurch, one in Invercargill and another in Manawatu.

‘21st century Pinocchio’ comes to Arts Fest Nelson Arts Festival is strong on family friendly shows this year, and one of the favourites is bound to be Ann-Droid The Wonderful Adventures of a Robot Girl. This 21st century Pinocchiothemed story about a robot girl who wants to be human is on at the Theatre Royal for two shows and suitable for ages four and up. The show’s creators, BANDART Productions, is a collaboration of two Hungarian artists, Katalin Lengyel and Szabolcs TóthZs. Their shows combine theatre with the latest interactive technologies to create visually
stunning performances. Nelson Arts Festival director, Charlie Unwin, says it’s a family show not to be missed. “This company has taken simple storytelling to the next level, using technology and innovation to enthral and enchant audiences all around the world,” he says. “I can’t wait for Nelson to experience them.” The unique show combines theatre with the newest digital technologies: projection, a smart LED costume, a robot ball and a drone. It tells the story of Ann, the robot girl, who dreams of becom-

Shannon Frizell's home-coming couldn't have been scripted any better. Playing on the home pitch of his club side Marist and his provincial union Tasman, the All Black blindside flanker put in a man-of-thematch performance in the 46-24 All Blacks win. In front of 21,040 fans, Frizell had a storming first forty minutes, making several strong carries, his second surging break setting the hosts up for their first try through Nehe Milner-Skudder. The flanker was immense, carrying the ball 16 times as the All Blacks top metre-eater. All Blacks coach Steve Hansen says Frizell was superb in just his second test start. "We lost a lot of players early, so we couldn't be anything but extremely happy with him." He says they did not plan to give the 108kg Frizell the full 80 minutes.
"At one point I didn't think he would get there but he found another wind, I think he can be pretty satisfied, he has got a big future." While Shannon shone, it was hardly a perfect performance from the men in black. Steve says the All Blacks' week in Nelson was been an incredibly enjoyable one. "It's been great, the weather is tremendous and the park is fantastic." Tournament week for college teams Jonty Dine Last week saw the best college sides in the country battle it out for national glory in a range of tournaments across New Zealand. Results from some of the teams that went away to tournament weeks, from weightlifting to netball and hockey to golf croquet, follow. Nelson College for Girls: Nelson College for Girls enjoyed some of its best winter tournament results in recent memory, says the school. Grace Cumming won the NZSS u53kg weightlifting title, recording personal bests in all of her lifts. The junior underwater hockey team won a silver medal at the New Zealand champs in Rotorua, with the senior A team placing 6th in the senior competition. The 1st XI football team placed 24th at The NZSS premier tournament in Taupo. The Senior A basketball team travelled for the Southern Cup

in Ashburton and placed 6th, a great result for a team that hadn't travelled away in a few years. The 1st XI hockey team placed 11th at the Chica Gilmore cup in Pukekohe, with three wins and three close losses. The golf croquet pairing of Ellie Ross and Vienna van Heeswyck narrowly lost their semi final at the NZSS champs in Wellington, but it was still an outstanding effort for two young athletes. The girls had a tight win to open its account, edging hosts Otago Girls High School 38-35 before dispatching Mt Aspiring 51-25. Day two saw the side start comfortably with a 41-28 win over Ashburton before defeating 2017 champions St Hilda’s 36-34. Nelson took on Waitaki Girls High first up on day three, winning 42-41. They then met St Margaret’s for a semi-final spot and pipped them 36-33 to book its berth for the first time since 1997. College’s dream run ended their however, beaten in the semi-final by Southland Girls in a thriller, 29-28. The side now prepare for nationals. Nelson College: The Nelson College basketball side missed the cut for nationals, going down in their South island qualifying tournament after losing three of their eight games. College ended up 10th in the tournament with only the top six progressing to nationals.

The junior boy’s basketball side finished second in their tournament. “Finishing second, means next year, they will go into the top competition.” “We had six teams travel to tournaments over the week including, for the first time in eight years, a boy’s hockey team.” The hockey side finished their tournament sixth which Dayna says was a fantastic result considering they went in as one of the bottom teams. “It’s a really young team so hopefully next year they will be able to move up a tier.” Another success story is the senior girl’s netball team, who made it to the finals of the South Island B grade. “They lost the final by seven goals but were still in the game with five minutes to go.” Maddie Marshall and Darlene Ragiuia were two of 12 players named in the tournament team and the team will also move into A grade next year “We will get to compete with the best of the best, it’s showing how Nayland sport is rebuilding and we are on the right track.”

Mako look to bounce back against Taranaki Locally Owned and Operated

Tasman will be looking to bounce back from its first defeat of 2018 when it hosts Taranaki in Nelson this Friday night. The Tasman Mako's unbeaten Mitre10 Cup run came to an emphatic end at Eden Park last Friday night as Auckland gave last year's finalists a reality check with a dominant 3610 victory. After three wins to start their 2018 campaign, the Mako were thoroughly outplayed by an Auckland side starring returning All Black Patrick Tuipulotu. The Mako looked good early on as Finlay Christie set up Ethan Blackadder after a blistering break from the base. However, the first forty was the Tuipulotu show, the 16-test All Black bagging three tries, his second a stunner as the towering lock showed a clean set of heels to out-sprint the covering Mako defence. A Mitch Hunt error handed Auckland a third before
Tuipulotu crashed over for a first half hat-trick right before the break to give the hosts a commanding 19-point lead. The action wavered in the second as neither team could add to its half-time score until the 76th minute when Akira Ioane powered over off the back of another Mako error. The loss sees Tasman fall to third on the premiership table with Auckland leap-frogging them into second. Losing skipper David Havili says the "classy" Auckland team dominated the Mako at the breakdown and piled on the defensive pressure. "We just lost our shape, we will take learnings from this game and turn up again next week." The Mako return home for their first appearance at Trafalgar Park when they meet Taranaki, fresh off losing the Ranfurly Shield on Friday night. "We are looking forward to the challenge of it," Havili says. Kick off is at 7.45pm.

Show jumping grand prix coming to town Jonty Dine A week after Nelson hosted its first All Blacks test, the city is set for its inaugural show jumping grand prix this weekend. The PGG Wrightson Nelson Bays Spring Show Jumping Festival will take place at the Richmond Race Course this Saturday and Sunday from 8.30 am with the All Things Equestrian 1.10m Pony Championship. The weekend will culminate with the class 37 Pony 1m competition on Sunday. Organiser Tessa Silcock says the first-ever Nelson show jumping grand prix will be a fantastic day out for horse lovers and casual observers alike. “I want to showcase what show jumping is really like to the public and also to local competitors who have not competed outside Nelson.”

SporTS BASKETBALL: The Tall Blacks got their first workout ahead of the upcoming FIBA World Cup Qualifiers in Beirut with a 92-58 win over Qatar on Saturday. Nelson Giant Finn Delany led the team on offence on a steamy Doha evening. Delany led all scorers with 23 points and five rebounds. The side will next meet Syria on Thursday in Beirut, tip off 5pm local time. VOLLEYBALL: Thanks to a collaborative local effort, there are now five all-year beach volleyball courts and a newly landscaped spectator area at Tahunanui. The Pines Volleyball Club will be promoting this new area, to bring big beach volleyball tournaments back to Nelson. With the new courts positioned right next to a cafe, playground, and toilet and shower facilities, it's the ideal spot for beach volleyball tournaments.

stay up then it goes down to time.” The Grand Prix class is set at a height of 1.40 - 1.45m. Tessa says there will be riders from across the South Island
at the inaugural event. The Nelson Bays Spring Show Jumping Festival will be held on Saturday and Sunday, September 15 and 16, at Richmond Park. Free entry.
TENNIS: Nelson Bays Tennis will host a ‘have a go’ day this weekend. All schools from Tapawera to Golden Bay are invited to take part in a free hour of fun on court with their local tennis coach on Saturday at clubs across the region. The “Have a Go Day” enable students to try out tennis with their school mates before committing to the sport.

Silcock sisters loving life as Mako Jonty Dine
The All Blacks may have the Barrett brothers, but the Tasman Mako women's rugby side has the Silcock sisters. And all three have very different skills. Tessa is the speedster, Katie the powerhouse and Tamara the workhorse. But all three have been selected in the Mako for their first season of provincial footy together. Tessa, 25, plays wing or fullback while the more physically imposing pair of Tamara 22, and Katie 23, play in the pack. The women say they complement each other’s games perfectly with pace, strength and endurance their individual attributes. Since leaving Motueka High School, the girls’ playing careers took a backseat as Katie started a family and Tessa went to Victoria University. With Katie taking 2017 off to have her third child while Tessa was focussed on her business, 2018 will be the sisters' first season in Mako together. The sister’s selection is the culmination of years of blood and sweat. While Tessa says she never needed much encouragement to

Photo: Jonty Dine. pick up the oval ball, her playing days got off to a comical start. “I began playing when I was four and I quit when I was five because I scored a try at the wrong end.” Katie’s career began when she was eight and “smashed the boys” right from the start. “I loved it, I just wanted to hurt them.” Tamara’s love for the game developed a little later. “I was forced to play a bit, my junior team lost every single game so I didn’t really enjoy it.” “Now she’s the best of all of us,”
Tessa says. Members of the Marist club, they were heavily influenced by their rugby-mad dad. “Dad, [Murray Silcock] was a very good rugby player and played a lot for Nelson Bays. He’s got a lot of knowledge for the game,” Tamara says. The sibling rivalry is strong amidst the trio. “We are all horse riders as well, so we have always been very competitive with each other.” Katie showed her potential at a young age, becoming the first

Katie, also an avid motocross rider, “wrecked” her back coming off her bike. Tessa is currently on the side-line recovering from concussion after a stray knee to the head in pre-season knocked her unconscious. Tessa says they are constantly compared to another rugby mad family, the Barrett brothers. “We get it all the time.” Tamara says now that the pathways are there, they hope to one day follow the Barrett’s to national honours. “Now that women’s rugby is getting more professional, if we work hard enough it could happen.” The Mako opened their 2018 Farah Palmer Cup campaign with a 65-12 win over Taranaki. However, the side were brought back to earth in round two, demolished by Auckland 86-0. The Mako will meet North Harbour in Albany this weekend before making its first appearance at Trafalgar on September 23 when they host Wellington.
