Husband of former Nelson woman killed in attacks ‘forgives’ killer Anna Leask and Jonty Dine The husband of a former Nelson woman killed in the Christchurch terror attacks says he forgives the man allegedly responsible for the

shootings. Farid Ahmed and his wife Husna, were in separate rooms inside the Al Noor Mosque when the gunman opened fire last Friday.

Husna ran classes for children at the mosque, while her husband gave sermons. Farid Ahmed came to New Zealand in 1988 and Husna in 1994. They married the day

she arrived in Auckland and moved to Nelson that week, living here until Farid was hit by a drink driver about 15 years ago. As a gunman stormed into the

mosque firing indiscriminately at worshippers, Husna had one priority - getting the women and children to safety.

“Hold your children, come this way,” she screamed as she led the group out a side door and through a gate away from the storm of bullets and carnage behind them. Once sure they were out of harm’s way, Husna returned inside to help her wheelchair-bound husband. Husna knew he had no way of escaping the shooter and was desperate to reach him, to help him get away. As she made her way back into the mosque, she was shot and killed. Farid said he did not, and could not, hate the gunman. In fact, extraordinarily, he

has forgiven the alleged mass murderer. “There is no need for anger - anger and fighting doesn’t fix anything, but through love and care we can warm hearts. “I was asked ‘how do you feel about the person who killed your wife?’ and I said ‘I love that person because he is a human, a brother of mine,” he said. “I do not support what he did - he got it wrong. But maybe he was hurt, maybe something happened to him in his life … but the bottom line is, he is a brother of mine. “I have forgiven him and I am sure if my wife was alive she would have done the same thing. instead of killing and hate … I wish I could say that. “If I can change one person from cruelty to generosity, I’ll be honoured.” Nelson man Rashad Zafarulla’s was a friend of Husna and was also minutes away from losing a family member. His brother-in-law was also scheduled to attend Friday prayers at the Linwood Mosque but arrived after the carnage had unfolded. “The whole Muslim community in New Zealand is separated by one or two degrees, so it has just been devastating,” he says. Rashad’s brother-in-law was the first to contact him about the shooting. ‘We knew he was there,

and he knew we’d be worried.” He says his wife’s family were very close with Husna. Rashad says there is a lot of mourning and processing to be done within the Muslim community. On Sunday, hundreds of Nelsonians gathered at the Church Steps to stand in solidarity with the Muslim community. A service for the victims of the shooting will be held at the Nelson masjid, behind Old St John’s on Hardy St, this Friday March 22 from 12.30pm. It would begin with a holding hands ceremony, followed by Friday prayer at 1.30pm and a prayer for the victims at 2pm. – With NZHerald

Bail for alleged kidnapper Sara Hollyman A man accused of kidnapping, aggravated robbery and possession of an offensive weapon after an incident outside the Nelson Fun Park in November has been granted electronically-monitored bail. The man, who has interim name suppression, was granted bail by Judge Tony Zohrab

when he appeared in Nelson District Court on Monday via audio visual link. He is due to be returned to Nelson and released on bail today. He will reappear in court on April 18. The man pleaded not guilty to the charges against him in an earlier appearance after the alleged stabbing on November 16. His co-accused also pleaded not

Man guilty of indecent act Two cafe workers got a nasty surprise as they were preparing to close for the day when they saw a man standing outside exposing himself. Vaughn William Tate, 51, appeared in Nelson District Court on Monday charged with an indecent act.

He pleaded guilty to the charge and was remanded in custody until sentencing on May 6. The police summary of facts told how at around 4pm on March 6, 2018, two cafe workers saw a man standing on the edge of Collingwood St exposing his genitals.

When he saw them observing him, he began masturbating. The workers captured the man on video before he left the area only to return a short time later and sit outside the cafe before leaving again. When police located him, his trouser button was still undone, and his fly was down.

More Girl Guide leaders needed Locally Owned and Operated

Nelson Girl Guide hopefuls are sitting on waiting lists as the organisation faces a shortage of adult volunteers willing to take up the mantle. Emma Reeves is one person who has. She spends her days as hydrologist at Nelson City Council, but by night she is teaching young girls how to conquer the world. The Girl Guide unit leader has been helping to inspire the next generation of females for the past eight years, but with a lack of leaders in Nelson she is encouraging others to give it a go, too. Having been in the Girl Guides since she was five-years-old, Emma wanted to give back to the organisation and now mentors a group of girls aged five to nine-years-old at the Enner Glynn club. “I enjoy hanging out with kids. You can have a bad a day at work, but that changes when you get to your meeting. You can’t have a bad day when you are hanging out with kids.” Emma says watching the girls’ confidence grow is one of the highlights for her. And she says you don’t need to have had experience in Girl

Guides before to be a leader. “One of our leaders had nothing to do with guiding as a girl but wanted to give back to the community. Anyone can do it,” Emma says. “For me, it involves weekly meetings, preparation for meetings, camps a few times a year and a weekend activity every now and then - but the model is very flexible.” Emma helps her group work towards badges, which can involve anything from duathlons, outdoor challenges,

camping skills, performing on stage and learning about body confidence. South Island volunteer recruitment co-ordinator Andrea McClean says they are very keen to recruit new leaders in Nelson. “We’ve got girls sitting on waiting lists who need new volunteers to get them into units. Even one or two people would make a huge difference. “Sometimes, unless you put it in front of people, they don’t know this kind of thing is an option.”

There are a range of ages and groups, from Pippins, Brownies, Guides and Rangers. Prospective volunteers can decide on what would suit them best and all support and training is provided. Group meetings run for up to two hours once a week during school terms, and Emma encourages other Nelsonians to join her.

“I know everyone is really busy these days, but you really get so much more out if it than what you put in.”

Forest fire concert on track Staff reporter Plans are now well under way for the forest fire concert. The venue is being prepared and the main act, The Warratahs, are getting ready to come across the ditch and put on a great spectacle. While they are here, band members will travel to the fire site and Wakefield to get a better idea of where the fire took hold and the size of the evacuation involved. Organiser Steve Page is pleased with the progress being made. “We have some great helpers on board, especially from the Tasman District Council, and everyone involved has either

donated their time or at the very least given significant discounts on stuff we will need. All we want now is for the public to really get behind the event and come along.” One of the other bands performing is Nelson act Dust & Gold, who recently supported UB40. The duo blend Nikita Fountain’s songbird voice and Mark McKenzie’s rich baritone with an accompanying acoustic sound. Steve says the bands involved have promised a great party atmosphere. “It’s important that as a community we can get together have a laugh, enjoy a great

atmosphere and perhaps relax a bit while having fun and that’s what this day is about. We can then put the trauma of the forest fire and anything else that caused a worrisome affect behind us,” he says The event kicks off at 1pm on Saturday, April 13th at the A and P showgrounds in Richmond. Responders and volunteers get in free with their immediate family, which includes children and partners only. There is a small general public charge of $10 for adults and $5 for kids under 15. Hira community fight fire risks Sara Hollyman The Hira community is getting proactive about keeping their homes safe from future disasters in the wake of the Pigeon Valley fires. Hira volunteer rural fire gathered the community together on Sunday to share tips on how they can make their properties safer. Hira fire chief Gordon Cowie says the idea was to give people tools so they can make their properties safer after a lot of people began asking questions on how they could do so. “The thing is, if you do this you might have a chance. If you do nothing, you’re running the risk of losing your house” Principal rural fire officer Ian Reade gave a presentation of key things that residents can put in place to assist firefighters in fighting a fire.

Ian says people should begin at their house and work their way out to a 10-metre boundary to form a fire-free zone. “Timber stacked under your house, firewood stacked against the side of your house, bark gardens, hessian door mats, these are the kind of things that are going to allow embers to get in there and set your house on fire.” Ian says most houses that get caught in large fires burn down before the fire even gets to them. “Take the Pigeon Valley fire, that was throwing flames and starting new fires 500 metres in front of it, just from the intensity of the heat.” He says anywhere that leaves gather is a likely place where embers will land and start a fire. Gordon says the Hira station is the only rural station on that side of town and Nelson North

is a “scary little patch” to look after. “There’s a lot of houses stuck in the bush. They are lovely spots to build and people don’t think about it … but we can’t get a fire truck in and out. Gordon says huge lessons were learnt from the Pigeon Valley fires. “A lot of people didn’t know their neighbours, a lot of people with stock kept in their own little group, whereas someone else could have actually got them out for them so they wouldn’t have had to worry.” Fire Smart officers are available to come to people’s homes and tell them how to put some preparations in place to make their homes more fire safe, and rural officers are more than happy to come and assess properties to make sure they will have adequate access in an emergency.

Network Tasman lines charges decreasing from the beginning of April Network Tasman’s lines charges will decrease from 1 April 2019. This is good news for almost all consumers as it means the average residential customer’s lines charge will fall by $3.50 per month (including GST). “The price reduction is happening for several reasons,” says Network Tasman CEO Oliver Kearney. “Firstly, Network Tasman’s charges from Transpower for connection to the national grid have fallen and we are reducing our prices to reflect this. Secondly, in addition to our existing low-user plan we are introducing a standard pricing plan for those consumers that fall outside the low-user regulations. These changes will improve the fairness of our charges for our consumers and ensure that lines charges better reflect the costs of our services. “This means our charges will fall for 99 percent of residential consumers, if they are on the correct electricity plan. Households consuming more than 8,000kWh a year should be on a ‘standard’ plan while those consuming less than 8,000kWh a year should be on a ‘low user’ plan.” Network Tasman recommends any users who are uncertain if they are on the correct plan to contact their electricity provider in the first instance. After discounts Network Tasman’s residential prices are currently the lowest of New Zealand’s 29 electricity distribution companies (according to the MBIE Quarterly Survey of Domestic Electricity Prices, November 2018). committee meeting earlier this month. The committee will make a recommendation at Thursday’s full council meeting whether to renew it or not, based on all available information, says Nikki Harrison, group manager corporate services. The popular market runs from

He suggested the Maitai riverbank by the Trafalgar Centre, New Street or Nile St East as possible sites. “The burden of market has fallen on property owners of Montgomery Square. It’s simply not fair. It has to go, that is our bottom line.”

However, long-time market organiser Nita Knight as well as Pic Picot, have both spoken in support of the market staying put, citing it as an important community hub and vital to Nelson’s growth. Pic said the market wouldn’t work in another location and Montgomery Square businesses should adapt to the market. “I see the market as a driver or economic growth and as key to the growth of Nelson. I can’t imagine our city without it.”

Vogel reinvigorated the campaign with assisted and free immigration for British and European workers. He recognised the need for an experienced workforce for the construction of roads, bridges, railways, and telegraph lines, and the establishment of productive farms.

Gallery fills gap Kate Russell

Neville Parker never thought he would open another art gallery in Nelson. After 20 years of sharing art, he gave it up in 2016. But he couldn’t keep away. The former owner of Parker Gallery and creator of ICON Gallery in Upper Moutere has just opened Origin On Hardy - a collective of local and national art. “I tried to retire after Parker Gallery - I thought I’d done my work. But the sharing part of art, I’ve done for so long. I come to work

surrounded by beautiful things,” says Neville. Neville says he doesn’t really see his new space at 123 Hardy St as a ‘traditional gallery’. “It’s more of an arts and crafts shop - although that often brings to mind crochet booties. We’re looking at the fine end of the arts and crafts movement.” Pottery, woodwork, jewelry, glass, framed artwork and Neville’s signature metal work are all featured in the former Little Beehive Co-op space. “We want it to be as much as a place for locals to come and get a soup bowl, as for visitors to

come to get a memento.” Neville moved to Nelson from Blenheim 13 years ago and over the years he has represented more than 300 artists. He says he is always keen to help celebrate local creatives. “Locals will always get first placement, but we’ve also got work from Marlborough, Christchurch and Whangarei. “I look for the pieces that have magic to them - that tell the true story of the artist.” Neville says he has been “absolutely blown away” by the interest so far.

Special Housing Areas: It is more than a little interesting to discover that the current government has announced the scrapping of the socalled “Special Housing Areas” legislation. It suggests that it is copping flak for previous foolish decision-making. This iniquitous and in many cases severely damaging, housing policy had to be stopped. Many people throughout the country are now suffering the consequences of a policy which has all but destroyed the normal environmental expectations. The worst part of the legislation is its ability to allow the likes of Nelson City Council to determine where high- density high-rise development is to occur. That is not to say that there are many situations where highrise is perfectly acceptable but for some strange and irresponsible reason the legislators at the time could not see the damage that was glaringly going to occur. In-

stead, had the focus been put on the vagueness of the Resource Management Act, which has arguably been responsible for at least a 30% increase in housing costs, we would all have greatly benefited. Hopefully, candidates for the forthcoming local elections will recognise how badly structured the RMA is and work to lobby government to make it the prescriptive document it must be. Kerry Neal Road toll: Arguably, one of the reasons our road toll is so high is very poor decisions made by the roading authorities. For example, leading into Richmond, arrows on the road showing which lane to move to aren't just confusing - you can't see them when cars cover them. Clear overhead signs are obviously needed. Even worse is culpably keeping vegetation so high on busy roundabouts - like the one on the bottom of Trafalgar Street - that motorists can’t see what's coming from all directions. Obviously, motorists need all the help

The loss of 50 innocent lives including children as young as three is horrific enough. We must add to this 36 wounded and thousands left with lifelong emotional scars. We grieve with the families for their loved ones. We pray for the recovery of those in critical care. They are Kiwis and this is an attack on us. We stand side by side with our Nelson Muslim com-

munity and must ensure they feel safe, valued and loved. We acknowledge the bravery and humanity of those confronting Fridays horror. Police, St John Ambulance staff and the dedicated doctors and nurses at Christchurch Hospital deserve our praise and thanks. There was also extraordinary acts of bravery by citizens that saved lives. This was an attack on our Kiwi values. This racist monster is wanting to ferment hatred and violence. We must respond by reasserting louder than ever our values of freedom of religion, respect for all cultures and zero tolerance for violence. We must also ensure we give

him no opportunity to peddle his hate through his trial. He has silenced 50 innocent people. We make a mockery of our justice system if any opportunity is given to him to further spread his evil rantings. This tragedy is also a brutal reminder that New Zealand’s geographical isolation is no protection from the international rise of extremism and terrorism. We also need to recognise that all cultures and religions can produce radicals capable of mass murder. There are three areas where we need to ask some hard questions as we look to prevent such atrocities in future.

Every few weeks the Nelson Weekly speaks to someone interesting with an interesting story to tell. This week we sit down with Jenn Currie who recently returned to Nelson from overseas and turned up to help work at Saturday’s Bryan Adams’ gig that was supported by Dave Dobbyn and Jordan Luck, only to find herself on stage filming the action. How did you come to be working at the event in the first place? I told the woman running the gig that I had worked events before, so she put me on the waiting list. I wasn’t even sure if I was going to work at all. Then she called and she asked if I could help clean up the rubbish after and I said ‘sure’. It’s a good excuse for good concert. Then she told me on Saturday ‘I’ve got a new job for you. I need you to operate a camera’. I had no idea what that was going to entail. ‘Sure thing,’ I said. So I just rocked up and they had a different company in charge of the camera. Then they asked ‘what experience have you got?’ There was dead silence. None of us had ever worked on cameras before. What was their reaction? I think they were a little bit taken aback. He said ‘they are not just your phone cameras’. We

Then we were then down in front of the stage learning and the guy points on to the stage and says ‘that’s where you will be’. We didn’t realise we would be on stage. That must have been a bit overwhelming?

I was pretty nervous to be honest not only have I not operated one, but on stage everyone could see me. So, I had to try and look like a professional even though I had no idea what I was doing. It took a while to get on stage as I didn’t have the right accreditation. But

they ended up getting me my own pass which meant I could go anywhere I wanted to. Then I got about five minutes of practise. It was fixed to one spot on the front corner of the stage. Luckily, I didn’t have to lift it because it was so heavy. They were like ‘don’t touch any of these buttons’ so that was a bit intense. So you filmed Dave Dobbyn and Jordan Luck? Yea. Bryan Adams had their own people who were probably a bit more experienced. The first time I went out on the stage I expected people to tell me to go away but they didn’t. it was quite surreal. How did you enjoy it? It was great. It was a bit different and it was exciting to get on stage. We actually met Dave Dobbyn afterwards, so we got to go and eat in the catering area and he came in with the band. We had a good chat. He was really nice, and he was talking about how he was finding it quite hard with everything going on in Christchurch. It was a really human moment. And what did you think of the concert? It was great. I got to watch Bryan Adams and then worked through the night picking up the rubbish and helping take down the stage, so it came full circle.

New Age Concern website launched: Age concern Nelson Tasman have launched a new website featuring an events calendar for over 65-year-olds. The new site, at www. ageconnnect.org.nz, provides a snapshot of AgeConnect and the new events calendar helps connect people to events and activities and features regular and oneoff events, such as educational seminars, social outings, fitness classes, craft groups and shows. It is updated regularly with new items frequently being added.

A lack of staff and high application numbers has contributed to 19 per cent of resource consents missing their deadline between October and December. Course no obstacle for Wairua Warriors Jonty Dine

Trevor Voyce was “suffering” as he fought for first place in the annual obstacle race, Wairua Warrior. After failing to negotiate two of the final obstacles at the Cable Bay Adventure Park course, Trevor was punished with 60 burpees. He had gained a substantial lead heading into the finish, however, soon the pack began to catch up on the frontrunner. The adventure racer managed to summon some extra reserves and powered home, 30 seconds ahead of the next racer to claim the win in his first ever Wairua Warrior. “I hate burpees, it was real suffering, I definitely need a drink now,” he said after the event. Trevor says he could feel his lead being diminished and was disappointed to fall at the final hurdle. “I had a decent gap till those last two, that’s where they caught up on me, it was close.” Trevor says it was “the grip stuff ” which he found most difficult.

Photo: Shuttersport. “I used to do a bit of adventure racing, so I had a bit of a base on the endurance side of things, but the obstacles were a fresh challenge.” Just shy of 600 racers took part in the fifth annual obstacle race on Saturday morning, an event which organizer Greg Witika says is getting bigger and better each year. Runners had to negotiate inverted ladder rope and wall climbs, traverse bars, barbed wire crawls, balance beams the ‘ditch of doom’ and plenty more agonising obstacles.

Greg says the Wairua Warrior is about taking time out of our technologically dependent lives. “We live in a day and age where if you need to know something you ask ‘Dr Google’ or go to Youtube and we get lazy, I try to get people to stop, be present, and ask questions.” Greg says each year they try to be more innovative with the obstacles. “We want to challenge people to think on their feet. To me that’s special and why I love doing what I do.”

SportS Cricket: Only one game was played during the final week of Tasman Premier League cricket round robin, the table-topping Dolphins beating ACOB in Blenheim. Both games scheduled for Nelson were abandoned when it was deemed that wickets could not be prepared in time after much-needed rain fell in the province this week. The result means Dolphins will meet ACOB again next week in the semis, also to be staged in Blenheim, while Stoke Nayland will end up second qualifier, and will host the Falcons in Nelson. Cycling: Age proved no barrier for dozens of cycling stalwarts on Saturday with many of the South Island’s top master’s track cyclists in action. The Tasman Wheelers Track Cycling Carnival included short and sharp sprint events to longer

track races. The competition was very close in the A grade with local trackies Brett Grimwood, Warwick Spence, Phil Hunt and Paul Michel always sprinting for the finish line with only tyre widths often separating them. The over 65-grade featured some of the track cycling stalwarts with Roger Smith, Dave Fairweather and Murray Cameron all doing their best to outdo each other. The carnival also catered for Paraplegic competitors with Peter Restrieuax from Ashburton, Merv. Grewar from Hokitika and Brian Jacobsen from Takaka all proved very keen to sprint against each other. The Mighty Masters Track Cycling Carnival wound up with the 10-lap feature handicapped “Wheel” race. The hectic race to the finish saw Warwick Spence just edging out Phil Hunt with Trevor Cameron not far behind. Football: With grounds rock hard and the region’s drought set to continue,

the call has been made to delay the start of the junior football season from April 6 to May 4. Nelson Bays Football manager Nic Foster says after careful deliberation, they had little choice but to postpone the junior season’s kick-off. “The drought has adversely affected the grounds and whilst there has been rain, at this stage, it is not enough to encourage grass growth and get the junior pitches ready for April 6.” Nic says he has worked through an audit of every ground in the region and can only activate about 16 pitches by seasons start. “Most of these pitches are senior fields, they won’t be in great condition but they are playable.” The risk of further damaging the fields and the possible Health and Safety implications of is a concern to the councils and NBF but the 16 available pitches may mean senior men’s and women’s football will be unaffected with those competitions still set to commence on April 6.

The action will start with Tasman Trophy cross-over games, points scored against fellow sub-union sides being carried forward to the second part of the season, a sub-union round, followed by semis and culminating in a sub-union final. Tasman Rugby Union chief executive Tony Lewis said there were several reasons behind the new-look format, including the fact it suited the Mako selectors better. The solid midfield combination of Nick Foxley and Chris Kerslake will provide the backbone of the backline while Kershawl Sykes-Martin will

look to build on a strong debut season in 2018. Prediction - Champions. The country’s oldest club boast the strongest squad on paper but will likely be without a number of its stars for majority of the season. David Havili, Ethan Blackadder and Quinten Strange have cemented themselves in the Crusaders squad and will be unlikely to feature for club this season. ooking back over the past few decades, it’s amazing to think how much our lives have changed in the digital world.

These days email accounts are part of our everyday life. We use them to communicate and manage all manner of online interactions and transactions without a second thought. Our email address has become our digital ‘identity’ – we use it to set up and control our other online accounts. For that reason alone, it’s really important that we protect it. One of the best ways to do this is to make sure your email account password is strong, and different to all your other passwords. Protecting your email account from attack is crucial. If someone gets hold of your account password, they have access to a world of personal and financial information that’s stored in your email. This means they could: •

watch your emails to see when you’re due to make a payment to someone and swap out the bank account details so the payment goes into their account instead

•

download all your contacts and send them an email that tricks them into clicking on a link that downloads a virus

•

use your email address to log in to other online accounts, reset the passwords and access those accounts.

Our email address has become our digital ‘identity’ – we use it to set up and control our other online accounts.

It’s very easy for them to do. It’s also very concerning because the impacts of any of these cyber attacks can be significant and have serious results for you, your family and friends, and your finances. Because of this, it’s important that your email account is super protected. And by super protected, I mean it needs to have its own unique and strong password.

Jonty Dine Following the devastating terror attacks in Christchurch on Friday, two football matches that were set to be played in Nelson at the weekend were called off. Nelson Suburbs and Tasman United were scheduled to play Christchurch teams Coastal Spirit and the Canterbury United Dragons. Suburbs operations manager Gary Hinks was part of a lockdown at his grandchild’s day care centre. He and his daughter went to the day-care at around 3pm and were told they could not leave. “They locked the gates and the doors and had us all in a room in the middle of the daycare.” It wasn’t until three hours later that they were able to go home. Gary says the football community is in mourning and the decision to postpone the match against Coastal Spirit was the right one.

That way, if someone does get hold of one of your passwords, they won’t be able to use the same password to get into your other accounts. If you have trouble remembering passwords (let’s face it, we all do), write them down but store them away from your computer and phone.

Nelson sides sent a strong statement after round one of the E’stel Tasman Trophy with five wins from five fixtures over their regional rivals on Saturday. The defending champions enjoyed a dominant, albeit at times sloppy victory at Neale Park. Nelson ran in three tries in a scrappy affair against Moutere to claim a 23-10 first up win. Players stood arm in arm before kick-off for a moment of silence in honour of the 49 victims of the Christchurch mosque shootings. Skipper Chris Kerslake opened the scoring for the host’s season as he crashed over after a sustained rumble from the forwards. Pelefoti Siaki scored Nelson’s second from a Moutere lineout error soon after, as the visitors had no answer for Nelson’s powerful pack. Ben Finau pulled one back for his side as the men from Moutere managed to stay in the fight.

A scrappy start to the second saw another referee’s warning as Moutere crept another three points closer.
