Ructions are appearing around the Nelson City Council table with some being accused of using negative comments over council performance to grandstand for political purposes - despite the next election being a year away.

“It would seem, surprisingly at this early stage, that some councillors are entering into the election scene already,” acting Mayor Ian Barker told the Nelson Weekly. The comments come after the 2017/18 annual report was adopted last Thursday. Mel Courtney was one councillor who spoke negatively of the annual report, accusing the council

of “overpromising and underdelivering” in the area of infrastructure in particular, and saying up to 40 per cent of council’s targets had not been met. “I thought there had to be realistic point of view. You can’t say it’s a good performance. It was far from satisfactory, it really was. We can do better, we have to do better.”

However, Ian believes such comments are just signs of some early campaigning going on for the October 2019 election. He says the negativity at the meeting was “counterproductive to teamwork and collaboration”. “We’re nearly into November, what we are looking at is way back in the past. Rather than griping about what happened

they should be working positively - we are four months into the next year. “Councils can always do better. There’re always problems, you can never be perfect. I believe we have achieved a lot.” Mel, who is very active on social media, told the Weekly that

Historic boarding house lives on Jonty Dine The historic Rutherford Boarding House at Nelson College is set to reopen its doors today. Rutherford House ceased to exist as a boarding house in 2014, but thanks to extensive renovations it will once again be home to Nelson College students. Headmaster Gary O’Shea says boarding is part of what makes Nelson College so special. “Boarding is central to the culture, it’s not just a day school, it’s a massive community and gives us that special character that we want to take into the future.” Six years ago, the college’s boarding numbers were around 180, which meant three boarding houses wasn’t feasible. The board conducted an extensive review which brought forward several options including selling, bulldozing and walking away. “The decision was made to modernise the two heritage buildings in a multimillion-dollar project.”

Ian noted successful events, such as the Nelson Arts Festival and Opera in the Park, along with the Upper Trafalgar Street pedestrian precinct as highlights over the past year.

Nelson manufacturer wins Asian brand award Nelson-based Sujon Berryfruits has picked up an international award. Sujon won the ‘Best New Individual Brand Award’ at the Asian Branding & Franchising Association Awards, held in Hong Kong this month. Sujon’s newly-appointed Asian Agent, OneNZ, entered Sujon in the ABFA Awards. OneNZ is a Hong Kong-based natural foods distributor which became interested in Sujon’s Blackcurrant Powder after reading new research published by Chichester University in the UK about Sujon’s powder natural recovery benefits.

Despite the caning, the fagging and bitterly cold nights, he says he has only fond memories of his time at Rutherford. “I loved it, coming from a small rural primary school to be surrounded by hundreds of boys and sport was overwhelming, but so exciting.” Iain says there was a hierarchy that existed in the house, known as ‘fagging’, third formers would be required to clean the boots of seniors. Young ones who played up would be strung up by their pants on the boiler pipes. Certain masters would not be messed with due to their abilities with the cane. During winter months, he says, you couldn’t possibly bury yourself in enough blankets to keep warm. “It was rough and tough but such a unique experience, you would probably call it bullying these days, but for us it was normal.” He says the boys always man-

Photo: Supplied. aged to have fun whether it was inter-house competitions, using their church hats as projectiles or sneaking out to meet girls. “There was never a dull moment.” He says he grew very close with fellow boarders and remains friends with them to this day. “There were 21 of us who started and 20 of us went right through, so we were a pretty tight group.” Barry Knight is a former Nelson College head boy and boarded at Rutherford from 1951-56. He says military training was still an important aspect of school life during this time. “I remember they took us up to

Trentham and we learnt how to shoot an SLR semi-automatic. Windows were a luxury that boarders in the ‘50s had to live without as only canvas curtains separated them and the subzero temperatures outside. However, he says they were built tough. “A lot of the boys were farmers and would have some pretty rough trips just to get to the school.” Built in 1931, Rutherford House is named after one of the College’s most distinguished Old Boys, Ernest Rutherford. Gary says the refurbishments should hopefully ensure the 80-year-old buildings will sustain boarding at the school well into the next century.

NEWS Weekend crashes keep police busy: Three crashes in just over four hours kept Nelson emergency services on their toes last weekend. Police attended three separate incidents on Sunday morning, ranging in severity. At 3.40am a car ploughed into a power pole on Annesbrook Drive - the driver did not appear to be injured but the power company was called. Two hours later, police were again alerted, but this time to a car that had driven off Atawhai Drive and gone into the water just before 6am. The male driver was uninjured. The third crash happened just before 8am when a campervan carrying three people rolled on the Motueka Valley Highway. Police say one person had minor cuts, while the other two appear uninjured.

Hardy Street had its engine revving for Nelson’s first Street Hop event in central Nelson on Sunday. More than 70 people from across the Top of the South registered their classic cars to be on show in Hardy Street on Sunday, for the event organised by Uniquely Nelson and Morrison Square. The event was a fundraiser for Nelson Hospice and aimed to support local businesses on an otherwise quiet Sunday. Hardy Street was closed to traffic from Trafalgar St to Collingwood St for the 71 classic cars which were on display. People were invited to cast a vote for their favourite car, with people’s choice being taken out by Nelson man Tony Anderson with his 1959 Buick, by just three votes. Tony entered three cars but says he first came across the Buick when he was in America and thought it would be a good way to “make a few bucks” by on-selling it. “Once it arrived in port though, the wife saw it and it

Three-year-old Theo Gordon is the lucky new owner of a Jeep, thanks to his poppa. Uniquely Nelson manager Simon Duffy says the day was a huge success and was so much

more than he expected. “I’m blown away, we thought we might get 1500 people here, but I think there would be easily 4000-5000 people. He says the event offered something different to a regular car show as it encompassed local businesses and live music in a more street-festival type setting. He estimated that they raised

around $4000 for Nelson Tasman Hospice. Nelson Tasman Hospice fundraising marketing officer, Joanna Davis, says they are so grateful to be the chosen charity. “We were so lucky to have beautiful weather. People love cars and I think the vintage theme added something different, too.”

Wastewater plant causes a stink: An unpleasant odour around the city has been confirmed as coming from the Nelson North wastewater treatment plant, specifically the oxidation ponds. The facility is operated by Nelmac on council’s behalf. Richard Lester from Nelmac says there is currently a problem with the balance of algae and microorganisms within the ponds. “Up until now the ponds have been in a very healthy state, but unfortunately, as with all natural pond processes, they can be affected by sudden changes in the microbiology. In this case, the change happened very quickly and we could not contain it.” With good weather conditions, council expects that the odours should slowly diminish over the next two weeks.

Power company: leave us or pay more Sara Hollyman A brand-new power company is warning its customers to jump ship or receive power bills up to five times their normal amount. Power Direct, a Nelson-based company that was launched in June by parent company Mytax. co.nz, provides wholesale pricing to customers, charging them for what they use, when they use it. Power Direct’s mission was to save Kiwis money on their power.

However, just months after their launch, they are scrambling to “reduce their customer base to zero” after the ‘spot’ price of power went through the roof. Operations manager Jared Lock says the issue that the energy sector is facing is something they have never seen before. He says a large unplanned gas outage at Pohokura - an offshore gas production facility - coupled with lower than average lake levels have meant that the supply of

energy in New Zealand has been significantly reduced. This has led to a dramatic increase in the spot price of power. An email sent out to customers told them that remaining with Power Direct during this time was no longer an option. “At this stage, we are advising all our customers to move to a fixed priced retailer.” Pohokura isn’t expected to be up and running again until late November at the earliest, which

means Power Direct’s wholesale pricing will remain much higher than companies that offer fixedpricing. “As a wholesale power retailer, the spot price of power is passed through to the customer at the current price when the power is consumed,” Jared says. “While we generally see price spikes that last a couple of hours/ days, the above market conditions have meant that high prices could be in force for weeks/months.”

He says the spot price has been anywhere between two and five times the normal rate since the outage and the flow-on effect to consumers’ bills is huge. “We didn’t think that it was fair to not provide our customers with the full information and just expect them to pay these huge costs moving forward.” It was not clear whether the company would just be put into hibernation until power prices return or be shutdown.

College girls trade up for awards Charles Anderson Six students from Nelson College for Girls have got a head start on their potential career – coming away with the top awards for their respective trades. It is the first time that so many students have come top in their class – ranging from hospitality and tourism to hairdressing and uniformed services. Teacher Alex Coombs King says all the students have done Nelson College for Girls proud and have enjoyed going off site to NMIT and Whenua Iti for their training. “It’s good to have a different place of learning, a different type of learning.”

Danita McLaren, who wants to work in tourism, came out top of the services industries ranks and had a hands-on experience with Wilsons Abel Tasman. “It was so nice just being out on the boats and the Abel Tasman is so good.” Sapphire Hamill won the award for ‘uniformed services’ which covers the police, fire service, paramedics and civil defence. Aiya Khuekaew Na Lumpoon won the award for hospitality front of house and Eilish Van Zeist Driver won the award for hospitality kitchen. Samantha Griffith won the award for hairdressing and Phoenix Moka won the award for Manaaki Tāpoi.

When Pic Picot walks into a crowded room he can’t scan people’s faces looking for people he knows. Despite running a successful, multinational peanut butter business, he can’t look a spreadsheets, or write an email or text by looking at the letters on his phone or computer. He also can’t drive. Instead, in rooms he will walk up close and look at you out of the side of his eye and simply ask: “Who am I speaking to?” Instead of typing, he uses voice activation to write his texts and emails. And instead of driving, he walks with his trusty dog Fido who came into his life five years ago when Pic’s macular degeneration got too difficult for him to navigate alone. “More than anything though, it’s good in business as it has forced me to delegate,” Pic says. “It also helps when you are at a fancy pants business meeting with people in suits and then there is a dog in the corner licking himself.”

The condition affects the central vision, impacting on the ability to drive, read, watch television, undertake many hobbies and recognise faces. Pic was first diagnosed with macular degeneration in his 20s, however, his mother had also had it. “I first noticed the trouble at night time, looking at lighthouses I had to look at them sideways. Then it got worse. “But my vision won’t disappear altogether, my peripheral vision is pretty good. But I can’t focus enough to read text or recognise faces.” He says it’s a huge honour to be an ambassador and recommends anyone concerned about their eyes to get them checked. Woman charged after assault in car park Police have charged a young woman with assault following an incident in Buxton Square Carpark last weekend. The incident occurred in the early hours of last Sunday morning, October 21, when two teenage girls were threatened by a group of eight young women near the toilets in the carpark between 12.30 and 1am. The two girls sought help from two men who were sitting in a nearby car. The girls got into the car, a dark coloured sedan with mismatched mag wheels, and the group of young women are believed to have then attacked the car. The men drove the two girls away from the carpark to safety. Police were looking to locate the two men to speak with them, and they have made contact with Police. The young woman who has been charged with assault in relation to the incident, appeared in the Nelson Youth Court on Monday. Police would like to speak to anyone else who was in the carpark at the time and witnessed the incident, or anyone who has information that may be relevant to the investigation. Harry and Meghan’s royal tour to the region The region had a taste of the royals on Monday when the Duke and Duchess of Sussex flew in to spend some time at Totaranui in the Abel Tasman National Park. A planned tree planting was called off due to weather, with the royals instead joining school children and youth volunteers for brownies and tea in the marquee. As Harry and Meghan served themselves, a local kuia commented, “There should be someone serving them!” After meeting Harry and Meghan, Milan Chapman, 15, of Motueka High School, said, “They were very nice, chatty and relaxed.” Pippa Struck, 13, of Golden Bay High School, added, “They were just so calm. You see them on TV, but when you meet them you realise they’re just normal people.” Saskia Gray, 16, an Abel Tasman Youth Ambassador, commented, “It was a great opportunity. I’m very fortunate to have this chance. They acted very down-to-earth, and they genuinely care about the people and the land.” After a group photo, the royals were presented with gifts including a painting of three tui by Takaka artist Robin Slow, which represents them and their unborn child. Barney, of Onetahua Marae in Nelson, explained, “The middle represents the god of war and we don’t want to put our women into that space. We want to be inclusive but especially Meghan, because she’s expecting, we don’t want to put her at any risk.” After a waiata, Harry addressed the group, saying, “Thank you so much for having us today. The weather forecast was a lot worse than this

They can also pose a safety hazard, for example if children come into contact with the lines when climbing trees. If you think your trees are getting too close to your service line, get the right advice and help to trim them back: Option 1: Contact an electricity network-trained arborist to take care of the work safely. 10 years of Babyfocus for Valerie Helping to guide and support more than 250 families over the last decade has been a rewarding experience for Nelson’s Valerie Schroeder. Kate Russell reports.

It’s a sunny Thursday morning and a certain calmness resides over St Lukes Church in Victory, where new parents are learning a different approach to parenting. Eight content babies, and their equally content parents, are just finishing up their weekly Babyfocus session with facilitator Valerie, who has been involved in early childhood education for over 55 years. Last month marked 10 years since Valerie started the classes, and a celebration was held at Fairfield House with past and present families. The classes are based on the pioneering approach of Hungarian paediatrician Dr Emmi Pikler. Emmi, who opened an orphanage in Hungary after World War II, believed children were capable beings who should be seen as a person and partner, right from birth. Through observation and communication, she believed chil-

Photo: Kate Russell. dren could move and play in their own way and it's that thinking that Valerie has implemented into her classes. “For me, I’d been working in ECE since I was 18 as a kindergarten teacher in Dunedin. Then I was

involved with Playcentre and Parents as First Teachers for 16 years. “Then I heard about Emmi Pikler and her work and I started the classes in 2008. She had a unique way of caring for babies. Often, we think we need to rush through

everything.” The classes are based on respect and involve parents following the babies’ lead, letting them explore while parents observe what interests them. There is lots of quiet time to watch

and focus on the babies, how they move and how they solve the problems that arise for them. “This was just a whole new way of looking at things and gave me a whole new passion and interest. We’re seeing babies with new eyes.” The classes were first held at the Victory Community Centre and moved to Founders Park and YKids before finally settling at St Lukes on Emano St, more than six years ago. The course is for babies aged between six-weeks and one-year old. Valerie says courses for the remainder of the year are full, but there will be openings for next year’s sessions. Shanine Raggett has been attending the classes since her son Ruben was eight-weeks-old. He’s now eight-months-old and Shanine says it’s “the one thing she won’t let up on” in their schedule. “When Ruben was born, I rushed around trying to do everything. But through Babyfocus, I’ve learned how to slow down. This is the only thing we need to go to." Meanwhile, Valerie says it’s been a “pretty special” ten years. “Seeing the parents develop in confidence and making supportive and lasting friendships has been lovely.”

Day of the Dead festival brings a touch of Mexico to Nelson Sara Hollyman Mexican culture was alive and kicking at Dia de los Muertos - the Day of the Dead festival. Founders Park transformed on Sunday into a fiesta of traditional culinary treats and tricks for those who came through the gates to celebrate. Organiser Jesus Ruiz Lopez says the day was about celebrating family and taking a moment to remember those who have passed. It’s also a festival that is close to his heart. “It reminds me of home, very much. It’s nice to see families here enjoying the day.” Jesus says, after moving to Nelson 10 years ago he wanted a way to give back to the community, and the festival is his way of doing that. Now in its seventh year, all the food is still made by hand using Jesus’ grandmother’s recipes. “Next year we are going to change it up a bit and let some others bring through their recipes.” He says, in a time when nearly everyone has Mexican food in their

home, whether it be nachos or enchiladas, it’s important to remind people that these foods are traditionally made by hand. The festival, which traditionally runs for three days from November 1-3, is growing in popularity with around 2000 people coming through the gates of Founders. Traditional Mexican food, beverages, and produce were on offer as well as sugar-skull face painting which had a solid queue throughout the day. Seven-year-old Poppy Sheehan used 22kgs of sugar to make 38 sugar-skulls to sell at the festival with her dad Mark. “She found a recipe in a cook book that I got given for my birthday and tried it out, then she had the idea to make heaps of them to sell here,” says Mark. “They are a really traditional part of the Day of the Dead celebration, but they are really labour intensive.” The sugar skull traditionally represents a departed soul and is placed on the ‘ofrenda’ or gravestone to honour the return of their spirit.

Sara Hollyman Nelson Fire Station needs more volunteers as their numbers dwindle to just 10 – half as many as they ideally need to adequately service the region. Volunteer firefighters held an open day at the Nelson Fire Station on Sunday to encourage people to sign up, while dispersing misconceptions about what it takes to become a volunteer. Volunteer Jason Everett says they are the lifeline of stations around the region, attending about 50 call outs a year from Nelson alone. “Nelson is the only station with paid firefighters until you get to Christchurch, so that leaves a lot of stations manned solely by volunteers.” He says the ideal number would be around 20 volunteers at the Nelson Station, but says all main stations are looking for volunteers. Jason stresses that a lot of people who may think that they may like to try it but not have the right set of skills, are probably exactly who they are looking for. “We’ve got people in our team who are an engineer, car salesperson, truck driver, motel owner and a computer technician. We all come together at a moment’s notice and we provide other skills that the paid team may not have.” He says they don’t only fight fires but also are involved in community safety and education and are fully trained the same way as career firefighters. Builder Chris Noonan says it was always something he wanted to do so he took the leap and has never looked back. “It’s a sense of giving back, you feel rewarded and, of course, we get to play with some pretty cool toys.” He says it’s not as dramatic as what you see on TV, but some aspects are the same. “When you’re putting a fire out, you’ve got to slow everything down and really think about every move you make. Volunteer Matthew Riordan says volunteers are given a pager which they are free to take with them whenever they like. “If you don’t want to be on call you don’t answer the pager, that’s the extent of the commitment really, apart from the training.” To find out more about becoming a volunteer contact Jason.Everett@fireandemergency.nz

Your Voice Council meeting attendance: At an ordinary meeting of the Nelson City Council on Thursday, 25th October, 2018, apologies were received from: Her Worship the Mayor, Rachel Reese, Deputy Mayor Paul Matheson, and Councillors Fulton, McGurk, and Noonan. The main subject discussed would appear to be the adoption of the annual report. Back in the days when Paul Matheson was Mayor, he was looking into reducing the num-

ber of councillors by 2 but nothing was done, but if council was reduced by 2 now, more than $80,000 per year would be saved. After watching portions of live streams of recent meetings, it would appear that some of the councillors add little in-put to the meetings. A. Nelson Matters MP’s from around New Zealand were in Richmond last week for the Select Committee hearings to consider 137 submissions on the bill I am sponsoring for the Tasman District Council to enable the Waimea Community Dam. The proponents did a powerful job of advocating the schemes merits. There was a chorus of evidence from water quality scientists that the Waimea River has a serious problem with water quality caused by the insufficient summer flows and that this project was the best solution. This included respected organisations like the Cawthron Institute, Fish and Game, Tonkin & Taylor, highly-recognised local

Landcare Scientist Andrew Fenemor and former Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment Dr Morgan Williams. It was telling that there were no submissions against the scheme from any freshwater scientists or ecologists. The Green Party’s opposition to this scheme exposes them as unscientific and impractical in their approach to New Zealand’s environment challenges. The economic evidence was even more compelling. We heard that the Waimea Plains is the world capital of boysenberry growing with 60% of the NZ crop and 30% of global production. This unique Nelson industry will have no future without

the dam and a secure water supply. We also heard from Waimea Nurseries, the largest commercial nursery in New Zealand, employing 200 full time and casual staff. We were told the future of this 50 year old business in Nelson would also be at risk without water. We also heard from many farmers and horticulturists with 95% in favour of the project. A few opposed the scheme because of the huge cost it would impose. This debunks the claim orchardists are getting a free ride. Their financial commitment to this scheme is huge. The submissions from industry were universally in favour.

Everyone wants more of our logs, fruit, fish and meat to be processed in New Zealand. The point made by Nelson Pine, Aica NZ and the Alliance Meatworks who collectively employ over 500 Nelsonians, was that a secure water supply is essential to their future. Nelson Pine Industries faces shutting down for up to 100 days a year due to insufficient water for processing, under the no dam minimum flows rules. We did hear submissions from recreational organisations like Fish and Game, Federated Mountain Clubs of NZ and the Walking Access Commission that the public access provisions in the bill needed to be strength-

ened. I will be working with the Tasman District Council and Select Committee to achieve this. I want people to be able to enjoy the improved fishing, swimming and recreational opportunities. I encourage people who doubt the merits of this project to go to www.parliament.nz and read submitters evidence. Any doubts of the scheme by my parliamentary colleagues were quelled by the quality of the submissions in support. My goal is to try and get this Bill through Parliament by year's end. Big turn out for Masked Parade A cavalcade of colour lit up Nelson last Friday for the annual Masked Parade and Carnivale. Thousands lined the CBD for the parade with more than 2000 donning a mask to march through the crowd. Mahana School were crowned the most “weird and wonderful” school while “Simple Sells” won the best nonschool category.

Mahana also took out the Kim Merry supreme award while the award for the “nuttiest” costume went to Nelson Central School for their take on portraying all the senses – including eyes, ears, noses, mouths and hands. 70 years on and it’s still going strong! At its recently-held AGM , the Nelson Tasman Kindergarten Association celebrated its steadfast dedication to providing quality early childhood education and care for young children across the region since the late 1940’s. “We made a special announcement that it was our 70th birthday, cut the cake, and celebrated with the parents who were present,” says Trish Casey, Chief Education Officer. “Kindergarten has been part of the New Zealand way of life – that’s

where early childhood education started in our country. Even though the landscape’s changed a lot, and there’s lots of different providers now, we’ve always been there; we’ve always been associated with preparing children for school.” After the second world war, kindergartens became community hubs and sprang up all over New Zealand, forming associations comprised of parents, teachers and community leaders. Nelson’s first free kindergarten was established in a public hall in Nelson South in October 1948. hurangi, Domett, Robinson, Fell and Chaytor took centre stage to belt out the immortal words of the haka which was composed back in the '60s. The competition was revived by assistant principal Ron Kelly 13 years ago. He says houses were judged based on a range of criteria including entry,

exit, timing, dress code, volume and gusto. Monro, led by Isaiah Malaulau, took out top spot for their hearty rendition. Isaiah was presented with a new look trophy, built from West Coast pounamu mounted on rimu from the old Rutherford Boarding House.

Arts fest team ‘thrilled’ The Nelson Arts Festival took on the challenge this year to present something for everyone – and was rewarded with audiences turning up in droves. From sold-out shows such as An Evening with Michael Leunig and Royal New Zealand Ballet, through to events that relied on community input such as The Flag Project, the 2018 Festival set out to have an impact on people’s lives as well as the life of our city. Festival Director Charlie Unwin is thrilled with the response to the Festival programme. “Festivals have a specific role in our community. They not only bring national and international artists and companies to our city, but they create an environment for people to celebrate and contribute to their own community.”

Planning is well underway for the 2019 festival already, especially as it will be the 25th anniversary. The festival itself is in a period of transition, moving from the auspices of the Nelson City Council, to being managed by a newly-formed Nelson Festivals Trust, which will take over operations for the 2019 Festival and beyond. The chair of the new trust, Brent Thawley, says it is an exciting moment for the festival. “Our aim is to make sure the Festival is well positioned to deliver great arts and cultural experiences into the future and is an event that all of our residents feel proud of and want to be part of.” Councillor Gaile Noonan says that over 24 years, the festival has written its own story, becoming a focus for Nelson’s creative spirit as well as an important economic driver.

Nelson City Brass are going Celtic for their end of year concert with the help of some special guests. ‘Cry of the Celts’ is on at the Theatre Royal this weekend for two shows only - one evening and one afternoon performance. The concert will also feature musical director Nigel Weeks, the Nayland College Boys Choir, pipers and award-winning local Irish dancer JaymeeNiamh Smith. Nelson City Brass secretary Wayne Jennens says they decided to try something “a bit different” to see out the year. “This time of year we always do a proms concert, but we thought we’d try something new. We haven’t done anything like this before and we thought a Celtic concert would work well in Nelson.”

It's 1981 in the back blocks of Nelson and a family feud is fermenting. SpOrtS BRIDGE: Nelson players Steve Gray and Lindsey Guy won the NBS Golden Bay Pairs bridge tournament held in Takaka on Saturday. Gray and Guy’s average score of 63.5 percent over the two sessions of play was enough to give them the victory by 1.73 over fellow Nelson players Carol and Roger Minchin. Garry Brunton from the Richmond club, in combination with Pam Dravitski from Nelson, was third. The tournament attracted a field of 104 players from throughout the Top of the South region and Canterbury. It was the first tournament to be held at the Golden Bay club’s new facility at the Golden Bay Recreation Centre. CRICKET: Nelson College cricketer Jack Morris has been named the New Zealand junior indoor cricket ambassador for the next three years. Jack was a member of the New Zealand indoor team which finished third at the recent world series in Christchurch, behind Australia and South Africa. Jack will fill the role until the 2020 World Cup in South Africa. BASKETBALL: Nelson Giant Finn Delany put on a stunning display for the New Zealand Breakers on Sunday, slamming home a career high 27 points from the bench as his side dispatched the Adelaide 36s 114-94. The 23-year-old forward also notched two rebounds and four assists in his 20-minute stint on the court. BOWLS: Stoke Bowls hosted two championships on Sunday in the Women's Singles and the Men's Triples. An absorbing Women's Singles final saw Kirsten Edwards beat Helen Moseley 21-14. In the Men's Triples final Peter Hodson, James Pugh and Dave Merritt beat Robbie Reed, Atholl Campbell and Dennis Pilkington 23-2.

Tasman United has opened its season with back to back losses, going down 2-1 to Hamilton Wanderers at Trafalgar Park on Sunday afternoon. A first-half own-goal put the hosts on the back foot and ultimately cost them the points, despite a stunning second half that created at least three clear chances that either went just wide or hit the post. Coach Andy Hedge says, after a poor first half effort, his side did not deserve to take the

Next week, Tasman will travel to the capital to take on Team Wellington with a 2pm kick off.

She may have been a bit younger than her competition, but Nelson’s Ellie Ross didn’t let a lack of experience stop her defending her national golf croquet title last month. Ellie is the New Zealand golf croquet women’s champion for the second consecutive year having only started playing in 2016. Golf croquet is a faster and more simplistic version of the more tradional croquet. The 16-year-old first picked up a mallet two years ago after she broke her ankle while playing netball. While recovering, Ellie was seeking an outlet for her competitiveness when her maths teacher suggested golf croquet. The low intensity of the sport allowed her to play even in a cast. The Nelson College for Girls

student says it was love at first whack. “It’s quite amazing, you meet a whole different group of people, it is such a lovely sport that anyone can play.” At the tournament in Hawke’s Bay Ellie took on Dallas Cook of Bay of Plenty in the final. The young gun pipped her opponent in straight sets, 7-2, 7-5. She is now switching her focus to the U21 world’s in the United Kingdom in 2019. When asked what sets her apart she says it’s no secret, “just practice.” She says the sport has opened up a new world for her. It has allowed me to travel around the country meeting all sorts of different people Ellie says while there is a fantastic family-like bond within the club, “you can be competitive when you need to be.” The Nelson Club is now setting its sights on bringing the World Championships to the

city. “The main countries that play it are Egypt, Australia and New Zealand, so to have worlds here would help promote the sport not only in Nelson but New Zealand.” Ellie says while it is predominantly an older person’s sport, New Zealand has one of the youngest pools of players in the world. Her special season continued when she was named most improved player in the country at an awards ceremony in Wellington. Ellie says it was a very proud moment. “Seeing the names on the trophy of players that had won it before, some of them I have played with, so it’s very special.” She says she hopes to emulate some of their success and one day win a world title to add to her trophy case. “I would love to win worlds and help keep the sport alive.”

Rain washes out round two of TPL Peter Grigg All three TPL cricket fixtures were abandoned because of persistent rain on Saturday, with ACOB and the Marlborough Falcons both in strong positions to take the win. The third match-up, between the Marlborough Dolphins and WTTU at Victory Square, was more evenly balanced as the new opening batting combination of Joe O’Connor and Tom Ingham gave WTTU a rollicking start. Ingham bludgeoned two sixes and O’Connor one as the pair took the attack to the visitors’ new ball bowling attack. Josh Poole and spinner Jerrym Lamb took three wickets between them for the Dolphins to bring back the run rate and to create some sort of parity in the match before the weather intervened. Rain saved Wakatu from consecutive humiliating defeats at the weekend, the side producing its second impotent batting display in a row as ACOB were deprived of certain victory at Botanics. Nelson College also would have been happy with the respite as a result of the weather at Ngawhatu. Although they had recovered slightly thanks to twins Jonty and Finn Raxworthy, the schoolboys got off to a disastrous start. They lost their first five wickets for a paltry 14 runs.

The Central Stags’ opening one-day match of the season at Saxton Oval last week acted as a homecoming for a quartet of players. A pair of stalwarts and two young guns will again represent the region during the Stags Ford Trophy campaign, which sees Central return to Saxton Oval today to take on Northern Districts. Greg Hay has been recalled to the limited overs squad for the first time in four years, joining allrounder Josh Clarkson for his fourth season with the Stags. Debutantes Willem Ludick and Felix Murray also got the call up. This marks the first time in more than 20 seasons that the Stags has featured four Nelson representatives. Still only 21-years-old, Josh brings valuable experience to the squad while Willie and Felix both made their List A debuts last Wednesday against the Volts. Felix says it has been great to play with so many familiar faces.

"I am hoping to keep playing as far as I can, if the desire and passion is still there and at this stage it is, when you stop having that drive to train and get better that’s when you start to question it, but I am still loving it." Greg is coming off his most prolific season yet, having scored 786 runs at 60.46 from nine matches to finish as one of New Zealand's top two run scorers in the Plunket Shield last summer. Today’s match against the Knights is free admission for the Nelson public and gets underway at 11am.

Local tennis players rally against cancer Hundreds of players took to the court to rally for a cause as the Kelly Bowater Travel Rally Against Breast Cancer took place at eight clubs around the region last weekend. The event uses the Cardio Tennis programme to offer the Nelson Community an opportunity to appreciate the importance of exercise for health and well-being, to socialise and importantly, to raise funds for the

Breast Cancer Foundation NZ. Cardio Tennis is essentially a gym session on court with music; enjoyable and achievable for non-tennis players and tennis players alike. The weekend saw clubs from Golden Bay through to Wakapuaka run this valuable fundraiser for the third year in a row. Nelson Bays Tennis Association Regional Coordinator Ali

McQuillan says the fantastic weather really made the event a success with parents and their children taking part for the first time this year. “We are thrilled with the money we were able to raise for the Breast Cancer Foundation, it was a fantastic turnout.” Ali says Nelson Bays Tennis Association look forward to making this a firm event on their annual calendar.

School holidays have just finished and like every school holidays you have to find ways to entertain the kids. Fishing is always a great option but early spring is not the best time to catch lots of big snapper or kingfish in Nelson. However, the wonderful thing with kids is that they don’t necessarily need to catch lots of great big snapper to have fun. I find that our kids always find ways to entertain themselves if they are outdoors. Quite often it’s enough to tow a lure along the boulderbank or cast a bait from the shore off one of the wharfs along Rocks Rd. It took a painstaking 15-month selection process, but Nelson footballer Amelia Abbot has secured her seat to Uruguay for the U17 World Cup. “It was a long, nerve-wracking process as they gradually cut the team down, but it was such a relief when it was announced because it was just so much work, I got there in the end.” The 17-year-old had her selection spoiled by a Snapchat from teammate and former Nelson player, Hannah Mackay-Wright. “I saw the email but I decided not to open it till I got home, but when I opened Hannah’s Snapchat it just said congratulations, so I knew then.” Even after sharing the news with her ecstatic parents, Hannah says it still hasn’t quite sunk in. “I guess it will be real once I get on the plane.” Hannah’s selection is the realisation of a 12-year dream. The midfielder started her football career at ‘first kicks’ at Sax-

Natasha says the club will be looking at taking 16 skaters to the national championships in Palmerston North early next year. “Several of them will be medal hopes.” Among them is Nelson skating superstar Garth Jameson who comfortably claimed the men’s masters on Saturday. Garth is one of two Nelson speed skaters nominated for the Nelson Sports Awards next month.

Nelson made a stunning start to its speed skating season on Saturday. Dozens of skaters from Nelson and Blenheim took part in the Nelson Open at Saxton Stadium, racing in 800m, 1500m and 3000m events. Nelson speed skating coordinator Natasha Van Der Kallen says Nelson put on a near perfect performance at the open. “The open kicks off our home events and they have got on really well and took home a lot of medals.”

She says juniors Mikayla MacDonald, Holly Ward and Jamie Manson were particularly impressive. “They are young and just love the competitiveness and speed.” The open ran for the first time in 2017 and with numbers slightly up, Nelson coach Alan Bartlett says the sport is growing. “It is a real up and coming sport, even five-year-olds like to go fast.” Alan encourages anyone who is interested in taking up speed skating to pop along to the
