What a Labour weekend it was for Nelson art and sport lovers.

On Friday night the city hosted its biggest street party – the Masked Parade, followed by the carnival. Thousands turned out to take part or watch the annual spectacular, which is a part of the Nel-

son Arts Festival. But the parade was only the start, a jam-packed weekend of shows, as well as Art Expo Nelson, kept art-lovers more than satisfied.

Then the sport. Our Tasman Makos beat Taranaki on Sunday to make the Mitre 10 Cup final against Canterbury this weekend,

the team’s second final in three years. Tasman United also kicked off its Stirling Sports national league football campaign with a fantastic 2-2 draw with Canterbury United.

It’s certainly been a weekend to saviour and you can read all about it in today’s Nelson Weekly.

The new building, which needs to be up and running by 2019, will also be able to offer more outdoor space and gardens - something that has always been on the board’s wish-list.

Quad bike smashes into woman’s back yard

You have a choice

Brittany Spencer When Vanessa Evans got up on Friday morning, the last thing she expected to find was a quad bike stuck halfway through her back fence.

It had started out like any other morning but at around 10am, after jumping through the shower and getting dressed, Vanessa was surprised by police knocking on her door.

“I was just getting ready for the day and then all of a sudden I had police at my door asking, ‘do you mind if we have a quick look at your backyard and see what we can do about the bike through your fence?’”

Vanessa’s property backs onto the Murphy St Reserve and, since moving in a year an a half ago, quad bikes and dirt bikes have been tearing up the reserve track more and more frequently.

Much to some of her neighbours’ disgust, she says, a quad bike and several dirt bikes have been riding around the reserve 3-4 times a week for the past month at least.

“That morning I heard them racing around and when I was in the shower I heard some kind of bang, but I’d gotten used to hearing them up there and didn’t realise they’d hit my

Vanessa says one of her neighbours had seen the riders and reported them to the police who arrived to search for the bikes and their riders. “They must’ve seen the police, tried to evade them, then slid down the twenty metre bank and hit my fence, putting the wheel and handlebars through the posts.

Vanessa says she can definitely see the funny side to the event.

“The fact that they took the time to stack the wood whilst evading police and trying to break through my fence is hilarious.”

However, it’s not all laughter

for Vanessa, who is frustrated by the hours she spent tidying the property only to have it driven through, and is concerned about safety.

“Insurance will pay for the fence but in the meantime I look like a public gateway from the reserve to the street, hopefully no one decides to use it during the night.”

Police have told Vanessa that since the bike is not stolen property they couldn’t possess it, so for now its just sitting out in front of Vanessa’s house with a note saying the keys are at the police station.

Police have not found the rider responsible for the damage.

Housing trust to build homes in Stoke Jessie Johnston

Six “affordable” housing units are set to be built on a former state housing site in Stoke.

The Orchard St site previously held two-storey Housing New Zealand buildings, which were torn down around 18 months ago after being six years unoccupied.

Nelson Tasman Housing Trust purchased the land from Housing New Zealand and has just been granted resource consent for four one bedroom homes and two double bedroom houses.

Nelson Tasman Housing Trust chair Dave Johnston says the news has been welcomed.

“We had a meeting just around

the corner with some of the residents. At the time our plans hadn’t arrived, so we had packets of biscuits and cakes and we used them to show the residents what it would look like and they were all really excited about it.”

For what is a relatively small space, the trust has managed to make the most of the land avail-

able, including parking spaces for the new residents.

“From our point of view, we’d like to see this as the beginning of the regeneration of this whole area,” says trustee Doug McLearie.

“There’s very old houses on large blocks of land and, with this sort of development, you can make much better use of the land and

Masked Parade highlights another top arts festival From taniwha to astronauts, and butterflies to dragons, the streets of Nelson were swarming with people for the 21st annual Masked Parade on Friday.

Over 1500 people took part in the ‘Flights of Fancy’ parade while a large crowd flocked to the streets, watching schools, groups and individuals fly on by.

Among all the colour and creativity was Tasman School’s unique, pure white entry - ‘A Gondwana Dream’ – which won it both the school category and the Kim Merry Supreme Award.

The school was a stark contrast to all the multicoloured entries, and featured native creatures such as moa, tuatara and kiwi walking alongside a long white cloud feature - a nod to the country’s Maori name.

In the school category, Tasman was followed by Mahana School, while in the group category Electrix Cheerleading placed first, ahead of Girl Guides Nelson.

The Purple Lepidoptera won the individual category, with Dragon and Whelp as runner-up, and Waimea

Intermediate were given the highly-commended award.

Judge Elaine Ang from the Nelson Youth Council says, while Tasman stood out, judging this year’s Masked Parade wasn’t easy.

“It was a really hard decision, especially with so many awesome ideas, and you could see they had all put a lot of work into it,” she says.

Tasman School parent Saramea Waterman says the parade was “absolutely fantastic”.

“It was a great atmosphere.

The crowd was so responsive, and it was just such a fun

thing for the kids to be involved in,” she says.

“There is just so much creativity in Nelson, and it’s great to see it out here on the streets.”

Nelson Arts Festival team leader Axel de Maupeou says the event couldn’t have run any better, and he was impressed by the sophistication of all the costumes displayed.

“They were fantastic - the level of creativity and imagination displayed was absolutely mesmerizing, and almost all were made out of recycled materials,” he says.

The parade kicked off the last weekend of another successful Arts Festival, which officially finished yesterday.

Axel says that this year’s festival went very well, and the feedback they have received so far has been “overwhelmingly positive.”

“I think it just shows that we’re still able to engage new audiences, while still keeping our fellow supporters interested - it is a great achievement for us,” he says.

PROSSER’S POINT I very much share the frustration and disappointment of sufferers and care providers alike, at the lack of adequate resourcing for drug and alcohol services in this region.

Abuse of alcohol and other drugs in New Zealand is increasing and our regions are bearing the brunt of it, particularly where rehabilitation is either not available or at inadequate levels.

Our New Zealand First out-of-Parliament office in Nelson has been informed of several cases where families are struggling to receive help and rehabilitation. One person has gone to a centre in Australia as the waiting list here is too long, and in another case, a family member is facing an eight month wait to get into St Marks. This is not acceptable.

New Zealand First believes there should be sufficient services so that any person who needs them can access them. This government is failing in this area and increasingly our experience with constituents is indicative of a lack of investment in mental health and a lack of funding for drug and alcohol services.

New Zealand First will continue to highlight the inadequacies of government funding in this important area and push for families to be properly supported.

nelson L ve Cyclist in hospital after Haven Rd incident: A man came off his bike after hitting two pieces of concrete lying on the road beside the Truck Stop on Haven Rd last Friday. He was taken to hospital where a spokesperson says he is in a stable condition.

Police believe the concrete came from a ute or vehicle with a trailer and would like to hear from anyone who saw a vehicle in the area with a load of concrete on the back earlier that morning.

Large rock smashes through windscreen: A large rock was smashed through the windscreen of a silver Nissan Bluebird parked along The Ridgeway last week.

The identity of the person/s who allegedly put the rock through the windscreen is unknown, however the car owner is offering a $100 reward for the name of the guilty party.

Expo 'fantastic opportunity' for artists ing in reserve, Kylie sold one of her works in the first day of this year's Expo, which attracted artists from all over the country.

"It's a fantastic opportunity to talk to the other artists. There's a really good vibe about it and the diversity of the work is inspirational."

"We had lots of people from out of town attending and there were many significant sales," he says.

Nelson's Kylie Conning can claim to be unique among the 150 artists exhibiting their work at Art Expo Nelson at Saxton Stadium on the weekend.

And it's not just because Kylie's favoured media are the everyday ballpoint pen and ink. The thing that makes her really different is that she creates many of her edgy art works sitting in the front seat of the taxi she drives for her day job as she dreams of becoming a full-time artist.

"I drive a taxi, so I started drawing with ballpoint to fill in time while I was waiting for my next passenger," Kylie says. "Then I did an art class at Impressions and that really inspired me and got me right into it.

"I always have a clipboard and pen and paper in my taxi and I still do a lot sitting in the front seat. I've also started drawing at home so now I have two studios.

"I love faces so I mostly do portraits. I draw birds and other animals too, but that's just come out of experimenting."

Kylie, who has only been drawing for three years, was exhibiting at her second Art Expo Nelson after attending for the first time last year. With 22 drawings in total, some on display and some wait-

A Nelson woman was horrified to find two weka caught in illegal leg-hold traps in Hira last Monday.

Pip Collins and her friend were riding their horses down Rayners Rd when they found the weka, which were tangled in grass about half a metre from the road.

“Initially we thought they were stuck in the grass, but then we realised they were stuck in traps,” says Pip, who is a huge animal lover.

Both weka had broken legs, and were in a great deal of distress.

“We took them back to the farm where I keep my horse, and after seeing the state of the birds we decided that it would be much more humane to put them out of their misery,” adds Pip. “It was very sad and traumatic for everyone involved and we were very angry and

Pip has reported the incident to Ministry for Primary Industries, who are already investigating it – although she says it will be hard to find out who was responsible for setting the traps.

The Department of Conservation has also been alerted, who say the penalties for injuring or killing a protected species are “quite serious.”

DOC's Paul Thornton says they are “very concerned” about the injury to the weka, which is the first such incident they have experienced in the region.

However, he says that the protected birds are becom-

ing more common around the city so it’s inevitable that they will start getting more issues with them.

“It may be that the people who set the traps were attempting to get possums, without realising that they need to have a particular type of device that is either affixed or raised above ground level so that ground birds cannot step on them.”

He says that trappers needed to follow guidelines laid out by the Department of Conservation.

They recommend that traps are set at least 700mm above the ground to prevent native birds being caught.

Penalties for breaching guidelines are fines, which range from $100,000 to $200,000. Paul says that if they get any information on who may have set the trap that caught the weka then they would definitely investigate.

Waimea Weekly publisher Steve Page gets the Shop 'n' Win entry boxes ready.

Simon Bloomberg Christmas will come early again this year for one lucky Richmond shopper, thanks to the Waimea Weekly's Shop 'n' Win competition which starts on Thursday.

Taking art to the public Kate Russell Four Nelson artists have just put down their paint brushes after an impressive ten day, live art display at Founders Heritage Park.

The Billboard Project was part of the Nelson Arts Festival and saw artists Geoff Noble, Miriam Hansen, Simon Hunter and Mark Fa’avae create largescale works of art on the grass outside The Granary.

The project was launched at last year’s festival, and made a comeback this year due to its popularity.

This year’s artists were given the theme Maungārongo – which means abiding peace

– and is centred on the 30 year anniversary of New Zealand being nuclear free.

Geoff Noble says that it’s been a great experience and, although each artist is conveying the same theme, the billboards have ended up all very different pieces.

“Mine is all about abiding peace and how being nuclear free is our choice and it’s up to us to keep it that way, while Mark Fa’avae’s work relates to peace and is represented with a dove.”

Simon Hunter’s work makes reference to his heritage in Taranaki by using topographical maps overlaid with a large albatross feather,

Geoff says they managed to attract quite a crowd during their time at Founders, with people coming back on a daily basis to check out the progress until they finished on Thursday night.

“One of the ideas of the project is connecting artists with the community, which I think we’ve really nailed,” he says.

The paintings are now being exhibited at Nelson City Framers on Halifax St and will be sold via silent auction over this week – anyone interested can go to the gallery and put their price down.

As a frequent user of that intersection it needs a roundabout with a bypass and merge lane for south bound traffic, similar to the Whakatu Drive/Quarantine Road setup. Nelson's young professionals are racing to sign up for the group's marquee event -- the Jens Hansen Ball.

This year the theme is a day at the races, with ball-goers encouraged to dress up to the nines.

Nelson Young Professionals host the ball each spring and its president Michael Younghusband says it's a great opportunity to enjoy a night of entertainment.

Nelson Young Professionals act as a networking group for people in the first 15 years of their career.

Many of its members are people who have secured a job in Nelson, but may not know too many people here.

Michael says the annual ball is always a highlight.

"It's a lot of fun."

The ball usually attracts around 120 people but Michael says this year it's capped at 100.

Jens Hansen have also donated two top of the south rings, which will be given away as spot prizes. The night includes free buses from various Nelson

locations to the Playhouse and back home again at the end of the night, a three course meal and live band to get the dance floor going.

The Jens Hansen Nelson Young Professional ball is being held on Saturday, October 29 at the Playhouse. Tickets are $120 each and can be purchased from the Nelson Young Professionals website, www.nyp. co.nz.

Fight 4 Victory 3 is on at the Trafalgar Centre on November 5. Our very own Give it a Go Girl Brittany Spencer hopped in the ring with former contestant Emma "The Riddler" Riddell to see if she could match it with the best.

Spoiler alert -- she couldn't.

My sanity was definitely in question as we drove up to Victory Boxing.

Who in their right mind would spar against 2015 Fight 4 Victory's Emma "The Riddler" Riddell, with absolutely no experience?

Oh wait, that’s right, me.

After a quick how-to, it was time.

In the far corner and standing at what seemed like seven feet, the lethal lawyer had some postcourt aggression to work off, in my corner there was nothing but a barely-five-foot-me, giggling nervously and shaking in my sneakers.

We were given the signal and if I’m being perfectly honest, my hands were sweating before we bumped gloves.

They say the most basic rules of boxing are to keep your chin down and gloves up, I didn’t need a knock to the head to forget that within the first few moments.

I was even more determined but if I was going to land a hit it had to be now.

Jab, jab, hook, I was out for blood but I would have been happy to slip under her defences just once.

And then it happened.

My glove connected with The Riddler’s nose, and I had a moment of king-of-the-mountain glory.

But in typical Brittany fashion, I was so stunned I'd hit her that I forgot we were sparring and apologised repetitively, shattering my nonexistent boxing cred.

I put everything I had into that last bit but I couldn’t help thinking it was the longest 90 seconds of my life.

It wasn’t until later that the guys sheepishly admitted to stretching each round out to two minutes.

For the last fifteen seconds, I went full attack, my gloves were down, my chin was up but I was gunning for it.

When that final signal came, my arms dropped and hung at my side, my chin finally went down from fatigue rather than technique and the urge to lie down on the canvas had never been so strong.

Inevitably, Emma easily took it out but that didn’t matter, I got a look at her red nose and that was all I needed, I was chuffed.

Starting off in a high chair in her father’s kitchen, Clare has worked her way up through all aspects of hospitality and says it’s this diverse experience in the industry that saw her achieve the position of president within the association.

Jacob Page Tasman United coach Richard Anderson believes his team needed a spark and Alex Ridsdale provided it with a 25-yard strike during the team's 2-2 Stirling Sports Premiership draw with Canterbury United on Sunday afternoon.

Pine Industries Tasman United had dominated the first 40 minutes but found themselves a goal behind thanks to a scrappy goal from Andre de Jong in the 41st minute.

"I thought we played well and controlled the play up until

then," Richard says. "We needed something special and Alex provided it with a strike that showed real confidence.

Tasman trailed again after they conceded a penalty in the 68th minute but Paul Ifill cancelled that out with a well taken penalty of his own in the 81st minute.

"I think we showed plenty of courage to come back like we did.

"To get this result against the team that finished fourth last year will give us a lot of confidence for our game against Auckland [this week]," Richard says.

Marty Banks, broken hand and all, helped the Tasman Makos exorcise one demon with their 41-29 Mitre 10 Cup semi-final win, now they will look to do what many have believed impossible all season.

By avenging their 2014 final loss to Taranaki on Sunday afternoon, Tasman set up a date with Canterbury who have won the title seven of the last eight years and are the current Ranfurly Shield holders.

The two teams have played in Christchurch already this season, with Canterbury winning 45-14.

However, the Makos will gain confidence from their semi-final win, which was set-up by two late tries in first half to give them a 24-12 halftime lead.

Nelson rider Henry Jaine managed to do what some of the world's best cyclists failed to do this year when he edged out George Bennett in a desperate finish to the NBS Milk and Honey race on Sunday.

And Henry broke his own race record in the process, completing the road cycle from Takaka to the top of the Takaka Hill, and technical mountainbike down the Rameka Track back to Takaka, in just 2hr 33min 40sec.

George, who was predictably first to the top of the Takaka Hill and led to the bottom of the Rameka, slipped off the pace in the final kilometre to finish in 2hr 34min 47sec, with top junior Cameron Jones third in 2 hr 41min.

Henry's win was based on superior mountainbike skills through the Rameka, where George rode conservatively to ensure he got through the rocky trail unscathed.

However, Henry admitted he was concerned he may have dropped too far off the pace during the tough climb up the Takaka Hill.

"I don't know if I'm not fit enough yet or I was just having

"I was fourth or fifth to the top and then I just started picking off the leaders. I caught George at the bottom of the Rameka and from then on it was always going to come down to a sprint."

George admitted the race was a lot tougher than he expected with the change from a road bike to mountainbike proving challenging.

"It was hard. I even got cramp - I haven't had cramp for 10 years."

Wellington's Sasha Smith won the women's race riding the entire course on a mountainbike in 3hr 38 min 24 sec. Alison Mander was second in 3 hr 48 min with Mel Chick third in 4 hr 5 min. Niamh Fisher-Black won the Queen of the Mountain.

Patrick Higgins rode a mountainbike the whole way to win the men's Treadly race ahead of Ollie Whalley with Jace Christie third.

Recent ant observations in Nelson have revealed the presence of Argentine ants in large numbers in certain areas. With summer on its way, it is time to start planning what methods to use to control argentine ants. In past years there was really only one option and that was to use bait.

If not applied correctly, and if neighbours did not treat at the same time, then control was not of the expected levels for the price paid for the product.

The last two seasons have seen the use of a now tried-and-proven method of getting long-term control of argentine ants for a reasonable outlay by the householder. The X-IT Ant™ programme relies on the use of at least two, possibly three, different products to achieve ant control.

To get the best result from your X-It Ant application your sprayer must have no spray residue from the previous use of insecticides (e.g.

Kalani Sheridan wins Nayland's top sport award Jacob Page Long distance runner Kalani Sheridan has been named Nayland College’s Howat Cup winner for best overall sportsperson Kalani’s achievements both on the track and in the cross country ranks has many considering him a rising star in New Zealand’s running elite.

Kalani won a bronze medal in the 3000m at the 2015 New Zealand Secondary Schools Athletics Championships in Timaru, and then broke the Boys-16 3000m record at the 2016 Tasman Secondary Schools Athletics Championships.

He also finished fifth in the 1500m and 3000m at the New Zealand Track and Field Championships in Dunedin.

He finished eighth in the senior division at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Cross Country Championships in Rotorua and dominated the male-18 six kilometre race at the Tasman Cross Country Championships.

Kalani took the lead with

600m left in New Zealand Cross Country Championships Men’s U18 6km race in the Auckland Domain only to lose out in the final straight.

He held on easily for the silver medal.

He gained selection into the New Zealand Cross Country team that competed in the Australian Cross Country Championships, finishing in ninth place. Kalani is now training for the New Zealand Secondary Schools Athletics Championships in Auckland in December.

Tayler Boeyen was awarded the Monica Robinson Cup for best all-round sportswoman after she captained the Nayland senior A netball team, was part of the senior A volleyball team which finish sixth in the South Island and 26th in New Zealand at secondary school level.

She also competed in the New Zealand Secondary School Athletics Championships,finishing 10th in the discus, 14th in triple jump and 19th in long jump.

Bailey Cotton was awarded the D’Arcy Cup for best all-

round sportsman for his efforts in badminton, rugby and athletics. He was voted the most dedicated player for the Waimea Old Boys Under-18 team and captained the Nayland sevens team.

Impressive results at the South Island Secondary Schools Championships saw Bailey win both the under-18 100m and 200m titles.

His best achievement in Athletics came at the New Zealand Track and Field Championships where Bailey finished third in the under-18 Mens 200m and fifth in the 100m.

Kalani, Connor Reilly (bowls), Emma Bateup (mountain biking), Tayla and Connor Nesbitt (table tennis) were all given Tasman Secondary School Sports Awards while Taylah Kirker was given a service to sport award for her commitment to sport at Nayland and the Tasman region.

Talented rugby and basketball player Joseph Meleisea was named top junior sportsman, while the all-round talents of Ella Holmes saw her named the top junior sportswoman.

Nelson Giants coach Tim Fanning is spanning the globe in an effort to benefit the NBL franchise next year.

Since the Giants season ended in April, the 32-year-old Oakland, California, native has been to Las Vegas for an NBA Showcase camp for free agent players, attended the Philadelphia 76ers NBA training camp, spent time in Madrid, and is currently “watching as much basketball as possible” while in Israel working with Maccabi Tel Aviv.

“I’m trying to make use of not having a partner or kids and see as much basketball, and learn as much as I can, while I’m young.”

Phill is helping behind the scenes in the lead-up to the season but has hinted at wanting to keep a low profile and enjoy time with his family. “Given the amount of experience Phill has, I’d be silly not to at least have him available for advice throughout the season,” Tim says. “I’m keen to come back and do the best I can for the Giants.”
