“I was shocked,” says Murray. “I couldn’t believe how well it went. I had people like Paul Brockie [of Absolute Energy] come racing in, saying, ‘listen, all the walls and ceiling insulation you need I’ll give ya, see ya later’. It was incredible.”

In his original post, Murray called the situation a “heart breaker”.

“There is a wee girl who has suffered hugely over her 14 years – and her, and her family are really up against it. Intellectually and emotionally she is just your average teenager – but can’t do the things a “normal”, healthy teen would do.”

The club planned to post the security camera images on Facebook of those who had failed to come forward, as well as giving them an eight-week ban. The club says that they are now confident that the remaining riders have owned up, although the forestry company is still making sure all are accounted for, the riders only receiving a four-week ban.

Stoke senior to shave 65cm of hair, Tuesday, October 11: Jai Henderson, the spunky Stoke senior who decided to shave her 65cm long hair for cancer says donations are flooding in.

Simon Bloomberg Plans to improve the safety of a dangerous intersection at the entrance to Wakatu Estate in Stoke are being finalised this week and will feature a stop sign, turning lanes and traffic islands to guide traffic flow.

Last year, the Nelson City Council implemented a temporary speed reduction outside Wakatu Estate, four months after a series of nasty accidents at the intersection of Main Rd Stoke and Elm St. Council promised that “operational changes and on-the-ground road markings will be undertaken to make the intersection safer” and this week revealed it was meeting with contractors to discuss the planned changes.

A council spokesperson says the new layout will include a stop sign at the exit from Elm St and a left-turning lane from Main Rd Stoke into Elm St. There will also be off-on ramps for cyclists to enable them to use the off-road path outside the entrance to Wakatu Estate and new traffic islands to guide traffic flow.

A three-car collision outside Wakatu Estate last year was one of a series of serious accidents that has prompted a change in the road’s layout. tersection on his way to work, is relieved the road layout is going to be changed. “We had another crash there this week. Reducing the speed limit is helping but all it really means is that the impacts are at a slower speed.”

Workers in Wakatu Estate are

relieved at council’s plans to change the layout, although Gary Walton says it should have happened sooner.

“Somebody’s going to get killed there unless they fix it,” Gary, who works at Freeman Roofing, says. “The lower speed limit has done nothing to improve it, the hazard is still there.”

Dave Johnson says the only benefit of lowering the speed limit has been to reduce the speed of any collisions. Dave, who works at O2B Healthy, says the only way to improve the safety of the intersection is to change the road layout.

Nelson City Council couldn’t put a time-line on the changes until it had discussed the project with contractors, which it was doing this week.

While most people were at work last Thursday, a handful of lucky beach-goers made the most of a close encounter with a pod of orcas.

The pod was made up of 5-6 killer whales, including one calf. The orcas made their way along Rocks Rd towards Tahunanui, beside the beach, down the blind channel and continued in the direction of Rabbit Island.

Tom Morris was about to go for a run when he saw the pod.

“They must have been training the little calf because the mother threw it up in the air

Paddleboarder Lyndon Chandler says he was able to follow them. “There was a mother and calf swimming really close to the road, two others hunting together and at least one further out in the bay that I could see,” he says. “I busted my butt to catch up to them up… it’s an amazing experience, you don’t feel unsafe at all, you’re just wondering where they are and when you can get the next best shot of them.”

Internet solves theft within hours Kate Russell Reporter

When a St John Ambulance donation box was stolen from the counter of Stoke’s Pestell’s Rai Bacon Company last week, worker Rachael Stott decided to turn to social media in an attempt to ‘name and shame’ the thieves.

And it worked.

Within two hours of sending security camera footage to a popular Facebook page that shares information about crime in Nelson, known as Nelson Snippets, Rachael had the names and addresses of the culprits.

The administrator of the Nelson Snippets page says that the response was “phenomenal”, with the post being shared 2.4k times and has reached 168,708 people since Wednesday night.

It is just one example of an increasing number of Nelson businesses and individuals turning to social media to take the law into their own hands for fast, effective results.

However, Nelson Police, who were alerted to the theft the same day and have now been passed on the names revealed through the page, are advising people to exercise caution when appealing for

“Social media gets results, and it is growing up,” they told Nelson Weekly.

“If people know they are likely to end up on here and be identified, hopefully they will think twice.”

While Pestell’s say that, although they won’t get the money back, they have had some very generous customers giving them donations to replenish the box.

“One lady has given us a $20 donation to start filling the box back up, as she saw what had happened through the Nelson Snippets post,” says Rachael.

“I’m just amazed at the outreach it’s had - people seem to get more accomplished through social media, now I just hope the cops take it seriously.”

Pestell’s owner, Chris Pestell, says he is “gobsmacked” with the result.

“It’s caused quite a little buzz around the place,” he says.

“Nearly every customer has asked us – ‘have you got your box back yet?’ – Which just shows how many people the Facebook post reached. Social media is a pretty powerful thing.”

Wanted Nelson man writes to police on Facebook: Cyrus James Harrington, the Motueka man wanted by local police, has contacted them on social media. Police had grave concerns for the safety of the 26-year-old and posted on Facebook hoping for information on his whereabouts. Cyrus replied, “I'm safe everyone. Tahunanui gets new building for community centre Andrew Board Tahunanui’s Community Centre will double in size at the end of the month when it takes possession of the former Pacific Island Afternoon Study building on Muritai St. The move will be celebrated with a special one-day event on October 30, but the manager of the centre, Judy Robinson, says the significance for the region will last for years.

“This is the biggest thing to happen to this centre for a long time.”

The centre currently operates out of a building beside Burrell Park but it also houses an early childhood education centre. The success of that centre means there is very little space for other activities. By adding the new hall to the centre it means they will be able to host yoga and pilates, youth groups, a drop-in centre, card games for older folk, a seed library, health services and cooking groups – activities community centres traditionally host.

But it almost didn’t happen.

The building is on council land but was originally owned by St John, it was then bought by the Nelson Pacific Island Afternoon Study Programme Incorporated, ran by Jan and Phil Fa’avae. For

Activities began to wind down several years ago and Judy says she began to hold discussions with the trust about taking over the building. “They were going really well, and then Jan suddenly died and things went on hold for a while.”

then the building was deemed a risk in the event of an earthquake so the council renegotiated the price and work had to be done to strengthen it.

Judy admits that for a while there she doubted they would ever get it.

“To be honest I was giving up then, I thought it just wasn’t going to happen. We’d run programmes here to us at huge cost because we just didn’t have the space. We

lost staff because it looked like we were going nowhere.”

But then, suddenly, it did happen. “[Deputy mayor] Paul Matheson, really, he’s been pushing it along and now we’re here and I can’t believe it.”

Since the keys were handed to the centre last month volunteers have been lending a hand to paint, landscape and fit out the hall.

Judy says, ultimately, they’d like to open a small health suite so locals can have BeWell checks and other services.

“Tahuna needs this. It needs somewhere for families. Just in the past five years the families coming to us are quite different.

We’re not seeing working parents drop off their kids. The families are more needy and that’s the good thing about us being a community centre, not just an early childhood centre,” says Judy.

“Some are estranged from their families so they don’t have that support and others are struggling with income and lack of skills.

We are now better equipped to help these people.”

The celebration event to coincide with the opening of the centre's new building will be from 12pm on Saturday, October 30, at the centre on Muritai St.

She’s only year nine, but student Eva Lloyd is definitely one to watch after last week's Cawthron Science and Technology Fair Awards.

The Nelson College for Girls student took out four awards including one of the highest awards of the night, the Des Duthie Technology Award.

Eva’s project, ‘A Handy Solution’, found a way to power bike lights using body heat.

The 13-year-old placed electricty-harnessing peltier tiles onto aluminium handlebars.

When gripped, a rider's body heat warms up one side of the tiles while airflow and the aluminium bar cools down the other side, this heat transfer generates electricity which Eva wired to illuminate a 3 volt LED bike light.

An avid biker, Eva says she was inspired to create the handlebars after constantly dealing with batteries and hearing about too many accidents involving people cycling around the city without lights at night.

Eva says she knew nothing about peltier tiles or how to wire a circuit when she started, but got the concept after reading an article about a girl who had made a hand-held torch using the tiles. “I was talking to my science teacher and an electrician about the tiles and no one had heard of them, so it was quite a cool experience discovering what the tiles can do.

“My biggest challenge was creating a big enough temperature difference to create the amount of voltage I needed for the light, but I managed to do that by using aluminium and adding more tiles.”

This year’s Cawthron Science and Technology Fair saw over 70 students enter. The projects were judged by 68 judges and Cawthron’s Christina Armstrong says this year’s fair celebrated some incredible young talent, with both the supreme science and technology awards going to year nine and ten students. Whangamoas fly-tip still not cleaned

Kate Russell A roadside rubbish dump on the crest of the Whangamoas is finally set to be cleaned up this summer.

Nelson Weekly first reported the mounting fly tip back in July, when a local resident found gutted pigs, old fridges, car parts, tyres, old carpet, as well as household rubbish bags and green waste, stretching 30 metres along the cliff edge.

The problem was reported to NZTA, who are responsible for keeping the highway free of rubbish - but it was then discovered the area is a scenic reserve and therefore administered by the Department of Conservation.

DOC Motueka acting operations manager Paul Thornton says they are “fully aware” of the problem and have removal of the tipped materials scheduled for the next few weeks when they get their summer season staff.

“In doing this, we need to take care to keep everyone safe given the unpleasant and potentially dangerous materials that are there and the very steep slope,” he says.

Paul also says they will be working with NZTA to find a long-term solution to the problem and they have a number of options that they are currently assessing.

“Otherwise it will happen again and we will be caught in a cycle of removing the rubbish and disposing of it properly without addressing the cause of the problem,” he says.

“Whilst it is correct to say that the place where the tipping is taking place is on public conservation land, the access to the place where this is taking place is shared between the Department and NZTA, and any solution would need to be a joint effort.”

Kate Fulton has officially beaten Trudie Brand by 61 votes to claim the final spot around the Nelson City Council table.

The final election results were released Friday morning and confirmed that Fulton, already a two-term councillor, was re-elected over Brand by 6719 votes to 6658.

Boxing helps girls' fitness and confidence Andrew Board In amongst the hustle and bustle that surrounds Victory Boxing, a group of girls from schools around Nelson get together every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon to skip, run and box their way to higher confidence and better health.

Trainer Sharon Tarapipipi has been working with the girls since the Victory Boxing Charitable Trust opened its doors three years ago. She says girls that attend grow in confidence, self-assurance and develop a bond with the place and each other.

“For some, they come here be-

cause there's issues at school with bullying and that kind of thing, just to give them confidence. For others, it’s all about fitness.”

Victory Boxing Charitable Trust was founded in 2013 to help local kids get fit and develop respect.

Since then it has grown to include classes six days a week from its Vanguard St gym, with various ages and abilities. The third edition of its major fundraiser, Fight4Victory, is being held on November 5. Money raised from the Fight4Victory event goes directly to helping run the youth classes at the gym.

The girls' class is one that has been a constant since the gym

was founded. Over the years, Sharon has seen dozens of girls come and go but says the comradery amongst them has remained a the same.

“Because we have such a big age range, from 8 to 18, we have the older girls, who have been here for a lot longer, role model for the younger girls. They step up and see who needs a hand or who needs some positive words of encouragement and they deliver it, even without us having to say anything. I think they really enjoy being looked up to and I think those younger girls enjoy having role models too.”

Ten-year-old Penelope Taulafo,

of Birchwood School, has been coming along to Victory Boxing for three years and says wanted to get more confident and fitter. She says she loves her boxing sessions at the gym and feels much better than when she started. “I felt like I wasn’t doing enough [to stay fit]. But also confidence, because I wasn’t really confident around people, but now I am. I felt more shy when I wasn’t doing this.”

Lily-Belle Gifkins, 13, is another who’s seen the benefit of boxing.

The Nelson College for Girls student says she’s been coming since the start of the school year and loves it. “I enjoy it a lot. Meeting new people and getting fit. I en-

joyed it right from the start.”

Sharon says the impact on some of the girls is immense. “We get letters and cards and some of the messages inside those cards are pretty powerful. You don’t know what people are bringing in with them, you can see in some of them but you don’t always know what they carry with them during the day. But after a session you do see them walk out a little taller, those endorphins have kicked in and they take that away, and hopefully it helps them through the next few days.”

Andrew Board A thousand shoeboxes filled with Christmas treats by Nelsonians will be shipped to needy Pacific Island communities over the next month, and one of the region’s largest businesses is right behind it.

The project is run by international charity Samaritan’s Purse and sees people all over the world fill an empty shoebox with items ranging from clothes to toys, school equipment, a hairbrush and “something special” before they are delivered to children in need for Christmas.

This is the second year running that Port Nelson has taken part in the effort by encouraging its staff to fill a shoebox.

Port Nelson’s Andy Farmer says he first heard of the charity through his child’s preschool in Richmond. He took it to management at Port Nelson who

agreed to pay the $9 shipping charge for each box filled by a Port Nelson staff member.

Last year 55 boxes came back, this year it’s 90.

“I’m rapt, I think a lot more people were aware of what it was this year so we had a really good number of people take it up. I think people like that it’s easy to do, tangible and that it goes to kids,” he says.

The programme is run in Nelson through the Richmond Baptist Church. Its children’s pastor Wendy Milson says Port Nelson is by far the largest single supplier of full boxes. She expects between 900 and 1000 boxes to come from the Nelson and Tasman area.

“The big push is to give these children something to hang on to and to treasure. You see the videos and the smiles on their faces and they’re so delighted to get something that’s actually theirs.

Because some of them have nothing, they are allocated so it isn’t a free-for-all.”

She says the filled shoeboxes from Nelson have been handed out in Fiji over the past two years.

Andy says the charity is a good chance to get kids involved. “It seems like a nice thing to do, people get into it and it’s an easy thing to do. Whatever you put in that box you know is going to end up in a kid's lap as a Christmas gift.

Harbourmaster hosts regatta Nelson’s water-based clubs came together on Saturday for the Harbourmasters Regatta, a day of challenges, camaraderie and spectacular weather.

The Harbourmasters were joined by the Iron Duke Sea Scouts, Nelson Rowing Club, the Whakatu Marae Waka Ama, Maitahi Outrigger Canoe Club and the Tasman Bay Kayak Racing Club, for several races in the inaugural regatta.

Pride was on the line as the final event pitted the Tasman District Council and Tasman Harbourmaster against Nelson City Coun-

cil and Nelson Harbourmasters.

In a questionable last minute course redirection by Nelson Harbourmaster Dave Duncan, he took line honours.

Best individual went to kayaker Lisa Morrison, best group went to the Iron Duke Sea Scouts and the Broken Oar was awarded to Tasman Harbourmaster Dan Cairney for bringing up the rear multiple times. Lisa, who won best individual, said she'll be back next year. “It’s so cool to see all the clubs come together, the races were really fun and intense."

Art expo to feature 150 artists Kate Russell

Saxton Stadium is getting ready for an influx of art lovers, with the fifth annual Art Expo Nelson opening its doors to the public this weekend.

The three-day expo will feature 150 artists from all around New Zealand exhibiting and selling artworks, and event organiser Nic Foster says that more than half the artists are from out of town, which will make for an exciting experience for visitors. “These are artists whose works we haven’t seen here before and perhaps not again for another year, and we’ve also got some very talented local artists” he says.

“Like previous years, we expect to see lots of people over the weekend enjoying the art, meeting the artists and staying for a few hours to really soak up the atmosphere.”

He says that every day will be different, as artists replace the work that they have sold with something different.

Roding Reserve Forest harvest Forestry harvesting work is starting in the Roding Reserve, at the end of Aniseed Valley, and will be underway until April next year.

For safety reasons, the Roding Reserve will be closed from Monday to Friday while the area is being harvested. Access will be permitted on weekends only. Local elections official result Haven Precinct Development – public session invitation Thursday 27 October from 5.30pm at the Trafalgar Pavilion (Trafalgar Park).

Anyone interested in hearing more about, and sharing their ideas on, the potential development of the Haven Precinct, is invited to come along to this public session.

In the 2016/17 Annual Plan deliberations in June it is was resolved that Council officers investigate and provide early concept plans for the Haven Precinct.

Council noted the enthusiasm for the project from many submitters at the time and wants to offer people an opportunity to share their ideas at this early stage in preparing the concept plans.

Land owners, groups with a specific interest and iwi are also involved in early discussions in order to get a clearer picture of what the community wants and what might be achievable on this site.

The Nelson Arts Festival is well underway but there are plenty of shows still to go before it finishes next Monday. The Stage One youth performances (until Friday 21 October, 11am – 2pm, 1903 Square) offer free lunchtime entertainment. Pic’s Granary Gigs are still going strong – with free blues, acoustic and DJ gigs over the next few days.

That’s when you can put your mixed recycling wheelie bin (paper, plastic, cardboard and cans) out for its first collection. Glass still goes in the blue crate and it goes out on the same day too. Make sure it’s all out by 7am as collection is starting earlier.

Safer Boating Week Oct 14 – 21 Safer Boating Week is the week before Labour Day weekend, the traditional start of recreational boating in much of the country.

The aim is to encourage boaties to take simple steps before getting back on the water: Prep your boat, check your gear, know the rules.

• Prep – service the engine, check and change the fuel, check the battery and just generally give the boat a good onceover.

• Check – make sure your lifejackets are still fit for purpose and you have enough. Service any inflatable lifejackets and ensure you have two reliable forms of communication equipment.

• Know – ensure you know the “rules of the road” on the water, and check your local bylaws to make sure you understand what the requirements are in your area.

Lifejackets save lives As part of Safer Boating Week, Maritime NZ and Nelson City Council (along with other regional councils) have announced they will be trialling a “no excuses” policy for recreational boaties not carrying or wearing lifejackets and those who speed on the water. The five knot speed limit when near the shore, swimmers, divers and other boats, will be enforced as unsafe speeds, along with not carrying or wearing lifejackets, are two of the biggest risks of death and injury.

Boaties who break Council’s lifejacket and speed rules will be given infringement notices of up to $200.

The “no excuses” trial will be run for about five days, at different times during summer. After summer, the trial will be reviewed and decisions made about whether it will be extended in future.

Footbridge repair starts soon Repair work on the footbridge from the Woodstock Reserve over Covent Drive in Stoke will be getting underway soon and is on target to be completed by the end of the year.

The bridge was damaged when a truck struck it in 2015 and has been unusable since. Council has now reached agreement with the insurers of the parties involved which has allowed the repairs to begin.

After this lengthy process, residents can look forward to having the bridge back in working order soon.

Kids prepare for masked parade Kate Russell

The iconic Masked Parade is set to take flight on the streets of central Nelson this Friday, as the popular community event kicks of Labour Weekend in the city.

This year’s theme is “Flights of Fancy”, and St Joseph’s School pupils have been busy making their masks, which include praying mantis, yel-

low-eyed penguins, aliens and bees.

They are just one of many schools, early childhood centres, groups and individuals participating this year, with a range of prizes up for grabs.

Powerlifters find strength in each other Jacob Page

If Nelson powerlifters Michelle Welsh and Lindsay McGavin bring home medals from the Asia/Oceania Championships in December, in Christchurch, they only need to look at each other for the reason why.

The dynamic duo have trained together and pushed each other to New Zealand selection for the past 18 months under the watchful eye of coach Jason Hylkema.

It is the second time Michelle will compete at the event, having competed in Vancouver last October, while Lindsay’s 18-month powerlifting journey sees him debut in black for the first time.

Jason, who has an Olympic weightlifting background, will be a New Zealand assistant coach at the event.

Michelle will be competing in the under-84kg category, while Lindsay will be taking part in the under-93kg.

Powerlifting involves three lifts, squat, bench and a dead lift, with all three combined to give an overall total.

Michelle wants to have a perfect nine-from-nine lifts and wants to go higher than her personal best of 377.5kg.

Lindsay is eager to beat his national Masters 2 record of 512.5kg.

Jason says he was confident both could exceed those marks with the right attitude.

“On the day, you’ve done all the hard work so it’s 90 per cent mental,” Jason says.

Michelle says having Lindsay as a training partner for 18 months had been a boost.

“Having Lindsay as a training partner has given me added motivation and I can safely say I’ve achieved far better results because I’ve been training alongside him.

“It’s been great to have someone who has the same goals as me and wants to push as hard as I do.”

Lindsay, who has been an active person all his life, found powerlifting while doing cross-fit and I was really enjoying the lifting side of it, but the cardio, not so much.

Lindsay then trained for a regional South Island event in Nelson. “I’ve had a really good preparation and I’ve really enjoyed the whole thing, even at 59, it’s been fun to test my ability to pick up something new.”

The Asia/Oceania Championships run from December 4 to December 11.

Makos to renew Taranaki rivalry for rugby playoffs Jacob Page The Tasman Makos booked a semi-final spot in the Mitre 10 Cup against Taranaki this weekend after making mustwin rugby look easy with a 56-0 win over Southland on Sunday.

Leon MacDonald’s team will travel to New Plymouth for the match after finishing third in the regular season.

The way they finished, with an eight try romp in the sunshine at Nelson’s Trafalgar Park, will

give them plenty of confidence.

After Counties Manukau defeated front-runners Canterbury, the Makos had to win against men from the deep south, but when loose forward Pete Samu crossed for an early try built on forward domination, there was little doubt as to which team was going to win.

The victory also continues Tasman’s rise in the provincial ranks.

Three years in the top flight for a finals appearance and two

semi-final efforts.

Tasman lost the 2014 final to Taranaki but got the better of the amber and blacks when they played in Nelson earlier this season.

Tasman and Taranaki will meet on Sunday with kick off at 4.35pm.

The winner will face either Canterbury or Counties Manukau, who meet in Christchurch.

Tasman could earn a home final if Counties beat the Ranfurly Shield holders.

Nelson Cricket coach Aldin Smith is taking the positives away from a challenging Chapple Cup campaign in Napier where the team lost two of its three games and finished fourth.

The team started with a 128-run win over Horowhenua Kapiti, but then were well beaten by Hawkes Bay when Nelson was rolled for just 36.

During that match they also lost captain Marty Kain, who did not play on Sunday after suffering from a lower back complaint.

Nelson did bounce back with a far more determined effort in the battle for third against Taranaki, eventually losing by three wickets with Taranaki chasing down the target of 203 off the second-to-last ball of the game.

Aldin was happy with the information he gained on his players given the short, disrupted preparation he and the team had.

"I’ve been in Nelson for four weeks so it was good to see the

players out there in a match situation and learn their strengths and their weaknesses."

The first two weeks of Nelson club cricket have been rained out and Aldin says the players needed the time in the middle.

He says he did not blame the players for the poor batting effort against Hawkes Bay. "That bowling attack had all played first class cricket and I don’t know how many of our guys had been exposed to bowling of the pace of 135kph and 140kph. Only two of their guys made scores bigger than 10, so it was just one o'f those games on a tricky pitch.

Aldin says he was proud of how the team played against Taranaki, particularly the patience and application shown with the bat.

"The key thing for me was to get information about who my players are, not only on the field but off the field."

Tasman United get ‘free hit’ at Canterbury in opener Jacob Page A jovial Tasman United coach Richard Anderson has described how his team are desperate to earn three points in their opening Stirling Sports Premiership match against Canterbury United this Saturday.

Richard had plenty of lighter moments in his speech at the team launch on Saturday night, including suggesting Paul Ifill was asking for a transfer, wanting to finish top in the league and gaining qualification for the OFC. Light-hearted moments aside, Richard says he knows the team is desperate for victory, despite a tough start.

"I'd love to know who made the draw at NZ Football so I could send them a box of chocolates to say thanks for giving us three of last year's top four teams to start.

"Having said all that, we know we have a free shot against Canterbury and a free shot against Auckland where nobody expects us to challenge them.

"I know the preseason results haven't gone our way but we are close to a top performance."

Tasman United's Tinashe Marowa scored twice but the youth team went down 6-5 in an end-to-end encounter with canterbury United at saxton Fields on saturday.
