This month, over 43,000 electricity users will receive a financial boost thanks to an upcoming payout from the Network Tasman Trust (NTT).

The Trust has announced that over $3.4million will be shared with eligible customers connected to the Network Tasman Limited (NTL) electricity distribution network over the upcoming weeks. These funds are distributed to providers annually

One member of the Trust today is Ian Kearney, who was instrumental in setting up the Trust ownership model. In 2014 Ian received a NZ Order of Merit award and, in a following interview, he said that of all his career highlights - he was most proud of holding out against Government pressure to turn Network Tasman into a public company.

Ian said, “We had a big fight at the time, but it was the right decision.”

Nelson Tasman a ‘little island’ of sunshine ANNE HARDIE

If you think the sea has been warmer so far this summer, you are right - it’s up to two degrees celsius warmer in some places around the Top of the South due to a long run of warm, sunny days through spring and early summer.

NIWA meteorologist and forecaster Ben Noll says the Top of the South has been a localised hot spot in the last part of the year, and swimmers and surfers have benefited with sea temperatures warming up earlier - to 18 degrees by mid-December, and even up to 19 degrees in some bays.

“You seem to have been in your own little island in the Top of the South with your warm weather,” he says.

“Compared with other regions, you’ve had some pretty good weather.”

Ben says Nelson is tracking well to claim the title for the sunniest region in the country again, after losing the title for a couple of years.

Though, the year is not quite over yet.

While many other parts of the country have been tormented by dismal weather and storms through the year, the Top of the South has enjoyed a benign cli-

mate – apart from a tornado in April. It was the only blip in the weather this year, ripping a destructive path through the Moutere hills during a weather event that also delivered thunderstorms across the region.

Autumn ended up wetter than usual, but winter was drier and warmer.

The region’s winter rainfall was between 50 and 79 per cent lower than normal and temperatures were above average.

That continued through spring with between 60 and 80 per cent of the region’s normal rainfall, and again, slightly higher-than-average temperatures.

The result is drier soils, where the soil deficit is running between 20 and 50mm lower than normal through December,

which is “a pretty substantial deficit” with the bulk of summer still ahead for the region.

Southwest winds through December played a part as they swept down from the hills to lift temperatures across the region, leading to higher evaporation rates in the soil.

Ben says the region is drier earlier, but a drought is not a given.

He says the region has been on “borrowed time” with its low rainfall and sunny weather through the year, as the forecasting shows there “could be the opportunity for some bigger rainfalls” in the early to mid-part of 2024.

It is too early to determine what that will look like, but there may be relief on the horizon for farmers. and growers.

Saving kittens since she was very young, Fiona launched Tabby’s Kitten Rescues, around five years ago to rescue wild kittens from the ‘harsh realities of the wild’, while also de-sexing feral adult cats. Fiona treks across the region to save abandoned felines and dedicates her time, and her home, to nurturing the young wildlings.

“I’ve always been passionate about cats,” says Fiona. “I truly believe wild kittens make the best pets as they develop a real bond with the people who adopt them. I love the connections being made and seeing the kittens develop into much loved pets. It is a nice journey for families to be a part of and is so rewarding. That is actually what keeps me going!”

Adopting a wilding takes much commitment and patience, which is why Fiona meets with potential adopters before choosing their forever home. “Adapting kittens to a new environment is a bit of work. People must understand that, and be patient, while the kittens adjust. Some of them have had a really tough start in life and can be very timid. Trust has to be established.”

Having recently rescued 22 kittens in Motueka along with two adult cats, Fiona says the hardest thing about what she sees, is people. “Honestly, that’s the toughest part. The negligence, abandonment and dumping of these little creatures. People need to take responsibility for their animals by getting them desexed. Dispatching them is not a solution, it is unnecessary and cruel. It doesn’t take much to be kind.” Fiona has a ‘Give a Little’ page which helps with vet and food costs. But people can help in all sorts of ways.

“Monetary donations are always appreciated, and I also have a donation box at home where people can drop off items. I have foster homes across Nelson and a few lovely people who visit the kittens to help tame them. Getting cats desexed is a huge help to prevent the continuing suffering of kittens being born into the wild, becoming diseased, pregnant, injured and often dying.”

Trade Me users from the Nelson Tasman region are looking to head outdoors this summer, with ‘kayak’ being the top search in the region over the past 30 days.

“This shows Nelson locals are pretty keen on finding a bargain that will help them enjoy being outside,” says Trade Me Spokesperson, Millie Silvester.

“We have seen a mixed bag of searches in the last 30 days ranging from outdoor equip-

ment to specific branded clothing.”

Across the country, Millie says they see most Christmas searches revolve around making our homes look festive.

“Topping the most in demand items are decorations, Christmas trees and lights,” Millie says.

New day walk at Brook Waimārama Sanctuary KATE RUSSELL The Brook Waimārama Sanctuary has unveiled a new day walk - just in time for the summer holidays.

Accessible from the visitor’s centre, the Upper Valley Track is a full-day walk that offers a new, unique perspective on the sanctuary’s pristine landscapes.

The trail, accessible via the Koru Track toward Carter’s Track, is designed for intermediate walkers and winds its way through the sanctuary,

providing participants with a total incline of 200m.

Walkers will navigate through a variety of landscapes.

From the impressive stonemasonry track work to the hidden source of the Brook Waimārama Stream, the journey promises encounters with large rimu trees, beech forests, podocarps, and thick native forest.

The trail transitions from lush native forest to an area adorned with low-lying ferns, all while tracing the Waimārama Stream.

Over six months, the sanctuary’s track cutting volunteer team has invested hundreds of hours creating the trail.

The sanctuary’s chief executive, Ru Collin, says the addition of the track provides visitors with two dynamic walking experiences to relish within the sanctuary.

“This new day walk promises an exciting opportunity for the public to venture deeper and immerse themselves in the largely unexplored beauty of the Brook Waimārama Sanctuary.”

Wipeout on the water: Waterworld Wipeout has arrived in Kaiteriteri, creating an inflatable waterpark for beach goers this summer. Kaiteriteri Recreation reserve marketing executive Logan Van de Geest says the waterpark includes an obstacle course with jumps, slides, cliffs and a blow up “blob” for launching friends into the water. Wastewater blockages cost Nelson $160k MAX FRETHEY

False teeth and “expired” pet fish are just some of the items that Nelson residents have flushed down the toilet this year.

The city had 104 blockages recorded in its wastewater network over the 2022/23 financial year.

Of these, 14 were pump station blockages and 90 were reticulation blockages, costing an average of $1960 and $1450 to clear each time respectively.

Cumulatively, that adds up to almost $158,000 over the 2022/23 financial year.

The smaller pumps across Nelson’s wastewater network cost between $300 to $3000 to clear, but if a blockage causes an overflow, the response costs can exceed $50,000.

Contractors found false teeth, plastic toys, animal entrails, and “expired” pet fish in the city’s wastewater, in addition to the wet wipes that cause most of the blockages.

“When it comes to what should go down the toilet, it’s best to keep the three Ps in mind: poop, pee and

p a p e r ,” says Nelson City Council’s g roup manager infrastructure, Alec Louverdis.

But none of Nelson City Council’s 28 pump stations are as prone to blockages as the stations managed by the Nelson Regional Sewerage Business Unit (NRSBU).

The NRSBU serves Stoke and Tāhunanui in Nelson, but also Richmond, Brightwater, Wakefield, and Māpua in Tasman, through five pump stations and the wastewater treatment plant on Bell Island.

Two of the business unit’s pump stations – those on Beach Road in Richmond and Songer Street in Stoke – are blocked at least once a month, often by wet wipes, underwear, and sanitary products ‘ragging up’ the pumps.

On those occasions the pumps need to be lifted and cleaned, which costs the NRSBU a mini-

About $12,500 has been spent in the 2022/23 financial year clearing just the NRSBU’s facilities.

Screening – separating solids from the wastewater – at Bell Island treatment plant also costs about $4000 a month.

In November, business unit manager Nathan Clarke told councillors from Nelson and Tasman that the screens had caught “panty shields and rag and condoms and… someone’s false teeth that all come down the sewer”.

Campgrounds set for bumper summer KATE RUSSELL Camping hotspots around the region are set to be brimming with guests this summer, with some campgrounds being booked out earlier than usual.

Cable Bay Holiday Park is completely booked out from 26 December until 4 January.

“Our summer season is looking great - plenty of bookings already in, and with dry weather predicted, we will potentially get fuller,” says manager Bert Wilkinson.

“There is only the odd night available after the new year for the unexpected ‘drive-ins’ that we tend to get.”

Bert says the majority of their campers this summer are Kiwis, with an average stay of four nights.

“We seem to be getting bookings from Christchurch and Wellington, but a lot of our locals like the short drive to stay with us, and mention that they could drive for hours to be in a beautiful place like Cable Bay, but it’s on their doorstep.”

The campground has 24 powered sites, 25 unpowered sites, and three cabins that sleep between two and four people.

Bert says there have been a couple of recent additions to the facility, too.

“We recently upgraded the gas cookers and lighting in the kitchen and added three more powered sites. Our two-person cabin has had a mini-makeover and now sleeps two in a comfortable queen bed, and has a new sun deck added to the front.

“We also have a trampoline

and swing for the children or young at heart.”

Tāhuna Beach Holiday Park is also expecting a good season, with chief executive David Pattinson saying that bookings for their peak Christmas period (26 December until 6 January) are on par with last summer.

“So, very busy. We have Kiwis mostly, but an increasing number of internationals from February to April.”

The facility boasts 600 sites and 89 units, and David says the average stay for guests is around a week to 10 days.

Two of their accessible units have just been refurbished, at a cost of $95,000, and the holiday park is also now working with Gentle Cycling to offer an accessible package. Young visitors will also be able to enjoy a new playground and mega bouncy pillow.

Quinney’s Bush Camp, south of Nelson, is also in for a busy

summer.

“Our bookings are definitely up this year, as we were booked out for New Year’s about two months earlier than previous years,” says operations manager, Andrew Quinney.

Andrew says between Christmas and New Year is their busiest time, but they also see a significant number of bookings for Nelson Anniversary and Waitangi weekends.

International bookings are also on the rise for the campground.

“We mostly get bookings from fellow Kiwis, traveling from all over the country. However, this year we have seen an increase in international guests,” he says.

The campground has some exciting new additions to delight guests this summer, including two new BBQ areas, and a new river swimming hole complete with river slide.

L.A.B set for summer tunes in Nelson Nelson may have lost Bay Dreams in 2024 but some sweet summer sounds are still heading our way in the form of Kiwi legends L.A.B, who are taking to the Trafalgar Centre stage on Friday, 5 January. Kate Russell catches up with L.A.B’s lead vocalist and guitarist Joel Shadbolt about what Nelsonians can expect from their upcoming show, what they love about the Top of the South, and what the future holds for the Bay of Plenty-formed supergroup.

Are you excited to come back to the Top of the South and play to your fans here?

Absolutely. We love playing in Nelson, there’s always a beautiful community vibe amongst the people and it’s a stunning part of the country to visit!

What do you like about coming to Nelson?

Everyone is always so welcoming.

We’re from the Bay of Plenty, and the weather is always similar to home!

What are your favourite things to do in the region?

The beer and coffee culture is something that we always love to sample. Places like the Free House and any of the cafes are always worth a visit.

What can Nelson fans expect from your gig?

A full set of the bangers plus some new stuff that’ll be in the mix.

What do you want Nelson fans to bring with them to the show?

What is the long-term vision for L.A.B?

To take L.A.B to the world! I see us regularly touring internationally in the coming years. We’re starting to make some waves in the US and Europe, and we’re really excited to see where that’s going to go.

Who are you influenced by as

a band?

A mixture of things, but I would say the common thread is the music of the 70s. We all bring our different influences to the table classic rock, roots, reggae, funk, and soul, and it all ends up somehow working together to create our sound.

Looking back at all you have achieved, what are you most proud of?

Being true to ourselves as a band,

a n d that seven years later we are still here feeli n g fresh and loving what we do. I hope we can hold onto that for as long as we can.

You’ve recently released a new single, will there be an album to follow?

Yes! We’ve spent more time working on this album than on any others, and we think people are really going to like it.

You’ve had a busy tour schedule this year. How do you cope with the hectic schedule and juggle family/tour life?

It’s definitely been our busiest international touring year thus far. Our families hold it down at home, but we’re also really lucky that they come along for the ride when they can. Most of our part-

ners are here in Europe with us on this tour, which is a nice way to stay grounded during a crazy time.

You’ve played your fair share of festivals, do any particular ones stand out for you?

Electric Ave in Christchurch last year was certainly a highlight, there’s always something about crowds in the South Island! Any time we get to play back home in Tauranga is always a special show too.

How does L.A.B prepare for a gig?

We make sure we’ve slept and have eaten well. Had a good sound check, a nap, and a solid warm-up pre-show, then game time.

My favourite spot in Nelson is Tāhunanui Beach. I love to walk, run, swim, picnic and kayak there. It is also where I proposed to my wife, Linley.

It is equally loved by visitors. Tāhunanui is ranked among the best beaches in the South Pacific. Its popularity is such that it is home to the largest campground in the southern hemisphere.

Christmas is well known as a time of excess. An abundance of food is eaten, extra beers are consumed, a plethora of toys and gadgets flow into households – and out flows the excess packaging.

David Stephenson, Tasman District Council’s team leader for stormwater, rivers and waste, says that at this time of year there is a higher “put out” rate for recycling, with paper, plastic and glass streams all increasing in volume.

He says that the collection trucks need to empty more often, and the staff also have to navigate the complication of busier roads and kerbsides.

“Extra visitor vehicles sometimes [make] bin access and vehicle movements more difficult for the collection drivers.”

He describes a perfect yellow-lidded bin as containing only paper, cans and plastics stamped with 1, 2 or 5.

The containers must be rinsed clean, and it helps if dimpled meat trays from those summer barbeques are given a tap to remove extra water.

Paper, if it can be easily torn, is fine to go into the recycling bin, including wrapping paper that has the same texture as a brochure.

David says that toy and present packaging is often an unlabelled plastic, PVC or EPS (expanded polystyrene), none of which is kerbside-recyclable.

“It’s especially important to rinse your milk and cream bottles at this time of the year, and to make sure your pizza box is scraped free of any remaining cheese or sauce.”

Lids cannot be processed through the roadside recycling scheme either as they get caught in the machinery and need to go in the bin.

The 1.75km-long beach is a key part of the wider 93-hectare Tāhunanui Reserve. Just steps from the sand are multiple attractions including a hydro slide, BMX track, model railway, go-kart track, playground, skatepark, roller skating rink, trampoline park, sack slide, beach volleyball court and bumper boat park. Sports clubs such as football, rugby and touch regularly use the sports field.

Many of the facilities are top class. Sadly, we cannot say the same for the Nelson Surf Life Saving Club and sports facilities.

We used to have an iconic surf club building on the beach but it was removed in the early ’80s. The facilities for our surf club are an embarrassment – poky with equipment stored across four different sites including shipping containers.

NZ has a high fatal drowning rate compared with other Western nations.

There have already been 83 drownings this year. The surf club provides an important public service with its volunteer patrols, along with valuable opportunities for youth development. It is well run. President Noah Hosie on 1 December received a Lifetime Contribution Award for his services to surf lifesaving at the NZCT Nelson Sport and Recreation Awards.

An independent report, commissioned

by Council, says there is a “compelling case” for investment and “the most urgent need” relates to the surf club’s inadequate facilities with a new facility estimated to cost $3.2 million.

I’m delighted that Council this month supported my proposal to invest in a new surf club facility. Council cannot fund 100% of all such facilities and the proposal is for half of the cost to be met by Nelson Surf Life Saving Club.

Nature has bequeathed us the best beach in the country. Council is now proposing to build, with the surf club, the facilities to match.

Speedway hosts festive annual Demolition Derby Crumpled Christmas paper makes way for crumpled cars when Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway has its annual festive season Demolition Derby.

The December 30 meeting will have a 30-lap streetcar race before the crunch of metal ends the life of many cars before they get scrunched up and sent overseas to return as a dishwasher or washing machine.

There will be many different cars, some with odd paint jobs, the windows, glass, and lights are removed. A roll bar and sidebar are necessary for safety purposes, and some have an X on the door to alert others that the driver’s door is out of bounds. The referees watch for any car that doesn’t touch another as it passes them.

The golden rule is that you must hit a car as you pass it or the referees will send out a ‘Sheriff ’.

There have been many different cars over the years, a limousine, an old Hertz, the big old Vauxhalls are very rare but every now and then a big old beast is found in the car corners of someone’s farm. The tyres and radiator are important to keep intact - no water and the engine will overheat and seize, no tyres and you’re unable to move. The referees allow a minute for a car to start moving again if it stops, any longer and it is deemed to be out of the race.

Top South Media End of Year Sports Awards 2023 The 2024 Top South Media Sports Awards are a celebration of the moments and people that made the past 12 months another exciting year of local sport.

From the sometimes overlooked to the sensational individuals, we remember the moments that make sport in Nelson and Tasman so special.

Supporters of the year While there’s a lot of honourable mentions in this list, the award for 2024 goes to Marist Rugby Football Club. Week in and week out, rain or shine, their supporters lined the Trafalgar Park stands and sidelines to cheer on the green machine. And, although it might be some overlysupportive parents who were making the most noise, they consistently have one of the loudest home crowds of any local sports team, especially when their women play.

Rookie of the Year The NBS Nelson Giants welcomed the next generation of a great basketballing family when Hayden Jones took the court for the first time this year. While he might still be at school, the young basketballer has made a big impression on the court as he wears the same number as his dad, Phill, for the Giants.

Comeback of the Year It was a long road of recovery for netball umpire and player Myron Elkington, but he’s back to full fitness after a freak injury while standing in for the Nelson Men’s team saw him taken out of action. Myron was named in the 2023 National Umpire Squad and was selected to umpire the final of the New Zealand Open Champs based on his prior performances at the competition.

Best Upset of the Year You could have written off FC Nelson’s unbeaten streak when they were down 2-1 with the game seemingly in extra time against the Suburbs Reserves. But, with time almost up at Guppy Park, two late lapses in concentration at the back gifted Sheehan Financial FC Nelson two penalties in as many minutes to give them the win.

Fan of the Year Skippy Whatarangi is such a super-fan of local sport that he was given a shout out by the Giant’s MC for his commitment.

His eagerness to support every manner of sporting code with a custom made sign has made him a popular face amongst the fans and players alike at a lot of events around the region.

Underdog Victory Award This year the accolade is jointly awarded to Waimea College’s senior boys basketball team and Nayland College’s girl’s volleyball team (pictured). With both squads winning national titles (Nayland’s in Australia), they also outperformed expectations, and schools who are known for their dominance of the code, to lift their respective titles.

Enjoy your summer and stay safe around electricity Whether you are planning a holiday, hosting guests at your home, or tackling some DIY projects, taking some simple precautions can help ensure a safe and enjoyable summer.

If you are expecting a full house when the family comes to visit, avoid running additional multi-plugs and extension cords, and plug any unused outlets with safety covers if small children are coming to stay.

If you must use extension cords, always use an RCD (Residual Current Device), inspect the cords regularly, and make sure the leads are rated for outdoor use if using them outside. It is important to keep electronics and electrical leads far away from sprinklers and pools. Water and electricity don’t mix, so be sure to keep them apart. It is also important to remember that extension cords should not be used for a long-term or permanent solution.

If you plan to refresh your outdoor area or garden, be mindful of overhead power lines when working with ladders or scaffolding to ensure they don’t come into contact. If you are digging or planting, take a moment to consider where underground power cables are located, and avoid planting large trees near overhead power lines.

Three years ago, Brendon and Rochelle Mathews first opened The Bike Station in central Nelson and today the vibrant, expanding business has fantastic stock and a passionate, experienced team.

Rochelle says contrary to what some may think, Ebikes aren’t a lazy option.

“Ours are pedal-electric, so you still have to pedal but you get assistance as

you need it, so they’re suited to anyone, including those with a medical condition.

“Using an E-bike allows me to get uphill quickly and ride for longer.

Yohann, who is from the UK, says, “It’s been useful to experience how bike shops operate in other countries, including New Zealand.

I picked Nelson because of its awesome mountainbiking trails and The Bike Station had cool brands, a nice workshop and it’s a great place to work.” Meanwhile, two-time national track cycling champion and national record

holder Kaio, loves working at The Bike Station while teaching young bike enthusiasts (in schools) how to ride and it helps build up the local junior base.

Hunter, who has recently left college has been working fulltime at the store since November last year.

“I’ve done a lot of mountainbike racing, so my passion has inspired me to work here as a bike mechanic and be part of the mountainbiking community. It’s an awesome business and getting to work on bikes all day long is great.”

Lindsay, who has been with The Bike Station for just under two years, says he had been looking to get back into the bike industry as a mechanic after a stint in Whistler, Canada. “This is a nice place to work; a good bunch of guys. They have the same kind of passion that I have for mountainbiking, so it’s a no-brainer really.”

Finally, Sam began working for the business in December after moving from Auckland.
