Vaper considers cigarettes to access quit help KATE RUSSELL A Nelson man who quit vaping eight months ago is considering taking the habit back up due to a stop-smoking service refusing to prescribe him nicotine replacement lozenges - something they say they can only give to smokers.

The scenario is the same for other vapers trying to quit the addictive habit, and Nelson Tasman’s local GP spokesperson, Graham Loveridge, says it’s a concern only beginning to emerge in our community.

The man, who did not want to be named, says he was a heavy smoker for 15 years and switched to a high-strength vape juice as a means to stop smoking. In April he decided to quit vaping, so went to his GP for patches and 2mg lozenges, as he can’t use gum.

“I only used patches for three days as they kept coming off due to the nature

Ron McLuckie will be resuiting for his second consecutive Nelson Santa Parade this Sunday and says he could be sleigh riding for life.

The 71-year-old says he was on the ‘nice list’ for the jolly role when he was approached by the Nelson Santa Parade Trust chairperson, Trevor Marshall, after erecting the Christmas tree at the cathedral with his fellow Whakatū Rotary helpers in 2022.

“At the end of it, Trevor said to me ‘hey Ron, we need a Santa for the Santa Parade, would you like to be Santa?”, and I said ‘yes, I would love to be Santa’.

“One of the reasons I took it on, and it might sound crazy, but my late father [Mac], had always been Santa at a lot of community events, and I could remember

“So, I’m carrying on the tradition. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and this year Trevor said ‘I think you’ve got the Santa job for life’.”

Ron says his long-term Santa prospects has meant making a list and checking it twice to maintain the Santa magic.

“Probably the toughest situation I had last year was at the end of the parade at Santa’s grotto at the Trailways Hotel … one woman came up, and I would put her into mid-70s, and I’ll never forget this, she said ‘could you bring my husband back, he passed away’,” he says.

“Times like that you don’t know what to say, and you improvise, you need to think on your feet, I think the most important thing

is making those people feel very special.

“I just gave her a huge hug, and there was probably about 200 kids waiting at that stage, and I chatted to her for about two or three minutes saying, ‘he must’ve been a wonderful person’.”

Ron says kids have also approached him with difficult questions like ‘are you real?’.

“It’s a case of taking it with a lot of humour, a lot of empathy with the kids … and turning serious issues into happy moments,” he says. His Santa parade wish was the “biggest one that’s ever happened”.

“My hope and aspiration is that it can just be an incredibly joyful and happy time, bringing families together from all parts of the world,” he says. “What’s not to like about making hundreds of kids happy?”

Landfill primed for ‘nuclear’ response to truck driver on mobile MAX FRETHEY

One distracted driver may result in the region’s landfill banning a waste disposal company from using the facility.

On 26 July, the driver passed all signs and indicating arrows to direct him to the tip area at York Valley because he was distracted by his cellphone.

Members of the Nelson Tasman Regional Landfill Business Unit were told on Friday by general manager regional sewerage and landfill, Nathan Clarke, that the incident is proving “difficult”.

The root of the trouble is that the company that employs the driver is not responding to the business unit’s enquiries about the incident.

“People make mistakes, and I can understand that, but the fact that we haven’t got a response, or an adequate response, in quite a long time – and that’s not through our lack of asking – that’s the significant piece here,” Nathan says.

“I don’t want to go essentially nuclear on them but at the same time we’ve got to make

sure the people on the site are safe.”

Nelson councillor Mel Courtney pointed out that using a cellphone while driving is an offence on the country’s roads and that perhaps the landfill should investigate delivering penalties in the future.

As the landfill is not a private road it’s not currently known how the business unit could enforce that rule, but Nathan highlighted that the threat of not being able to use the Nelson Tasman region’s only active landfill could be enough.

“The most significant thing to any company that disposes waste is if they can’t dispose waste. I don’t think we’re going to go there but, at the same time, maybe we have to,” he says. “They’ve got to be cognisant that safety is paramount.”

Landfill business unit chair and Tasman’s deputy mayor, Stuart Bryant, asked if the planned temporary transfer facility would have reduced the likelihood of this incident occurring.

Currently, trucks are guided to different locations around the landfill’s tip face to dispose

of their waste. The landfill is working towards installing a transfer facility that would allow trucks to offload their waste in the same location every visit.

Nathan didn’t think the transfer facility would have had an impact and could even encourage complacency because the drivers would always know where to go. However, he did add that the transfer facility would reduce the likelihood of many of the landfill’s other health and safety incidents.

“The driver behaviour thing is something we’ll have to get on top of and make sure that we are trying to maintain a safe [environment].”

The temporary transfer facility is expected to be constructed by early March.

Nelson City Council provides administration services for the landfill business unit and declined to reveal which company was involved in the incident.

“Particularly as the new coalition government intends to make access to cigarettes and tobacco easier. Nicotine replacement patches, gum and lozenges were designed for smokers and can help people to stop vaping as well.

“Nicotine withdrawals can be very difficult and there are studies underway, to discover better ways to support people to quit vaping.” Rachel plans to follow-up with the Ministry of Health to ask what the best vaping cessation tools may be, and how they might be made available through Quitline.

Victory businesses fundraise for families in need KATE RUSSELL A group of Victory businesses are hoping to ease the pressure on local families this Christmas.

A tattoo and coffee-themed fundraiser has been planned for Saturday, 16 December at Artistic Creations Tattoo Studio on St Vincent St, with all the proceeds going to charity.

There will be a whole bunch of tattoo flash art designs if you fancy some new ink, coffee from Ace of Cups around the corner, as well as hotdogs and more on the day which will run from 9am - 9pm.

Niko Bender and Danisa Bull from Artistic Creations are driving the fundraiser, and they hope to make it an annual event. They have also teamed up with Victory

Boxing, who will help distribute the funds to those in need.

“I grew up in Victory Square and have been working here for eight or nine years,” says Niko. “It’s part of me, so I want to help out the community. It’s a tough time at the moment for many families financially and Christmas makes it even tougher.”

Murder-accused appears in court TRACY NEAL

There were tense scenes in the Nelson District Court on Friday as the man accused of murdering James Whitikau Barton made a first appearance after his recent arrest.

The accused, who has interim name suppression, appeared via video link, bedraggled and wearing a bright orange T-shirt. A woman yelled a threat from the public gallery before walking out.

She was among several of Barton’s family members who were warned by Judge Robert Spear that he would clear the court if there was any misconduct.

A 30-year-old woman who was arrested the night before and charged with being an accessory after the fact to Barton’s murder appeared in court on Friday, but was denied bail.

The woman entered no plea to the charge and was remanded in custody until 15 December.

The man accused of the murder, aged 33, entered no plea to a charge of murder by stabbing or cutting. He pleaded not guilty to further charges of driving while under the influence of drugs, five charges of driving while disqualified for a third or subsequent time and four breaches of home detention. The 65-year-old pensioner says her idea to become an author and support readers with her condition came about in the first Covid-19 lockdown and first hit the local and online bookshelves in October.

“I must’ve been bored because I decided to write a story … it’s a true story, it’s about a guinea pig I had when I was a child, and he went missing for three

months,” she says.

“Just because you have any sort of disability, you can still do whatever you like, nothing holds you back if you’ve got the drive.”

Caroline says the protagonists in her book, Polly and Wills, represent her and her brother, and the guinea pig is dedicated to her uncle Norman.

She says feedback, including from visually-impaired readers, since the book launch had been “wonder-

“I’ve had a lot of comments about how wonderful the book is … and that the illustrations look truly fantastic,” she says.

“I have donated some to the public Christmas trees for the children and I donated one to the children’s ward too [at Nelson Hospital].

“I have got four more ideas in my head [to support the visually-impaired].”

Caroline says she would also work on an audio version.

Your purchases help both the charity and the planet. Larger families may choose to buy for just one designated person, or bring a gift for a central pile, which are then randomly distributed. Gift an experience. Sign up for a class you can do together.

Give vouchers. Create your own ‘Mystery Weekend’ or a mystery picnic spot, complete with cucumber sandwiches and red checked table cloth!

Make 2023 the year of creating new Christmas traditions.

Try to include folk with families living elsewhere, or who’re spending their first Christmas without a loved one. Shift the focus to gathering with special people, sharing food, cultural traditions, stories and jokes – and maybe a bit of back-yard cricket!

Remember Christmas is about joy, peace and goodwill, not indigestion, a hangover, and bins bulging with packaging!

Back in the spin of things GORDON PREECE Peter Gibbs has recrafted his pottery passion three decades after he stepped away from the wheel and kiln.

The retired sub-editor says his pottery work began in the “great crafting revolution” in the 70s and, after he left his teaching role in Auckland, he made it his fulltime work, establishing a workshop in Onekaka in 1975.

He opened Omaio Pottery in 1979 after moving to Waimea West, and was a founding committee member of the Nelson Potters Association. Being out of the industry since the early 90s, being asked to write a pottery history piece for Nelson Clay Week last year re-sparked his passion and, after discussing the idea with friends, they donated him a wheel and kiln, and he established a pottery space in his

When he noticed how many teapots, bowls, and vases he’d made, he thought he should consider selling a few, which he later did at Wall to Wall Art in October.

Update from Rachel Boyack MP Parliament has resumed this week, and I am back in Wellington working as part of the Labour Opposition. My job will be to hold the new Government to account for their promises and decisions, while continuing to ensure investment is made in critical Nelson projects, like our new Hospital, public and community housing, public transport and fixing the Richmond transport mess.

Last week Labour Leader Chris Hipkins announced our portfolios for this term of Parliament, and I am pleased to be Labour’s Spokesperson for ACC, Arts, Culture and Heritage, and Animal Welfare.

I am particularly delighted to be the Spokesperson for Arts, Culture and Heritage given that Nelson is one of New Zealand’s centres of excellence in the arts.

As the holder of a Music Degree and former member of the New Zealand Youth Choir I’m excited to be able to put my skills in this area to good use for Nelson, and New Zealand.

Already we are seeing the new Government take action that will harm New Zealanders. Repealing Labour’s world-leading smokefree legislation will undermine our actions to end the harm caused in our community from nicotine use. Health professionals across New Zealand are calling for the Government to reconsider their decision and prioritise the health of New Zealanders.

We will also be pushing back hard on the Government’s planned repeal of Fair Pay Agreements. This week I am meeting Early Childhood Educators in Nelson to support them in their continued push for a Fair Pay Agreement. Our low- and middle-income earners deserve a better system for negotiating wage increases and I will continue to advocate strongly for decent wages for Nelson workers in Parliament.

Nelson tourism among country’s best ANTON MEYER Two Nelson-based tourism companies have been named among the country’s best.

Pic’s Peanut Butter was named a finalist for the Tourism Environment Award of the 2023 New Zealand Tourism Awards, with Kiwi Journeys claiming a finalist spot in the ‘Visitor Experience’ category.

Although narrowly missing out on the win, Kiwi Journeys founder Andrew Schwass says that being named second was a “pretty good feeling”.

“It was announced through Tourism Industry [Aotearoa] but posted online, so we all gathered around the phone and watched it.”

Nelson-based Kiwi Journeys offers biking experiences where visitors can hire bikes and e-bikes for guided or self-guided tours of the region’s trails. For the last 11 years, Andrew and his team have grown Kiwi Journeys from their initial base in Nelson to include the West Coast and, in October, expanded into Central Otago.

“It was born out of customer demand, so our clients would bike

with us on the Great Taste Trail and West Coast Wilderness Trail and say ‘what else can we do”.

Andrew previously lived in Otago so knows a lot of people in the bike business.

“Since the opening it’s doing well, and there are a lot of multi-day bookings and people want to cycle the different trails in Central Otago”.

He says the last three years, particularly the Covid years, were good for the bike industry.

“The public got into cycling and bought e-bikes and bikes; we’ve just sort of grown from that.”

Andrew says the key to their success is his great staff who offer a genuine Kiwi experience to clients. With over 450 high-end bikes, the experience and service are “why people come back”.

He hopes to see the business expand further, including offering tours of the Kawatiri and Whale Trails.

“As long as the demand is there, we’ll keep on growing and I’d like to find a bigger partner to team up with one day”.

The judges of this year’s tourism awards said that overall the entries painted a very compelling

picture about the resilience of the tourism industry.

“The finalists are a showcase of grit, ambition, and positive contribution. Their achievements are testament to the quality of tourism leaders across the industry and their ability to innovate,” TIA chief executive Rebecca Ingram says.

Andrew says, the award ceremony in Wellington provided the opportunity to meet the other finalists, and the winner of their category, Altitude Tours from Queenstown, a company he hopes to work with in the future.

Breakthrough bioactive compound secures approval Aether Pacific’s promising future in medicinal innovation Aether Pacific Pharmaceuticals, the parent company of business units Medical Kiwi, The Pain Clinic and Hardie Health, has achieved a significant milestone with the global patent approval of its bioactive compound, Balaenone. Balaenone is a type of sesquiterpene – a class of compounds that are commonly found to have positive medicinal properties. Sequiterpenes are a class of terpenes found in natural products that have attracted significant interest among medical researchers for their therapeutic properties.

The patent has been formally granted in the jurisdictions of Great Britain, France and Germany.

The patent, covering all medicinal uses of Balaenone, serves as a strong barrier to entry, to support Aether Pacific’s pursuit of future commercial channels for health applications.

The primary use-case for Balaenone is expected to be in the field of antibiotic-resistant bacteria – an increasingly prevalent issue in the field of global health where new classes of antibiotics are required to treat bacterial infections that have become resistant to standard care.

The development of new medical formulations using Balaenone will be carried out in conjunction with the Ferrier Research Institute – the chemistry focused R&D arm of

Victoria University of Wellington – which is also a shareholder in Aether Pacific.

The journey began in 2019 when Aether Pacific’s 100%-owned subsidiary Hardie Health, filed the patent application under the Patent Cooperation Treaty. Hardie Health was founded by mining entrepreneur Mr Duncan Hardie in 2016 and is focused on the research, development and commercialisation of plant-based novel compounds which can be used across a range of applications.

Now, with granted patents in key European jurisdictions and pending approvals in China and Japan, Aether Pacific with applications in the USA, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and South Korea now expected to be granted in coming years.

Pantomime takes new direction STAFF REPORTER Nelson Repertory Theatre is set to perform its annual family pantomime at the Theatre Royal next week - but it won’t be like any pantomime you’ve seen before.

‘Go West’ tells the tale of Bella McSporran, a loveable Scottish Dame whose home is in jeopardy and sets sail on a journey west to New Zealand.

It promises to be a “heartwarming and hilarious” pantomime full of songs, silliness, and smiles - however, writer and director Alli Campbell says that this is a pantomime unlike any other.

Alli explains that last year she was faced with some “hard truths” about her previous pantomimes after chatting to some theatre members.

“We have many members who are from the LGBTQ+ community, and one of them raised with me how hurtful and often inappropriate it is to have the punchline be solely around having a man in a dress,” she says.

It was a sentiment echoed by many she spoke to, and she said that her initial reaction was one of bewilderment.

“I honestly thought, what’s the big deal with having a pantomime dame?”

The exercise facilitated a realisation for Alli - that the humour didn’t work because of how inappropriate it was.

“It really made me stop and think, and then all of a sudden, I couldn’t unsee it. I went back and critically reevaluated some of my past scripts, noticing how lazy some of the jokes were and also how absolutely inappropriate they were, too.”

After consulting a number of theatrical, knowledgeable, and interested parties, Alli realised

that for the new script to work she had to modify the behaviour of all characters to be appropriate for today’s modern audiences.

“Last year’s pantomime [a traditional panto version of Camelot] had a princess being kissed while asleep and someone in the audience shouted that they ought to ask for consent. It may be a traditional story, but they had a point.

Traditions are worth reviewing from time to time.”

Year of ‘treasured’ Nelson celebrations for council’s 150th anniversary MAX FRETHEY

Most of the funds will go towards the book, which is due to be published in 2025, marking the end of the anniversary events.

Nick says, beginning with “a hoot and a bit of a laugh at ourselves” with CHONA and ending by recording the history of their “treasured” city nicely bookends the year of celebrations.

“There’s a whole lot about this community that we have to celebrate.”

A year of celebrations for Nelson City Council’s 150th anniversary began last week with “a bit of a laugh”.

While the council’s sesquicentennial isn’t official until 30 March 2024, the festivities started with the opening night of the CHONA play on Friday.

CHONA, otherwise known as the Complete History of Nelson (Abridged), explores key events in Nelson’s history – including the wrecking of the Fifeshire, Hūria Mātenga’s sea rescue, the accomplishments of nuclear physicist Ernest Rutherford, and the building of Rocks Road – all in a tight 80 minutes.

“We’re not doing a lecture,” says CHONA writer and actor Greg Cooper. “We’re primarily there to entertain.”

Mayor Nick Smith gave the play a glowing review at a small ceremony that marked the beginning of celebrations on Wednesday.

“It was so bloody funny, I ended up bursting out in laughter several times.”

“We’re going to strive… to make 2024 a year to remember,” says councillor Mel Courtney.

Mel leads the council’s Sesquicentennial Taskforce, having been present on the council for its 100th anniversary celebrations,

which is tasked to consider the 150th commemorations.

One of its key responsibilities is putting together a third history book chronicling the last 50 years of Nelson City Council, following on from two earlier books that document the first and second 50-year periods of the council’s history.

“There’s a lot to it… I’ve never

known so much in my life about publishing a book,” Mel jokes.

Nelson’s top sports men and women shine Sibling pair find top gear at awards night

Finn and Niamh Fisher-Black’s sibling rivalry drove them to improve but also showed them what’s possible.

Finn Fisher-Black has bragging rights over his sister Niamh after the professional cycling pair of siblings swept the NZCT Nelson Sports and Recreation Awards on Friday night.

The duo picked up Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year, respectively, but Finn also received the most prestigious award of the evening, the Sportsperson of the Year.

While he was not there to receive the silverware in person, he joked in a video message played at the awards night that beating his sister sweetened the win. “I’m especially happy to edge out my sister. I won’t let her forget about this one.”

Niamh and Finn’s father, Jim Black, was in attendance to receive the award. He says it’s a special night for the family, “where it all started”.

While he says they will always compete to oneup the other, sibling rivalry has also been a part of their success.

“They inspire each other, push each other and see what they can achieve through each other.”

The award comes after Finn’s stellar year on the UCI World Cycling Tour, claiming his first professional victory by winning the opening stage of the Giro di Sicilia in April.

Finn also won the best young rider jersey in the same race after coming in 8th place on the final stage.

Niamh has continued where she left off with another year of consistent results, having won the U23 World Championship last season.

“Sorry, I can’t be there tonight. I’m still currently in Spain. It’s a real honour,” she said via video.

Overcoming adversity and a terminal diagnosis It was an emotional reception as the Bowls Nelson Senior Ladies won Team of the Year at the NZCT Nelson Sport and Recreation awards on Friday night.

Unbeknownst to the judges, the team had battled adversity at almost every stage after team member Colleen Earl was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer earlier this year.

While they had travelled with a reserve, Colleen didn’t back down to her condition and the medication’s side effects and was instrumental in bringing home the National Intercentre title.

The team had decided Colleen would be the one to receive the award on the night if they won,

but she was too unwell to attend the awards evening and team coach Dave Edwards accepted it on her behalf.

His speech about how the team was in disbelief at Colleen’s grit and determination to play and win for her teammates saw the crowd wiping away tears and one of the biggest applauses on the night.

“We had a motto, #ForColl,” Dave says.

Alongside the team’s Intercentre victory, they also saw regional success in winning the Higgins’s Shield Zone, as well as finishing first in the Super Sixes South Island Tournament and first in the Ann Burn Trophy.

at NZCT Sport and Recreation Awards Olympic pair recognised as Nelson Legends Nelson Legends of Sport have two new inductees, Olympic pair Rod Dixon and Jeff Rackley.

It was a surprise for the pair, with each in attendance thinking the other was going to be receiving the award only for them to find that they were both being inducted. Rod Dixon was one of just three medals New Zealand returned with from the 1972 Olympic games in Munich, winning bronze in the 1500 metres with a time of 3:37.5. It was was a run that also broke Peter Snell’s New Zealand record. He also at-

tended the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games, the Los Angeles 1984 Olympic Games and won the 1983 New York Marathon. Jeff fought in 100-odd amateur fights and seven professional bouts. He won the Jameson Belt three times for being the most “scientific” boxer at the national championships and fought in the last 15 round professional fight in the country, a fight he won. The pair have been enshrined in Nelson’s sporting history and the award is further recognition of the special feat the two men accomplished.

Coach of the Year:

Rebecca Brosnan is the 2023 Rutherford Hotel Coach of the Year for her services to underwater hockey. Rebecca's involvement with the sport spans over three decades, making her playing debut with the New Zealand team in 1991, retiring as one of the country's most capped female players. While she still gets in the water, having played a few games for the New Zealand women's masters team earlier this year, it was in between her commitments as co-coach of the New Zealand elite women's team who finished fifth at the Elite Women's grade.

Lifetime Contribution:

Lifetime Contribution to Sports awards were given to Heather Bryant, Noah Hosie, Elaine Hemi, Gary Hinks and Keith Richardson. Heather has been a long-term supporter of Nelson Hockey as their chairperson from 2016-2022 and an association member since 2000. Gary has supported the Nelson Suburbs since his playing days in the 1970s, having held various administration roles for decades and is a life member. Elaine is the president of Bowls Nelson, having served on the board since 2000 and is a life member of United

Barney Aupa'au was awarded the 2023 NBS Community Impact Award for his work with 'Me vs Me'. The community project group focuses on mental health and well-being through cold water immersion, empowering each other one cold dip at a time.

Barney says it's been really cool to see his project, standing for Mental Exhaustion vs Mental Elevation, have a massive positive impact on the community which has since expanded with groups now in Christchurch, Wellington and Gisborne.

Emerging Talent:

While the Blenheim footballer and Nelson Suburbs striker might have missed out in the Marlborough Sports awards, Katie Pugh was awarded an Emerging Talent Award.

On top of scoring a 94th-minute goal to win 1-0 for the New Zealand U16 Women in the final of the Oceania Football Confederation's qualifying tournament to the 2024 U17 World Cup, Katie scored in every game of the tournament.

At the business end of graduation...

Gillan Harris (Ngāti Tūwharetoa, Ngāti Wai, Ngāti Manuhiri) says the Bachelor of Commerce at NMIT Te Pūkenga has opened up several options for him.

Originally from Christchurch Gillan, age 25, has been in Nelson for the past few years. He is due to graduate this year.

“I have made plenty of good friends here,” he says. “It is easy to engage in the classroom because of the smaller numbers. You can have some proper discussions and the tutors have a lot of industry experience for context.”

Gillan received the Nelson Pines Scholarship and the Johnston Association Scholarship for 2023, reducing his course-related costs by $6,000.

As part of graduating with his Bachelor of Commerce, Gillan needs to complete a research project. He is looking into how entrepreneurs in Aotearoa incorporate Māori kaupapa in their businesses.

Once he has finished his study, he intends to travel to Colombia on a Māori business programme which aims to increase the connections between other indigenous communities

across Asia Pacific.

“I am looking forward to the opportunity,” he says.

Owning nine eateries across the Top of the South, with five in Nelson and four in Marlborough, the food journey began for Bu-nga and her late husband Nuttavut Rodsienglum over a decade ago. Both from rural provinces in Thailand, the couple met in Blenheim and quickly bonded over their shared love of delicious fresh

food. Inspired by their family recipes, the couple set out opening their first restaurant, Chai-Yo in Nelson, celebrating the flavours of Thailand, followed by Lemongrass’s fresh Thai and Asian fusions, before successively establishing both of these in the Marlborough region as well. After acquiring Bamboo Kitchen in Blenheim with a taste of Chinese, Thai and Japanese, the couple quickly established Chinese Asian fusion restaurant Miracle on Hardy Street. Ben & Maxxi soon followed, and they are excited to introduce a brandnew menu with delicious new dining options that follow a Chinese and Thai influence, and for the first time ever bring Yum-Cha and Dim-Sum options to Richmond diners.

“He had my back while I fronted everything. Every recipe served was created by Nuttavut so his presence will never go, people enjoy their meals because he made them delicious.

“The last few years have been a challenge, especially when Nuttuvat passed away in early 2022 after a long illness. I have had many people ask me why I continue on with everything, why take so much on. My reply to them is, why can’t I? I know I can do it. I learnt from

My sister Wanlapa has been a tremendous help. My team are like family and rallied around when things got hard. Because of the people I have around me, I realised I can do it.” The recipes are all Nuttuvats creations, says Bu-nga.

“He was always happiest when he was in the kitchen, while I dealt with the more business side of things. Our eldest son now helps out and is working at one of the Blenheim sites, learning his way and helping me with raising his younger brother.”

Complementing the business they built together, Bu-nga has also taken on a low-sugar, lowcarb sauce company, Jok'n'Al, making diabetic-friendly jams, sauces, toppings and condiments. Established by John and

Alison Howie in Marlborough over 20 years ago, Bu-Nga purchased the business in Nov, 2022 when John and Alison decided it was time to retire. Now distributed word-wide, Bu-nga says the product will be available both online and through the NBM Asian Street Eats location on Hardy Street.

“When Nuttuvat first became ill we were forced to search for low-carb and low-sugar alternatives that are packed with flavour and the Jok'n'Al range aligns with this and our vision for the future of NBM. “John and Alison have developed a number of wonderful products that will be maintained alongside new product lines that are in the planning.

We are slowly introducing the new branding, giving things a bit of a joosh up and phasing out the old label over time as we build the brand.”

New league offers more chances to shine JACK MALCOLM The introduction of a new national basketball league has been hailed as an opportunity for local players to showcase their skills.

This season’s NBL will see a Rapid League introduced to run in conjunction with the main tournament, consisting of players from the existing franchises who are not in the starting lineup or an import.

Games will have four-minute quarters and be held as curtain-raisers for the NBL, and will give more players in the team a chance to shine, says NBS Nelson Giants head coach Mike Fitchett.

“It’s an awesome opportunity for our young players.

“For a club like us, those guys are normally local guys who will get the opportunity to play in front of their friends and family.”

He says, it’s also an opportunity for his assistant coaches, Tom Gargiulo and Ben Sheat, who will coach the Rapid League team.

It’s a chance for the players to impress their coaches while also generating some highlight reels for their agents to share with prospective teams.

“The reality is, it’s hard to force your way into the playing lineup from just training,” says Mike.

“It’s an opportunity to have 16 minutes of game time and fasttrack their development into real games. It keeps our bench guys motivated.”

Mike says that it’s exciting to have a double-header for every home game this season and wanted to thank their sponsors for additional support in funding the team’s increased costs of having to travel with a second playing team for their away games.

Called up to Central despite missing trial JACK MALCOLM Nelson College cricketer Ben Neale was given an extra graduation present with his selection to the Central Districts U19 team.

The left-arm orthodox spinner says it’s the first time he will strip up for the Central Districts when they take on the NZC National U19 Tournament, which started over the weekend in Canterbury.

Having missed the trials due to prior commitments with the Nelson Griffins’ Newman Shield game, he didn’t know what his chances of making the team had been.

“I wasn’t too fussed about it, really. The stats and the club stuff would take care of that.”

For Ben, who plans to travel internationally to continue playing cricket through the winter before coming back for another summer of local cricket, the U19 tournament is an exciting prospect. But he’s taking it all in his stride and just seeing where the wind blows him instead of dedicating himself to a specific pathway.

“I’ll see where the stats take me. If it happens, it happens, but if it doesn’t, it doesn’t.”
