Andrew Fleming, 47, last week pleaded guilty, via video link in the Nelson District Court, to all charges relating to the April 30 accident on Waimea Rd. The parents of the boy, who cannot be named due to a suppression order, were driving home from a friend’s house when they saw headlights before it slammed

head-on into their car. The expectant mother was rushed to Nelson Hospital where she was put under general anaesthetic and had her son via c-section at just 30-weeks. The next morning the mother and her son were flown to Wellington Hospital but over the course of five days, he deteriorated. Results

of an MRI scan showed that there was severe bleeding on his brain and he wouldn’t survive. The baby died just five days after he was born. The father now wants to leave the incident behind him. “I’m just glad it’s all over and [Fleming’s] now somewhere he can think about it all. I hope his

Judge Tony Zohrab responded that medical help would be available to Fleming in prison, which was the only appropriate option due to the nature of the offending. “I’m told you’ve had some issues in terms of the crash ... the offending took place in April and in my view appropriate medical help will be available to you in prison.” Fleming was remanded in custody to be sentenced on December 20.

Woman sold $6000 of fake items online A 26-year-old woman who ‘cut and pasted’ listings from Ebay to items that never existed has been convicted for her actions. Jade Ransom-Hall set up multiple fake Facebook profiles under the names of Dan Newman and Ryan Goodall over the month of June, a Nelson District courtroom heard on Monday. Several fake email accounts were also created, each linked to a mobile number to allow her to use Facebook Messenger. On July 1 she listed her first item on the “anything hunting nz” Facebook page under the fake

profile of Dan Newman. She offered a rangefinder or hunting scope for $400 plus $10 for shipping, which was purchased by the first victim. Over the next month she sold nineteen more items that she never had in her possession. She sold GPS dog collars, a Samsung Galaxy Note 8, more tracking collars, a Playstation 4 and finally, on August 27, she used TradeMe to sell a thermal vision telescope for $1300. Ransom-Hall says she was “short of funds to meet day-to-day expenses” and admitted that she cut and pasted images from the online sale site

Unanswered teacher job adverts and desperate pleas for relievers are hitting Nelson schools hard, as teachers continue their battle for better conditions. The region’s 500 primary and intermediate teachers and principals are preparing to walk off the job next Thursday as part of a week of proposed nationwide rolling strikes. The Nelson strikes will fall on November 15. On Monday, NZEI and the Ministry entered “urgent” bargaining. As of time of publication, no new offers are on the table to address either pay or time. NZEI have lodged claims for a 16 percent pay rise and employment of a special educational needs coordinator. After the first strike, the Ministry offered 9.3 percent over three years across the board. NZEI Nelson Primary Teachers co-ordinator Stacey Ashley says time is running out. “Chris Hipkins announced that 850 classrooms will not have teachers next year at this stage, and it’s happening in Nelson. “There have been schools here that have advertised jobs and have had no applicants.

The wet weather made way for cider lovers at Founders Park on Saturday as thousands packed in for the third annual Cider Fest. The celebration of cider saw about 2600 people descend on the festival – all hoping to taste the best ciders in the country. their seven days in the cider capital of the country had been incredible. “Today is our one-week anniversary, we spent our honeymoon in Nelson, went to Collingwood, Golden Bay and today is the last day, great to have a few drinks in great weather to top it off.” It was a local celebration on Friday night too, as Peckhams, from Upper Moutere won the premium award at the New Zealand Cider Awards. And Grace says next year is already booked in. The festival

NEWS Bryan Adams to rock Nelson: Canadian rock star Bryan Adams is heading to Nelson to take punters a little closer to Heaven in March. Adams announced the Nelson stop, at Trafalgar Park, on Monday as part of his four-city tour. His two South Island destinations will feature special guests Dave Dobbyn and the Jordan Luck Band. Adams’ tour adds to Nelson’s run of big events - with the All Blacks playing here this year and Bay Dreams Festival coming to Trafalgar Park in January. Second woman knocked out: A woman was knocked unconscious in Buxton Square Carpark just minutes after another female was assaulted in the same place. Police are investigating the second assault which happened outside the public toilets in the carpark at around 1am on Sunday October 21. Detective Ruth Collins says the young woman was leaving the toilets when she was confronted by an unknown female, thrown to the ground and knocked unconscious. Detective Collins says the female who assaulted the victim along with around six other females, surrounded the car and hit it, until it was able to drive away. House prices near $600k: The average house price in Nelson is now close to $600,000 as values rise 7.7 percent in the year to October. The most recent figures from QV show Nelson prices rose by 1.7 percent in the last quarter with average value in the city is now $593,947. Meanwhile, values in the Tasman District have also continued to rise, up 7.2 percent year on year to $586,219.

Sharon finishes her race Man who saved her life last year walked Sunday’s half marathon with her

Andrew Board A year ago Craig Vercoe met Sharon McDonald at the Nelson Half Marathon in rather dire circumstances. Sharon had just suffered a massive heart attack minutes into the 21.1km walk race as Craig was walking towards Saxton Athletics track for the start of the half marathon run. He performed CPR that would save her life. Twelve months on Craig and Sharon met again at the Nelson Half, this time to compete in it side-by-side. “We ran into each other in the street one day and I asked how she was and she mentioned that she was walking again and hoping to do the Nelson Half and it came up in conversation that we should do it together,” says Craig. For Sharon the whole week leading up to the race was emotional. “I was nervous but after what happened last year I was determined to get fit. I did a lot more training but I still felt a bit worried before the race, hoping I finished this time.”

They did, in three hours, one minute and 23 seconds, earning them each a first place in their respective age group. Craig says his focus was making sure Sharon enjoyed the day. “I was just happy to be out there and to see her enjoy it. It was a beautiful day and it was nice to be with her doing what she enjoys. “Early on there were a few

jokes about the year before, we tried to keep it light hearted. But the main focus was to just enjoy it.” After the race Sharon presented Craig with a plaque featuring a photo and a verse she wrote, highlighting her gratitude. Craig says it was “a very nice gesture” but he feels that anyone would have done the same in a similar situation.

“I hope anyone else would do the same, it’s just what you do.” A record 675 runners and walkers took part in one of the four challenges on offer at the festival of running with Nelson College teacher Phil Costley winning the feature half marathon in a time of 1 hour, 13 mins, 35 seconds. Fifteen years ago, Jason Monopoli and his wife Jennifer started a business in their lounge. A conversation with an acquaintance led to the discovery that the ‘Service sticker’, that non-assuming sticker that workshops put in the corner of a vehicle’s windscreen, were not customized or charged for. “All service stickers to that point were supplied free-of-charge by the major oil suppliers such as Mobil or Castrol, and featured their own logo and involved print runs in the hundreds of thousands.” The gap in the market led to the birth of Orange Dog, now based in Wakatu Estate in Stoke. “At the time, no one was doing what we are doing so, as well as starting a new business with very little experience, we also had to create an entirely new market.” Jason says creating the need involved finding a way to effectively target those workshops, illustrate

the marketing opportunities that customised service stickers presented and then convince them to change a work-life habit and then actually pay for them. Fast forward 15 years and the automotive print suppliers took out the Supreme Award at the 2018 Nelson Tasman Chamber of Commerce Business Awards on Friday night. Director Jason says the win is testament to his hard-working staff behind the scenes. “We have always stayed low key, we haven’t really put ourselves out there, but we decided to enter the awards as a team building thing which ruined ‘our under the radar’ approach a bit.” Jason says now that they have had the weekend to let it sink in, he is incredibly proud of what his team has achieved. “I think it is our niche as a business that sets us apart. We compete with other bigger businesses because we just decided to focus on one aspect and do it really well.” Now the company is looking to grow even further afield.

Checkmate for Nelson Intermediate Charles Anderson Samuel Clark reckons there are some good life lessons to be learned from the game of chess. “There is strategy, decision making. It has it all.” Which is just as well because Samuel was part of the five-student Nelson Intermediate School team that recently came away with fourth place at the Chess Power Nationals in Auckland. “It’s nervous at the start but with chess, when you get into it, it gets easier.” The team were the top South Island

team in the competition and were there because they won the regional competition. The team’s event works by each of the members playing individual games with their points being added up at the end. In the individual event Samuel, Alexandre and Idris came in first, second and third. “We have all known how to play since we were little,” says Samuel. “But we all started getting into it when we were year seven.” The boys are off to secondary school next year but say they will keep their passion for chess with them.

Dog walkers head to the moon

GALA: St Joseph’s Spring Gala was in full swing on Sunday afternoon with plenty to keep the whole family entertained. The usual draw cards: sweet stalls, white elephant stall and delicious food were on offer, but this year also offered a few extras. A haunted house scared those courageous enough to enter and entertainment from The Recliners were the main act for listening pleasure. The event was one of many held around the country over the weekend to officially launch SPCA’s ‘Walk Your Dog to the Moon’ campaign. Animal lovers are encouraged to participate in jointly walking 385,500kms – the distance from earth to the moon - over the month of November, to raise funds for the SPCA. 'Wall of Remembrance' a tribute to veterans Charles Anderson Editor

For the first time all 3,600 Nelsonians who served in the Great War have been recognised in one place. The ‘Wall of Remembrance’ is a project 20 years in the making after Eileen Thawley and Sid Daughtrey first started manually recording the names of those who had died, by scouring the cemeteries around the region. The 10-metre banner now features 3670 local names who fought, and the 680 who died, in WW1. It acknowledges with gratitude, the experience and sacrifice of these people.

Peter Milward, who helped with the project, says it was about bring families back together. Many brothers who died in the Great War had never been on the same cenotaph for a variety of reasons. "This wall of remembrance was all about service and so for the first time we are showing the 680 who died." Peter was in awe of the women who started the project. "Eileen and Sid started collecting the names of those died by driving around Kohatu, Dovedale and Collingwood and all these places, gathering the names together. And that was all done pre-computer. It's a huge thing, an absolutely

amazing thing to do." The council will string the wall across Selwyn Place for the anniversary of the Armistice which takes place on Sunday, November 11. The celebrations will see "Histrionics" present their new play "Armistice at Compiegne” based on the actual signing of the Armistice in a railway carriage in France 100 years ago. An art installation created using thousands of flax poppies will be unveiled by artists and the local community. The event will be held on the first weekend of the popular Upper Trafalgar St closure, where cars are excluded to create expanded outside eating and drinking areas.

The Nelson Centre of Music and Arts was bursting at the seams for this year’s Diwali Festival. The Hindu community gathered together in a flamboyant evening of music, dance and colour on Sunday to celebrate the annual festival of lights.

The traditional festival symbolises the triumph of light over dark, good over evil, knowledge over ignorance. Hanuman, who along with his wife Prema, had a hand in organising this year’s festival says it is traditionally celebrated in a variety of ways in different parts of the world. He says that, previously, the festival had been celebrated at NMIT but they hadn’t heard

about anything being organised this year, so decided to take it on themselves. “We’re really into creating more community. Punjabi, Indian, Fijian Indian and Kiwis, among others, all came together and that’s what it’s about - really bringing everyone together.” Hanuman thought about 20 people were asked to wait until others left the venue, as it was full.

The evening offered an array of both Indian and Nepali dance performances with both traditional and fusion mantra music followed by a traditional meal. Susan Vather arrived at the festival around 6.30pm with her family, but they were turned away. “We came and were told the NCMA was at full capacity and they couldn’t let anyone else in.”

She hoped that next year they chose a bigger venue or a different location. Hanuman says they will definitely look at a larger space next year but says they would like to continue to support NCMA. “We might look at using the auditorium, but we will definitely need a larger space than this year, especially if we advertise it, which we didn’t really do this year.”

Early electioneering claims at NCC: Those Nelson city ratepayers that no doubt blew up when they read Acting Mayor Ian Barker’s statement defending the poor performance of Nelson City Council should go easy on Ian. After all, who would want to look back at the trail of debris left behind by Ian and his obviously out-oftouch cohorts mentioned in last week’s front page item. The following calamities should remind them – Maitai walkway, Trafalgar Park seating, Trafalgar centre fiasco, new unnecessary Trafalgar Centre carpark, relocation of small bore rifle club, unknown amount spent on Saxton Stadium and ratepayer funds allowed to be distributed to community organisations by dubiously using the likes of the Regional Development Board to distribute the mon-

ey. The ballpark total of all the above is in excess of $15.5M. The disappearance off the radar screen of the Everyman fraud issue is something that ratepayers are concerned about and, of course, the continual bailout of the Brook Street sanctuary is something that should have been addressed long ago. To be fair, it would appear from records that the Works Committee under Chairman Walker, is trying very hard to carry out its responsibilities but is often found struggling to compete with demands from activities outside its core. Ian has also watched the Audit and Risk committee approve of massive amounts of un-budgeted money in the full knowledge that the Annual Plan had placed caps on certain projects. Of course, if he ever happens to visit Stoke township he will see on Greenmeadows the latest monument to NCC’s lack of control. This example,

ex-wife has sought a restraining order after receiving threats from prison. There is no justification for allowing this dishonest, violent convicted drug trafficker to stay in New Zealand. This appalling immigration decision follows Labour and the Greens opposition to two important bills from National on the drug problems facing our communities. I am a member of the Justice Select Committee hearing submissions on the Psychoactive Substances Bill that would toughen the law on these synthetic drugs. The coroner advised us that there have been 45 deaths from these drugs in the last year and

St Johns are reporting 30 callouts a week. We heard heartbreaking stories of teenagers getting hooked, their battles to get clean, dealers hounding them for sales and their subsequent deaths. I also strongly support innovative education programmes that help give our young people the skills and wisdom to avoid drug

use. However we are being naïve in going soft on those who peddle and profit from the misery of these drugs. Drug abuse is a significant factor in so many of our social problems like family violence, welfare dependency, child neglect, suicide and the epidemic around mental health. We need to get serious about stopping supply, preventative education as well as treatment and rehabilitation. We also need to send a clear message that happiness does not come in a bottle or a bong.

The 30th edition of the Nelson Pine Industries Nelson Tasman Chamber of Commerce Business Awards was celebrated by one of its biggest ever turnouts. Five hundred people packed Nelson’s Trafalgar Centre to celebrate business excellence in the region, with Stoke-based Orange Dog winning the supreme award. The night also featured the addition of two new members to the chamber’s hall of fame – Chris Bowater and the late Terry McCashin. Both men were recognised for their long-standing commitment and involvement with the chamber, the business community and

the wider Nelson Tasman community. Nelson Tasman Chamber of Commerce acting CEO Ru Collin says the awards evening was a wonderful reflection of the region’s diverse and thriving business community. "We’re very proud of the 30-year history of the Awards. The evening itself is always a great opportunity to celebrate the great things that business does for our community. Judges described the entrants as "caring as much for our people as they do their bottom line”.

Former boarders, local dignitaries and faculty were all present as the historic boarding house reopened its doors last week. Headmaster Gary O'Shea says it was a momentous occasion for the school. In April 2017, the Nelson College

Board of Trustees announced the decision to proceed with the refurbishment of Rutherford. He says the board showed tremendous courage and vision to commence with the multi-million-dollar restoration project. It has taken five years and more than $3 million of school funds to renovate the buildings, which were constructed in the 1930s after the main school building was irreparably damaged in the 1929 Murchison Earthquake. Gary says boarding is part of what makes Nelson College so special and Rutherford House is a testament to how important boarding is within the school. The board conducted an extensive review which brought back several options including selling, bulldozing and walking away. Board chairman Dennis Christian says it would have been easy to shut the houses and that it was a significant decision to refurbish Rutherford and Barnicoat. "Demand for boarding has declined nationally but a renewed focus on providing appropriate opportunities and facilities has seen that trend begin to reverse." He says boarding is just one aspect of the school's vision to enhance the experience for students

at Nelson College. Built in 1931, Rutherford House is named after one of the College’s most distinguished Old Boys, Nobel Laureate, Ernest Rutherford (1887-1889). Rutherford House was one of two boarding houses commissioned by the Board of Governors following the 1929 earthquake. Laying of the Foundation Stone of Rutherford House took place on 25 November, 1930, by Nelson MP, and Minister of Education, Harry Atmore. He said the new “earthquake proof ” houses were designed in accordance with modern scientific requirements. The boarding house comes equipped with high-speed internet, heating and luxury furnishings - a far cry from the army-like

Former boarders have spoken about the rigid, military-style culture of the past. Students were even trained in the ways of war, regularly travelling to Trentham to learn to handle machine guns. There was a hierarchy in the house that boarders had to adhere to. New arrivals were quizzed on the members of the First XV and would be caned whether

or not they could name the whole team. First year boys were also expected to clean the boots of the First XV in a system known as ‘fagging.’ Young ones who played up would be strung up by their pants on the boiler pipes. Boarders in the 50s endured bitterly cold winters as only thin canvas curtains separated them from the subzero temperatures outside. There has always been a strict 'no girls' policy in the house

but that hasn’t stopped the boys sneaking a few in over the years. One boy was expelled in the 1970s after he was caught with his lady on the stairs. One former boarder says the ‘rough and tough’ lifestyle helped set him straight from the start. Then, of course, there was the punishment from the teachers. Certain masters would not be messed with due to their skill with the cane. They were known for their ability to hit the same spot to inflict maxi-

An exciting one-off spectacle is taking place in Nelson-Tasman this month. The Vintage Car Club of New Zealand is holding a National Veteran Rally and all of the cars are 100 years old or more. A ‘dream’ exhibition for Inge Kate Russell

It’s been 40 years in the making, but Nelson contemporary artist

Inge Stirling finally has her firstever public art exhibition. Over the years, Inge has only sold her works privately - until now.

Her exhibition of 13 paintings started at Morri Street Café last Sunday and will run until 1 December. Inge says she found happiness in creating art at an early age. “I’ve always dreamed of having my own exhibition. When I was seven, I used to put my artworks on my bedroom wall and charge my parents 10 cents to see them.” Originally from The Netherlands, Inge moved to New Zealand in 1990 and settled in Nelson in 2005 after living in Wellington. She says when she first moved to Nelson, she was put off exhibiting her work. "I was told my artwork was ‘more Wellington style’ which sort of knocked my confidence.” But after her marriage ended, Inge found solace in painting. “I had all this inspiration - I needed to get things out.” After Inge

Nelson’s superstar bowls duo has been crowned champions of champions. Shannon McIlroy and Jo Edwards have firmly stamped their mark as two of the world’s best singles exponents by taking out the 2018 World Champion of Champion Singles titles in Sydney. In blistering heat, both Shannon and Jo stormed their way to the silverware. Jo, who won gold at the Commonwealth Games earlier this year, defeated Malaysia’s Alyani Jamil in the women’s final at the St Johns Park Bowling Club in New South Wales.

She was able to secure a 10-7, 10-3 victory in the contest to become the first player to win the event on two occasions. A commanding performance in the second set saw Jo stride out to a comfortable lead, a lead she failed to relinquish as she coasted to a straight-sets win to take out gold. Jo progressed after beating Tammy Tham of Singapore 10-1, 10-2 in her semi. Her maiden victory at the tournament came back in 2011 when she triumphed in Hong Kong. Jo now boasts 12 majors, making her the most successful competitor in bowls history. Meanwhile, Shannon ensured double success for New Zealand

Shannon says it was a very proud moment for him. “It took a lot of games to win to just make it to the event then to play another 15 games on top is pretty massive.” He says every international event is tough. “The players are so good these days compared to 10 years ago, so you have to be on your game to win.” The world champion says to be the only player to have held the world’s and world champ of champs at the same time is a huge achievement. “I’m absolutely stoked that I’m the person to achieve it.”

The announcement of the 2019 Super Rugby squads was a relief for Leicester Faingaanuku in more ways than one. Having joined the union at just 15, Leicester was the youngest signing in Tasman Rugby history. Now, he continues his meteoric rise with the nine-time Super Rugby champion Crusaders. The 18-year-old put pen to paper three weeks ago but had to keep the signing under wraps. “Knowing I was going to be playing Super next season was tough to keep inside.” When the squads were made public last week, the 102kg utility could finally break the news to his family and friends. “It felt so good to tell everyone, it still feels unreal, though.” He says he will be star struck to rub shoulder with his idols. Having spent some time in Crusaders pre-season camp, Leicester says he was always leaning toward the franchise. “They are a champion side and to develop as a player down there is an opportunity any kid would

The former Nelson College students says it is a dream come true for him and his family. “To do what I love as a job and play rugby for the next few years as a living is unreal.” He says he plans to be a sponge once in the Crusaders environment. “I will just look to learn off them and pick their brains as much as I can.” Leicester, who played for the New Zealand schools’ team as a year 12 and at the World Cup earlier this year, has strong rugby roots.

His father, Malakai, played for Tonga at the 1999 Rugby World Cup and his brother, Tima is a regular in the Mako starting XV this season. Including Leicester, twenty of the 2018 Mako squad picked up Super Rugby contracts for next season as well a couple of former favourites returning to the country. Marty Banks will re-join the Highlanders, where he became something of a cult figure, while James Marshall, who was part of the Hurricanes' 2016 title-winning squad, returns from overseas to link up with the ‘Canes again.

SportS TENNIS: The Lucas Cup will remain in Nelson for another year. Nelson pipped its Marlborough rivals 9-7 at the Nelson Tennis Club on Sunday. The tennis was tantalizingly tight and if Marlborough Tennis Association managed to win the last mixed doubles to even the scores, a count back of games would have been required. However, Nelson held off the Marlburians to defend its title in thrilling fashion. RUGBY: The Tasman Mako haven’t had to look far for their 2019 coaching team. The departure of head coach Leon MacDonald following the Mako’s 2018 Mitre 10 Cup campaign meant a reshuffle was required at the top of the Tasman coaching tree. Fortunately, the right men for the job were close at hand. Next season the Mako head coaching role will be shared by Andrew Goodman (36) and Clarke Dermody (38), both assistant coaches to MacDonald this year. Goodman is an assistant coach at the Crusaders while Dermody has been the set piece coach at the Highlanders since 2014. The co-coaches will continue their Super Rugby roles before joining

forces in the Top of the South for the 2019 Mako campaign. They will be assisted by Shane Christie who, like Goodman, was a previous Mako captain and also part of MacDonald’s coaching team this season. Christie will have responsibility for the forwards. SEVENS: The Tasman sevens circuit kicked off on Saturday with Marist and Motueka drawing first blood for the season. Marist A claimed the men’s title at the tournament staged at Renwick Domain on Saturday, proving too hot for Kahurangi in the final, winning 17-5. Meanwhile, Motueka High Senior beat their fellow Moteka High Girls combination to take out the women’s final 26-12. Buller beat Moutere 23-17 to place third and fourth respectively in the women’s grade, while Waimea Old Boys downed Wanderers 22-19 to claim third in the men’s section. In the men’s semis the slick Marist A combination thrashed Waimea Old Boys 38-0 while Kahurangi got up 27-7 over Wanderers to book their place in the decider. The Bowl final was won by Riwaka who beat Buller 24-20, while Central won the Plate and finished fifth after downing hosts Renwick 2612. Next week the sevens action shifts to Motueka for the second tournament in the annual series.

Jonty Dine Claudia Green clean-bowled one of her sporting heroes with just her seventh delivery in first-class cricket. The Nelson seamer made her Central Hinds debut against Otago last month and in her second over managed to castle superstar Suzie Bates who had her half century in sight. “It was pretty special,” Claudia says. “I was so excited and didn’t believe it happened at first, a pretty good one to have as your maiden wicket.” Claudia finished with figures of 1/10 off her two overs but couldn’t stop Central going down to the Southerners by 23 runs. Despite her dream debut, the Hinds have made a disastrous start to its T20 campaign, losing all five fixtures to date. All week the weather reports threatened showers on the annual Milestone Homes Top of the South fireworks display on Saturday night. But sunny Nelson lived up to its reputation as other tracks around the country succumbed to wind and rain. The huge crowd weren’t left waiting for long as the fireworks started early on the track. The Streetstocks were into it from the get-go. Shannon Marr lost steering, putting Steve Thomas hard into the wall with others caught up in the melee before even crossing the start line. Then it was the turn of the T.Q’s. Two rollovers increased their lead in the rollover tally, firstly 58n Daniel Porter going belly up with a flat rear tyre before the end of his first lap. But that was outclassed by a spectacular wall climb by Darkie Armstrong in the final race when he clipped the rear tyre when trying to pass a car which sent him flying out towards the wall, throwing him up the concrete, rolling along
