went, it was exactly what we wanted.” With the first fashion show under their belt, the High Low girls are looking forward to growing High Low. “We’re very excited to have a fashion weekend in Nelson and to keep making it bigger and bringing high fashion to Nelson,” says Sarah. Local talents Matt Costello and Lucy Fitzgerald stole their show with their labels Stelloco and Lucy Georgina. A student at Nelson College for Girls before studying fashion and setting up
her own label locally, Lucy debuted her feminine and classic style with her Wild Flower collection, as well as providing a sneak peek of her upcoming winter Mix & Meander collection. “I was super proud to see my designs on the runway, a lot of people commented on how feminine and cohesive the pieces were which was what I was going for, the whole thing was a great success.” Lucy says having a Nelson Fashion Weekend is amazing. “It’s such an awesome opportunity for Nelson to have something special of its own, especially since we lost WOW.”

After the earthquake, Nelson mayor Rachel Reese asked her deputy, Paul Matheson, to investigate if Nelson could host the ferries. He says his investigations didn’t last long. “Port Nelson were right onto it so I just left them to it. But the council would be supportive under the circumstances.” He says whether the ferries come to Nelson or not, the region is in for a huge summer. “We’re expecting some pretty heavy tourism figures. And I don’t know if we’re ready for it – last year was big enough.” Paul says freedom campers in Montgomery car park led to complaints from nearby businesses, but this year could be worse. He says the council will need to be open to allowing freedom campers on cityowned land if there is a big influx of visitors this summer. “We can probably move faster than most [in opening up areas for freedom campers] and if we find 500 in Montgomery, we’ll have to find somewhere for them – fast.”

Developments for Tahunanui

Tahunanui Drive is getting a shake-up with two major developments planned for 2017. Manor Property Services (MPS) are moving from their Vanguard St premises to the old Superior Spares wrecking yard next to Ta-
hunanui School. MPS Director Mark Forbes says the old buildings will be moved off the site within the next few weeks, with the development to start in about a month’s time. The new design and build, which is set to open in April/May 2017, will also be home to David Spence

Kitchens, which is moving from its current St Vincent St location. Mark says they purchased the land 12 months ago and they have been busy doing the design and getting compliance in place. He says Tahunanui Drive is the “ideal” location for MPS. “It has a good profile and it’s cen-
tral for our 35 staff,” he says. Meanwhile, The House Renovators on the corner of Tahunanui Drive and Green St is set to close in the New Year, and become a Night ‘n Day store. The late night convenience store has 50 franchises around New Zealand, including one in Stoke
and one in Nelson. A spokesperson from Night ‘n Day says they have not confirmed a timeframe for development yet, while a spokesperson from The House Renovators says they will be holding a closing down auction early next year, with a date yet to be confirmed.
The House Renovators store on Tahunanui Dr is set to become a Night ‘n Day dairy.

Cafe runners refuse to pay Andrew Board Two women who “dined and dashed” from a Nelson cafe told the waiter who chased after them that they would say he assaulted them if he called police, it is alleged. The two women sat at an outside table at Columbus Cafe in Morrison Square last Wednesday and demanded table service. A female staff member told them they didn’t do table service and they had to order at the counter. The women refused and finally a male waiter came and took their order. After eating the women took off, but the waiter chased them and caught up with one of the women on Selwyn Place. The other escaped to the Cathedral gardens. Columbus owner Ian Brassfield says the waiter told the woman to pay for their meal but she told him that she wouldn’t and if he called police she would say he assaulted her. The European waiter didn’t know if he was allowed to restrain the woman and she took off again. The confrontation was captured by a member of the public on their

Ian says he was furious that people would be so brazen and wanted to alert other cafe and restaurant owners that this was happening. “I want them caught because if they’ll do it to us they’ll do it to others, too.” Ian says he’s also lodged a complaint with police.

The warning comes after an elderly person lost nearly 40,000 in a telephone fraud scam whereby offenders were targeting residents of a local retirement village. The offenders would have gotten away with the cash, had it not been for some clever work by the victim’s bank’s fraud unit. Morley’s manager Ian Robinson says the alarms were activated when the window was smashed but the thieves had left the premises with the bikes, which have a combined value of about $8000, before staff arrived.

Woodworkers donate to Christmas appeal Members of the Nelson Guild of Woodworkers are putting their skills to good use, donating handmade wooden toys to the Salvation Army Christmas Appeal. The group is mainly made up of hobbyist woodworkers, although there are some professionals amongst them, who have a passion for all types of woodwork, from cabinet and furniture making to toy making. As well as working in their own workshops at home, the guild also meets once a month at Nayland College’s technology rooms to discuss the art of woodworking and learn from demonstrations. “Each year the guild has a challenge for members, they’re usually given a piece of wood from the guild suppliers and told to make something. This year we just decided to do something that was charitable and thought the best thing would be to make some toys and then find a worthy benefactor,” says guild president Bill Filmer. Around 20 toys were crafted by hand including trolleys, puzzles and toy trucks. After being on display in the Richmond library, they were handed over to Salvation Army staff on Monday morning. “Wooden toys last forever, very rarely do you see wooden toys breaking or falling to pieces and, because individuals have put love into the process of making them, I think they’ll be very well received,” says Captain Kenneth Walker of the Nelson Tasman Salvation Army. “I think it’s wonderful that people would do that. They’ve created something of value and of beauty and we want someone to enjoy that.” While this is the first time members of the guild have worked together to create items to donate, as members of other organisations such as Lions, they are often involved in community projects. “As a guild, I thought it was about time that we actually promoted ourselves, because a lot of us are getting older and we’re hoping this will help to get new people interested in coming along,” says Bill. “They don’t have to be competent woodworkers because we all learn from each other, that’s the idea of the guild.” For those interested in learning more about the guild. visit www.ngow.org.nz

Kate Russell Nelson man Nathan Sharp is chuffed to be carrying on the legacy of his uncle’s muchloved 1930 Model A Ford. He won the car at his late Uncle Dennis and Aunt Margaret King’s estate auction on Saturday, which was humming with collectors, car enthusiasts and interested onlookers. “I’ve always been interested in them, always loved the Model A’s,” he says. “I’ve had my eye on it, and to be honest, it’s a bit easier to drive than the Model T’s,” he laughs. while the other two cars, a 1913 Ford T Racer sold for $25,000 to a Blenheim buyer, and the 1915 Ford T went for nearly $30,000 to a Christchurch buyer. A rare Plume petrol pump got snapped up by a Napier buyer for over $5,000, while an old Johnson motor-car spare tyre that had been to Antarctica sold for just over
$1000. Auctioneer John Walker says he was “absolutely thrilled” with the turnout. “It was a great crowd with people from all over New Zealand attending, from Winton to Auckland,” he says. “There were a lot of rare items, and we sold everything. We had a lot of happy vendors.”

New sport and rec committee get to work Kate Russell
The newly-formed Nelson City Council sports and recreation committee met for the first time on Thursday. Chaired by second-term councillor Tim Skinner, it is the very first committee formed in recent history specifically dedicated to focus on sports and recreation in Nelson. The committee was first mooted by mayor Rachel Reese back in March, but she backed down from the idea two months later after resistance from some councillors. Now with a new term, and fresh faces, the committee, which includes Rachel Reese, Mike Rutledge [deputy chair], Ian Barker, Mel Courtney, Kate Fulton, Brian McGurk and Stuart Walker, is in full swing. Tim says a committee specifically dedicated to focus on sports and recreation will Cr Tim be a point of contact and a Skinner. “listening ear” for residents and sporting groups. “Prior to this, sports and recreation matters were included under the very broad umbrella of the community services committee and there had been a very strong request from the community, sporting clubs and organisations for this committee to exist over the last council term,” he says. The committee is also more than just about formal sports – it encompasses reserves, parks, camps, walkways, contemplative places, recreational cycleways, as well as both formal and informal sports and leisure activities. Another thing Tim would like to see happen is the installation of an artificial football pitch at Neale Park or Saxton, saying it would help take the pressure off struggling football pitches in Nelson. Also, with a boom of new and growing sports clubs in Nelson, providing more club rooms is high on the agenda.

Yes, I can remember something being set up in the children's ward years ago and it catered not only for preschool age but also for ages up to 16 years. So good to hear this news. Juliet Leaupepe. The Nelson Symphony Orchestra celebrated it 50th Anniversary with a concert on Saturday. The evening concert at the Old St John’s had the sounds of overtures, symphonies and soloists flowing through the building and out into the street as loyal supporters of the orchestra filled every seat in the old church. The orchestra began the evening with Reznicek’s Donna Diana overture before moving into a five piece anniversary Haiku by John Rimmer, Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue with piano soloist Buz Bryant-Greene, Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto in D major with trumpet soloist Raffaele Bandoli and Symphony No.1 by Sibelius. Initially founded in 1966, the orchestra was comprised of 30 players who gave their first concert in May 1966. Two members of this group remain in the orchestra today, violinist Virginia Ward and
double bass player Allan Hunter. “I came to Nelson in 1964 and was fortunate to meet Richard Harris, he was responsible for getting the orchestra going with Frank Clayton Oxley and John Davis and they persuaded me to take up my violin,” says Virginia. “It’s been a huge part of my life, playing all these wonderful orchestral pieces with so many other musicians and I’ve been very privileged on occasions to play piano concertos as a solo pianist with this orchestra, so it’s been a very exciting journey and I’ve seen a lot of people come and go.” Double bass player Allan Hunter remembers being blown away after receiving an invitation to join the orchestra as a 19-year-old, and 50 years later he echoes Virginia’s experience. “It’s been a big part of my life for fifty years, and it’s a massive milestone to reach, we’re only 25 years younger than the New Zealand Navy!”

Kindy kids get brushing Locally Owned and Operated

Kate Russell Good tooth-brushing habits are starting early at three Nelson Tasman kindergartens. Victory Square, Nelson South and Laura Ingram Kindergartens are participating in a two year oral health project, which has been launched by Nelson Marlborough Health and the Nelson Tasman Kindergarten Association, with the support of Soroptimist International of Nelson, who has funded a two-year supply of toothbrushes and toothpaste for each kindergarten. The programme, which has already been running in Marlborough for the last two years, not only aims to improve the oral health of children, but support staff and families to understand and promote regular brushing, healthy food and drink choices, and enrolment in Nelson’s free Community Oral Health Service. Victory Square Kindergarten teacher Luise Swift says they have a tooth-brushing station set up, and every child has their own brush. She also says it’s not just about tooth-brushing - they are also educating children and families about healthy, sugar-free snacks and drinks, and make tooth-brushing songs part of their mat times. “The kids are now into the routine of brushing their teeth when they arrive at kindergarten, and we’ve had a lot of parents doing it here with them, too,” says Luise. “It's busy, but what we are getting out of it is worth it.” Esme Palliser, Oral Health Educator with Nelson Marlborough Health’s Community Oral Health Service, says their goal is to teach children how to care for their teeth and prevent decay, and also encourage greater awareness and involvement by families. They have also taught kindergarten teachers how to recognise the early signs of decay so that children can then be referred to clinics. “Teachers are hugely influential – if anyone can make tooth-brushing a fun, regular part of a child’s day, they can, as well as encourage healthy habits among the families that they see,” says Esme. By the age of five, 42 per cent of children in the Nelson Marlborough region have some decay, and it is one of the most common diseases in young children in the region. “People might not be aware just how devastating this can be for children. Baby teeth are very important and essential for the development of adult teeth,” says Esme. “Without healthy baby teeth, young children are at risk of not being able to eat properly, speak properly and their self-esteem and socialisation can really suffer.”

Kaikoura earthquake Mayor’s message Mayor Rachel Reese would like to thank all those involved in the response following the Kaikoura earthquake. It has been heart-warming to see so many people throughout the region put their hand up to help our close neighbours in Marlborough and North Canterbury. There has been such a great response from the community, from Civil Defence staff and volunteers and Council staff. I've seen first-hand the willingness of others to help those who have been affected by this earthquake. There is still a lot of work to be done in the recovery phase for Kaikoura and the surrounding areas and my thoughts are with those who are a part of this phase. Events like these are a reminder that natural disasters can happen at any time, and Civil Defence advice is to make sure you have a plan so you and your family can get through in an emergency. Feedback sought on Brook Recreation Reserve reclassification Council is seeking feedback from the public on the proposal to change the classification of land within the area commonly referred to as the “Brook Recreation Reserve” from Recreation Reserve to Local Purpose Reserve (Recreation). This proposal has come about as a result of the consultation on the draft Brook Recreation Reserve Management Plan. The proposed change to reserve classification doesn’t alter the vision or any of the objectives or policies laid out in the draft Management Plan that has been adopted in principle by Council (and is available on the website, nelson.govt.nz). It seeks to make sure the classification is the most appropriate for the various land uses that have been identified as part of the consultation process. A change from Recreation Reserve to Local Purpose Reserve (Recreation) will offer more flexibility in what activities can take place within the reserve. In Recreation Reserves, leases may only be granted for activities which are necessary for the use and enjoyment of that reserve. This may be interpreted as preventing leases for activities in the Reserve that support activities on other land, such as the adjacent Brook Waimarama Sanctuary or any tourism operation relying on its clients using other land areas. The Local Purpose Reserve (Recreation) status would allow for leases which are not wholly reliant on activities within the reserve. Any lease would however have to comply with any approved management plan for the reserve. Another difference is that local purpose reserves
are not required to have a management plan in place. However, Council believes it is good practice to have management plans for our reserves and proposes to approve the plan it previously consulted on and has already adopted in principle for this area. In either case, Council would not need to publicly notify a proposed lease as long as the activity was contemplated in the approved Management Plan. However, any proposed activities, for example including new structures, would still be required to meet the requirements of all relevant legislation, such as the Resource Management Act. Following this further feedback process, Council will then make its final decision on whether to reclassify the land or not. Emano East Reserve revocation Welcome to the first of our monthly Nature’s Hero awards – a series recognising and rewarding people who go the extra mile to do their bit for Nelson’s nature. In the few years since Denis Blomquist moved to Nelson, he has dedicated his untiring efforts to many conservation activities including planting, weeding, trapping, track building, and rubbish collection. Recently, Denis started another project at the Haven Holes, to create a habitat for ground dwelling coastal birds. Denis also regularly collects rubbish on the site. Through his involvement with Friends of the Maitai, Denis is often found planting, weeding, and trapping among the native trees at Groom Creek. Denis believes that with a few people working together, great
progress can be made. ”The wonderful thing about this work,” says Denis, “is that you can plant a tree and in a year or two see it grow and provide habitat for wildlife.” Both Nelson Nature and Project Maitai would like to congratulate Denis on being our Nature’s Hero for November. His commitment helps make Nelson an even better place. Council proposes to ask the Minister of Conservation to remove the reserve status of the Emano East Reserve. The steep contour of the property limits its ability to be used as a park and there are already a number of alternatives located nearby. The property consists of 7,664m2 with steep contours, rising from the Emano Street frontage.

The road has been the alternative route for mountain bikers while the pipeline section of the Dun Mountain Trail remains closed due to slips. They will need to plan a different route for the three weeks of the closure. Those who want to use the Maitai Dam car park as a base for walks or picnics will also need to make other arrangements. The bridge is being constructed off site to make the replacement process as speedy as possible. This is not related to recent earthquake activity but is a planned upgrade to improve safe access for all vehicles, including logging trucks. Second Hand Sunday is here again The next Second Hand Sunday on 11 December from 10am is an opportunity to de-clutter and freshen up your home before Christmas. It’s a great way of minimising waste in our city and giving pre-loved items a new home.
Nelson City Council is collaborating with Countdown supermarkets to hold a “Drain Art Event” to remind people that fish and marine life are affected by anything other than rain going down the drain. From 9am – 12pm on Wednesday 7 December, Nelson school children will create art murals around the stormwater drains at each of the three Countdown supermarket carparks – St. Vincent Street and Halifax Street in Nelson and Main Road, Stoke. All three supermarket sites are on or near waterways, and Countdown staff will be on hand to reward students with prizes, and hand out refreshments and

Contribution to community earns national awards Two Nelsonians, Peter Crins and Jane Bealing, have been presented with national awards from Neighbourhood Support New Zealand for their outstanding contribution to the community.

Jane is the co-ordinator of a Neighbourhood Support group in The Wood. She received a gold innovation award for galvanising her neighbourhood to develop a plan for dealing with natural disasters. Jane and her husband John got neighbours together to discuss ways they could prepare for disasters such as earthquakes. They drew up a list of skills and resources in the neighbourhood that would be useful in a disaster, such as ladders, chainsaws, and people with nursing or first aid skills. Jane also obtained a map of properties in the neighbourhood from Council, and marked where household amenities such as power and water mains were located. This meant people could turn off neighbours’ water or power in the event of an emergency such as an earthquake. Peter, a senior constable with Nelson Bays police, received a gold police officer award for services above and beyond the call of duty. Peter was instrumental in setting up Neighbourhood Support Nelson 10 years ago and has been actively involved in the organisation ever since. He has served on the committee for 10 years, including five years as chairman. Peter has also provided a lot of practical advice and support to Neighbourhood Support groups on security and safety issues,
and has ensured that groups have been kept informed by the police on crime trends and crime prevention strategies. This is the first time Neighbourhood Support New Zealand has given out national awards, with only six awards given across the country.
Council’s commitment to Nelson’s neighbourhoods Nelson City Council has had a long relationship with Neighbourhood Support, which is something Council’s Chair of Community Services Committee, Gaile Noonan, is committed to continuing. “Neighbourhood Support plays an important role in creating safer, friendlier and more connected Nelson neighbourhoods and I’m pleased to see two Nelsonians recognised for their invaluable efforts and offering practical solutions in this space.” Council has provided $10,400 to neighbourhood support over the 2015/16 and 2016/17 community investment fund rounds. This support has enabled the organisation to grow its number of groups to one of the largest per capita of any city in the country. Council continues to work with Neighbourhood Support and other organisations that are interested in neighbourliness, resilience and safety across the city.

Community Youth Volunteer Awards Nelson City Council annually sponsors the Community Youth Volunteer Award at local high schools. The award is presented at prize giving and is to acknowledge the voluntary contribution a student has made to the community within the last 12 months, as identified by each school, and judged by a panel. Sui Sung Cen Hrang, Nelson College for Girls Sui Sung, has supported many refugees, through Nelson College for Girls, as well as welcoming new refugees and organising cultural festivals. She regularly volunteers as an interpreter for teachers at her school, as well as at Victory Primary and at the Victory Community Centre assisting with interpreting for Community Bays Law. Four times a week, Sui Sung volunteers at Victory Primary where she is a teacher aide and a buddy. Sui Sung often gives up her Saturday to be a tutor for the Chin community. She is a member of the Refugee youth group where she is the Trip Leader and provides a youth voice. She has been involved in extensive additional community volunteer work, such as fundraising, sports events, cultural events and concerts.

Keegan served as the Nelson Youth MP in 2016, as well as being a dedicated and active member of the Nelson Youth Council. He was also a member of the NMDHB Youth Wellness group, volunteering his time to help improve health services provided to young people in the region. On top of this, over the last three years, Keegan has volunteered at Nelson Central School and Nelson College as a mentor, classroom assistant and tutor. This commitment and dedication resulted in Keegan receiving the Nelson Tasman Youth Community Spirit Award. Keegan is a great voice for youth development, youth mentoring and youth issues.
Fynn volunteers at Bridge Valley Adventure Centre in the holidays where he leads a cabin for a week. He also mentors year 11 students, as a leader of a hub at Unite Church. This year, he completed the ‘Youth Emergency Services’ Programme, where he volunteered for the Nelson Rescue Helicopter. He is a valuable member of the Friends of the Maitai and attends regular plant care Fridays. On top of this, he is a member of the Nelson Green Party, where he assists with promotion, as well as being a dedicated member of the Nelson Youth Council.
Fighting accidental discharges Recently, a resource consent application was made by the Nelson Regional Sewerage Business Unit (NRSBU) regarding the discharge of untreated wastewater onto land or into the marine and fresh water environment. This consent, a requirement under the Nelson Resource Management Plan, is for accidental discharge, and not intentional discharge of wastewater. Approval has not been sought to deliberately discharge wastewater to our marine and fresh water environments. Accidents do happen and whilst Nelson’s sewerage reticulation system is designed to provide a reliable level of service to customers, there will always be incidents or circumstances where the sewerage system could and does become inundated resulting in a spill. These spills have, in the past, been as a direct result of circumstances beyond the control of Council, including pump blockages (people flushing things down the sewers that they shouldn’t), stormwater infiltration due to high/ extreme rainfall events and power outages which affect the ability to pump sewage. The resource consent applied for is more than just an application for accidental discharge – it requires detailed strategies for what is planned to prevent discharges. A similar resource consent was applied for by Nelson City Council and granted in 2012. A feature of the consent is the requirement for Council to reduce overflows from pump stations over the next 20 years. With respect to the NRSBU pump stations at Saxton Road, Songer Street and the Airport, all are supported by automated power generators that kick in when there

is a power failure to ensure uninterrupted service at the pump stations. There continues to be regional investment to improve our sewerage systems, and the NRSBU continues to work to manage these in order to protect the environment and provide the level of service required by the community. No one wants accidental overflows, and this consent shows how the NRSBU plans to minimise the impact of any unforeseen circumstances.
Work by Nelson City Council towards reducing accidental overflows When it rains in Nelson (especially in heavy rain) stormwater can find its way into the sewer system. If the flows are high enough, the pumping stations can’t cope and sewage overflows can result. A dye testing process is now starting in the CBD to find out where stormwater is entering the sewer system. Over the next few months you will see patches of brightly coloured dye in the Maitai River. The dye used is completely harmless, non-toxic to humans, animals and aquatic life. Council officers will be monitoring the results of the dye testing to help inform future management of both stormwater and wastewater systems. When you see dye in the river it indicates the stormwater connections are operating as they should and there is no cause for concern.

Sea swimmer Bishop Derek Eaton is proof a long hiatus is no barrier for making an impact in your chosen sport late in life. The 75-year-old won the Masters Sportsperson of the Year category at the Nelson Sports Awards at Annesbrook Church on Friday night, thanks to his efforts in the water which now have him ranked in the top five in the world for his age. Derek was the Bishop of Nelson for 16 years and only got back into swimming in 2009 after being posted to Egypt. “I thought I had to do something to stay fit and you can’t really run around Cairo without drawing attention to yourself.” Derek held several age-group pool records as a teenager but left swimming in the 1960s. “It’s never too late to start and I want to accept this award on behalf of all older sports people.

Photo: Supplied/Peter Gibbs. “My inspiration comes from the weekly Port Nelson sea swims which can gather almost 200 people on a Thursday night. “Ocean swimming is one of the fastest growing sports in the world and I never thought I would reach the heights that I have.” Derek thanked his wife and those in the swimming and triathlon community for their support.
“My wife helps me train, and being able to swim stops me getting fat and keeps me off the streets. He also joked about his relationship with God. “A lot of people think that I am helped in the water by some divine intervention but I am here to tell you that help is available to everyone. “I’ve been accused of, when the other competitors aren’t looking, running on water,
but I can assure you I’ve tried it and it doesn’t work.” Stoke paralympic sprinter Liam Malone won Nelson Sports Person of the Year. The hot favourite for the award earned the title after capturing global attention with his two gold medals and a silver medal at the Rio Paralympics. The 22-year-old was in attendance to accept the award.

Big field to compete for SI Stock Car title Jody Scott Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway will host the biggest field of stock cars to race for the South Island Title in recent years, on Saturday night. Currently 48 cars have entered and it promises to be a tough contest with plenty of top drivers from around the South Island attending. The local boys will be intending on keeping the title here and have 19 cars entered, but it’s going to need clever tactics and plenty of friends to win. Last year’s champion only won it on the final lap and it may come down to that again this time. Tasman Thunder drivers Michael Paynter, Keightly Teece and Brad
Neiman will be the local leading hopes, but may be targets early on. There are plenty of stirrers attending so expect lots of action. There are two qualifying groups with the top 26 racing a three heat final. The club are also hosting the War of the Wings Sprint Car round. These drivers will be keen to get some valuable lap times in before the New Zealand Grand Prix in January. There will be around 20 cars here for the night, including ex three time national modified champion Luke Keegan and former champion Jamie Duff. They will take on the locals Steve and Brett Sullivan, Kris Gerard, Jason Ritter, Greg Teece and Jason Smith. It’s shaping up to be a cracker of a final meeting before Christmas.

Veteran Nelson lawn bowler Jo Edwards says she will relish the pinnacle of her sport – a world championships – being held in Christchurch from November 29 to December 11. The 46-year-old from the United Club is part of a strong Nelson presence in the New Zealand Black Jacks bowls team that will take on the rest of the world at Christchurch’s Burnside Bowling Club. She will be joined by fellow Nelsonians Val Smith, Ali Forsyth, Kirsten Edwards and Shannon McIlroy – with all but Shannon being produced by the United Club. “I know there are international journalists coming over for the tournament who want to make a special trip to Nelson just to try to get a feel for why we produce such good lawn bowlers so consistently.” Jo is entering her fourth World Championships, the same as long time team mate and rival, Val. The pair are poised to bring up 500 caps for New Zealand during the event, She has won it all in a sport she

Photo: Supplied. first decided to play “for only one season” in 1992. “Val and I played cricket together, she was in the seventh form and I was in the third form. “We also played soccer and that was our first love, but we decided we’d try bowls and the rest is history.” Jo says she has always rated World Championship success higher
than Commonwealth Games glory, but admits the public probably see it differently. “When I won the Commonwealth Games I got a brass band at Nelson Airport to welcome me home, but when I won the World Championships I got my Mum and a couple of family members.” Jo says having home advantage is a plus as the team, which is in

She says with home advantage there is pressure. “New Zealand has some of the fastest greens in the world, especially compared to the Northern Hemisphere, where they also play a lot indoors. “It’s an advantage being at home but that also raises the stakes.

“People have expectations but then again, as a squad, we have our own expectations and they are high." Jo says she will continue to play for New Zealand as long as the passion remains. The sport is far from professional but Jo says the benefits are still there. “I generally think about my options after a World Championships or Commonwealth Games because you have to be able to commit to another two year cycle. “It does cost a lot for us to go around the world and represent New Zealand but we get treated well, our uniforms are nice which not all countries can say is the case and we are looked after in terms of preparation and comfort." The emergence of sport psychology is one aspect Jo has had to get used to. “When I first started it wasn’t really a thing, but it’s grown in importance and value and I just try to adapt. I’ve found it useful and certainly learnt a lot from it.” Jo is set to move to Brisbane in the New Year which makes the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast all the more appealing.

Zenith defies conditions SporTS to claim Tonga Island race
Rugby: Tasman rugby players Isaiah Miller and Tima Faainganuku will attend a New Zealand Under-20s training camp in Palmerston North next month. Tima impressed in his debut season in the Makos, mostly playing as a winger, while Isaiah impressed at the UC Championships secondary school level this season.

The Rob Greenwood-skippered Zenith took line honours in the Tonga Island Yacht Race on Sunday in conditions he described as "very challenging". Zenith finished the 50 nautical mile race in seven hours and 40 minutes, having battled 40 knot winds which pushed the boat sideways at times and meant crews were working throughout the race. "It was one out of the box," Rob says. "You expect a breeze this time of year, but it was very stiff. "I’m shattered today and can barely walk. "The race began off Nelson with little to no wind, but the strong
westerly which was over much of the country soon took charge." Zenith was second when the boats reached Tonga Island but re-took the lead early on the way back to Nelson and extended it as they crossed the line. "It was a good field of boats and we were very pleased to cross the line first. "The conditions made things quite exciting." Next on the list for Rob and Zenith will be a race around the North Island in February. which is likely to have a big fleet of strong sailors taking on what can be challenging and unpredictable race conditions. Full category results will be known by Wednesday.

SevenS: The Tasman men's sevens side won the South Island regional tournament in Timaru over the weekend. They beat Otago 12-5 in the final and qualified for the national sevens tournament in the process. The Tasman women's team also qualified for the national after finishing third. They beat Southland 33-12 to finish their tournament on a high. CRiCket: Nelson have started their Hawke Cup campaign with a comprehensive innings and 70run win over Marlborough in Blenheim. Nelson declared at 316 for 9 and then skittled Marlborough for 129 and 117. Matt Macquet made 98. MotoRCyCling: The Nelson Motorcycle Club will hold a fundraising race day on December 18 to help raise money following the Kaikoura earthquake. The event will be held at 205 Tadmor-Glenhope Rd. Most senior and junior classes will be open for entries.
