Kate Russell A local supermarket has resorted to taking roadside rubbish bags off the shelves and putting them behind the counter after they became one of their most shoplifted items. The move comes after the bags went up in price on 1 July. In another local store, the cost of a single rubbish bag has increased 30 per cent in the last seven years. Countdown Nelson store manager Lauren Hobson says they had to move the bags due the high number of thefts. “We have had no issues since we have taken them off the shelves.” Rubbish collection in Nelson is operated on a ‘user pays’ system provided by the Nelson City Councilowned contractor, Nelmac. The 65 litre bags, known as ‘Betta-Bags’, are available at supermarkets, Nelson City Council and at Nelmac’s office. They are sold as singles or as a four-pack. Nelmac’s marketing coordinator Nic Stuart says one of the reasons for the bag price hike is due to the increase in Nelson City Council’s dumping fees. In fact, they have been hit with a 34 per cent increase in dumping costs since July. “Due to operational costs increasing we need to account for cost of sales. This also includes, but is not limited to, the cost of providing the right staff, increase in fleet and plant and fuel prices continuously increasing.” Nelson City Council communications manager

Colour craze for a cause Sara Hollyman Nelson kids got colourful to raise money for a young girl fighting cancer on Sunday. Hundreds turned out for the Colour Craze Fun Run at Tahunanui Sports field. Participants chose to run 1km, 3km or 5km around the field to raise money for Emma’s Army – a group
set up to raise funds for the family of Emma Guyer who has recently been diagnosed with her third tumour. As they began their run, participants were hosed down by local firefighters at the start line. Then they were doused with coloured powder by eager volunteers who were stationed around the course.

As they crossed the finish line, the final green powder was thrown at the already rainbow-coloured runners. The fun-run was followed by a Colombian dance demonstration and a colour dance party, in which participants could purchase their own colour bags to throw at each other. The day was a collaborative
effort by Multicultural Nelson Tasman, Girl Guides, Volunteer Nelson and Sport Tasman. Riley Perrott is about to turn 11 so decided to have his birthday party at the funrun. He, along with a group of his friends, ran the 3km course and were front and centre at the dance party.

Rubbish bag price hike NEWS FROM PAGE 1 Paul Shattock confirms there was a “minimal increase” in July to both the York Valley Landfill and Pascoe St Transfer Station prices. “For instance, the charge per tonne of general waste at York Valley increased by $4,” he says. “Nelmac and all other refuse collectors take their kerbside collections directly to the landfill at York Valley … everyone who uses the landfill is subject to the same price increase.” Nelmac currently sells BettaBags as singles for $2.59 or $9.40 for a four pack, which Nic says is “still aligned competitively in terms of product pricing”. “This is our recommended

Meanwhile, Paul says Nelson and Tasman councils are in the process of adopting the Nelson Tasman Waste Management and Minimisation Plan, with public consultation closing in September. “Approximately 62,000 tonnes of waste is taken to local landfill each year and research estimates more than half of that could be dealt with in a better way by being reused, recycled or composted - or avoided altogether. “The plan looks at ways to achieve that change,” says Paul.
Tourist convicted after crash: A visitor from the United States, who planned to tour New Zealand on his motorbike with this wife, drove headon into another car while on the wrong side of the road. Joseph Pezzuti, 59, was convicted of careless use of a motor vehicle causing injury in the Nelson District Court on Monday. He was on the wrong side of the road and collided with a car, causing serious injury to his wife, who was on the back. Pezzuti was due to travel home to the United States on Monday but they will need to wait until she is fit for travel. Nelson home takes out award: A Nelson home has taken out a national category at the Registered Master Builders 2018 House of the Year Awards. The local Coastguard is redoubling its efforts to raise money for a new $1.3 million vessel after it’s revealed that rescues have doubled over the last year. Figures released to the Nelson Weekly show that last year Coastguard saved 19 people by pulling them out of the water and had 54 incidents of assistance. This year, that number has skyrocketed with 44 rescues and 80 incidents of assistance. “There are just so many more boats out on the water,” says local Coastguard member Wayne Ormandy. “We really need a boat that can get out there and do the job.” The current Coastguard boat is 22-years-old and past its prime and the volunteer organisation is in dire need a of a new one. The organisation has already the vessel designed and its jets are ready to go. All they need is to have the boat built. Valued at $1.3 million, the new 11.3m Naiad vessel is almost 3m longer than Coastguard’s current vessel and will be based at Port Nelson.

The boat is also old and unreliable with an inability to handle rough weather. Wayne says they have raised about $300,000 but there is still a long way to go. He says many people don’t realise that Coastguard is a charity, manned by 25 volunteers who are called to incidents around their normal work day. The first four there head out. “Survival time in the water is one hour so time is always of the essence.” The local Coastguard has one
of New Zealand’s largest areas of responsibility – all of Nelson, Tasman and Golden Bay - from Anatori to Stephens Island. It is funded by donations from the Nelson Tasman community and provides a maritime search and rescue safety net for those who find themselves in trouble at sea. “There is no alternative,” Wayne says. “If you get in trouble and Coastguard isn’t around then you are at the mercy of passing vessels. That’s why we need this new boat.” Coastguard plans to double down on its campaign to raise the funds up to Christmas, and then again in the new year.

Troublesome driver reined in Locally Owned and Operated

The driver of a small, red, Toyota Corolla, who has been terrorising the local community with the sound of his car backfiring, has finally been nabbed. It seems he pushed his luck to the limit when the car backfired directly outside the Wakefield Police Station and the driver was consequently pulled over in Spring Grove. The driver of the old hatchback
has been cruising around the region for the last couple of weeks and, according to social media, the public has had enough. With the noise being described as the sound of a gun firing off, the fright of the noise was terrifying for some locals. With online complaints stretching from Wakefield through to Washington Valley and temperatures running high, the public were calling for police action before some people took matters

Stoke vows to fight Kiwibank closure Jonty Dine The elderly community in Stoke is willing to put up "one hell of a fight” to stop the suburb becoming bankless. It was revealed last week that Kiwibank intends to close its branch on Neale Ave in Stoke - a decision that has been met with outrage by locals. About 150 residents attended a community meeting at the Stoke Methodist Church on Friday to protest the decision. Grey Power Nelson president Christine Tuffnell says invitations were sent to executives at Kiwibank, NZ Post and to the Government, all of whom declined. "No-one responsible for the decision will explain the rationale behind the closure.”
Christine says the closure is a catastrophe for the Stoke community. "There's a lot of elderly people here, and nearly a third is probably over 65, so it's quite an old population.” She says, of the 16,000 Nelson Greypower members, only 50 percent have email and 51 per cent still use cheques. Of these members, 16 percent rely on public transport and a further 60 percent require the use of mobility scooters or walkers. Waimea Road changes explained As new developments start to creep in around Waimea Road, we answer the burning questions as to what’s happening with one of Nelson’s busiest arterial routes. Q: Why are there so many diggers on the hill off Waimea Rd? A: A new retirement village is being built on the Port Hills and a new road is being formed in order to provide access to it. The road from Princes Dr is to connect close to the old Bishopdale Pottery site on Waimea Rd, 350m north of Beatson Rd, and will be controlled by a set of traffic lights (which are being paid for by the developer). Q: What is this new retirement village? A: The new $125 million Coastal Views Lifestyle Village is being developed by Questral Corporation and will feature residential units to house up to 300 people, including 180 standalone units, 60 apartments and 50 care beds. A pavilion will also house restaurants, a movie theatre, gym, indoor swimming pool and spa. Q: When did this new road get resource consent? A: Resource consents to allow construction of the new road and intersection on Waimea Rd were granted by the council

Why wasn’t there any public consultation about this? A: Yes, it will go through the Station Reserve. This was a non-notified resource consent, so no public consultation was required in order for council to approve this. NCC say public consultation is required when there are significant adverse effects on the environment but the various traffic reports have concluded the impacts of this road are "no more than minor." Q: But the speed limit on Waimea Road is 70kmh. Won’t a new intersection be unsafe? A: Nelson City Council is looking to seek public feedback to reduce the speed limit on the 1.3km stretch of Waimea Rd
between Market Rd and Beatson Rd to 50kmh. A recent report to council showed there have been six speed-related crashes on the 70kmh stretch of road since 2013. Nelson Police have also raised the issue, saying that over recent months they have been receiving concerns from motorists, pedestrians and cyclists. Subject to approval at the next full council meeting on 13 December, the proposal will go out for public consultation on 14 December and close on 15 February 2019. Q: What is the timeframe for all this work? A: Construction of the new road is underway, and Questral Corporation have estimated that the traffic lights will be installed in the next three months. Work on the first stage of the retirement village is expected to start in 2019.

Awards to showcase forestry heroes Sara Hollyman A group of forestry professionals are spearheading a brand-new event for the region to celebrate those working in a notoriously tough industry. Event founder Nathan Taylor says the region’s forestry industry has a highly-skilled work force and the new Top of the South Forestry Awards are about recognising that. “You’ve got a lot of guys working
on really expensive machinery, and on the same token, there’s a lot of really skilled guys breaking out and felling.” Nathan says the awards are also about attracting young people into the forestry industry, which he says is a real challenge. “Attracting young people into these types of industry is a real challenge. I think it’s highlighted more so in the forestry industry and silviculture.” He says young people are mo-
In the 20 years Nathan’s been involved with forestry he has seen some big changes. “One of the key things is the step from manual labour to mechanisation - getting guys off the hill.” He says the award categories have been developed specifically for the top of the south region, which has a huge mechanical presence. Event manager Prue Younger, who also runs four similar events around the country, says the evening will be about celebrating
all that’s good in the industry. The inaugural event will be held on June 14 at the Trafalgar Centre. Nelson’s home of Harley’s Jonty Dine The world’s most iconic motorcycle brand is setting up shop in Nelson. Filco Farm and Sport has been appointed the home of Harley Davidson for Nelson and the Top of the South. Operations manager Perry Francis says Harley knocked on the door nine months ago as they wanted representation in the region, and now “here we are”. Perry says they are privileged to be the new home of Harleys which reflects 31 years of trusted service in the region. “They are a small network and they are very picky, but they are very proactive and visible, there is no stronger brand worldwide, it’s like Coca-Cola.” The dealers will boast all the most iconic models from the Fxdr114, which cost up to $56,000, to the Fatboy. Perry says they will be a one stop Harley shop. “We have all the specialist tools and diagnostics and the Harley owner’s ‘bible’ so they can customize their bikes however they want.” He says, despite lacking the population of the big city centres,

Your Voice Closure of Stoke Kiwibank: The Nelson branch of National Council of Women urges Kiwibank to reconsider its decision to close the Stoke branch. Stoke, the fastest growing suburb in Nelson, already has many older people living in private and rental housing and in an ever-increasing number of retirement complexes and rest homes. This number will increase greatly with the projected growth of the area in the next 30 years. It is important that there are services available to meet the needs of this demographic. Stoke is a desirable place to live because of the accessibility of essential services in a compact area. Kiwibank, the only bank in the area, has played an important role as one of these essential services and customers have appreciated being able to interact with the staff when completing their transactions. We consider a bank a social service as well as a com-
mercial operation and wish to see this role continue. Many older people do not have the required computer skills to give them confidence with internet banking. Others will have failed to adapt to changing computer programmes and given up in frustration. The alternatives of going to Richmond or Nelson for their banking requirements are more physically demanding and therefore more stressful. The world of banking is very competitive, but many New Zealanders have regarded Kiwibank as slightly different to the others - it is “our bank” - and have higher expectations of it. This is a chance for the bank to show that it is aware of the impact of its policies and that it can be competitive and have a social conscience. It seems the future of Stoke NZ Post, an essential service, has not yet been finalised. For an area as large as Stoke not to have easy access to a posting facility is unthinkable. We look forward to hearing that a site has been found for its operation. Mary Holz

Nelson Matters Nelson Greypower, Nelson Mayor Rachel Reese and I are doing all we can to save Stoke’s Kiwibank and PostShop. The shock announcement of closure came from NZ Post and Kiwibank without any consultation last week. My greatest concern is the impact on the 4,500 older residents of Stoke who depend on face to face banking services for their independence. I have been contacted by dozens of seniors, particularly those in their 80s and 90s, who do not use internet banking and are fearful for their future. Some talk of giving Power of Attorney to family members over their banking,
others are considering going into homes. These seniors deserve better. I also worry about the impact on the Stoke shopping precinct. If people have to go to Richmond or the city for banking and other services, they are likely to do their other shopping there too. This undermines the viability of our Stoke Pharmacy, fruit shop, bakery and other retailers. I appreciate that services may have to close if they are not being used, but the Stoke Kiwibank and PostShop is well used and busy. There is often a queue for services and the Stoke branch’s turnover is similar to city branches in Auckland and
Wellington. Nor can it be argued that Kiwibank or NZ Post is under financial stress. Kiwibank made a profit of $122 million this year, up from $58 million last year. NZ Post has just announced a $13 million profit. It was poor form for no one from the Coalition Government, Kiwibank or NZ Post to front at last Friday’s public meeting that was packed with over 230 concerned residents. Every Labour, NZ First and Green party MP was invited but none could be bothered turning up to explain this decision. The star of the meeting was Nelson Greypower President Chris-

Debbie Churton had her first puff of a cigarette at 14. Peer pressured by friends, Debbie would sneak to the back of school and light up. Now, after a 30-year habit and some positive peer pressure from colleagues, Debbie has been smoke-free for 13 weeks thanks to the Stop Smoking Service. Debbie is one of 13 employees from Nelson's Mitre10 Mega who took part in the programme
run by the Nelson Marlborough DHB. "I feel amazing, mentally, financially and just much healthier,” she says. The free seven-week programme involves a quit coach coming to the workplace for one hour a week to help support those quitting, provide nicotine alternatives and provide information. Alternatives include nicotine lozenges, gum and nicotine patches. "The setting is nice and relaxed and it’s very positive, which is important,” says Debbie. “If someone slips up, we support
them instead of having a go at them.” Debbie says while she used a vapour to help get through the initial withdrawal period, she is finding herself less reliant on it as the weeks pass. Mitre 10 Mega Nelson marketing coordinator Murray Leaning says they were more than happy to support the employees opting into the service. "We are a family business and we want to look after our family, so they can look after theirs.” Te hā Pūkenga Manaaki quit coach Sonia Hepi-Treanor says
13 people becoming non-smokers is a massive achievement. "It has a massive roll-on effect for families and the community’s health, it’s quite magic.” One of the alternative methods the service encourages is vaping which Sonia says is 95 per cent less harmful. "It’s clean nicotine and clean nicotine is OK.” Health promoter at NMDHB Gayle Hay says: "It’s not harmless but is less harmful.” Mitre 10’s Jayden Hutnell has been smoke-free for four months thanks to the programme.
He says now that he doesn’t spend his days off sitting outside, he has more time to spend with his children. Jayden strongly recommends the programme to other smokers. "It’s so worth it, just do it, give it a go.” Thanks to the money Debbie has saved from quitting she will be visiting her new granddaughter in Auckland this Christmas. It’s the month of Movember – an opportunity for men grow a moustache to raise money and awareness about men's health, and over the years many local businesses and individuals have got on board to support the worthy cause. The funds raised each year go towards programmes targeted at prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention. Globally, men experience worse longer-term health than women and die, on average, six years earlier. Prostate cancer rates are projected to double in
the next 15 years; testicular cancer rates have already doubled, and annually, three-quarters of suicides are men. Our fathers, partners, brothers and friends are facing this health crisis and it’s not being talked about. We can’t afford to stay silent. The Movember Foundation is the only charity tackling men’s health on a global scale, year round. By 2030, it will reduce the number of men dying prematurely by 25%. Millions have joined the movement, raising $710 million to help the foundation to fund over 1,200 men’s
health projects. The Movember Foundation has one goal: to stop men dying too young. Anually, during the month of November, a range of events are held around New Zealand to raise awareness about the pertinent issues facing men. For 30 days in November, Mo Bros and Mo Sistas rally to support the cause, get people talking and raise funds for men’s health projects. Sports teams, clubs, campuses, favourite restaurant, bar, barbershop and other local businesses organise themselves into teams for some friend-
ly competition, raise funds, share men’s health information or plan activities throughout November. There are three ways people can fundraise. Firstly you can ‘Grow Your Mo’ and inspire donations, conversations and real change. Secondly, you can ‘Make Your Move’ and challenge yourself to get physically active and raise funds for men’s health. The third option is to be a host and arrange a get together with mates to raise much-needed funds for men’s health: cook up a fancy dinner, tee up a sports match, pump the
tunes at a party or maybe set up a shave down – in which a group shave off facial hair to get the month started. Many local businesses have got in behind Movember over the years including Founders Brewery and Stormy’s Man Cave Barber, which teamed up to raise funds and awareness for men’s health in 2015, holding a Magnum P I-themed ‘mo party.’ Last year 27 staff members at TDC signed up for Movember and grew moustaches, with a goal to raise $1500 for the cause. Last year, in excess of $900,000 dollars was raised throughout New Zealand, a record amount. The Movember movement’s humble beginnings date back to 2003 when two mates, Travis Garone and Luke Slattery, met up for a quiet beer in Melbourne, and discussed the
idea that sparked the concept of Movember. It was an era when moustaches had all but disappeared as a fashion trend, but they decided to talk their mates into growing a mo. Inspired by a friend’s mother who was fundraising for breast cancer, they decided to make the campaign about men’s health and prostate cancer. They designed the rules of Movember and agreed to
charge ten dollars to grow a Mo. Trav designed the first Movember logo, and they sent around an email titled ‘Are you man enough to be my man?’ Then they found 30 guys willing to take up the challenge. Those first ‘Mo Bros’ grew their moustaches with such enthusiasm that in 2004 a decision was made to formalise the concept and get all participants growing for a cause. Adam Ga-

The guys then researched men's health issues and agreed to formally support prostate cancer as their cause. In 2006, the foundation developed Movember’s official tagline: ‘Changing the face of men’s health.’ Further research into men’s health revealed that depression was a significant issue, and ‘beyondblue’ the national depression and anxiety initiative was brought on as Movember’s second men’s health partner.That year, the campaign was launched in New Zealand in partnership with The Prostate Cancer Foundation of NZ. The 2007 campaign saw 134,171 Mo Bros and Mo Sistas in Australia, New Zealand, the US, Canada, the UK and Spain raise $21.5 million and generate enormous awareness of men’s health issues. Today, there are now official campaigns in 21 countries, raising more than 730

Driving lessons on the water Dominik Berghamer Recently I read an article about women’s boating safety courses run by the Deputy Harbour Master Amanda Kerr. I organized a group of ladies from the club to partake in the course. There was no problem finding six willing ladies to do this as we had talked about doing something like this for some time. The course was run over a Thursday evening and a Sunday morning. On the Thursday night we were taught the rules of the sea and useful safety information including dismantling and checking our inflatable life vests. (Amanda has kindly agreed to come to a club social day to demonstrate this – we were all worried about setting them off and hence had not bothered to pull them apart!) Also, we had a go at tying knots with rope. None of us had this skill and when you are tying up to a jetty or putting your burley pot down, this is very

handy to know. On Sunday morning we all crawled out of bed nice and early (for a Sunday!) and got ourselves down to the boat ramp at 9am to have a practical morning on the water in the harbour master’s boat. We were all really looking forward to this and Amanda lived up to all of our expectations! She reinforced the rules of the harbour and we all had a drive of the boat and some of us had a go at putting the boat on the trailer (a rubber pontoon – it’s all good boys! No damage was done!) and parking the boat by the jetty. It was a great course and as each one of us are often out with just our men, we are now armed with information and skills to help out in the case of an emergency. Thanks Amanda! Hearing art through earrings Two local artists have come together to give audiences a treat for their eyes as well as their ears. "Playlist for Earrings" is a collaborative installation by Katie Pascoe and Karolina Gorton that brings together illustrations, jewellery and music. It began as an online Instagram exhibition by Katie before being developed into a playlist for earrings centred around disco themes. These songs have echoes of the gender politics that arose from this era. “Earrings are seen as fashion
items, but for me they definitely held something,” Katie says. “I was lucky enough to go to Grace Jones and something cemented with creating a playlist for earrings.” Katie designed the exhibition to feature earrings which were linked with their own particular song. “I am interested in an art practice that explores creative possibilities and ideas with objects,” she says. “As a contemporary jeweller, I am particularly interested in objects that relate to the body. Objects
can be powerful things that connect us to people, places and even the mystic unknown at times.” Then she enlisted Karolina to translate the jewellery pieces and photographic portraits with her distinctive handdrawn style. “The Playlist for Earrings is a jewellery, illustration and auditory exhibition sensation - fun, light, but with a good punch as well.” The exhibition is on at Salt Gallery on Vanguard St until Saturday.

Every few weeks we sit down with someone interesting doing something interesting and have a burger and a yarn. This time we chat with Nick Lanigan who is helping organise the ‘Light Up Nelson’ Christmas lights event and competition this year. How did you end up helping to organise the event? In prior years there had been sponsors, but last year they didn’t participate but didn’t really tell anyone. It got to the end of the November but all the home owners were scratching their heads. Kelly Holmes set up a Facebook group to help organise it and it got amazing reaction. Then Mitre10 said they would put in some prizes, but it was all last minute. So, this year we all decided to get this organised up front with help from the owners. Is anything going to be different? We don’t know how many people are going to be involved yet but there is definitely interest. Some are really keen on the competition and then there are those who just want to have their lights. Some people don’t want to be voted on so we will have
together but increasingly it is all computerised. Why do you think it’s so popular? It’s very festive and tied to the Christmas theme and you only see it once a year. It’s a great night out for all the family. We are trying to make it so there are lots of different homes only a short while away. I’ve always put light strings on the house for years. But then, two years ago, we started to get a bit more serious, and I started looking to America to see what they were doing. It really is on another lev-
el there and they have had access to much better equipment. But with everything coming out of China these days it has become a lot easier to source differnet materials. Last year, I think we built half the show I had in my head. This year I think we have the whole show, which is very exciting. Most people in Nelson decorate and you can walk around their homes, but there is a few of us who are into computerisation and set it to music. It's a bit more of a show to experience. I’m an electrical engineer but I work in IT, so this is the perfect blend. You need to know how to put it
When do you start getting ready? It’s a year-long process. A lot of us build things during winter in preparation for this time of year. This time we have built a 20 foot electrical mega tree of lights. That’s new for us. Where can people sign up or find the map? Discs:
It uses gravity to apply traction, the traction gently opens the discs and as they open up they create suction, this suction draws fluid from the surrounding tissue back into the discs, re-hydrating them. This is the key! Discs do not have their own blood supply, they rely on trans fer of fluid from the surrounding tissue to keep them healthy and hydrated and over the years as discs get thinner with age, they lose the ability to take on fluid (just like squeezing a sponge) and they start to de-hydrate.
Posture: Poor
posture is one of the major cases of pain and is a major contributor to the deterioration of the body with age. A difference in leg length causes most of the hip and knee issues, as they continue to place uneven loads on the joints; similar to the wheels out of alignment on your car. Trying to correct posture is extremely difficult due to muscle memory, as it constantly pulls the muscles back to where they were. At a level of 40 degrees or more on the Teeter, the muscle groups open up and eventually come back into alignment, using the table daily, does not allow the muscle memory to pull them back out of alignment and slowly the muscles start to lose their memory and go with the flow, allowing the body to come back into correct posture. Then using the table once a day will ensure it is kept there.

Anita McLaren took home the big prize at the 2018 ASB Nelson
Sports Awards on Saturday night. The Black Sticks star was named the Sportsperson of the Year and Sportswoman of the Year at the
annual awards to cap a sensational year. Anita called curtains on her esteemed career this year after winning gold at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast. Anita has amassed a record 271 caps for the Black Sticks as well as netting another record 105 goals. Heather Bryant from Nelson Hockey accepted Anita’s award and says Anita has had an extraordinary career. She says Anita was gutted she could not attend the awards as she had children commitments in Auckland. "She is a real hometown girl, she still calls Nelson home and is a role model for all the kids here.” Anita spoke via video saying the award was the icing on the cake following her retirement. "I am so proud, so humbled, to all the other nominees, congratulations, you

In the master’s category, New Zealand waka ama silver medallist Kereama Payn won Master’s Sportsperson of the Year after he finished fourth in the World Championships in Tahiti and Nelson Athletics coach Dennis Kale claimed the crown of best coach. Also honoured on the night were seven Nelson sporting stalwarts who were given Rata Foundation Lifetime Contribution to Sport awards. Tony Peacock and Steve Mitchell – Rugby, Ross Alvey – Cricket, Ian McKeage – Tennis, Jane Andrew – Netball, Mark Nalder – Table Tennis and Ruby Aberhart – Netball were all acknowledged for their contribution to their respective sports.

A golfing masterclass Jonty Dine A team of veteran Nelson golfers made history earlier this month. The Tasman Masters men side finished second at the New Zealand Freyberg Masters held in Taupo from December 1218, the team’s best finish in its 40 plus year history. The team, Glenn Drummmond, Craig Newman, John Murray, Corey Taylor, Blair Bavin and Mark Le Compte, represented Nelson, Marlborough and the West Coast Team manager Lynden Murray says the tournament pits 16 associations from across New Zealand against each other in a week-long tournament playing
up to 36 holes a day. “The format is based on match play and you have to win your game either 3-2, 4-1 or 5-0.” The minimum age to enter the Masters is 40 with some players in their mid-50’s still boasting scratch handicaps. “We had our best finish last year at 3rd equal and this year we only came second by half a point, we were only a couple of putts away from away from winning the whole thing.” Tasman managed to knock off southern rivals Canterbury, who had handed them a hiding earlier in the year, as well as three time defending champions, Auckland. “We weren’t underdogs but were crowd favorites, everyone
wanted us to win or just really anyone but Auckland.” Manawatu/Wanganui eventually claimed the title as Tasman fell short against Waikato on the final day of play. “There was a really good feel about the whole team, they mixed well on and off the course,” Lynden says. He says it was mentally straining for the men playing from 7-7 every day. “They needed a bit of running repair, they were rapt but shattered. They did a lot of fitness stuff, not usually the master’s way but they put a lot of work into it.” He says the side will look to go one better at the 2019 Masters in Timaru.

Bolitho’s conquers Spartan course Jonty Dine Ben Bolitho continues to prove that pain is no obstacle. The endurance racer recently raced at the Spartan Bright trifecta weekend, taking a podium finish in each of his three races. First up for the 37-year-old was the ‘super,’ a 15km middle distance course. The race packs more than 30 obstacles through tougher and more rugged terrain. Following the super was the sprint which sees competitors negotiate mud, fire, walls and barbed wire. Ben finished both races third in his age group, however, the final day would be Ben’s toughest test. On the final day, Ben took on the ‘ultra-beast,’ a course which only 25 per cent of competitors complete. He conquered the 50km course in 9 hours and 22 minutes,

He says the toughest part was the fast starts. “We did sub five-minute kms for the first few kms over some pretty rough ground and the 3700m of down hills.” Ben says his body held up reasonably well after the trio of races. “Surprisingly, other than few sore bits and bruising and one toenail that will soon depart, I felt better after the race than before but that may have been relief.” However, there is little rest time for Ben. Next up, in mid-December, is the 'everesting' challenge, ascending and descending the height of Mount Everest in one continuous run.

While its season hasn’t been so successful, Tasman United has had plenty of experience to draw on this year. The side has imported a number of top talents with Englishmen Tom Hickey and Ryan Worrall at the forefront of a roster overhaul at the club. Tom arrived in Nelson for a short stint with Richmond Athletic in May 2017 and enjoyed it so much, he knew he was coming back. The tough-tackling midfielder was one of the first signed for the 2018-19 National League season and named captain before the pre-season game. He has many years of experience in non-league
football with Hampton and Richmond, Wealdstone, and Met Police. “It’s a real honour to be named captain, it’s a young group, so I am aware of the responsibility to lead them to best of my ability on and off the pitch.” With pre-season results being shaky and a five loss start to the season, Tom was delighted to get off the mark with a fantastic home win against the Wellington Phoenix reserves. “The team have worked hard, it’s a new group and a new coach, so naturally we will need some time. Apart from the first pre-season game against Canterbury, we knew we were not that far off.” Tom joined Ryan Worrall at North Wellington FC in July and immediately struck up a partner-

There's a tidal shift going on in the Port Nelson Sea swims standings and it's led by a large group of teenagers, most of them aged 15. Alec Swan had a point to prove on Thursday after finishing first the previous week but being docked 10 seconds for a navigation error and relegated to second. He made his point emphatically, sprinting to the finish to pip last year's top swimmer, 20-year-old Luke Kelly, by two seconds.
Kelly and fellow 20-year-old Hayden Squance have dominated proceedings for the past two seasons, but Swan and a further armada of teenagers have changed the rules in the last fortnight. On a fine night, 165 swimmers were set to swim, with 132 taking on the 1km course and 33 starting in the 500m short course.
