Terrier saved from sea Charles Anderson All Mike Gafa could think of when he saw his six-year-old border terrier being swept out to sea was to run down Tahunanui Beach and commandeer the nearest kayak he could find. “Emotions just took over,” he says. “All I could see was our little dog going.” On Sunday, Mike and his wife Michelle had been walking Ruby along the beach with their other dog Zach when Ruby decided to jump into the ocean for a swim. The region will play host to the only full military funeral in recent memory when one of New Zealand’s most decorated soldiers

is laid to rest next week. Major-General Walter “Sandy” Babington Thomas died in Australia at the age of 98 last month but will be brought back to his home in Riwaka for a funeral worthy of his service to both New Zealand and the British armed

forces. Over the years he was shot at, bombed, stabbed and imprisoned during a “highly thrilling and successful military career,” according to his family obituary. As a 17-year-old, Sandy signed up for the territorials in 1935, ly-

ing about his age in the process. “He was a bit of a rebel,” says local RSA president Barry Pont. “He was a revered and a quite humble man.” Representatives of New Zealand’s military will attend the funeral, as well as an honour guard and fir-

ing party. Barry says he can’t remember when such an honour was afforded to such a distinguished soldier. Sandy served in the Middle East, Italy and Japan during his 32-year

strong.” Before they knew it, Ruby was being pulled out to sea. “I didn’t even say anything to Michelle,” Mike says. “I was off down the beach and asked a family ‘can I borrow your kayak’.” While Mike was paddling a passer-by suggested they call Port Nelson. Mike had been battling against the tide. He couldn’t see Ruby and was trying to come to terms with the loss. But then Bryan Drummond on the Port Nelson gatehouse answered the phone. “It was certainly a different sort of call but every day is different here,” he says. He despatched Mark Howard and Justin McBride in the pilot boat, Waimea, to see if they could find Ruby. The pair headed out to the green pylon markers in the harbour – about 200 metres from shore. Mark called Michelle back on the phone to say they hadn’t found

anything. He was leaving a message for her when he started calling out “is that her? That’s her!” Ruby was paddling for her life. The Port Nelson men scooped her out of the water and brought her back to dry land. At that moment Mike was getting out of the water with the kayak. A friend of Michelle’s came running down the beach yelling “they found her!” Mike and Michelle headed round the waterfront for a grand reunion. “I went through 100 different emotions in two hours,” Mike says. “Everybody who says they aren’t part of your family haven’t got a dog for the right reason.” Michelle says Ruby bounced back and has even more of an attitude than before. The dog was off to work as usual with Mike yesterday morning. As for the Gafas: “On an outgoing tide we will probably get Ruby an extendible lead,” Mike says.

Full military funeral for ‘larger than life’ general FROM PAGE 1 military career and became the youngest commander of a New Zealand infantry battalion at war at the age of 24. After WW2 he joined the British armed forces. He was decorated for bravery four times, received the Military Cross twice and was awarded the Distinguished Service Order and the New Zealand Operational Service Medal. He also received the Silver Star from the United States army. Sandy was wounded and became a prisoner of war on Crete in World War II, but not before earning the Military Cross for bravery. “He was an inspiration to his men, setting an example for cheerfulness, initiative and courage seldom surpassed,” his official citation for the Military Cross reads. After he was captured, his German captors flew him to a prison hospital where Sandy launched a series of daring escape plans. One had him playing dead and being carted out in a coffin. This would have worked had he not fallen asleep and his snoring alerted the guards. After three attempts, Sandy finally succeeded in get-

After the war he joined the British army where he distinguished himself during the Malayan Emergency and then found himself in Kenya during the Mau Mau Uprising. When he was 51, Sandy became a Major General and was posted to Singapore as the commander of the Far Eastern Command. He retired to a farm in South East Queensland due to the poor health of his wife Iredale. “He set to work with his usual

enthusiasm to singlehandedly plant and nurture thousands of trees, and created a beautiful property where he lived surrounded by family and friends until his death,” his family obituary reads. Sandy’s daughter Gabrielle Kervalla, who lives in Takaka, remembers her father as “larger than life”. “He was very big-hearted and loved a good laugh. As a daughter there was never a dull moment. He leaves a big hole.” After WW2 Sandy travelled with his family to post war Germany and then to “hot spots” all around the world. Gabrielle says it wasn’t hard to realise the respect her father commanded “It didn’t make any difference. He was just our father.” Bev Boucher of Shone and Shirley funeral directors says it’s a privilege to help put on Sandy’s funeral. “He deserves it all. He was such an amazing man.” He is survived by his three daughters, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Friends and military colleagues are invited to attend a memorial service at Motueka RSA on Monday 27 at 1pm followed by an internment at Riwaka Cemetery at 3.30pm.

“Come and join the parade” is the message from the organisers of next weekend’s new and improved Nelson Santa Parade. With a brand new route and carnival spot all sorted, all that’s needed now are more entries, with two cash prizes to be won. “We want people to join the parade,” says parade organiser Huup Waagen. “We have 25 in the parade lineup to date ranging from bands, musical groups and community floats - but we were counting on having at least 40.” Huup says that when he first became involved with the parade 10 years ago, there were around 60 floats. But in the past three years the number of floats has dropped from 45 in 2014, 31 in 2015 and 29 in 2016. “This year we want to bring new

Maitai forest fire ‘suspicious’ Police are treating a forest fire which ripped through the Maitai Valley on Friday night as “suspicious”. The fire started about 2.4km past the Maitai Valley Camp around 9.30pm.

NEWS STUDENTS MAY DOUBLE DIP ON FREE FEES: School leavers starting a degree programme next year at Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT) could be in for a double bonus in the wake of the Government’s zerofee first-year study policy. Not only are top-of-the-south and West Coast school leavers in line for the first year-free deal, but they will also gain the benefit of NMIT’s existing half-a-degree-for-free scholarship. Director of marketing Virginia Watson says details aren’t certain until a Government announcement on its policy, including eligibility criteria, but undergraduate students could save an extra $3000. NMIT’s half-a-degree-for free scheme may be redesigned to take into account the Government’s new policy, but Virginia says NMIT wants to retain an incentive for local school leavers to stay in the region. MAN USES AXE TO ATTACK HOUSE: A man wielding an axe in Stoke was apprehended by police last Thursday. Police were called to a home on Karaka St, where a 50 year-old man used an axe to smash down the front door of a house. Police say there was no threat to the general public and the incident was being treated as a domestic dispute. “Somebody has knocked down a door with an axe but police have arrived at the scene. He is not a threat to the wider public,” a police spokesperson told the Weekly. PINBALL CHAMPS IN NELSON: A national pinball competition has kicked off in Nelson. The Mac’s Interstate Pinball Competition will see Nelson pinball wizards vying for the highest score and chance to win a trip to America. The Vic Brewbar on Trafalgar Street will have a leaderboard and, after three weeks, the Nelsonian with the highest score will be invited to the national finals in Auckland in February. The competition started last week and finishes on Sunday, December 3. To take part, head into the Vic Brew Bar.

When Rod Barnes drives from Richmond to Nelson, he is usually behind the wheel of an NBus. But this weekend he will be on a Harley Davidson decked out with tinsel and toys. On Saturday, Rod and hundreds of other motorbike riders will participate in the 32nd Ulysses Nelson Toy Run. Organised by the Nelson branch of the Ulysses Club, the run gathers new toys and donations for the Salvation Army to distribute, helping Nelsonians in need during the Christmas period.

Rod joined Ulysses in 2008 and this will be his 10th Toy Run. He has been a bus driver for 24 years, but he’s been riding motorbikes since the early 1970s and is the proud owner of a Harley Davidson 1200 custom. “I’d had my bike for about eight or nine months and was out one night and started talking to some friends who were in the club, and they said ‘gee whizz Rod, it’s a cool club, why don’t you join?’” And he hasn’t looked back. “I remember my first Toy Run very well, and one year, I think it was 2009, we had one of our biggest turnouts of around 600700 bikes.” And he always makes sure he has a passenger, helping him

collect toys along the way. “I always take someone on the back with me. For the last three years I’ve taken my daughter, and my oldest bus driver friend came one year – she was 74 and had a great time,” says Rod. “I’m not sure who I’m taking this year yet, though.” He says the run brings out the wonderful community spirit of Nelson. “The community support it so well - all the toys we get for the Salvation Army is really good. “Things have changed a bit over the years, and we have had to bring in traffic management, but the police are very helpful.” Rod says the run always gets lots of support from the West Coast and Marlborough branches of

Ulysses too, and any member of the public with a motorbike or scooter can join in. The Toy Run is on this Saturday, 25th November, starting at 10am at Papp’s Carpark in Richmond. It will travel along Cambridge St, Oxford St, Salisbury Rd through to Stoke, Waimea Rd, Rutherford St, Selwyn Pl, Trafalgar St, Halifax St, Paru Paru Rd, finishing at the Trafalgar Centre. Donations can be made on the day at the start and end points, or by waving down the Salvation Army truck which follows the procession. The public are being asked to keep an eye out for the bikes and give them a wave or a donation.

Whooping cough on the rise in Nelson Five cases of whooping cough have been confirmed in Nelson and another 18 cases are suspected. Medical officer of health, Dr Stephen Bridgman, has advised all GPs in the region to be alert to whooping cough symptoms, to test for the contagious disease and to notify them of any cases.

Stephen urges people and parents to be vigilant and seek immediate advice from their GP if they or their children show symptoms. "Whooping cough affects people of all ages, but can be very serious for infants and is very dangerous for unborn babies,” he says. "Whooping cough is very easily spread in the air

when an infected person sneezes or coughs. It’s difficult to avoid catching it if one person in a home or class is contagious, so it’s important that people act on the symptoms.” Stephen advises people to keep their vaccinations up to date and to call your GP or Healthline on 0800 611 116 for more information.

Education grants making a huge difference

High tea and fashion show to raise funds for cancer, Tuesday, November 7: Morrison Square centre manager Angela Leonard says their high tea and fashion show fundraiser on 9 November was “fantastic” and they managed to sell 125 tickets and raise $16,000 for the Nelson Regional Breast and Gynaecological Trust. “Feedback has been fantastic with everyone enjoying the venue, fashion and high tea and speakers.” Angela adds they had “amazing” support from lots of local businesses, who donated food, money and their time. Concert to help save the children, Tuesday, November 7: Save the Children Nelson held their annual fundraising concert last Wednesday night, and it was a full house with all 250 seats selling out. They raised more than $6000 for the charity - their best effort ever. The show was held at All Saints Church and featured the Ferio Saxophone Quartet. “It was a great success,” says Frances Taylor from Save the Children Nelson. “It was extremely well received and the whole place was buzzing with the musical experience. Ashleigh Dwyer’s eldest children don’t get to complain to their Mum about going to school because she goes to school too. While her three children, aged nine, seven and two, think that it’s a bit of a novelty that Mum goes to school, Ashleigh says that she was really apprehensive initially. “I left school at 15, so going back was such a big step and I wasn’t sure if I’d make it through,” she says. “But one of the things I’ve learnt is that you have a lot more strength than you realise.” The young mum of three was the lucky recipient of this year’s Soroptimist Club of Waimea education grant for women over 25 who are obtaining their first tertiary qualification. She says that the grant made a big difference and took a lot of pressure off. “I was so happy when I got the call,” says Ashleigh. “It felt amazing, I did a happy dance.” President Lynne Ehau says that the club undertakes a range of

“Seeing the difference that it makes and how much they grow is so rewarding.” Soroptimist member Barbara Bird, who has kept in touch with Ashleigh, says that Ashleigh interviewed well and deserved the grant. “Ashleigh is exactly what our scholarship stands for,” says Barbara. “It’s about a hand up, not a hand out.” Ashleigh is finishing her final assessments in the third year of her four-year Bachelor of Social Work degree at NMIT. She also has recently completed an 18-week with Family Works, part of Presbyterian Support. Once she has completed her degree, Ashleigh is hoping to continue working with families in the community. “I’m really looking forward to graduating because it’s been a real journey for all of us,” says Ashleigh. Her advice for anyone contemplating going back to study is “just do it”. The Soroptimist education grants are for women over 25 undertaking their first tertiary qualification. and Invercargill and back. “As long as they clean it we don’t mind,” Belinda says. “They can just ring up and book, and then head away and do what they need to do.” The company hasn’t advertised the service but already it is getting around. “We want it to be used, that’s what it’s there for,” Belinda says. “It’s just easy to use. 1080 drop in Kahurangi The controversial pest control 1080 has been dropped on 39,700 hectares of Kahurangi National Park, the Department of Conservation says. The aerial drop was part of DOC’s Battle for our Birds operation targeting the western side of the park, including the coastal strip between Kohaihai and Big River and the Heaphy River catchment. DOC says the drop was needed to protect vulnerable populations of great spotted kiwi, whio, kea, kākā, Powelliphanta snails and long-

tailed bats. The 1080 drop targeted rats and will also reduce stoat numbers through stoats eating poisoned rodent carcasses. Prior to the 1080 operation, DOC had planned to drop the poison over approximately 171,000 hectares of the park and adjoining conservation land. However, this was reduced to 39,700 hectares after monitoring showed rat numbers had not reached levels requiring control in much of the planned operational area.

Non-alcoholic beer comes to Nelson Brittany Spencer There’s a new craft beer in town but to the confusion of some brewers, it’s non-alcoholic. Brewer Jonty Wallace launced his new nonalcoholic beer at the Nelson Market on Saturday. Glass of Hops, the first drink from Jonty and wife Jo’s new company, New Ways Brewing Co, is a hoppy and aromatic craft beer. It has gone through the usual fermentation process, but with one significant difference - the alcohol has been taken out during the procedure. “We have thrown a lot of hops at it and have Jonty and Jo Wallace with their non-alcoholic beer at the Nelson Market really focused on using a lot of aroma hops to on Saturday morning. Photo: Jessie Johnston. make it smell delicious, it’s very floral, fruity, and a bit citrusy.” After dropping out of university and making a career as a brewer for the past seven years, Jonty says he gets a mixed reaction from his mates in the industry. “A lot of them just tell me bugger off or are completely shocked, but there are also a lot of people who are supportive. From a brewers perspective, people might think ‘why are you doing it’, but, from the consumer perspective they think it’s great.” Inspiration for a non-alcoholic craft beer came from a family trip to Poland to visit Jo’s family. “When we went to Poland Jo was breastfeeding, so her sister introduced her to the world of nonalcoholic beer. Nelson hazards: Between April and June 2017, Nelson City Council sought community feedback regarding Nelson's flood, fault and liquefaction hazards. On 13 November 2017, the Manager Environment sent out a letter acknowledging the feedback. The feedback has been summarised into a report. The Tahunanui liquefaction hazard will be addressed in the Nelson Plan. A draft Nelson Plan will be released in August 2018 and this will be a further opportunity to provide feedback. The Nelson Motor Show could be yours. After four years, organiser Steve Steele is offering over the event to a like-minded party to help take

it to the next level. “It’s time for me to step back, it’s getting busier and bigger every year and it’s getting too big just for me.” The show attracts thousands to Tahunanui Beach each year to check out classic and vintage cars, hotrods and even aircraft.

Steve says, between his day job as a manager for Envirowaste and him building his own home, there was little time to dedicate to the event. He helped start the Motor Show four years ago and since then it has grown into a major event on the car calendar.

“It’s just incredible. Every year new people turn up. It changes every year.” He thought it might suit a car club, association or even a business looking for something to use as a promotional tool. Steve says he has always wanted the Motor Show to be for every-

one. “Even if you bring along a $500 car or a $500,000 car, you will be treated the same. You get a young fellah, with a $500 car he is proud of that. When he is 50 like the rest of us he will end up with something different. He

Wannabe Robin Hoods and Katniss Everdeens may soon have the opportunity to test their skills, in a first-of-its-kind three-dimensional archery park proposed for Nelson. Archery has made a significant revival thanks to movies such as The Hunger Games and Brave, and now Nelson looks set to get in on the action thanks to archer Markus Erdmann. “I want to take this inspiration, provide all the gear and training, and give people an amazing outdoors experience,” says Markus. Starting his archery training in Germany over 15 years ago, Markus was surprised and disappointed that it was conducted indoors. The ‘clinical’ indoor conditions weren’t the ‘Robin Hood experience’ that he was seeking. However, his love for the sport saw him training alongside Olympic archers and competing, and winning, at tournaments. But his desire to combine archery with the outdoors never dimmed, and before shifting to New Zealand he had already set up a small company running 3D archery for groups and parties. “Kids don’t always like a bush walk, but I soon discovered that give them a bow and arrow and they’ll walk for days,” says Markus. Shifting to New Zealand saw this passion put on hold for a while, but the organiser of Nelson’s recent Startup Weekend for entrepreneurs and venues project manager for the Crick-

Photo: Judene Edgar. et World Cup, says that the time is now right. “There are 3D archery parks all over Europe and even an archery village in Austria,” he says. “It’s such a fantastic way to get people to forget about technology for a while and enjoy the outdoors.” Unlike a typical archery range which is flat with targets set at exact distances, in 3D archery three-dimensional animal targets are placed along a hiking trail. Each target creates a different shooting scenario depending upon location, size and terrain. Markus has eight new targets arriving shortly, including a small deer, rabbit, boar, beaver and a dragon. The targets are made from a ‘self-healing foam’ that closes again after the arrow has been removed. “I think it really complements Nelson’s reputation as an outdoor adventure sports hub,” he says. With his first practice round

under his belt, Markus is hoping to be up-and-running in the new year, initially in the weekends for group events such as birthday parties, school outing and stag dos. Markus is also looking at adding dodge archery, a heartpumping combination of the thrill of dodge ball with the precision of archery. Using round foam-tipped arrows, he says that the impact is less than paintball. “I’m running a survey on Facebook to get feedback on what people would like to see to help me plan what opens and when,” he says. “I have a site in the Brook Valley that I’m using at the moment, but I’d also be keen to hear from anyone who has a farm or forestry block who might be interested in letting us use their property.” Search ‘Archery Park Nelson’ on Facebook and complete the survey before November 25 to go into the draw to win a handcrafted replica medieval arrow.

Jessie Johnston Nelson hot rod club, the Fifeshire Street Rodders, played host to this year’s NZHRA National Hot Rod Show, which saw more than 50 vehicles exhibited at Trafalgar Centre over the weekend. Owners from all over the country came to Nelson to show off their customised cars, which were at various stages of their restoration or modification journey. Stoke resident Leslie Stobie has spent the last 20 years working on his 1947 Chevrolet Fleetmaster and says the only thing on the whole car that hasn’t been modified is the firewall. “It’s had 13 inches added to the door, four inches out of the length of the body, 4.5 inches out of the roof and the bonnet has been hinged sideways. "The front grill has been handmade, the boots had 2.5 inches cut out of it, it sits on an HQ ute chassis, powered by a 454 Big-Block Chevy, Turbo 350 and Ford nine-inch rear end,” says Leslie. But still, Leslie says the project is not finished yet as it needs some more panel work done to it to endure the car really shines. Originally from Motueka, Leslie’s brother had suggested the car to him. After a visit to see the “rusty Chevy that was probably heading to the tip,” Leslie purchased it and began modifications. “I just like cars, this is the third Chevy that I’ve owned, but the first one that I’ve done this much work to, there’s not another one of these in the world,” says Leslie. “Currently, I’m also working on a 1949 Vanguard Stationwagon and a caravan.” Fifeshire Street Rodders president Lex Chapman-Stone says the event received a great turn out from the public and hot rod owners, with some travelling from as far as Cromwell and Whangarei. The event concluded with a prizegiving where Paul Bailey from Wellington received the People’s Choice award for his Dodge Challenger. Judges also named him the overall winner of the the show, after scrutinising every inch of his vehicle.

“You can be as friendly or as private as you like to be here.” After losing her driver’s licence due to a medical problem, Edna found herself in Tauranga, her home of more than 30 years, with no way to get around. “My daughter in Nelson said to me, ‘you better move here’,” says Edna. “My son came down from Auckland and helped my daughter visit all the Nelson villages. They chose Summerset in the Sun because this is the nicest village. They chose my apartment, which I love. It’s comfortable modern and airy with big windows. Every few weeks the Nelson Weekly catches up with someone interesting at either Burger Culture or the Vic Brewbar, to chat about themselves and an interesting project they have going on. This week we sit down with local writer Justin Eade whose local play “Maungatapu” is on the cusp of doing something big in New Zealand. How did you get into writing? I’m not a great verbal story teller but I’ve always written things down. It just sort of flowed and I could make things up and make them fit together. But I put it away for a long time. I thought ‘this life’s about paying the bills’ and I supressed it. Then I had a major life event in late 20s, everything came apart. Things came close to the wire. So, I decided life’s too short. I could have been gone, I’m still here so everything is a second chance. So you went into writing full time? For a while I still had other jobs but at one point 10 years ago I knew I had to just make the leap. There are some hard times, there is a lot of rejection, but I’m starting to get a bit of traction now. You need to have perseverance. What was the first thing you wrote? The first script I ever wrote was actually about the Maungatapu murders. That was 22 years ago. I had been cycling it around for that long before I decided to turn it into a play that ran at this year’s Nelson Arts Festival. It actually

Have you had any success? I just kept going. Now I have about 20 feature film scripts. I’ve had a few optioned and did a TV3 movie a while back. My biggest break came about six years ago when I won first prize in a Hollywood competition. I got flown over there and had to do a speech to a room full of executives. It was a bit daunting. What was the script? It was called Blue Water Metal. I won a bit of money and got read around the top studio heads. I got a few inquiries for six months

and then the trail got cold, but then last year it got signed by two LA producers and got optioned, so that’s something. It tells me they are serious. What’s it about? It's an action adventure set at sea on a floating shipping container that’s slowly sinking, and they are marooned and all have different agendas trying to survive as well as fighting each other. What else have you got going on? I’ve been really blessed this year in having four different plays on this year which has blown me away really. And I’m trying to get another one off the ground for

next year’s Nelson Fringe Festival so that will be good, and a short film I’m making in March with some other local filmmakers. I also published a book of short stories this year which is really exciting. So I’m keeping busy! What advice have you got for aspiring writers? It’s a waiting game. Got to be patient and keep preserving. Stephen King said: “Talent is cheaper than table salt. What separates the talented individual from the successful one is a lot of hard work.” I agree with that.

Showcasing the region’s agricultural and pastoral heritage, as well as a range of local organisations and groups, the Nelson A & P Show is an annual highlight on the community events calendar. For over 120 years the show has been a source of entertainment, information, activities and competitions, and remains an unmissable day out for people of all ages. One and two-day presale tickets to the Nelson A & P Show will be available for early bird prices from the Richmond Mall, More FM, Haven Motors and Bowater Toyota Nelson and Motueka, until 5pm on Friday, November 24. Oneday tickets for a family, which includes two adults and three children, will be $20, while two-day family

tickets are $25. A oneday ticket for an adult is just $10, or for twoday entry, $15. Gate sales will also be available on both Saturday, November 25 and Sunday, November 26, with one-day entry for adults costing $15, children aged six to sixteen $5 and a family $25. Organisers remind members of the public that Eftpos will be available at the main gate. Richmond Town and Country Vets will be bringing some very cute and cuddly creatures for the animal nursery, the stage will come to life with a variety of live music and performances, and there will be a huge range of food to choose from. Kennel Association will be putting on a ‘Discover Dogs’ demonstration at 1pm on Saturday, or if you think your own pup is fast enough, bring them along and enter them into the terrier races at 2pm on Sunday. The Taylors Strongman Challenge will kick off at 11am on Saturday, the NMIT Youth Zone will be available on both days and the Clydesdale display will be located in front of grandstand two. During childhood everyone has their dream job, be it a fireman or a doctor, a builder or a super hero. Unfortunately, when it comes to leaving school and choosing a career path to start out on, it can be a confusing decision to make, especially as there are so many job options available and so many more we don’t even know about. That’s why Nayland College has made it their mission to give students a helping hand in achieving a number of vital skills for life after school. They’ve been doing this since 2007 with the Gateway Programme, which sets up future schoolleavers for success in the workforce by offering them valuable hands-on experience with local businesses in a range of industries. Students can take Gateway as a subject which includes a one-day per week work placement with an employer of their choice, completing Industry Training Organisation (ITO) assessments and undertaking class-based employment preparation topics. Otherwise, students can complete a Gateway placement in addition to their normal subject load. The school organises for year 12 and 13

She is now completing an apprenticeship with Nelson Alarms. students to be placed within a business of their choice, allowing them to gain a basic understanding of what employment is actually like and helping them cement their decision to carry on with a career in their chosen industry. “It’s a very successful programme for our students. The upside for businesses is they get an opportunity to engage and support students into their industry, as well as gain an insight into the work ethics of a possible future employee, or apprentice,” says Nayland College

Gateway Coordinator, Moira Raumati. “This year we had over 50 businesses taking part in the programme. When students are wondering what to do when they leave school, or are curious about a particular industry, the Gateway Programme is a valuable tool for them.” The school’s selection process ensures that the businesses participating receive reliable, hardworking students who are keen to learn and develop new skills. Many local businesses have been involved with Nayland College’s Gateway Pro-

gramme over the years and the majority of them have been impressed with the experience and the attitude of the students they have taken under their guidance. Adrian Laing from Nelson Alarms has been working with students in the Gateway programme for the last 10 years and says the business’s involvement has been about helping the next generation make the move from school to the workforce. “Our industry is quite specialised, we’re not the obvious choice for people like a builder or electrician might be, so we have to be a bit proactive, we have to almost sell or promote the industry, which is what makes the Gateway Programme beneficial for us,” says Adrian. Nelson Alarms has worked with a number of students throughout its partnership with the programme, including two placements of particular note. “Patrick went on to be one of the better apprentices we’ve had. After starting off with Nelson Alarms through the Gateway programme, Crystal put herself through a pre-trade course and, after leaving school, was offered an apprenticeship by the business. “Crystal is our first female security technician and has been with us for two years,” says Adrian.

It’s a change to how we’ve done things in the past, but Crystal is really focused and is doing a great job, and is not far from being qualified.” With a desire to get a job, Crystal decided the best thing to do would be to get a trade behind her and jumped at the chance to work with Nelson Alarms in the Gateway Programme. “This job is based a lot around computers, which is the way the world is going, and

Even if it’s not the company you end up working for, you still meet people and it’s a really good way to get yourself out there.” The Gateway Programme is funded by the Tertiary Education Committee which allows the school to purchase the Industry Training Organisation (ITO) packages and equipment needed for students to safely and efficiently fill their placements. The assessments for each industry are completed by students in class time and the practical assessments are overseen by the ITO assessors. There are a number of potential industries open to placements including construction, electrical, automotive, hospitality,

hairdressing and health, basically wherever the student’s interests lie. The Nayland College Gateway Programme has successfully upskilled and prepared hundreds of students for the workforce and local businesses continue to benefit from these motivated young

People say sport should be fun, but losing is no fun. If you’re getting better and improving your skills that’s where it starts, because if you’re doing that you will start winning and that is fun.” Bill says he hopes to announce player signings over the coming weeks. “We’ve had good discussions with players and their agents but it’s also about working in with who’s available. The NBL is being moved forward a month next year so some players are still tied up with other teams in other leagues, it’s about getting access to the players we want. “But the team we have got shadowed right now… we think we have a very talented team. Very exciting. The catch now is that we need to land them all.”

A new board has swept in to rebuild the Nelson Giants. intent to now get quality players. And if you have a winning team people will come and watch. We get really good crowds when we’re not winning. ing nine wickets before the latest game, including a five-for against Wakatu. For Thomas, he’s been more consistent, scoring 20-odd in three of his team’s five matches. With the ball he’s taken more than wickets over the same time. They say their love of cricket started while pupils at Nelson Central School and it’s only grown. “We got stuck straight into it,” says Thomas. “We had a really good garage set-up so we’d play there and it was pretty competitive. A bit of tape on the ball and we’d steam in there – there was no love lost.” David says they both feel as if they’re coming into form after a winter of tough training. “It’s just starting to come together now, we put a lot of work in.” Both are also excellent golfers, but Garry says the twins have very different personalities. “They’re leaders, both of them, but different leaders. "Thomas is fixed bayonets 'follow me lads' whereas David is more strategic and he’ll look at a situation and think ‘how do we go about this’.”

Nelson College is off to a flying start in this year’s Nelson club cricket competition, picking up four wins from its first five games, and at the heart of the college effort are twins David and Thomas Zohrab. The twins are both all-rounders, David typically opens the batting and bowls off spin while Thomas bats number 4 and is opening the bowling with his medium-fast pace. Both have represented Central Districts at age-group level and the Nelson Griffins representative team this season. Having just turned 17, Nelson College coach Garry MacDonald is excited about what the future hold for the pair. “They’re quite easy to coach because they’re incredibly competitive. A lot of people are, but they’re also very ambitious. "So whatever level they’re playing at there’s another step higher for them and when they get there it’s the next one.”

Jody 'The Professor' Scott It was a successful night’s racing for the local contingent in round two of the Hydralink “War of the Wings” Sprintcar Series. Twenty one cars fronted for the first of two rounds at Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway, with Alicia MacLauchlan, Connor Rangi, Kris Gerard, Jason Smith and Greg Teece representing the Nelson club. It was instant success with Smith winning the opening heat and Rangi finishing in 2nd - a great start for the night. The field was split into four groups, each raced in rounds to try to advance to the 25-lap main final. After a successful debut last week, plenty of eyes were on Connor Rangi. His 2nd place race in round one was the talk in the pits. After rolling at the opening meeting here a strong showing to back up the 2nd would be needed and he didn’t disappoint. With a 2nd and a 5th in his heats, he easily qualified. Alicia and Kris were the other locals to qualify for the final. The final had a couple of cautions for spins, but all of the cars went without any major damage the entire meeting. Steve Duff Jr from Christchurch took top spot and Luke Keegan finished 2nd under huge pressure from round one winner Daniel Anderson from Cromwell. Gerard was the top local coming in 4th. MacLauchlan was next home in 5th spot while Rangi was in 7th. They travel to Woodford Glen in Christchurch for round three next week. The Streetstocks had their opening teams challenge against the Canterbury Cobras. The Nelson Knights were up against a formidable southern team that had a tad more pace than the local boys could muster - the visitors established an early lead to keep the locals at bay. A huge field of Productions turned up for the first round of their club champs. The racing was kept pretty tidy for such a huge field, however, the mix of front and rear drive cars made race lines difficult to maintain at times. Race wins went to Eddie Franz, Blenheim’s Brett Allan and David Allan winning one each. Franz holds the points lead heading into the next round. The Youth Ministocks returned to the track. There were no visiting drivers, so the locals battled amongst each other to establish the pecking order. After three races and three different winners, the field remains very even. Raiden Hearne took advantage of a good grid to run away with heat one, Brayden Nell returned to form with a heat two win while Brayden Skurr, who was penalised in heat two, went on a mission in heat three - storming away for the win. The Tasman Thunder went down to Christchurch for the Mainland Teams champs. The trophy has eluded them over the past few seasons and this was the case again this year. They lost their opening race to the Greymouth Grizzlies, then were relegated from winning their 2nd race against the Canterbury Crushers by the referee. They won their final race against the Southern Spartan’s to finish 3rd overall. The Super Stocks were boosted with the return of Dale McKenzie. Although they were racing hit-to-pass, most were content to just get valuable laps in. The field was very even - the calibre of machinery far outweighing the number on the track. McKenzie was pretty low key considering his return provided two heat wins with Brett Nicholls picking up the other. They are the feature grade at the next meeting on December 2nd. The Nelson Tigers face the Palmerston North Panthers for the Challenge cup. The Tigers are still to announce their line-up, but plenty of work is being done in the background.

Talented young Nelson rider Ari Scott emerged as a genuine prospect when he showed strength on the hills and perfect timing to finish third in the Abel Tasman Cycling Challenge on Saturday. The 16-year-old was not expecting to feature in a strong line-up of elite and under-23 riders in the 155km race from Richmond to the top of Sandy Bay Hill in Marahau and back. But the Nelson College student surprised everyone, including himself, when he rode across to the three-rider breakaway and then challenged for the lead in the final stages. Ari made a big move on the return journey, riding across to Team Skoda’s Joel Yates, who had been joined by Brett Grieve and Joshua Aldridge just out of Motueka. The four riders stayed in front of the chasing peloton with Joel making his winning break entering Hill St to win in 3hr 53min 56sec with Brett second in 3hr 54min 16sec, just two seconds clear of Ari. “I could see that Joel had gone and the Team Skoda guys were

Photo: Chris Symes/Shuttersport. sitting on the front and weren’t going to chase him, so I knew I had to go,” Ari says. “I’d felt pretty good on the hills so I went for it and managed to get across with the two other riders. “We were together until Hill St and I attacked, but Joel just rolled over the top of me and took off. But I was really pleased with third – that’s easily my best result against elite riders.” Although Ari was surprised by his ride, he says he has “improved

really quickly” since teaming up with UK-based coach Sam Lindsay. “I used to do my own thing but now my training is more structured and scientific and it’s making a difference. I’m also using a power meter now so I can train in the right zone, so it all helps.” Ari, who was sponsored by Guytons and receives support from Village Cycles, won’t have any time to reflect on his success as he heads north this weekend for the

160km Round Taupo Cycle Challenge. After that, he will be back into his own age group in the Junior Tour of Manawatu from December 9-10. Nelson riders also featured in the age group results of Saturday’s race with Warrick Spence finishing fifth overall and winning the silver category in 3hr 57min 15sec. Seamus Ryan won the silverplus category in 4hr 1min 46sec while Niamh Fisher-Black won

the junior girls race in 4hr 23min 11sec, with Jannine Blackmore of Christchurch the winning female in 4hr 17min 50sec. Richmond’s Henry Jaine won the inaugural ITM Super TT Mountainbike race held in conjunction with the Abel Tasman Cycle Challenge, ahead of Waimea College student Cameron Jones. Susie Wood won the women’s race which featured four laps around Silvan Forest Mountainbike Park.
