EDITOR’S NOTE
Painful, tired, heavy legs? Would you love to wear shorts again?
Amy Brinkman knew things were working out in her family when her teenage foster daughter texted her from her bedroom to say she’d never felt so safe and loved. This month, as we celebrate Mother’s Day (May 13, in case it’s slipped your mind), N-Mag tells Amy’s story of sharing her love beyond her own biological family. Also, in line with our philosophy of bringing you positive local stories, we look at the
rise of e-bikes - which are helping more people get out and about in our region, whether it’s for their daily commute, taking a longer ride along the Great Taste Trail or getting a boost on the mountain bike trails. As always, if there’s a Nelson story or personality you’d like to read about in Nelson Magazine, please do let us know. Email sue@nelsonmag.co.nz or drop us a text message on 021 223 7131.

NIGHT TRAINS: What a gem the Tahunanui Modellers Society is. Last month the society hosted its annual ‘night run’ the weekend after daylight savings. The area was filled with young children in their pyjamas excited to ride the ‘rails in the dark’.
HOSPITAL FOOD: Yes, you read that right. The cafe food at Nelson Hospital has jumped up several levels in the past few months. Previously sandwiches in plastic and relatively bland food has been swapped with delicious salads and healthy options. Makes meals much more enjoyable when visiting loved ones, or for staff at the hospital.
BEER AND RECORDS: The name is Family Jewels but its also turning out to be a jewel for Nelson. Based in the Freehouse Pub on Collingwood St, the record store is the perfect place to enjoy a beer, browse through some vinyl records and have a yarn with music-man Grant Smithies, who owns the joint with his wife Josephine Cachemaille.
RESTORED GABLES AT SCHOOL OF MUSIC: Of course it’s not called the School of Music anymore but while the name for the Nelson Centre of Musical Arts -- which was offically re-opened last month -- is new, the gables at the top of its entrance are a blast from the past. The gables were a part of the original building when it was opened in 1901 but were taken down in the 1970s over fears that could fall down during an earthquake. The features have been re-created using photographes of the originals. Photo: NCMA.

on the We spotted Breigh and Kendyl on their lunchbreak. The sisters each have their own style. Breigh’s dress, which draws comments whenever she wears it, is the label Tuesday from Trouble & Fox. Her jacket was from a discount shop and her “mini gumboots” were won in a Facebook competition. Breigh’s earrings are from Trouble & Fox, her bag is from Farmers, sunnies are from Urban Beach, and new wedding band from Benjamin Black. Breigh says her style is eclectic, a mix of classic cuts, a little bit French with a few unique or bold pieces thrown in. There is plenty of navy, black and grey basics in
her wardrobe and a ton of yoga pants and printed dresses. “The documentary ‘The True Cost’ really opened my eyes. I used to be pretty impulsive with shopping but have made a conscious effort to buy more investment pieces, including good quality thrift finds, and reduce my contribution to clothing waste.” She says she gets plenty of wear out of her white t-shirt and blue cotton jump suit, and uses a coloured silk scarf around her neck or as a headband, with big earrings to finish an outfit which needs a zhoosh.
Kendyl is rocking a vintage Guess t-shirt and Levi Jeans, both from Emporium Vintage in Wellington. Her Mules are from Number One Shoes. Her glasses, which ooze cool, are from Gizmos. The necklace of her name she is wearing was custom-made for her as a gift from friends in Wellington when she moved back to Nelson. She says her style changes depending on her mood. “One day I’ll be in a silk dress and heels and
the next I’ll be in my boyfriend’s clothes with sneakers on.” Kendyl’s wardrobe consists of different variations of jeans and t-shirts and her most worn item at the moment is her oversized camo bomber jacket. When it comes to shopping Kendyl says, “I don’t buy something unless I love it, and I don’t purchase anything I have to think about buying.” BY SARAH BOARD

WOODFORD LANE Montebello
Happiness on a hilltop in a compact modern home STORY BY JOYA DEVINE | PHOTOS: THE PROPERTY PILOTS
When Carmen and Willy Snowden decided to help their daughter Olivia get into her own home, the obvious choice was to ask Carmen’s cousin Garry Nott, owner of the well-established building company Tasman Homes, for ideas. “They were looking for a section, so I pointed them in the direction of one I’d seen on Woodford Lane,” says Garry. “I said, you could do something amazing with that. So they bought it, and said ‘right – let’s do it!” One year later, Olivia is now happily settled in her home on the hill with its picturesque views out across Tasman Bay and its quiet location. “It’s homely because it’s not like any other house; it’s designed so it feels like it’s your own,” which is the hallmark of Tasman Homes, who build quality new homes that reflect people’s individual styles. The
company will work with your plans, and can team you up with an architectural designer that suits your style, to create something truly unique. For this build, Garry Nott teamed the Snowden’s up with local designer, David Gunter from Coastal Designs. “Dave’s is all about what the client wants.” “I love my home’s square, modern design, its coloursteel cladding, its cedarwood panels, and wooden balusters; everything about it has been carefully thought through,” says Olivia who works as flight attendant with Air New Zealand. “The location is great; I’m so close to work now, and I love the amazing views from my living space with the, especiallydesigned window seat; I can see right across the ocean to the Abel Tasman and can see the snow on the mountains!
22 FEATURE
It’s the additional touches which make it really special; in the master bedroom upstairs, they put in a pop-out window to bring in the morning light, the downstairs bedrooms are very spacious and have lots of storage; each one opens out onto a private deck.” Aside from Garry’s expertise, Olivia is also very fortunate to have parents who own Guthrie Bowron in Motueka. “Selecting paint colours and floorings has been easy because Mum is an interior designer. We went for a really modern kitchen, with black cabinetry and a laminate marble benchtop with laminate tiles, black tap wear and copper handles. Dad provided all the flooring, including vinyl for the open plan living space; it is wooden timber laminate - an engineered one, which was bit of a ‘guinea pig’ for my Dad! We chose plain walls for simplicity, and to be able to add character to with artwork.” “It was a really enjoyable build,” says Garry. “It’s a smaller home, so we had to use the space more efficiently and the results have been really pleasing. With a sloping hillside section, like the Snowden’s, it pays to go with a company like ours because we have the expertise to deal with
any geo-tech issues, which can save you money in the long term, and by teaming up our clients with architectural designers, we can create homes which are uniquely their own. Olivia’s two storey home looks great inside and out. For the exterior we used vertical long-run corrugated, matte black iron, with intermittent cedarwood panels which combines well with the windsor grey coloursteel roofing. We also used macrocarpa 45 x 45 balusters on the bridge which was carried through onto the interior staircase. “It was a really enjoyable build,” says Garry. “It’s a smaller home, so we had to use the space more efficiently and the results have been really pleasing. At Tasman Homes we encourage people to bring us in early into the design process, to use our expertise of working on difficult sites, to help them achieve their desired result for a realistic budget. By calling us when you first buy a section, it can save you a lot of money. As with Olivia’s new build, it shows it is achievable for young people today to get into a great home without having to take out a huge mortgage.” For more information go to TasmanHomes.nz
