Painful, tired, heavy legs? Would you love to wear shorts again?
A confession: we eat a lot of mince at our house. And chicken breasts and salad. Some people love cooking and some of us cook because we have to eat. Ceviche, maftoul, dukkah - it’s not that I don’t love eating these things - it’s just that I don’t seem to care enough to want to learn how to make them and to try to interest my deeply fussy children in trying them. I’d subsist on a rotation of five meals forever and ever, but some people have better ideas. We look at how they’re adding inspiration back to dinner in our story on pages 12-13. We’re exploring Nelson’s ‘pay it forward’ culture and see how the community is giving a helping hand to those in need - whether it be food, clothes or a session with a professional photographer. We also put our ear to the ground of Nelson’s music scene. Writer Amy Ridout asks whether less stage space means it’s not as vibrant as it has been, or whether it’s true what one busy local muso says - we’re still spoiled here. Joanna Davis

Star Singer Robinson is well on her way to international stardom but it all started at school in Nelson. She speaks to Grant Smithies about her journey.
Dumbledore and Malfoy, Gryffindor and Slytherin. On the day I talk to her, former Nelson schoolgirl Anna Robinson has a head full of wizards and magic. She’s just stepped off the plane in Sydney, after an epic flight from London. “I watched all seven Harry Potter movies, back-to-back, to distract myself from that horrible flight,” she tells me via cell-phone from across the Tasman. Anna, now just known by her performing name “Robinson”, is living mostly out of a suitcase these days, travelling between Nelson and Auckland, Australia and LA, New York and London. “Not that I’m complaining….” No, and why would she? Robinson is living her dream. She says she “came out of the womb wanting to be a singer” and now she recently recorded her latest single Nothing To Regret alongside Lorde producer Joel Little. It’s a huge, glossy, irresistible pop confection, the kind of song that lodges in your head as soon as you hear it. An earlier single, Crave You, has had well over a million listens on music streaming site, Spotify.
Robinson has been signed to the publishing arm of Universal Music as a songwriter, and Sony Music has signed her as an international recording artist. There is no doubt she is on her way. But it all started here in Nelson. Born in Westport, Robinson taught herself piano and guitar, moving here with her mother and sister during her high school years. Her talent was recognised early by Garin College music teacher Kyle Proffit, who encouraged her to enter the Smokefreerockquest. Robinson performed in a duo called ELAE alongside good friend Olivia Nott, younger sister of Caleb and Georgia Nott of Broods fame. Auckland music manager Ashley Page saw some of those audition videos online. “When I finished high school, Ashley called and asked if I had any demo songs. I remember trying to sound all calm and collected when he phoned up, but inside, I was about to explode! It was crazy, to want something so badly, and for it to finally seem like it was going to happen.” Now 21, Robinson moved to
Auckland in 2016, and has spent the last three years honing her craft. Mainly, that has been learning how to write good songs.
“So taking that as my stage name was a way of paying tribute to him. His name kind of lives on, in a way, through this music. Thanks, Dad!”
It wasn’t always fun, to be honest. When I left high school, most of my friends went to uni, but I spent a couple of pretty lonely years, just focusing on my music.”
Robinson admits to still being stunned by her success. It was it at Garin College for an NCEA music project and that was the demo she sent to Ashley Page.
She dropped the “Anna” from her name to stand out from all those other struggling singer/ songwriters using their real names. Perhaps this is a good omen. After all, you know you’ve made it when you only need one name - think of Prince, Bowie, Britney, Madonna and, of course, Lorde. And, now, you know… Robinson? She admits it’s a “pretty strange” stage name. She was brainstorming ideas with her manager and he suggested it. “At first, I thought it was awful! Who wants to be known by just their last name? But the more I thought about it, the more it made sense.” Her dad passed away when she was 11 and that loss had a huge effect on her growing up.
“It was written in Nelson when I was a teenager,” she says. “It’s amazing to think that more than a million people have heard it now around the world.” It’s a high-pressure game, she admits and says you have to look after yourself, and take regular restorative breaks with friends and family. “Mum’s been messaging, like – ‘when are you coming home?’ So I plan to do that as soon as possible. There are lots of things I really miss about Nelson. I used to really love going for swims up the Aniseed Valley, and whenever I come home to Nelson, I make my boyfriend and all my friends puff up the Barnicoat Walkway with me. “It’s so beautiful. You walk in up Marsden Valley then head up to where all the paragliders jump off the ridge at the top. You look right out over Tasman Bay, and you know you’re home.”

on the For On the Street this month we captured a woman who makes kids smile as Flossy the Balloon Lady, and another who makes adults smile with her skills as a hairdresser. They both spoke with Sarah Board about their fashion styles. Felicity’s style is a bit eclectic, with everything in her wardrobe having its own place and things just “going together.” She says her wardrobe consists mostly of dresses and tunics. “I will often wear a plain coloured base paired with complementary patterned items that pick up that colour. Oh, and I’m loving wearing a denim jacket with a rockabilly dress, or actually any dress at the moment.” You’ll usually find Felicity dressed as brightly as her colourful balloons she twists into all sorts of wonderful creations. Today’s outfit is one she says
she feels good in and is functional as well. “My well-worn boots are from Soul, the dress was a bargain buy for $15 from the Pretty Smart Sale at Stoke Hall. I won my bag at a silent auction for the Ark, it is from Robyn Reynolds. My necklace was from Eyebright. I bought my cardigan from Frock n Soul to wear with a Flossie costume, but it didn’t quite go. I love it because there are a lot of different colours in it, so I can wear it with a range of pieces.” Felicity finds most of her clothes at op shops or Savemart but loves both Frock n Soul and Mariposa.
Michelle was dressed for work when we snapped her. She is wearing a dress from Salasai which was bought online. “I love the fabric and that it has pockets. I saw a girl wearing the dress while in Christchurch and I had to have it, so I searched everywhere for it! My shoes are Julian Danger from Shine, earrings are from Trouble and Fox. They were a Christmas present from my daughters.” Michelle describes her style as simple and easy. “I have a lot of things from the same labels, and mostly wear dresses and comfy shoes. I generally

only wear heels for special occasions. I have a lot of shoes. My friends call me Imelda (after Imelda Marcos)” Michelle says shopping is something she loves to do. “My husband would say I’m a very good shopper. My wardrobe is bursting. I’m getting better at thinking my purchases through first though. My favourite local shops are Trouble and Fox, Shine, Urban Beach and the Rock Box. I know what suits me and my body shape which makes shopping easier.”

“It’s not a large section, which defined how the house was designed,” says Mike Greer Homes Nelson Director and Architectural Designer, James Petersen. “There’s a real trend with people going for smaller homes on smaller sites, with a focus on quality; for this build it was about how best to use the site to get all those reserve views, and it also shows that 160 square metres is an ok size to work with.” No 5 Village Lane has many standout features which made

While spring gardens feature delightful flowering shrubs and bulbs; summer blooms bright with annuals, and autumn boasts perennials at their best, don’t overlook the rewards that winter brings with shrubs, whose tiny flowers pack a powerful perfume, berries that light up the garden, variegated and golden evergreens, or bark that glows on dull days. Don’t be too eager to clear flower beds. Some plants, like cobra lilies will continue to perform by holding a “torch” of berries long after the flowers have gone, while the seed-heads of sedum retain some colour into winter, and many grasses take on an elegant aspect when dusted with snow or frost. Globe artichokes and cardoons are highrise perennial vegetables. Plant them in the back of a flower bed where their 2m dry flower stalks can be left until spring. Cardiocrinum giganteum. The bulbs of the giant Himalayan lily die after the scented white flowers are spent but the 2m stems of fat seed pods remain, and – if you can bear to pick them – are great for flower arrangements. Small offsets around the dead bulb will grow to flowering size in a couple of years but seed-sown bulbs may take seven years to flower. There are other ways of ensuring interest in the winter garden. Deciduous trees usually drop their leaves when the weather cools, but an exception is the copper beech, which clings to its foliage through the winter. Although very attractive, it is suitable only for large gardens, as its eventual height can be 35m. Grown in sun, golden conifers come into their own in winter. Smaller varieties range from 1m to 2.5m. Swane’s Gold will grow to 8m but is narrow enough to add height to a small garden. For a native touch, try the lovely mini rimu ‘Charisma’, or golden totora ‘Aureus’ which can be used as a hedge or topiary specimen.

Purple is a trickier winter colour, but because it is lightened with cream, native Pseudowintera colorata ‘Red Leopard’ is a choice shrub. Alternatively, cream and green Griselinia littoralis ‘Dairy Cream’ and ‘Dixon’s Cream’ are two of the lightest, brightest broadleafs. Many dogwoods are small trees, but two shrub-sized varieties are tops for winter. They are Cornus alba and C. sericea, grown mainly for their vivid winter stem colour. ‘Sibirica’ grows to 2m, has white flowers in summer, good autumn foliage colour, then bright red stems in winter. ‘Flaviramea’ has yellow stems, with white flowers and attractive leaves in autumn. Grown side by side, they look splendid. Winter berries are mainly the province of shrubs like Japonica and Berberis, but the Rowans and variegated holly are hardy small trees that hold their fruit until the birds have exhausted other food sources. Look around and you’ll be surprised at the attractions of a winter garden.
