EDITOR’S LOCAL HOT and NOT NOTE There’s a distinct chill in the air in the mornings now as autumn draws in. I notice it on the days I walk my children to school along Collingwood Street. Crossing the Maitai, the cold seems to rise off the water. My 10-year-old son wears shorts year round, but we mere mortals are beginning to cover up. Some of us are also starting to spend more time indoors. So this month, we’ve chosen a “home and living” theme for your Nelson magazine. See our story about the attractions of apartment living (p16) and meet one family who are making their home onboard a launch at the marina (p6). We also take a look inside one of the stately homes featuring in the Cancer Society’s Heritage Homes tour this month (p12). And, because this magazine is about celebrating our city, each month we’re profiling a Nelsonian making us proud. This month, it’s inspirational fitness trainer Claire Dallison (p11). The strength of ‘Mumma Claire’

For 20 years, Nelson’s Claire Dallison has worked with the country’s best athletes to ensure they operate at the top level. Here, she speaks about her love of basketball, of travelling the world representing her country, and the realities of working in a maledominated industry. STORY BY JONTY DINE | PHOTOS TIM CUFF

Before top athlete Josh Bloxham approached Claire Dallison, he was told that he would never play basketball again. The New Zealand Breaker was training when he suffered a fracture in his foot. But it was so serious that doctors doubted whether he could return to the sport he loved. However Claire, a Nelson strength and conditioning coach, had Josh back playing within nine months. “We went through some fairly intense rehab,” she says. “I had to research it fully to make sure we did the right thing, but we got him there.” Claire has worked with the Tall Blacks, the Breakers, Paralympic athletes and the Nelson Giants – helping keep our top players in peak condition. The applied fitness tutor at NMIT has done all this while being questioned on her ability as a woman, to train men. “People don’t expect a woman to be doing strength and conditioning,” Claire says. Claire says she has always had a passion for sport and started her career as a hockey player. “My love for basketball came completely by accident,” she says. Tall Blacks coach Nenad Vučinić was training his team for the Olympics and heard Claire was a bit of a “hard old tart” so asked her to personally train him. After a few of the personal sessions, Vučinić liked what he saw and then insisted that Claire train the whole team. That job led Claire to being able to travel the world in her role with the Tall Blacks. She has been to Estonia, Italy, Turkey, Spain and Greece – all for various championship basketball tournaments.

She says it has always been a challenge working in men’s sport. “It’s an area that women aren’t pushed into, I don’t know if it’s a perception that because we aren’t as strong, we can’t train strength.” Claire says she does not experience that prejudice in Nelson because she is wellknown. But nationally and internationally, the sexism is palpable. “I turned up at a tournament in Turkey and met someone who I had been communicating with for several weeks and he was totally shocked. He had no concept that I could possibly be a woman.” Often, Claire was the only female at the whole event. “Because I had coaches who totally backed me, when I went into situations like that it didn’t take long for them to realise I was good at what I did. It’s about who you gather around you. I managed to break the mold because the coaching staff completely trusted me.” Claire has trained many of New Zealand’s best basketballers from an early age including one the country’s most wellknown players, Mika Vukona, since he was 16. “Mika is a freak, the kind of guy that is just physiologically weird and amazing to train. It’s a bit of a privilege to be there at the end and help him continue to play for a couple more years.” Claire says getting to know her athletes as people is a special aspect of her job. Affectionately known as mum, ‘Mumma Claire’ or ‘Claire bear’, Claire says she tries to create a family environment within the teams she works with. “They respect that I push them hard and

make them chunder but I’ll still bring them a carrot cake, so it’s a nice balance.” Claire says she often won’t charge for that kind of work because she wants the athletes to be able to perform at their peak. “I’m not very good at charging people. Sometimes I get paid in meat or sheep shit for the garden, but I just want to see people train well.” She says her emotional highlight over her career was the 2014 world basketball championships in Spain. The Tall Blacks went down to eventual champions the USA 98-71 in their final outing. “At the end of the last game they delivered a haka to us in the changing rooms, it was fairly astounding. I don’t expect adulation, I just want my boys to play well.”

Just before Christmas last year, Bruce Design and Build completed the construction of a stunning, contemporary home on Citrus Lane, on a particularly challenging hillside location. The outcome was far better than the proud owners Sherryl and Russ Coles could ever imagine, with spectacular views across the bay to Rabbit Island and a fabulous outlook over some of Nelson’s lush green city hills. “The challenge was maximising the size of the house,” says Russell Bruce, owner of Bruce Design and Build. “It’s a small section, so we were maximising daylight angles, and site coverage. Our company has become very experienced at dealing with challenging sites; we’ve had ten good years doing hillside sections.”

In late 2016 Sherryl and Russ purchased the section at 38 Citrus Lane, and because they loved every other Bruce Design home in the vicinity, they approached Russell Bruce, who they knew had a solid reputation in the building industry. “Russell Bruce’s houses are very distinctive; it’s the clean modern lines, the homes are stunning, yet practical,” says Russ. So we arranged a meeting with Russell and he made everything so easy.” “The design came together smoothly; the biggest challenge was creating a multi-levelled four bedroom home on difficult, sloping terrain,” says Russell. As the build progressed, one Friday evening Sherryl and Russ visited the site and were stunned by what they saw.

“Goodness, we can see the water and Rabbit Island!” Further on, they realised they had a view from every room. Sherryl and Russ Coles live very full lives. Sherryl works at Nelson Hospital as a receptionist in the children’s ward and Russ works at ‘Orange Dog,’ a commercial printing company. Russ is originally from Invercargill, and Sherryl is from Christchurch, and between them they have six children and nine grandchildren, so when they moved up to Nelson they wanted a house to accommodate their steady stream of visitors. “An entertainment area, something with a good flow, I love to cook – we got everything we wanted here at Citrus Lane,” says Sherryl. At Bruce Design and Build “no two houses are the same, and the clients are fully involved in making choices for their build,” says Russell. Sherryl and Russ were consulted throughout the whole process, right down to choosing a colour for their front door. “We chose bright yellow which works well with black – and besides, it goes perfectly with ‘Citrus Lane!” says Sherryl. “We also appreciated there were no hidden costs, and

they were committed to completing the build within a specified timeframe,” say Russ. And sure enough, it was. Sherryl and Russ had been patiently living in a caravan for the duration of the build, but became concerned it might not be completed in time for Christmas when their throngs of relatives were due to descend. “I said to Russell - if we are not in at Christmas, you’d better clear out some of the rooms at your place,” says Sherryl. “But bang on a year since it was started, we were able to to move in on December 13th!” For the team at Bruce Design, the build was an enjoyable one, in which they sourced most of their building materials locally such as the grappa hardwood for the large profile decking and solid rimu wooden slats near the entrance way, with matching deep rimu shelving in the living spaces. “We also used Flashman Flashing systems on the exterior, which is ideal for New Zealand’s extreme weather conditions, especially exposed sites,” says Russell. Meanwhile Sherryl and Russ had fun choosing the kitchen, bathroom and

general décor; “Cooper Webley was a stand-out for us - we love our kitchen! And Hubbers Flooring gave us great advice regarding the colour scheme. “Our choice of white walls everywhere was a bit glary to start with,” laughed Sherryl. “But they provide the perfect backdrop for our artwork and carefully selected furniture.

Because we have wanted more of a minimalistic feel in order to appreciate the clean lines of our home, we have been sparing with the number of pictures we have hung up.” Sherryl and Russ are happily settled in their new home and are thoroughly enjoying “the views, the quiet location, the spaciousness, the clean lines

Autumn is a great time in the garden. The weather is still warm enough to enjoy being outdoors, and the work you put in now will pay off during winter and spring. It’s a great time to plant as the soil is warm and moist, allowing plants to be well established before winter arrives. Daffodil bulbs are in store now and tulips will arrive throughout April, as well as hyacinths, anemones, freesias and ranuncula. For colour in your winter garden, nothing beats cyclamen.
