Nelson Airport’s new premium carparking system is not a case of penny pinching but more a symptom of the airport “growing up,” its chief executive says.

The new carparking layout is part of the airport’s $32 million upgrade and has only been around for a short time. It sees visitors charged different rates for how close they park to the terminal.

The value carparks, which are furthest away, are $2 an hour and $60 a week, the main carparks are

$3 an hour or $84 a week and the new premium car parks are $5 or $140 a week.

However, the move has caused some confusion with much of the premium park being empty as people don’t know that it is available. Others have called it “revenue gathering” and don’t

agree with the idea.

John and Linda Locke didn’t know what the premium parking was when they arrived at the airport on Friday.

“Luckily, we found a park because normally it’s really busy, but we are way over there. We don’t agree with having to pay more for

premium parking.”

“I could understand if it was something like Auckland airport where it is a one minute walk versus a 10 minute walk but here when you are just one row closer in premium, there’s no point in

paying the extra,” says another local traveller, who did not want to be named.

While the airport’s chief executive Rob Evans admits they have some work to do around the messaging of the new layout, he says it is all about offering choice.

“What we are trying to do here is grow up as an airport and provide differentiated services and products.”

Nelson is the fourth airport that Rob has been involved in and says that the new parking is “airport planning 101”.

The upgrade for the Nelson City and Tasman District councilowned airport is not being funded by ratepayers.

“But you also wouldn’t expect it to be full – it’s like the first class on an airplane.”

Rob says there is some work to do around making sure people are aware of the changes.

“There are some teething things that aren’t done or are not quite right.”

However, he says the airport

is always thinking about the customer experience and very responsive to feedback.

Recently there had been concern about the lack of bike racks at the terminal entrance, forcing riders to lock their bikes to letterboxes and posts. Rob says another bike rack will soon be put in, and eventually a dedicated bike stand, and bike lane will also be created.

The premium parks are also now free for disabled motorists after initially being part of the premium offering.

The airport is also looking to put in number plate recognition in the carparks – meaning people won’t need to take tickets from the barrier.

The next part of the terminal is due to open in October, followed by areas for Air New Zealand cargo and car rentals.

“We are looking to grow up into what good airports look like.

We want to be the best regional airport in New Zealand that’s our mission statement,” Rob says.

He says, there are always going to be people that complain - even about the colour of the terminal and the use of timber.

“We always willing to take the feedback but want to keep on pushing on with our vision.”

Two key pieces of Nelson roading will not receive funding from NZTA for noise-reducing road seal, despite them being identified as areas that are detrimental to the health of residents who live near them.

NZTA completed a business case for what was intended to be a national noise reduction programme, with two stretches of State Highway 6 in Nelson being selected to receive funding as the initiative moved ahead.

Last year, Nelson City Council’s Regional Transport Committee (RTC) was asked by NTZA to vary their Regional Land Transport Plan to include capacity for the noise management programme.

At a committee meeting last week, NZTA representatives said that national modelling had shown that Whakatu Drive and Atawhai Drive between Haven Rd and Todd Bush Rd met the threshold of being detrimental to the health of residents who lived next to them. However, changes in priorities meant that the funding was no longer available.

Chair of the Regional Transport Committee Mike Rutledge says it was a “real disappointment” and it seems like Nelson is being overlooked.

Photo: Charles Anderson. the effects of the government’s aversion to spending money on state highways but there’s a real difference between a state highway in Nelson and Richmond compared to the Waikato Expressway, for example.”

Mike says state highways that run through provincial and rural New Zealand should be treated differently to those that are simply bypassing towns.

“If you don’t spend money on state highways, you’re not spending money on the health, safety and liveability of Nelson, which is a real problem.”

NZTA now says it is not known when the noise reduction business case will progress, or if it will even receive funding but it is now “unlikely to occur in the near future”.

NZTA representative Steve Higgs says there has been a “significant change” in the government’s priorities with a heavy focus now on safety.

“It’s not to say that we aren’t doing anything in this area, we are developing a strategy but that will take some time.”

Mayor Rachel Reese said in the meeting that the “cold call” to tell them that health was being traded off over safety was more than disappointing, it was “poor planning”.

“We have got a roading network that is delivering poor health outcomes in terms of noise to many New Zealanders and on the basis of the modelling, the cost of trying to address that health issue is actually too expensive for the NZTA budgets.”

Centre of NZ moves: It’s dubious if the centre of the country was ever really atop Botanical Hill in Nelson but now it’s official. GNS Science researcher Jenny Black has recalculated the country’s geographic focus, due to the United Nations now recognising that New Zealand covers about 6 million square kilometres, with 95 per cent of that being sea floor.

The new geographical centre of New Zealand - if you include the extended continental shelf - is about 11km northwest of Greytown in the Wairarapa. But that won’t change the name of Nelson’s own “centre of New Zealand”.

Extinction rebellion invades council Jonty Dine Nelson City Council was invaded by an army fighting for the planet’s future last week.

About 20 members of ‘The Extinction Rebellion’ marched into council and lay on the floor in protest against climate change inaction.

Organisers say the act was a

visual representation of “the plight of all life on earth if we do not take immediate action”.

Spokesman James Moran says we are losing an average of 200 plant, insect, bird and mammal species per day as a result of climate change.

“Without urgent action, there will be no future for us, or our children.”

The group was demanding

Nelson City Council declares a climate emergency.

“Government and local councils must tell the truth and halt biodiversity loss.”

This would prioritise reducing carbon emissions and educating the public on the need for urgent change.

“Our protests will continue to be more dramatic until our demands are met.”

Council were unable to respond to requests for comments but the protesters left peacefully after a time.

James says people continue to keep their head in the sand or just assume the world will always be the same as it has been.

“It is changing dramatically, there will be no hope for our kids and maybe no hope for us, it could be that soon.”

Liquidators seek legal advice: The directors of Nelson Reliance Engineering have gone on holiday instead of answering liquidators’ questions about debts of nearly $4 million. Nevil Basalaj and his spouse Amber have gone overseas despite the business owing creditors millions. More than 170 companies from across the country were among unsecured creditors, owed $3.2 million of that total.

Liquidators are now seeking legal advice about their options.

Mayoral contest heats up: Nelson city councillor Mel Courtney says he will run for mayor in October’s local body election. The Nelson Weekly has surveyed all sitting councillors to ask their intentions for the elections. Mel was the only one to say that he was definitely running. Present mayor Rachel Reese has not confirmed she will run yet.

Councillor Tim Skinner was also thinking about the mayoralty. Every other councillor, other than Stuart Walker, says they will be running for council again.

The road from Nairobi to Nelson may have been a long one but has led Steve Maina to head of the Anglican Church in the region.

Steve is now the Bishop-elect of the Anglican Diocese of Nelson which covers the top of the South Island – from Greymouth to Kaikoura.

He made the move to New Zealand 10 years ago to take on the role of national director of the Anglican Mission Organisation in Christchurch. He was then invited to put himself forward for the Bishop role after the previous Bishop, Richard Ellena, retired at the end of last year.

After Steve takes up the role, he will be the first Bishop of African descent in New Zealand.

He hopes the position will be about letting people be open to

having faith in their lives.

“I think New Zealand is becoming very secular and individualistic and I feel there is something we can offer in that space as Christians,” he says. “We have a message of hope in a world that is very fragmented.”

Steve describes he and his wife Watiri as ‘Kenyan Kiwis” who will soon move up to Nelson to take on the role in August.

“My vision is to see faith having a bearing in society. We think to

be healthy we need a good job and a good education, but we have forgotten about the spiritual aspect.

“A lot of people feel when you have got everything going for you why do you need God? Then something happens that can completely fragment our world.

Steve was raised in the church with a father and grandfather who were Anglican minsters in

Nairobi.

“I saw the love, our home was open to everyone,” he says.

“There was always room for people from the street with a big pot of food. That has shaped in myself a Christianity that is open to others.”

He says his goal is to let people know that they don’t need to be lonely.

“New Zealand is too small for people to feel like nobody cares and nobody loves.”

It looks like a burger, it tastes like a burger, but rest assured, the new offering at Burger Culture is something entirely different.

The top of Trafalgar St eatery is one of the first in the country to offer a meat-free burger patty that treads the border of what is possible with food science.

The Beyond Meat Burger is a patty created from pea proteins and beetroot extract, which represents a breakthrough in the global plant-based food revolution that has rapidly spread around the globe. And soon it will be in Nelson.

“For me it’s about giving something that meat eaters can get behind,” says Burger Culture’s Chris Williams. “You are probably not going to know the difference

and, if you do, then you aren’t going to complain about it.”

Chris says the motivation behind offering the patty might seem strange for a company where meat is the staple.

“As a young team of people we are all aware for what is going on and what needs to be done. We need to cut down on our carbon footprint and the damage that farming is doing to the planet. If we can be a small catalyst for that then that’s great.”

He hopes it might allow carnivores to cut down on their meat eating and allow room for other options of their diet.

“I never not want to eat meat again, that’s not what it’s about.

But it’s an opportunity to stay ahead of a trend that is going to come around because the world can’t keep up with the amount of meat we are eating.”

Chris says the restaurant has 300 trial patties that will go on sale

in May. They will be offered as a choice in any of their burgers and will likely be slightly more expensive than a usual burger, because of their cost to import.

“Hopefully though, as it becomes more common that cost can come down.”

In the meantime, he invites patrons to come and try the patty and see what they think.

“I reckon you will be pretty surprised.”

Hunt for Church Steps driver Staff Reporter

Police are hunting for the perpetrator of an audacious manoeuvre that saw a Hilux Surf drive down the Church Steps, smashing historic stone posts in the process.

CCTV images from the area show the car making the trip down the stairs before driving off. It occurred last Sunday at 1am. The car damaged the steps and several stone posts.

The trail of damage began near the top of the steps, with chunks of the

granite stairs gouged out.

Skid marks were then visible in front of the first column that was broken off its base, but not as severely damaged as the next column, which was knocked completely from its base and smashed on the ground.

The area was cordoned off by Nelmac the following day with repair work beginning immediately.

Police say anyone with information can contact them anonymously on 0800 555 111 or can speak to Senior Constable James Green.

Help needed for new rescue boat Staff Reporter

TThe Nelson Volunteer Coastguard needs community support to buy a replacement rescue boat to help meet increasing demand.

The current boat, an 8.5-metre Naiad bought second-hand, is about 25 years old and experience has proven it too small and lacking essential features, Nelson Volunteer Coastguard vicepresident Emmett Mills says.

It is not an all-weather boat, with no fully enclosed wheelhouse, and there is potential in extreme weather for it to be unable to go out when it is needed most.

The size of the boat is a constraint, he says, as there is no space to do proper chart work and coordinate more complicated multiboat searches.

There is also no sheltered space to keep people who have been rescued protected from the elements, with stretcher-borne patients currently transported on the open aft deck - no matter what the weather.

A replacement boat design has been identified and so far about $400,000 has been raised to go towards its $1.3 million cost.

The new boat will be 11.5 metres long and be able to handle extreme weather. It will have an enclosed

It will also be diesel-powered, compared to the current boat, which has a twin-engine petrol unit. This means its range would be extended as petrol is not available on the water in Nelson, which is a logistics problem. It will also have a heavier towing capacity and higher observation points.

The local coastguard’s operational area of responsibility is one of the

largest in the country, covering the Tasman and Golden bays, from 12 nautical miles north of Stephens Island, around Farewell Spit to Kahurangi Point on the West Coast. It’s also a back-up vessel in case of a major event in Marlborough.

Emmett says the organisation receives no operational or capital funding from central government, with all its financial needs met through the fundraising efforts of local coastguard volunteers, sourced out of the communities it serves.

Demand for the Nelson Volunteer Coastguard’s help is increasing.

In the 12 months to October 31, 2018, it performed 80 rescues and vessel assists, involving 746 volunteer hours on water rescues.

That’s almost double for the same period a year earlier, when it was involved in 44 rescues and vessel assists, with 380 hours on water rescues.

The new boat should serve the organisation for the next 25-plus years, Emmett says.

It is hoped to have the new boat up and running and on the water by the end of next year.

The Salvation Army in Nelson is seeking help in its work to transform the lives of those facing yet another year of high demand.

The organisation is pleading for support to help crowds of people frontline staff see every day - more than 120,000 nationwide each year.

The Salvation Army believes part of the answer to ending poverty lies in providing more families with valuable life skills.

“It takes time and support to break the cycle of poverty,” Salvation Army’s Community Ministries, Jono Bell, says. “Every hungry person who comes through our doors for a food parcel would benefit from longer-term help - budgeting sessions, social work or counselling.”

He says, with the support of people in Nelson it provided social work including case work, advocacy, social support and Positive Life Programmes, 1210 times in 2018 “If we had the resources, we could help many more.”

The Salvation Army Nelson corps officer Captain Kenneth Walker says more than thirty families sought financial support, including budgeting advice, last year.

“We distributed more than 1350 food parcels and provided emergency accommodation to many people. We hope to be able to extend our work

to more, with the help of the Red Shield Appeal.”

Jono says the number of people lacking basic needs in New Zealand is alarming.

“It’s astounding if you think of a packed stadium filled six times over with the number of people who are asking for help with adequate housing, food and other essentials to get by in New Zealand. This is what we see on the frontline consistently every year.”

The Salvation Army is calling for public donations to help it increase its services and make a dent in New Zealand’s poverty statistics.

“Our 70 Social Service Centres can only stay open for limited hours because we don’t have enough trained staff,” says Jono.

“Unfortunately, the reality is that for many of these people we can only offer immediate support which, while important, doesn’t get to the root of the problem.”

The Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal launched on April 15 throughout New Zealand.

“The Red Shield Appeal is a chance for every New Zealander to contribute in a meaningful way, to make a real and positive difference in their community,” says Jono.

Donations can be made online at salvationarmy.org.nz/redshield or given to a Salvation Army street collector between April 29 and May 5.

PGF invests in ocean economy Locally Owned and Operated

Staff Reporter The Provincial Growth Fund (PGF) will invest almost $7 million in the Top of the South’s ocean economy.

The announcement was made on Wednesday by New Zealand First MP Mark Patterson, who also pledged to support the first economic growth strategy for all communities in the wider region.

Future development of the region’s ocean economy will be supported by a $6.4 million PGF investment in the following projects: • $6 million to help establish a National Algae Centre in Nelson (Cawthron Institute) • Up to $252,000 to investigate an upgrade to Port Tarakohe (Tasman District Council) • $95,000 to develop a regional artificial intelligence facility (Nelson Artificial Intelligence Institute) • $99,000 towards a business case for the Marlborough Sounds Smart Services

Deployment project (Marlborough District Council) “The largest of the investments in the region’s ocean economy will go to the Cawthron Institute, a world-leader in research into the potential applications of algae,” Mark says.

He says the PGF will also make it easier for the industry to do business through investments in science and technology. A regional artificial intelligence facility will receive $95,000 and $99,000 will support the delivery of more accurate, consistent and better data to the aquaculture industry.

Fisheries Minister Stuart Nash says the investment from the PGF will be a welcome shot in the arm for the primary sector in the Top of the South.

“Land-based primary industries across Te Tauihu have struggled with drought and fires, and aquaculture has suffered problems with algal bloom and warmer ocean temperatures.”

“But there is a bright future

for aquaculture, highlighted by strong forecasts of export growth for seafood in key markets, especially China, the U.S. and Europe. This investment will make a real difference,” Nash said.

He says, to address these issues, the PGF will invest $435,000 in the 2077 Te Tauihu strategy, to give the wider region a roadmap for growing and diversifying the economy for generations to come.

Nelson Mayor Rachel Reese welcomed the announcement.

“With the majority of New Zealand’s aquaculture industry located in the region and a strong research and development capability, Te Tauihu is well-placed to be a global leader in growing the ocean economy.”

Rachel says this funding represents a step change in our journey towards a sustainable ocean economy, which promotes and supports diverse industries and creates economic value from sustainable practices and activities.”

A bundle of teddy bears will soon be brightening the day of Nelson’s pediatric patients.

A box of bears donated to the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter Trust were given a makeover in preparation of a trip to their new home.

Morgan Collis-Fisher of the trust’s marketing and fundraising team says the 16 teddy bears were donated anonymously.

“We decided to decorate them and then donate them to the hospital.”

Members of the public can also have a bear donated in their honour with a contribution to the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter

Trust.

Morgan says, as the only operation in the Top of the South, the trust is the busiest rescue service in the country.

“We do over 500 rescues every year and a lot of these are children.”

She says staff were talking about the best home for the bears and they decided to gift them to the pediatric ward at Nelson Hospital.

The bears will be delivered by one of the trust’s pilots kitted out in their flight suit.

More parking - including disabled parking.

Meals cooked on site (a change that could happen right away), a facility within the kids ward for respite beds for frail children. A pharmacy on site.

Nelson’s Ian Grant was in his mid60s when mobile phones took off.

He is now 84-years-old and relishing everything today’s technology has to offer.

The keen Nelson SeniorNet member and tutor is now helping other elderly citizens navigate their way around a smartphone though a course they run at their Hastings St rooms.

The very basics, such as making and receiving phone calls, sending texts and adding contacts are all covered in the course, which will be promoted at their open day this weekend.

Ian, who has been a SeniorNet member for 15 years, says he wants to show others aged over 50 that using a phone is not as complicated as they might think.

“My phone has made my life easier.

I put my wallet in one back pocket and my phone in the other.”

Ian says most people just want to learn the very basics, but there are many other benefits.

He says things like internet banking, using Google Maps and connecting with friends and families over apps like WhatsApp are all things they can teach.

“It can be good for keeping the brain active and the opportunities for social contact are great.

“Many people come here, and they don’t know what’s available. We try to publicise the possibilities,” he says.

Ian says he no longer needs a landline and can easily keep in touch with his daughter, who lives in Cuba.

“The beauty is, you can be accessed anywhere. It doesn’t matter where in the world you are. You’re not confined to the surrounding walls there’s a big wide world out there.”

Ian says although it can be daunting, he encourages others to come along and give it go.

“There are those who don’t want to know and its ‘too complicated’ and those who want to know everything, and those in-between.

“We have members walking away chuffed with what they’ve learned and can’t wait to tell their families.”

Classes are kept small, with plenty of tutors on hand to help. They also run courses for iPhones and iPads.

If you are over 50 and would like to learn more about computers and other technology you can head along to the SeniorNet open day this Saturday, 27 April from 10am to 2pm, at 11 Hastings St by Pioneer Park.

Flight of fancy at Omaka Staff Reporter

The Yealands Classic Fighters event at Omaka welcomed the biggest crowds in its 18-year history.

The Omaka-based Yak 3 “Full Noise”, owned and piloted by

Graeme Frew, was just one of many eye-catching planes at the show this weekend.

And it made a big impact on one father and son duo who flew 30 hours from Seattle in the USA for a 30-minute fight on the classic plane.

Gordon and Don Blaze had seen Full Noise race at Reno, Nevada and were determined to fly in her.

A spokesman says they loved their time at the show.

“They said it was one of the best in the world,” he says.

Though renowned as a mainly

classic aircraft event, some more modern machines also wowed the crowds, including the RAAF’s F18 Hornets, which proved to be a highlight.

People not at the show gathered on the Wither Hills hoping for a glimpse of the action and were

not disappointed.

The Amaro family from Nelson even made the trip over the hill for the event.

Although rain put an end to the fun early on Sunday, the show is being hailed by organisers and visitors as one of the best ever.

Anzac Day screenings: A restored version of the original 1955 ‘Dam Busters’ movie will play at State Cinemas to celebrate the 75th anniversary of WWII raid. ‘They Shall Not Grow Old’, recut to commemorate Anzac Day with never before seen footage from WWI, will also play, showcasing a 30-minute Peter Jackson featurette at the end of the feature.

Saul Gibney’s commute has been longer than most.

For the past seven months the Nelsonian has been heading over to Blenheim to rehearse for

his role in Marlborough Musical Theatre’s production of Phantom of the Opera.

The musical tells the story of a masked figure who lurks beneath the catacombs of the Paris Opera House, exercising a reign of terror over all who inhabit it. He falls madly in love with an innocent young soprano, Christine, and devotes himself to creating a new star by nurturing her extraordinary talents and by employing all of the devious methods at his command.

Saul is set to play Raoul, Christine’s lover.

“The role has been great,” says Saul.

“It’s one of those bucket list roles that I’ve always wanted to do.”

However, he almost didn’t get the chance as he was unable to attend the original auditions.

“But after the auditions they were struggling to cast this particular role so Nelson Youth Theatre mentioned me to the Blenheim producers. I drove over on a random Tuesday and auditioned.”

He became the only Nelsonian in the cast, having to head over the hill up to four times a week for several months.

“It’s been pretty intense, but the cast has been really welcoming and I

haven’t felt like an outsider at all.”

Luckily the past week or so has been a bit easier, with him using a specially sign-written car promoting the show.

Saul says the budget for the production is $150,000 and is using the professional consortium set as well as sound engineers from Christchurch.

“It’s such a high standard of musical theatre.”

He will play alongside classicallytrained Canadian performer Aria Bakker, who landed the role of Christine.

“Phantom requires a big stage and the ASB Theatre is perfect for it,” he says.

Saul, who will spend two weeks in Blenheim during the performance, also hopes that Nelsonians will come over for the experience.

He already knows several people making the trip.

“It will be well worth it.”

Dance connection ahead of world-class show Kate Russell Reporter

Well-known local dance teacher Peta Spooner will be watching with pride when her former student, and now the leader of one of the country’s most prestigious contemporary dance companies, takes to the Theatre Royal stage next month.

Shona McCullagh, artistic director of the New Zealand Dance Company, was taught by Peta as a teenager and the two have remained connected ever since.

The NZDC is in town on May 9 as part of the ‘Kiss the Sky’ national tour - a triple bill described as a constellation of original dance, live music and design from Aotearoa, Korea and Australia.

In the show, Shona has combined the physicality of Korean choreographer and composer KIM Jae Duk in his work Sigan, the vibrant aesthetic of New Zealand’s Victoria Colombus in her world premiere work The

Fibonacci, along with the powerhouse choreography of Australian choreographer Stephanie Lake in If Never Was Now. Shona says she has fond memories of Peta being her dance teacher back in the early 1980s at the Deirdre Tarrant Dance School in Wellington.

“She was a really positive part of my childhood, I’m very grateful to her.”

Peta says she remembers Shona “standing out in class” and knew she would go on to big things.

“She was capable, confident and had a certain air about her. She was quite a force, and I have followed her all this time.”

Shona, who has also coordinated the summer schools the NZDC have run in Nelson over the last two summers for emerging talent, says she is excited to bring ‘Kiss the Sky’ to the Top of the South.

“We’ve had rave reviews and packed houses everywhere we’ve been, and we’re really looking forward to coming to Nelson.

In 150 years of its history, Nelson RFC has never had a player on the books as big as Inoke Latu.

At a whopping 145kg, the man mountain has been making his sizeable presence felt in the Tasman Trophy this season and haunting the nightmares of opposition defences.

In fact, whether he is starting or

on the bench, Inoke wears the number 23 jersey as it better fits his substantial frame.

To put his size in perspective, Tongan prop Ben Tameifuna is touted as the heaviest in test rugby at 153kg.

The 26-year-old spent last season playing for his home club Papatoetoe in Auckland but was lured back down south with the goal of cracking the Mako squad.

He previously played for Nelson from 2015-17, making the wider

Mako squad before returning to Auckland.

Inoke sat on the bench for the Mako against Taranaki in 2015 but didn’t see any game time.

The experience has made him hungry for more ITM Cup action.

Though his size and power are obvious attributes, Inoke isn’t just a wrecking ball.

“That’s what they expect from me, so I try to use a bit of footwork.”

selectors have asked him to work on his fitness.

“It can be tough for me, but I just have to be wary about what I put in my body and get that oxygen in my legs.”

Nicknamed ‘Biggie,’ Inoke earned the appropriate moniker to help teammates avoid confusion with his brother, also named Inoke.

“When I first came down here it was with my little brother and we have the same name, so they

called me ‘biggie’ and him ‘little’. ” Off the footy field, Inoke works at Alliance Meatworks and religion is a big part of his life.

“I just want to make the most of the talent God has blessed me with.”

The softly-spoken prop wants to ultimately support his family back in Auckland through his rugby.

“My family has seen some struggles so helping them get a better life is a big driver for me.”

Marist kept its unbeaten streak alive in the E’stel Tasman Trophy after defeating the defending champions 38-17 at Tahuna Fields on Friday afternoon.

A three-try blitz just after halftime took the game away from Nelson with Marist going to the top of the table. The team now has six wins from six - four points clear of the also unbeaten Waimea Old Boys.

Nelson’s scrum was under pressure early on and an infringement from their own put-in allowed Taine Robinson to open the scoring.

A second penalty moments later put Marist 6-0 ahead, but Nelson responded with a slick backline move as Asher Wells crossed for the opening try.

Lock Connor Rhind continued his hot form after scoring a hat-trick last week, stripping the ball inside Marist’s 22 before feeding Saul Lewis who strolled over for Nelson’s second.

Marist would remain in touch thanks to Robinson’s boot, his third penalty put Marist just three behind at half-time.

The hosts would strike first after the resumption of play as Te Puhoe Stephens, fresh off a stint with the All Black Sevens side, powered his way over the line after a superb offload from winger Jamie Spowart.

The try clicked the green machine into gear and a second soon followed when Cleve Barrell snuck over from

the base of a ruck as Marist stretched its lead to 11.

Nelson began to fall off first-up tackles and Marist punished the defending champions. Sam Moli then crashed over the line as the hosts hit 30 points.

Nick Foxley picked up a late consolation try for Nelson, before another try from a quick tap by Taina Fox-Matamua sealed the win and a bonus point for Marist.

Skipper James Hawkey says, after a quiet first forty minutes, his troops stood up in the second half.

“We just lifted the intensity; the boys were a bit quiet in that first half so we needed to step up and did.”

James says the side’s strong start to the season is a credit to its culture.

“We are a young side, but the culture is strong, we are all willing to play for each other.”

The addition of two new sides will give the premier competition some added spice when it gets underway next Thursday night.

Motueka High School and a second Stoke side will enter the fray in 2019 bringing the number of top flight sides to eight.

Joining the newcomers will be defending champions Prices Ahurei, Jacks OPD, Stoke NBS, Nelson College for Girls Senior A and Waimea College Senior A. Stoke Sportswise earned its promotion after winning the Senior One competition in 2018 and Motueka High School A through the challenge series.

Wilkie wins Loop the Lake on study break Jonty Dine Reporter

He doesn’t win many races, but Nelson’s Callum Wilkie managed to cross the line first at last weekend’s Loop the Lake during a mid-semester break from university.

The 20-year-old blitzed the field of 363 runners at Lake Rotoiti finishing in 1 hour 44 minutes

and 57 seconds.

Callum says he had a simple strategy for the 25km course.

“The plan was to just go hard as could from start.”

It would prove to pay dividends but Callum says the final 7km proved the toughest task.

“The terrain was a bit rougher and I struggled to maintain momentum a bit.”

The young runner says he was covering up to 100km per week

in preparation for Loop the Lake.

It acted as the perfect warm up to the Christchurch Marathon on May 13.

“I have been building towards the Christchurch race next month, I don’t win a lot of races, so it was a great trial run for that.”

The former Nelson College student is studying at Canterbury University where he is carving out an impressive running resume, coming third in

February’s Shotover Moonlight Marathon in Queenstown in 4:49:08.

Though he isn’t sure exactly what his running future holds, Callum hopes to return to the region in 2020 and defend his title.

“We’ll see what happens.”

Wellington’s Theo Wordsworth finished the race with Nelson’s Ethan Helliwell nudging out Aucklander Janes Kuegler for third.

The top woman was Julia Anderson from Australia who pipped Wakefield’s Jodi Dobson.

Jodi was only four seconds shy of victory back in 2014 and despite running six minutes quicker five years later, she still had to settle for second as Anderson held on by 37 seconds.

Klaartje van Schie crossed third.

Next year will be the event’s 25th anniversary.

Nelson hosted Downlands College from Toowomba and shut the visitors out in the first forty as they led 45-0 at half time. Nelson will open its UC Championship account on May 4 against St Andrews College in Christchurch.

Giants suffer first loss The Mike Pero Nelson Giants have suffered its first loss of the season, going down 10091 to the Southland Sharks at the Trafalgar Centre on Thursday night.

After a blistering start, Nelson lost its radar and conceded a substantial 17-point lead to the visitors.

Jordair Jett signalled his intentions after a sloppy debut, sinking the home side’s first three, while Rhys Vague picked up where he left off last week, looking busy at both ends of the court.

Sam Pledger eventually registered the first basket for Southland, but Nelson had stormed out to a 12-4 lead.

Tyrell Harrison also got himself on the score-sheet, with the youngster showing plenty of aggression in his limited minutes.

His two free throws put Nelson in a commanding position at 22-6.

However, the Sharks began to find its rhythm and reduced the margin to 27-22 at the end of a turbulent first quarter.

The passes stopped going to hand for the Giants and Southland took full advantage, etching out a lead it wouldn’t relent for the final three quarters.

The defending champs proved why they will again be a force in 2019, taking the next three periods 27-20, 2525 and 26-19.

Nelson Suburbs has dropped to second place on the Mainland Premier League table after a 2-0 loss to defending champions Cashmere Tech at Saxton Field on Friday.

But it won’t be the goals that the game will be remembered for, but a bizarre handball from Suburbs’ defender Mark Johnston.

Suburbs’ Jordon Yong was penalised in the first minute of play near the half way mark. Then the ensuing free kick was caught by Johnston as it sailed above his head. It seems he had heard a second blow of the whistle indicating a stop in play, but the referee simply pointed to the spot where Johnston had caught the ball and awarded another free kick, this time on the edge of the box.

That free kick from Cashmere’s Luke Tongue was fired into the top corner to give the visitors a lead in just the second minute of the game.

Suburbs fought its way back into the game and created several tough chances, but when Cashmere doubled its lead from a swinging corner kick after the half hour mark it became a tough ask for the hosts to pull the game back.

Suburbs had the better of the second half with most of the attack coming from left-winger Jordon Yong, whose fancy footwork often allowed the home team to get behind the Cashmere defence.

But clean chances were few and far between as Cashmere showed its class to close the game out and head back to Christchurch on top of the table.

Suburbs next home game is on Anzac Day at Saxton Field against Coastal Spirit.

‘Father of Tasman Rugby’ to preside over NZ Rugby Jonty Dine Reporter

The man responsible for the birth of the Tasman Mako has been appointed to the highest office in the New Zealand game.

Max Spence will succeed Bill Osborne as vice-president of NZ Rugby for the next two years, then assume the mantle of president in 2020.

Tasman Rugby Union CEO Tony Lewis says Tasman has seen players and coaches go

on to the highest honours in the game, and it’s fantastic to now have an administrator at the top level too.

Tony says, while Max does not have the illustrious playing or coaching career of previous office holders, he is a provincial rugby man through and through.

“He understands the issues; he has lived and breathed them.”

Tony describes Max as the “Father of Tasman Rugby,” as it was in 2005 that Max had the idea to amalgamate the

Nelson and Marlborough Rugby Unions into one.

Tony says the proposal was steeped in political issues, but Max navigated these with class and compassion.

“He established a seven-man steering committee and the bold move was successful at a special NZR meeting in late 2005.”

A little over a decade later and the Tasman Mako are provincial rugby powerhouses, regularly featuring in the Mitre 10 Cup playoffs.

He has also enjoyed stellar success in the business sector with Shell, PGG Wrightson’s/Fruitfed Supplies.

Tony says Max will represent the great game of rugby with class, dignity and a will to listen.

“Internationally, Max will be great ambassador for the game and the brand that is New Zealand Rugby.”

“Max is a great listener, politically smart and stands up for what is right. He is prepared to take a stand and make unpopular decisions.”

Max’s rugby resume dates back more than forty years.

After studying at and playing for Lincoln University in 1975, Max managed the senior Nelson side from 198083, was chairman of the TRU from 2006-08 and served as director of the Crusaders board from 1999-2010 and was chairman of Nelson Bays Rugby from 1996-2005.
