City poised to dance

Jonty Dine The world’s largest silent disco comes to town this weekend as hundreds are set to get their groove on through the streets of Nelson.

World Dance Day will take place in over 40 countries and 96 cities around the world in a celebration to unite humanity.

Dance party co-host Bex Deva says dance serves as a universal unifier.

“It’s more important now than ever to that we remember our similarities rather than our differences.”

She says dance is the perfect medium to bring people of all backgrounds together.

“It gives a sense of joy and connection.”

The silent, roving dance party will commence at the bottom of Trafalgar St at midday on Saturday before boogying its way to the Nelson Market, the Nelson i-Site and finishing back where it began.

Dancers will use an app to sync the

music with those around the world.

Those that registered early enough were able to have their say in the playlist.

Bex says the songs are multigenerational varying from classics to contemporary such as ‘Footloose’, and ‘Ice-Ice Baby’.

She says you do not have to possess the dance ability of Justin Timberlake or Lady Gaga to get up and groove.

“We have loved having our store in the hub of stoke and getting to know our regular customers.”

The McCauley family are longtime residents in the area and Colleen McCauley says she was “shocked” to hear the store was closing on Saturday.

“I nearly fell over when they told me they were closing, it’s really sad and it was just such a shock really.

“They told me I could come out to the Richmond store, but the shops are just so handy for me here, it’s not so easy for me to get out there.”

In 2014, the Nelson City Council ran a ‘Spotlight on Stoke’ initiative which identified key points from community feedback, one of which was that it needed an environment that encouraged a wider range of shops and more exciting retailers.

However, five years on the main street has seen the loss of key tenants such as Work and Income, Westpac, BNZ and most recently Kiwibank and NZ Post, which closed last year. That saw a huge backlash from the community, including a petition, which was signed by 2000 people.

Over the next 30 years Stoke is also projected to home threequarters of Nelson’s population

and half its new housing.

The recently opened Greenmeadows Centre was testament to the council’s vision for the suburb.

However, another McCauley family member says retailers have never seemed to stay around long in that block of shops and they put it down to Nelson and Richmond being close by.

and Nelson so close, so you’ve got everything right there, I mean look at the mall that they built that was supposed to be a hub, that’s not a retail hub, it’s filled with lawyers and offices.

“There’s hardly any shops left, it’s a real shame.”

Kim Hall, who owns Squire’s Coffee says the closures are “concerning”.

“Considering they put all the elderly out here and all those resources, then just to take them away is really disappointing.”

She says many of her customers have been left without key services, forcing them out to Richmond.

“Stoke used to be a thriving little area … once upon a time you didn’t have to go into town.”

Kim says the Squire’s team are focused on what they do to make sure they are delivering the best service they can.

Cycling community reeling after death of loved member Charles Anderson and Sara Hollyman The shock death of a muchloved member of the Nelson cycling community has compelled the NZTA to extend a consultation period on how to make a notorious stretch of road safer.

Ann Rigg died on SH6 at the intersection with Glen Rd in Wakapuaka on Friday morning.

She was on a training ride for an event that was due to take place later this month.

The following day, in honour of their friend, about 60 Tasman Wheelers members took to the roads to ride some of Ann’s favourite routes.

The club announced the news of their “much loved” member “with a heavy heart”.

Member Vicky Shelling says that the event brought riders young and old.

“What we had in common was that [Ann] touched our lives in some way.”

She says many spoke of her strength, determination and grit.

Ann and her husband Peter had been part owners in Page and Blackmore before selling several years ago and were active and enthusiastic members of the Tasman Wheelers.

“Just knowing that she was so popular in the riding fraternity is extremely gratifying at this time.”

It was the first of two further cyclist crashes over the past few days, with one rider suffering minor injuries on the Ridgeway on Sunday and another on Waimea Rd on suffering serious injuries on Monday.

The intersection where Ann was killed has long been the cause of concern for locals with many being part of a long-term campaign be reduce the speed limit along the whole highway to 80 kilometres an hour.

Now NZTA have also agreed to extend a consultation period on the road.

up about the intersection and the State Highway.

“If nothing is said then it’s not an acknowledgement of the woman who lost her life on Friday. People become complacent and we let it go, but we need to speak up, enough is enough, that intersection has to change.”

She also worries about her sons getting on and off school bus as the roads “get busier and busier”.

The NZTA Safer Roads Project is looking at how to make safety improvements to State Highway 6 between Nelson and Blenheim.

Between 2008 and 2017, 19 people died and 90 were seriously injured in crashes on this stretch of road.

NZTA developed a proposal of additional safety measures such as wider shoulders and median barriers down the centre line to make the road safer.

The proposal went out for public consultation earlier this year but closed on March 31.

After Nelson Weekly spoke to NZTA on Monday, they agreed to extend the consultation period by another two weeks.

Smugglers offer staff a living wage Kate Russell Reporter

In the 15 years Paul Davenhill and Mike Thomas have owned Smugglers Pub and Cafe, they’ve always looked after their workers.

But now the Tahunanui eatery is going one step further and is paying all their staff the living wage.

Currently set at a rate of $20.55 an hour, the living wage is aimed at helping workers cover the basic expenses of life, including food, housing and transportation.

The current minimum wage is $17.70 an hour.

The living wage rate is set by the not-for-profit organisation

Living Wage Aotearoa, and is voluntary for employers.

Although they are not yet an accredited living wage employer, Mike says they wanted to make the move to help their staff “make ends meet”.

“We’ve been thinking about it for a while and the timing was right. With rising rental prices, petrol costs etc, it can be tough going for these guys.”

Paul says, out of their 20 staff many are already earning over the living wage rate, but they wanted to put everyone “over the line”.

He says they have an “open door policy” for their workers and are lucky enough to still have some of their key staff members since they started the business.

“The hospitality industry is

notoriously underpaid, but now it’s looked upon as a career and we’ve got to do the right thing.

You’ve got to be more than just owners.”

Mike says the reactions from staff have been nothing but positive.

“We sort of kept it under wraps, so they were surprised, but very appreciative. It’s hard to find good staff and we want to retain them.”

Paul says, while hospitality is “not an easy industry to make money in”, valuing staff is one of the keys to creating a successful business.

“It’s a fine balance of looking after staff and running a business, but this is an investment into our future and their future.”

Nelson’s environment gets health check Air quality has improved but our water and composting habits have deteriorated, according to the results of Nelson’s latest environmental health check.

Last week, Nelson City Council released its first State of the Environment report in eight years.

The report summarises council’s current knowledge about Nelson’s environment across six areas.

Air quality results show an improving

trend towards the Air Quality National Environmental Standards, with only two exceedances in 2018 compared to eight in 2017.

However, water quality results show that of the 25 sites monitored, only four have improved.

Seven sites have degraded, and these changes are likely to be influenced by increasing pressure from surrounding land use - 14 have retained the same grading as in 2010.

NEWS Dog registration fees set to rise: Nelson City Council will be increasing dog registration fees by 1.8 per cent from July 1 this year. The planning and regulatory committee voted on the matter at a meeting last Thursday. Urban dog registrations will be going up to $86 from $84.50, and rural dog registrations will be rising from $47.20 to $48. While there is no change to fees for hearing and seeing-eye dogs, impounding fees will also be going up from $68 to $75 for the first impounding. Council says the increases are to cover a shortfall in the funding for the dog control programme.

Average asking prices in Nelson decrease: The average asking price for houses in Nelson has fallen, according to the latest property report from realestate.co.nz. The average asking price in the Nelson and Bays region in March fell to $633,520 (- 0.2 per cent) while the number of new listings decreased by 18.1 per cent (80). The average asking price in Auckland also fell, which has been counter-balanced by increases in other regions including record highs in the Wellington, Manawatu-Wanganui, Marlborough, Central North Island and Southland regions for the first time since records began in 2007.

Fire at Elma Turner Library: Nelson’s Elma Turner Library was closed on Sunday after a fire broke out in the building. A Nelson City Council spokesperson said the small electrical fire meant the library had to remain closed all day so an electrician could undertake a thorough check. Fire and Emergency NZ shift supervisor Mau Barbara confirmed the Nelson station responded two appliances at 9.45am after an alarm was activated.

Supermarket for Tahuna?

When residents of Tahunanui need to go to the supermarket, they are left with two options.

They can go to Stoke, or they can make the trip into Nelson.

If they don’t have a car or bike, they can always use an online grocery delivery service at an extra cost - or they could pay a bit more for a loaf of bread from one of the suburbs many convenience stores.

But should they have to?

A resident’s survey carried out by the Tahunanui Community Centre three years ago revealed that a supermarket was on the top of the list of things people wanted for the suburb.

That want, and need, has not changed.

Paul Ladbrook, manager of the Tahuna Beach Holiday Park, says recent discussions with staff and campers have led him to believe a supermarket would be a real asset to the suburb.

“Their reply is always ‘hell yes’.”

Association, remembers when there was a store on Tahunanui Dr in the 1960s.

“Jones’ Food Market, it was called. My mother used to like it.”

But he says people have wanted a reasonable-sized supermarket in Tahunanui for a long time.

“Apart from dairies and the fruit and vegetable stall, there isn’t really anything else. Even something the size of Raewood Fresh [in Richmond] would be good.

“When you think about the catchment area - there is the Port Hills, suburban Tahunanui, Moana, the campground. There is a lot of support for one.”

But who would build it and where would it go?

A supermarket has been mooted for years as part of the Ocean View apartment development on Beach Rd, and there is a high change it could come to fruition, according to developer Tony Vining.

The development consists of 37 luxury apartments overlooking the Tahunanui Recreation Reserve, 24 which have already sold.

“We are very close to final sign off for the apartments and are currently looking at commercial development options for the site. We would be open to consider a supermarket as part of this,”

he says.

“There still seems to be very strong public support for one in the Tahunanui area.”

Jacques Reynolds, business development and operations manager at Bayleys Nelson, says physical works on the development could start this month and it’s “highly likely” a supermarket could be part of the overall project.

“We’re in early talks. Everyone we’ve spoken to has asked us if there are plans for one - but what form or size, we’re not sure at this stage.”

Plans are also still bubbling away at the old Suburban Club site on Tahunanui Dr. Gibbons Holdings purchased the site in 2016, with the company confirming a year later that they would be developing the complex into a retail hub. A convenience store was one of the options.

However, the project has stalled with Gibbon unable to confirm a timeframe.

So, while Tahunanui residents have takeaway options and convenience stores aplenty, it still remains wedged between the two supermarket meccas of the city - Nelson and Stoke, without one to call their own.

Global media company moves headquarters into Nelson Andrew Board Reporter

The building which was once occupied by the region’s largest newsroom is now home to a new kind of media company – one that many Nelsonians would have never heard of but one that is on track to be a billion-dollar enterprise.

Shuttlerock moved its global head office to the top-storey of the former Nelson Mail building on Bridge St last week. The building is now owned by Gibbons, which also did the fit out for Shuttlerock.

Its founder and CEO Jonny Hendrickson says being based in regional New Zealand and doing business around the world has been a “dream” of his.

“We’ve always said that, as a tech company, we can operate anywhere and what better place to live in New Zealand than Nelson.”

Jonny Hendrickson founded Shuttlerock in 2011 and it shot to prominence in 2016 when his company won the Global

Innovation Spotlight Awards, a worldwide tech competition.

That win courted the attention of Facebook, which has since made Shuttlerock a Facebook Marketing Partner and an Instagram Partner. There are only a handful of companies at that level around the world.

Jonny says Shuttlerock creates data-driven mobile-optimized ads for Facebook and Instagram at scale. Only three per cent of its income comes from New Zealand, with Asian, European and Americans companies its biggest clients.

“We’ve just started this journey, we’re out to grow a billion-dollar business so we’re just getting started. Our goal is to be the largest creative platform across all media proprieties, so we have a lot of work to do.”

Shuttlerock was operating out of the Network Tasman building in Richmond until last week. It also has offices in New York, Berlin, Paris, Los Angeles, Singapore, Tokyo and Austin, Texas.

One of those is Cam Burns. He has worked for Shuttlerock for three years, originally from its Auckland office, but after a work trip to Nelson decided he wanted to make the move south.

“When I first started, I remember

going down to Kina where Jonny lives and I thought ‘gee, this isn’t too bad’. I remember tapping Jonny on the shoulder one night and I said, ‘you know I could probably live here’. Once my wife and I had a baby we thought ‘let’s go and do it’.”

He’s been living in Mapua for almost a year and says it’s the “perfect” environment to raise a young family.

“And along with work doing so well, it’s great.”

Jonny says while it’s nice to be based in central Nelson he’s not too focussed on his surrounds at the moment.

“In this space you can be yesterday’s news very quickly, I’m very aware of that, a lot can still go wrong. So, you have to remain humble and focused and don’t stop innovating.”

Nominations open for civic awards Staff reporter

Nominations are now open for this year’s Eelco Boswijk Civic Awards.

Do you know someone helping to make Nelson the special place that it is? It could be a neighbour who quietly organises community events, or someone who is leading the way in the realm of climate change or protecting our natural environment.

There are five awards which a Nelson City Council spokesperson says are aimed at recognising individuals and groups who are helping achieve their goals as a community, in line with the vision that Nelson is a Smart Little City.

Mayor Rachel Reese says the awards are about recognising our “greatest heros and helpers” and were inspired by Nelsonian Eelco Boswijk who made a “huge contribution to our city in a great many ways.

“Council is proud to honour his legacy through these awards,” says Rachel.

“This year’s awards are a way to recognise and thank those people

Rachel Reese. who are making a difference here and now in Nelson.”

The five award Categories are: 1. Community Hero Encouraging those who both lead and take part in community activities to make Nelson an even better place. Community Heroes may be involved in business, voluntary work, community and environmental groups, education, sporting clubs or working with the disadvantaged.

2. Change maker Recognising an individual who is taking an innovative approach to effecting change.

3. Leadership Recognising an individual in the business or education fields who has gone above and

beyond to show leadership, provide opportunities for others and give back to the community, while educating and encouraging others to do the same.

4. Kaitiakitanga Raising awareness of those who are caring for our natural environment through volunteer efforts. This could be through nurturing biodiversity, protecting flora or fauna, improving our freshwater, reducing carbon emissions or any initiative that enhances our wonderful natural environment.

5. Smart Little City Recognising those smart thinkers who create new possibilities through the clever use of resources, technology or collaboration to get us closer to being a Smart Little City: he tāone tōrire a Whakatū.

Nominations for the Civic Awards are open until Sunday, 28 April 2019.

Competitors keep it fun for City2Saxton Staff reporter The morning might have sported the first signs of winter but that did not stop hundreds of keen runners, scooters, skaters and walkers from turning out for the annual City2Saxton.

Sunday’s event, which began at Victory Community Centre, saw competitors dressed in all manner of outfits making their way to Saxton Fields in Richmond.

Sport Tasman says that the event was a great success with everyone enjoying themselves at different levels of competitiveness.

This year, the event was raising money for the youth mentoring service Big Brothers Big Sisters, which pairs people from different age groups to ensure they thrive.

Competitors were met at Saxton Fields by a “finish village”, which featured everything from a bouncy castle, “to barbecues, coffee carts and spot prizes.”

Summit Richmond branch manager Gordon Webb says it is a big investment by the company but one well and truly worth embarking on.

“We have already got really good feedback from people that they are enjoying having it right there, which is great.”

Marketing manager Emma Barton says no other property magazine can say they get out to everyone in the region.

“Reaching more people means more exposure and more exposure can only be a good thing.”

Weekly publisher Andrew Board says property listings are a proven winner for newspapers, with it often ranking as one of the most popular advertising sections.

“We’ve been working on bringing more property listings to our readers for some time and we’re delighted with this new relationship with Summit, the region’s largest real estate company.”

Nelson Firefighters are encouraging residents to prepare for winter with a list of things to do to make sure your home is safe.

The Tasman-Marlborough Fire Area shared some tips for fire safety on their Facebook page with the spokesperson saying “winter brings a unique set of fire dangers” that we should all be aware of.

Follow these fire safety tips to help keep yourself and your family safe, no matter the season.

Fireplaces and chimneys Clean chimneys and flues before you light the first fire of the season.

Always use a fireguard or spark-guard when using an open fire.

Never throw rubbish into the fireplace – particularly batteries and aerosol cans.

Always empty ashes and ashtrays into a metal bin and pour water over them before disposal.

Remember that ashes can take up to 5 days to cool.

Keep matches, lighters and anything else that can create fire out of reach of children.

Electric blankets Replace your electric blanket every 5 years with newer heat-protected models, which are safer.

Worn and old electric blankets can cause an electric shock, fire and possibly even death.

At the first sign of wear have your electric blanket checked by a qualified electrician.

Don’t place heavy objects on the bed while the blanket is on.

Make sure the blanket is always flat on the bed and that controls or cords are not twisted or caught between the mattress and the base of the bed. Twisted cords are a common cause of electric blanket fires.

Roll your blanket when you store it for the summer, don’t fold it.

Rethink on recycling proposed: It is something that we all have to face up to, we are all responsible for all of this rubbish that we create. I am shocked to learn how much money is spent on recycling storage as noone has use for it anymore.

Surely, we have some clever people out there who could dream up some ways of using plastic etc.

Nelson Matters This week I voted on Nelson’s behalf for tighter gun laws. It has triggered the wrath from some gun enthusiasts. I have no regrets. It is the right response to the atrocity in Christchurch that saw the loss of so many innocent lives.

Some critics have argued it is National’s job to oppose, but I disagree. Our job is to challenge where we honestly believe the Government is doing the country harm. It is good that parliament has united in response to this grotesque attack.

I do not claim that these new gun laws will prevent all mass killings. Terrorists can com-

mit their atrocities by hijacking planes, making bombs out of chemicals or driving vehicles into crowds. The problem with semi-automatic weapons is that they are specifically designed to kill. This murderer committed this atrocity here rather than in Australia in part because our gun laws were more lax.

The vast bulk of the 5,000 firearm owners in Nelson and Tasman are responsible, law-abiding citizens who quite legitimately use their guns for recreation, sport and pest control. I do not believe sports people need the sort of military style AR15 weapons used in the Christchurch attacks

to enjoy their hunting. The new law does provide exemptions for those who really need semi-automatics such as for pest control.

Critics claim we should just focus on filtering out those who misuse firearms. The last major parliamentary debate on gun laws was after the Aramoana tragedy that killed 14 people in 1990. A local constituent and farmer berated me over the proposed changes then, saying they just penalized law-abiding gun owners like him who did no harm. Three years later he lost the plot, fatally shooting his wife, farm worker and himself.

Nelson publisher expands to Marlborough Nelson Weekly has a new sister paper.

Last week the first edition of Marlborough Weekly was published to 19,000 homes and businesses.

It is owned by Marlborough Media, a joint venture between the publishers of Nelson Weekly and Summa MacDonald, a Marlborough-based publisher.

It is based on the same successful formula as Nelson Weekly, including popular sections like Street Talk, Out & About, Opinion and sport pages.

Managing director of both companies, Andrew Board, says it’s a big step forward.

“Nelson Weekly Ltd has undergone huge change in the past couple of years. We’ve launched new products like the Nelson App and Nelson Magazine and now have a majority shareholding in Marlborough Media which publishes Marlborough Weekly, Marlborough App and Marlborough Magazine.

These additional products are driving our growth, along with continued increased sales in the Nelson Weekly itself.”

He says the Marlborough company employs seven local staff and launched with more than 70 businesses advertising.

Chandler’s ‘The Dividing Line’ exhibition bears powerful messages for today’s New Zealand – a situation which has tragically come about since the exhibition opened.

After a resurgent 2018 season, which saw the Giants knocked out of the NBL semi-final, the franchise is looking to replicate that form as they chase the title which has eluded them since 2007.

This task is made tougher as the side will be without its biggest star for the majority of the 2019 season.

Finn Delany has utilised his Europe “out clause” and is joining Serbian FMP Belgrade, making him unavailable for the majority of the Giant's NZNBL campaign.

The 23-year-old was an integral part of the Giant’s 2018 run, averaging just under 20 points a game.

However, new head coach Mike Fitchett had been planning for this contingency and has built a solid squad.

This included securing the signature of Tall Black Mika Vukona for the 2019 NBL season.

Mika will play his 19th NZNBL campaign after playing his first game for the franchise as a 17-year-old at the turn of the century and returning to the Hangar in 2018.

The 36-year-old Fijian-born Nelsonian brings a wealth of experience to the region with more than a decade of international basketball under his belt.

Though he may not be lighting up the stats sheets, Vukona brings immeasurable lead-

ership and nous to the court.

Giants chairman Jeremy Banks says he is excited to have Mika back home again for 2019.

Also on the books is Australian boomer Daniel Grida.

It’s all systems go for this Saturday’s Forest Fire Concert.

It promises to be a great afternoon of entertainment at the A & P Showgrounds in Richmond, beginning at 1pm and going through until about 6pm.

Headline act The Warratahs will be supported by the Nelson Jazz Club Big Band, local duos Dust and Gold, and BoKay, and covers band Nine95.

Responders and volunteers get in free to the concert with their immediate family, which includes children and partners only.

The family-friendly event also includes a children’s area.

There is a small general public charge of $10 for adults and $5 for kids under 15. In the interests of keeping things simple it’s a gate charge and cash only. Families are welcome to bring a chilly bin and seats.

Organisers have asked everyone involved to spread the word and make sure as many people as possible turn up. There is free parking available at the town end of the showgrounds entrance.

It’s also hoped one of the helicopters involved in fighting the fire will be on display at the showgrounds during the afternoon.

Local businesses have got behind a silent auction that is

being held as part of the concert, with some fantastic items to bid on, with proceeds raised going to the Mayoral Disaster Relief Fund that has been set up to raise money for those affected by the Pigeon Valley fire.

Some of the items donated so far include Richmond Mall vouchers worth $2500, a week’s campervan use provided

by Discover New Zealand Motorhome Rentals from Hope, and a 7 by 4 caged trailer provided by Tasman Trailers.

While they are here The Warratahs will travel to the fire site and Wakefield to get a better idea of what happened while the area was under a State of Emergency.

Period drama scandal sure to sell out Staff reporter

The year is 1915 and the residents of a respected local residence are up to no good.

Starting this Friday, the performers of the People’s Republic of Improv will be putting on their latest serialised, entirely improvised, incarnation.

They have already put their spin on 1980s soap operas and 1940s romantic epics, and now they are turning their attention to 20th century period drama.

Every Friday in April, Ghost Light Theatre on Bridge St will be home to “Downton Uppity” – an improvised saga inspired by the hit historical dramas Downton Abbey and Upstairs, Downstairs.

“The actors will bring you suppressed British emotion, over-reactive letter reading and scandalous crossover between aristocrats and their household staff,” says Ghost Light

Theatre’s Laura Irish.

Each actor will play two characters, the upstairs toff and the downstairs servant, no doubt leading to some wildly scandalous rendezvous.

Laura says the serialised show format seems to have been a hit with Nelsonians with many making it required viewing.

“Both our previous shows sold out, with some coming to every episode to make sure they didn’t miss out on crucial plot points.”

She says, even though the whole thing is made up on the spot, improvisers will ensure the whole season makes sense. However, people can still come along to individual episodes and have a great time.

Viewers can buy a season pass for all four Fridays for $35 or individual tickets starting from $13. Downton Uppity starts this Friday at 8pm at Ghost Light Theatre at 146 Bridge St. Tickets at ghostlight.nz

The Theatre Royal will be taken back to roaring twenties this Easter, as a new adaption of the classic musical ‘Chicago’ comes to town.

The Nelson Youth Theatre Company are performing the full-length High School Edition of the musical, which is also a New Zealand premiere.

It opens at 7pm on Easter Friday, 19th, and runs for eight performances (excluding

In a career which includes scoring against the All Blacks and coaching a Commonwealth Games gymnast, Professor Fabian Amor is embarking on his next chapter of sporting success.

The Nelson Hockey Association operations manager has been at the forefront of a Nelson Hockey resurgence as he was instrumental in acquiring new turf and a scoreboard at Saxton Fields.

The Argentinian-native has also led the creation of the new hockey Super League to help develop the region’s top players.

The league will include Nelson with other Top of the South associations, Marlborough, West Coast-Buller and Nelson.

“It is important to provide those players with regular, top-quality competition.”

Games will take place once a

month for five weeks with three matches to be held in Nelson and one each in Blenheim and Westport.

Players will integrate with their regional rivals to form six new men’s and women’s teams; the Suns, the Falcons and Mr Chips.

Fabian says they tried to combine the 90 players from various regions and positions in the teams.

“It’s really exciting. The players all know each other from rep hockey so there will be good comradery.”

Fabian has a diverse but impressive sporting resume, his career kicking off on the footy field.

He played first five for Argentinian team, Mar del Plata, opposite Wayne Smith against a touring All Blacks side in 1985.

“It was amazing to play against Wayne, Buck Shelford, Jock Hobbs, Robbie Deans, it was the best day of my life.”

Though the All Blacks would win comfortably 52-6, Fabian

was lucky enough to convert two penalties for a six-point haul against the best team in the world.

He says he has kept in touch with the former All Blacks, attending a number of workshops hosted

by Smith.

Fabian founded and directed the high-performance centre at Mar del Plata, helped coach Kiwi gymnast Jordan Rae at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi and was the liaison officer for Argentina during the inaugural All Blacks test in Nelson last year.

His dedication and unwavering passion for sport has helped him transform the Nelson hockey scene.

Fabian was again integral in the installation of two new scoreboards as well as a new turf at Saxton.

“We have been working on that for a long time, so it is great for the community to see it happen, the facility is amazing.”

Business meets leisure for charity Jonty Dine While bragging rights are crucial, supporting one of the region’s most treasured services is what drives next month’s Summit and Nelson Weekly Charity Golf Tournament.

The third annual event pits local businesspeople against each other on the course while raising funds for the Nelson Tasman Rescue Helicopter Trust (NTRH).

General manager Paula Muddle says the May 24 event is about putting the fun back in fundraiser.

“We put on a range of different activities that engage our sponsors and donors throughout our awareness month, but what better way to raise funds for an amazing cause than to get out on a beautiful Nelson day and play some golf ?”

Last year the event raised more than $15,000 for the trust and Paula says they are set to better that figure this time around.

Lump sums from each of the naming sponsors has ‘kickstarted’ the fundraising efforts with a $25,000 target being set.

Businesses from throughout the region will take part and will have the option of a serious round or just a bit of a hit and giggle.

However, there will be some quality golfers on display.

Last year’s champion Jason Perrett from AON will be back to defend his crown but will face stiff competition from the likes of resident pro Glyn Delaney from Summit.

Also among those to watch is the NTRH marketing coordinator and third generation golfer Morgan Collis-Fisher.

Morgan has a prestigious golfing pedigree, her mother and grandmother both having represented New Zealand.

The day will pit 29 teams of four in Ambrose rules with a charity auction following the day’s action.

Paula says sponsors are still being sought.

Nelson Suburbs has continued its unbeaten run in the MPL with a resounding 4-1 victory over Selwyn United at Saxton on Saturday.

Suburbs were dominant from the outset with Cameron Gordon and Jordan Yong looking lethal on attack.

Cameron would open the scoring just seven minutes in with a scintillating piece of individual brilliance.

After stealing possession, he danced his way through three defenders before guiding it into the net.

Ed Sillars continued his scoring spree this season, netting his third goal in three games with a precision header to put the hosts two ahead with just twenty minutes gone.

Nelson bounced back from consecutive losses to start the season with a hard-fought victory over Stoke at Trafalgar Park.

Despite being outscored two tries to one, it was the boot of the returning Willy Havili which proved the difference.

Stoke made a thrilling start as towering Fijian Isei Lewaqai burst through a ruck with acres of space in front of him, only to butcher the opportunity with a poor offload attempt.

It would be the first of a number of strong runs from the bulldozing blindside.

Halfback Max Nalder opened the scoring soon after with a sneaky dart down the blindside as Stoke dominated territory and possession early on.

Havili was back at the helm for Nelson after a stint with the Blues wider training squad.

The playmaker looked rusty early on, overcooking a penalty kick for touch, but soon made

amends with a long-range penalty to register Nelson’s first points.

Joey Scott, in his first year in club rugby out of Nelson College, looked dangerous with ball in hand. In midfield, Rupena and Kalani Parkinson enjoyed a fierce battle with Chris Kerslake and Nick Foxley.

Nick would dot down first for the hosts just after the break.

He was the beneficiary of a pinpoint inside kick by winger Blane Wanoa-Commons after a barnstorming break down the right flank.

Havili added the extras for a 10-5 advantage before slotting a second penalty to stretch the lead to eight.

The young fly-half had his radar well and truly on target as he soon nailed a third penalty.

Stoke struck back immediately, however, through replacement Chad Lowrie who converted his own try to bring his side back within four.

Havili restored the difference to seven soon after before sealing the win with a drop goal.

“It was a bit scrappy at times, but the boys dug deep,” he says.

At least this makes dawn fishing sessions much easier on the sleep patterns. This brings on the next season and opportunities fishing wise. Reports around the bay are that Snapper are still about and those finding them are not disappointed in their size of catches or indeed their volume. Others are being skunked, one thing is for sure, you need to be out there to be in with a chance.

There are plenty of options around the area, members of the Dawnbreakers have just got this months hot spot, and this is much closer than you would expect, only one nautical mile from shore - an easy paddle for a kayak fisho and easy enough for

boaties as well.

As the water cools we would expect to see the snapper sticking around for the next month, as well as the trusty (and delicious) gurnard making an appearance.

You may have to battle through the small snapper to get a gurnard, but it’s worth it as you may get a larger model snapper for your patience.

One often overlooked fishery in the area is fresh water, not that it would appear we had a lot of fresh water this summer, but I did get my young fella out to the fish out ponds in Appleby. These ponds offer a great opportunity for our kids. They will learn of valuable fishing skills they can use for any type of fishing. As a bonus, the fish are in great condition and taste great.

Nelson drivers filled the podium on Saturday night as the penultimate meeting of the Hydraulink sprint car Series wound up at the Milestone Top of the South Speedway.

Connor Rangi was a man on a mission as he went flag to flag to cut the Hydralink series lead held

by Jamie Duff to just 26 points as they head into the final round in Cromwell over Easter.

Nelson’s last round feature winner, Sam O’Callaghan, came in second with Greg Teece borrowing the other Freeman machine to finish third.

Alicia McLauchlan ended her series with a seventh placing in the feature, but wedding bells will be sounding when the next round happens as she ties the knot with Super Stock driver Alex Hill.

SportS Football: Senior football kicked off today with hard fought wins for FC Nelson, Tahuna and College. Last year’s champions the Rangers have returned to the Marlborough competition meaning a new champion will be crowned this season. FC Nelson has made an early statement with a comfortable 2-0 win over new comers Wakefield. Tahuna also opened its account with a win, defeating Suburbs at Saxton 1-0 while Nelson College edged Richmond by the same score line. Harriers: The first of Athletic Nelson’s 5km Turf Bar Stoke series saw 75 runners compete last Wednesday evening.

The course, featuring the Railway Reserve Walkway, was flat and fast, with the winner, Matt Ogden, finishing in a record time of 16 minutes. Dan Busch and Alan Bryson, also ran exceptionally well, to come home in 17.24 and 17.45mins, respectively. Some excellent times were also recorded by the women, with Julia Lawson first in 29.29mins and Katie Wright second in 20.57mins. Of the walkers, Don Bate was the clear winner in 31.41mins with the fastest woman, Gillian MacDougall, 34.5mins.

Running: This Saturday’s 24th edition of the ever-popular Alpine Lodge Loop is sold out. The 25km circuit around “the Little Lake” will see 150 runners from the Nelson region will line up with the rest travelling from all over the country. Early favorites include Robert Rawles or Callum Wilkie however well-seasoned Vajin Armstrong has the pedigree to perform on a consistent basis. Klaartje van Schie and Julia Anderson are a great shot to take up two of the female positions on the podium.

He only took to the track six months ago, but Keegan Hornblow is already preparing to take on the world.

The Nelson cyclist has been named in the New Zealand junior men’s cycling team to compete at the world championships in Germany in August.

The 17-year-old caught the eye of national selectors at the U19 and Elite national champs in Cambridge in February, his first competitive track meet.

Keegan finished third in both the U19 men’s individual 3000m pursuit and the 80-lap scratch race.

A road cyclist since the age of 12, Keegan was recently convinced to switch to the track by friends and coach Jason Craig.

“He has always been keen to get me on the track.”

Despite limited resources in the region, the decision paid dividends and Keegan has cycled in the best velodromes in the country.

Joining Keegan in the team is former Nelson College student, world record holder and close friend, Finn FisherBlack.

“Finn has been a big influence and a real motivator for me.”
