The future of the Tahuna Holiday Park is unclear as the society that governs the camp is revealed to have run up almost $1 million in debt, the Nelson Weekly has learned. In response, the Nelson City Council has appointed a business adviser to the Tahuna Camp Incorporated Society to ensure “the ongoing viability and sustainability of the camp” as well as ensuring it complies with its governance obligations. Nelson City Council owns the land and then leases it back to the society to run it. The lease of the 22-hectare camp is up on June 1 and at a closed doors meeting last week council decided to renew the society’s lease until next year. However, that future was still unknown when the Nelson Weekly spoke to the couple who have run the adjacent conference centre

for the last 10 years. “We have had to turn away $300,000 of work this year because we can’t guarantee to clients what will be here,” says outgoing centre manager John Bilderbeck. “The communication just hasn’t been there.” According to the financial statements of the Tahuna Camp Incorporated Society, it is more than $907,000 in debt with the Tahuna Café and shop losing $250,000 in the last two years. “It’s a real bloody shame,” says John. “It’s a bloody good asset but the council won’t spend money on it. I don’t understand it.” John and his wife Yvonne say that the situation has led them to retire from the facility, even though they have loved their time running it. When they leave at the end of next month they will take with them all the event chattels that they have built up over the years.

After losing her right leg, her hair, and countless hours of school, ten-year-old Deanna Marsden is back playing sport with a spring in her step. As a six-year-old Deanna battled a particularly aggressive form of bone cancer and, in 2015, the Tahunanui Primary student had her leg amputated. She underwent a Van-Nes rotationplasty to remove the cancerous bone and wears a prosthetic limb to ensure she can continue playing the games she loves. Deanna has spent two and a half years wearing out her prosthetic leg, which she called ‘Daisy’, and recently received a second one. “It feels like when you get a new pair of shoes, it just takes some getting used to,” she says. She is also waiting for a blade, so she can move even faster. Deanna tested the blade and says she is very excited to take it to the netball court. “It feels lighter and pretty bouncy, it will definitely help.” Deanna returned to the netball court this season for Tahunanui School, the shooter helping her side remain unbeaten. “We have won all of our games so far.” She says she is loving being back playing competitive sport. “They don’t go easy on me and I wouldn’t want them to.” A sports-mad child, Deanna also enjoys horse

The Marsden family’s nightmare began in 2015 as most families were planning their Christmas celebrations. “It was pretty scary because I didn’t know what it was at first, I had never heard of cancer until I had it,” Deanna says. After colliding with another child at school, she was unable to get back up. “She had no cancer symptoms at all, we thought she had broken her leg,” her mother, DJ, says. Deanna ended up getting an X-ray and that’s when doctors discovered the bone cancer. The doctor sat Deanna’s parents down and that’s when “our lives completely changed. “I just felt numb.” She says when they got them-

selves together, they decided the best thing was to be upfront with their daughter. “We sat her and her sisters down and explained that she has cancer in her leg and that we will have to go and get medicine that will make you sick but better which was the hardest thing to explain.” Deanna was naturally curious about what was going to happen. She asked ‘am I going to die? Is my hair going to fall out and are they going to cut my leg off?’ “We truthfully answered and said ‘not on our watch, you’re not going to die, your hair will fall out but it will grow back and yes there is a potential that you may lose your leg’.” Deanna’s parents were shocked to see the effects of chemo. “She went from a happy, giggly kid to vomiting and sleeping days on end, she was literally

fighting for her life.” Following the chemo, Deanna was faced with two options. She could have a rod inserted in her leg that would ‘look normal’ but limit her mobility and flexibility or have the leg removed. “The thing that helped us make up our minds was when the surgeon said, ‘if this was my child, this is the procedure I would do.” Deanna proved to her mother the following day that she was not going to let her condition hold her back. She decided that she wanted to haul herself into the wheelchair that was in the corner of the room and managed to do so. “She had that look on her face, this was a day after having her leg cut off and turned the other way. It was only for a couple of seconds, but those couple of seconds made her realise she could

do anything. “I can’t imagine how much pain she was in.” It took more than two years for her to get her prosthetic leg. Deanna says she was excited to learn she was going to still be able to play sport and may have gotten a bit too excited when she received it. “When I first got my fake leg, I sprained my real leg on the same day.” DJ says Deanna doesn’t see what many people would see as a disability. “It just is what it is.” Deanna adopted the school’s mantra of ‘I can and I will’ throughout her recovery. “She’s a bit of a superhero,” says DJ. Deanna says she now feels like she can take on any challenge in life.

Council’s acting group manager community services Roger Ball says the renewal of the lease ensures ‘business as usual’ for the camp and that planning can be put in place for another busy summer season. He says Tahuna Beach Camp Incorporated Society is responsible for the operation of the camp and any associated debt. However, John Bilderbeck says there is no doubt that responsibility will fall on ratepayers at some stage. “It’s just inevitable.” Three years ago the society announced plans to revitalise the 92-year-old camp as part of a 20-year vision to turn it more into a “resort style” destination.

Dance raises $90k for hospice Sara Hollyman Reporter

In front of a sold-out Trafalgar Centre, eight local personalities swapped out their regular attire for sparkles and shimmers to Dance for a Cause on Saturday night, raising more than $90,000 for Nelson Tasman Hospice. Ros Pochin, Paul Hampton, Pic Picot, Rachel Boyack, Matt Lawrey, Richard Carruthers, Rachel Reese and Matt Bouterey, all paired up with trained dancers to impress the crowd of more than 1200 people. Local GP Sally Thomas was the

brains behind the evening, coming up with the idea and then developing it, doing the ground work and bringing key people together to get it off the ground. Hospice fundraising and marketing member Joanna Davis says the night was a great community event that saw everyone out and having a good time. “We are so wrapped with how the night went. Everyone’s been so generous with their time and their donations. It was a really well supported event and we are just so thankful to everyone.” Joanna said the support came at such an important time, with the new hospice facility currently be-

ing constructed in Stoke, at a cost of $11.5 million. They still need around $1.8 million to complete the build. Winner of the competition, Nelson surgeon Ros Pochin, says that it was petrifying being out in front of the crowd, but thought she was in with a good chance at taking the top spot. “When we had to stand there for 10 minutes and talk to the judges afterwards, you just wanted to bolt off stage, I was shaking for about five minutes after. “There was a lot of comradery between the contestants, everyone was supporting each other because you know you’re all there

to support such a great cause.” She also says choreographer Emma Silke-French was the star of the night. The event raised around $40,000 on the night which will be added to the give-a-little totals that the contestants have raised. Estimates are that just over $100,000 has been raised, but not all of that will go to Hospice. Inspiring Youth Theatre Charitable Trust (IYTCT), which funds Nelson Youth Theatre, helped put the show together and assisted on the night. They will take 10 per cent of profits for their work. Secretary of the trust and Dancing for a Cause contestant, Rich-

ard Carruthers, says lots of people donated things for the night “Everyone said ‘oh, that’s for Hospice, you can have it for free’ or ‘we’ll help out’.” It was originally suggested that the night be a fundraiser for IYTCT but it was decided that they didn’t have the pulling power to get the fundraising support. “We approached Hospice and said ‘look we’ll give you 90 per cent of the proceeds and we’ll take ten’. Photo: Supplied. sculpture when high winds are funnelled along Saltwater Creek are much greater than expected, so re-hanging the sculpture in this location does not seem a sensible option.” Although its new home is yet to be decided, Roger says it will be within the city centre. “Investigations are now underway to decide a new site that will be more sheltered but still display the sculpture effectively for the community to enjoy.

“It is hoped a new location can be found in the next few weeks.” The Welcome Cloak was designed by Nelson artist Adi Tait and is made from strands of gold and anodised aluminium. It was designed to reflect the water and symbolises the historical importance of Saltwater Creek as a landing site for iwi and the boundary of where the land and sea met. The initial cost of the sculpture

was $51,000, with the 2016 repairs and reinstallation bringing the bill up to around $59,000. Council say the cost of the current repairs and reinstallation is yet to be determined. Adi told Nelson Weekly that it “made sense” to move the sculpture. “The current position is quite a wind tunnel. Somewhere more sheltered would definitely be better.”

NEWS Council to fund Brook Sanctuary: Nelson City Council has approved ongoing operational support funding for the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary Trust at its recent Long Term Plan deliberations. The council have agreed to provide $250,000 in 2018/19, followed by $150,000 per year thereafter, for ongoing operational support. The release of future funding is subject to the successful completion of a memorandum of understanding between council and the trust, and the release of each annual amount relies on the sanctuary trust reporting against objectives outlined in the MOU. Council received close to 90 submissions in favour of the funding. Sheep faeces found next to dam: Nelson City Council has assured residents that sheep faeces found along the edge of the Maitai Dam impose no threat to the city’s water supply. The faeces were found by a member of the public earlier this month by the dam, which is part of the town’s water supply. A council spokesperson says a gate had been left open, allowing sheep to enter the area and graze. They say the area has now been cleaned up and they have taken steps to prevent similar incidents from happening again. They say there is a low risk of faecal contamination in Nelson’s water supply due to all potable water passing through Nelson’s water treatment plant.

After almost two years of wind damage woes, Saltwater Creek’s Welcome Cloak sculpture is to be moved to a “more sheltered” location. The sculpture, which was paid for and commissioned by Nelson City Council, was taken down after its bottom bar was “bent” by high winds on 10 April. It’s not the first time the controversial artwork has suffered damage - just two months after it was installed in August 2016, its strands were tangled in gusts of wind and it was removed for a five-monthlong repair job. Council’s acting group manager community services, Roger Ball, says the sculpture was assessed on 18 May. “After consultation, including with the Arts Selection Panel, it has been decided to investigate a new location for the sculpture,” he says. “The forces placed upon the

We are seeing people in Auckland and down south looking to make the move to the region,” she says. “Buy a motel and you’re getting your job and somewhere to live, so it’s still appealing.” Century Park Motor Lodge owner Jackie Thomsen is selling up after two years, saying it’s a “fantastic” business to own. “The tourism industry in Nelson is huge - we’ve had lots of interest so far.” Gill says as a region, the commercial market is “very busy” and she expects that pattern to continue. “It’s winter, which is always a bit quieter but certainly there is interest. There are still buyers coming in.”

Striving to give others a second chance Charles Anderson Two people are now seeing the world through Tania Lineham’s eyes. Tania had received a liver transplant 22 years ago after suffering for years from sclerosing cholangitis – a longterm progressive disease of the liver. “She got a second chance and what she achieved in those 22 years is incredible,” says her Nelson-based mother-in-law Gloria Lineham. Tania was a passionate and inspiring teacher who in 2015 was awarded the Prime Minister’s Science Teacher Prize. But on April 11 she died after complications arising from a second donation. However, before she died she was able to donate her corneas to two people. Now her family, including her husband Craig, are continuing Tania’s cause – trying to pressure the Government to

Tania thought the country should change the law to ensure more people on transplant waiting lists received organs before they died. Currently organ donation requires people to ‘opt in’ rather than having it as the norm and needing people to opt out.

However, Gloria says that it is also important that people have the conversation with their families about what they want to happen at the end of their lives. One in five people die waiting for organs. “It is such a precious thing,” says Gloria. “But people need to talk about it.” Families can override the wishes of a deceased person in having their organs donated. But the Government says the law is on the recommendation of an expert panel and there are no moves to change it. “But if enough pressure is put on, anything can happen,” says Gloria. Last year, 215 people received organ transplants thanks to 73 donors. However, demand for organs still outstripped supply. Gloria says organ donation is all about giving people a second chance. “And people do wonderful things when they get a second chance.”

‘Gems’ of rare books discovered in the rough Charles Anderson Ivan Hodges’ heart started to race more than once while sorting through 10 tonnes of material. He had been brought in to sort through the estate of Euan Stewart – a man with a varied taste in rather obscure books and pamphlets. Euan had died and left behind an unruly amount of old treasures. But they were hidden in among everything else. “This chap was collecting for mega years,” says Ivan. “This is the real thing – things I’ve never seen.” So, as Ivan was sorting, he would come across things like a booklet on rugby rules from 1894, early Maori history, instructional pamphlets for ‘tommy gun’ automatic rifles and guides to diamond mining in South Africa. Aquabots are going to world champs There’s something in the water at Garin College. Sister and brother Lila and Ryan Adams, who are 15 and 14, hail from Rai Valley, Brian Shin, 15, is from Blenheim and Riley Morrison, 14, is from the Chatham Islands. But they all board at Garin College and found a shared passion in the building and using of “aquabots” – underwater remote-controlled robots. The team is so good at it that they won the overall New Zealand competition – beating out dozens of others. Now they are preparing to compete at the world championships in the US state of Massachusetts. “I like driving them around,” says Lila. “You learn a lot from the engineering and you have to use science to justify everything you do.” To be an aquabot champion you need to design and build an underwater Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV) that can pick up objects and place them in different areas – all while on a timer. “Manoeuvrability, stability and speed, that’s what you need,” says Lila. “You need to pick up objects still move and be balanced.” Brother Ryan prefers designing the ROVS. “It’s a lot of fun playing around with problem solving.” They will have plenty of that when they arrive in the US in early June to ply their skills against 100 other teams from around the world. In the meantime they have been fundraising for the trip and recently received a Royal Society grant to help them. “It’s pretty exciting,” says Lila.

Nelson Matters My top priority this parliamentary term is progressing a new hospital for Nelson which will be the largest building project ever for our region. Our population is growing and ageing and the current 149 bed facility has insufficient capacity. Medicine is also changing and the layout of the two fifty year old main tower blocks is no longer fit for modern care models. Recent reports and new regulations confirm the buildings are an earthquake risk. A big part of my work as Building Minister in the last Parliament was rewriting New Zealand’s laws in respect of

earthquake risk. We used to leave each council to set their own seismic standards. The new national requirements came into effect last July. These set a higher standard for emergency buildings like hospitals and set a tighter timetable for these to be upgraded. The District Health Board properly commissioned Beca to reassess all the Nelson Hospital buildings last year and briefed me on the reports last week. The two main towers rate at 40% and 35% of what is required of the new building standards. This means the risk to life in these older buildings is 5-10 times greater than if they were

new. The newer parts of the hospital like the operating theatres, emergency department and intensive care unit are sound but would not be useable after a quake because of the risk of damage from the surrounding tower blocks. Our earthquake risk is similar to Christchurch and I do not want a repeat of what occurred there when the emergency response was compromised by having damaged hospital facilities. A new hospital raises the question of whether it should be rebuilt on the existing site. I like the central city location and I don’t know of any other large vacant sites suitable.

I do not favour moving to Richmond as we need to recognise it provides services to Marlborough people as well. I estimate the cost at about $400 million for a new 200 bed facility for Nelson. National built twelve new hospitals during the last decade with the largest being Christchurch costing $750 million and Hamilton $500 million. The new Dunedin hospital is estimated at $1300 million but it is on a greenfields site. This $400 million price sounds daunting but Nelson Marlborough Health spend this amount every year on services. The Board is preparing a busi-

ness case for the Ministry of Health and Treasury this November with detailed design and costings in 2019. It is important the Board consults with our health professionals and public to get it right. My hope would be for construction to begin in 2020 and completion by 2023. I want to build cross party and wider community support to assist our health board in this mammoth task. Our goal should be a new, safer, larger hospital that can deliver quality health care for our community for the next half century. Advert.

From science, to romance, to history - there will be something for everyone among the 80 categories at the Founders Book Fair this weekend. More than 12,000 book lovers of all ages are expected to descend on Founders Heritage Park for the nine-day event, which kicks off this Saturday at 10am. The event started back in 1988 and is now a Queen's Birthday

A unique niche festival is coming to Nelson this weekend which promises to make festival goers feel as though they are “spending the weekend in Ireland”. Now in its 19th year, Ceol Aneas (pronounced kee-ol an-ass) is a cornerstone in Nelson’s winter calendar for music lovers. Ceol Aneas, meaning ‘Music of the South’ in Irish Gaelic, attracts traditional Irish musicians and music lovers from all around New Zealand and overseas and is recognised internationally as one of Australasia’s major Irish music gatherings. Organiser Jeanette Ware says the highlight of the weekend will be the Festival Showcase Concert, held at Nelson Centre of Musical Arts, which will feature two of Ireland’s most well known and revered musicians, Brid Harper and Dermot Byrne. “NCMA is so perfect for our needs, they have separate studios and green rooms for our tutorials and it has the third best acoustics in the Southern Hemisphere.” The Festival Showcase Concert is on Sunday June 3 at 7pm at NCMA. The club was established to offer young men the chance to take part in healthy sport. As reported in the June 2, 1868, edition of the Nelson Examiner, “a football club has been formed in Nelson which we hope to see prosper, as we do all sports which promote healthy exercise.” The club’s first football was of the hybrid of soccer and Aussie Rules. This brand was played for two years, then, early in 1870, Charles John Monro returned to Nelson after having been to school in England. Charles had played rugby overseas and suggested that the club try out the code. They did, and under Charles’s tuition the new game proved to be to their liking and was officially adopted, creating New Zealand’s first rugby football club. Nelson College had not taken up football seriously until the Nelson Club was established, but it is on record that the College had staged

a game in the early 1860s. Then in 1868, the college adopted the club’s version of rugby officially, and with two opposing forces in being, it was natural that a match should be arranged. This historical match, the first interclub fixture played under rugby rules in New Zealand, contested at the Botanical Reserve, Nelson, on Saturday, May 14, 1870. Nelson Club won by two goals to nil. An account of the game is given in The Colonist newspaper on Tuesday, May 17, 1870: “The toss for the ‘kick off ’ being won by the college, the respective sides are placed by the captains. First the ‘kick off ’ with the fast runners in attendance to follow up the ball; next a few to back them up, the ‘long kicks’ in the rear, and then the ’goal minders’. At first, the College had it all its own way and seemed intent on rushing the goal before the Town players shook themselves together; the ball was repeatedly charged close to the goal

Nelson Rugby Football Union to the time of the Nelson Bays amalgamation in 1969, only two of the union’s teams have taken the field without a Nelson Rugby Football Club player being included. In total, the club has produced four All Blacks, the latest being utility back David Havili who made his debut against Argen-

tina last year. The other men to don the black jersey were Bill Smith, who represented New Zealand against New South Wales in 1905, George Harper, who played Australia in 1893, and Eric (Fritz) Snow who toured South Africa in 1928 and Australia in 1929. The club has also produced a number of Maori All Blacks,

survivals and successes The club has survived a number of tribulations during its existence spanning three centuries. A major crisis for the club occurred from 1915-1919 during the first World War.

All of the club members were absent when the annual meeting was called, as they were overseas at war. The Nelson College Old Boys were in the same position and the two clubs joined together to form the Whakatu club. This allowed the Nelson Rugby Football Club to continue, and the agreement continued during World War II. In 1970 the Nelson Rugby Union amalgamated with the Golden Bay- Motueka Union to form Nelson Bays Rugby Union. After a 35-year run, Nelson Bays Rugby Union then amalgamated with Marlborough Rugby Union to form the Tasman Mako. Since the formation of Nelson Rugby Union, of which the club as a foundation member, as many as 224 players from the club have worn the regalia of the union. Perhaps the most notable of the achievements of Nelson Rugby Football Club is the fact that of the 418 first-class matches played by

Junior All Blacks and All Black Sevens players. The Seddon Shield came into being in 1906, when the Marlborough, West Coast, Buller and Nelson Rugby Unions purchased the trophy for competition among the four unions. The shield was named after Richard John Seddon, the West Coast miner who became one of

Nelson first won the shield in 1922 when they defeated Marlborough by 16 points to 3, returning home to a tumultuous welcome by thousands of delighted Nelsonians. ing a book for the 2020 celebration and a potential trip overseas. Shane says the state of the club is so strong, there is not reason it won’t survive another 150 years. “Based on the juniors we have coming through, I don’t see why the club won’t live to see its 300th jubilee.”

When Chae Baird-Booth saw Pascoe Auto up for sale on Trade Me in October last year, he decided to talk to his wife Emz about the idea of buying the business. Alex Ross’ seminal book on the music of the 20th Century, ‘The Rest is Noise’, is an apt title given that many people find the music of this time, at best ,challenging and, at worst, irritating. Inspired by the layout of the book, Sunday's concert combined the erudite Ross, the

engaging Bianca Andrew and the committed members of Stroma to give the audience a chronological snapshot of the most important composers of the last century. And they did it such a way as to delight and surprise. Ross had positive things to say about all the composers. He seamlessly commented on the cultural, social and political aspects of the time which influenced the composers. He talked about the ‘hidden beauty’ to be found and which

emerges when we listen carefully. Stroma allowed the audience to feel a part of the magic unfolding on the stage. The relationship between the players, the singer and the narrator was one of joy. Ross talked of the performers need to ‘unfold’ the notes. Stroma not only unfolded notes, they revelled in each piece. With this concert Chamber Music New Zealand can be justifiably proud of their appellation ‘music up close’.

Matthew Campbell 27, who worked in a foundry prior to leaving England, must have impressed authorities on the voyage to New Zealand as a

capable, intelligent young man. On the immigrant ship, Thomas Harrison, he ran school classes for both children and adults and within a month of arriving in Nelson in October 1842, he was placed in charge of Tasman Street School with an opening roll of 120 pupils.

Youth bands back to rock Theatre Royal Kate Russell The best of Nelson’s youth bands are getting ready to Rock the South next Friday night at the Theatre Royal. Now in its second year, the allages youth gig features nine up-and-coming local bands, including regional Smokefreerockquest (SFRQ) winners, The Recliners, from Nayland College. They will be joined live onstage by fellow Rockquest finalists Blind Eye, Acoustic Knot, Shut Up Connor (Waimea College), and Equinox (Nelson College for Girls). Completing the lineup is 1024 (Nelson Boys College), Ellie and Laura (Waimea College), 3’s a Crowd (Nayland College) and Finding Sam. The event also involves youth working behind the scenes, in a range of production and event management roles. Nelson City Council’s Axel de Maupeou, who supports Rock the South through the creative communities fund, says it’s “more than just an event”.

Featuring musicians from Ireland & Australia “It’s a platform for youth. Rock the South is an opportunity to support youth musical endeavours not only on the stage, but behind the scenes too. The same age group will be behind the mixing desk, doing the lighting and managing the event, supported by mentors. “It helps to kick-start that practical experience, especially those pursuing a career in any of these areas.” Axel says they are excited with this year’s on-stage line-up, and a diverse range of genres will be on offer, including alternative rock, pop, reggae, acoustic,

indie, country, funk and jazz. “The event was very successful last year, and we hope to continue it as a way to promote youth music,” he says. “There is a very strong, dynamic and enthusiastic bunch of musicians in Nelson who are very dedicated to showcase their talent.” Rock the South is on at the Theatre Royal on Friday June 8, at 7-10pm. Sport Derby on a roll Jonty Dine It takes a "special breed of woman" to play the fiercely physical endeavour that is roller derby, says a veteran of the sport. Boasting players nicknamed 'Violent Femme' and 'Eeny Meany', Nelson club the Sirens of Smash (SOS) certainly don't lack aggressive women. Founded in 2010, the Sirens of Smash are currently ranked 16th in the country and for the first time in its history, the club will field two teams this season. Club coach and player Meagan Turner, says she wanted to help the league progress and develop, so stepped into coaching. “We have focused on the growth and recruitment by creating a really supportive environment.” Her drive has been a success, with the club experiencing a surge in numbers. They have attracted so many new members, that the SOS will field a second side this season. “We now have about 30 players.” The SOS kicked off their 2018 season in Levin on May 19. Meagan began her roller derby career back in 2011. “I saw the Sirens play at the Trafalgar Centre and have fallen in love with it ever since.” She says the roller derby community is a global one. “Almost anywhere in the world you can find roller derby.” Her goal is to compete at the next World Cup in the United Kingdom. The United States are the current world champions, winning the 2018 tournament by beating Australia 187-147 in the final. Team Aotearoa finished 11th out of the 38 competing nations. The side enjoyed a comfortable 91-58 victory over the Taranaki Mountainairs at the Trafalgar Centre on Friday night and backed it up on Sunday afternoon with a win against the Super City Rangers, 101-86. The table toppers will return to home court on Saturday as they take on the Hawke’s Bay Hawks. Tip off at the Trafalgar Centre is at 7pm. Tennis: Talley’s junior representative tennis team took on Marlborough juniors over the weekend in a bid to regain the Gardiner Trophy. The sub-union finalists both enjoyed wins at the weekend ahead of the Nelson club rugby final on June 4. Marist and Stoke were victorious in their opening cross-over encounters on Saturday, the green machine sending Stoke a strong statement, hammering Moutere 57-5 while the Eagles needed a last minute try to scrape past Waitohi 31-29. Stoke struck first after a fortuitous bounce from a Sam Chamberlain cross kick fell for fullback Chris Little to run in under the sticks. A poor lineout throw on their own five metre line saw lock Mike Leger-Kula crash over for Waithohi, Corey Bovey adding the extras to lock things up 7-7. A high shot from prop Blair Prinsep allowed Bovey to take the lead before barnstorming number 8 Hugo Nankivell regained the ascendency for Stoke. When Sam put one down the throat of Fetuli Paea, the dangerous fullback put up a bomb which he regathered unopposed to score and take a 17-12 lead after a thrilling half of inter-regional rugby. Paea slipped through for his sec-

Nankivell then crossed for his second after running a beautiful line off half back Jack Grooby to reduce the deficit to five. Stoke skipper Sam Chamberlain says they will carry the momentum form today’s win into what will be a massive week for the club next week. “We will prepare hard for it because we know Marist will be tough, but we are looking forward to the challenge.” Meanwhile, Marist ran in nine

Just minutes before the break, Marist fullback Cleve Barell split the Moutere line and found number 8 Fuva Takiaki looming up on the inside for the home sides second. James once again slotted the extra two, as Marist took a 14-0 lead at half time. A brain explosion by Moutere’s fullback enabled Marist to con-

tinue the momentum early in the second. Instead of forcing an overcooked kick, Lagilagi Seru tried to run it out from his own line before kicking possession straight back to Marist. A beautiful skip pass from the base by replacement half back Connor Karena saw Julias Togafau power over. A fourth soon followed. Running a brilliant line, Hawkey thundered over to take his personal haul to 18. After openside Jakob Norris pounced onto a loose Moutere pass, Hawkey muscled his way over the line for his hat-trick as the score line began to blow out. Jakob was rewarded for his busy

afternoon shortly after, again latching onto an error by Moutere at the back of the scrum to take Marist into the forties, Barell missing the first conversion for Marist. Blindside flanker Te Puoho Stephens got himself in the action, brushing aside half a dozen feeble tackle attempts and linking with Connor who found himself unmarked on the wing, running it in for Marist’s seventh. Moutere managed a late consolation through number 8 Bill Salabogi with time almost up, but Marist responded immediately, Poihipi Clayton streaking twenty metres to dot down under the bar to bring up the half century. Sam Briggs then ghosted through the Moutere defence, centre Liam Boshoff finishing off the sweeping movement. Moutere had the final say, Seru making up for his earlier blunder with a five pointer. Marist captain Tyler McKinnonStevenson was wrapt with the 57-point rout. He says Marist will be full of confidence ahead of their showdown with Stoke next week. “We know what it will take to win the final and we will have to work our arses off.” In Marlborough, both Nelson and Waimea Old Boys registered wins over Central and Renwick.

Nelson duo off to world masters Jonty Dine

While their bodies may be slowing down, the competitive spirits of Tim Brenton and Jim Matthews are as strong as ever. The Nelson hockey stalwarts are currently preparing for the Grand Masters Hockey World Cup in Barcelona from June 20-30. Tim, 61, will be attending his eighth masters games and Jim, 64, his third. Jim and Tim will play in the men’s 65+ and men’s 60+ competitions respectively. "We’re really looking forward to it, international tournaments are quite different to the trans-Tasman competitions which we play in every second year," says Tim. Jim says teams around the globe all play with a unique style, making the tournament challenging. "For example, the Asian teams such as Korea or Japan, they are very skilful, quick and zippy." There are 18 teams in the over 60s

age group at the world masters and 14 in the over 65s. Tim, a centre forward, says they have drawn a challenging pool. "We have a very tough draw, we have to get through that first, but we will go there with the belief we can win it." Tim’s over-60 side will play Belgium, Argentina and England in pool play, who he says are among the toughest in the world. However, New Zealand certainly aren’t lacking talent themselves. "We have three players who represented New Zealand in the 80s," Tim says. Striker Jim says a lot of the players he will face have been internationals at a young age. “They were very good hockey players in their day, they still are, just a bit slower.” He says there is a lot of talent, everyone is just a bit older but it’s still good hockey to watch. "My wife, who was not a hockey person, has been to the last few tournaments

"It gets hard at this time of the year because it gets dark and miserable, but you have to keep your fitness up," says Tim. Jim rides to work every day and

runs two to three times per week. This is on top of the training camps they attend with their teams. "During a camp we will play up to three games over the weekend. When you get to our age recovery is pretty damn important, but we are still reason-

ably mobile." The tournament will be held in temperatures over 30-degrees in Barcelona. "Having played in Seoul and Singapore we should be ok, those places were really hot," Jim says. The pair play for the Waimea Endeavours and have been in rep teams together since the 1980s. Tim says his secret to longevity in the game has been simply staying injury-free. "At the end of the day I just love the game, what’s kept me in it is comradery, we’ve stuck together for years." Tim says if it was "more golden oldies, hit and giggle" he doesn’t think he would still be playing, "I just love the competitive side of things." Jim says that between the ears he is still the same and still goes out with that same competitiveness. He plans to keep playing until his body doesn’t allow. "They have 70s and 75s, well just keep turning up as long as we can."

The National Advocacy Trust is seeking a person with experience in complaint resolution and public speaking to join our team as a Health & Disability Advocate. The position is 40 hours per week, will be based in the Nelson office. The primary objectives of the position are the resolution of complaints between the parties and promoting the Code of Health and Disability Services Consumers’ Rights through formal education and networking. Advocates are required to travel to areas away from the main office, and for training purposes the occasional stay away from home will be necessary. Successful applicants will have a clean current driver’s licence and their own vehicle which will be used for work purposes. Our ideal candidate: Will have proven experience that enables them to meet the primary objectives and demonstrate a calm professional approach in every activity associated with their work. They will have the communication skills to be able to professionally navigate complex complaints directly with people and over the telephone. They will also need to demonstrate excellent written and computer skills including report writing, data entry and letter writing. The successful person must be able to show they can work alone but recognise also that being part of a team is integral to the success of an organisation. The successful person will be supported with ongoing professional development and may be required to undertake an approved advocacy qualification. Interested?
