Nelson WW2 veteran John Beeching will get his bronze memorial plaque after all, but it’s the kindness and generosity of Nelsonians – not the government – that has made it possible. Last week, Nelson Weekly told the story of London-born Beeching, who was set to miss out on the plaque reserved for veterans, because he has lived too long. The 93 year old has lived in New Zealand for 64 years, but because he is classed as a “Commonwealth veteran”, he won’t qualify for the plaque when he passes away, due to recent changes to the war pension’s act which came into effect on 1 July 2016. But since the article was published, four generous people have come forward offering to cover the $500 cost of John’s plaque, including an anonymous Auckland man, Port Nelson’s chief executive Martyn Byrne, a group of locals co-ordinated by Murray Leaning, and

ness ‘medals reunited’ and spent 37 years in military himself, with a significant portion of that time in the air force in the same ranks as John.

World War 2 hero John Beeching will miss out on a memorial plaque reserved for veterans, because he has lived too long. Born in London, John, 93, served
in World War II as a pilot for the Royal Air Force. He has lived in New Zealand for 64 years and calls himself a Kiwi - but because he is classed as a “commonwealth veteran”, he won’t qualify for a memorial bronze plaque when he passes away, due to recent changes to the war pensions act.
From 1 July 2016, Veterans Affairs New Zealand (VANZ) no longer accepted applications for plaques and headstones in respect of commonwealth veterans – only New Zealand veterans. Although commonwealth veterans can still be interred in a service cemetery, the cost of the
plaque, which is around $500, has to be met by the veteran’s family or estate. If John had passed away before the change his bronze plaque would have been covered. John says it is “unbelievable” that VANZ would even consider the change.
The patron of the Nelson RSA calls himself a “naturalised New Zealander” and has more than played his part, commanding 57 different Mosquito combat planes in dozens of missions over Europe.

the changed social, military and legal context. “The Veterans’ Support Act 2014 clearly defines its intention to best serve New Zealand veterans, who served at the direction of the New Zealand Government,” Mr Bennett says. It is not know how many Commonwealth veterans will be affected by these changes, with the national RSA office stating that they do not keep the numbers of Commonwealth veterans, with their “primary focus” being New Zealand’s 41,000 veterans. Meanwhile, the Royal Commonwealth Ex-Services League, based in the UK, say the only figure they could provide is 129, which is the number of ex British servicemen/women they have recorded on file since 2010.

Vegetable prices keep going up as the rain keeps coming down and wiping out vast tracts of plants on market gardens around a water-logged Nelson region. Lettuce prices at supermarkets and vegetable stores reached $4 each last week after the second tropical cyclone and third downpour in a month hit the region. Spinach and silverbeet prices are also high after root rot wiped out large sections of crops during what is already one of the wettest autumns on record. "It's been hard going," Appleby Fresh market gardener Mark O'Connor says. "We get the rain and nothing dries out before we get the next lot. "We have one great big pond that's about an acre of water The plants get wet feet and die off - it's killed all the spinach." MetService records show that last week's 44mm downpour was preceded by Cyclone Donna's 62mm and Cyclone Cook's 108mm. There were also two big peaks over 30mm when large low pressure systems came in from the Tasman Sea on January 22 and March 12 it was the fifth wettest MarchApril since records started in

Mark says the latest deluge was "probably the worst rain we've had of the three lots". "The cyclone (Donna) wasn't too bad and the next was okay, but last Thursday was quite heavy and that did a bit of damage because everything was already so wet. It had a huge affect on the spinach and baby-leafed crops." Appleby Fresh employs about 80 staff. Although fungal disease is a problem, Waimea Plains market gardener Rob Conning says one of the biggest impacts of the rain is that it "holds us up at planting". Some areas are also "too wet to get into to cut plants". However, Mark says Nelson market gardens are not as badly affected as Auckland and Horowhenua which "had a fair

Raeward Fresh Richmond owner Justin Blackler says there is a shortage of some vegetables and they are selling at the higher end of the price scale, but the good news is that prices in Nelson are still low compared to many other centres. Although the shortage is pushing prices up, Mark says vegetables are still a great value food item. "I find it a bit frustrating because vegetables are always great value for money. People are happy to pay $5 for a cup of coffee and yet they complain about a $4 cauliflower that feeds the whole family." Two Nelson charities, Big Brothers Big Sisters and Walk With Us, have cobbled together a partnership that will help keep vulnerable children active in the outdoors. Big Brothers Big Sisters is a youth mentoring programme that matches adult mentors with vulnerable children and young people aged between six and 18. It started in Nelson in 1998 and this year has almost 200 “matches”, making it the biggest Big Brothers Big Sisters in the country. However, Nelson programme director Chelsea Routhan says one of the problems is that some of the children can’t afford good walking or running shoes needed to enjoy outdoor excursions with their mentors. Now, she says, that problem has been solved after last year teaming up with by Walk With Us which has been providing children from families in-need with shoes for the last four years. “We have partnerships with about a dozen other groups like Walk With Us and it really helps us out,” Chelsea says. “There are a large number of families with financial difficulties so it’s
nice having Walk With Us providing free shoes for our children. “They’ve provided about 12 pairs of shoes in the last six months. The children mostly need the active or sporting shoes so they can do outdoor things with their mentors,” she says. Walk With Us trustee Anne-Marie Teece says they are delighted to be able to help Big Brothers Big Sisters. She says one of their trustees, Carol Shirley, is a mentor for Big Brothers Big Sisters and “they are such a great cause”. Walk with Us was formed in 2013 and has provided 290 free school and sports footwear for children, aged between five and 13, from families in-need. The trust is run solely by volunteers and is planning its next fundraiser on September 14. Stirling Sports, Smiths Sport Shoes, Number One Shoes and Whitwells in Motueka provides discounted shoes to the trust to help facilitate their work. Walk with Us Trust is run purely on a volunteers basis, this means that all money donated goes directly to purchasing shoes for local children. It was standing room only at Friday night’s Smokefree Rockquest Nelson finals, smoke billowed from the stage, the lights flashed, and the audience were up and jumping as Nelson College and Nelson College for Girls band Ivasa stole the show. The six-strong band lifted the energy at the Theatre Royal, dancing around the stage and dropping to the ground in their two song set. Ivasa impressed the judges with their showmanship, vocals, and musical talent, edging out Nayland College band So Far for the title of best band. Vocalist Emma Commons says the band’s fun-factor gave them the edge over their competition. “We decided that we needed to have fun on the stage and get across how much we enjoy what we do, and I guess that came across.” The band played two songs, Emma described one as ‘alternative’ and the other as ‘pure funk’. Photo: Brittany Spencer. says his nerves were high as he waited in the wing during the first song. “I was so nervous, but as soon as I came on I just started grooving and you get to that place where you’re on stage with all your mates doing something you love and it’s just magic.” For drummer Devon Brassfield, the final marked his fourth and final year competing in Rockquest and he says it has been his best year yet. “To get to the top tier of Rockquest in my last year is pretty awesome and to be able to play [our music] full bore in front of a crowd that is really into it

Now both Ivasa and So Far must prepare 15 minutes of their best material for selection as national finalists. Founder and director Pete Rainey says from here on the Nelson finalists will have to be well organised and work hard to make the most of the opportunity Smokefreerockquest offers. “They have to submit video footage of their original music that will be judged in
August as we lead up to the national final,” he says. “This process not only demands musical ability and creativity, they also learn to work together as a group and to develop the organisation and promotional skills they’ll need if they’re going to make it on the Kiwi music scene.” Also vying for a spot in the national finals is Brooklyn Scott from Garin College and Dayla SchmutzerWard and Delilah Botham from Waimea and Nayland Colleges, who placed first and second respectively in the Nelson solo-duo section announced at the regional heats last weekend.

Skinner loses faith in sanctuary Over 80 people packed into the Masonic Hall on Sunday to find out more about the Brook Valley Poison Drop, which is due to start this winter. Organised by Nelson City Councillor Tim Skinner, the public meeting was “an opportunity for the public to find out about the drop”, ask questions and hear from experts. Tim says he has “lost confidence” in the sanctuary. “The fence is built on land that continually slips and will compromise the predator-free zone,” he says. “They have planned an aerial poison drop in my neighbourhood without community consultation and the poison of choice has potential to contaminate land and waterways, and cause possible long term environmental damage.”

nelson L ve Hunting trio shoot near residential area: Police apprehended three males in Marsden Valley on Sunday night after one of the hunters shot at a stag in the reserve. Two shots were fired from the vehicle from a .22 rifle in the Quail Rise area. “One of the offenders wasn’t able to shoot the animal dead, so it will be wounded somewhere up there,” says Sgt David Lauer from Tasman District Police. “These deer are tame and are not a test of someone’s hunting skills.” Nelson Police have warned people from attempting to shoot deer in the Marsden Valley and will be taking a tough line on anyone using firearms near residential properties. Man pulled from flooded river overnight: A man was pulled out of his house bus after heavy rain flooded the river which he was parked beside. Emergency services arrived on the banks of the Appleby River near the Bartlett Road Quarry around 2am on Thursday morning to find the middle-aged local stranded in his bus, 25 metres out from the water line. The river was swollen and fast flowing, so police called in Nelson Surf Rescue who used an inflatable rescue boat to reach the bus and transport the man back to the bank, but not before he’d smoked a cigarette, grabbed his wallet, and put on a life jacket he had lying around in his bus. “When we ar-

Stoke’s Win Cozens turns 90 next month, but she proves age is only a number because she’s showing no signs of slowing down. The resident of the Ernest Rutherford Retirement Village volunteers for Grey Power and St Vincent de Paul, plays bowls twice a week, exercises, and sews up a storm for the other retirement village residents. Her 90th birthday is on June 6th, and she says that keeping busy and mobile is the key to her good health. “I don’t get a lot of time to sit down, I’m busy doing other things, you see - and that’s the way it should be,” she says. “My life revolves around my voluntary work, and I like to keep busy because it’s so easy to just sit and get depressed - do what you can, while you can. “But I don’t do my garden anymore - I’m getting a bit ancient for that,” she laughs. Win says she helps out at the St Vincent de Paul on Vanguard St every Tuesday afternoon, and she has volunteered at Grey Power

Photo: Kate Russell. for the last 14 years. “I go in there once a fortnight, as well as letter folding every three months, and I hope to carry on there for quite some time. I used to be on the committee but I came off that. My son said, ‘Mum,
you’re getting a bit old’. “I also take in a bit of sewing - I have quite a few customers here at the village. All the gentlemen want their trousers shortened and things like that.” Win doesn’t take any medication,
except for green lipped mussel capsules and vitamin C, three times a day. “That seems to keep me ok,” she says. Win was born in England, and spent most of her life living in
Wellington, where her late husband worked as a bus driver. “When we got married we came over to Nelson, where he worked for Waimea Dairy in Brightwater. That’s where I brought my children up. We moved to Richmond for a while, then Stoke, and stayed in Stoke,” she says. Win has a son in Nelson who visits her three times a week, and her daughter lives in Oamaru. She has four grandchildren but no great grandchildren yet, which she “hopes will come”. Win is also mad on sports, playing on the Ernest Rutherford bowling team. Back in the day she used to play for Tahunanui, where she was the president of the club. And, she’s a big tennis fan. “I love my tennis. I could sit up all hours, but I go to bed and watch it on TV.” She also likes clothes, shoes and earrings and boasts quite an impressive collection. “I’ve got 60 something pairs of earrings - but, why not,” she says. Win is having a morning tea today at Grey Power to celebrate her birthday and then she will be going down to Oamaru to celebrate the big day with her family.

Elation for George Locally Owned and Operated
Nelson Weekly reporter Simon Bloomberg watched cyclist George Bennett win the Tour of California with George's parents at their Aniseed Valley home on Sunday. What he saw was magnificent.
Marina Bennett is a nervous wreck huddled in her chair while her husband Paul is like a sprinter standing behind the starting blocks before the Olympic 100m final - all cool and calm on the outside but ready to explode on the inside. Marina gets up and makes tea and coffee, more for something to do than to keep her guests happy. Psychologists call it displacement behaviour. It's Sunday morning and the proud and extremely anxious Aniseed Valley parents are watching their son George on television riding in the final stage of the Tour of California. George leads the race by 35 seconds and is only about one hour and 40 kilometres from winning his first race on the world pro cycling tour. But it's going to be a long hour and the Bennett household is filled with tension as Paul and Marina and a group of friends including, Cleve Shearer and Robin Reid, watch George and the rest of the peloton wind their way up the last big climb of the tour. Cleve, who along with Jon Linyard, introduced George to cycling when he was at Waimea Intermediate, and Robin, who mentored George as a young, upand-coming rider, are almost as nervous and just as proud as Paul and Marina. The peloton reaches the summit of the last climb and starts descending towards the finish in Pasadena. If Marina was nervous before, now she is terrified - she has seen George take some horrific tumbles on these insanely high-speed descents. She can't look and prays that she doesn't hear the famous cycling commentators Paul Sherwen and Phil Liggett use the C word. Crash - there's been a crash! But Paul and Phil don't use the C word, like they did last year when George crashed badly and

Instead, they start talking about George being the first New Zealander to win a race on the World Tour as the riders charge along the flat into Pasadena. There's only six kilometres to go now and George's win is a done deal but Marina is not happy. She is obviously a believer in the commentators curse and lets Paul and Phil have both barrels. "Bloody hell, don't say that - he hasn't won yet," she says in despair. "It doesn't make any difference and besides he's got this nailed," a neighbour and one of George's former teachers, Marcus Swain, says, trying to reassure
her, but it doesn't work. Marina is on the edge of her seat and she's even more nervous than before. But George does nail it and when he raises his arms and crosses the finish line, Paul and Marina's first and most obvious reaction is not one of elation but utter relief. It's been a long sleepless week watching their son, firstly race into second before unexpectedly taking the lead in the time trial and then defending his lead on the last day. Then the relief is swept away by the joy and Paul rushes out and brings back a bottle of bubbly. There's congratulations and hugs all round as everyone clinks glasses and celebrates and watches as George, smiling broadly, is kissed by two gorgeous California girls on the podium. "Lucky sod," Paul jokes and then he tells everyone that George's sister Holly has already got dibs on the car George has won for winning the tour. Apparently, George will also be naming his nephew when he is born later this year after his brother "gave him naming rights if he won a tour". That evening, long after the excitement had died down and their friends have gone home, Paul and Marina sit at their table and do something they have wanted to do for the last eight years. They open a bottle of wine that George got from team-mate when they was racing near his home town in Italy. The Italian assured George it was a very special wine so he decided to give it to his parents, saying "open it when I win my first prorace." The wine, like George, had matured magnificently.

Challenge for kapa haka group

Kate Russell Nelson Central School is holding a ‘not your average’ fundraiser this weekend to help send their kapa haka group to nationals. Tamariki Toa needs to raise a whopping $67,000 to get 45 children and 15 adults to Gisborne for the National Primary Schools’ Kapa Haka competition in November, which they have qualified for. The competitive kapa haka group aged between 6 and 10 years is from the Central School Te Pouahi immersion unit. To help raise money for their trip, the group will be cooking up a storm at the ‘Central Challenge Family Adventure Race’ at the school this Sunday, making coffee, baking and nourishing hot soups. The main event of the fundraiser is the firstever Nelson Central Challenge - a ‘rogaine’ or team orienteering adventure - the highlight of a day packed with family fun, spot prizes, stalls, games and activities. Organiser Janja Heathfield says the event promises to offer exercise, teamwork and a whole lot of fun. “We’re setting this up for all abilities and levels of fitness so people can plan their route to visit as many checkpoints as they can in the time allowed,” she says. The event will also offer a mini gala with games, activities and a white elephant stall for bargain hunters. The Nelson Central Challenge is on Sunday May 28, registration is from 11am, with the race start at 12pm. Entry is $5 for an individual and $15 for a family or team of up to five people. The Bill of Rights - Freedom of Expression and Assembly in Nelson The City Amenity Bylaw has been drafted and is out for consultation. This is in response to the perceived problems of freedom camping and leaving items on public property in the CBD, issues that many residents want to see addressed. However the “Permit to Protest” clause forcing people to apply for a permit or face a fine of up to $20,000 to do that which is already a person’s right under the Bill of Rights Freedom of Expression and Assembly legislation is a clause in the bylaw that gives far too much arbitrary power to an employee of the Chief Executive.

In giving a council administration officer the full and arbitrary power to approve or decline an application or to insist on compliance conditions that could just as effectively hamstring any freedom of expression and assembly, is not in keeping with the democratic principles of New Zealand. Nelson City Council is asked to adopted a similar wording to that of Wellington City Council. Events held under the New Zealand Bill of Rights legislation: a/ To minimise disruption to pedestrians and other users, the organiser of any event evoking their rights and freedoms under New Zealand Bill of Rights legislation that is likely to inter-
fere with traffic or pedestrian thoroughfare in a public place shall notify the council as soon as reasonably practicable prior to the event. b/ After receiving notification, the council will provide relevant traffic management information to the organiser and/or Police. This wording draws a definite line between that which is organised for fun or profit from that which is organised out of public concern and human rights. If council has any issues with a bill of rights action they can advise the police of their concerns and police can advise organisers and/or council on the best course of action. If there are any problems with the action, then the police and the judiciary will be involved under due process. Photo: Supplied. in my final year of high school, so took a gap year in Australia—it was then I decided I wanted to try something that would really challenge me,” he says. “I knew that going to Law School would push me out of my comfort zone, and I was ready to take it on.” He says he looked forward to graduating and becoming the fourth generation. “Dad [was] there to watch me graduate, and I know my grandfather Ron, who died in 2013, and my great grandfather Vern, who died back in 1979, would
also be very proud of what we’ve all achieved as a family.” Jack started working with Kahui Legal at the end of his first year. “They really guided me through my studies and opened my eyes to the Māori legal space and opportunities in the Māori economy, which is a developing and really fascinating area of law.” Last year, Jack was the co-president of Nga Rangahautira, the Māori Law Students Association, and took part in a programme for young Māori leaders called Tuia Te Here Tangata.

Meeting room renamed to honour locals

Brittany Spencer Denis Le Cren and his late wife Helen have been celebrated for their decades of dedication to the Broadgreen Historic House. The Broadgreen Centre meeting room is now The Le Cren Room, renamed this week by the Broadgreen Society in the pair's honour. Denis and Helen have been involved with the historic house ever since they got married in 1961 and moved into a neighbouring cottage that once was a part of the property. Helen, who passed away late last year, spent hours volunteering as a guide and writing the audio tours while Denis designed and built the Broadgreen Centre and put together a book detailing the house’s history. “We’ve been close to it for a long, long time, and it means a lot to us, really,” says Denis. “Helen initially got involved because we lived next door and knew the family, she had an empathy for the building and really wanted to see it preserved.” Denis says he is proud, pleased, and humbled, and says Helen would’ve been just as happy. “She put a huge amount of time and love into the house so she’d have been very pleased.”

Being part of a club is a great way to meet new people, share your skills or learn new skills alongside others who have the same interests. Sometimes it can be hard to think of a group to join and even harder to find a way of contacting them. Clubs can also find it hard to attract new members, which is why Nelson Weekly has gathered a selection of local clubs that want to meet you. Take some time to learn about the different groups you could be a part of and see if any of them take your fancy. The Nelson Triathlon and Multisport club prides itself on its friendly atmosphere. Everyone is made to feel welcome, no matter what their ability. The club organises a dozen triathlons and duathlons each year, utilising the safe roads and forests of Rabbit Island to offer both road bike and mountainbike events. The Port Nelson Summer Sea Series of 18 swims has been a vital part of our activity for the past decade. Running from November to March, the series is a great place to discover the fun of sea swimming in a safe environment. Courses vary from

Nelson gym gets new floor Nelson gymnasts will be springing across a new floor in a matter of months following a massive fundraising effort by Gymnastics Nelson. The club is set to host the Gymnastics New Zealand National Artsitic Champs in October, but to do that they need a new $25,000 floor and new equipment. Gymnastics Nelson’s Natalie Al-
lam says they have had their current floor for a long time. “It is the central part of our gymnastics club and is used by every group, therefore had a lot of wear and tear.” Alongside sausage sizzles and a number of grants, including a $12,500 grant from the New Zealand Community Trust, the gym are edging closer to their target
and they couldn’t be more excited. “We are enormously grateful and thankful,” says Natalie. “It means the world to us to be able to provide new equipment for our members.” If you’re interested in helping Gymnastics Nelson raise the remainder of the money needed to purchase the new floor, contact the club on 0800 GYMNAST.

Delays to Queen St upgrade Contractors will be increasing the number of workers to try and make up for lost time after toxic roading material, bundles of data cabling and Argentine ants
slowed progress during the first stage of the Queen St redevelopment. The $11million upgrade, which started on February 7, is designed
to increase the capacity of stormwater pipes and direct water away from buildings to prevent similar flooding which devastated the town in 2011 and 2013. Water pipes and telecommunications and power services are also being replaced and the streetscape modernised to create a more pedestrian-friendly space for the community. lenging, but contractors have hit even more in-ground problems than expected which “means we have moved slower than anticipated”. “We found a road under the road and we had to stop for a while and get the soil tested because in those days they used a more toxic material. We had an expert look at it and some parts were toxic cold tar so we made sure people were properly protected and wore breathing apparatus. “We’ve also encountered nests of Argentine ants and had to get experts in to exterminate and remove and dispose of them as well. There’s also been lot of Chorus data cables and it’s been a very delicate operation to unearth, replace and lower them and then put new ducting in for future cables, but that work has been completed ahead of time which is good news.” Russell says Downer will now be “bringing in extra crew” to advance the installation of the stormwater pipe and is already working on the footpaths during the night to minimise disruption to businesses. Richmond Unlimited’s Belinda de Clercq says Queen St retailers and businesses expressed concern at the delays at a meeting last week. She says they are pleased the contractor is taking steps to “hopefully speed up the process” to minimise the impact of the work on businesses.

The saying goes a game of rugby is won in the forwards, but when Nelson College and Waimea Combined meet in the UC Championship secondary school rugby fixture on Saturday, it may come down to the two men at the back. Waimea Combined's flying fullback Mattie Stevenson and Nelson's captain Leicester Faingaanuku may hold the scoring key to the fixture at Waimea College. Garin College's Mattie has scored five tries in his last two games, including a double on Saturday in a 33-10 win over Burnside High School. Nelson College put more than 70 points on Burnside a fortnight ago, before having the bye last weekend. Leicester is a damaging runner with ball in hand; he attracts defenders and busts tackles with ease. Not only is he the team's top attacking weapon, but he also
kicks the goals. Nelson College will likely have an edge in the forwards through their superior size.

Richmond coach Matt Campbell says the slow start cost his team a match they could have won. “Sure, it was great to get a share of the points from where we were in the game, but you have to ask why were in that situation in the first place. “We have to find ways of being switched on for a full 90-minute performance.” Matt says his team is aware this was the point of the season last year where things fell apart for them and they are eager to avoid a repeat of those efforts. The Tasman United women’s team did find the back of the net and earned a win and a draw from their double-header. Jacob Page One of Nelson hockey's top female players has praised Nelson hockey's decision to mix the top grades of the club competition and allow top women's players to play against men this season. Diane Webb, a New Zealand masters veteran, is one of those players given dispensation to play against men this year as the sport looks for innovative ways to keep people in the game as the pressures of modern life draw people away from Saturday sport. The Federal player says, while the men are faster and more physical, women can and have been competitive this year, with a women's team beating a men's division two team last week. "It's making us train harder because playing against men you have to be faster and

In his own words, Tom Ingham had his best game ever in a Nelson Giants shirt on Friday night. His timing was impeccable, as his strong first half thanks in part to being in the starting five, helped the Mike Pero Giants to an 8674 win over the Hawke's Bay Hawks at the Trafalgar Centre. What looked comfortable in the finish was anything but with one quarter to play. With Tom sitting on the bench, the Hawks won the third quarter 248, pulling them back into a match they seemed destined to lose by plenty at halftime. Tom scored 16 of his 21 points in the first half to give the Giants a commanding lead. He added nine rebounds and two assists in his stellar night. "Once that first three dropped I felt good, so I
thought why not shoot another and that went down." Tom says teammate Dion Prewster has been "taking me under his wing". "Dion has been working on my shot and when you have people like that helping you it makes games like this extra special. "It's easily my best game ever for the team." Tom says the Giants, who were missing point guard Kyle Adnam and captain Sam Dempster through injury, just knew they had to stick to their structures in the fourth quarter. Key buckets from stand-in skipper Finn Delany (24) and Dion (23), who had an up and down night, proved decisive down the stretch as the Giants kept their season alive. They will now have to reverse the form book and take out the table-topping Wellington Saints in Nelson this Friday to keep their season alive.

Rugby took a backseat to player welfare during Nelson’s 32-14 win over Waitohi on Saturday. The match was abandoned with 15 minutes to go when Waitohi prop Bevan Moody had a cardiac arrest. Bevan was taken to Nelson Hospital and is still in an induced coma. Nelson assistant coach Chris Pugh says the entire Nelson Club’s thoughts were with Bevan. “It puts everything in perspective, as you say, you expect to play a game of
rugby and come home afterwards.” Nelson needed a sterner second half than what they showed in the first. They eventually ran in five tries and were well on their way to another comfortable victory when the match was abandoned. Hooker Brendan AsomuaGoodman scored twice as Nelson eventually found their groove. Chris says they did rest players after the midweek Tasman Makos trial but he was happy with how players steppedup when needed. “We still had key guys on the bench that we could
have called on like Craig Moore and Andrew Goodman, but we wanted to give some of the guys who played midweek a rest.” Chris says the team culture is what is leading to all the current success. “We have buy-in from all the players and they know what we are trying to achieve.” The team will face Harlequins on Saturday at Blenheim’s Lansdowne Park. Harlequins did default a home game to Waimea Old Boys in the last round but Chris was hopeful they would field a team this weekend.

Nelson No 8 Isaiah Miller did his chances of a Tasman Makos jersey no harm in the Tasman trial match in Blenheim. The hard-working forward got through a power of work in tough conditions as two teams of Makos hopefuls did battle at Lansdowne Park. The former Nelson College product says he is adjusting well to making the step-up from schoolboy rugby and has his sights firmly set on playing a role for the Makos in this year’s Mitre 10 Cup provincial competition. “It’s more physical obviously going up against grown men

an extra emphasis on fitness since his first XV days came to an end. “No 8s probably have to be the
fittest players on the field and it’s a role that’s always changing. “I’ve been working on my ball handing, being an option to carry the ball and being an option at the lineout. “The goal is always to be part of the Makos squad this year but I’m available for anything else.” Isaiah has formed a strong partnership with fellow loose forward Ethan Blackadder and the duo have been more than competitive against any senior counterparts this year. Nelson continue to go from strength to strength with a mix of youth and experience. “We seem to have found a good balance and all the young guys are keen to make an impact.”
