A sting on unsafe children’s toys and clothing in Nelson has uncovered some concerning items but the Commerce Commission

says, overall, Nelson retailers were “excellent”. The commission was in Nelson and Marlborough last week for four days checking toys, clothing and cots in “cheap stores” like $2 shops, The Warehouse, K-Mart, and second-hand stores.

Eight items were bought for closer inspection by the commission, which is charged with enforcing toy standards under the Fair Trading Act. Its competition manager, based in the commission’s Auckland office, John Lyall, says the maxi-

mum fine for businesses selling items that breach the standard is $600,000. He says they were looking for toys that have some parts that could choke a child under the age of three, cots and baby walkers that didn’t comply with the Prod-

uct Safety Standard, toys with lead paint and clothing without fire labelling. John says, amongst the items taken from some of the 50 stores they visited were rattles, mobiles and clothing.

A think it’s a real positive for that province.” John says they visited every second hand store they could find to see if they were selling noncompliant baby cots. “I was impressed with the second hand dealers, we went to all of the ones we could find and they all said ‘we’re aware of it, we just don’t want to go near stocking cots’.” He says they also visited used car yards to ensure they complied with the Consumer Information Act. “Pretty much, they all did. There was one instance which I can’t comment on.”

The Nelson Tasman Hospice Shop in Richmond has been using CCTV to catch shoplifters, but now its hoping footage from the security cameras will help them find a woman who dropped a “substantial” amount of cash in the shop last month. One of the shop’s volunteers found the money on the floor of the busy Queen St shop in the afternoon on February 15. Although the shop was full of customers at the time, manager Karen Mackenzie–Howe says they were able to see a female customer dropping the cash on the CCTV at around 1.30pm and now they want to find her to return the money. Karen says they notified police about the lost money but decided to “be more proactive” about finding the woman. They put a notice in the shop

has claimed the money and now they have come to the Nelson Weekly to try and track down the woman. “We went to the police and they said the money would go to the finder if it wasn’t claimed by a certain time,” Karen says. “The volunteer who found it suggested we should be more proactive and said ‘let’s go to the Weekly to see if they would do a story’, and see if the woman or someone who knows her reads it. “We have lots of people leaving things behind in the shop and we usually manage to find them through the CCTV cameras and make sure the lost items are returned the right person. It’s a bit unusual that the woman hasn’t noticed she is missing such a large sum of money, but hopefully this will help.” Anyone who knows the woman can contact the Nelson Tasman Hospice Shop on 03 543 7017.

Port Nelson opens its doors to community Jessie Johnston Every three years people get the chance to have a sneak peek at the inner workings of Port Nelson, and last Sunday there were plenty keen to take staff up on the offer. “Port Nelson is such a big part of the community, everybody drives past it on a daily basis, it’s also half-owned by the council so everybody’s rates goes towards it, so the open day is really to give people an inside look at the port and an inside knowledge on what’s happening,” says event coordinator Jennie Harrison. Those there on the day were able to look inside the port’s brandnew 13,000m2 logistics facility, view footage of the port’s working areas and activities, see the brand new Tōia tugboat and get handson with a heavy equipment display. Guided bus tours were also available, as well as displays put on by St John Cadets and Ministry of Inspiration. Big Brothers, Big Sisters was also there, as they are one of the community groups supported by Port Nelson. “We’ve had very good interest, I’d say well over 2000 people have come through today and everybody has left very happy, having learnt new things about the port,” says Jennie.

A gold watch, a safe, and a message in a bottle, were among the items found in Saturday’s Big Beach Clean. Over 4.7 tonnes of rubbish was removed from the region’s beaches after 600 volunteers spent Saturday morning picking up rubbish along the coast between Totaranui and Pepin Island. The rubbish cleared included the usual tyres, rusty drums, glass and plastic, but among the rubbish were also a gold watch, a safe, a broken toilet, an oven, and a message in a bottle. The message in a bottle, which dates back to 2000, was found off Jacketts Island and contains two names and a local phone number. Efforts are underway to contact the people who wrote the message. The amount of rubbish collected is significantly up on the 3.93 tonnes collected in 2014, but still remains under half the amount of rubbish collected in the first Big Beach Clean in 2010, during which 10.48 tonnes was removed. LAND DEAL UPHELD: The Supreme Court ruled the Government must honour a deal dating back to 1841 over Maori land settlements in Nelson. The 4-1 decision in favour of Wakatu descendants found the Crown failed in its duty to preserve a proportion of settlement land for Maori owners. It dates back to the early settlements known as the Nelson Tenths, in which the New Zealand Company purchased land from Maori landowners. The case has been before the courts since 2010.

nelson L ve Man charged following Coastal Highway crash: A 63-year-old man from the USA has been charged following the tragic crash on SH60 on Monday, where two people were killed and four people were seriously injured. The man now faces charges of two counts of Careless Driving Causing Death and four counts of Careless Driving Causing Injury. On Tuesday, police identified Stephen Anthony Jayes, aged 41 of Nelson, as one of the two people killed in the crash. On Friday, police named the second victim in the crash as 69-year-old Kevin Gerard Whitburn from Christchurch.

Specialists save injured caver: A team of caving specialists has rescued an injured woman from the bottom of the country’s deepest sinkhole. The rescue team brought the 25-yearold Canadian woman out of Harwoods Hole, Takaka Hill, shortly before 8.30pm Tuesday. Wednesday morning she was in a stable condition at Nelson Hospital after suffering shoulder and hand injuries after falling 10 metres inside the cave. Stoke family wins best restoration at boat show Jessie Johnston Reporter

The New Zealand Antique and Classic Boat Show attracted the best of the best for two days of impressive boating action. Around 130 clinkers, steam launches, classic motorboats, sailing dinghies and, of course, the owners, made their way to Lake Rotoiti last weekend, including Wayne and Carol Edmonds from Stoke. Omerta, their 1920s Gentleman’s Racer, was a thing of beauty as it sat glistening in the sun, so it was no surprise when it was awarded the prize for Best Restoration. They purchased the clinker a year ago out of Auckland, immediately getting stuck into the task of restoring her to her former glory. Carol came across the craft on an online auction site after Wayne had been looking for the perfect restoration project for some time, this boat ticking all the right boxes. “Wayne’s had a magazine with this shape in it since about 2006,” says Carol. While the Omerta has maintained her original motor, seats, hull and

some brass work, Wayne’s yearlong quest to complete her restoration has involved a number of helping hands, including the boat building skills of Peter Murton. While Wayne did the sanding, Peter rebuilt the decks before a friend at Custom Colours varnished the craft. They also sourced the remaining brass pieces needed for the exterior and dials from Canada and Australia. Wayne says launching the Omerta has been the most enjoyable part of the restoration process, although they had a few teething troubles with the motor to start with. With a bach at Lake Rotoiti that Wayne, Carol and their three kids visit every second weekend, Wayne says the Omerta will certainly get plenty of time out on the water. As for taking home the prize for Best Restoration, “We’ve been to every boat show, and I’ve had other classic boats on display before, but this is the first award we’ve won,” says Wayne. “I was quite surprised really, didn’t expect it but it’s nice to be recognised for the effort you put in.” The Jens Hanson trophy for Best Vessel Overall went to Malolo, owned by Max Cumming and Ra Tangaroa from Russell.

Two dead in horror crash, Tuesday, February 28: On Friday, police named the second person killed in the multiple car crash that occurred on the Coastal Highway on February 27. The man was 69 year old Kevin Gerard Whitburn from Christchurch. Stephen Anthony Jayes, a 41-year-old Nelson father, was the other fatality, his name was released by police earlier in the week. A 63-year-old man from the USA faces charges of two counts of careless driving causing death and four counts of careless driving causing injury, following the tragic accident. Volunteer-less shops, Tuesday, February 14: Nelson Hospice has been “swamped” with phone calls since Nelson Weekly ran an article putting a call out for volunteers for their Nelson Hospice shop. Hospice volunteer manager Rebecca Colley says they had an “outstanding response” and they are still getting phone calls. “I have interviewed about 12 people and have eight confirmed to attend the orientation. Everyone has been accepted but we’re just working out times for getting people in the roster and trained,” she says. A young Nelson woman with a passion for history is teaching locals a thing or two about the central city’s past with her increasingly-popular walking tours. Jessie Bray Sharpin, who is a Collections Technician at Nelson Provincial Museum, runs her ‘Hidden Histories’ walking tours every Thursday evening as a way to raise money for a workshop that she’s been selected for in the UK this July - the Open Palace Programme. She will be part of a select group of 25 who will travel around different heritage buildings in England, learning from the professionals who work at these places. Her tours have been the talk of the town, with locals and visitors alike discovering the fascinating hidden histories of people and places in the city's past. Power donation for warmer homes Local power company Network Tasman have jumped on board with the Warmer Healthier Homes project, donating $20,000 to help the community insulate and heat their homes. The Warmer Healthier Homes project assists homeowners in improving insulation and heating by retrofitting insulation in homes. So far, the project has insulated 482 homes in its first two years, with 85 per

cent referred to the scheme by GPs and clinicians. Bill Dahlberg, chair of the Warmer Healthier Homes steering committee, says he is delighted with the donation that was pledged in January. “From their $20,000 funding, they’re getting an input into 30 homes throughout the region.” Network Tasman trustee Ian Barker says he is pleased to have been involved in authorising the

Kate Russell Two major developments on Tahunanui Drive are on track and set to open by mid-2017. The House Renovators on the corner of Tahunanui Drive and Green St has been demolished to make way for a new Night ‘n Day complex. The late night convenience store has over 50 franchises around New Zealand, including one on Trafalgar St and another on Main Rd Stoke. A spokesperson from Night ‘n Day’s head office, Matthew Lane, says they are hoping to have the development complete and the store open by July. He says the complex will house another similarsized shop which will be available to lease, as well as seven or eight parking spaces. “It will be very similar to the Trafalgar St store, but we will be introducing some new concepts such as a seating area and an internal toilet,” he says. Matthew says they have had people express concern with the development being so close to the Green St residential area, but reassures that it will not cause any disruptions. Meanwhile, Manor Property Services (MPS) is all on track with their build at the former Superior Spares wrecking yard next to Tahunanui School. MPS director Mark Forbes says the framing of the showroom area is up and they are expecting the main concrete slab to be in place this week. They hope to have completely moved from their current Vanguard St premises by June.

John Goodman remembered for lifetime contribution Founding Tasman Rugby Union president and former Nelson Cricket president John Goodman was farewelled yesterday. John died last week and his lifetime of dedication to rugby, cricket and the wider community was celebrated with a service at the Trafalgar Park pavilion. Bagpipes - you either love them or you hate them, I’ve never met a single person out there who sits on the fence when it comes to these divisive instruments. As a Scot, my inner patriot stirs every time I hear a piper, but after my latest Give it a Go Girl I’m pretty sure I’ve destroyed the iconic instrument’s reputation. The Celtic Pipe Band Nelson have been together for 10 years and this weekend are hosting the 2017 New Zealand and South Pacific Pipe Band Championships at Trafalgar Park. So I popped along to give it a go and see the masters at work, ahead of their national competition. Pipe bands are made up of four instruments, the classic bagpipe, snare drum, tenor drum and bass drum, and in my complete naivety I thought I would be able to play any of them to a certain degree. As soon as I walked into the Stoke School Hall where the Celtic Pipe Band Nelson practice each week, I was assigned to Leah McConnon, a 10-year old tenor drummer, and Johan Banks, a 14-year old piper. Despite being perfectly healthy, my little lungs have the strength of a chain-smoking asthmatic, which meant that while I could blow up the bladder, I couldn’t produce enough pressure to push the air out through the chanter, otherwise known as the melody pipe. Because the air didn’t reach the chanter, all that came out when I finally managed to make some sound were terrible, inconsistent, groaning noises. I could’ve made any bagpipe lover cover their ears and contort their face in disgust, in fact the words ‘that actually hurts’ may have been used by a bystander. Everyone, including myself, was in fits of laughter with each terrible sound that floated out of the pipes. After that, everyone was given earplugs. I really wish I was kidding at this point but, unfortunately, that’s how bad I was, even Johan only gave me a two out of ten for my efforts. I have decided that although I still love bagpipes, for the sake of everyone around, I will never play them again. The pipe band champs at Trafalgar Park are on March 10 and 11. Entry is $10 and children are free.

Situated in the heart of Stoke this new Council facility is due for completion at the end of 2017. This is an exciting opportunity for a café to lease a 100sqm area within the new facility. The ‘Welcome to Nelson Sign Competition’ was organised late last year by Arts Council Nelson on behalf of Nelson City Council, with local designer Andy Clover creating the winning image, to replace the outdated sign. 83 designs were submitted for the creative challenge which was targeted at Nelson residents and provided wide community engagement. Artwork was submitted by those as young as seven to 82, with the range of submitted imagery as diverse as the age gap.

The designs were judged by a panel of executive board members from Arts Council Nelson along with staff from Nelson City Council. The panel was looking for clear, bold and bright designs and needed to contain the words “Welcome to Nelson”. Chair of Community Services Committee, Councillor Gaile Noonan, says Andy’s design met this brief perfectly. “It’s great that we are able to revamp our Welcome to Nelson sign with something fresh and inviting, while also showcasing a local designer,” she says. “A big thank you to everyone who took the time to send in their submissions. It was fantastic to see the effort from so many people wishing to make a warm welcome sign for locals and visitors.”

Road safety demonstrations coming to you Stopping distance demonstrations are being held as part of a road safety campaign to show how long it takes for a car to stop when travelling at different speeds. Building local communities This is the mantra of US Neighbourhoods champion Jim Diers who returns to Nelson on 20 – 21 March to co-host an energetic two day ‘Activating Community’ workshop. This time, Jim will be working alongside Inspiring Communities, New Zealand’s leading community-led development organisation. “We know many people have ideas for things they’d like to see happen in their local community but they’re not sure what to do next. This workshop is about giving people the know-how and confidence to get their ideas into action,” says Megan Courtney from the Inspiring Communities team. “Day one focuses on understanding local community assets and best ways to involve local people. Day two, we go out and practice what we’ve learned in Tahunanui and Victory communities – and hopefully come up with some new action projects along the way,” Megan adds. It’s a formula that works. “When we ran this workshop in Dunedin last year, all kinds of exciting things happened – from community organisations working with communities in new ways, to new groups forming to progress projects created in the workshop.” “We have seed funding available to help kickstart new projects in Nelson too. It really helps those with

The work includes extending the concrete pier 700mm below the river bed. This is being done using a temporary cofferdam around the piers (a structure designed to keep the water out of the area so work can be done on the piers). This temporary structure is lined with black plastic, which contains the sediment and is keeping the river running clear. It means people are still able to continue to enjoy swimming in their favourite holes. The strengthening will be done using steel formwork around the central pier which will support the concrete during the curing process. The concrete is being pumped through a special hose from a concrete truck on land. Other strengthening work was recently completed on the Poleford Bridge, further upstream in the Maitai River.

Nelson’s Tanya Hawley is happy playing hockey on her terms. She is one of a quartet of Tasman players who have been picked to play for teams in the Festival of Hockey next month. The 27-year-old defender says being part of the New Zealand Affiliates team for a tournament which involves other Kiwi teams like New Zealand Universities, New Zealand India and New Zealand Maori, was a huge thrill. "It’s my second time in and I’m looking forward to a week of hockey." The best players from the tournament get picked for a team that will travel to Fiji for matches later in the year. Tanya, whose game is based around good stick control and an uncompromising approach to tackles, says the game has been part of her life for a long time.

we were in Middlemarch. “It’s one of those places where

the kids played hockey, the mums played netball and the dads played rugby.” Tanya and her family moved to Nelson when she was 10, where she went down to the hockey turf and met her mentor and current Tasman women’s coach Paul Jones. From there, she has been a regular fixture in representative and age-group teams ever since. She is often seen on the goal line during penalty corners and often acts as the last line of defence when the shot comes in. She says she still has the hunger to play top level hockey and is keen to play overseas if given the opportunity. SpOrTS BoWLS: Stoke finished runners up in the National Inter-Club bowls finals in Auckland over the weekend. They lost the decider to Eastbourne with only world champion Shannon McIlroy winning his final match. GoLF: Tasman's Sean Riordan finished tied for 39th at the New Zealand PGA Championship at the Manawatu Golf Club. Sean finished at even par for the tournament, 14 shots behind the winner. Fellow Tasman golfers Ryan Chisnall, David Riordan and Hamish Campbell all missed the cut. GodZone: Nelson teams featured prominently in the GODZone Adventure Race that finished in Queenstown on Saturday. Dan Busch was a member of the second-placed Yealands Family Wines team finishing the 410km multisport race in three days, six hours and one minute. Brent Edwards, Ash Whitehead, Stu Lynch and Georgia Whitla of Swordfox were third, Tineli-Rollo’s Outdoors' Gerard Malcolm, Gilbert Robertson, Sakkie Meyer and Emma McCosh were 11th, followed by Nathan Sturrock in Team Greenhorns in 12th. Team Stihl's Jane Orbell, Nigel Kelly, Mike Buschl and Simon Bloomberg were 18th, with Marina Buonocore, Tim Bygate, Glenn Lilley and Brendon Crequer of Team Waypoints in 36th. Chris, from Canterbury, came back from losing the first set to Scott Galloway in a gripping five-set final 9-11, 1210, 12-10, 11-13, 11-6. Chris even replayed match point after initially winning it on a rally, which he described as “a crap way to end a final”. Both men are ranked in the top 12 squash players in New Zealand but Chris proved too strong during the crucial points. Meanwhile, Megan, who is ranked 75th in the world, downed the up-and-coming Kaitlyn Watts in three sets in the women’s decider, but confessed she was nervous. “Kaitlyn came out firing in the first few points and I think my mum was sitting there thinking I was going to lose, but the first four points aren’t always the best indication. “I knew (Kaitlyn) had been working hard on her fitness during the off-

speedway popular attraction in Nelson and two nights of this bone and carcrunching action are not to be missed. The format is that all teams race each other over the first night and early on night two, then the teams that are first and second after the qualifying races battle it out in the final and race for the $3000 prize money for first place. The teams that finish in third and fourth will also be giving it their best shot to try and grab the final spot on the podium. All going well, three cars from each team will all race together in one race called the Dash for Cash near the end of the night where $1000 will be handed to the team that gets their car across the line in first place. It will be interesting to see how this one pans out. The other big show over the two nights is the Vertex Super Cup where the top Super Saloon drivers in the South Island converge on the Moutere clay to contest this season-long series. To top it off, we here at the Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway get to host the penultimate and final rounds over the two nights so we get to see who takes out the championship which

is an added bonus. These fire-breathing big V8 American styled Super Saloons have to be seen to be believed as they race door to door around our tight track which can often end in tears for some. But without the risk, there is no reward to get the results needed to be at the pointy end on pay day. The massive amount of time, effort and, of course, the big budgets make this class one of the big crowd-pleasers at each track they go to. With Super Saloon numbers declining here in Nelson we don’t get to see these cars here as often as we like but it’s always great to see them back here putting on the blue ribbon shows we expect from them. The third big promotion is the Ray White Richmond-Nelson Youth Ministock Mania. Two nights where we get to see the young talent of New Zealand speedway show us just how bright the future of our sport is, and let me tell you it’s looking brighter than ever. These kids, aged between 12 and 16, get to show us just how much their training and practice in the Ministock class has paid off as they are given the chance to race against some of the best racers their age in

This season the promotions team have changed the format in the hope that all the drivers get to challenge not only themselves but the others around them to take the win in their respective age groups. The old three-heat cumulative point’s deal has gone in favour of a two-race heats and a feature race format on each of the two nights. The feature race is expected to be around the 20lap mark at both shows so we should see the cream rise to the top in each of the two feature races. Now, I will guarantee that most of these kids have never raced that many laps in a single race before so it will be a learning curve for some before they move into the bigger adult classes and be a part of the “Big

Show”. If you can’t make it to either of these two shows, then fear not as the Nelson Speedway in association with The Pits Media are live streaming both nights of this huge show.
