Terror in Marsden Valley
‘My mother lost her husband and then got kidnapped’ Charles Anderson Editor
charles@nelsonweekly.co.nz EXCLUSIVE
Reverend David Barnes was finalising the details of his father’s
burial at Marsden Cemetery, when he left his elderly mother and wife in his car with the engine running. “I would usually never do that, but I literally was only going into
the office for a minute.” His 90-year-old father had died the previous evening and the family was already shaken. But when came back to the car he was in for another “horror”.
The car, which was a gift from a friend, was gone, along with his mother and wife. “It was terrible, have you ever heard anything like that before?” While David was organising the
burial, a 15-year-old girl, who was working under supervision at the cemetery, allegedly escaped. David says the girl then saw his car

A stack of pharmaceutical invoices dated from 1973 were found during renovations of the St Vincent St/Toi Toi St corner site late last year, when Victory Square Pharmacy made the move back to its old premises. The pharmacy’s roots in Victory go back to the 1950s, moving several times around the shopping village until current owners, Sean and Deirdre Magee, decided to take the pharmacy back to the corner site. But Sean made an interesting discovery when they were re-wiring the building. “I was up in the roof with my head torch on and I started biffing these things out, just thinking they were rubbish. But then Deirdre took one look at them and realised that they

She was driving erratically and missing vehicles and almost crashing.” It was only when the girl slowed at the intersection of Marsden Valley and the Ridgeway that the two women, one 87-years-old, were able to scramble out. They then walked back the cemetery where David was only just trying to figure out

Nelson’s older population has been neglected by this year’s census, says SeniorNet. Today is census day, however, instead of a census collector delivering paper forms this year households will receive an access code letter to fill it out online. However, SeniorNet committee member Biddy Myers says that the Government has dropped the ball in not considering how an older population operates. “People of my generation haven’t been brought up with computers so it’s not our first choice of medium. There hasn’t been any advertising or support to ensure it is a success.” The goal of the census is to provide an accurate picture of New Zealand population structure, households and families, cultures and identities, education and training, employment status, incomes, transport and health. “People aren’t yet used to doing online stuff,” Biddy says. “Some have, but there is a whole ruck

You can still do you census for several days after the deadline, so tomorrow at 2pm and Friday at 10am there will be drop in sessions at SeniorNet in Pioneer Park. “People are beginning to panic as they realise over the weekend that they have got to do this. It is a compulsory thing,” Biddy says.
Nelson MP Nick Smith says the census operation is “turning to custard”. “I’m concerned that the census hasn’t had the level of publicity and support, and that administratively, the wheels are falling off.” He says he has had “dozens and dozens” of calls from confused people. “My worry is that even if you get 90 percent coverage, the data is not useful unless you get 100 per cent.” The online option was available in both the 2006 and 2013 census. Last census, one third of the country completed it online.

were the old invoices from the first owner of the pharmacy,” he says. “For some reason he just stored them up there for safekeeping and they just sat there for over 44 years.” And what makes the discovery even more interesting is that the man who wrote the invoices - Barry Nicholas - still works for the pharmaceutical supplier as the local manager and happened to recognise his writing on them. “We were just having a casual conversation, and Barry walks through the door as we were looking at them,” says Sean. “We said, ‘Barry, these might mean something to you’, and he said – ‘yes, that’s my handwriting’.” Barry started as a delivery boy for Kempthorne, Prosser and Co. when he left Nelson College in December 1965, and then he became one of the reps. He is now the Nelson manager for ProPharma. “We had a warehouse where the State Cinema building is on Trafalgar St. There were two or three of us who used to go around all the pharmacies
A ‘blast from the past’ has been found stashed away in the rooftops of one of Victory’s longest running institutions. in Nelson and Blenheim and get the orders and we would do deliveries twice a day,” says Barry. The products ordered are “very different” to what is ordered today, according to Deirdre. “They would have made a lot more things from scratch, whereas now the majority of it is already made up. Cough medicine would have come in a bottle and dispensed into smaller bottles for patients,” she says. Among the items ordered were Infagel antacid, baby food, hair perms, Corlan pellets, ‘action acne lotion’, bathroom scales, white coats for the pharmacists
at $11.70 each and Kodak film processing. “There are a lot of substances that are banned now like Sudafed elixir, Pseudoephedrine – which is now a restricted medicine.” Sean says the discovery has prompted a long-time Victory resident to bring in a medicine bottle from the original store. “A lot of customers have lived in this area all their lives, so when we moved a lot of people came in and told us their memories. “It’s neat – it’s like a little time capsule and a nice connection between reopening here and the original pharmacy.”

Nelson’s top streets for parking fines Sara Hollyman If you’re wanting to avoid a fine in central Nelson you’re better off parking on Hardy St than Trafalgar St, new figures from the Nelson City Council reveal. The Nelson Weekly asked the council for the top five streets for parking fines over the last year. Nelson City Council received $618,571 in parking revenue from 12,442 tickets over the past financial-year. Trafalgar St topped the list with 3400 tickets issued at a value of $188,837. However, it was Buxton Sq that received the most tickets with 3568. Council communications manager Paul Shattock says that while Buxton Square was the area that had the most infringements issued, 3568 tickets, it was the value of the infringements on Trafalgar St that put it at the top of the list. “For example, staying over the time limit (less than 30 minutes) is a $12 infringement, whereas parked with no WOF

is $200,” he says. Despite the high total amount, it was actually a drop in revenue compared to the previous two years which came in at $714,470 for the 16/17 year and $832,849 for the 15/16 year. Revenue has been declining since council introduced the ‘first hour free’ initiative in
2014. Kelly McLeod has recently moved here from the West Coast and she is happy with the parking in Nelson. “It’s adequate for now but it will have to be ready for the future. There are more people coming here, like me. The free hour is a good amount of time to be able to get stuff done.” Moutere resident Errol Beattie is also happy with the current parking. “Usually I’m just in for a short amount of time to go to the bank or something. It’s a great idea,” he says.

Glen residents rally to clean up waterfront Sara Hollyman The Nelson North Community has rallied together to tackle the huge job of cleaning up the waterfront after it was ravaged by Cyclone Fehi on February 1. The storm left a path of destruction at Glenduan, ruining walkways, roads and the beach front. The council got to work cleaning up immediately, but with resources stretched local resident Nicole Pooley decided that more needed to be done. “Over the last couple of weeks most families have been out here clearing for at least a couple of hours, but there’s still just so much more to be done,” she says. Nicole called the community together on Saturday to remove debris from the beach before anymore washed into the ocean. “There’s a lot of plastic on the beach and that’s going to wrap around fish and dolphins and all of the other cool stuff we have here. Then there’s the tar, it’s so sticky and it’s starting to leach into the ocean and that’s a terrible chemical.” The Glen sits on the edge of the Horoirangi Marine Reserve

beach after the storm surge retreated. “There were just huge chunks of it everywhere”. Around 50 members of the community spent three hours clear-
ing and collecting. They half-filled a skip provided by the Nelson City Council with tar, plastics, a chilly bin and a barbeque that were all found on the beach.
Nicole says it’s great to see the community coming together, with the Atawhai Four Square donating morning tea and Moana Seafoods proving a trailer for rubbish removal.

Nelson Fringe Festival gets bigger and better The Nelson Fringe Festival is promising to wow audiences with more shows, workshops and venues than ever before when it returns at the end of April. Now in its fourth year, the festival brings performers from around the world to showcase their unique talents for 10 days from April 27. On Sunday, the programme was officially launched with more than 40 performances across the Refinery Artspace and Ghost Light Theatre. Festival director Laura Irish says the fringe is going from strength to strength, with it almost doubling in size over two years. “It just shows how important a festival like this is for our community. It really is a celebration of the arts that sometimes struggle to find a space to be heard. We love giving a place for that kind of performance.” Laura says it’s an exciting phase for the festival, the programme of which can be pulled out of this week’s edition of the Nelson Weekly. She wanted to thank all the people who are making it possible, including the organising team and sponsors. “We really appreciate all the support we get but the best way people can support us is booking tickets to shows or workshops. They are affordable, diverse and wonderful.” The programme for the fringe can be pulled out of this edition, visited by downloading the Nelson App or by visiting www.nelsonfringe.co.nz

Checking out of historic bed and breakfast Charles Anderson It may be the garage sale to end all garage sales on Saturday when everything that goes with running an historic bed and breakfast for 20 years goes on the market. The Baywick Inn has been home to Tim Bayley and his wife Janet Southwick ever since they spotted it after returning from Janet’s native Canada. “We came here and took six months off and travelled the country to find out where we would live,” Janet says. “After six months of travelling we both looked at each other and said ‘definitely Nelson’.” Then they saw the historic home on Domett St and thought they had to have it. “We wanted something historic,” she says. “We wanted to be caretaker and look after it.” The home was originally build in 1885 by a banker from the Union Bank. It has also been home to a pastor and a pharmacy and neighbour to a brewery. “It’s nice to be surrounded by that sort of history,” Janet says. However, to help it pay for itself they quickly converted it into a bed and breakfast. The Baywick Inn was born. Over the years they have added to it
and even built a new home for themselves out the back. But Tim says it was time to move on. “It’s a long time in industry. It’s something that saps you. You don’t get a break and you are on call 24/7. Every person who shows up is in full holiday mode, so it’s demanding.” Janet originally worked in the hospitality industry and Tim was in construction, but they still had a slightly romantic notion of running their own place. “We didn’t think we would be as busy as we were. We do 300 couples a year. But we have really enjoyed it.” However, now the new owners are going to turn it back into a family home. Two retired couples have bought it and will live in it together. “So everything has to go. Furniture, paintings, electronics, televisions, toasters. A complete set of kitchenware and a tonne of linens and beds, duvets, electric blankets. Everything.” Tim and Janet say they are hoping for a quieter life out the back of the Baywick Inn. But Janet isn’t quite ready to let go of being a host just yet. She is likely to rent out one of the rooms in their new place as a bed and breakfast, too. The garage sale is at 51 Domett St on Saturday.

Gastro bug hits Nelson Hospital Staff reporter Eight people have been isolated in Nelson Hospital with gastroenteritis. Tests are being conducted by the hospital to determine the exact cause. Hospital operations manager and associate director of nursing Linda Ryan says that “robust infection prevention practice” is in place at the hospital to help prevent the spread of gastroenteritis to other patients, staff and visitors, but that the community has an important role to play also. "It’s really important not to visit people in hospital if you have diarrhoea or vomiting, and for up to 48 hours after those symptoms cease," she says. "We are managing the outbreak and are otherwise fully functional, but have that important message for our community.” Medical officer of health Dr Andrew Lindsay says that people should also avoid visiting resthomes and early childhood education centres if they have symptoms. Children with symptoms should be kept home from schools and ECEs, and adults should stay away from their workplace, while they are sick and for 48 hours after their last vomiting or diarrhoea episode.

$ Gastroenteritis has broken out at Nelson Hospital. Photo: File. "Gastroenteritis is highly infectious, very easily spread from person to person and people are contagious for up to 48 hours after symptoms have ceased. "Very young and older people are especially vulnerable,” Dr Lindsay says. "Regular and thorough hand washing, with lots of soap and hot water, is very important to prevent the spread.” Rest homes and ECEs in the Nelson and Tasman region have been advised by the Nelson Marlborough Public Health Service to be alert to symptoms and how to help prevent outbreaks. Symptoms of gastroenteritis are nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea, stomach cramps, headache, lowgrade fever, chills and muscle aches.

Now that Labour and NZ First are pushing it people don’t seem to have a problem with it.” The new agreement replaces the Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA) and is similar with some clauses having been ‘suspended’ now that the United States has dropped out. The two major concerns that have been suspended are New Zealand’s copyright terms and the changing of Pharmac’s structure which would have meant higher medication costs. Apart from this the agreement is “basically the same thing,” according to TPP Action Nelson “From the moment I walked in the door stressing due to spokesperson Mary Ellen O’Connor. service or lack of it elsewhere, they were amazing to deal “The new Labour-led government, which with… Highly recommend and will certainly use again.” promised an improvement review and - Leah Keown analysis of the TPPA, is going to sign what is fundamentally the same agreement with all “I heard about the great service at ColourPlus in Richmond so the same risks for our country. Your Voice Any councillor taking months leave should have requested a leave of absence without pay. The Nelson mayor knows very well that the new standing orders require Cr Fulton to request for a leave of absence if she isn’t going to be present for 4 or more meetings. She cannot just wing continual apologies, hoping that the public will not be aware that she is overseas training for a new career in Yoga teaching at ratepayers’ expense. Dan McGuire Vape culture on the rise That's just replacing more toxic stuff with slightly less toxic. Why would anyone do it? Sergey Ratakhin There's no adverse health effects been found yet from vaping. It's been around for several years now. It's been found to be 95 percent healthier than
smoking tobacco. Why wouldn't this be a good thing? Rachel Dunlop Vaping is a good way to get off the smokes and keep the habit, then slowly wean off the vape too. It is a very useful tool for quitting smoking. David Flynn I love how some vapers think it's acceptable to walk down the street vaping or disregard the "non-smoking" rules because they are "vaping" not "smoking". I don't want to inhale your cigarette smoke or your vape smoke... it doesn't matter whether it smells like death or like pineapples, it's still gross. Are there enough things for kids in Stoke to do? Nope. Council talked about plans to build a skatepark there years ago but Grey Power shut it down saying it would attract unsavoury troublesome youth. Ironic that they are now hanging around the library with nothing to do... Skateparks are great. Relatively cheap to build and maintain. With good lighting and cameras can be visible and easy to keep an eye on. Good healthy activity for kids of all ages. Look at Neale Park, it's a huge success. Sam Hill I really hope the young folk get something specifically for them. At the same time, I also don't quite get it... If the kids are causing trouble and violence then there's an entirely different social problem that no facility will fix. Etana Emissary Regardless of if there anything to do or not ... it doesn't give them the right to cause trouble and abuse people who walk past. Karina Tasker
Not sure how a council can be blamed for someone's boredom? Too bored to do nothing but too lazy to do anything? Lisa Wakelin Should have built the damn skatepark they were talking about years ago when I was younger, that would have given a huge majority something to keep themselves busy rather than picking up ciggy butt's outside the library. David Flynn I don’t understand that there are all sorts of youth skateparks, hangouts now. These were never available in “our day” and we all didn’t get bored and cause trouble. Jo Wilson Take the time to talk to the kids, listen to their story, find out what’s going on in their lives, what do they want? I can put money on that they don’t want to be hanging round the streets. Take time out of your privileged lifestyle to understand why, what , who and where . Then
Nelson Matters Simon Bridges' election as National’s 12 leader marks an important new chapter for New Zealand’s largest and most successful political party. Simon comes from humble beginnings as the youngest child of six children of a Baptist minister father and school teacher mother. He grew up in Te Atatu. He was head boy at Rutherford College and went on to complete an arts and law degree at Auckland University and a further law degree at Oxford University in England. I have huge respect for Simon’s work as a crown prosecutor for seven years in Tauranga on jury
trials. The new Government is proposing a weakening of bail and sentencing laws and his real life experiences will ensure victims are not forgotten in these debates. Simon has a strong track record as a successful minister of energy and resources, communications, transport, and economic development. He is bright, has business nous but also a strong social conscience. Smart initiatives he lead include the rollout out of ultra-fast broadband, National’s massive home insulation programme covering over 300,000 homes, and financial incentives for electric vehicles.
Simon has proved to be a strong advocate for provincial New Zealand as MP for Tauranga. Nelson is a very similar city. Our regions are dynamic and growing with successful sectors like horticulture, forestry and tourism. We are not depressed cities in the way Winston Peters likes to characterise provincial New Zealand. Our issues are managing growth and ensuring we improve the transport, housing, schools and health services to cope. Simon was a strong supporter and deliverer of infrastructure investment. He was pivotal to National’s commitment for

This is crazy, kids are the way they are because they have no respect and think they can get away with anything because they can, the solution lies with the law and with parents, not a skate park. We never caused trouble as kids because we were "bored" we would simply ride our bikes or make our way to Saxton Field or the Railway Reserve, a skatepark is a cool idea and I think would be a great addition to Stoke area but don't expect it to solve the issues with troublemakers because it won't. Kids are still going to hang outside the library causing trouble, and it's not because they are bored it's because they can and they want to an think it's "cool". You are delusional if you think otherwise.. Bring a skatepark to the kids that deserve it as a positive addition to Stoke. Caitlin Ferris

He had the leadership to get major roading projects in Tauranga, Wellington, Christchurch and Auckland built, despite noisy opposition. He gets stuff done. This contrasts with Jacinda Ardern’s position of putting Nelson’s traffic problems in the too hard basket and doing nothing. Simon, like Jacinda Ardern, faces the challenge of a young family with children aged 5 and 3 and a new baby in December. Simon Bridges' election as National Leader alongside Jacinda Ardern for Labour marks a generational change in our country’s leadership. It bodes well for New Zealand’s future that we have this sort of talent to take our country forward. Advt.

Eight men on eight scooters are heading to the region to raise awareness for mental health. Mental health educator Mike King and his team of seven experts are riding into the region on their 50cc Suzuki scooters, as part of a four-week, nation-wide campaign, with one simple message – hope. One of New Zealand’s most iconic personalities, Mike has been very open about his own struggles with mental illness and hopes that by talking to people,
it will open the door of conversation for those who need it. Mike says it’s about shedding the stigma associated with youth suicide. The team will be travelling over 4000 kilometres, from Cape Reinga to Bluff, to visit around 50 towns and talk to more than 20,000 school kids and adults with his ‘I AM HOPE’ tour. Working with mental health professionals, service providers and business leaders, the tour aims to empower communities to connect with their youth who are struggling. Next week, Mike will be speaking to
students at Murchison Area School and Broadgreen Intermediate. On Wednesday, March 14, Mike will be delivering a community korero at the Victory Community Centre at 7pm. This is a free public talk and is suitable for all ages. The I AM HOPE concept is simple – it is a commitment that we can all make to be open and to listen to anyone who needs to talk Need to talk? Organiser Gisela Purcell says the event aimed to raise awareness and understanding of what fair trade is and the wide variety of options available to locals every day. “We can really make a difference here in Nelson and it’s so easy to do. “If people go to the supermarket and choose fair trade bananas then that’s great, you don’t have to go exclusively fair trade, it’s the little steps that count,” she says Fresh Choice owner Mark A’Court was the major sponsor of the event and says that fair trade produce is an important part of their business so he wanted to support the local community and get the profile

Last drinks for Founders brewery Charles Anderson Editor
charles@nelsonweekly.co.nz
When John Duncan first eyed the spot at Founders Heritage Park there was nothing there but bare grass. Twenty years on he has built a fully functioning, award-winning brewery that has built on the legacy of six generations and 160 years of beer brewing in his family. “I sort of feel I have done what I set out to achieve,” John says. “It was always the dream to own our own brewery and we have done that.” But now that brewery, formally known as Founders, now as Park Life, is on the market. “It’s not what I had planned. I reached retirement age, but my wife hasn’t been well so that tipped the scales.” He says after all that time working seven days a week it is time to take stock. “It has been great. We have employed all our kids over the years and had hundreds of staff who have all become family. It’s certainly been a family business and family comes first.” The brewery has twice won the best small brewery in the world, along with a slew of other titles. They exported beer to Australia, South Korea, Hong Kong, Japan, Denmark, Germany – and were

I want to let somebody else have a go.” John is selling the building, the brewery and café along with everything in it, but not the business itself. The land is leased from Nelson City Council. He says that the industry has

changed in many ways since he first set up his own brand, after years working in wine and then as a brewer for Macs.
However, he also sees history repeating itself. Between 1840 and the early 1900s Nelson had about 30 breweries. Then it went to having one and now there are about 14 different breweries operating in the region. “So that’s encouraging.” He has also managed to pass on the family trade. His son Callum is a brewer for Spring & Fern. “We are a family of brewers. Every generation we have had one. It’s a long history.”
John says they have had huge support from locals – even from the first days, when they encouraged people to bring their own food, to hosting everything from weddings, christenings, funerals and hens’ nights. They sold the Founders brand to Independent Liquor and rebranded to Park Life – just selling their own beer on site. “It’s become a focal point for the park and a destination,” John says. “It’s a very unique setting and has really set the tone for the entire place. The brewery is surrounded by heritage buildings, a playground and a Bristol Freighter airplane. “There’s an opportunity for somebody to come in and create their own brand, a new look or carrying on as is.” John’s recipes are also open for negotiation. His retirement project is to write the family history, which spans the entire history of Nelson, and fix the roof at the family bach at Lake Rotoiti. "All those things that have been on the backburner," he says. “It’s bittersweet for me, I’ve had to make some tough decisions. But it would be nice to see this place go to a good home. I’ll miss it.” For more information contact Debbie Cade at Colliers on (03) 5456920.

Judges buoyed by classic boats at Rotoiti An immaculate wooden clinker runabout built by Jim Beattie and restored in 2010 won the overall award at this year’s NZ Antique & Classic Boat Show held at Lake Rotoiti over the weekend. ‘Beattieful’ is named for the original builder, and is owned by Graeme Dutch of Porirua who says it was used in the Pelorus Sound from 1961-2002, Kaiapoi from 2002-07, and is currently homed in Picton. The 16-foot boat is powered by a 55 Hp Evinrude outboard. She is a veteran of the Nelson boat show and won the Mathieson-Jeffcott trophy for the Best Motor Powered Craft in 2010. This year it won the Jens Hansen Cup for the Best Vessel Overall. Judges spokesman Ben Cox said Beattieful stood out for authenticity. “The attention to detail, the standard of the finish and touches like the deck hatch and little table in the cockpit really impressed us.” Cox said the overall standard at the show was very high, representing a love of boats “from the backyard builder to wealthy enthusiasts with impeccable, imported boats”. There were 110 entries in this year’s
event and several hundred people attended the boat show over two days. Other award winning boats were: Best New Craft: Phantom II, Malcolm & Merridee Jeffrey, Helensville Best Restoration: Elray III, Pete Rainey & Glenn Common, Nelson Port Nelson House Parts Best Rowed Craft: Toroa, Russell Maxwell, Stoke CWF Hamilton Trophy for the Best Jet Propelled Craft: (no name), Nelson Lipinski, West Melton Johnson Family Trophy for the Best Sail Powered Craft: Solitude, Mike Hadfield, Nelson Mathieson/Jeffcott Trophy for the Best Motor Powered Craft: Jueena, Mike McMillan, Nelson Best Outboard Motor Boat: Luna, Philip & Gwen Mladenov, Mapua Eventiac Award for the Best Themed Display, and the People’s Choice Award: Solo, Keith Henson, Picton Ron Culley Trophy for the Best Steam Boat: India, Rick Osborne, Renwick

Kiwi kid solves puzzles on the run Sara Hollyman Thirteen-year-old Lennox Crowe decided that the Weetbix Kids TRYathlon at Tahunanui wasn’t quite hard enough for him. So, as well as completing the swim, cycle and run parts of the race, he also took it a step further by solving two Rubix Cubes on the final sprint to the finish line. “I really like being nerdy but I also like sports as
welI, so I thought this would be a fun way to combine the two.” Lennox was one of nearly 2000 young people who participated in the event on Sunday. As the Marlborough Boys’ College pupil ran past the Witherlea School Tent, 150m from the finish line, he was handed two unsolved Rubix Cubes. In the next 60 seconds he had crossed the finish line with them both completely solved.
Lennox solved one Rubix Cube during the event last year. This time he doubled the challenge. He says he loves logic puzzles and in two days he learnt how to solve a Rubix in between 25 and 30 seconds from watching YouTube videos. He is planning to be back again next year but is not sure if he will attempt to solve three cubes or maybe do something else.

The first Chinese settler in Nelson, locally named Appo Hocton, jumped ship in 1842 aided by Thomas Renwick, the ship’s doctor who employed him as his housekeeper. Well-accepted within the community, he estab-
lished a cartage business, became naturalized and began to purchase and develop land, all by 1852. In 1856 he married his neighbour’s widow, who died the same year leaving a son. He soon remarried raising four more children.

APRIL 27 - MAY 6 2018 * 42 SHOWS * 16 WORKSHOPS * 2 VENUES * WWW.NELSONFRINGE.CO.NZ The Nelson Fringe Festival is the Top of the South’s quirkiest and only fringe festival! It is a ten day celebration of fringy theatre awesomeness - with workshops taught during the day and performances by night. The Nelson Fringe has a life of its own, and is growing before our very eyes. The Nelson Fringe Festival rocks Nelson and it’s the only place you want to be in April and May. Get on into it! Hop into the Refinery ArtSpace and Ghost Light Theatre!
Kia Ora! This our 4th year of the Nelson Fringe! What I love about our beautiful festival and community is our inclusivity and our bravery to step into the unknown. We have seen expansion in the number of artists’ submissions and in audiences who are curious about original works, emerging artists and theatre that is not “run-of-the-mill”. This is an exciting time to be in the arts in our region and I’m proud that artists from around NZ and the world keep returning and telling other talented creators to come to Nelson to experience this 10 days of madness, love and creation. So here is my challenge to you this year: Go out on a limb and choose a show you wouldn’t normally go to. Don’t be safe. Pick something from our programme that might challenge you, scare you, empower you, delight you or make you feel alive. As Shakespeare wrote... “Boldness, be my friend.” What do you have to lose? Laura Irish Artistic Director, N.F.F
Haere mai ki te Nelson Fringe Festival 2018! There are so many memories attached to this festival now, it’s hard to believe we are only at the fourth one! In the lead up to this year’s festival, the Nelson Fringe Arts Charitable Trust consolidated itself as a more robust and focussed governing body, and we could not have done this without the help of Judene Edgar, our recently departed treasurer, who gave us a huge amount of resources and knowledge on governance. Thank you Judene. To our huge relief, major grants were obtained for this year’s festival from Creative New Zealand and the Rata Foundation, for which we are truly grateful. We still seek more help from smaller grants and sponsors, so if you are in a position to help and keen to see the continuation of the Fringe, please contact us. Being a theatre artist isn’t a straightforward job. Periods of productivity are often followed by self-doubt, lethargy, or the compelling distraction of working a ‘real job.’ I’m proud that our little town sports a motivational platform to create and promote theatre art, and this year I’m walking the talk with a new solo play, which I should get on with writing. See you at the shows! Dan Allan Chairperson, N.F.A.C.T

Bayview Heights Full Home Renovation This substantial two – storey home overlooking the bay in Kaiteriteri in the Abel Tasman was sold to a couple who loved the location and it’s million-dollar views over the Tasman Sea. The new owners made plans to bring the property up to date, make the most of the sea views and change the layout to better suit their lifestyle. Working with Smith & Sons Nelson, the renovation plans included changing the bedroom and bathroom layout downstairs whist adding a fourth bedroom, a complete re-clad of the exterior, a new
balcony with glass balustrades and an outdoor fireplace, a new kitchen with a two-sided fireplace and new bathrooms. When work started one of the first tasks was to remove the exterior cladding and the existing decks. As with any major renovation, there were challenges to overcome and in this case those were mostly around the structural integrity of the house. Once the demolition work had been completed it was discovered that the existing walls weren’t straight, and the house was up to 30mm out of alignment in some areas. A retaining wall
was also missing from the original house so a new one had to be constructed and then installed by jacking up the roof and the walls were straightened from top to bottom. The recladding was also an extensive task which has created one of the best features of the house with a the blend of cedar, Titan board and Laminex. The project took 13 months from the time that the building consent was issued but was worth the wait as the owners are delighted with their newly renovated home overlooking the bay.

Shot Bro returns with a youth focus Charles Anderson A show that deals with depression and suicide is being brought back to Nelson to help spark a conversation with young people in the region. Highly-acclaimed actor and playwright Rob Mokaraka, will perform his one-man show ‘Shot Bro, Confessions of a Depressed Bullet’ at NMIT and the St Barna-
bas Hall from the 21-24 of March. It has been described as a “black comedy about a very real fight with depression” which is inspired by true events. Mokaraka had undiagnosed depression and in 2009 he approached armed police with a meat cleaver in an attempted suicide in Auckland. The play is the product of
his seven-year journey of healing and self-discovery, in a bid to reach others and to recognise depression as a common problem that can be relieved. Nelson city councillor Gaile Noonan and Victory Boxing’s Paul Hampton brought Rob’s show to Nelson last year. Now they have support from Nelson Rotary to bring it back, saying this time they would get more young peo-
ple attending. “It’s really about starting that conversation and there are so many aspects of it that young people would find helpful,” Gaile says. Shot Bro is on at the Johnny Cash Room at NMIT on March 21, 22 at 6pm and St Barnabas Hall in Stoke on March 24 and 25 from 4pm. Entry is koha. Email paul@ victoryboxing.org.nz for more information.

This week the Nayland College performing arts centre will be transformed into the attic of a 14-year-old girl who hid with her family for two years in Nazi-occupied Netherlands. Mia Faulkner and her 11 other cast mates have been rehearsing for their production of The Diary of Anne Frank since the end of the holidays. “It’s been really interesting in that the whole script is taken straight from her diary,” Mia, who plays Anne, says. “You see her growing up through it.” The play has been adapted by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett who used Anne Frank’s diary of her days in seclusion in Nazi occupied Germany as inspiration. Head of drama and director Anton Bentley says he wanted to put on a show that his students would be intrigued about.

Football chief dramatically quits Andrew Board Reporter
andrew@nelsonweekly.co.nz
The region's top football administrator is on stress leave and has dramatically resigned just weeks before the start of the 2018 season. Nelson Bays Football general manager Clive Beaumont has been with the sport's governing body for more than ten years. He told Nelson Weekly that he has been ordered to take three weeks off work on stress leave by a doctor and that resigning wasn't a step he has "taken lightly". "I haven't got another job, it's a
principled decision. "I've got to look after myself, I do feel as though I'm letting some people down but I'm not prepared to work in the current environment." Beaumont would not elaborate further but Nelson Bays Football confirmed Beaumont's role was to be split, with an operations manager for Tasman United to be employed and a general manager to run the amateur game in the region. Reflecting on his ten years at NBF, Clive says highlights are the growth in player numbers, financial stability of the code, national league football coming back to
Nelson, the growth of the Jack McKnight tournament and hosting national secondary school tournaments. "The sport is in Clive a much better Beaumont. place in many levels. I was privileged to be paid to work in a sport that was my passion as well. "Also, thanks to the football community for their support over ten years. A lot of good people are doing a lot of good things in this sport."
Gita forces change of track for running race Andrew Board Cyclone Gita has forced a lastminute re-route of the famous Kaiteriteri Gold Half Marathon this Saturday. Damage caused by ex-cyclone Gita temporarily placed the Sandy Bay Hill Road ‘out of bounds’, meaning organisers have had to change the run/walk half marathon route. It now is ‘out and back’ from Kaiteriteri to Marahau with an initial Martins Farm Road circuit to make up the 21.1km distance. Most will welcome the revised course, as ascending Sandy Bay Hill was a mission but certainly one of the highlights, or challenges, over the last 27 years, says Averil West of Nelson Events. "Nothing stays the same and after
Nelson Bays Football chairman Matt Watson said in a statement that football has undergone "significant change" over the past two years. "Our District Executive has recently worked through a robust structural change to enable the development of all football pathways within the region, including community-based football and Tasman United teams. "While Clive Beaumont initially agreed to continue in the role of General Manager – Nelson Bays Football, he has since taken the decision to resign. On behalf of Nelson Bays Football and the District Executive, we thank
Clive for his efforts over the years and wish him all the best with his future endeavours." Mark Sheehan, chair of the Tasman United board, which governs the region's national league team, said he was disappointed to see Clive go but the new role created with Tasman United would help grow the organisation. "Without Clive there wouldn't be a Tasman United and he's done a wonderful job. On the back of that work we're in a position to recruit a full-time operations manager for Tasman United, which will be a positive step." The senior football season is due to start in four weeks.

Super Saloon driver Ian Burson did more laps in his brand-new work ute packing the track than he did in his race car last Friday night. Damp morning weather left the track soaked, but after several hours of track packing the Vertex Super Cup got underway slightly late. Burson was leading by a narrow margin before the final two rounds were held at Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway. A 2nd and 5th had him off the front of the feature race, sadly his tyre punctured on the second lap while leading and he retired from the race. Things had to go well for the final round on Saturday night to maintain his lead. He won the opening race then finished 10th in his second before playing it safe in the feature, finishing in 6th spot to claim the Vertex Super Cup Series once again
Shane Harwood’s (18N) return to racing netted him the South Island Super Stock Title with plenty of help from his club mates. Photo: Tom Laney/Imagepress. after seven meetings held around the South Island. Shane Harwood’s retirement didn’t last a year, with a return to the track for the Fifeshire Forklifts South Island Super Stock title. The former NZ champion still has plenty of friends on the track and he needed many of them as they put pay to the North Island and Christchurch competitors to keep the title in Nelson. The final heat was one of the more brutal races in recent history with several drivers in contention for the title.

There were plenty of broken cars at the end of the race as the Nelson drivers teamed up to take out the visitors, former NZ champions Asher Rees and Malcolm Ngatai were vying to win, along with the return of Thomas Stanaway who now resides in Hawkes Bay. The Nelson Marlborough Waste Youth Ministock Mania had cars travel all the way from Cromwell and Dunedin, but it was Caleb Jessop in his borrowed 88N machine who took overall honours. Brayden Skurr was in 2nd
with Cameron Thompson 3rd, the junior section was won by Troy Cleveland from Blenheim, with Riley Eathorne 2nd and Maiah Bishop 3rd. The closed club stock car title was defended by Brad Neiman, possibly for the last time as he looks at stepping up a grade next season. New clubrooms a goal for football club Andrew Board The region’s biggest sporting club is preparing for the up-coming football season with several operational changes but its eyes still on the big prize – new clubrooms. FC Nelson has more than 700 members, making it the biggest ball-sport club north of Christchurch. Around 450 of those members are juniors and president George Molnar says that’s a big focus of the club this season. “We’ve gone through a process of having some people leave and some change their roles. We’ve got some new people in place, including a youth and junior coordinator.” He says the club will operate without a director of football and will be more volunteer-based this season. “The committee is very much a working committee, and creating a pathway for our young players and educating coaches is a strong
focus for us.” On the senior side of the club, FC Nelson will enter six, possibly seven, mens teams this season and the club has employed a coach for its senior womens team in an effort to grow that side of the club. “There is a bit of rebuilding that needs to happen in the womens space. But we’re still hopful we’ll have a first and second division team this season.” Alongside players, George says a big goal of the club is to have its own clubrooms and it's been working with Nelson City Council to try and build some clubrooms at Guppy Park. “The committee is really working hard talking to the council about Neale Park. We do feel like second-class citizens at times so we’re working with the council to try and improve the facilities in Nelson.” He termed it a “short-to-mid term goal” of the club.

The club’s largest kingfish of the season so far, measuring 130cm, estimated weight between 25 and 30 kg.
Why longer is better Chris Jobe March sea temperatures are now starting to reduce, which means more fish should be on the bite this month, feeding up before the cold of winter descends on us. Last March was one of the busiest months for club members to catch snapper and this month shouldn’t be any different. The Dawnbreakers Club encourages its members to photo their catch on an approved measuring board along with their club card so the fish can be accurately entered into our monthly competition. Points are awarded on a per cm basis, and a multiplier is used for each different fish. For example kingfish are one of the larger species to catch so its multiplier is 1 point per centimetre. A 130cm kingfish will give 130 points to the member who enters the fish. Snapper have a point multiplier of 1.50
so an 80cm snapper will give the angler 120 points. Each month you can catch as many fish as you like, however only the longest of each species counts towards points for the monthly competition. The weigh master looks after the points and calculates out top fish for each month, and they accumulate towards end of season total points for trophies and prizes. We have run double points promotions for some months this season and it has really boosted the points of those who catch and enter them. Gurnard have been the double point fish during February and some nice points were gained by those who caught them. Our next promotion will be in April for the Kahawai. Our club has trips away to Okiwi Bay and Durville Island coming up soon, so log onto www. dawnbreakers.co.nz for more information.

Nelson beat Marlborough to retain cricket shield Peter Jones Cricket’s Newman Shield, symbol of one-day supremacy between Marlborough and Nelson, remains in Nelson hands. Marlborough travelled to Saxton Oval on Sunday intent on wresting the trophy from their arch-rivals, but came up well short, losing by 72 runs. Once again, batting was the visiting side’s problem, that and an inability to break a decisive 88-run eighth wicket partnership between Nelson lower order batsmen Felix Murray (58 not out) and man-of-thematch Thomas Zohrab (43) as they ended their 50-overs at 216-8. Marlborough’s bowlers had early ascendancy, reducing Nelson to 122-7 before youngsters Murray and Zohrab turned the tables. McCormick and Josh Poole picked up a brace of wickets apiece as four of Nelson’s top order batsmen struggled to

and Nic Clark all scored 22 while Devon Serrurier managed 23. In reply, Marlborough lost Josh Poole and Probodha Arthavidu cheaply before the in-form Ma’ara Ave joined Jerrym Lamb in a 56-run third wicket partnership. However, when Ave fell for a well-composed 43 the wickets began to tumble. Lamb was bowled by Zohrab for 40, then the only further resistance was shown by skipper Matthew Stretch with 21 as Marlborough’s innings ended at 144 in the 40th over. Marlborough’s cause was not helped by two run outs. Seam bowler Zohrab capped off a memorable match with the outstanding figures of 5-13, while Ludick, Josh Clarkson and Evan Jones picked up a wicket each. Nelson will next defend the Newman Shield at Horton Park, Blenheim early next season.
