We just have to rely on common sense and that people are going to drop off useful items.” Kenneth says they would like to thank those who do drop off “the good stuff ”. He says that the Salvation Army is always willing to do pickups of quality discards if people called them. “We just want to encourage people to drop things off during store hours, because even the good quality things can get stolen or are unusable if they get rained on. We really are grateful for all the donations we get. It’s just a matter of discouraging people from dumping their rubbish.” Until then, they think that the Nelson City Council might have a role to play in the matter.

Hospice confident it can plug funding gap Kate Russell Reporter

Nelson Tasman Hospice is confident it will be able to plug a $142,000 hole in its new building, even though Nelson City Council turned down their plea for help. At a council meeting last Tuesday, hospice put in a request for them to waive a development levy on their new $14 million building on Suffolk Rd in Stoke. But their request was denied because it was “outside council policy” and it could set a precedent. There are exemptions listed on the policy, such as kindergartens, playcentres, some social housing developments and public hospitals – but not a hospice. “We would be undermining the policy, but the greater issue is that it is not the appropriate pot [of funding] to be recognising the benefits the hospice provides the community,” said Lisa Gibellini, a council senior planning advisor. She instead encouraged hospice to seek funding by making a submission to both the
Nelson City Council and Tasman District Council Long Term Plans. The Nelson Tasman Hospice is a nonNelson Tasprofit charitaman Hospice ble trust that CEO Frans has provided Dellebeke. end-of-life care for those with terminal illness for more than 30 years. The service is free of charge. But, due to expansion of the neighbouring Manuka Street Hospital, it has been forced to relocate. Hospice chief executive Frans Dellebeke says he is optimistic the hospice will be able to source the $142,000 through the long term plans - but if not, they will have to rely on more fundraising. “We’ve got 160 patients on our books at any given time, and approximately 37 per cent of Nelsonians are touched by our service. “It did seem clear that councillors were happy to fund it – but it was just a matter of all their rules and regulations,” he says. At the meeting, Frans was also

asked why they didn’t charge patients - to which he replied that “it may be something that we might have to look at going forward”. Speaking to Nelson Weekly yesterday, Frans said the comment came “out of the blue”. “It was a question that was asked, and it could be a possibility years down the track but not in the near future. No hospice in the country charges it’s patients and both the district health board and government have alluded that won’t happen.” Frans says they have managed to put $9.5 million of their own money into the build, but they still need $2 million from the public, with the other $2.5 million coming from grants and other fundraising events. “There is absolutely no government funding for a new building of this type. We get limited funding and we have to raise more than $1 million every year just to cover our operational costs,” he says. “It’s not a small set-up – it’s a costly set-up.” Construction of the new hospice started last year and is expected to be finished by the end of this year.

Down and dirty at Muddy Buddy

It was a dirty business at Tasman School on Sunday as competitors squelched their way through the annual Muddy Buddy race. The event saw dozens of people from around the region run, crawl and slip through an obstacle
course of mud – all in service of raising funds for Tasman School. Board of Trustees member Kylie Rush’s family has been involved with Tasman School for 100 years and says the event was a fantastic event and her whole family participated. “All three of my kids competed
this year. My youngest Sophie, who’s 7, ran a lap for the first time. She loved it and said she’s definitely doing two laps next year.” Kylie says the fun run is an important event for the school as it’s the main fundraiser for the year. “This year we are looking

to get across the line to get our swimming pool put in. It’s going to be for the whole community to use, so not just a ‘school pool’.” This year the school aimed to mix it up a bit for the participants who enter every year. “This year we added a slide out in the mud flats and the tyre obstacles near
the finish line. We’ve got to keep it fun and different.” Levi Davis, 6, ran the muddy buddy for the second time and did two laps, which is around 4 kms of mud running. “I got very dirty, the mud’s all in my hair. The best bit was when we ran on top of the tyres.”

Stoke Centre’s $1 million ‘lesson’ Kate Russell Reporter

Three years ago Nelson City Council approved a budget to build what would be an impressive civic building for Stoke. It was due to open at the end of last year and would be fit for purpose and a source of pride. But three years on, the Greenmeadows Centre is still under construction and last week council were handed a report from its staff – it was going to cost $1 million more than originally budgeted. So what went wrong? Since the project was green-lighted, it has been hampered by various budget blowouts and numerous delays. Last Tuesday, staff told council that an unbudgeted $590,000 was needed to complete the project. This means the Greenmeadows construction has not only eaten through all its funding - but also its entire allotted contingency fund. What was once a $6.14 million project is now a $7.19 million lesson. Concept plans were first approved in 2015 with an earmarked budget of $5.6 million.
Stoke sports and community groups were excited about their new home, while others questioned both the site and the cost. The budget was then locked in at $6.14 million to allow for extra features, including bi-fold doors and a solar power generator. Detailed designs were completed and tenders closed in June 2016. In the process, an extra $350,000 was approved to allow the contract to be awarded to an out-oftown construction company so to “not reduce the scope of the project”. Work onsite kicked off at the end of 2016. It was supposed to start in March 2016. In September 2017, council approved an additional $39,000 for an emergency electrical generator and another $75,000 for changes to the kitchen. These extended the completion date to February 2018 – instead of the anticipated end of 2017. Now, it’s June 2018 – although work on the changing rooms has been advanced for the upcoming rugby season. Other reasons for construction delays include the late delivery of structural steelwork, a shortage of experienced construction staff and asbestos. Mayor Rachel Reese expressed

her disappointment that the additional funding request came so late in the project. “We understand that projects can be affected by various challenges, but to see a nine per cent increase in cost is concerning - especially as we have been closely watching progress and no budgetary concerns or risks were raised throughout 2017. “This is one of the challenges for projects like this is that they are community projects, this isn’t like a commercial job where we put-
ting it to the market. This building is being built for people who rely on these facilities.” In his report to council, manager capital project Shane Davies said that staff have learnt a number of “key lessons” from the project. These include: allowing more ‘realistic contingencies’ on complex projects, the need to undertake more comprehensive asbestos testing, to have all leases signed before work commences, ensuring elected members are kept informed, the need to better understand the entire scope of complex projects and acknowledging local contractors in all future tenders. Users of the centre were given a hard-hat look at building progress last month, including Stoke Rugby Club and Stoke Seniors. Stoke Rugby Club operations
manager Kim Biggs says she’s “not surprised” with the delays and cost overruns, but is pleased that the changing sheds will be advanced. “It’s going to be a fantastic facility – it’s just a bit disappointing that it’s taking so long.” Lyndon Penketh, chairman of Stoke Seniors says they aren’t concerned about the delays and “don’t want to be involved with any comment on the cost”. “We’re not under any pressure to move. We have our own hall that we can keep using, so we can live with it. We’re quite positive about the centre. We’ve been with it from the start. We’re getting on really well with council – so it’s a win/win.” Despite learning some valuable lessons, Rachel says it’s now essential for staff and contractors to ensure a “high-quality civic building is completed that meets the needs of users for many years to come”. “All the groups wanting to use the facility have their leases in place, and will be eager to get into the building as soon as possible.” She says staff are confident that it will be completed by the end of June. “But we don’t want to be opening a building with the landscaping not done.”

A barber and a registered nurse are teaming up to encourage men to seek health advice before it’s too late. For some time, Shawn Stormann, a barber, and his husband Carter, a registered nurse, have been talking about opening a dedicated health clinic out of barbershop Stormy’s Mancave. But it was the death of a friend, Bronson Ulu, from suicide, that pushed the pair to ensure the vision happens. “It was just a kick in the guts,” says Carter. “Bronson was well loved – he was generous with his time and always asked about you. It threw us all. This has given us a real sense of urgency.” The pair say that Bronson’s death strengthened their resolve to make a real go of “Caveman Health”. The clinic will operate as a charitable trust out of Stormy’s Mancave, which is set to move close to nearby Penguino’s on May 1. Carter says there is a pressing need for somewhere accessible to allow men to feel comfortable in discussing their health. “As a nurse, I am obligated to think about those who are most

Men, simply by being men, have a health disparity in New Zealand. men. Carter says, in the United States, there has been a recent
study that used barbershops as a vehicle for health promotion and it resulted in an average drop in blood pressure across clientele. “Barbershops are one of the spaces where the guys feel safe and have been trusting barbers to take care of their image for a long time, so it’s a place where they tend to open up,” Shawn says. Carter hopes Caveman Health
will be a place for all kinds of accessible services and also help men to get further care if they need it – including helping pay for GP appointments. “No one should have to forego a doctor’s appointment because they can’t afford it.” He is looking for clinical partnerships to allow him to bring in people for those in need of a higher level help. “We hope we will get more men enrolled and more men understanding their health and what to do about it. I’m hearing really positive feedback, so I’m optimistic.” Shawn says the idea is focussed on helping guys take the first step in their health – whether it be physiological, physical, cardiovascular or sexual. “We want to make sure they don’t fall through the gaps and get the right support.” Carter says that Bronson’s death drove home how personal the project is and how passionate he is about making it a reality. “We are men, we have lost people close to us. What should the future of Nelson look like? Charles Anderson The Nelson City Council wants your help to shape what sort of city we should be aspiring to be. The Long Term Plan deals with all council spending over the next 10 years. In the next year council is due to earn $113 million and spend $125 million as part of its overall holdings of $1.3 billion. It’s a big ask – which is why the public needs to make submissions. “Why should you care about it? Because ratepayers of Nelson are one of the primary funders of the work that goes in their city,” Mayor Rachel Reese says. “They need to know the money they are paying is being wisely used.” She says that the plan is a balance between ensuring that there are the right sort of projects without overspending. The key areas are 1) infrastructure, 2) the environment, 3) CBD development and 4) lifting council performance. Rachel says the spending on these projects will help develop Nelson into what is being called “a smart little city”. “This is the three years where we need to think like a city, we need to tell our story that attracts people who say 'I’ve had enough of the congestion or house prices in Auckland and I want to have a go doing something innovative and creative in another city'. “The future of this region is to make sure we are a key city in New Zealand.” She says there are big projects on the cards – including investing $338 million in transport, water supply, wastewater, solid waste, stormwater and flood protection projects over the next 10 years. But this work could also be spread over 20 years. Rachel says dealing with the effects of climate change is a key priority – as brought to the fore with the recent weather events. There are many other areas council wants feedback on including a $15million redevelopment of Elma Turner Library, whether to spend $250,000 on Natureland each year, whether it should build a youth park in Stoke, spending an extra $1.3 million on new council staff, and the Southern Link investigation. The plan also proposes an increase in rates over the next three years - 3.2 per cent in year one, 3.9 per cent and 3.6 per cent in years two and three respectively. Easter bunny hiding in digital shops Time for a bunny hunt – a virtual one, that is. Uniquely Nelson is asking residents to have a go at finding “Whomper” - a bunny that is hidden in Nelson’s virtual shops on its website. “We thought it would be good to do something different using the technology we have,” says Uniquely Nelson’s manager Simon Duffy. The promotion body recently relaunched its website with virtual tours of shops around Nelson. Si-

Sun shines on 11th annual MarchFest Jonty Dine The eleventh edition of MarchFest was celebrated in New Zealand’s hop epicentre on Saturday with about 4000 people descending on Founders Park for the full-flavoured festival. Event organiser Mic Dover says it was the biggest one yet. "Ticket sales are up on late year, we had more bands than ever before and more beers than ever before.” He said, despite the recent weather that hammered the region, the beer buffs were always going to attend rain or shine. "Rain only marginally affects our numbers because we sold so many pre-sale tickets, so people are committed to coming regardless of the weather.” Unlike ordinary beer festivals, all the beers available at MarchFest were specially commissioned for the event and had never previously been tasted by the public. A few drops on offer included Celery Salt Hippy, Mr Giblin, Fallen Empire, Thug Juice, The

Regional rivalries were born with 10 North Island breweries invited to the festival for the first time. "There was a north vs south flavour to the festival this year with Auckland invited as the guest region, so we laid down the challenge to local brewers to come up with as good as or better beer than what comes from up north,” Mic says. But MarchFest was not just about beer, with Kiwi soul singer Hollie Smith perform-
ing an hour set to close the event. Wellington couple Chloe Barnes and Jordan Spender attending their second MarchFest say they have added craft beer festival to their annual events calendar. “It’s such a good day out and everyone is on a really good vibe,” Chloe said. “It’s just bloody nice beer.” Master brewer Annie Johnstone from Seattle, Washington was also personally invited to attend MarchFest.

NEWS Nelson least confident: The economic confidence of the top of the South Island has dropped 33 per cent from last year, making it the second least optimistic region in the country. Only 13 per cent of households in Nelson, Marlborough and the West Coast are optimistic about the economic outlook for their regions over the coming year, according to the WestpacMcDermott Miller Regional Economic Confidence survey for the March 2018 quarter. “The sharp drop in regional confidence in this quarter is likely to be due to the impact of a series of extreme storm events, which caused widespread disruption and damage across the region, including roads and bridges being washed out and damage

to horticultural and forestry businesses,” said Westpac Chief Economist Dominick Stephens. “Falling house prices in Marlborough and the West Coast, and sharply lower house sales volumes across the region are also likely to have affected the mood.” Modelling for good causes: It took nine hours of set-up to get the layouts at the 8th biennial Nelson Model Railway Exhibition ready for the public eye. The exhibition ran across the weekend at the Stoke Hall and featured some 17 different layouts ranging in size from around the country. Organiser Ian McEwan says it’s about bringing like-minded people together for others to enjoy. All left-over funds went towards the Fifeshire Foundation, Nelson Railway Society and the Society of Modellers.

Soroptimists need more members Locally Owned and Operated

For 54 years, a dedicated group of women from Nelson have been helping to transform the lives of others – but they need more members to keep up their good work. Soroptimists International Nelson aim to empower, educate and enable local women and girls. They currently have 20 members, but with a steadily declining membership over the last 18 months, they are looking to boost
their numbers. “If we doubled our membership, that would be great,” says Carol Golding, the group’s newly-sworn-in president. “Some members have been with us for nearly 40 years, but we need to keep up the momentum.” They have been involved in a raft of projects around Nelson, including helping to establish the Young Parents’ School at Auckland Point School in 2013. “We still tend to their gardens, cook food for the babies and
donate resources,” Carol says. They also help fund a $10,000 annual scholarship for the Cawthron Institute to help get women into education, as well as a successful kindergarten dental programme and the warmer homes project, which helps families with firewood, warm clothing and bedding. They also raise funds to educate women in Nepal and have helped to build sanctuaries in Fiji for women in violence. Last year alone they raised
$17,000, with the majority of funds coming through catering, a ‘post-budget’ breakfast, making 250 Christmas puddings every year to sell and the odd Mitre 10 sausage sizzle. They also maintain and organise the graduate gowns at NMIT as a way to boost funds. Secretary Steph Smith says they have the view that “if you have strong women and girls, you have strong families”. “We’re out helping those in need, and you get so much satisfaction

Council double standards Nelson City Council can find $2.5 million for the Natureland Zoo and Brook Sanctuary, but when asked to forgo the development fees for the new Nelson Tasman Hospice building, the hospice got told to get stuffed. Hospice was not asking for a handout from ratepayers like the School of Music, the Suter, the Brook Sanctuary, the theatre trust and numerous other groups that will not stand on their own feet. This would not be a cost to the ratepayer but a service badly needed in Nelson and districts. Only Cr Tim Skinner voted to forgo the fees, the others blindly followed the mayor. Dan McGuire Bus commute has many benefits I'm in Stoke and find the bus service pretty good to the city
and Richmond. I'd like to see an hourly evening service though on weekdays say till 10pm. Also a commuter bus link with Mapua and Motueka, please. Nelson Matters President Obama’s visit to New Zealand last week, hosted by Sir John Key, has had me reflecting on how much I prefer hope over hate in politics. Sir John and Barack Obama come from opposite sides of the political fence in philosophy but have much in common in style. They project positivity and politeness. They are the sort of person you would love to have a beer with. They also both believed in a more open and cooperative world in which countries could trade together and come together on climate change.
I contrast that with some of the growing ugly politics around the world and at home. It is not just Trump’s ‘you’re fired’ style but the politics of slapping tariffs on trade and reneging on global environmental accords. I am equally repulsed by the fake elections in Russia with Putin, the chilling use of chemical weapons and the underhand interference by Russia in other countries elections. This macho, aggressive political style in New Zealand is represented by Winston Peters. I was aghast at his claim that
there was no proof that Russians were involved in the downing of MH17 that killed 298 innocent people including one New Zealander. Denying any Russian interference in the US election is like saying black is white. Mr Peters’ slow response to the use of chemical agents in the UK was unsavoury. New Zealanders know evil when they see it. We see the same sort of uncouth approach by New Zealand First Minister Shane Jones. I have no problem with MPs challenging Air New Zealand over its regional air services, but the

We see the same disregard for proper standards in the way Mr Jones is tossing out the $3 billion in the fund New Zealand First got from Labour as part of their coalition agreement. It is wrong that the first two big grants are going on a roundabout and new airport terminal just down the road from Mr Jones home, when no other region or airport had the opportunity. We also saw a grant made to people under investigation by
the Serious Forward Office. This $3 billion dollar fund equates to $2000 of tax paid by every kiwi household yet, Peters, Jones and co is treating it like it is personal piggy bank I hope this rogue phase in global politics will pass. Rarking up a fear of foreigners only makes the world poorer and more dangerous. I also hope people will tire of bluster and bullying. We need to take a leaf out of Obama’s and Sir John’s book and strive for those timeless values of respect, honesty, reason, and civility.

Nelson Suburbs play their first home game of the seaso the 2018 Mainland Football Premier League on Easter F against Nomads United, kick off at NOON. Suburbs hav played two away games already this season, beating FC Twenty11 4 nil and Universities 4-3. The Men’s Premier Football league involves eight teams one from Nelson and seven from Christchurch. This yea the competition will consist of two rounds with the top teams from the league joining with the top 3 teams from Football South Premier League to play a one round Sou Island League. Both Ben Wright and Steve Bignall will continue coachin team in 2018 with Cary Hamson again taking on the rol Team Manager. Ben Wright will also play in his usual ro front. In 2018 the team welcomes Northern Ireland age-grade international James McClay and Jordan Yong returns to Nelson from the UK. Eddie Sillars, originally from Auckl will play after having some game time with Tasman Uni Suburbs players returning from Tasman United will be S Ayers, Ryan Stewart and Corey Wilson while both Alex Ridsdale and Omar Guardiola will return from Southern United. thington will be towing his Midget all the way down State Highway One to meet the ferry. All classes have good fields and this weekend we will be running Sidecars, Three Quarter Midgets, Midgets, Stockcars, Superstocks, Super Saloons, Production Saloons (Saturday) and Youth Ministocks (Friday) The Sidecars have one of the biggest fields seen here in years and nearly all bikes are of top calibre, so racing will be absolutely intense. As mentioned earlier, the 1NZ bike will be trying to make its mark, but other competitors, include the 3NZ pairing of John Hannan and Bryce Rose from Whanganui as well as a multitude of bikes from Christchurch, Invercargill, Blenheim, and of course, our local riders will be doing their best to keep the silverware here in the Top of the South. This will be the class that will be hard to beat on the weekend. Another class that will entertain is the Stockcars as there are around 25 cars entered. Add into this mix the rivalries that have started over the last few meetings between a number of drivers here locally, just the pay backs alone will be worth the entry fee. Once again competitors from Blenheim, Greymouth,
Mount Maunganui, and Wellington are here to hustle and bustle their way around the track to take the honours. One thing to watch out for here are the number of female competitors who have entered in the Stockcars and, from our reckoning, it would be some sort of record for this class. Our very own Morgan Dumelow is joined by Caitlin Hayward all the way from the Bay of Plenty as well as Brittany Carpenter and Melissa Gifford from Greymouth. The Superstock class is in the middle of rebuilding its numbers this season but there is a handy field lined up to take to the Moutere clay for the Easter championship and Open club championships. The hardhitting 1NZ of William Humphries will be here once again, as will the 34P car of Rebecca Barr. Young local lad Brad Neiman has just purchased a Superstock and will contest these championships as well as competing in the Stockcars over the weekend, and there will plenty of eyes on his progress as he has been a front runner in the Stockcar class. Word around the camp fire is that a few of the local stockcar drivers are looking to move into the Superstock class which is great news for the future of Superstocks here in Nelson.

Both open wheel classes are well represented as well over Easter with the Three Quarter Midgets (TQ’s) fielding a huge 20 car field including the 1NZ of Jeremy Webb from Christchurch, who has decided to leave the Midget at home preferring to peddle the TQ. He will have his work cut out for him though with a classy 20 car field entered with drivers from Greymouth, Christchurch and Nelson. Local lass Alicia Mclauchlan has
opted to leave her Sprintcar in the shed and miss the last round of the Hydraulink War of the Wings series in Cromwell to steer her TQ around Nelson for the weekend. Let’s hope she doesn’t rue this decision when the final checkered flag falls on Saturday. Add to that a handy field of Midgets and the open wheel classes are looking for an epic weekend of racing. The usual suspects from Christchurch and Nelson fill the Midget
field with the addition of Jayden Worthington from Auckland. These guys really know how to put on a show! A small field of Super Saloons have entered for the weekend, but once again it’s a classy lineup with New Zealand Grand Prix winner Ian Burson here to race in front of his home crowd while Christchurch’s Trevor Elliot and Blenheim’s Shane McIntyre will try to keep him honest. This should be a good battle.

On the Friday night, the Youth Ministocks race for their last time for the season and for some of the kids it will be their last time in a Ministock as they come of age and move on to other classes. The class does wonders for these kids and the sport in general as more than once it’s produced our next champions. Saturday and it’s the turn of the Production Saloons to take to the track. These guys and girls have been under the watchful eye of the referees of late with a few “indiscretions,” so watch this space to see how this is going to unfold. All action, one would suspect. Plenty of Fringe treats on offer: The Nelson Fringe Festival programme has something for everyone including drama, improv, comedy, dance and a couple of stand-up comedians. With over 40 shows performing in the Nelson Fringe Festival there will be something to tantalise everyone’s tastebuds, says marketing manager Stu Dalton. “It’s hard to choose what to go and see as there’s so much on offer.” The festival has kept ticket prices low again this year to make it accessible for everyone to see something. Cricket umpire retires after 36 seasons Jonty Dine Reporter

After 36 seasons and about 900 days out in the middle, Nelson cricket umpire Errol Millar is calling an end to his marathon innings. His final match was washed out on the weekend, bringing an end to a storied career. Errol was elected a life member of the Nelson Cricket umpires and scorer’s association in 2015, is a grade five umpire (one grade below international level) and has stood in hundreds of cricket matches ranging from school boy to first class. “I’ve probably overstayed my welcome,” he jokes. Errol began his career in 1983 at 37 after moving to Nelson from Waiarapa. Wanting to remain involved in the game after an injury ended his playing time, he became an umpire. “The best place to watch a game of cricket is out in the middle.”
He recalls the most memorable innings he witnessed occurred in the late eighties by Reg Williams playing for Wanderers against Wakatu at Victory Square. “He went absolutely crazy.” Reg bludgeoned about 140 and it didn’t matter who bowled at him, they all went over the rope. “There were bowlers who just didn’t want the ball.” He says he has had the pleasure of watching some “very polished players” over the years. “I had Chris Cairns in a Shield Trophy game in Marlborough and that was an education, he was probably the tightest bowler I ever saw." Errol also stood in a match featuring the former Black Cap’s father and fellow international, Lance. “To see what he could do with the bat and ball is something I won’t forget.” It hasn’t all been glamorous times for the 71-year-old however, having been on the receiving end of some cracking straight drives from batsmen.

at about 100mph, and I wasn’t wearing a box.” Errol also had his knuckle broken last season it was the first time. "I wore one directly from the batsman. It came back so quick and all I got was my hand in front of my face and it smashed my hand. "Perhaps that was a sign that I was getting a bit old and slow.” Errol says his philosophy for umpiring is to go unnoticed. “I try not to stand out but just get out there and do the job." Unlike international umpires, Errol is not afforded the luxury of multi-angled replays to make a decision. “We only get one look, just a couple hundredths of a second to make a call.” He says the key to umpiring, like batting, is to keep your eye on the ball. “If you move your eyes slightly that could be the difference between getting a decision right or wrong.” To stand in the stifling heat or miserable cold for seven hours a
day requires passion and dedication, of which Errol has in spades. He says Nelson Cricket is going to have to invest in recruiting some new umpires or eventually they will end up with only player umpires. He says in the last 10-15 years, there have only been three or four new umpires come on board, with many more leaving. “When you are doing it on your own it can be a long lonely day.” Errol’s final game at Victory Square was washed out on the weekend meaning his last official game was Nelson College vs Wanderers at Brightwater on March 17. He was scheduled to officiate the 50 over final this Saturday but after missing a few games this season, decided to step aside. “The ones that have done the most games this season should be rewarded.” Post-retirement, Errol says Saturdays will still be sport-orientated. “I think I will dust off the old fly rod and spend some more time up the river.”

Top young triathletes take on Rabbit Island Peter Gibbs The Tineli National Schools Tri Champs brought triathlon action to Moturoa Rabbit Island last week. More than 600 triathletes, teachers, coaches, parents, supporters and volunteers made it one of the biggest events ever at one of Nelson's favourite beach venues. From enthusiastic 10-year-olds to fully grown under-19 competitors wearing national representative race kit, there was fierce competition with vocal support all around the course. Most of the Nelson competitors had not seen racing of this quality but still managed to come up with several medals over the two days of racing. Monday brought individual racing in triathlon during the morning, with competitors called upon to repeat their efforts in the afternoon with aquathlon (run, swim, run). The region's best individual results came in the aquathlon. The usual afternoon sea breeze declined to make an appearance, with a high tide and calm water making for picture postcard conditions. Fenlon Bayley of Nelson Prep School set a fast pace in the opening 1km run, sticking with the leaders to enter the 250m swim in third place. Although he dropped slightly in the swim, Fenlon made up for it

Photo: Evan Barnes/Shuttersport. in the final 1km run, scorching around the course with the fastest run time to bring him into the bronze medal position. Next up were the under-14 competitors. The field stayed close together in the opening run, with Isabella Thurlow of Waimea College close to the action. In a brilliant swim over 350m, Isabella worked through the field to be neck and neck with the leader, from St Kentigern College, but with a squad of runners hot on her heels. Giving it everything over the final 1km run, Isabella crossed the line in second place, 13 seconds behind the winner, with the next three competitors finishing within the next nine seconds. In the under-16 aquathlon, Josh
Sheridan of Nelson College was always near the front. At the end of 2km of running and 500m of swimming, Josh was in fourth place, close behind the three leaders. Closing the gap proved a bridge too far, as Josh crossed the line in fourth, 10 seconds outside the medals. The team events on Tuesday gave a chance for strong participation from the region, with entries in the Port Nelson Team Tag Triathlon consisting of the regulation two boys and two girls and competitors in teams of random composition taking part in the Sujon Team Tag Triathlon. With each team member needing to complete a full short triathlon, many competitors were put out of
their comfort zone, particularly when it came to the swim leg. As volunteer Tim Robinson put it: "‌ but come the team events, how wonderful to see how the camaraderie levelled out individualism. They cheered each other on. They cheered other teams on. True sport." In the U14 Port Nelson race, the Wai Col Racers, Paris Hart, Bailey O'Malley, Neve Anglesey and Lochy Mirfin came away with bronze medals. The U16 WC team, also from Waimea College, repeated that performance, with Ella Ranson, Tia Hania, Jacob Neal and Patrick Keys all taking bronze medals home. In the Sujon race, the combined Nelson College for Girls/Waimea
College team of Isla Richardson, Adam Clatworthy, Isabella Thurlow and Joseph Clatworthy took second place in U14. Just behind them, in the bronze medal position, was the Waimea College team of Jessie Brown, Ruby Campbell, Ryan Flowers and Sam Shelling. Josh Sheridan joined a team of athletes from all over the country to take a silver medal in the Sujon U16 team race. The event has been described as one of the best national championships of recent years, thanks to the lovely venue, the perfect weather and the willingness of the more than 50 volunteers to make a success of hosting young triathletes from all over the country.

Nelson jetboater wins national title Jonty Dine Fifteen year old Lee Merrion loves the adrenaline of driving at high speed. The Nelson teenager won the 2018 New Zeeland Power Boat Junior National Champs in Rotorua on March 6. Lee won his first race comfortably before being pipped in the second. He went on to win the competition by just three seconds over 2017 champion Haylee Macbeth from Auckland.
Chris Dufue, also from Nelson, got 2nd in the F3 class at the Nationals. On board ‘The Huntsmen,’ Lee says he reached speeds of about 51mph to finish two podiums higher than his 2017 result. “Last year I ended up rolling which took me out of contention for first or second and I got third in a different boat, but this year I raced in my Dad’s.” He says there are only three of these boats in New Zealand. “It has 30 horsepower on it and

tion in his first race and “just happened to get in front.” “We just wanted to get up there
and compete with the top boats in the North Island.” Lee’s journey into the sport was a natural progression with his father Craig also an avid enthusiast. “Dad got me a boat and a couple years later I was racing.” He says he and Craig often take their boat out to Rabbit Island and spend some time in the seat. Lee is a member of Rotoiti Power Boat Club and has been racing for three years. This weekend Lee travels to Hokitika to defend his South Island title.

CRICKET: The Tasman Premier League cricket competition has come to a damp and disappointing end. A thrilling final round was in prospect but, with all games scheduled for Nelson venues this weekend, a decision by the Nelson City Council to close all sports grounds has brought the season to a soggy conclusion. Following two days of continuous heavy rain, the council made the call on Friday. Under competition rules the Kelvin Scoble Trophy is awarded to the team that finishes top of the table after round robin play. Stoke/Nayland and Marlborough Labour Hire Dolphins ended the season tied on 24 points but Stoke take top place as they won five games to Dolphins four, despite the Marborough-based side having a better run differential. Stoke Nayland will now be the Top of the South representative in the Central Districts play-offs for the national club competition next season. The Marlborough Labour Hire Falcons will finish third. FOOTBALL: Nelson striker Jeremy Brockie was denied a crucial goal in the All Whites loss to Canada on Sunday. In their first match under new coach Fritz Schmid at the Pinatar Arena in Spain, the All Whites went down 1-0 to the world’s 90th ranked team. Jeremy looked to have put his side ahead in the 40th minute after netting a cross from Clayton Lewis, but was ruled to be offside. Canada then took the lead 15 minutes later when Tosaint Ricketts snuck one past keeper Max Crocombe.
