The growing popularity of mountainbiking in Nelson region is

resulting in a jump in the number of sport-related injuries with almost three times more mountainbikers being admitted to Nelson Hospital’s emergency department than five years ago.

Nelson Marlborough Health this week released figures that showed rugby is the most injury-prone sport with 22 to 27 per cent of injuries from 2012 to 2016. However, mountainbiking is closing the

gap, increasing from seven per cent of the 1446 sporting injuries in 2012 to 20 per cent of the 1254 injuries last year, to move ahead of soccer [10 per cent], netball [nine per cent] and basketball

The event is all about encouraging children of all fitness levels to get active in a fun, friendly environment. While 2016 saw 1715 entries from children aged between 7-15, this year was just up on that with 1754 entries.

grade three, trails that are suitable for the majority of riders and the club needs to look at building more of these trails. “One of the problems is the lack of progression for mountainbikers. We have the Tasman Great Taste Trail and quite a few hard trails but not enough in between and we need to address that, especially in Nelson.” Paul says the club would also like to work closely with Nelson Marlborough Health to identify where the injuries are occurring to see if there were any “black spots” on the region’s trails. The club would be able to modify those trails to make them safer and reduce the chance of injury.

safe.” Depending on their ages, the course featured a 50 to 200 metre swim, a four kilometre bike ride and a one and a half kilometre run, before participants passed triumphantly over the finish line amidst the cheers of proud family and friends. Also there to greet kids at the finish line with high-five’s and medals was Ironman triathlete Cameron Brown, Black Stick Anita Punt, track and field athlete Sarah Cowley-Ross, Nelson City councillor Tim Skinner and Nelson MP Nick Smith. Pot plants seized

Approximately 900 cannabis plants, two illegal firearms, $1700 in cash, and methamphetamine and cannabis utensils have been seized by police in a region-wide bust. Inspector Dan Mattison says 12 search warrants were executed at residential addresses and ru-

ral locations across Nelson and Marlborough two weeks ago, in an operation to prevent the supply of drugs. Police visited 50 separate sites on public land and have destroyed all of the recovered plants. Eight people were arrested and

will be prosecuted, and one person received a warning. “The supply of illicit drugs has a big impact on our community,” says Inspector Dan Mattison. “Drugs ruin lives… people are committing dishonesty crimes such as burglary to fund their habit.”

An idea to allow Nelson home owners to build a second dwelling, or “suite”, on their section without subdividing, is gaining some traction with Nelson City Council. Councillor Matt Lawrey is backing the “secondary suite” idea as a way to help solve the region’s growing housing shortage and put a handbrake on rising rents. A change to the rules to allow secondary suites would give people the right to turn their existing house into two dwellings or to build a second dwelling on their property. It is common practice in the Canadian cities of Calgary, Vancouver and Toronto, where there are now tens of thousands of secondary suites which hold a large majority of the rental market. And, it could become a reality for Nelson, with mayor Rachel Reese confirming that the idea is currently be-

Its stuff we’ve been working on for quite some time,” she says. Matt says that while more state housing is needed, smarter use of privatelyowned land would make a big difference in Nelson. “It’s a brilliantly simple but effective concept and something I campaigned on in October,” says Matt.

“The average occupancy in Nelson is 2.4 people per dwelling, almost two-thirds of private dwellings are home to only one or two residents, and 40 per cent of houses with four or more bedrooms have only one or two people living in them,” he says. “The biggest impediment to building new houses in Nelson isn’t the cost of construction or red tape - it’s the cost of land. “Allowing secondary suites effectively provides people with free land to build on. It’s free because they already

own it.” Matt says allowing secondary suites would have a long list of benefits for Nelsonians. “It would improve the quality and quantity of our housing stock, make it easier for the elderly to live in their own homes and help family members live near each other and support each other,” he says. He says that under our present rules such a move would require resource consent, which can be a “challenging and expensive process.” “The rules date back to a time when there wasn’t as much demand for housing and people were less comfortable about having others living near them,” he says. “Times, of course, change, and the impression I get is that, these days, allowing secondary suites could be a winner - particularly when you consider the benefits.” Residents will be able to make a submission to Nelson City Council’s draft Nelson Plan when it is released in October.

Strength and determination were on the line in Friday’s Tug of Peace, pitting defending champions against fierce rivals, staff against students and volunteers against sponsors. In its tenth year, the iconic Nelson Tasman Hospice fundraiser drew quite a crowd, shutting off the top of Trafalgar St for the giant tug of war competition. With 13 strong teams competing for the mens, womens and mixed team prize, the event provided plenty of entertainment with rounds lasting anywhere between a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it 4.4 seconds and a back and forwards slog lasting 1 minute

The winning Downer team after last week’s Tug of Peace. and 8.5 seconds. The Downer men were back to defend their title and defend it they did, but rivals Nelmac didn’t give up without a fight. The first of two finals saw Nelmac win after Downer shifted sideways at the end of the record-long round. However Downer brought it back, smashing Nelmac in the second final in a mere 7.63

seconds. Downer competitor Drew Hayes says the men just turned up and pulled on a rope, and it was their strict year-long diet of pies, sponsored by local bakeries, that won them the event. “It was a good feeling to pull Nelmac over the line, especially in only seven seconds, we’re pretty ecstatic about it.” And it wasn’t all bad news for

US president Donald Trump will have the biggest impact on our region’s economy this year, according to 18 per cent of businesses that responded to the Nelson Tasman Chamber of Commerce business confidence survey last month. The survey was conducted in early February and canvassed the views of the more than 500 businesses who are members of the chamber. Most respondents thought the New Zealand general election later this year would have the greatest impact on Nelson’s economy, with 43 per cent feeling that way. Only three per cent thought Brexit would have the greatest impact. The survey also showed Grant that business confidence Kerr. is extremely high, with 82 per cent responding that they were either “optimistic” or “very optimistic” about the year ahead. Nelson Tasman Chamber of Commerce chief executive Grant Kerr says the survey shows confidence in the region. “It’s great to see the confidence in the region. From a chamber perspective, we’re trying to continue that for as long as we can.” The survey results come on the back of the latest ASB regional economic scoreboard, which rank Nelson first. “Nelson sits number one nationwide in terms of residential construction growth for the year. Not far behind is the retail sector, where tourists are keeping the region’s cash registers ringing. Given the variety of drivers in play, we suspect that the region’s good times will roll on well into 2017.”

Police responded to an incident where a woman stole a car, and a pursuit began at around 6pm. A call for volunteers for Nelson’s Hospice Shop has been answered. In February, the shop had to shut its doors due to a severe lack of volunteers - so Nelson Weekly helped them to put the word out through an article. Fast-forward one month, and the shop now has 11 new volunteers who are trained and ready to go, another five in training – and, the phone is still ringing. Shop manager Dianne Timbs says she has been “completely overwhelmed” with the response, and they now have a great mix of people from “all different walks of life.” “Two of the new volunteers work full-time but are managing to give some of their time to us, some are retirees that have some time to give back, while some of the younger helpers are cur-

Nayland College heads for the clouds Kate Russell Nayland College is embarking on a project to save money, free up resources and improve their teaching and learning – all by moving to a cloud computing system. In the simplest terms, cloud computing means storing and accessing data and programs over the internet, instead of your computer’s hard drive. They are one of only three secondary schools in New Zealand that have been accepted into the Ministry of Education Cloud Transformation Pilot, with a national roll-out expected to start mid 2017. The project is being completed by pcMedia, who says Nayland’s shift to cloud services will come with no running costs for the college and will free up resources which would otherwise be wasted on servers, infrastructure and IT staff. It will also enable better collaboration between staff and students, and allow access to data so staff and students can log on to learn from any device, at anytime. Principal Daniel Wilson says it’s an exciting move for the college, and they have already benefited from the savings by not replacing their server fleet. “We have been able to save $150,000 that has been reinvested into classroom tools and resources,” he says. The Ministry of Education is aiming have all school services moved to a cloud-hosted environment by the end of 2018.

Nelson ready to celebrate its many cultures Victory Square will become the centre of cultural diversity in Nelson when it hosts Race Unity Day 2017 this Sunday. The annual event celebrates the many cultures that can be found within the region. “Nelson being the third most culturally-diverse city in the country,” says organiser Huup Waagen. Huup is working with a number of others from the Nelson Multicultural Council to put on a fantastic day of songs, dances, performances, food, crafts and education, for visitors, locals and those new to the area. “It’s an opportunity for people to come together and taste the food of our different cultures, see dances and performances, hear songs, it’s really special,” says Huup. “[It’s for] Kiwis as much as Europeans, as much as refugees, it’s for everyone. We want to give [newcomers] of different cultures an opportunity to show something of themselves, and we want to welcome them, perform for them and entertain them.” The 2017 Race Unity Day poster features a painting by Marilyn Andrews called Liberty, Equality and Fraternity, and depicts a vast table with people from all walks of life sat down eating together. Huup says he is hoping to recreate this on the day with a long table that people can sit down at with a plate of food and watch the great entertainment line-up. This includes belly dancing, performances from the Filipino, Chinese and Bhutanese communities, Russian dancers, music from the Celtic Pipe Band and gypsy jazz band Django Schmango. Race Unity Day 2017 will be held from 11am, when the opening ceremony begins, until 4pm. Entry is free.

Victory Community Centre's Sit and Be Fit is not just about exercising and keeping fit, it's about socialising and having fun as well. The centre's programme is specifically designed as an entrylevel fitness class for people who have mobility issues or difficulty standing up, although its appeal goes well beyond the obvious benefits for the body. Centre programme and facility manager Gareth Cashin, and all the class regulars, agree that it's the fun and social interaction that keeps them coming

back for more. "We have a good range of people coming along to the class, so it's not just for the older folk," Gareth says. "Our coach [Marion West] is wonderful and she emphasises the social aspect as well and makes sure everyone has fun while they are exercising." Class regular Bev Armstrong says she started attending Sit and Be Fit a couple of years ago because "I needed to start doing some exercise again." Bev says she has noticed a marked improvement in her mobility and strength since attending the classes, as well as enjoying the company. "Marion is so good and it's a lot

of fun," Bev says. Janet McInnes says she attends the classes because she needed to "use it or lose it". "It's a good way of keeping fit and joining in things," Janet says. "I'm on my own, so I really enjoy the company." Dennis Ready says the classes are ideal for him because he is in a wheelchair. He says the exercises can easily be modified to suit all levels of fitness and mobility. Sit and Be Fit is held at the Victory Community Centre at 2 Totara St, Nelson, every Tuesday from 11am to 11.45am. Classes cost $3 to attend and all are welcome.

He still plays in the Nelson Brass Band, has served as a Freemason for more than 70 years and volunteers for Arthritis NZ after developing two forms of arthritis.

Along with his partner Sue, Maurice leads an active life and part of it is volunteering at the Ngawhatu swimming pool, where he is a trained lifeguard. “But I only save the ladies,” he joked. Last week he and Sue spent two hours at Z petrol station in Halifax St, where he worked as a “community concierge” washing windows and greeting customers. He handed out orange tokens which his customers could use to vote for Arthritis NZ and help the charity receive cash from Z, through its Good in the Hood promotion. Maurice says he got relief from his treatment so wanted to give back, but he wasn’t sure if he’d be offered a job after his efforts. “Sue’s right into it and I just follow along, but when people respond you feel good.”

Brittany Spencer The rain couldn’t drown out the melodies of 39 pipe bands and over 1200 Celtic pipers and drummers at the 2017 New Zealand and South Pacific Pipe Band Championships at Trafalgar Park over the weekend. Defending Grade One Champions the Canterbury Caledonian Society managed to retain their title. Meanwhile, the Celtic Pipe Band Nelson who hosted the competition came second in the Grade 2 Championships. The Celtic Development Pipe Band came second in the Grade 4B championships and City of Nelson came ninth in the Grade 3 Championships. Celtic Pipe Band drum major Helen Gilchrist says the band are on a massive high following the weekend’s results. “We’re very happy, everyone is buzzing, and it’s exceptionally, fabulously, cool to have that many people come to Nelson to compete. “I’ve been down at the airport and seeing everyone off, they’re all buzzing and very impressed with the whole contest and everyone loves Nelson, even though it was crappy weather.”

"I just tried to listen to my First XV coaches, then my Nelson Club coaches and the Makos boys, and now I'm here." He made special mention of departing Makos and Chiefs winger James Lowe, "I always thought I was pretty strong physically but there were areas of my game that I wanted to improve on and J Lowe helped me with that. "Areas like my kicking and my high ball ability are both things I've worked on and [James] has been great for that." Tima did not start playing the

game until he was 12 years old. Before then he'd dabbled in football and basketball before finding his calling as a barnstorming winger. His younger brother Leicester has also been a key part of the Nelson College First XV. "We had some hard moments growing up, but we knew we always had the rugby ball and we'd walk to the park and play some one-on-one and just try to beat each other with footwork. The New Zealand Under-20s have a further camp in April, before taking part in the Oceania Tournament on the Gold Coast in April and May. A squad of 28 will be selected to go to the Under-20 World Championship in Georgia from May 25 to June 18.

The Giants, who are the only NBL franchise to be a part of every single season since their inception in 1980, have drawn five consecutive away games through the month of April, including away games on back-toback nights against the Canterbury Rams and Southland Sharks on April 21 and 22. Coach Alan McAughtry says, despite the short build-up, he wants his team to play to win this year. “We want to win, too,””he says. We are working hard five nights a week, doing individual sessions and we are all really putting it in. “The work that has gone in before I arrived needs to be acknowledged. “I know there’s a honeymoon period with every new job, but the

hard work starts now and we want to have a great season.” The local players have remained largely unchanged with Sam Dempster, Ali Granger, Bronson Beri, Tom Ingham, Riley Bensemann, Nic Trathen, Finn Delany, Tyler March and Sam Seelen, all Nelsonbased players returning. Finn has returned from a big first season with the New Zealand Breakers and much will be expected of him in 2017. Alan says the integration of the local and international players “has been first class” and he was expecting the team to gel quickly. Sam Dempster says, despite a shortened preseason, he is confident of a good showing in 2017 given the calibre of players on the roster. “It’s always going to be hard, we’ve had a coach for a week, two imports for a week and one of our starters for a week, but we always pride ourselves on getting ready for the start of the season and I

The Giants had two preseason games against the Rams and Wellington Saints in Blenheim over the weekend, which Sam says is always a good measuring stick for where the team is at. “I think those games are about take-aways, what you can learn from each game and awareness of things we need to work on. The score is not so important.” Sam emphasised the importance of a fast start and the value of wins on the road. “We will have to have a fast start but I believe we have the players that are capable of that. “Picking up wins on the road is tough in this league but it’s something we are going to have

to do if we want to give our home fans something to get excited about. “We want to see the (Trafalgar Centre) packed out this year, we’ve got a really good group of guys who are going to play some exciting basketball.” The Giants lost both their preseason matches in Blenheim over the weekend to the Wellington Saints and Canterbury Rams, respectively. Alan says the first-up effort against the Saints was scratchy and lacked the effort he was expecting, but the players bounced back against the Rams to lead the game for the first three quarters before surrendering the lead late. Nelson College will represent New Zealand at a global secondary schools sevens rugby tournament at the birthplace of the game, Rugby School in England, later this month. Nelson College, widely regarded as the birthplace of rugby in New Zealand will send a 12-strong line up of first XV players to the event which will be part of Rugby School’s 450th celebrations in 2017. The squad will be coached by former Tasman Mako Andrew Goodman and will face teams from Canada Wales, England, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Australia and South Africa amongst others. It will also give the team

a chance to play on The Close grounds where William Webb Ellis is said to have invented the game by picking up a soccer ball and running with it in 1823. Nelson College’s presence at the tournament has been supported by both the Tasman Rugby Union and the New Zealand Rugby Union. Nelson College team manager Peter Grigg says the team is keen to make an impression on the tournament. “All 12 of the squad have trained really hard over the summer months to get ready for this and I believe we are as prepared as we can be. “While it has meant a bit of a disjointed first XV prepaAs New Zealand’s sole representatives, Nelson College will look to take out the International Rugby 7’s tournaments being hosted by Rugby School in England to help celebrate the Schools 450th Anniversary.

Opinion: Ben Harris return a Rain victorious golden chance for Tasman in absorbing Jacob Page Sports Editor

Star striker Ben Harris will return to Richmond Athletic this season and Tasman United should do everything they can to get his signature for next summer. It has been confirmed that the 26-year-old, who scored for Team Wellington against Tasman United in their 5-1 win on Sunday, will return to play for Richmond Athletic in the Nelson division one competition which begins next month. Ben confirmed the move, saying he would return to Richmond by the end of the month and then fly between Nelson and Wellington to complete his commitments with Team Wellington “I’m hopeful of playing a couple of months for Richmond but at some point I’ll head home to England, so I doubt I’ll be there all season.” Ben, who is off contract with Team Wellington at the end of the campaign, says he would be open to playing for Tasman “if the right offer came along”. “I know some of the guys down there and I’m one of

Photo: Andrew Board. those people who never says never to any opportunity, so I’d certainly consider it.” Tasman's debut national league season has had plenty of highs and lows but their late season form, which has included back-to-back wins under interim coach Davor Tavich, has probably earned the team a pass mark based on improvement and first year goodwill. That outcome looked unlikely under initial coach Richard Anderson, who said all the right things but couldn't seem to win over the players. One of the big questions is

whether Tasman should try to secure strikers Paul Ifill and Ermal Hajdari for next season. Paul was the star signing, but hasn't really stamped his authority on the competition as many expected. Ermal was the one coach Anderson thought would be the crowd-pleaser and main scorer. While he has sublime touches and time on the ball, he has not found the back of the net with the regularity that the franchise would have wanted. Also, being young, he may look to go elsewhere after a season in New Zealand.

It's hard to predict what impact the loss of veteran defender Mark Johnston for the whole debut season had on the team and whether the defence would have been the leakiest in the competition if he'd been in the heart of it. Perhaps, with the return of Mark and a bench role for Paul, and the signing of Ben, fortunes can change for Tasman come season two. At 37-years-old, Paul has all the touches and heady play to be a threat. He could prove to be an invaluable late substitute against tired defenders if he's willing to 'ride the pine' for such a role. It would also allow him to stay hands-on with his Stokebased football academy and help mentor younger players within the Tasman setup. Despite rough patches on the field, Tasman have proved they can be competitive and, with the largest number of fans in the league, there's clearly a desire for the team to thrive in the coming seasons. Tasman will play its final game of the Stirling Sports Premiership season this Saturday at Trafalgar Park against Southern Utd. Kick off at 1pm.

Nelson driver Ian Burson was confirmed as a runner after being lent the 3NZ of Shane McIntyre. Ian’s current car has been sold and he was waiting on a new one for next season, Ian was sitting in fourth going into the final weekend and was an outside chance to defend his title, but he too was caught up in the final feature race incident, ending his challenge. Ray Stewart from Cromwell took out the feature race win. The points gained put him into the series lead while New Zealand champion Peter Dickson had his first peek at the track,. He was impressive despite a few brushes with the wall that scarpered his advance at times, but the points gained in the feature was enough to sneak into second overall. Campbell McManaway was the most consistent driver of the night, picking up second in the feature to win the round. The wet weather was a silent victory for Stewart who would claim the Vertex Super Cup with racing abandoned for the final showdown.

Local snowboarder Nelson crews on podium in Japan strike gold at SI Jacob Page

Nelson’s Hamish Ferrier has made the most of an opportunity to finish second in the prestigious Hakuba 47 Boarder Cross – Snowboard racing championship event in Hakuba, Japan. Competing for the first time in this format he finished 2nd in a field of 24 including several Japanese Factory Team racers – and he has his girlfriend to thank for it. “My girlfriend competes at pro level, so she brought me to the race as she wanted me to compete as well. Hamish, who worked at Rainbow Ski field in 2009 and 2010, lives and trains at Mt Hutt by Methven, but has

been based in Hakuba, Japan since January. “I started snowboarding when I was seven at Mt Hutt, then when we moved to Nelson I started riding at Rainbow and worked there for a season after I left school.” Hamish says he was surprised at how well he went in the event, given it was his first go in that discipline of snowboarding.

“The level is quiet high in Japan as there are a lot of regular riders who compete most weekends in a pro or open class.” Hamish has spent time creating and designing courses for these types of event in New Zealand. “With second I was pretty happy, as it was my first race and I normally do freestyle and not racing.”

Jack and Luke also combined to win the Under-18 double by more than three seconds. David earned a bronze in the Under-18 single. The Nelson College for Girls combination of Leah van Eeden, Mahalia Shand, Maaike van Eeden,

Caitlyn Byrne and cox Evie Strawbridge struck gold in the Under-17 coxed quad by more than a second. The under-18 coxed four of Gabrielle Hannen, Mahalia, Leah, Kayla Baker and Evie were dominate in claiming victory in their final by more than seven seconds. The same combination claimed silver in the quad. Gabrielle and Kayla also finished second in the Under-18 double. The duo finished 16 seconds behind a dominant Ashburton College crew. Leah and Mahalia wrapped up the medal winning with silver in the Under-17 double. The Maadi Cup National Secondary School Rowing Championships begin on March 27 at Lake Karapiro in the Waikato which is the home of rowing in New Zealand. Most than 2500 rowers are expected to compete at the event which continues to swell in numbers.
