Steve says, between his day job as a manager for Envirowaste and him building his own home, there was little time to dedicate to the event. He helped start the Motor Show four years ago and since then it has grown into a major event on the car calendar.

“It’s just incredible. Every year new people turn up. It changes every year.” He thought it might suit a car club, association or even a business looking for something to use as a promotional tool. Steve says he has always wanted the Motor Show to be for every-

Police are still investigating the cause of a fire that killed an elderly woman in Stoke last week. Fire crews arrived at the Main Rd Stoke property shortly after 4am on Wednesday to find the home fully enveloped and with a collapsed roof.

Investigators have said that because of the extent of the damage it was difficult to ascertain the cause of the fire. A post mortem has been carried out on the woman, thought to be in her 70s. However, they have not released her name as formal identification would take several days because

of the extent of the woman’s injuries. Two people lived at the house, however, the other man was at the address when the fire broke out. Meanwhile, the abandoned Ngawhatu Psychiatric Hospital in Stoke went up in flames in the early hours of Saturday morning,

It may only be June, but Christmas is already high on the agenda for Nelson City Council. After a lack of decorations last year, council have listened and last week approved $100,000 in its annual plan towards improving the city’s Christmas display. It is a big increase in spending for the council, who last year forked out just $21,600 on Christmas decorations. This included $12,000 for the installation and lighting of the tree on Trafalgar St, decorating the Norfolk Pine in Tahunanui, and putting up new Christmas flag banners throughout the central city and Stoke. The allocated $100,000 will go towards decorations and a new tree for the Church Steps, which the public is being asked to design. Along with Nelson Arts Council, the council is asking people to send in their tree designs with council spokesperson Paul Shattock saying they are keen to see a design that “really reflects Nelson’s unique identi-

Mystery artist creates buzz at cafe Journalist

Next time you pop down to Squire’s in Stoke for a coffee you could walk away with your very own portrait. For the past year, a mystery artist has been frequenting the eatery and drawing punters as well as creating his very own coffee-based cartoon scenes. “I thought they were really cool when he first came in,” says owner Kim Hall. “He has gotten better and better.” Sometimes the artist, who signs his name only as “Walker, leaves his creations on the table. Other times he will give them to customers. “They are just amazed when he hands them to them,” says Kim. “When he leaves our regular customers will rush over to see what he has done.” His early works at Squires were still life drawings - of salt and pepper shakers or the light fittings in the cafe. But, increasingly, he has been

creating small “pop art” vignettes, reminiscent of the work of famous American artist Roy Lichtenstein. They are all based around coffee, betrayal and the tensions created by loving something too much. Curiously, Kim says “Walker” only drinks tea. In one of the portraits he has used tea as a stain to give his character some colouring. Kim has been so impressed with the drawings that she has framed them. There are still more to be displayed. “They are great for people to look at and enjoy while they are waiting for a coffee,” she says. “They are too good to be stashed away.” Kim says the artist, who brings in his own drawing materials, seems to like the mystery he has created. “He is not a talky person.” But his artwork is certainly all the buzz at Squires. LEGAL CHALLENGE AGAINST BROOK SANCTUARY: The Brook Valley Community Group is legally challenging national regulations for pest control in a bid to stop brodifacoum-laced bait being dropped at the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary. The sanctuary will close on July 2 to prepare for the three aerial drops but the group have put forward submissions on pest control regulations that could delay it. In its submission, the Brook Valley Community Group requests that communities need at least 12 months’ notice of the date of any pest control operation, describing the use of poisons as “a monstrosity”. However, Environment Minister Dr Nick Smith he is disappointed by the group’s actions, describing the submissions as “disingenuous”, “impractical” and “unreasonable”.

The Nelson Suburban Club said goodbye to its surplus stock on Sunday, in an auction that featured around 140 lots. The restaurant, main hall and one function room set to be pulled down as part of a redevelopment. The club will now be operating within a much smaller footprint and board member Stan Holland says they will be renovating this new space to better suit their club members. The items that went up for auction included around 66 tables and 270 chairs, speakers, a full-sized billiards table, items from the former restaurants commercial kitchen and a range of miscellaneous items. Auctioneer John Walker kicked things off at 11am, with items selling to a range of buyers, including several local businesses. Mrs Smith’s Café and Vegetables in Riwaka took home kitchen equipment and bar stools, as well as a sound system which was an

Nelson North Country Club’s vice president Mark Anderson and club manager Deirdre Prattley were successful in buying several tables and chairs, which would be “perfect for the club when we have our annual speed shearing and pig hunt events, as well as other functions,” says

Sport Tasman purchased 140 chairs which will be used in one of their facilities, while Wakefield Hotel owners acquired several items including kitchen equipment and seating, as well as the full-sized billiards table. new home. This is the first auction they’ve been to in search of furniture, saying it had been great to grab several bargains. Nelson Suburban Club had hoped to unveil to members a draft plan and a draft timeline of the redevelopment as it effected the club, however that is still being discussed with the Gibbons Group. The new date for the unveil is this Thursday.

The inspiring work of volunteers in helping save dozens of whales at Farewell Spit has seen Project Jonah come away with the Supreme Award at this year’s Trustpower Nelson Tasman Community Awards. The awards were announced last night at a function at Seifried Estate Winery. Trustpower community relations representative Emily Beaton says Project Jonah is made up of volunteers who are everyday Kiwis. “Volunteers are the ambassadors in the community, sharing and educating people on how to help marine mammals, volunteering assistance at training courses, community events and strandings.” Nelson Tasman is home to

Matiu Rota just wanted to be accepted. He had come from a broken home and wanted a family. So he turned to gangs - to drugs, alcohol and violence. “I never knew love as a kid growing up,” he says. He had his first criminal conviction at 15-years-old and served several terms in prison for offences like assault, burglary and aggravated robbery. At 26-years-old he found himself homeless - living in a burned out house on Auckland’s streets and contemplating his life. “I had no family, no friends, no hope, no future … I was a drug addict. I had uncontrollable rage

and I was looking back and started to reflect on my life.” He thought about suicide. But when he was at rock bottom he met, by chance, with a pair of Christians. “They spoke to me about Jesus. Then I started going to church.” He says it was like walking into another world. “The hardest thing for me was to understand what love was. I never remember being loved as a child.” But in church that was all they spoke about. He came off the streets and into the home of one of the parishioners. He started to look at his life in a way he never had before. Matiu started to figure out how he could forgive his father for abandoning him as a baby and how to

forgive his mother for disowning him when he was 15. “There were a lot of tears and a lot of pain.” Matiu says he was never taught about right and wrong growing up, so it was a process in understanding what that meant and being “set free” of that baggage. About 10 years ago, he did. He started going to Bible College. Then in 2014 he started studying counselling at the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology. He gained his certificate and is now having a break from studying towards his degree. “I want to help people. I want to use the experience I have had to be used for good.” Matiu, a single dad to an 11-yearold son, says it gave him tools for his own personal development. In 2008 he started his own min-

istry called “The Peacemakers”. The non denominational church uses some of the motifs and language from gang culture to help give those who are embedded in it an alternative to the life they are leading. “We don’t believe a church is confined to four walls. It is wherever we are.” He says other churches have looked down on them because they don’t “fit into a box”, but he has seen the good they have done. They also don’t believe in preaching the gospel. “We live it. I don’t want to be in people’s faces.” But that does not stop the public often getting the wrong idea when he and his parishioners are out in public. They wear leather jackets with patches and are heavily tattooed.

But these ones read things like “Child of God” and “Jesus Christ.” Matiu has a facial tattoo, as part of his full moko, that reads: “Jesus Christ for Life”. “We are taking familiar concepts to people from gang culture and turning them around in a Biblical way,” he says. Matiu says he doesn’t mind people judging them from their appearance but many do come and speak to them about who they are. “Some don’t take the time to read what we wear. They see patches and judge. But we are all human and this is about looking further than just skin deep.” Matiu says he and the church do not have anything to prove. “We are just thankful that we were taken out of the darkness and hope that we can be a light.”

Broadgreen Intermediate will be full of mystery and mayhem this Saturday, as the Nelson Symphony Orchestra brings their biennial children’s concert to the region’s youngest music lovers. The show, entitled just that – Mystery and Mayhem – is sure to delight all ages; with the show’s producer Frances Rae saying that viewers can expect “a lot of fun”. "It’s a place for children to see and experience orchestral music, and it is very interactive and visual with lots of movement and puppetry." Frances says they will be performing three shows this Saturday, with each show running for around an hour. In the show, a mystery is at hand, as the orchestra’s soloist goes missing while performing - and all the suspects are still in the hall. Local actor and singer Martin White plays the famous detective C#7, who helps to solve the case with the help of a Secret Agent Cat, puppets and the audience. Frances says the show uses

Nominations open for hospitality awards

Kate Russell The hunt is on for the stars of Nelson’s hospitality industry, ahead of the region's biennial hospitality awards. Nominations opened yesterday, and members of the public are invited to put down their favourite in any or all of the nine categories. This year will also see a major change in how the nomination and voting processes are carried out, with everything going online through a dedicated website. Voters can also put in their nominations through the Nelson App. Nominations are open for two weeks, closing on Monday July 10, and then finalists for each category will be decided and listed on the website.

People will then be able to vote for their favourite finalists from July 18. The awards will be presented on August 21 and the judges will be a combination of local professionals and national industry experts. Nelson Hospitality Awards committee member, Mishael Sowman, says that the awards are all about "celebrating hospitality in our area". "These people work very hard all year round and it’s their opportunity to be recognised for all that work," she says. Finding every single weka within the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary’s 14m pest proof fence is no easy task. The curious bird is the single most vulnerable species in the sanctuary’s upcoming poison drop, so getting them out is a top priority, according to their Ecosystem Ranger, Robert Schadewinkel. Armed with a wildlife sound machine, cheese, cage traps, hand nets and a noose, they have managed to move 24 birds to safety since they started their “weka hunt” two weeks ago. “The general estimate is that there are 40 to 60 weka in there, but it really is impossible to know,” Robert says. “We are just catching as many as we can.” There are also low numbers of robin, morepork, harrier hawk and The New Zealand falcon within the fence, however Robert says the majority of these native birds will be completely unaffected by the poison operation. “The pellets are coloured green, which is a colour generally ignored by birds and not mistaken for food. However, with weka being natural

foragers, they may directly eat the bait,” he says. “Weka are omnivores, so they eat anything.” The sanctuary has been searching for weka with the Department of Conservation, primarily in the lower part of sanctuary, and then releasing them just outside the fence in a similar habitat. And, just before the drop takes place, Robert says they will scour the same area again, as more weka will move down into the “vacant spaces”. “The lower part of the sanctuary is prime habitat for weka - they love the undergrowth,” says Robert. “They are very territorial birds, so if they see a vacant space they’ll move down into it – the lower part is the best real estate.” Currently, Robert says that young weka are at danger of being eaten by stoats and feral cats. “If they are desperate, they will go for a weka, but the adults are resilient,” he says. “But, once predators are removed they will bounce back like rabbits, it’s going to be mind boggling.” A final count of the rescued weka will be made available by the sanctuary in July.

Nelson’s parks and reserves feature some very steep terrain which can make it not just difficult but hazardous at times to maintain for the Nelmac team, until now. Just over a month ago, Nelmac purchased a Spider mower after identifying a health and safety issue amongst staff who were having to do line trimming on these slopes. In wet winter conditions, members of the team were slipping and falling over, while in summer the dry grass also proved to be unstable underfoot. In a bid to eliminate any risk to their staff, Nelmac started investigating specialist mower options and, after trialling some different models, decided on the Spider. The new piece of equipment has the ability to tackle slopes over 20 degrees but the best bit about it is that it’s solely operated by remote control, allowing the team to stand on safe ground while the machine goes to work. Another great feature of the mower is independent wheels, so instead of turning the machine around on a slope, the operator can move the mower backwards and forwards, as well as side to side to cover the area. With

wheels instead of tracks, the Spider won’t rip up the grass, producing a much better finish on the region’s parks and reserves and, with the ability to travel at eight kilometres an hour, it can certainly get the job done fast and efficiently. “The guys who we’ve got using it are getting more and more skilled as they get used to its capabilities,” says Lloyd Tibble, contract manager for Nelson Green Spaces. “We can use it for all sorts of work where we would have used the guys line trimming. Even breaking in areas for conservation planting, the Spider will mow over gorse up to 30mm thick. Previously we would have gone in with a scrub bar to cut that down, whereas now we can use the mower to mulch it all up so we can just plant through it.” Nelmac is looking for more opportunities to use the machine and it’s not just for the work they do for council, but private residences too. Your Voice Brook Sanctuary In light of recent anti-drop protests about the Brook Sanctuary, I would like to explain why I, for one, am looking forward to the sanctuary becoming predatorfree. I grew up in Karori, Wellington, where a similar brodifacoum operation took place to clear the Karori Wildlife Sanctuary/Zealandia of pests, and the boom in birdlife since then in Karori and throughout Wellington has been mind-blowing. I never thought I would see kaka and bellbirds in my parents' suburban backyard, let alone saddlebacks breeding in a city reserve outside of the sanctuary. I also spent over eight weeks in cen-

tral Kahurangi National Park last summer, an area which received large-scale 1080 drops in 2014 and 2016. While out there in the bush I saw/ heard great spotted kiwi, whio, rock wren, weka, kea, kaka, riflemen, robins and many other forest birds on a regular basis. In my experience, the most silent forests have been those where no form of pest control has been undertaken at all. I am excited about the future for birdlife in Nelson once the Brook sanctuary is predator-free, and would like to thank all those who have put the hard work into getting the sanctuary to where it is today. Brodifacoum has very low solubility in water and is broken down by soil bacteria. The follow up from brodifacoum drops in Maungatautari and several other fenced sanctuaries has shown no residual brodifacoum in the water and no ill effects on humans or other animals and fish, only a dramatic and prolonged increase in the number of native birds. Nearly 30,000 hours of trapping time has not had a huge effect on bird numbers in the quarter of the Sanctuary area we were able to trap, hence the plan to use poison. City to feast on food, music and light Kate Russell A Nelson winter festival that celebrates local food and culture is back for its third season, with organisers promising that this year’s event will be bigger and better than ever. Uniquely Nelson’s Feast for the Senses runs over July and August, and will incorporate light shows, music, and the ever-popular movable feasts - which provide a dining experience at three city restaurants within walking distance. Simon Duffy of Uniquely Nelson says tickets for the moveable feasts went on sale early last week and are

already selling out fast, with 400 tickets already snapped up. “There are only 100 tickets left,” he says. “We actually increased the number of tickets this year, too, so people can pick and mix – it’s just grown and grown.” Simon says the movable feasts are a good way to get people out of the house in the middle of winter. “It’s great to see people getting out and mingling – and that’s the essence of Feast for the Senses – getting people to turn off their TVs and venture out of their homes. “And, by the end of the

Trees close to power lines are a safety hazard. On 1st July 2005 the Tree Regulations came into effect to protect the security of the supply of electricity and for the safety of the public. There is the potential for injury or even death by electrocution if you touch a tree which is touching a power line. Children in particular like to climb trees and when these trees are close to power lines, there is always the risk of serious injury or even death. Trees can cause power cuts especially in strong winds, rain and snow. Your power supply may be disrupted when trees fall or branches break, damaging power lines, poles or other structures. In dry conditions serious fires can be caused. The Tree Regulations spell out the responsibilities for electricity lines companies and tree owners in making sure that trees are kept safely trimmed away from the lines. They define two zones around power lines as shown in the diagram below. Growth Limit Zone – no part of a tree or other vegetation should be inside this zone. Lines companies are required to issue Cut or Trim Notices to owners when their trees are within the Growth Limit Zone. Notice Zone – if your trees reach this zone you may receive a Hazard Notice warning that the trees must not enter the Growth Limit Zone. Nelson Electricity carries out routine surveys on its network and issues Cut or Trim Notices to owners of trees that have grown into the Growth Limit Zone. If you receive a Tree Cut or Trim Notice it is important that you read the information sent to you and respond accordingly. Tree owners are required to respond to Notices by either:  

Arranging for trees to be trimmed at their cost by a professional lines-qualified arborist to a clearance outside the Notice Zone; or Informing the lines company that they have no interest in the trees. The lines company may then fell the trees (in some instances they may choose to trim).

If trees on your property have not previously been trimmed by the Nelson Electricity you may be eligible for the first trim free of charge. In exceptional circumstances, a dispensation from the regulatory clearances may be applied for. If tree owners do not comply with the Regulations and fail to have their trees cut or trimmed they can be fined up to $10,000 along with $500 per day for ongoing offences. Tree owners may also be liable for the cost of outages and repair of power lines if damage has been caused by their trees. Cutting or trimming trees near power lines is an extremely hazardous activity. If branches or people come into contact with a live line while the tree is being cut a potentially fatal electric shock may result. If live lines are brought down by cutting trees, then serious safety hazards to other people and property in the vicinity may occur. Trimming or felling trees in close proximity to power lines must only be carried out by professional arborists who have had specific training and are qualified to work near power lines. "The kids really look forward to it, they’re really challenged by it but once they’ve done it they feel so good and proud of themselves, it's like an initiation for Tahunanui School. It's kind of how you make it in this community." And Barbara says it’s not just the

Exclamations of "I can’t feel my anything", "this was a bad idea", and "I’m like, minus 100 degrees right now" were shouted, squealed, and screamed across the beach as Tahunanui School students ran full bore into the ocean during the school's annual Mid Winter Swim. Staff and parents joined 88 students at Tahunanui Beach, with some swimmers gingerly dipping their toes in and others screaming as they charged straight ahead. Although this year didn’t have stormy waves or frost down to the sea, the water temperature was enough to take tiny bodies from warm to numb in seconds. Tahunanui School student Jed Lyttle says only one word ran

kids who got in the spirit of the Mid Winter Swim. "We had 20 parents in the water, they’re always the hardest to convince to get in, they’ll groan but they’re all smiles afterwards." When asked how cold she was, Barbara says she was so numb she didn’t know what cold was anymore. This year’s swim was themed around the America’s Cup, with boos rising as a student dressed up as Oracle ran around and Deputy Principal Ian Lamby convincing students that Burmuda was straight out in the water and that by running in and chanting "Team New Zealand" they would spur on the Kiwi sailors. After their polar bear swim, students got to warm up with hot showers, hot chocolate and a chocolate fish.

The Stoke Loop (route 7) of the NBus Service will stop operating from 1 July 2017 so the last day of service will be 30 June. The route was introduced in December 2015 but has not received sufficient patronage to make it viable. The service was introduced to provide a link throughout the wider Stoke area but has struggled to gain support. Different routes or other options that might prove more useful in the Stoke area will be included in a wider review of public transport that will be carried out this year.

Nightingale Library Memorial refurbishment Nightingale Library Memorial in Tahunanui has a planned closure for refurbishment from 26 July through to 15 October. Works include major improvements on the lobby area, reconfiguring the staff workroom, installing a new service desk, reconfiguring the toilets, building a northside-entry ramp for greater accessibility, upgrading heating and security systems, recarpeting, painting and varnishing. This is a planned renewal project jointly funded by Nelson City Council and the Nightingale Bequest.

Tahunanui Modellers' Pond appeal In February 2017, Council decided to proceed with the upgrade of the Modellers' Pond, and to work collaboratively with the Modellers' Society to make this a reality. Council set up a working group to oversee the progress of the upgrade. The working group has met several times and is happy with the progress to date. Resource consents for the upgrade have been secured and detailed design is nearing completion. The Modellers' Society has continued to make progress with its fundraising. Funding has been secured from the Rata Foundation as well as in the form of pledges in kind, although a funding application to the Lotteries Commission was unfortunately unsuccessful. Council officers are jointly reviewing the application to the Lotteries Commission with the Modellers' Society, with the aim of re-submitting at the next

available application round. Councillor Tim Skinner, Chair of the Sport and Recreation Committee, says that the Modellers' Society is now well placed to step up their fundraising, including securing pledges from businesses, organisations and individuals, both financial and in-kind. "The working group is pleased to see the progress being made towards the upgrade of the Modellers' Pond, which will ultimately enable it to continue to be enjoyed by our community, whilst further improving its stormwater functionality." Saxton Field Outdoor Fitness Station all go! The Nelson Lioness Club joined with the community to celebrate the recent installation of eight fitness machines at Saxton Field, near to the entrance to Saxton Stadium. The machines are similar to those at Tahunanui Reserve, Orchard Reserve and beside the Maitai Path at Collingwood Street. The Nelson Lioness Club supported the installation through their fundraising efforts. The station is already being well-used so make sure you stop off and give it a try next time you are out exercising in Saxton Field. Each machine includes instructions on how to use them correctly so even firsttimers can enjoy them.

Council’s contractor will be onsite from Monday 3 July setting up for the next stage of the York Stream stormwater upgrade. This will link the work completed at the intersection of Tipahi St/Kawai Street South in 2013 and across Waimea Road into Boundary Road in 2016. The work involves the installation of 1800mm diameter concrete stormwater pipes, and the installation and relocation of other utility services. It will include some major excavations so traffic will be reduced to one lane with temporary traffic lights maintaining flow in both directions. The project is expected to continue until November 2017, subject to weather and any unforeseen circumstances. This project is part of Council’s ongoing commitment to improving stormwater infrastructure to reduce the risk of flood damage to roads and property in heavy rain events.

Further details on the plans for the closure period, regarding refurbishment or library service, will be announced as they become available. P 546 8708 | www.copierco.co.nz Mike Brady and Trevor Allan established The Copier Company with nothing but an idea, 15 years later that idea has grown into a successful business with 15 dedicated staff members and a reputation, throughout much of the South Island, for excellent service. In 2002, Mike and Trevor saw a need in Nelson for a local company that supplied and serviced copiers, scanners and printers, as an alternative to

the international companies. “One of the frustrating things that we found was that you were always having to ring an 0800 number, whereas our philosophy from day one was, you’re dealing with local people so when you ring, you will get answered here in Nelson, by a human,” says Trevor. Initially Mike and Trevor had no clients, no machines in the field and one part-time technician. They were located in an 80sqm office space in

Hops on the ‘upswing’ Locally Owned and Operated

The hop industry is growing with three new hops farms being planted for next season as the demand for speciality hops for craft beers continues to climb. There are 18 growers with 450 hectares of hops around the Tasman district, which is the only place in the country where they are commercially grown. Those growers produced 760 tonnes of hops this season, but that’s set to increase to around 1100 tonnes as at least three new farms and another 200 hectares come on stream over the next four years. Hops New Zealand chief executive Doug Donelan says the new farms near Tapawera, Tadmor and Korere are the first plantings in “forever” and reflect “an upswing in demand for hops” based on the popularity of speciality hops used in craft beers. Doug says many of the speciality hops have been developed by Plant and Food Research in Riwaka, which has another “two

A massive 733 tonnes of this year’s harvest were New Zealand varieties, with 185 tonnes made up of the popular variety Nelson

Sauvin. “The good thing we have going for us is that we have some unique varieties,” Doug says. “That’s allowed us to push our way into the craft market in New Zealand and overseas and that’s where the high value is.”

Doug says one of the interesting trends has been the increase in domestic demand for hops “which has grown considerably in the last five years”. The growth in the domestic craft beer market has resulted in exports declining from 90 per cent

of the harvest to 75 percent, he says. New grower Aaron Moleta, who is helping to plant 30 hectares of hops on a family farm near Tapawera, says it is their first venture into the industry. The Moletas run a sheep and beef farm in the Marlborough Sounds but were keen to diversify into what they see as a growth sector. Aaron says it will be a significant investment putting in around 2500 poles and 90,000 plants, as well as building a 40m by 26m processing shed. They are planting 15 hectares in time for next season with another 15 to be planted – they will grow six different varieties. It is good timing for the Moletas, who are not only investing in the industry on the “upswing” but also missed last season’s wet and windy weather which resulted in slower growth and plant breakages. Doug says growers were predicting “a dire outcome for the crop” until the weather improved in autumn and “plants responded by filling out marginally and displaying a semblance of a crop”.

Night market to warm up Morrison Square Kate Russell Nelsonians are being encouraged to pop on some polkadots, grab a parasol and head down to Morrison Square this Friday for the annual Midwinter Night Market. Now in its third year, the event will raise funds for Project Jonah after last year’s market raised about $500 for the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary. It will be running in conjunction with Late Night on Hardy, and it also kicks off the start of Uniquely Nelson’s Feast for the Senses. Organiser Amme Hiser says that

they managed to attract a whopping 3500 people last year, and she hopes that numbers this year will be just as healthy. “This year we have chosen to raise well-needed funds for Project Jonah. We approached them with the idea as it was something that we wanted to get behind,” she says. “After the February stranding they are particularly relevant to our local community.” Once again there will be plenty of food, crafts, entertainment, hot mulled apple juice, treats for the kids, and all the eateries will be open.

“And also, because it starts at 4:30pm, it is very family-friendly,” adds Amme. “It’s just nice for people to come out in the middle of winter, because everyone seems to hibernate.” She says that this year’s theme – Polkadots and Parasols – was just “a bit of fun”, and she hopes it will bring some colour to the night. “And, if it rains, at least you’ll have your parasol to keep you dry.” The Nelson Midwinter Night Market is on this Friday, June 30, 4:30pm – 8:00pm in Morrison Square, rain or shine.

Next month, four young Nelsonians from T.S. Talisman Sea Cadets will set off on a two-week adventure, sailing the 65-foot yacht Sh’Khinah from New Zealand to Suva, Fiji. Over the course of the expedition the crew, which is made up of students aged 13-18, will participate in ground-breaking research, becoming ‘Plankonauts’ and collecting/working with samples of plankton from the waters of the Pacific. The Sea Cadet crew partnered with Dr. Xavier Pochin of the Cawthron Institute who has been training them in how to handle the special sampling kits, pro-

vided through the international participative science program, Plankton Planet. The specimens collected by the crew will later be analysed with the help of the Cawthron Institute to help identify new species of plankton and determine the effects that climate change has on them. Joining the four sea cadets on board will be a member of the Sea Scout Venturers, Luca Ware, as well as Kat Holmes who was previously ships mate on T.S. Talisman’s last major voyage to New Caledonia in 2010, social media coordinator Stephanie Chitty, who will be documenting their journey and Milo Col-

As well as taking plankton samples, the crew will also log environmental data including water temperature, salinity, wind speed and direction, and once they have arrived in Fiji, the crew will spend time

Judene Edgar Cancer is not generally considered a “polite topic of conversation” over your morning cuppa, but for the members of the Nelson Haematology Support Group, it’s a critical part of life and living. The support group was born out of the need to help “normalise” the inevitable journey that people diagnosed with incurable blood and bone cancers, such as leukaemia and myeloma, face. Founding member Graham Sturgess says that “you can feel awfully isolated ... living with a death threat over your head”. There is no cure, so “we’re just on hold for as long as we can be – that makes it a little bit different”, says fellow support group member Lloyd Kennedy. Despite having a terminal condition, talk of death isn’t common-place. Support group member Rita Tyrie emphasises that a key focus of the group is about supporting you to “live as best as you can, while you can”. Blood and bone cancers are often incredibly rare, meaning that, for many patients, sometimes there is no one else in the region with the same condition.

While they discuss anything from stem cell transplants to wheatgrass, overseas medications to physiotherapy treatments, Lloyd says that “sometimes you just need to speak to someone else – someone who isn’t a nurse or doctor”. “Being able to talk to others, hear about what they do to stabilise [their heath] is so very important. There’s nothing like the support of people who’ve been there or who are going through it,” says Lloyd. Graham and Lloyd first met at the quarterly education sessions run by the Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand, but

The backboards are damaged and beaten up, one of the hoops has been half ripped off, there are no lines, and rubbish blows around the Jack Robins Stadium’s outdoor community basketball court. But not for long. After several years of abuse, the Nelson Basketball Association's outdoor court in Stoke is set to get a reviving facelift thanks to a group of local volunteers donating time and new equipment. General manager of the association, Frances Tilly, says she was absolutely surprised and blown away when basketball volunteer Heather Walker told her she was going to fix up the court. “Like a lot of grass roots sports we’re struggling for volunteers, so to have ours come along and say, ‘hey, I want to get this underway for everyone’, is just fantastic. These guys are all worth their

weight in gold.” Heather, who is spearheading the effort, approached the New Gate Company who fixed the gigantic fence a fortnight ago. Meanwhile, Nayland College students are creating new backboards, and new hoops and chain nets have arrived, ready to be strung up. Despite being run-down and damaged, Frances says they still get a good number of people playing on the court everyday. She is excited to watch it turn into a fun basketball hub for the community. “A massive part of basketball culture started with street ball and playing outside on the concrete with friends,” she says. “So it’ll be great to see even more people out there with a bit of music on, throwing a basketball around and having fun.” The court is open from 8am until 6pm during winter. The Nelson Orienteering Club’s mid-week winter rogaine series is getting hundreds of people off the couch on these dark, cold Wednesday nights and out running and walking on the streets and bush tracks around Nelson. There have already been three of the four rogaines and, with just one more to go at Tahunanui on Wednesday, the club has been amazed by the popularity of the series. Around 150 people competed in last Wednesday’s rogaine around the Grampians and club president Dave Mangnall says it’s been great for the sport and, also, the club’s mapping programme. “We use the proceeds from the night rogaine series to help pay for our mapping programme so we’re pleased we’re getting such good numbers,” Dave says. “We always need to update our maps as the features change and put out some new maps, and that costs money.” Dave says the maps are initially

updated using satellite imagery to identify any changes in features such as new buildings or tracks. The changes are “field checked” by club volunteers using GPS technology that “talks to a software system” before they are mapped. Although there are some very experienced orienteers competing in the night rogaine series, Dave says one of its big appeals is that it is family-friendly with plenty of parents and their children coming along. “The younger kids seem to really enjoy it. You often see the mum or dad with the map doing the navigating and the children running along with the clue sheets checking off the clues – it’s like a big treasure hunt.” The final round of the night rogaine series is being held at Tahunanui on Wednesday. The Nelson Speedway Club has been recognised as the “Best Club-Promoted Track in NZ” at the annual Speedway New Zealand awards held earlier this month. The Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway was finalists for several awards including best promotional event with the NZ Midget car title. While they missed out on that award they did pick up the “Best Promotional item” award with their NZ Midget Championship T-Shirt. It was the icing on the cake for out-going president Wayne Martin, bringing the trophies home for the clubs AGM. He says it’s been a hard task over the past year with wet weather, a fire, rebuilds and noise issues making it a challenging season behind the scenes. But with new long term sponsorship confirmed, the running of two successful national titles and continued improvements around the track, the club is in good shape. The new website and improved track programme gave punters a

There wouldn't be many rugby coaches who cast an eye over to their back line when looking to fill a hole in the middle of their front row, . But that's exactly what Galbraith Nelson coaches Kade Heke and Chris Pugh did when they turned their second five eight into a hooker. Chris Kerslake usually pulls on the number 12 jersey when he plays senior rugby, but an injury crisis at hooker has meant he's swapped that for a number 2 over the past month. Not that he minds.

"First time I had to play it, in the final against Waimea, I was a bit nervous, but after the first couple of scrums I felt quite comfortable with it. I’m not a front row forward, but I have enjoyed it." He says, when it was obvious the team had a problem finding a hooker he offered himself and it's been a steep learning curve since. "It's given me an appreciation of what they do. I did two weeks of line outs, but one of our props can throw in so he’s

been doing it the last couple of weeks. Learning line out calls a couple of days before the game was pretty tough." Chris, the team's co-captain along with Ethan Blackadder, says he has played in the forwards "years ago and certainly not at this level". Nelson's 29-27 loss to Kahurangi on the weekend might have been his last in the front row though, with regular hooker Brendon Asuma-Goodman targeting a return against

Marist at Trafalgar Park this weekend. Co-coach Chris Pugh says the team has been struggling with injuries after losing eight players in the Tasman Trophy final three weeks ago. "On Saturday we had a very makeshift back line and that's where they made big inroads." Nelson are still top of the Car Company division one standings with Wanderers in second, Waimea third and Marist fourth.
