Nelson City Council has no business using ratepayers money to subsidise an increasingly dwindling golfing population, says the Nelson Residents’ Association. “The course competes with struggling, un-subsidised private clubs,” says association spokesperson Steve Cross. “It costs something like $1200 per member per year in ratepayer subsidy.” Nelson City Council has owned Waahi Taakaro Golf Club in the Maitai Valley for many decades. However, Steve’s comments come in the wake of Auckland Council’s de-

cision to cut one of its courses in half to make way for other community and sporting developments. The High Court upheld the council’s decision to turn Chamberlain Park from an 18-hole course into a 9-hole course. In its place will be a new aquatic centre, playground, cycleways and two artificial turf sports fields. Steve wonders how much longer the Nelson City Council can justify the spend on what is only benefitting a small number of citizens. “It certainly seems time that rationale for continued spending for the sake of a few was revis-

ited but of course NCC has great trouble taking the politically hard decisions.” As part of a memorandum of understanding between the Nelson City Council and the golf course, the course was required to increase membership over the last five years. However, it currently only has 150 members, down slightly from three years ago and from about 250 at its height. The council has a funding and revenue target for the course of users meeting a minimum of 50 percent of the costs of running the course, with ratepayers meeting the balance. As part of that MOU, both parties agree to: “Monitor usage and review future best use of area if user numbers do not increase as targeted.” The council’s community facili-

The plan says that one of its key issues is asking whether “there is a better use in the longer term for this 31 hectares of reserve land.” Councillor Tim Skinner, who is chair of the sport and recreation committee, says looking at the

golf course was not part of the council’s agenda and it was not part of any long term plan submissions. He says the golf course is accommodating of other people using it, such as runners and mountain bikers. “The course isn’t more subsidised for anything else. Players pay their way for it.” However, he says that he will look at Auckland’s Chamberlain Park decision with interest.

Waahi Taakarao golf club vice president Richard Pearson says he sees the club’s future as being much more promising than it has in a long time. It is coming up to a year where it has run the course by itself on a day-to-day basis, rather than relying on a contractor. “It’s going really well. Revenue is good.” He says that the club has opened up the doors for more competitions, allowing anyone to come and play. “What’s the difference between the council owning a golf course and it owning Trafalgar Park? Nothing. It’s an asset that is pretty valuable to the whole community.” Its financials were with the auditor and it would soon see what its outlook was for the future, but right now, “Things are looking very good.”

Charles Anderson A secondary school student’s speech advocating speaking out about mental health was rejected by her school for being inappropriate. Kira Evenden, 14, says she was inspired to put forward a speech for Garin College’s annual arts festival Mahi Toi. She wanted to talk about mental health, something that was close to her heart. She had been diagnosed with depression and could not understand why talking openly about it was such a problem. “I like people knowing that it is ok,” Kira says. “I’ve never got why it’s such a secret.” She thought the statistics backed up her position – two people will die and 20 hospitalised in New Zealand each week due to mental health related issues. “That’s just horrible and I needed to say it.” She wrote about how mental health was not in the curriculum and how it was difficult to speak about these issues. “You’d think with mental health issues being this common there would be some education around it, right? … But no it’s not even in the curriculum … how are [people] supposed to ask for help when we

Then

someone suggested giving them to local kindergartens,” he says. “We wanted to start with Victory, as it’s our local kindergarten, but we’ll continue to roll it out across Nelson. We really like that we are giving back to the community.” Head Teacher Donna Bishop says they are always working on bike safety and having some good quality bikes and helmets will make a huge difference. “For us it is about generosity and recognising that not all families are able to provide, or even access, bikes. It means we can extend on children’s physical skills and generally have lots of fun,” she says. “It’s also about community and how a local business has seen a need and wants to help, not only our community, but others as well.”

Punters hoping to secure their seats for Nelson’s inaugural All Black test are being warned to go through the official channels after a man was slapped with almost $200 in booking fees. Like many local parents, Andy Marr plans to take his children to see the greatest rugby team on the planet when the All Blacks come to town in September. However, the Nelson man was shocked to discover hidden booking fees when trying to purchase tickets on a resale website, Viagogo. “I did a Google search for AB tickets and the first result was ‘Viagogo,’ I looked at the ‘take a kid to footy’ packages, initially I wanted to take my whole family, (wife and three kids) but, looking at the prices, that was going to be pretty extreme.” Andy says tickets on the website were advertised at $216. “I thought I’d check with my wife to see what we were actually happy to pay to take the kids to a game of rugby and then tried to purchase two tickets for my son and myself.” However, upon transaction, Andy was told he had exceeded

Photo: Supplied. his credit limit. “I checked the price thinking I must have selected too many tickets, but I saw there was a booking fee of $86 per ticket.” The cost of Andy’s tickets had risen from $432 for two, to more than $600. “I cancelled the transaction and wasn’t particularly looking forward to having that conversation with my son.” Andy also looked into the possibility of taking his boys to a test in Wellington, but again booking fees on Viagogo were over almost $50 per ticket. “The booking fee isn’t advertised anywhere, it’s completely disingenuous.” Andy posted his disappointed to Facebook where a friend suggested he try allblacks.com

“I went on there and managed to get three tickets at $120 each behind the goal posts, so I can take both of my boys to the game.” Andy says the booking fee on allblacks.com was negligible. “It wasn’t an issue.” Tasman Rugby Union commercial and marketing manager, Les Edwards, has warned punters to go through the official avenues to buy tickets. “We want people to go through the right channel of the All Blacks website and not use resale sites. Les says fans who have bought through resale sites have had issues at both the Auckland and Wellington tests against France. “The only way to guarantee your seat is to go through allblacks.com, Beggs Musicworks, (264 Hardy St) or at the i-SITE (77 Trafalgar St).” Les says he knows of a number of locals who have been caught out on re-sale sites. Te reo resurgence Locally Owned and Operated

Jonty Dine Te reo Maori is undergoing a resurgence in the region, say local schools which have a record number of people enrolled to learn the language. Te reo teacher Christine Piper says the significant rise in Nelson is mirrored around the country and she says the increase in learners is coming predominantly from the non-Maori population. “About 60 per cent of our learners are non-Maori.” And she’s confident this trend will continue. “You see this in discussions whether it should be compulsory at schools and te reo signage happening around the country.” Christine says her organisation, Te Atarangi Te Tauhi, has been at capacity for new te reo learners. “We have over 250 students enrolled in classes across the region.” She says, recently, they have had to turn students away. Christine says initiative is about encouraging te reo to become normalised. NMIT te reo tutor Craig Shepard says it also has high numbers and says increased media coverage

Gender Equal NZ has called for an end to the country's “rape culture” after a Nelson lawyer suggested that three girls who were secretly photographed by his client on a beach should not have been wearing bikinis. Graham Thomas Rowe, 61, has had an indecency conviction, for taking surreptitious photos of three girls aged 12-15 in their bikinis at Kaiteriteri Beach, quashed by the Supreme Court. Rowe's lawyer Steven Zindel said in defence of his client: "If they don't want to be snapped they should not wear that on the beach”. National Council of Women chief executive and Gender Equal NZ Spokesperson Gill Greer says Zindel’s comment highlights what is known as ‘rape culture.’ "Rape culture is a culture where we normalise sexual violence. From rape jokes, locker room ‘banter’ and victim blaming, through to catcalling, non-consensual sexual photos, to sexual coercion and rape.” Gill says Zindel’s comment falls at the lower end of the continuum, but it contributes to a culture which we should all be ashamed of. "Part of the problem is what we think of as normal, what we are willing to let slide. In a rape culture what the victim wore, consumed, said, and how they acted is questioned and scrutinised.” New Zealand has among the highest rates of domestic and sexual violence in the OECD. "We need to do all we can to stop sexual violence – by stopping the

Photo: Supplied. people doing it, by stopping the people excusing it and by shifting the focus from victim blaming.” Results from its recent Gender Attitudes Survey show 15 per cent of New Zealanders think if someone is raped when they’re drunk they’re at least partly responsible. "We need to put the responsibility for the crime on the person who committed it and not on the person targeted. There is nothing anyone could do or not do that could ‘cause’ a sexual assault, harassment, intimate partner violence, or stalking to happen.” Gill says there a range of ways that we can work to dismantle rape culture. "For example, we can reject traditional gender norms that encourage victim blaming and stereotypes about violent masculinity. We can support consent education and we can learn that not everything we see and read in the media is an accurate portrayal.” Gill says we need to stop making comments around what women should and shouldn't do, and instead we need to focus on changing our culture.

Stay safe around power lines when doing jobs at your place If you’re catching up on home maintenance but working around electricity there are a few things to watch out for. Any work around electricity lines can be dangerous. Here are some important tips to help you stay safe while you do common jobs around your property.

Appo’s life on film Charles Anderson Local filmmaker Keith Hawke knew nothing of Appo Hocton before he started a project documenting his life. “He struck me as being very interesting and very relevant,” Keith says. Appo, first known as Wong Ah Poo Hoc Ting, was the first naturalised Chinese New Zealander, who arrived in New Zealand in 1842 after jumping ship. He deserted his vessel while it was berthed in the colony of Nelson. He stayed in Nelson, becoming the first Chinese immigrant in New Zealand. He became

a housekeeper then set up his own business tendering for construction work. He was an alien so could not purchase property but then applied to become naturalised. He bought land in Washington Road and what became Hastings Street, and built houses, living in one and leasing the others. He then built homes out in Dovedale and also married two different European women. Appo was highly regarded as a Nelson pioneer and was one of 84 who attended a settlers’ luncheon to mark Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee in 1887. “It was a really fun project,” says Keith, who travelled to

Guangzhou in China to try and track down where Appo was born. “I couldn’t find it. We found the area but the likelihood is that his village was swallowed up with all the development.” By the turn of the new millennium he had 1600 living descendants throughout the country. The project was funded by the Chinese Poll Tax Heritage Trust, which was set up as part of a government apology to the early settler Chinese community for imposing a poll tax on them. POWER LINES SAFETY FOR OUTDOOR MAINTENANCE If you’re checking or cleaning gutters and downpipes, painting the roof or eaves, or doing a job anywhere near the connection of the power lines to your house it’s important to know what to do to stay safe. Sometimes the power line can cross your property and drop quite low, or go across other structures such as a garage or a shed. Be aware of the location of the service line to your home when you’re planning how to do a job. If you’re planting trees, building fences or doing jobs on something tall in your driveway it’s always important to look up and around you to see where power lines are and keep away from them. Mike Beever is a man of many musical talents. The UK born producer and piano tuner helped rock legends Coldplay find their way into the charts and has written numerous tunes for TV, radio and film. Now he calls Nelson home, making sure the ivories around the region are sounding sweet, and this Saturday will be performing at Forbidden Radio’s live broadcast at Founders. Mike made the move to New Zealand 15 years ago after purchasing a piano tuning business in Nelson. There are just two piano tuners in the Top of the South, and he sees up to 700 clients a year, including the Nelson Centre of Musical Arts, various colleges and piano teachers. The son of a church organist, Mike left school at 16 to study piano technology and tuning in Leeds. After convincing himself it was

an “old man’s profession”, he joined a touring rock band. During this time he learned the skills of recording and production and ended up as a house engineer at Station Studios in London. One day in 1999, an unknown band by the name of Coldplay turned up to record one of their early EPs, ‘Brothers & Sisters’. “I spent three days in the studio with them and it was a really cool experience. I remember driving them to a gig and only five people turned up to watch them,” says Mike. In 2016 - almost 20 years later - Mike rubbed shoulders again with the multi award-winning band at their Auckland concert as a VIP guest. “I chatted with them in their dressing room and at the after party I sat there eating sushi with Chris Martin and Neil Finn,” says Mike. “It was pretty surreal.” When he’s not tuning pianos, you’ll find Mike at his Nelson home, writing music for production libraries that go on to be used in TV, cinema, and radio.

spotted by my mother-in-law,” he says. “You never know where they’re going to go.” This Saturday, Mike will be the pianist for the Forbidden Radio Fresh FM fundraiser at Founders. It’s the second live theatre, live audience and live broadcast radio drama after the success of their first sold-out show in April. This time the crew will be performing The Lone Ranger radio classic ‘Fear’, along with 1949 drama ‘Richard Diamond Private Detective: The Leland Gibson Murder’. Mike says he’s looking forward to what will be a rare live performance from him. “It’s all really improvised and I’ll be helping to create the atmosphere, intrigue, suspense and ambience. “Thinking about all I’ve done, I would never swap New Zealand for a life in London.” Forbidden Radio is on at The Granary at Founders, this Saturday, 30 June, at 7pm. Tickets are $15 and available from Beggs Musicworks, Richmond Mall or Fresh FM.

The Nelson Tasman Hospice received another financial boost last week. Members of the Nelson Bays Harmony Chorus were on hand to deliver the cheque for $2800 to Nelson Tasman Hospice marketing and fundraising manager Paul McIntyre. The donations came from funds raised from a concert at the All Saints Church auditorium on May 19. About 250 people packed the

church for the performance. Carol Brown says the group has been together for over twenty years, singing unaccompanied barbershop-style songs from the 1920s till today. “A lot of members of our group have a personal connection to hospice and we wanted to raise money for the new facility.” Paul says the Hospice are still looking to raise $1.5 million and every bit helps as they look to open the new facility in March, 2019.

Mayor honours PM’s baby with donation Nelson Mayor Rachel Reese has honoured the birth of Prime Minister Jacinda Arden’s daughter with a donation of $1000 to Women’s Refuge. “On behalf of Nelson City, I would like to convey my heartfelt congratulations to our Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and her partner Clarke Gayford on the birth of their baby girl,” she said in a media statement on Friday. Ardern welcomed her daughter into the world on Thursday and introduced her to the public on Sunday. Her name is Neve Te Aroha Ardern Gayford. “In honour of this momentous occasion, I will be acknowledging the birth with a donation from the Mayor’s fund of $1000 to Women’s Refuge,” said Rachel. “This reflects the generosity of spirit of the Prime Minister in making sure that all New Zealanders deserve the best support possible.” Rachel says that as the first female mayor of one of New Zealand’s oldest cities, and as a mother herself, she wanted to celebrate this milestone of women in leadership. “In this 125th anniversary year of suffrage, since New Zealand led the world as the first country to afford women the right to vote, it is a great delight that our Prime Minister can normalise the role of women as parents, workers, and leaders.”

Your Voice Nick Smith column: Nelson MP Nick Smith wrongly claims in his weekly column (19.6.2018) that Nelson will be poorer under a Labour-led government. In fact, we are seeing the opposite, with many examples of incomes rising in Nelson since the change of government. Labour’s Health Minister David Clark announced last week that hard-working mental health support workers in Nelson will be entitled to increases of around $3 per hour for the important work they do in our community. The Minimum Wage has had its largest increase in 10 years. This increase, and plans to progressively increase the Minimum Wage to $20 in 2021, will benefit many workers in hospitality, retail and service industries in Nelson. Meanwhile, local union organisers have been going about their business of negotiating good wage increases with Nelson employers. Despite the scaremongering from our local MP, the vast majority of union-negotiated Collective Agreements happen in good faith and without the need for industrial action. Given that the Labour-led government is yet to implement any changes to employment law, any Industrial Action that is occurring is happening under National’s employment laws that Nick Smith and his colleagues voted for. I’m delighted that local health drink entrepreneurs Chloe and Florence van Dyke from CHIA have become Nelson’s first accredited Living Wage employers. Chloe and Florence are

setting an example for other Nelson employers, that valuing your employees through decent wages is a great way to do business. On 1 July, many Nelson families will receive increases to Family Tax Credits and the Accommodation Supplement, and the Winter Energy and Best Start payments. As Labour’s candidate in Nelson in 2017, I spoke to many workers who wanted to see the end of sunshine wages, and real changes to improve incomes for hard working Nelson families. It’s great to see those changes starting to roll out. Nelson Matters National took the right step last week in giving bi-partisan support to the Government for establishing a Climate Change Commission. It is the next logical step for New Zealand in tackling this global problem. The science behind the climate change issue is that human activities are increasing the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, warming the temperature and changing weather patterns. NZ contributes only 0.2% of global emissions with the big emitters being China and the US. Anything we do will only have a small effect. However, our emissions per person are high. We need to do our

fair share and work with other nations to get emissions down. National took ten important steps on climate change during our nine years in government. We insulated 320,000 homes. We increased the proportion of renewable electricity from 65% to 85%. We electrified Auckland’s trains and introduced incentives for electric cars. We established the national network of cycleways and reduced emissions from land fill by collecting and using the methane. We set the phase out plan for HFC gases used in our refrigerators and heat pumps. We initiated the $250 million global research alliance to find solutions to reduc-

ing emissions from agriculture. The most controversial step was introducing a cost on emissions with the Emission Trading Scheme. We started with a 50% obligation in 2010 but then we ramped it up to 100% as the economy recovered from the GFC. Our most important success was in helping secure the Paris Agreement in 2016. I spent years working as Climate Change and Environment Minister with New Zealand’s diplomats helping get both developed and developing countries to commit to reduce emissions. New Zealand’s obligation is a 30% reduction in emissions by

It is no good shutting down industries like dairy, meat, steel, cement, methanol or aluminium in New Zealand if production is trans-

ferred to other countries that are less efficient A Climate Change Commission will help us meet our Paris targets by setting emission budgets and a timetable for reductions. Cross party support will also help business plan for the long term. I would encourage Nelsonians to attend the public meeting on the Commission proposal with Climate Change Minister James Shaw at Old Saint Johns next Tuesday 3 July 5pm-7pm. Welcome to the boing boing gloop machines Nelsonians will be invited to make the gloop “gloop” as part of this year’s Light Nelson. One of a small number of invited artists is Auckland-based Jon Baxter, who has been creating media for film, installations, events, museums and television for over 20 years. He will be bringing his “Boing Boing Gloop Machines” where audiences are invited to pull a rope that is attached to lycra. A light display on the material responds to the movement along with making sounds. Kinect cameras inside the drums read the height of the lycra as you pull the rope. As the height of the lycra changes so do the sounds and visuals. Now in its fourth year, Light Nelson is a five-day light festival that has quickly become one of Nelson’s largest and favourite free, biennial events, attracting more than 55,000 visitors in its last outing in 2016. Project manager Sophie Kelly says it’s incredible how quickly Light Nelson has become a key event on the region’s event calendar. “It’s a fantastic project that features hundreds of incredible artists and creatives, some very generous supporters, and, of course, tens of thousands of visitors.”

Auckland-based Jon Baxter is bringing his interactive light displays to Light Nelson.

Through his company Perceptual Engineering, Jon is a leader of projection mapping in New Zealand. In Light Nelson 2016, Jon’s projections on to NMIT’s old technical institute building in

Hardy Street were a firm favourite, and one of the most-videoed and photographed installations. He will also return to the same site, with a new set of digital mapping that will once again

paint one of our beloved wooden building with new illuminations and imagery. “Be sure to look out for references to one of New Zealand’s most notorious trials of the 19th century,

that of the Burgess Gang for the Maungatapu murders,” Sophie says. Light Nelson takes place from July 6-10 at the Queens Gardens and NMIT.

Zoe wants to meet with minister

A local mental health campaigner wants to meet with the health minister to personally deliver a petition of almost 2000 signatures looking to save Nelson's after-hours specialist youth crisis service. Zoe Palmer, 18, has gathered more than 1900 signatures over Nelson Marlborough Health’s proposed changes to the on-call Child and Adolescent Mental

Health Service crisis team. She wrote to Health Minister David Clark, seeking a meeting to present the petition she has gathered supporting the keeping of the city's specialist after-hours Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS). Under the review, the after-hours CAMHS team, which provides specialist help to young people at risk, would be replaced by a more general team. "I would also like to meet with

Hospital shuttle buggy claims award: The Nelson Hospital Shuttle Buggy service has won an award. It was runner-up in the Health Care Provider Service Team Volunteers category of the 2018 Minister of Health volunteer awards, presented at the Grand Hall Parliament during National Volunteer Week. The service is the brainchild of Kathy Cuthbert, who noticed the struggles of the unwell and elderly who had to navigate Nelson Hospital’s hillside carpark. It has been running since 2006 and racked up nearly 25,000 buggy hours. Last year, around 7,500 passengers travelled on the buggy. Comfrey home for Jekyll and Hyde Concert to celebrate Kate Russell

A Nelson actor is returning home to perform in the debut play for the revamped Nelson School of Music. Comfrey Sanders and her fellow performers, Andrew Paterson, Jack Buchanan, Susie Berry and Jonathan Price, are bringing the modern adaptation of Jekyll and Hyde to the Nelson Centre of Musical Arts on 3 July. The 25-year-old says she grew up performing in musicals at the venue and is excited to be making her return. “I haven’t seen the venue since it has been revamped, but I used to do a lot of performing in that space with the Nelson Youth Theatre Company.” Comfrey moved to Nelson from the UK when she was seven and attended Hira School, Nelson Intermediate School and Nelson College for Girls. She moved to Wellington when she was 18 to study at Toi Whakaari, and has been based in Auckland for the past four years at her drama

Of all the European cities prominent in the world of classical music during the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries, Vienna stands out for its depth of composedly talent, says Nelson Symphony Orchestra chair Richard Wells. So, it makes sense that the orchestra will take it on as part of its upcoming concert. On June 30 the NSO will perform “Vienna” in the Nelson Centre of Musical Arts, featuring five works by Vienna’s greatest composers. “These range from the superbly refined classicism of Haydn and Mozart to the lush romanticism of Mahler and Brahms,” says Richard. The concert commences with the well-known “Rosamunde” overture by Schubert followed by the scintillating violin concerto in D major by Mozart with soloist John Thomson, the orchestra’s concert master. Before the first half concludes, the orchestra will perform Gustav Mahler’s celebrated “Adagietto” from his monumental 5th symphony. “This beautiful piece for strings and harp was the haunting film music for “Death in Venice” in the early 1970s,” Richard says. After the interval, the Nelson Symphony Orchestra will perform Brahms’s well-known “Academic Festival Overture”. Brahms made use of several student songs including “Gaudeamus Igitur” in this overture. The Nelson Symphony Orchestra is conducted by John Rimmer and features violin concerto soloist John Thomson. The concert is at 7.30pm on 30 June at the NCMA.

Comfrey says their rendition of Jekyll and Hyde is “loosely” based on the 19th century novel by Robert Louis Stevenson about Dr. Henry Jekyll and his beast within, Mr. Edward Hyde. “It's told through actors pretending to be part of a French touring

company. Dr Jekyll is a very revolutionary doctor and he does all sorts of naughty things. It has been described as kids’ theatre but for adults, with alcohol and sex, so expect the unexpected.” Nelson is the first stop in the South Island leg of the tour and she says she is expecting plenty of supporters in the audience, including family, friends and teachers. The play has toured through New Plymouth, Hamilton,

Rotorua, Tauranga, Hastings and Palmerston North. After Nelson it will head to Christchurch and Oamaru, before finishing in Dunedin. Nelson sailor wins ocean race Andrew Board Nelson sailor Daryl Wislang has won his second Volvo Ocean Race in dramatic fashion. The 37 year-old former Nelson Yacht Club member was the watch captain on the Chinese-backed Dongfeng Race Team boat. Heading into the final threeday leg of the round-theworld race, from Sweden to The Netherlands over the weekend, Daryl’s team was

in a three-way sprint for the overall race win. Dongfeng took a different route to the other two teams and was rewarded with the stage victory and the overall race. Remarkably, it was the team's first stage win of the race. It is the second win for Daryl after he won the prestigious race on-board Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing in 2015. Daryl told the Nelson Weekly back in January that winning the title was his goal.

“That’s why I joined this team. On paper it was going to be strong team, they started early, they had the budget and time was on our side.” But the win was by the slimmest of margins, just 16 minutes, the closest in the race’s history. The 37-year-old father of two told the Weekly that his next goal is the America’s Cup. “I’d like to give the America’s Cup a crack. It’s something that I haven’t competed in and it's in New Zealand next

The Premier Invitational Cup was set up in 2012 by Magic United TFA to bring junior football players together for a festival of football on the Gold Coast. Nelson is fast becoming New Zealand’s mountain biking capital and the city has just scored a massive coup to enhance that reputation. Nelson will host a four-day round of the renowned Enduro World Series next year, the Aorere Enduro. Club spokesman Paul Jennings says he is delighted to announce a brand-new, bigger, better and tougher enduro than ever. "We're really excited about introducing some of the world's best riders to our awesome trails." The Aorere Enduro will double as round three of the EWS Asia-Pacific Enduro Series and will run from February 7-10, 2019. The series, announced earlier this year, has expanded to four rounds, with two of New Zealand’s most iconic mountain biking destinations, Nelson and Christchurch, being welcomed into the fold. A last-minute penalty saw Stoke squander the chance to enter the top four in the NPD Tasman Trophy, going down 27-25 to Renwick in a thriller at Greenmeadows on Saturday. The round nine clash epitomised the 'game of two halves' cliche, the Eagles conceding a 15-point first half lead to remain just outside semi-final contention. The hosts were without industrious openside Anty Burnett and centre Rupena Parkinson, stretching Stoke's stocks. Brian Bennett had the first chance at points, pushing his penalty shot wide before second five Charlie Chambers broke Stoke's bagel after some mesmerising interplay.

Both sides showed some scintillating enterprise on attack and were each denied potential 'tries of the season', Renwick by a knock on and Stoke by the touchline. Tomas Aoake and lock Isei Lewaqai were both lethal with the ball in hand for Stoke, running riot through the Renwick defence. Naisa Taufa had a golden opportunity to put Renwick on the board, but the unmarked flanker spilt the pill with the line in sight. Brad Pool then scored Stoke's second after Lewaqai broke up the middle of the field from the base of the ruck, Stoke showed patience and shifted wide to the openside who crashed over in the left corner. Jack Grooby missed the conversion but stretched the lead to 15 soon after with a penalty from right in front, as Renwick failed to register a point in the first forty. Stoke's dominance continued at the start of the second half as a long-range penalty attempt from Grooby fell just short of the crossbar, only for Chambers to charge the ensuing clearance and score his second try of the afternoon. Taufa finally got Renwick on the board, making up for his earlier blunder by scoring off the back of

powerful surge from centre Michael Vaenoa. Vaenoa dotted down for the visitor's second soon after, racing down the right flank to make it 22-12. Grooby extended Stoke’s advantage with his second penalty goal, however, Renwick's backs were starting to cut the hosts defence apart. Vaenoa’s stellar second half continued, brushing away several tacklers to complete a blistering

brace and bring Renwick within striking distance. Renwick's attack clicked into gear, only Stoke skipper Sam Chamberlain's desperate scrambling defence denying powerful winger Kavekini Tabu. Renwick had several chances to steal the lead but couldn't make their final passes stick until halfback Chris Bolton dived over from the base to bring Renwick within two. Bennett had the chance to take the lead for the first time in the game, but pushed the conversion wide. The green machine continued to hammer away at Stoke's

defence until the home side were eventually penalised at the ruck in front of their own sticks. Bennett nailed the penalty to break Stoke's hearts and hand the Nelson sub-union champions their fourth loss of the season. The Stoke captain says he was very disappointed to let it slip away. "We just couldn't get across the line today. Full credit to Renwick, they came back strongly at the end there and thoroughly deserve the win." He says they lost their structure in the second and may have been guilty of switching off at times. "We will learn from this one." The gutsy fullback says they will not use their understrength squad as an excuse. "It's what we pride ourselves on, we back our depth, we will use this as motivation for the next two games and try to get back in that top four."

In other results, Waimea Old Boys defeated Waitohi 42-34 in a high-scoring affair at Jubilee Park while Wanderers sneaked home against Central 36-33. Nelson remains at the top of the table after beating East Coast 4429 and Kahurangi enjoyed a 3514 win over Moutere. Marist had the bye.

A new netball variation has been introduced in Nelson to help cater for players whose joints can no longer handle the stress of the fast-paced game. The ‘Walking Netball’ league got underway at Saxton Stadium last week. Nelson Netball operations and financial officer Arnella King says the centre began the initiative

after looking at ways to expand community involvement in the game. “It was great we had about eight people turn up for the first session, so we got a half court game going and there were a lot of laughs.” Arnella says a range of ages turned up on Tuesday, the oldest of whom was 82-years-old. “She was highly competitive for 82. She was so competitive that

she had a bit of a fall running to get the ball instead of walking because she didn’t want it to go out.” Arnella says no matter what age you are, you don’t lose your competitive spirit. “We are calling it ‘wiggle and giggle’ and there was definitely lots of that.” Walking netball has been run overseas and in some of the largest netball centres in the country. “We have run off the back of that

after seeing how successful its been in those places.” Arnella says the centre wanted to find a way to keep people active and involved in the sport. “With walking netball there is no running or jumping so the stress and impact on the body is a lot less.” She says they received some great feedback following the first session. “They said they couldn’t wait to tell their friends and bring them along.”

Suburbs prepare for inaugural southern league Jonty Dine After a mixed Mainland Premier League campaign, Nelson Suburbs will look to bounce back as the inaugural Southern Football League kicks off this weekend. The side will open its Southern League season this Sunday at Saxton Field against Coastal Spirit FC, after defeating Rangers AFC on Saturday to advance to the fourth round of the Chatham Cup. An Eddie Sillars goal proved the difference in Marlborough, as Nelson edged the spirited Rangers 1-0 on a sodden pitch at A and P Park. Suburbs coach Steve Bignall was happy to leave A and P Park with the win, but generally unimpressed by the level of football his side produced. "I thought Rangers played really well, made some good chances … we performed poorly. But it was always going to be a bit of a slog

on that pitch. We were probably guilty of trying to play too much football at times.” As the side await its Chatham Cup fate, the focus now shifts to the first round of the SFL. Suburbs player/coach Ben Wright says the new league is something New Zealand Football had to do to keep the game moving forward. He says the side are fizzing at the prospect of new opposition. “For us as coaches and players, it’s great to be playing against different teams, we are really looking forward to it.” Suburbs finished the Mainland Premier League in fourth on 24 points, 12 shy of champions Cashmere Technical. Mother and daughter combo play for premier netball team Jacks Navy Jacks netballers Emma and Natasha Bannister have been instrumental in taking their side to premier division this season. The mother/daughter duo have previously played in division two sides together, but made their premier netball debut after Jacks Navy’s mid-season promotion. “I wasn’t really up to playing premier again, so mum said ‘just come play for us, we will just be a fun team,’ and then somehow we ended up playing prems,” Natasha says. The 19-year-old goal defence played for Stoke in 2017, but made the move to Jacks to play alongside her long-time coach and mentor. “Since I started netball she’s been my coach, for about ten years, so playing alongside her is pretty cool.” Emma says that the side put an emphasis on just going out and enjoying the experience. “The whole team has gone in with
