Last stop for Stoke loop Charles Anderson Whenever Barbara Minnitt wants to go anywhere she walks out the back gate of Summerset Village, crosses Nayland Rd and hails down a bus that appears every half an hour. But come June 30 the bus service, which has run for two years, will stop. Barbara, 75, says it will leave her, and a host of other regular users, stranded. “It would be regrettable to see it go. It’s great for the older population. They talk about people being socially isolated and if they can’t get out and about what’s going to happen?” The Weekly hopped aboard the service with Barbara last week to speak to those directly affected. “I think it’s disgusting, to be honest,” says 87-year-old Margaret Farish.

“It’s just a pity more people don’t know about it.” Margaret uses the bus twice a week for shopping. She says it’s vital for her day to day life. Margaret says she would complain to council but her mind isn’t what it used to be and she struggles to concentrate for long periods of time. But when the service finishes she will have to walk 15 minutes to the nearest bus stop in the height of winter. “That’s not a good result by anyone’s standards,” she says. One bus driver, who does not want to be named, says the closing of the service, with nothing to replace it, does not make any sense. “When they first did the sums on it, it can’t have been to make a profit. It’s a service.” He says the Stoke Loop has

The Returned Service Association is pushing for changes to the Veterans’ Support Act after the Nelson Weekly publicised the plight of Commonwealth veterans left in the lurch by the current legislation. Nelson RSA president Barry Pont met with Veterans’ Affairs last week in Wellington and presented Weekly articles about local war vets John Beeching and Grace Lane. John, a 93-year-old former Royal Air Force pilot, was due to miss out on a Governmentfunded memorial plaque when he dies. He was previously entitled to a subsidised military plaque but was denied one because the new law says it should work to benefit those who served explicitly at the direction of the New Zealand government. Commonwealth veterans, despite serving as part of the Allied cause in WW2, do not fit this description. However, after publicity, local Nelsonians stepped in to fund John’s plaque.

Nelson WW2 veteran John Beeching will get his bronze memorial plaque after all, but it’s the kindness and generosity of Nelsonians – not the government – that has made it possible. Last week, Nelson Weekly told the story of London-born Beeching, who was set to miss out on the plaque reserved for veterans, because he has lived too long. The 93 year old has lived in New Zealand for 64 years, but because he is classed as a “Commonwealth veteran”, he won’t qualify for the plaque when he passes away, due to recent changes to the war pension’s act which came into effect on 1 July 2016. But since the article was published, four generous people have come forward offering to cover the $500 cost of John’s plaque, including an anonymous Auckland man, Port Nelson’s chief executive Martyn Byrne, a group of locals co-ordinated by Murray Leaning, and

ness ‘medals reunited’ and spent 37 years in military himself, with a significant portion of that time in the air force in the same ranks as John.

Barry says he and the RSA “are on the case” following the announcement of a review of the law by Minister of Veterans’ Affairs, David Bennett. “We are putting in a remit to change the act,” Barry says. This would cover all Commonwealth veterans regardless of the field of combat they served in. “It’s the right thing to do,” says Barry. It’s peanuts for the plaques.” The law is currently under review, with the Government last week announcing Professor Ron Paterson, of the University of Auckland, to lead the project. “This review will ensure an external and impartial perspective on how the Act is working,” says David Bennett. “We recognise and appreciate the contribution of those who have served in the Commonwealth forces. The Act does not provide for those veterans who served under another Government to have a plaque paid for by the New Zealand Government.” Its findings will be reported back to the Government in December. Last stop for Stoke loop FROM PAGE 1 helped create a “village feeling” which helps make the whole community more connected. “What price can you put on that?” Nelson City Council spokesperson Paul Shattock says $171,000 a year has been spent on the service, with 48% funded by the NZTA. He says, in the 12 months from April last year a total of 16,210 passenger trips were taken.

The bus driver says an average of 80 people was using it during the week. “Which is a pretty good number and if they changed the route I’m sure it would get even more people.” Councillor Stuart Walker, who is chair of the works and infrastructure committee, says the council regularly reviews its services. “We are seriously concerned about the lack of occupancy on the buses. By the time we divided the cost by the num-

ber of participants it was a hugely uneconomical thing to do.” However, he acknowledges that the council might not have done the best job in promoting the Stoke Loop’s existence. The council’s Paul Shattock says a wider review of public transport, which will be carried out this year, might provide different routes or options that are more useful. He also says it was widely publicised.

But Sue Tilby, of Age Concern, says Stoke’s growing and elderly population is being let down. “It’s seen as a link to get them to places. A lot of these people don’t drive and therefore they are stuck.” She also says she wasn’t approached by the council to promote the loop service in the organisation’s magazine. “If I had known it was in jeopardy then we could have done more ... It’s disappointing.”

neW PoLiTiCaL PaRTy misses ouT on eLeCTion: Nelson’s newest political party will miss out on this year’s general election after failing to get 500 members before today’s registration deadline. The Creative Alliance, founded last month by former Green Party MP and Nelson City councillor Mike Ward and former Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio, only gathered around 100 members. “We definitely didn’t get the 500 required, it’s very sad and disappointing,” says Mike. “Ours is an optimistic message and one that people need to hear, so we won’t go away. Currently, we just keep doing what we’re doing but we need to look at where we want to be and how we want to get there.” Membership is still open at www. creativealliance.org.nz for those who want to support the party in the future. Co-housinG CouLd heLP housinG Woes: A group of concerned Nelsonians are hoping the Nelson City Council will sell them land to build a new co-housing neighbourhood to combat the city’s affordability woes. The Nelson Cohousing Co-operative hopes to create the city’s first co-housing community and is calling for expressions of interest in the project. It would see about 20 to 30 units of varying sizes being built in a communal area, with some shared amenities. They would cost about $200,000. Co-operative member Jace Hobbs believes it would attract a range of people attracted to more affordable housing and a different kind of living. He hopes the council would get behind the idea and sell them surplus land for it. An information evening will be held at the Nelson Croquet Club Pavilion on the corner of Halifax St and Haven Rd on June 29 at 7.30pm.

Waimea Menzshed is making a real difference to the lives of Nelson refugees, thanks to a donation of bikes from NZ Post. NZ Post bikes are decommissioned after five years and then given away to local community groups. The groups chosen must have a genuine need for them, are required to re-paint them, and, following NZ Post tradition, keep them in good

condition. Menzshed co-ordinator Alan Kissell says that the project “is a great opportunity that just fell into place”. The Red Cross refugees were already coming to the Menzshed as part of a volunteer work experience scheme, but the donation of the bikes has completely changed the programme. Menzshed member Simon Allen, who is leading the project, says that it was a real opportunity to add value to the refugees’ work experience.

As the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary inches closer to their “milestone” pest removal operation, the opposition from the community is not letting up. But the Sanctuary says, despite the objection, they are determined to succeed in making their dream of being the largest pest-free sanctuary in the South Island, a reality. Over 50 people gathered at Millers Acre on Saturday to protest the drop of 26 tonnes of brodifacoum-laced bait in the sanctuary this winter. There will be three aerial applications of bait pellets spread by helicopter, spaced two-to-four weeks apart, between July and October. The public were notified last week that the sanctuary would close on July 2 to prepare for the drop. Although protesters were outraged by the drop, the walk up Trafalgar St to 1903 Square was not aggressive. Protest leader Christopher St Johanser says they won’t be backing down, and will-

Photo: Jessie Johnston. be drawing attention to the matter “in as many public forums as they are able to”. “We are acting with speed to ensure that this pollution does not occur, and we look for public support,” he says. “This is an abominable poison, far more toxic than the public has been led to believe. We believe they have no mandate from the publicthey have certainly set out to deny the public any voice in the decision-making process.” Sanctuary trustee and spokesperson Derek Shaw says that while they acknowledge the public’s concern, they are left with “no other choice” and are trying to remain focused on the

task at hand. “We would much rather not use the toxin, but there is no other way. If we want to bring back rare species, ground trapping and poisoning is not realistic. We could never achieve pest-free status without this,” he says. “We’re following best practice and when you’re looking in the toolbox of options there’s not many options left.” Derek also admits that the trust didn’t anticipate the backlash they have received. “We didn’t expect it, because for other fenced sanctuaries in New Zealand that have used brodifacoum, it wasn’t a major issue. We’re not sure why we’re striking more opposition,” he says.

“We’re very busy so haven’t been too distracted, but we are really trying to stay focused.” Derek adds that while they are taking into account what has been raised, much of the information regarding the drop has been “sensationalised.” “Of the 26 tonnes, most is cereal. There is 500 grams of brodifacoum in that, which is equivalent to a block of butter.” He says each green bait pellet is 16mm long and is designed to smell and taste appealing to rodents and not birds, being the active ingredient in household rat poison. “It’s also extremely insoluble in water, and does not get into the water itself. Jessie Johnston Creating Nelson Central School’s new sensory garden has been a total team effort and on Saturday it was finally completed. Last year the school submitted an application for a Treemendous School Makeover, an initiative run by the Mazda Foundation and Project Crimson, and was lucky enough to win the prize of $10,000. “We put in an application regarding a sensory garden and worked with Canopy Landscape Architects to come up with our concept plan, so each area within the garden engages the senses. These types of gardens are becoming more popular, particularly for people with special needs or learning disabilities,” says Lynley Walters-Kearney, lead teacher for Nelson Central School’s enviro group. “We had this really unattractive space within the school that was prone to vandalism and undesired behaviour during the weekend because it was so tucked away, it was all overgrown and unkept, so we wanted to be able to utilise that space.” Since April this year the school has held a working bee every weekend that parents, teachers, students, and even members of the community, have been involved in. Last Saturday marked the end of their project and to celebrate the garden’s completion a number of guests were there on the day, including Nelson mayor, Makos and Giants players, Ruud Kleinpaste and Riley Elliot. With grass mounds acting as seating, the garden offers the school an outside classroom, there is a relaxation space with a hammock and thick native shrubs and an area dedicated to textures that the children can enjoy with bare feet. The garden also features bird houses, weta houses and ladybird motels, a sound wall using recycled materials as musical instruments, a space for smelling thanks to plantings of thyme, oregano, curry and lemon balm, and some jumping posts for balance and motor skills. They even have an edible garden that will change with the seasons. As well as the $10,000 prize money, the school also received time and materials from a number of local businesses and Lynley says they are extremely grateful for that community support.

Matariki magic as a thousand people turn up for celebration

Kate Russell Nelsonians from all walks of life lit up the Railway Reserve last Wednesday evening, making this year’s Matariki celebrations at Victory one to remember. The festivities kicked off at 3:30pm at the Victory Community Centre, and one of the organisers, Gareth Cashin, says they estimated that over 1000 people attended the event, which will be marking a decade next year. “We had a great night - the community centre was a beacon of light, performances and kai,” he says. “The community came and enjoyed an active night on the Railway Reserve, taking in the performances and illuminated artwork along the way, and we also dished out 725 plates of hangi and 100 vegetarian curries.” Gareth says they had a range of performances in the centre from Victory Primary School, a range of cultural groups, kapa haka and a choir and finished off with fire and drumming performances. This year, organisers charged an entry fee of $1 and sold a range of neon gear, which Gareth says contributed well to the cost of the event. “We would like to say a huge thanks to our volunteers, supporting agencies and funders who allow us to make it happen.”

Brook Sanctuary fence: The fence is an expensive failure with continual breaches; the money could have paid for ongoing trapping etc. in ten times the area just using the interest. The Brook could be a place of refuge, not just when there's a possibility of a tsunami and/or the Maitai Dam breaks, and good drinking water. If brodificoum is dropped it will leach into the stream where kids play and freshwater life like the kokopu live, then it will go into the seawater compromising recreational use and commercial fishing for decades. Young singer cleans up at country music competition Brittany Spencer Nine-year-old crooner Chey Habib won over the crowd at the Golden Valley Country Music Awards on Queens Birthday Weekend. It was Chey’s very first country music awards but those listening wouldn’t have picked it, as the young Stoke singer took a plethora of prizes home from the Pohara Hall. Chey came first in the Junior Novice section, won the U18 Rock n Roll section singing Elvis Presley’s Blue Suede Shoes and came second in the Junior Gospel section after dedicating his song, Jealous of the Angels, to his great grandmother. “It is quite a special song for us because it was played at his great grandma's funeral after she passed away last year,” says Chey’s mother, Shelly Illingworth. “After the funeral he learnt all the words off by heart and put a video of him singing it up on youtube, it was just so emotional and there was a lot of feeling in it. “So when he went up on stage and said, 'the song I'd like to sing for my gospel number is a song that we played at my great grandmother's funeral and I'd like to dedicate this to her,' he brought tears to my eyes, it was a very touching moment,” she says. Chey also won People's Choice Award, Judges’ Choice, U18 best dressed Junior Award, came second in the Novelty and Busking sections with his mum and was highly commended in the Open Junior Section. The young country singer was also awarded the U18 Personality Award, an award Shelly won 12 years earlier. “You can see my name on the back

Now, Chey is constantly singing around the house and only has one question on his mind. “He only started singing three-six months ago so he hasn't been singing for long, but he's just got it in him and all he asks me is, ‘Mum, when is the next competition?’”

Ensure you’re on the right electricity plan. If you’re using less than 8000kw of power a year, it’s cheaper to be on a low user plan. Use tools such as whatsmynumber.org.nz to check you’re getting the best deal.

Check if it’s OK to use. Does it have a Council building permit or consent? Was it installed before 2000? Burners installed before 2000 in some parts of Nelson cannot be used or replaced with another wood burner.

Switching off your old second fridge could save up to $300 annually.

Use the free energy from the sun to dry clothes on an outside line, instead of in an electric dryer. You could save around $200 annually (and it costs nothing to do this).

Use Good Wood. This means dry wood with less than 25% moisture, left long enough after cutting to dry out before using it.

Run your heat pump on the most effective settings and clean the filter regularly to ensure it runs properly.

Change to energy saving light bulbs. A change of just 8 energy saving bulbs equates to $150 savings per year.

Use the right wood at the right time. Lighter wood (Pine or Douglas Fir) is good for kindling. Dense wood (Gum) burns longer and gives more heat once the fire is burning.

Check your shower usage. If the water from it fills a bucket in less than a minute you could save around $150 annually by changing to an efficient showerhead. Keep your showers short – in a household of three, each extra minute of shower time costs about $80 annually.

Store your wood properly – split and stack in a criss-cross pattern for good ventilation and keep in a covered, dry place.

Burning things like wet wood, plastic, rubbish or treated wood, is banned. It can create toxic fumes and damage your burner.

Turning off appliances left on standby saves around $125 annually.

Washing your clothes in cold water rather than warm water could save $65 annually.

What a day for a run Andrew Board As Monaco Mid-winter Marathon organiser Stu Cottam eyed the top runners coming into the final line he checked his watch and thought 'I'd be around that'. The veteran runner has been the man behind the marathon since its inception four years ago. The latest edition on Sunday saw 70 people complete the full marathon, for almost 30 of those it was their first marathon. Another 200 took part in relays from 10km to half marathons. The run starts at the Honest Lawyer and heads to Rabbit Island before coming back to where it started, a whopping 42.2 kilometres for those

who need reminding. Local runners Ben Clark and Kim Waddell won their respective races, and the "racey rabbit" winner’s trophies. Off-road distance specialist Ben prevailed overall in a time of 3 hours 3 minutes and 50 seconds. Accomplished triathlete Kim recorded a time of 3 hours 28 minutes and 14 seconds, with both winners recording a comfortable margin over second place. Stu says his highlights were seeing 17 year old Nayland College student Alina Mothes, completing her first ever marathon while finishing as the third-fastest woman. In the two person relay, the match up of school students Angus Wemyss and Sami Jordan eclipsed 3 hours, recording 2 hours and 53

minutes to finish second. Another highlight was seeing 65 year old Michael Stewart completing his 552nd marathon, in just 5 hours and 19 minutes. For Stu, he says it's a joy to see the smiles and grimaces on the faces and they trot past. "It's now a fixture on the running calendar and it's a pleasure to see all these people having a good time." But that pleasure has come at a cost for him, having never taken part in the event he created. "I was looking at the times and I thought I'd probably be up there with the front guy. I run about a 3 hour marathon and the winner came in around that." Asked if it gave him an itch to give the race a go, he conceeded it did. "Maybe next year, I'll be there."

Families, costumes, fake blood, and African drumming made for an entertaining combination at this year's 6 Hour Midwinter Breakout. The fun, annual mountain biking race gave 299 riders the chance to dress up, jump on their bikes and ride around Rabbit Island for six whole hours. "I've run seven events now and I would say that was the best one we've had, everybody had a good time and really enjoyed it,” says event organiser Wayne Pool, who spared some time and snuck in a few cheeky rides. “We built some new trails and reversed last year's track and it worked really well.” The group of riders were made up of all ages and stages, with one competitor who was over 60 riding out to the event from Nelson, biking the whole race solo, and then biking home again. And the young ones participated too, with Nelson Intermediate awarded $500 to put towards sports equipment after having the highest number of teams entered from a single school. However, the biggest prize of the day went to the best-dressed Rainbow Warriors Katie Gold, Lynley Chisnall, Bin Heaphy, and Deb Hughes, who won a $500 Vic Brew Bar voucher for their yellow wigs, tinsel covered helmets, stripy capes,

and shiny accessories. Wayne says the women were stand outs and really got into the idea of the Midwinter Breakout. “The day is all about fun so we don’t give out performance prizes, we give out a few thousand dollars worth of spot prizes and a prize for the best-dressed team and these ladies really got into the spirit of things.” Also dressed up was Team Concussion who were covered in convincing fake blood and raffled off mountain biking gear to raise $735 for the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter who get called out around the region to rescue injured mountain bikers. A new addition to the race this year were the In Rhythm African drummers who spurred along everyone when they hit the inevitable exhaustion near the end of the race. Another highlight of the day was when Henry Jaine rode the whole six hours solo and ahead of the pack. “He was winning the race on his own, right until the last lap when he was passed just before the finish by Team Skoda Racing, he managed to stay ahead of the fast four-person team until the last few minutes,” says Wayne. “To ride that on your own for six hours is really quite phenomenal.” In addition to being first among the solo men and second overall, Henry did the fastest lap, taking 14.45 minutes to do what the average person was riding in 25 minutes.

SportS FOOTBALL: It was goals galore at Guppy Park on Saturday as Richmond Athletic put eight past hosts FC Nelson. FC Nelson took a shock early lead before a Ben Harris brace and another penalty to the visitors looked to have buried FC Nelson within the first 30 minutes. But a quick two goals levelled the scores at 3-3 at half time. As in the first half, FC Nelson were the first to score after the break, before Richmond scored the next three, taking a 6-4 lead. Again, FC Nelson came back with a goal but they couldn't continue the fight back with Richmond going on to score another two. Final score 8-5 to Richmond. In the other Nelson Bays Football first division games Nelson College thrashed Nelson Suburbs 8-0 after running out a 7-0 half time lead, and Tahuna FC beat Motueka 5-0. RUGBY: Kahurangi beat Stoke 32-29 at Nayland College on Saturday in the Car Company division one championship. Marist put on a late rally to scare Wanderers at Brightwater, but not enough to beat them. Wanderers were up 39-15 heading into the closing stages of the game, which finished 39-34. Nelson beat Waimea Old Boys 30-29 (report on page 26). SWIMMING: After 10 years in Christchurch, the New Zealand Ocean Swim Series has announced that its South Island swim event is relocating to Nelson, with the very first, ‘The Big Tahuna’, event scheduled for Saturday, 31 March, 2018. Attracting over 8000 swimmers nationwide each year the series is entering its 12th season, and includes multiple distance events for elite athletes, as well as adults and children of all abilities, in the Bay of Islands, Auckland, Mt Maunganui, Wellington, Rotorua and now, Nelson.

New Zealand Red Cross is a member of the National Society of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), which is the world’s largest humanitarian organisation. Red Cross plays a vital role in aiding vulnerable people in New Zealand and overseas whose lives have become vulnerable through conflict, disaster or circumstance. As the lead agency for the community refugee resettlement programme Red Cross supports 1,000 quota refugees annually to settle in New Zealand through our Pathways to Settlement programme. Red Cross’ refugee programmes includes Pathways to Employment which supports 800 people with refugee backgrounds each year with their training and employment journey. The Red Cross Refugee Programmes Advisory Group provides essential insight, guidance and advice to both refugee programme staff and the National Board. The voice of experience from people who have experienced a refugee journey and settlement experiences in New Zealand is essential to guiding the delivery of our migration programmes. Membership of the Advisory Group is voluntary, however all transport costs are paid. If selected, you will be part of a group with members from around New Zealand and will be involved in all Red Cross refugee programme activity. We are looking for people who have personal experience of the refugee journey and comprehensive knowledge of current resettlement processes and the New Zealand resettlement context.
