‘They copy what’s on TV’ Brittany Spencer Reporter

reporter@nelsonlive.co.nz

A hammer and knives have been used to rob two local dairies over the past week and the offenders are getting the idea to do it from television, says the region’s area

commander for police. The NPD Hira Store was robbed on Friday last week and just two days later the Roto St Dairy was also targeted. In both cases the offenders were young and they were arrested not long after the crimes. Inspector Mat Arnold-Kelly says

there is a growing trend of robberies in Nelson, with five businesses targeted in a similar way since the start of the year. “It’s a very worrying trend, not just locally, but also nationally. And youths are telling us that they are emulating behaviour on TV. It seems to be a bit of a common

theme, they see reports of robberies in places like Auckland and think ‘we’ll give it a go’.” At the first robbery in Hira, store owner Rakesh Bandi should have been celebrating his one year anniversary at the business, instead, he had aggressive teenagers waving hammers in his face and de-

manding cash and cigarettes. Rakesh says it was just after 8am when the group of four drove a stolen car to his station. “I was just behind the counter and suddenly they came in screaming at the top of their voices, ‘Oh you

Mat Arnold-Kelly says police have been speaking with dairy owners and staff about preventing robberies and says a part of that is trying to make the store open and bright. “Environmental design of a store can be a heavy influence for offenders not picking these places. A lot of this offending is opportunistic.”

Soaked, but no reported damage Kate Russell Rivers swelled, sports were cancelled, and school galas were postponed as heavy rain hammered the Nelson region over the weekend. Up to 116mm of rain fell at Nelson Airport from Friday night up until yesterday morning, and 236mm of rainfall was recorded at Happy Sams near Takaka in the same period. The Tasman district experienced surface flooding in Waimea West and slips in Ruby Bay and on the Moutere Highway, but Nelson City Council spokesperson Paul Shattock says there were no major incidents to report in Nelson. “It looks like the Ruby Bay slip was the main issue in the region, but it acts as a great reminder for people to clear their drains, drive carefully through surface water and don’t let children play in or around the flooded streams,” he says. A spokesperson from MetService says Nelson can now expect drier, more settled weather for the rest of the week. “It was a pretty wet weekend for Nelson thanks to the area of pressure that moved across from the Tasman Sea, but the region can now look forward to a pretty decent week.”

A cartoon sent to the Nelson Weekly office after an article in last week’s edition reported on a mystery artist leaving artwork at a Stoke cafe.

Nelson’s very own Banksy? Kate Russell The mystery artist who leaves cartoons at a Stoke cafe has come forward -- sort of. Work from the artist was featured in last week’s Nelson Weekly, after the owners of Squires Cafe in Stoke started to collect and frame the work he left behind. The Weekly article

included a note to see if anyone knew who the artist, who signs his work “Walker”, was, so it could interview him. Instead, he sent a letter to the editor to the Weekly office in Tahunanui with no note but a cartoon about the article. The cartoon features a man reading the Nelson Weekly and talking to a woman about the

article. She opines: “Darling, it could be the next Banksy... or it’s just a weirdo.” Weekly publisher Andrew Board says he was thrilled with the cartoon. “It only makes it more of a mystery. I wonder what he’ll do next. He certainly has us interested, I guess we’ll have to wait and see.”

If anyone wants to know what Mike Hosking is really like to work with, then grabbing a coffee at Red Art Gallery and Cafe would be a good start. New owners Suzi and Antony Stevens took over the business on Monday after moving south from Auckland. In buying the gallery and cafe, Antony has traded a career as executive producer of TVNZ’s Seven Sharp for business ownership in Nelson. While the Stevens have only been in Nelson for a week, the move from their home in Titirangi has been six months in the making. During a trip to visit Antony’s parents in Motueka with their two daughters last summer, they visited the gallery. “We came in and loved it,” says Antony. “Suzi has a background in art and design and the building just sang out to her. “We also had friends who

which time he helped run Breakfast, Fair Go and Seven Sharp. But he says the Auckland lifestyle wasn’t working for them. “We were there for 12 years,

and for me, it was taking me away from my girls – getting home at 8pm every night, something had to change. “I went to my boss, head of news and current affairs at TVNZ for advice, and he said ‘you’ve got to do it.’” And, he hasn’t missed it. Their daughters, aged eight and 12, have now started at local schools, and they are hoping to fully embrace the Nelson way of life. “It’s massive – we haven’t just brought a business, we’ve brought a lifestyle,” he says. Antony says he was always a “big advocate” for Nelson in his time at Seven Sharp. “In the last year and a half we did a lot of stories out of Nelson and Tasman – the history of the Nelson Market, Pic’s Peanut Butter and Hamish the heron from Mapua.” He also wants Nelsonians to know that everything will be running ‘as per usual’ at the gallery, with the same staff and the same great coffee. “[Previous owners] Caroline and Sarah have worked so hard to create this, and although we’ll put our mark on it, any changes will be gradual.”

Meet Dave – Nelson’s best super sub Charles Anderson Journalist

charles@nelsonweekly.co.nz

He might be 71-years-old, missing a spleen, have a bad heart, a wonky shoulder, a problematic hernia and breathing problems but there can be little doubt that Dave Palmer is the super sub to end all super subs. For 23 years Dave has been the man to call on if you are down a player - whether it be netball, cricket or soccer - Dave will be up for it. “I've had that many injuries and still come back for more. I'm a hard man to put down sometimes.” It was 1994 when he first wandered into Action Indoor Sports, which was then located on Pascoe St in Tahunanui. Back then he was a resident at Ngawhatu Psychiatric Hospital and discovered that the outdoor area at the sports complex was less than ideal. “There were cigarette butts everywhere. So then I offered to clean it up.” Which he did. Then he kept coming back. He started tidying up around the place, emptying the rubbish and cleaning the balls.

Everybody has got something they want to do full time. I haven’t got Sky Sport because it costs too much money, but cricket and soccer are my thing.” Dave also coaches some indoor soccer teams though sometimes he says it's like “talking to a brick wall” because out of all the teams he says there are only about four people that really know the rules. “And I know the rules.” He can also be seen during the summer months doing the scoring for Stoke Nayland Cricket Club. Dave lives in an assisted living facility with three others and, despite being given a less than optimistic prognosis by doctors, he is still keen to keep playing. “I’ve been trying to take it easy. If I rush that’s when the trouble starts.” He says it still annoys him when the sports complex gets a bit messy, but with Dave on the job it is not likely to stay that way for long.

I've showed Xmas lights for over a decade. Hope they go back to lights. LEDs are cheap to run, easy to source and with that kind of money Nelson could put on one hell of a display. Mark Logan.

Reply to letter from Bryan Hardie Boys on Brook Sanctuary: Yes, I did know Brodificoum doesn't break down easily, that is why I wrote "it will leach into the water affecting its use for decades - going up the food chain, and when it does break down is it into healthy organic substances". Do you believe all the propaganda chemical companies tell you? 'Clean green' NZ uses chemicals banned years ago by more enlightened countries, we also have the highest rates of cancers and heart attacks. The SPCA opposes Brodificoum because it takes 3 weeks of agony for an animal to die. Going by the universal lore - 'what you sow you reap'... at least cyanide is instant. A fundraiser with a steampunk flavour is set to kick-start Nelson Tasman Hospice’s mission to build a new home. Over 200 tickets have already been sold to the Big Night Out – a Steampunk Fantasy on 21 July at Annesbrook Community Centre. The money raised will go towards helping the Hospice build their brand-new $14 million facility on Suffolk Rd. Organising committee member Pamela White says they wanted to create a “signature fundraiser” for the Hospice. “It had to be something that was unique and a whole lot of fun, and steampunk felt like a

brand new exciting theme that hadn’t been done before in Nelson – and it’s a real excuse to get creative.” Steampunk is a fashion culture which combines classical Victorian fashion with futuristic technology. Think steam power, airships, and clockwork engines combined with teacups, top hats and coattails. Pamela says they’ll have the venue completely staged in theme, and they have sourced props and accessories from people’s garages, recycling centres and donated items. “People will really feel like they are entering another world when they walk through the doors.” They have also received generous donations of local products, sponsorships and auction

items for the event. Hospice’s fundraising and marketing manager, Paul McIntyre, adds that the timing for the event is perfect. “We’ve got the land for our planned new building, and we’re starting to fundraise in earnest to turn the plans into reality for the new facility which will benefit the region’s community. The evening will be a fun way to raise a significant amount of money towards the new build.” Entry to the event is $125, which includes complimentary drinks, a three-course meal and entertainment from Christchurch covers band Headrush. Tickets are available from Karen Jordan Style, Trouble & Fox, Summit Stoke, Richmond and Motueka.

temporary closure

closed for 90 days for remodelling, including a larger restraurant and upgrades. We want all our lovely customers to know that all of our signature dishes are available both as takeaways or in-house at our other restaurant, the lemongrass. thank you and see you soon! Since opening its doors back in 2010 on Richmond’s Queen St, Chai Yo has provided a staple takeaway menu for many locals and a warm, welcoming restaurant for sit-down dining. Owners Bu-nga Krataitong and Nuttavut Rodsienglum are proud of how far the restaurant has come in the last seven years and in a bid to improve what they can offer their loyal, local customers, they will be closing the doors to Chai Yo temporarily for a full renovation. Chai Yo’s last night of service was Saturday, July 1, with work on the popular Thai restaurant scheduled to take place over the next three months. While Bunga and the team are excited about the changes they have planned for the restaurant, their loyal customers have expressed sadness over the temporary closure, which is why Bu-nga and Nuttavut will be doing all they can to accommodate Chai Yo fans at their second restaurant, The Lemongrass. From Chai Yo’s mouth-watering menu, 10 signature dishes have been selected by Bu-nga and Nuttavut and will be served at The Lemongrass for the duration of the restaurants closure. The Lemongrass’s kitchen will be rearranged to accommodate the cooking equipment needed to re-create Chai Yo’s popular meals, which include their crunchy chicken with creamy curry sauce, Thai green and Thai red curries, their Pad Thai, fried rice and more.

As well as in-house dining, customers can also order these dishes to takeaway, for the same price as they were at Chai Yo. So with the favourites taken care of thanks to The Lemongrass, loyal customers can get just as excited as the Chai Yo team about the renovations. Not only will the restaurant receive an interior update, it will also be extended into what is currently the Red Cross shop, taking their 30 capacity dining room to one that can seat around 50. While undertaking a renovation is enough to keep anyone busy, Bu-nga and Nuttavut are also hard at work on the creation of their new restaurant in Nelson, focusing on Thai and Chinese dishes. The pair wishes to thank their customers for all the positive feedback and support they have received for Chai Yo and The Lemongrass over the years, and are sure their future Nelson customers will feel the same about their latest hospitality venture. Open seven days for lunch from 11:30am until 2:30pm, and dinner from 4.30pm until 9:30pm, you’ll find all your Chai Yo favourites, cooked by authentic, experienced Thai chefs, at The Lemongrass. Located at 294 Queen St, there is plenty of parking in Harkness car park, with access to The Lemongrass available beside Arthur Wakefield Motor Inn. Bookings are encouraged and can be made by calling The Lemongrass on 544 4838.

The Chai Yo team look forward to seeing you after the restaurants upgrade. From left, Wanlapa Krataitong, Sanga Boonperm, Sa-at Pinta and Bianca Eyles-Leggett.

For 107 years Beggs Musicworks has ensured Nelsonians get the play and listen to the very best sound. Beggs was founded in Dunedin in 1862 by Scottish piano maker Charles Begg. Forty-odd years later a store was opened in Nelson’s Trafalgar St and so the city’s love affair with great music was enhanced. Beggs owner Tim Babbage says

while the industry has changed enormously over the past century the core of Beggs hasn’t: “We know music, we love music, we want everyone else to love music too.” Tim points out that Beggs, which moved to its current location on Hardy St in the 1970s, is probably one of the few businesses in Nelson that still does what it set out to do more than 100 years

Beyond the singular aesthetics of French craftsmanship that characterizes the Tramontane series, the T70 imposes itself in the world of the entrylevel acoustic guitars with a solid spruce top that’s rich and deep in tone. Sound quality, combined a comfortable playing experience essential to the beginner, make it the best value of the moment. The HIT models have a headstock integrated tuner.

Tim first started working in the industry in the mid 1980s and bought Beggs Musicworks in 1995. He says the evolution of music has been remarkable.

Beggs owner Tim Babbage outside the store on Hardy St. Before that it was on Trafalgar St, where Glassons is now. “When I started in electronics in the mid 80s it was turntables and VHS. It’s evolved now to streaming and bizarrely enough back to vinyl, which has done a 30-year circle. “It’s the same with instruments, 30 years ago the biggest mover was the keyboard, it was huge. If you think back to the 80s it was a lot of synths and electronica, before it was called electronica. It was a new exciting field. Now one of the

more popular music genres is folk. That stripped down true instrument, simple talent is back. And now our biggest sellers are guitar and drums. Whereas in the 80s if we sold a drum kit it was unusual.” Another big seller for Beggs is ukulele’s. Tim says the push to play them in

The difference between kids now and kids 30 years ago is that they can see how it’s done now. YouTube is probably the single biggest driver of freakishly talented kids because they can watch YouTube and

say ‘oh, is that’s how it’s done and try it’. “You get kids that come in and play and you just go ‘wow’. And there’s some genuinely talented kids. You look at Rockquest, the talent at Rockquest these days is phenomenal.” But it isn’t just musical instruments that Beggs excel at, they also help us listen to great sound with their range of Hi-Fi equipment. Tim says people listen to more music now because it’s never been easier to listen.

It’s an easy instrument to play, you can sing along and its fun. It’s a very social instrument and you can buy a good playable ukulele for

$50. The only thing cheaper than that is a recorder.” Tim says the success of Kiwi musicians has helped drive the industry. “The biggest difference between now and 30 years ago is that a New Zealander has the number one album in the US Billboard charts. That wouldn’t have happened 30 years ago and that has been the single

biggest change to the music industry in this country. Making music that can make it worldwide, including locals like the Broods. “That success helps drive interest in musical instruments. Being a creative artist isn’t a dirty word anymore. Thirty to 40 years ago if you told someone you were a professional musician they’d look at you and say

“With music on your phone, or being able to stream it through an app, music has never been as accessible but playing it on the right speakers is a problem that a lot of people have. Just look at the number of headphones sold in this country and worldwide in the last few years. It’s mind-blowing. A lot of the music being played now is really personal, or really bad because they’re listening to it on terrible Blue-tooth speakers or on the speakers on their phone. “Probably the biggest difference between us and other sellers of audio equipment is that because we know what instruments should sound like, we know what it should sound like when you reproduce it. That’s the benefit of selling both instruments and HiFi gear, we understand what good sound should sound like.” A third area of the business that has experienced huge grow in recent years is the amount of turntables and vinyl records Beggs

Youth performers to deliver Les Mis Kate Russell

It’s all love, revolution and redemption for the Nelson Youth Theatre Company, who is ready to kick off a ten performance run of one of the most challenging musicals ever written. Les Miserables will be opening this Thursday night at the Theatre Royal, running until July 15. It’s the third time they have performed the iconic show in ten years, after shows in 2007 and 2012. Director Richard Carruthers says it’s a “firm favourite” with the company. “It’s the sort of show that has eveLES MIS: Aston van Gosliga, left, and Saul Gibney will be part of rything, and the performers althe Nelson Youth Theatre’s production of Les Miserables, which ways want to do it. opens at the Theatre Royal this Thursday. Scallop farms to stay closed Continued low scallop levels at the top of the South Island have forced a further temporary closure of the 2017/2018 scallop season. Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy says the Southern Scallop fishery SCA 7 closure affects scallop fisheries in Golden Bay, Tasman Bay, the Marlborough Sounds and the neighbouring Port Underwood area. "I closed parts of the fishery last season after surveys showed a substantial decline in scallop numbers. This has allowed the fishery to be rested, but surveys this year show the stocks have still not recovered significantly," he says. To discover the cause of their decline and recovery options, the Government has committed $400,000 over two years to a comprehensive research programme.

Mis – we’ve got to put everything into this’, so they are really ready for it now.” With a double cast of 66, supported by a mixed adult and youth crew of about 70, audiences can expect a powerful three and a half hours of the full West End musical version of the show. Les Miserables is a musical that is totally sung-through and set against the backdrop of 19th-century France in the years following Napoleon’s defeat at Waterloo - a time of intense poverty, turmoil and revolution. And according to Richard, it is one of the longest and most difficult musicals available for amateurs to stage. “It’s got a number of challenges. It’s long, so it’s challenging to re-

hearse, the singing is challenging, and some scenes, such as the barricade scene, are difficult. “But, for many it’s their sixth to tenth musical and we also have a few older actors playing some of the roles.” The Nelson Youth Theatre Company was founded in January 2000, and to date has produced over 160 shows and run over 50 professionally-taught theatre courses for young people in Nelson. Later this year they will be performing The Little Mermaid and Joseph and The Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat. Les Miserables is on at the Theatre Royal from 6 – 15 July. IMPORTANT NOTICE ABOUTTHE THELAW LAW GOVERNING THE SAFETY OF TREES NEAR NEAR IMPORTANT NOTICE ABOUT GOVERNING THE SAFETY OF TREES POWER LINES – Electricity(Hazards (Hazards from Regulations 20032003 POWER LINES - Electricity fromTrees) Trees) Regulations This information is brought to you by Nelson Electricity who owns and operates the electricity distribution network in Nelson City and supplying approximately 9,200 consumers in what is mainly an urban area. Trees close to power lines are a safety hazard. On 1st July 2005 the Tree Regulations came into effect to protect the security of the supply of electricity and for the safety of the public. There is the potential for injury or even death by electrocution if you touch a tree which is touching a power line. Children in particular like to climb trees and when these trees are close to power lines, there is always the risk of serious injury or even death. Trees can cause power cuts especially in strong winds, rain and snow. Your power supply may be disrupted when trees fall or branches break, damaging power lines, poles or other structures. In dry conditions serious fires can be caused. The Tree Regulations spell out the responsibilities for electricity lines companies and tree owners in making sure that trees are kept safely trimmed away from the lines. They define two zones around power lines as shown in the diagram below. Growth Limit Zone – no part of a tree or other vegetation should be inside this zone. Lines companies are required to issue Cut or Trim Notices to owners when their trees are within the Growth Limit Zone. Notice Zone – if your trees reach this zone you may receive a Hazard Notice warning that the trees must not enter the Growth Limit Zone. Nelson Electricity carries out routine surveys on its network and issues Cut or Trim Notices to owners of trees that have grown into the Growth Limit Zone. If you receive a Tree Cut or Trim Notice it is important that you read the information sent to you and respond accordingly. Tree owners are required to respond to Notices by either:  

Overhead Line 33kV – HV 11kV – HV 400V/230V – LV

Notice Zone 3.5 metres 2.6 metres 1.5 metres

Growth Limit Zone 2.5 metres 1.6 metres 0.5 metres

Arranging for trees to be trimmed at their cost by a professional lines-qualified arborist to a clearance outside the Notice Zone; or Informing the lines company that they have no interest in the trees. The lines company may then fell the trees (in some instances they may choose to trim).

If trees on your property have not previously been trimmed by the Nelson Electricity you may be eligible for the first trim free of charge. In exceptional circumstances, a dispensation from the regulatory clearances may be applied for. If tree owners do not comply with the Regulations and fail to have their trees cut or trimmed they can be fined up to $10,000 along with $500 per day for ongoing offences. Tree owners may also be liable for the cost of outages and repair of power lines if damage has been caused by their trees. Cutting or trimming trees near power lines is an extremely hazardous activity. If branches or people come into contact with a live line while the tree is being cut a potentially fatal electric shock may result. If live lines are brought down by cutting trees, then serious safety hazards to other people and property in the vicinity may occur. Trimming or felling trees in close proximity to power lines must only be carried out by professional arborists who have had specific training and are qualified to work near power lines. For further details and information on professionally qualified arborists used and recommended by Nelson Electricity please contact: Phone 03 546 9256 Website www.nel.co.nz

Repco Nelson’s long standing staff member, Kay Paterson, with branch manager, Tony O’Donnell.

Nelson Bonanza The Repco Nelson store is holding a big Nelson Bonanza event this weekend and everyone is invited.

Repco Nelson is gearing up for a massive sale that their customers certainly won’t want to miss out on, to be held over the weekend of July 8 and 9. The promotion will also be providing a local community group with the opportunity to fundraise through a sausage sizzle. Tapawera AwaOra is a newly formed incorporated society, set up to address the tragic state of the Motueka River. Their project is currently focused on the area between Kohatu and the Tapawera Bridges, planting pockets of native trees and addressing the pest species. Repco Nelson branch manager Tony O’Donnell says the company always tries to support community groups when they run major sales, and encourages people to support Tapawera AwaOra too when they head in to the store this weekend. While the sale isn’t storewide, there is so much on offer for some almost unbelievable prices including six cans of Motortech Tyre Shine for just $6, a Sony iPod USB tuner for $75 and the Mechpro wet and dry vacuum, 1250w, for the hot price of $49.99, plus, 25 per cent off batteries, 40 per cent off Mothers Car Care range and a massive 50 per cent of tool storage.

While the sale is a fantastic reason to head into Repco Nelson, there are plenty of other reasons why you should choose the Repco team for your car care requirements, first and foremost, their comprehensive product knowledge. “The knowledge and experience we’ve got as a team, and throughout all of our branches, means we can answer all our customers questions to ensure they get what they need,” says Tony. In fact, Repco Nelson is a team with around 100 years combined experience, including Kay Paterson who has been with the Repco brand for 51 years. “One of the things that I find quite cool is that Kay also worked with my father,” says Tony. “It’s great to have that generational history and Repco is a family in itself. I’ve worked around multiple branches in the country and the feeling within the company is the same wherever you go. I’ve worked for other big company’s and never got that same feeling of home.” For expert service, quality products and some unbelievable prices, come and see the Repco team over their sale weekend. You’ll find them at 49 Gloucester St.

Nelson College got its Quadrangular Tournament campaign off to the perfect start with a big 24-5 win over Wellington College on Monday. The 91st edition of the annual tournament is being hosted by Nelson, who last won it in 2015 in Wellington. The tournament, between Wellington College, Nelson College, Christ's College and Wanganui Collegiate, was first played for in 1925.

Nelson has an extra incentive this year, as holders of the Moascar Cup, they have to defend it on each of their home games. Nelson hold the cup, the schoolboy equivalent of the Ranfurly Shield and managed to hold onto it with the win over Wellington. Earlier, defending champions Christ's College beat Wanganui 13-7. The final of the tournament will be held on Wednesday at 12.30pm.

Unrivalled: Rival Blue Diamonds unbeaten A revolving starting seven and sliding between grades hasn’t slowed Rival Blue Diamonds, whose latest win on Saturday kept their unbeaten netball season alive in the Nelson grade 3 netball competition. Rival topped Prices Pharmacy White 37-24 at Saxton Stadium on Saturday, continuing their dominance. Coach Annette Vercoe says a bad run of injuries last year meant they started this season in grade 4. “We were a wee bit frustrated to be in that grade to begin with, so we had a point to prove.” And prove it they did, going unbeaten in five games to earn promotion to grade 3. But the step

up in competition hasn’t slowed them, going unbeaten through four games, a draw against bottom-placed Richmond the only blemish. Annette says Laura Richards in attack and Alicia Davis in defence are the rocks of the team. “We haven’t had a consistent starting 7 with people away. We have a core of nine who adapt and play in different positions, depending on who’s available. Every time we play it’s a different seven. “But the girls have been pretty keen to do well this year. They’ve trained hard and that’s showing on the court.” She says the strength of the team is across the court. “We’re

through-court strong defensively, teams struggle to get flow on and score points against us quickly. Defensively we’re doing well.” This week Rival will play Wanderers on Fire, the final game of the second round. If they win, it's likely they will be promoted again to grade 2. Annette says that’s the goal. “We’re hoping to get up into grade 2 and be competitive at least, and we want to be there at the end of the year.” As for an unbeaten season? Annette says the players aren’t talking about it but it has been on her mind. “But I think we might be challenged if we go up a grade.”

Nelson ‘breeding ground’ for obstacle course competitors Charles Anderson Nelson is making a name for itself as a hotbed for Obstacle Course racing with half of the country’s entire qualifying field for the world championships coming from the region. “It’s like a breeding ground for obstacle course racing,” says Colin Menzies of Obstacle Racing New Zealand. Obstacle course racing stalwarts Reid Carnegie and Ben Bolitho qualified for the world championships in Ontario, Canada, through the Wairua Warrior. The event, in Hira, gained accreditation as a qualifying event for the first time this year. However, there are other locals who also qualified for the world champs - Ethan Halliwell, Sam Millison, Dawn Chalmers, Caitlin Fielder and Cameron. “They have set the tone now,” Colin says. “In Nelson, the terrain is good and there are lots of hills. People enjoy it.” The world championships features 1500 competitors from about 50 countries. All will be climbing, swinging, crawling, carrying and dragging their way through the gruelling 15km and 3km courses. Colin says Reid is training for a podium spot at this year’s event. “He has a very good chance of making

I have been tracking his training data and he is right up there with top blokes in his division as far as pace goes.” Sam Millison had never ran an obstacle race before, but finished fourth at the Wairua Warrior which meant he qualified for this year’s event. “It'd be great to be able to get these young athletes to OCRWC this year as their running pace and times are worldclass,” Colin says.

However, he says as OCRNZ has just started it was still looking at ways to raise funds for them. In 2015 and 2016 there was only one New Zealander attend the world champs. “So to have four attend this year and over a dozen qualified, with half of those coming from the Nelson region, is quite an achievement in such a short time and one that Kiwis should be proud of, especially the people of Nelson.”
