Outrage over local mining prospecting Conservation Minister Eugenie Sage says the opening of two vast new areas for prospecting, including 8000sq km in Nelson, was unfortunately timed. Environmentalists are also demanding to know why officials have just lifted a three-year moratorium on the South Island areas - one in Otago covering more than 33,000sq km and another in Nelson covering nearly 8000sq km. Both had been closed to prospecting while regional aeromagnetic surveys were undertaken, and to allow an allocation strategy for the areas to be developed. While applications for other types of mineral permits continued to be accepted over the closure period in the two areas - and some permits were already in place there - New

Zealand Petroleum and Minerals lifted the moratorium on July 8. The land that was under the prospecting moratorium includes conservation land, including reserves, conservation areas and national parks. It included parts of Mt Richmond Forest Park, Victoria Forest Park, and numerous other rich biodiverse areas classified as stewardship land. “Dun Mountain and the Red Hills are a stunning, special part of Mt Richmond Forest Park,” Forest & Bird chief executive Kevin Hague said. “Over a dozen threatened species flourish in this seemingly stark landscape and thousands of visitors enjoy the diversity as they walk this section of national Te Araroa Trail. “This is not an area that should ever be opened to mining.”

The areas also included parts of both Kahurangi and Nelson Lakes national parks. Hague said these should be immediately excluded as they were protected from mining - something that had been vigorously fought for. Forest & Bird has questioned why this was allowed to happen when the Government was just months away from beginning consultation on how to fulfil its pledge of protecting all public conservation land from mining. “Having 40,000 people march down Queen St in 2010 made it pretty clear that the public does not want mining on conservation land. Sage acknowledged the timing of the moratorium ending was unfortunate, given the work being done on the “no new mines on conservation land” policy.

“However, as ministers have said previously, the status quo applies until the law changes, through finalising and implementing the no new mines policy,” she said. She noted that having a prospecting permit from MBIE did not guarantee that DoC would grant access to conservation land. Before DoC or ministers allowed access to conservation land for prospecting, exploration or any mining activity, they reviewed the impacts the activity was likely to have on conservation values, such as unique ecosystems and wildlife. An MBIE spokesperson said operators seeking minerals permits would also need to comply with the Resource Management Act. - NZ Herald

Nelson’s parking has long been an issue of contention and a number of locals have made the call to Nelson City Council to change the traditional coin operation to an Efpos-friendly system. Wei-Siew Leon says she finds it incredibly annoying needing to carry around the right amount of change. “In Wellington they have snapper cards, so it would be good to get something like that.” Helen Weir agrees: “These are stupid machines and are not user friendly at all, would be a jolly good idea to upgrade them to Eftpos.” Sharon Palmer from Richmond says the parking metres play on her mind when she travels into town. “I always carry around change just in case I need to use the parking machines.”

The hourly charge for parking in Nelson city will increase by 50 cents to $2 on August 1, although the first hour of parking in the city is free. Alec Louverdis, group manager infrastructure says the proposal to increase the parking fee by 50 cents per hour was consulted on as part of the Long-Term Plan process. Alec says the key driver was to increase the revenue gathered from car parking as this goes towards city centre enhancement. “This funding is used for

initiatives such at the summer hanging basket display, maintenance of street trees, furniture and the like.” He says an increase in parking charges will enable more to be done to in this area, alongside other work planned of the city centre. Part of this plan also includes upgrading the coin operated parking machines. “The renewal and updating of parking meters is also included in the Long Term Plan, this project will begin this financial year with a study into smarter options for parking meters in the CBD.” The one-hour free parking will remain in place.

Frustration over Stoke centre ‘shambles’ Sara Hollyman Reporter

Overwhelming disappointment is the feeling of the Stoke community when they speak about the management of the Greenmeadows Centre. Residents say they feel let down by the Nelson City Council as well as the contractors tasked with building them a community hub. It was announced last week by Nelson Mayor Rachel Reese and CEO Pat Dougherty that an independent audit had uncovered more construction work that needs to be redone before it can officially open. The project has already had a $1million budget increase from its original price and has had its deadline pushed out several times. Problems includes windows that are not properly installed, roof strengthening, and re-positioning of drainage, among other things. At a recent media conference the director of Auckland based contractor Watts and Hughes, Rob Murphy, said that the company would do everything it needed to do to ensure Nelson gets a building that is quality. “We have a reputation and we live on that reputation,” he said. If there were any issues with the build they would be back to fix it,

However, now work is expected to take at least the rest of the year. It was originally scheduled to open late last year. Stoke resident Grant Mulder says it feels like “Auckland’s done a runner”. building can cost so much, I don’t know. The council seems to waste money in lots of areas.” Lynley Gilchrist-Lunn, who will occupy the cafe space says it will be a beautiful building, but sadly the build problems have meant that this year has been a “personal disaster” for her. “We need to open soon, or we won’t be opening at all. I remain committed to the project and to Stoke as a whole, despite the enormous and stressful disappointment in terms of time, money and general goodwill of the community that the build process has generated. I’m hope-

imising on the dollar but now look where we are ... someone needs to be held accountable.” Kim Biggs, operations manager of the Stoke Rugby Club, one of the major stakeholders, says the club is “very disappointed with how everything’s turned out”. “The council have worked really hard to allow us partial use of the building but now with the latest construction findings it puts us back to square one so yes, we are very disappointed.” Mayor Rachel Reese says she found it “extraordinary” that the project has gotten to this point. “We expect the parties to meet their obligations in terms of delivering this project.” Council says it will try to recover as much of the costs as possible but will also face some extra as they take on legal and expert advice. Councillor Mel Courtney says the centre represents an “appalling case of mismanagement”. Richard Waite, president of the Stoke Tennis Club, which is also another stakeholder, says the situation is regrettable. “However, we remain confident that the end result will deliver a lasting benefit to [the club] and to the Stoke community.” Nelson Cricket general manager Dave Leonard says in 10 to 15 years time it will be a “fantastic facility”. “And everyone will have forgotten about these issues, hopefully.”

NEWS Jewel thief pleads not guilty: The man accused of stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of jewellery from across the Nelson Bays area has pleaded not guilty to the charges laid against him. Christopher Payne, 38, was due to appear in the Nelson District Court yesterday but has pleaded not guilty to the charges and has opted to face trial by jury later in the year. He was arrested in May and charged in connection with 19 burglaries around the region. He appeared before the courts earlier this month charged with multiple counts of burglary, theft of a motor vehicle, possession of utensils for methamphetamine and breach of release conditions. He will next appear before the courts on 11 October. Changes to rates rebate scheme: From 1 July, the rates rebate scheme was extended to include retirement village residents who do not own their unit but pay fees to live there. Nelson Mayor Rachel Reese says she is pleased that retirement village residents are now recognised as ratepayers, placing them with a ‘license to occupy’ on par with those who own units. Council will be contacting retirement villages that may have eligible residents to arrange visits and will also be making contact with residents who received a rebate last year. If you earn less than $25,180 per year and pay the rates on your home, you could get up to $630 taken off your rates. Rebates are assessed based on your income, total rates and the number of dependants living with you.

A Garin College student, who took her speech about mental health online after she was not allowed to speak it at the school’s annual arts festival, is now training to become a youth mental health advocate. Last month Kira Evenden, 15, posted her speech online, and in the Nelson Weekly, where it was seen by the chief executive of Changing Minds – a nonprofit organisation dedicated to inspiring better mental health in New Zealand. Kira was then invited to take part in the organisation’s Rākau Roroa programme which helps trains young mental health leaders of the future. She is the only person from outside of Auckland taking part in the intensive course, which explores issues like human rights, discrimination, and well-being. “It’s a big course but I’m really enjoying it,” says Kira. “It is all about how to voice your story

Photo: Charles Anderson. while looking after yourself and your audience at the same time.” She says the hope is that they can inspire others with mental health issues to feel confident to voice their own stories.

“They give you the skills to see what you can do in your own community.” Kira says, in the wake of her speech, Garin College has been especially supportive of her and what she wants to do

in the future. She is planning on working in mental health and hopes to study psychology at university after her college days. “So this is a really great opportunity.”

Rest home loves going to the dogs

Stephanie Loader has had a lifelong love affair with dogs. The Wood Retirement Village resident is a former animal behaviourist, specialising in dalmatians, and even published a book about her days with dogs, Tails to Wag With, in 2016. However, her ailing health has meant she is no longer able to spend her days running around with her beloved furry friends. A local organisation is help-

ing rest home residents such as Stephanie fill the pet-shaped hole in their hearts. Every week, the residents of The Wood are paid a visit by a therapy dog as part of a nationwide initiative called Canine Pet Therapy. Stephanie says it is a highlight of her week. “I just love getting my hands on the dogs.” She says she has developed a close bond with the therapy dogs. “We are good friends, when you build up that relationship it’s really nice.”

The initiative was started six months ago by local dog lover Lili Wenzel, who heard of a similar programme and wanted to do her part. The Clifton Terrace teacher says her school has a close relationship with The Wood, so it was a natural fit. Lili says it is a very therapeutic time for everyone. “The dogs and residents are so relaxed after, they just sit and chat with the dogs and pat them, they really light up.” She says her dogs, Snout and Miss

Muppet, know to be gentle with the residents. “Sometimes when we have visitors they jump up, but they don’t do it here, they are very calm, it’s almost like they know this is not a place to be rowdy, scratchy or barky.” Lili says the visits put a smile on hers and the residents' faces, and her dogs also love the experience. “It benefits me, the dogs and the residents, it's win, win, win. As well as being involved in the Canine Pet Therapy programme,

Lili also manages Share my Pet, an online service connecting dog owners with dog lovers, and is in the process of starting a Kid Safe programme in local primary schools. Lili says this is about reducing the number of dog bites in New Zealand. “I’m doing everything I’m passionate about.” Lili says she hopes that, one day, every rest home has a live-in dog. “I know if I end up in a home my heart would be longing to see and pat a dog.”

Kindy gets their new home Locally Owned and Operated

It’s taken three years, but Rutherford St Kindergarten finally has a new home. The not-for-profit, communitybased early childhood centre has moved 200m up the road from their old home at Unite Church, to the former Rutherford St Chapel. Yesterday marked their first “official” day in the new building, which will be formally opened tonight. The kindergarten was forced to search for a new site in 2016, with their landlord wanting to redevelop the land. Manager and head teacher Mary Davies says it’s been a long process but it’s been “worth it”, with the new site providing much more space, sun and room for growth. “It’s a fantastic space and the bigger location will also allow us to increase our enrolments from 27 children to 32.” She says the children are chuffed with the new set-up too, which is complete with a slide, sandpit, playground, spacious indoor area and the familiar mural from “old kindy”. Mary credits the children being so settled in the new environment to involving them in the

Photo: Kate Russell. whole process. “We visited often and incorporated their ideas into the new space, which has helped them to settle instantly.” Rutherford St Kindergarten is one of Nelson’s oldest early childhood institutions and had been at their previous site since 1961.

Mary says the move was “colossal” but achievable, thanks to some very dedicated board members, and the community, who rallied behind them with donations, manpower and support. “We’ve had lots of resources donated to us, such as whiteware,

tables, chairs, a microwave, a kitchen set and carpet. It’s been fantastic.” They have also had plenty of help from local businesses offering their services for free or at a heavily discounted rate, and community workers helping with

the landscaping. “We couldn’t have done this without the community’s help.” The kindergarten’s official opening is on tonight, 31 July, 5pm at 173a Rutherford St. Supporters, colleagues and kindergarten families are invited to join them.

Double tragedy for Nelson woman A year on from the death of her husband, Nelson woman Emily Campbell did not expect to face death again so soon. Her "incredibly hilarious" and "beautiful" young son Zephaniah died unexpectedly on July 1. The toddler was almost two. Emily says doctors thought he might have suffered from a small heart arrhythmia, without symptoms, and when he caught a virus his heart shut down during the fever. “It was nothing we could foresee or do anything about," she says. It was a scary, shocking ordeal and she said, at first, her heart did not want to go on.” Emily had already lost her husband Craig Campbell to cancer in July last year. to be a husband and a father." It was awesome that in his last years he got to do that, she said. "He absolutely adored us. He was very loving, kind and gentle. " Craig Campbell loved having adventures with his family, she says. "He was very much an enjoy the moment type of person." The couple really appreciated life because of what they faced after he was diagnosed with melanoma several years ago, Emily says. At the beginning of last year he started getting really sick, she says. "The cancer had just spread everywhere and six months later he died. "The thing that got me through that was my relationship with God.

After everything she has been through, the brave mum said she still trusted in God's bigger plan. "I didn't think I would walk through another death so soon,"

she says. All of her children were such healthy kids - "just full of life, fun, strong boys". Zephaniah was strong-willed but also quite peaceful, she says. Just like his father he loved people - he was really communicative, even without words.

"He would just light up around people." "Everyone who knew him would remark on what a happy boy he was," she says. "He was always smiling." His two older brothers, Elijah, 5, and Gabriel, 3, adored him. "They also gave each other a hard time and had fun," Emily says. "They really loved playing and making each other laugh." She credits her family, friends and church community as being a huge support. "That support has been amazingly helpful for me to walk forwards." Emily said she had not thought of starting a Givealittle page until two important people from different parts of her life suggested it to her on the same day. "There are lots of people who aren't right here with me, but they are heartbroken and they really want to do something. "I have so appreciated the love and support in whatever way people want to show it. "It helps my heart hugely, and practically, obviously." - NZ Herald

More Nelson supermarkets phase out plastic bags

Single use plastic bags are becoming an endangered species at Nelson supermarkets. All Countdown stores in Nelson will phase out single-use plastic carrier bags from August 13, joining four other Countdown stores in Motueka and Blenheim to make the move. A further 35 stores across New Zealand will join the roll out then, which means nearly a third of all Countdown supermarkets

will have made the change to reusable bags. Mayor Rachel Reese says the initiative is an example of the role the business community can play in ensuring our environment is healthy and protected. “And in supporting a sustainable Nelson.” Fresh Choice Nelson has also phased out plastic bags, in a move estimated to cut out about 3000 plastic bags a day in its store, or about 1 million a year. Tourism spend on rise in region Tourists are providing a huge boost to the local economy. The latest Monthly Regional Tourism Estimates released by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE), show that tourism spend for Nelson is estimated to be $379 million for the year to June 2018. This is up eight per cent compared with the year to June 2017. MBIE manager of sector trends Mark Gordon says that of this tourism spend in the year to June 2018, international visitors spent $135 million (up 22 per cent compared with the year to June 2017), and domestic tourists spent $244 million (up two per cent) in that period. “When it comes to the monthly expenditure, tourism spend in Nelson for the month of June 2018 is up 18 per cent compared with the month of June 2017,” says Mark. The figures show a similar story in the Tasman region. Tourism spend for Tasman is estimated to be $332 million for the year to June 2018, up 13 per cent compared with the year to June 2017. Mark says that of this tourism spend in the year to June 2018, international visitors spent $157 million (up 36 per cent compared with the year to June 2017), and domestic tourists spent $175 million (down two per cent) in that period. This is up 20 per cent compared with the month of June 2017.

Faye Tudberry Simple fact is, if it's not marked as an official pedestrian crossing, then any pedestrian who walks out in front of any traffic can be ticketed for j-walking, maybe the council and police need to educate people on the differences between any official pedestrian crossing and a courtesy crossing. Major Ransfield This is a funny one here in Nelson! Often, even as a pedestrian, the cars just stop for you even when you wave them on if you can see that it’s a pain for the car to stop. I’ve even seen pedestrians get mad when the cars don’t stop! It’s a courtesy crossing not a pedestrian crossing, so there is no legal requirement for cars to stop, they have the right of way. Nelson Matters The Green Party has become a tragic comedy in stating they will vote for a bill that its coleader Marama Davidson stated last week was “undemocratic” and “threatened democracy”. The ironically named Electoral Integrity Bill, demanded by Winston Peters, gives the power to a party leader to dismiss any MP the leader believes has acted in a way that distorts the proportionality of Parliament. The principal that voters and voters alone get to hire or fire MPs goes back 330 years to the Bill of Rights. This Bill also breaches the International Covenant on Civil and Political

Rights and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. How can the New Zealand Green Party credibly campaign for such rights abroad when they are voting against them at home? The Green Party is also trashing its heritage. Founding co-leader Rod Donald described the same Bill in 2001 as “the most draconian, obnoxious, antidemocratic, insulting piece of legislation ever inflicted on Parliament” and that “it represents everything the Greens opposed.” It is not just the hypocrisy of the Green Party that should worry New Zealanders about this Bill. It has been vehemently opposed

by 21 constitutional experts from all our universities, the Human Rights Commission, the Law Society and the Clerk of the House of Representatives. Even Government Minister and Labour MP Hon David Parker says the Bill “will have a chilling effect on expression of dissenting views by MPs.” This law would be unconstitutional in Germany, the home of MMP, and most of the world. The few countries that have these are despots like Zimbabwe, Pakistan and Sierra Leone. MPs in these countries have been dismissed for speaking out about corruption, for calling

Someone needs to stand up to Winston. I will be opposing it with every bone in my body. I will not give up until it is repealed. Bring a street art message from outer space Charles Anderson Hannah Starnes was only a short while into her first ever piece of street art when someone asked her if she was graffitiing the wall. Hannah, an artist and rowing coach, promised the passer-by that the end result would be

good. But she was also allowed to be there. As part of a fun competition by Resene and Keep New Zealand Beautiful, Hannah put forward a design to put her hand to a wall in Nelson. “It was awesome,” she says. “At first it was a bit daunting, but I loved every minute of it.”

future.” The piece on Rutherford St features a large spaceman coming back to earth to visit a magnolia tree that he has planted. Just adjacent to the art work is an actual magnolia tree which sits in the carpark next to Summit Real Estate.

She has also had great feedback from people. “I’m stoked with the result. Now I just want to do some more.” Hannah says there are so many walls around Nelson that it makes sense to fill them up with art. “And Nelson is super artsy, so why not?”

Katy loses cancer battle Kate Russell After more than a three-year battle, former Nelson woman Katy Cobb (nee Delaney), has lost her battle to cervical cancer. The 33-year-old, who was living in Australia, passed away on Sunday evening at Logan Hospital, in Queensland. Katy was first diagnosed with cancer in March 2015 after experiencing symptoms for several weeks. Her intuition told her it was something severe, and sure enough she had a 5cm tumour on her cervix. The message from Police is clear: "Don’t drive distracted, buckle up, watch your speed, and never drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol.” This comes after a four-day operation that took place in Nelson last week where the Tasman Traffic Alcohol Group conducted checkpoints in Nelson City, Richmond and Mo-

tueka between Wednesday and Saturday nights. Police processed 16 drivers for excess breath alcohol. Eleven of these drivers returned a reading exceeding 400mcg of alcohol, which leaves them facing court action and a mandatory loss of licence for at least six months. The others received a $200 fine

and 50 demerit points. Team leader of Tasman Road Policing Group senior sergeant Grant Andrews says it’s alarming to see people behave this way. "This sort of behaviour puts all road users at risk, not just the drivers, people need to plan ahead and not drive if they’re going out for a few drinks," he says.

Stoke teen takes on Irish dancing world Kate Russell Irish dancing comes naturally to Stoke teenager Jaymee-Niamh Smith. The 15-year-old with Irish heritage has only been dancing for two-and-a-half years, but she is already taking on the world. Jaymee-Niamh returned from the WIDA (World Irish Dance Association) Melbourne Open Feis last month with an impressive eight gold medals and two trophies. Nicknamed ‘The Unicorn Feis’, the open platform competition is for all Irish dancers in Australia and beyond - and JaymeeNiamh was the only representative from New Zealand. Primary horn pipe, slip jig, light jig, single jig and treble jig are just some of the titles she conquered, and she also earned two distinctions in her dancing exams while she was there. “I was really happy. I didn’t know what I was going to be up against, so I was nervous,” she says. “But it was nice meeting everyone and I was invited onto a

six-hour dance workshop which I really enjoyed. It was a good experience.” According to her grandfather and biggest fan, Chris Arnold, who accompanied her to the competition, she is a “natural” at it and has the dedication to go far.

The Nayland College student says it was her older cousin who inspired her to pick up Irish dancing. “I tried it for a bit when I was younger, but I was never really interested in it. But my cousin was dancing, and I thought it would be fun to start again. It just

carried on from there.” Jaimee-Niamh trains up to four hours a week and admits to also “dancing under the desk” at school. She has no face-to-face lessons - they all take place via Skype through her coach Ricky Lawless in the UK. She says at shows, dancers are required to wear a full face of make-up, including dark

foundation and red lipstick. Some must wear wigs, but luckily Jaymee-Niamh has been naturally blessed with the “right hair”. Her Irish roots go back to when her great-great-great grandfather immigrated to New Zealand from Ireland in 1842. She says she enjoys learning about the culture and plays Irish music on the piano and guitar. “Dancing is also a good way to keep fit. I

like the cool steps you get to do and watching people’s faces when I’m performing - making them feel blown away.” Jaimee-Niamh is hoping to earn a scholarship to represent New Zealand at the next Irish Dancing World Championships in Ireland. “My goals are to go to worlds, be in Lord of the Dance and maybe open my own studio one day.”

Usually when students spend hours preparing their performance for two hours on the stage, you might expect them to at least have a script. But this time six high schools will put up their sharpest minds and quickest wits to battle it out in an all-improvised extravaganza. The Tasman Regional Theatresports finals are on and those students are preparing themselves for a flight into the unknown. “Come and watch the local colleges blow your mind with their improv skills,” says organiser Nikkie Whitehead. “Everything you see will be made up on the spot and never to be seen again.” Nikkie says that the skills the students exhibit are ones that are great for life. “It’s great for working as a group, being creative, being quick thinking and being a really good listener.” Improv works off each player trying to build scenes with their fellow players on stage. But rather than trying to be a show pony, the schools will

After 15 defences, Nelson loses Moascar Cup Jonty Dine After two years and 15 defences, Nelson College has lost the Moascar Cup. One of the longest reigns in modern history came to an end on Saturday as a clinical Christchurch Boys side defeated the holders 22-12. Nelson were out-muscled up front and out-gunned out wide by the country’s second biggest All Black factory, defending UC champions and the inaugural winners of the historic trophy. Nelson manager Peter Grigg says they were beaten by a better side. “I guess there is only one certainty when you win trophies like that, you’re going to lose it someday.” Skipper Anton Segner was visibly dejected following the loss. “Very disappointing but credit to Christchurch, they were the better team and simply outplayed us.”

Anton says the ball handling skills of the Christchurch backs blew his side off the park. “We always knew that was going to be their strength and we just weren’t able to match it with them.” The sides both laid down spinetingling challenges prior to kick off, with the Nelson Supporters Club in full voice. The visitors opened the scoring through fullback Max Hughes after a slick blindside move in just the tenth minute. Nelson were dominated at the breakdown, blown off their own ball, leading to a second for Christchurch. The challenges began to string some beautiful offloads together, running riot through the Nelson defence. Christchurch captain Louie Chapman says Nelson deserved to hold the coveted cup as long as they did. “We knew coming up here would be no easy feat, we know the history behind it and how tough it

was going to be, so it’s a really proud moment.” The Moascar Cup has been the most prestigious prize in college rugby since World War One. The cup was first contested in 1920, when Palmerston Boys met Christchurch Boys at Athletic Park in Wellington. Christchurch won the match by one “force down.” Nelson won the prestigious prize in June 2016 with an 18-3 win over holders Timaru Boys High School. The side went on to defend the cup 15 times, three defences in 2016, seven in 2017 and five this year. After a two-year absence, the Mike Pero Nelson Giants will head to the capital this week for the New Zealand NBL finals series. The Nelson franchise finished the regular season in second spot with a 14-4 record to book a semi-final date with the Southland Sharks on Saturday. Giants general manager Bill Dahlberg says the top four finish has been a culmination of 18 months of hard work restoring the Giants. “It’s exactly what we were planning for, year one of our three-year plan was to get into the finals and we have done that.”

At just 14, Cristian Benitez dropped out of school and spent three years washing cars to support his family. Now the former Columbian refugee is living his dream, playing football while he gets an education. The 19-year-old moved to Nelson with his family 18 months ago from Ecuador, where they had spent three years struggling to get by. “It was a hard time for me and my family,” says Cristian. “But then I came to New Zealand and realized everything was different, the food, the people, everything. I love Nelson, life is a lot better.” In Ecuador, Cristian took on a full-time job. His father, a builder, struggled to get by on low wages while his mother stayed at home with his younger sister. “I started to work which was hard because I was still young, the pay was low, and it was hard for my parents.” Cristian made the sacrifice so his two younger brothers could stay in school.

Political strife in Colombia forced his family to seek refuge in neighbouring Ecuador. An estimated 360,000 Colombians remain living as refugees, mostly in Ecuador, after being forced out of their homes by a civil war which has been raging since the 1960s and displaced millions. Now attending Nelson College, Cristian is learning English, studying NCEA and making a huge impression on the sporting scene. Coach Davor Tavich says the striker has been an integral part of the 1st XI’s success. “He has made a big difference, he is a big, strong lad and works very hard. He has scored a few goals lately and found some great form, he is getting better and better every week.” Davor says, as well as a gifted footballer, Cristian is also a very nice young man and has fitted in seamlessly with the team. “He has been welcomed by everybody and his English is very good, the boys enjoy having him around. He’s humble, he brings the quality of a young man who has been through a lot in his young life.” After an unstable beginning to

his life, Cristian says he plans to stay in Nelson. “I want to stay here and create a life for me and my family.” Undecided on a career at this point, Cristian says he will focus on his education and improving his English. Cristian’s success on the football field has also inspired his younger brothers to take up the sport and he backs them to follow his path into the 1st XI. “They are my biggest fans and we love each other and support each other.” Cristian has been playing football all his life, admitting the level is a little higher in football-mad Columbia. Cristian says it was hard to leave his friends and his football team. He was at the time playing for América de Cali, in the National U12 league. “It was the highest level I could be playing at, so I was very proud, and it was hard to go.” However, Cristian says as long as he had a ball, he could make a place home. “Football is like a language for me, everywhere I go I just play football and I make friends, which is amazing.”

Hockey season heats up Jonty Dine The club hockey competition is heating up as the scramble for top of the table spots ensues. Operations manager Fabian Amor says the 2018 season has been highly competitive as it heads into week 13 with the club competition set to wrap up on August 26. Tasman has been untouchable in the men’s first division, winning all 10 matches so far with a resounding 72 goal differential. They sit alone at the top of the table on 30 points, nine clear of second-placed Federal. It is a similar story in the women’s premier competition, the unbeaten Federal having netted 102 goals and only con-

ceding four. Fabian says the division three women’s competition is very close at the moment, with three teams, RewaFederal, Firebirds and Tasman Black, fighting for top spot. “In the division four Mens, Garin College is playing really good hockey, with fast speed and effective execution at the circle while the division four women is a head to head battle between Tasman and Federal." In the boys, Waimai United have set the pace with eight wins from eight games and a 72 goal differential. “They have shown great performances at every game, it is a very well organised team with very good structure and very talented young players.” Meanwhile in division five

girls, Tasman have been dominant through the whole season dropping only one game to sit six points ahead. This past week also saw senior Nelson rep teams travel to Blenheim for the Maadi Cup. The decider between West Coast and Nelson was a thriller, coming down to the wire with West Coast being awarded a penalty corner in the last minute of the game. Nelson defended stoutly to come away with a five-all draw and win the Cup. The region is also preparing to host the Hatch Cup later this year.

Opinion: Changes needed for club rugby Peter Jones, Marlborough App sports journalist

Tasman rugby must take another look at their premier club rugby competition format. The two-round option, which they adopted for the 2018 season and which concluded last week, was not a success. Although some highly-competitive rugby was played, the general consensus around the club scene was that the season was too short, with a scarcity of home games which impacted potential bar takings, the lifeblood of any club, and made recruitment more difficult. Other clubs, such as Central and Wanderers who both made slow

starts to the season and paid the price, naturally favoured a longer schedule. It is easy to say they should have been better prepared entering the season, but the abbreviated 2018 format left very little room for on-going team development. In 2017, Nelson and Marlborough’s division one clubs engaged in a three-round competition. The first round was a sub-union competition, points carrying forward into round two, a series of cross-over matches with rivals from over the hill. At the end of those rounds the Tasman Trophy semifinals and final were played, followed by a final round of sub-union matches leading into respective Marlbor-

This year the first round was purely local play, then sub-union semis and a final, followed by a second and final round leading into the Tasman Trophy semis and final. The introduction of Tasman Trophy premiership, championship and bowl play-offs involving all competing teams was a welcome innovation, designed to increase the number of potential games, however overall the amount of rugby played was greatly reduced. Looking towards next season, I would suggest it is time to go back to the future and revisit the 2017 format. I understand that Tasman and

some clubs are keen to make the Tasman Trophy final the highlight and end-point of the season, but there are other factors to be considered. The "tribalism” of the sub-union finals, feeding off community rivalry within the same province, can’t be overlooked. Neither can the benefits of ending the season with a showpiece game on home soil involving two local teams. Given time, the Tasman Trophy will find its place in the order of things, but club and fan base response evolves, it can’t be manufactured. With the club season being squeezed into a narrower window by sub-union and Mitre 10

Cup commitments, finding the necessary playing days to incorporate three full rounds will require some creativity on the part of the administrators. It will also take some buy-in from the clubs, many of whom have expressed displeasure to me with the current set-up. They must play a stronger hand in shaping their own future. When announcing the revised format for 2018 Tasman Rugby boss Tony Lewis said he had some reservations about the new structure, then suggested, "We will bring everyone to the table at the end of the season and review how it has gone. It will be an interesting space to watch.” It certainly will.
