Kate Russell She may only be seven-yearsold, but Emma Bernsdorf Solly is very much aware of the impact of single-use plastics on our environment. The Clifton Terrace School student is just one of several involved in a child-led charge to help the school become plastic-free. Last month, Emma spoke at a school assembly about her concerns around single-use plastics in lunch-boxes and challenged both children and parents to find alternatives. Now, compartmented lunchboxes, paper and beeswax wrap and reusable containers have replaced cling-film, chip packets and muesli bar wrappers. Emma says she wanted to do something to help after her mum taught her about what single-use plastics are doing to the environment. And, it is also Plastic Free July. “Plastic bags are bad for our environment and lots end up in the sea and harm sea animals,” says Emma. Principal Rob Wemyss says Emma’s petition was a “resounding success”. “The exciting thing regarding

Photo: Kate Russell. children such as Emma is that it is a student voice, and not the voice of adults, that is leading the way. “Although it’s unlikely to be ever become policy, it is certainly an aspect of the school that we hope parents will buy into.” Rob says that children have also challenged staff regarding the amount of plastic that is used to make a glue stick, which is a compulsory stationary item at most schools. “Some classes have already stopped using these and gone back to made-up glue. Other classes will follow suit from the start of 2019.” Students from the school have

also started making and selling beeswax wraps for lunch-boxes, as well as reusable boomerang bags for the local Atawhai Four Square Supermarket. They have also initiated a soft plastic recycling scheme thanks to one eco-conscious senior student, and collect and take all soft plastics to the recycling bins at New World or Countdown each week. The school also have no outdoor rubbish bins and all nonrecyclable rubbish goes home. Emma’s teacher Carol Cowie says she is “very proud” of Emma. “Most children in our class now have plastic-free lunchboxes, which is fantastic.”

Men get their shed

After two-years of searching, Menzshed Nelson/Whakatū have finally found a place to call home and are ready to tackle some community projects. The new shed is an amalgamation between Menzshed Whakatū and Menzshed Nelson and located in the old Reliance Engineering building on Haven Rd. Member Ron ‘Skid’ Eckman says it feels “fantastic” to have a space, and with around a dozen strong regulars, and more on the list, they are looking forward to establishing themselves. “We are fortunate to have the amount of space we’ve got, I’d say other sheds would be quite envious.” Menzshed is a world-wide movement, originating from the ‘shed in a backyard’ scenario encouraging social activities and friendships between men, all while helping the community. A few keen members have already completed several small projects for community groups, even though they are setting up and sourcing tools. “Right now, we are establishing our capability - things like making saw

Then we can get stuck into all sorts of things,” says Ron. They are also building a WorkBox portable work shop container, in partnership with Mitre10 Mega and Boxman, which will allow them to work on offsite projects. And Ron says the shed won’t just benefit the community - but its members, too. “It really gives these men a sense of purpose. They may be a widower at loose end, or a retiree with a wife saying, ‘get out of the house’,” he

says. “It’s also about building relationships with other guys. Not many men would go out to a café together. “The beauty of it is that there are men from so many different backgrounds with different skills, so they can teach others and learn new things, too.” To complete their set-up, the shed is on the lookout for donations of equipment. They have already been gifted a bunch of tools from Menzshed Kapiti, along with an impressive

collection of machinery from an ex-boat builder. “We’ve made him a life member, of course,” laughs Ron. Ron says they would love people to approach them with ideas for projects, but it must be for the good of the community. “We also want to be proactive. Police are issuing a warning to motorists after icy winter conditions across Nelson Tasman cause a spate of crashes around the region. Last Thursday, a 60-year-old woman was flown to Nelson Hospital after a crash at Rai Valley. Then, just after 7am on Wednesday, a truck hit a patch of black ice on the Shenandoah Highway and rolled. The driver was not injured. A car also rolled on Mapua Drive just after 6am on Monday. The male driver was transported by St John Ambulance with moderate injuries and police say the crash report referenced the icy road conditions.Another car went into a bank on Annesbrook Drive just before 7am on Monday and the driver sustained minor injuries. The police spokesperson says any patches of road which appear wet will likely be icy and should be treated as such. “We advise people to check their vehicles and tyres are roadworthy and ensure all windows are completely clear of ice before getting behind the wheel.”

Company raises conflict of interest concern over Greenmeadows contract Charles Anderson A company that unsuccessfully tendered to build Nelson City Council’s $7 million Stoke community centre complained about potential conflicts of interest after it was discovered a person on the team which awarded the contract started a job with successful tenderer soon after. Nelson City Council has released the audit of the tender process on the Greenmeadows Centre project after the contractor came under fire for its management of the build. The project has been delayed by more than six months and parts of the construction have been substandard - having to be redone at the contractor’s cost. The contract was awarded to Auckland-based Watts and Hughes in June 2016 after putting forward a proposal that was between $270,000 and $1.1 million lower than its nearest rival. The tenders were evaluated by a company called Onus. An employee of Onus applied for a job for an unnamed company on June 23, 2016. He told his employer he would be leaving Onus on June 30, discovered the company he was applying for was Watts and Hughes on July 1 and then accepted a position with Watts and Hughes on

August 5. Watts and Hughes won the tender on June 27. After that, one of the unsuccessful tenderers suggested the chain of events may have constituted at conflict of interest. However, the council commissioned an audit of the tender process, which found nothing to suggest this. The audit found Watts and Hughes put forward the best tender on a range of criteria. “I have not identified any inconsistences that would suggest a bias or prejudice has influence the evaluation process,” the report said. The staff member who moved from Onus was not an evaluator of the tenders and he had responded to the job ad after one of the key tender evaluations was already completed, the report said. The audit release comes as Watts and Hughes staff were flown in from Auckland to front media about the project. At the media conference last Friday, director Rob Murphy said that the company would do everything it needed to do to ensure Nelson gets a building that is quality. If there were any issues with the build they would be back to fix it, he said. It was unclear when the full building would be open to the public.

Network Tasman is taking a proactive approach by carrying out a study to gauge the impact of EV charging on peak network loads. This study will help inform its future asset management planning for the region. The most cost-effective way for EV owners to charge their vehicles is by charging them at home overnight. However, public charging stations provide a good option for EV owners who are travelling or who need a top-up charge when they’re out and about. Partnering with ChargeNet NZ from 1 August 2018 z

Network Tasman’s three public fast-charging stations in Nelson, Richmond and Golden Bay will become part of a linked national network of more than 100 fast chargers throughout New Zealand.

The ChargeNet NZ phone app and website will display the availability of chargers and locations, allowing users to plan their route and to see the state of their vehicle charge in progress.

Georgia dances her way to the top Sara Hollyman Nelson dance student Georgia Norriss pliéd her way to the top of the South Island Ballet Awards last weekend. Georgia, 14, out-danced 90 other students to claim the top prize of a dance tuition scholarship and $5000 to put towards furthering her skills. “The competition was amazing, and everyone was so friendly,” she says. “It was a massive surprise to win as the finals were amazing and everyone did so well.” Georgia says, apart from the nerves, she

had a great time at the Christchurch event. “Each dance felt easier and I felt more confident every time I went on stage.” Georgia’s mum, Amanda, says her daughter loves dancing and she would love to pursue dance as a career in some way. “Georgia loves ballet, jazz, contemporary dance and choreography. The money will be used for more ballet training, but we haven’t had the time to formulate a plan just yet.” Laeticia Austin, from the same Nelson dance studio, also reached the finals and was awarded a tuition scholarship.

Dance teacher Louise Hawke says she is proud of the girls for what they’ve achieved after putting in so much hard work. “We’ve worked since the beginning of February on the two routines that the girls had to perform. They’ve been here six days a week to practice. “We’ve had dancers in the finals before but achievement at this level is very gratifying, it’s a credit to all the girls, I couldn’t wish for a better group of dedicated young dancers. We’ve had a very happy time getting them to where they are,” she says.

The Nelson branch of Adama have donated $1000 to the Walk with Us Trust, meaning more local kids will have the shoes they need to succeed. The Nelson branch was recently at an industry conference where there was a quiz night. The winning team could give $1000 to a charity of their choice. Adama won and the Nelson team selected Walk with Us. The charity’s mission is to provide free school and sports footwear to children in need aged between 5 and 13 years in Nelson/Tasman.

Fatal house fire in Nelson: A man died following a house fire in the suburb of Toi Toi on Sunday morning. Emergency services were called to the address on Murphy St just after 11am and the scene was cordoned off. An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway. Police confirmed yesterday that a formal identification process of the man is underway and is expected to be completed today. Scoop the Poop campaign: Nelson City Council says their ‘Scoop the Poop’ month was a success. The campaign ran during June with the aim of rewarding dog owners for picking up their dog’s poop in public places. Altogether, animal control officers spoke to 178 dog walkers, gave out 127 coffee vouchers, 104 doggy-doo bags and issued six warnings for non-compliance and two dog registration notices. There were no infringement notices issued. Clare Barton at NCC says they will most likely run the campaign again. Habitat for Humanity trip to Cambodia: Nelson’s Habitat for Humanity team are still looking for locals who want to have an experience to remember. In November they are organising a trip to Cambodia to help build more houses. Director Rob Silcock says they already have 25 people signed up, but they need between 4-6 more. “We’re keen to top that number up. Even just a few more people would make a huge difference,” he says. Who’s to blame for our ghost town? Who’s to blame? Well, we are. The council doesn’t cause businesses to fail any more than the landlords do. Lack of custom does. And sometimes that’s down to the trader, maybe having an unrealistic expectation of how many other people will like what they like... but it’s often down to the customers’ buying habits. What do we spend money on, why and where? Who are we, the residents of this town? What would draw us to spending money on main street? There are those who are really pinched for money, and they will be drawn to the large low-price outlets. Totally understandable. There are those who are doing ok but money is still an issue. They might enjoy browsing round

the town then go home and find what they want cheaper on-line. Totally understandable. There are those for whom money is not an issue. If they fancy some shopping they might like to fly to Wellington and make a weekend of it. Totally understandable. So who is going to spend money on mainstreet? Or what do we want mainstreet to be that will inspire more spending? Can it turn into something different? I don’t want it to be just banks, travel agents, chemists and phone shops. And god-forbid it be all $2 shops. And I don’t want to just shop in a big mall, which feels like being inside a web-page... no reality to it at all. I want to wander down the street, looking at beautiful window displays, being drawn in here and there... I want the council to have enough mon-

It’s also good for memory and brings out your endorphins! Zumba is 80 percent Latin songs and involves a range of different beats and rhythms within my one hour classes. Seven of the eight family members are or have been in the band, with Helen the drum major, secretary and wardrobe mistress, her son Leif was a piper before he left Nelson, while husband Bryce has been pipe major. Bryce’s son Jayden was drum sergeant until recently, Callum took over as pipe major from Bryce last year, while Torrey is a strong piper and Tiffany, the youngest, plays tenor and bass, and is currently in Canada playing for one of the top world bands. It doesn’t stop there. Jayden’s wife is a senior tenor drummer, while Callum’s girlfriend is the pipe major of the Grade 4 Celtic Pipe Band. “It’s quite amazing really, we all have a common interest, and it has enabled us all to be together in many ways that are unusual for a blended family,” Helen says. “My cousins in Shetland say I’m much more Scottish than they are.”

There are more than 70 people in the Stoke-based Celtic Pipe Band, ranging in ages from 10 to 80. The Band, which started in 2007, has hosted and won national championships in the past. Twenty-nine members will be travelling to the Shanghai Tourism Festival in China from 14 – 19 September. The opening parade of the event is broadcast live on television and radio to an audience of more than 200 million people, which represents an excellent opportunity to represent Nelson on the world stage. Band members are paying their own way to the Festival, while Nelson Mayor Rachel Reese is contributing money from her Mayoral Discretionary Fund, to go towards the cost of uniform shirts, which will include the City of Nelson emblem and Celtic Pipe Band logo, along with a City of Nelson flag.

Recycling collection set to continue

Beware – these are not rubbish bins! Council has public recycling collection points in the city at Millers Acre, central Trafalgar Street, Tahunanui Beach and at Saxton Field.

Exciting changes coming for NBus

We have ongoing issues with the recyclables being contaminated with general rubbish. When this happens, the bins have to be treated as rubbish and end up going to the landfill. There are also general rubbish bins available so please take notice and put your rubbish or recycling in the right bin. It’s a real shame when we have to dispose of it as rubbish, especially for everyone who had done the right thing by recycling their glass, paper, plastic and cans.

A better timetable, a new improved Stoke Loop and easy to access low floor buses are the first of some exciting changes to the NBus service this year. From 30 July, an improved version of what was called the Stoke Loop will hit the road again. It will be operating during offpeak hours and will cover the majority of Stoke, bringing people into the centre of Stoke for shopping or connection with the Nelson/Richmond services. Brand new low floor buses will be introduced on this and other local routes, making it easier for people who are less mobile, wheelchair and pram users to get on and off the bus more easily. The timetable will also be changing slightly. In response to community feedback, the services between Nelson and Richmond will be operating longer

on the weekends. On the local routes around the city, the timetable has been tweaked slightly. The timing changes will help the network to run more efficiently. These changes will all come into effect from 30 July 2018 and the new timetables will be available soon so check it out at nbus.govt.nz. Later in the year, look forward to the start of electronic ticketing with the ease of tag on/tag off technology and a change in fare zones making it even more affordable to ride the NBus.

Nelson City Council is partnering with the Nelson RSA and the Friends of the Maitai to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the end of WWI, by planting 1500 trees. Bring along a picnic and your enthusiasm, to enjoy musical entertainment and games on the lawn. If you would like to help plant trees, please bring a spade (though extras will be provided) and a sturdy pair of shoes. Winter time is action time, and Council’s environmental programmes are in full swing. These activities are a great way to get you, your family and friends involved in looking after our environment. Chair of the Works and Infrastructure Committee, Stuart Walker says, “Given the huge uptake and enthusiasm Nelsonians have shown for recycling, which has increased by 40 per cent since the introduction of wheelie bins in 2016, Council wants to continue the service and carry on that momentum while every attempt is made to find new markets for recyclables. “However we also encourage people to consider their options when purchasing. Choosing something reusable or with less packaging will also make a difference.” A further update on the global recycling situation and its effect on us locally will be brought back to the Committee in early 2019.

The Works and Infrastructure Committee received a report outlining the effects of changes China, one of the largest markets for recyclables, has made through their National Sword initiative. Since January, China has given the world notice that they won’t continue to accept their recycling and this has resulted in a sudden and steep drop in commodity prices for fibre (paper/cardboard) and certain plastics. The Committee has approved to continue the residential collection service whilst contractors seek other markets for recyclables. In the meantime, the Committee is recommending that Council covers the extra funding resulting from the

Church Street upgrade to be part of wider city plan The Works and Infrastructure Committee has adopted a recommendation that any upgrade of Church Street should be included in the City Centre Programme Plan which is due to be completed in the 2018/19 financial year.

Nelson’s kerbside recycling collection has been confirmed for 2018/19.

New pedestrian refuge planned for Waimea Road Since March 2016 Council has been looking at options to make it safer and easier for pedestrians to cross Waimea Road. One pedestrian refuge has been installed, as part of the York Stream stormwater upgrade, at the intersection of Waimea Road and Boundary Road. Council staff have been assessing the section of Waimea Road between Tukuka Street and Boundary Road to find a possible location for another pedestrian refuge. This is quite a challenge due to the need for access to a high number of private driveways, high traffic volumes and safety concerns for turning motorists. The Works and Infrastructure Committee has given approval to move to consultation with property owners on a preferred location for a new refuge. This is opposite 186/179 Waimea Road. Chair of the Works and Infrastructure Committee Stuart Walker says, “There are lots of challenges around finding

suitable crossing points on this busy road. Staff have identified what they believe is the safest location for a new refuge. I now hope residents will work with us so we can get something built and make it safer for everyone in the neighbourhood.” Please note: Pedestrian refuges are not pedestrian crossings. Motorists are not advised to stop for pedestrians (but must be able to if needed) so there is no delay to traffic flow. The refuge provides clear lines of sight for pedestrians and a safe place to wait in the middle of the road as they cross one lane at a time.

The Committee received a report on the project indicating that the total cost of the full upgrade of Church Street was now estimated at $1.33m, which would require an additional $551,000 of unbudgeted funding. The requirement for extra funding resulted from a combination of factors; the project tenders coming in higher than expected, additional requirements identified during the detailed design process and the discovery of hazardous coal tar material within the road.

In 2016, Council received a proposal for the improvement of the Church Street urban environment from property and business owners. Staff have since been working in partnership with these property owners/occupiers to develop a design. The work completed to date can be included for consideration in the City Centre Programme Plan. The Programme Plan is due to be developed within the next 12 months and will look at improvement projects across the city as a whole.

Tahunanui Pathways preferred route adopted The Works and Infrastructure Committee adopted the recommendation for the preferred route for the Tahunanui Pathways project to progress to the detailed design phase. The route was developed in conjunction with a community advisory group to ensure it meets the local needs. This option will improve walking and cycling facilities on Annesbrook Drive, Parkers Road, Muritai Street and Waikare Street. The proposal is to widen the existing footpath to a shared path on the southern end of Annesbrook Drive. On Parkers Road, Muritai and Waikare Streets, the preferred approach is a two-way separated cycleway. The next stage is to prepare a more detailed design and consult with the residents directly affected by the proposed changes. This will influence any final changes before progressing to the construction phase.

What do these triangles mean? It’s not the Bermuda triangle, it’s a parking triangle. These white painted lines are used on the side of roads to indicate where there may not be room for normal size vehicles to park without blocking driveways.

The dental professionals at Do Gooder are making steps towards building healthy, sustainable practises in their industry and in the community. Do Gooder’s journey began with a lightbulb moment when co-workers were busy throwing out another pile of plastic from its dental practise. They decided to help reduce wastage by sourcing good products. These included ecofriendly bamboo toothbrushes (Ecobrush), which are carefully crafted from renewable and sustainable bamboo, and have nylon bristles which are essential

for looking after teeth. After its bristles have been removed, the toothbrush is fully biodegradable. There’s also a height restriction of 5.5 metres, so most of the sections will be occupied by single storey homes, so sun angles aren’t affected. The sections vary in size from 360 square metres right up to 700 square metres. We had to create no further impact on the storm water system than what was already there, so there’s quite a large sway of the ground that’s shaped and landscaped for a general purposes reserve, and also the greenway which follows the stream all the way up. On the southern edge of Richmond, interest in a large, picturesque subdivision has exceeded expectations. Created by developer Arizona Land Limited, the premium 140 section Hart Rise Subdivision on Paton Road, is in close proximity to the Richmond CBD and numerous walking and biking trails which weave along the foothills. Back in 2016, when the first stage of Hart Rise was released in August, the demand was such that the 50 available sections sold in just 24 hours, subject to Resource Consent being granted and titles being issued. The sections which ranged in size from 400 to 700 square metres were sold by Summit Real Estate (Richmond) for an average $255,000. Since then Stages 2 (36 sites) and Stage 3 (38 sites) have also sold and have reflected a significant increase in values from the first stage. The remaining Stage 4 sections (16 sites) have not yet been offered to the market. “The demand for the sites was created by the lack of available residential land on the market for subdivisions,” says the spokesperson for Arizona Land Limited, Gordon Webb. “It took Arizona Land Ltd 5 years to get the land rezoned for residential development. The big issue was water supply, with no planned system until 2032, we had to design our own system. Essentially based on a night-fill supply to a large reservoir in the southern corner, from where it is pumped to each allotment. Once we had an agreement with council, it was

Chings Contracting Ltd has been the lead contractor for Arizona Land Ltd’s major development – the Hart Rise Sudivision in Richmond. Stage One included key infrastructural work including stormwater and sewerage, kerbing and footpaths, power and phone cabling and the construction of a large reservoir and pumping station. As soon as this happened, the model changed; there’s also a lot of funding restrictions – council can only fund so much infrastructure because water supply is a major challenge for Richmond South. Hart Rise has a had a number of on sales, some of these being before titles were issued, which reflects the shortage in the marketplace. Richmond’s gone through a huge growth spurt, and that’s been driven in two ways: natural migration to the NelsonTasman region, but also because Nelson and Stoke have run out of flat land – so we’ve really had a double whammy. Richmond’s growth has caught a lot of people by surprise because there’s been a reasonably urgent need for infrastructure and rezoning to support the town’s expansion. It was quite a mission to rezone the area, but council has been really pleased with the result. Council has opened up at lot of ground to cope with the increased demand. Basically, it’s a supply and demand model that has been created by a lack of flat land in Nelson and Stoke, and a subsequent surge in interest for flat land in Richmond.

The 38 sites in Stage 3 are also all sold, and the remaining 16 stages in Stage 4 have not yet been offered to the market – these are under construction and Summit is currently taking the names of interested buyers. The New Zealand Breakers will be one of five NBL teams participating in the NBA preseason with a game against the Phoenix Suns in Arizona on October 3. The side was overlooked in 2017 after the NBL secured three pre-season games against NBA sides, Melbourne United, the Perth Wildcats and the Sydney Kings selected to represent the league. Finn says he was still processing the announcement. “It’s a bit surreal, I don’t think it will sink in till I’m over there.”

The 22-year-old believes his Breakers side are capable of challenging the Phoenix franchise. “I’m really excited and just want to get a win.” However, Delany says, win or lose, the chance to rub shoulders with some of the biggest names in the game will be a huge learning experience. “We have to believe in ourselves and just play our game, because anything’s possible.” Finn says the Suns side is stacked with talent, Devin Booker and Trevor Ariza among the superstars he is looking forward to testing his skills against. Tasman United chairman steps down Jonty Dine The man who lead the charge to bring national league football back to Nelson has stepped aside after two "pretty demanding" seasons. Mark Sheehan oversaw the creation of the Tasman United franchise and the region’s return to top tier football. He says his time at the helm has been very hands on and taken up a lot of time, but he was able to achieve what he wanted. “The idea was to get enough funds from year two so as to employ someone as an operations manager, which was done with Matt Campbell who is pretty well known in football circles.” The club finished fifth in last year's competition and last week announced the appointment of new coach Andy Hedge. Mark says Tasman United are in a great position. “[Andy] is a coach of exceptional

calibre, and now we have an operations manager as well as a very experienced and skilled committee to assist him. It's exciting.” Mark says the side has been very well supported, which has been a highlight of his tenure. “Nelsonians just love to get in behind their teams. “The number of fans who turned up every home game just to support the team, that took me by surprise a bit.” His favourite memory was playing Auckland City at Trafalgar Park. As the game wore on, Auckland were bringing on All Whites from the bench, but it was Tasman substitute Nicolas Abot, an Argentine night porter from Paradiso backpackers, who made the difference, scoring a 93rd minute equaliser. “It was an amazing thing to be involved with.” While he says he has taken plenty of personal satisfaction from the rebirth of national league football

We’ve always said, each season we are only 22 wins away from playing Real Madrid.” Mark says he won’t disappear from the Tasman United scene entirely. “I think my business partner and family will enjoy less of me talking constantly about Tasman United, but I’ll definitely remain involved, either cooking sausages or helping with the funding.” Nelson Bays Football general manger Nic Foster says Mark is one of the main reasons National League Football returned to Nelson after such an extended break. “He worked tirelessly to ensure Tasman United’s success on and off the field.” Nic says Mark has been incredible in terms of making sure the franchise was well represented at the higher levels. “It’s because of guys like him that Nelson Football is in the position it’s in today.”

Young guns going for bulls-eye Locally Owned and Operated

Jonty Dine A team of young darts players are challenging the stereotype that it’s just a game for old men drinking at the pub. Sun City Darts Club members Brayden Skurr, 15, Joel Hawkins, 11, Steve Jenner, 13, and Nicola Turner, 14, will compete at the New Zealand Dart Council’s Junior and Youth Championships in Whakatane this weekend. The quartet are still relative novices in the sport, but are already setting their sights high. Steve, the most experienced of the team, only picked up the

game four years ago after playing with his grandad. “I looked at the sport and really enjoyed it. I got to know the players and they gave me a pair of darts which I started throwing and just went from there,” he says. The Nelson College student already has a host of accolades to his name and hopes to add to his impressive resume this weekend. Steve models his game on his hero, Dutchman Michael van Gerwen. “He’s very inspiring, brings a lot of enjoyment to the game, he makes you feel like you are there watching him.”

Joel, the newest and youngest member of the club, is still in his first season with Sun City. He says he enjoys watching the drama unfold when watching darts on TV. Joel says he finds the biggest challenge can be dealing with the psychological warfare of the sports “older fellas”. “They try to get in your head, but I do my best not to let them.” Brayden, also in his debut darts season, says his father was influential in bringing him in front of the board. The Waimea College student says he loves the social aspect as well

as the competitive nature of darts. He dreams of playing darts professionally one day and draws inspiration from one of the biggest names in the game, Phil Taylor. Like his clubmates, Brayden is not going into the weekend’s competition with any preconceived targets. “I just want to do the best I can,” he says. Nicole is currently in her second season with Sun City. While aiming for a place, Nicole says she will just be happy to go out there and give it a good crack. Team manager

Tony Manihera says the young guns show the sport can be for everyone. “It’s great, it shows that there is a demand for juniors to get involved, for many years it has been perceived as a drinking game for older men.” Tony says the young players are continuing the strong tradition of the Sun City Darts Club. “We have had some top players come out of the club and with the state of it at the moment, we should continue to do so.”
