A Rocks Rd blackspot made up of silt, water and slime has caused serious injury and near death to

at least three people in the last few months with some worried when it will claim someone’s life. “The thing I’m worried about is that someone will die there just because of a little puddle,” says Kirsten Boswijk who rode

through the spot last September. She slid off her bike and broke her pelvis. “I was really lucky that there wasn’t much traffic, just a motorbike and another guy who picked me up,” she says. “I’m worried

that someone isn’t going to be so lucky because it’s quite a busy road and there are a lot of trucks there. There is not much anyone can do about it if that happens.” She says, if it wasn’t for the people who stopped, her situation could

have been much more serious. “I really want to thank them but I don’t know their names.” NZTA, which manages the road, says it has put a sign up saying it

Jess Fulford thought she heard a high-pitched squeak as she slipped into Tasman Bay on Sunday morning for her morning swim. Maybe it was just in her head, but it definitely sounded like a dolphin. She and two other friends planned on swimming through The Cut from the Nelson Yacht Club and around Haulashore Island. Then, as they got closer to Fifeshire Rock, Jess noticed there were a lot of paddleboarders around. “They were saying there were dolphins around,” recalls Jess. Sure enough, the swimmers looked across the water and saw

some marine mammals breaching the surface of the water. This would be a great chance to swim with dolphins, they thought. So they carried on towards the splashing, with Roger Golding out in front. “Then, literally, an orca breached right in front of Roger,” Jess says. “It was just this huge picture of black and white. “We thought ‘oh my god, that’s not a dolphin’.” The grouping of about nine orca all swam in through The Cut at about 8.30am and proceeded to get close up to Rocks Rd, much to the delight of onlookers. Judi Bagust was on her morning walk on her last day on holiday in Nelson when she saw a crowd gathered along the road. Then she saw what all the fuss was about.

move so slowly and are so peaceful.” She hopped aboard a random person’s paddleboard to get a better look at the pod. “It just looked like they were everywhere.” Stingrays are a favourite food of orca and Tasman Bay’s tidal estuaries make it a good environment for hunting. But that also concerned Jess who thought that the rays might be stirred up. So, they took a long swim back – avoiding the coastline as much as they could. “By the end of it we had covered about 5km, so we were glad that the swim was worth it and for the rest on the paddleboard.” Head to the Nelson Weekly Facebook page to check out a video of the close encounter.

If he was looking the other way there is no way he would have avoided going over the top of me.” The cyclist said he had ridden through puddles “countless times” on his way to work and never had an issue. But he thought there might have been less road sweeping going on. At the site there is constant water flowing down the cliff causing green algae to form. Even when the sun is shining there is a puddle which is still slippery if you step in it. It is understood that the puddle has also claimed a police officer on foot who fell and seriously injured his hip while attending a call out on Rocks Rd. An NZTA spokesperson said

Photo: Charles Anderson. it was aware of the issue and it would be solved in the broader Rocks Road repairs and rebuild project which is due to get underway next month. “This work will see the area concerned re-laid to new levels, improved drainage and the roadway resurfaced.” During the day the highway between the Basin Reserve and Magazine Point will be two lanes and 30kmh at all times. It will reduce to one lane over night with Stop/Go traffic management in place. There will be no cycle lanes, however, the walkway will remain intact, except during underpinning of the seawall at Magazine Point. Cyclists will need to walk along the walkway or cycle with the traffic in the centre of the lane. The work will take place from

7pm to 7am when traffic volume is at its lowest along Rocks Rd. It is expected to take seven weeks to complete. The NZTA spokesperson encouraged cyclists to take care until this area is made safer. But Kirsten rode past the spot again on Sunday and noticed the puddle was still there. “It needs to be sorted and fast. At least put some cones around it or something.” Nelson city councillor and the Green Party’s 2017 Nelson candidate Matt Lawrey said that while it was good the problem was going to be fixed, the potentially lethal situation highlighted the need for the city and NZTA to get on with building a shared pathway and cycleway around the waterfront.

‘Nelson needs a dog park’ Kate Russell Reporter

There are six in Christchurch and even two in Greymouth - but Nelson is lagging behind when it comes to dedicated dog parks, says one local man. Andrew Cooke is the owner of three Siberian Huskies and would like to see Nelson City Council establish a dedicated dog exercise area in the city. He spoke out after the article the Nelson Weekly published last week about the growing doggy-

doo problem in Glenduan, with two disgruntled residents taking matters into their own hands. He says that an enclosed, dedicated dog park could help solve the issue by drawing dog owners away from problem areas, as well as provide a safe place for dogs to exercise. “The crazy part is that there are two dog parks in a small place like Greymouth, and none here,” he says. “I can have my dogs off their leads in certain places but a dog park is something that I have wanted for many years in this region.

“There is a common theme here that we have the dog beach but I find there can be conflict with fishermen with bait hooks in the sea, and there are horses down there now.” Andrew has mooted Branford Park in the Maitai as the “perfect spot” for a dog park to go and says that he would even be happy to voluntary manage it himself. “It’s not used for anything but dog walking. If it was fully fenced and controlled with bins and a dog dispenser it would be really popular.” Other locals have also taken to

social media after last week’s story revealing that Nelson’s doggydoo issue stretches far wider than Glenduan. Jordy Soole says she experiences the problem firsthand, with her job being to cut the grass edges of many of the city’s walking tracks. “Botanical Hill, Grampians, Nile St walkway, Wakapuaka sandflats, Bolwell Reserve and Tahunanui Beach - everywhere you go where dogs are allowed there are huge amounts of dog poo,” she says. “It’s bad everywhere. Some tracks actually smell because there is so much. It’s also not nice for our

crew who get it all over them when cutting with the weed eater. I have lived all over the country and it’s definitely a major problem here.” Some walkers also expressed dog poo is a “common sight” at Isel Park, as well as Saxton Field and the Railway Reserve. Andrew believes says the responsibility does lie with dog owners, although he says the council “could be doing more”. “If an enclosed dog park could help to reduce the problem, then I think it is something that they should be considering.”

NEWS Buskers come to town: The Nelson Buskers Festival kicks off this Thursday February 1, with four days of action around the city. International acts hailing from Australia, Canada, Romania, the USA and New Zealand will be entertaining crowds on Trafalgar St this Thursday and Friday and there will be buskers on the Church Steps on Saturday and Sunday. Nelson’s spending revealed: Recent data from Westpac has revealed that Nelson spent an average of $892 per customer on shopping during December - one of the lowest spenders in the country and observed the smallest increase (7 per cent) compared to 2016. The data also shows that 36 to 55 year olds spent $1,354, whereas 18 to 35-year-olds spent $682. Overall, The Warehouse was the most popular store per unique transactions, followed by Kmart. School of music renamed: The Nelson School of Music has a new name – it will now be known as the Nelson Centre of Musical Arts. The name change comes with the redevelopment of the facility, aligning with their musical offerings and services for the modern era. Wine experts in Nelson: Some of the world’s top wine experts will be in Nelson for two days of immersion in the NZ industry on February 1 and 2. Horror crashes pile up Brittany Spencer A driver’s quick-thinking saved lives in a multi-car pile-up on the Appleby Highway. Police, St John, and the Fire Service all attended the crash that occurred on Thursday at the Swamp/Bartlett Rd intersection on the Appleby Highway just before 10.15am. It was one of several serious crashes over the past several days. Tasman Senior Sergeant Blair Hall says three cars were following a truck along the road towards Motueka. “The truck went to turn into Bartlett Rd and the three cars behind it slowed down to allow this.” However, a stock truck, travelling behind the cars, failed to see what was happening ahead. The vehicle directly ahead of the stock truck contained a family with two children, aged seven and 11. In an act that possibly saved his children’s lives, the driver saw the stock truck approaching at speed and drove off the road and into a ditch to prevent the truck hitting the back of his vehicle. “These actions no doubt saved his family from serious injury,” says Blair. on, hitting the next vehicle in the line. The impact from the truck caused extensive damage and pushed the second vehicle into the final car. Fortunately, the eight people occupying the three cars involved walked away with only minor injuries and were treated at the scene by St John paramedics. “It was a very chaotic scene,” says Blair. “The message from this is to be alert and be aware of what is happening around you, sometimes you can prevent a tragedy.” Another three-car crash occurred on the

Appleby Highway on Sunday in which a woman needed to be cut from the wreckage. She was taken to hospital in a serious condition. Separately, an elderly woman died hours after she was also hit by a car in Nelson on Sunday. Emergency services were called to the scene, in Bishopdale, shortly before 3pm. The woman sustained serious injuries, but her condition later deteriorated and she died several hours later. Police say its serious crash unit will be investigating the incident.

New museum man looks to future Charles Anderson Editor

Nils Pokel can see it now – a museum that is a destination for Nelsonians, complete with a children’s outdoor learning playground, immersive digital exhibitions, and exciting collaborations which promote the region’s culture and heritage. “It’s very exciting for me,” says the former digital experience manager at Auckland’s War Memorial Museum. But now Nils is the experience manager at Nelson Provincial Museum. He is only three weeks into the new role but is already brimming with ideas. His job is to look at the experience of all visitors who come to the museum – from when they learn about it to when they walk through the doors, to when they tell their friends about it. “We really want to make this place shine, which is more than just being the kaitiaki (guardian) of old, dusty things. "While that’s a central function of what we do, I’m really interested in making the museum more relevant and contemporary. "We want a destination that in-

stils a sense of pride and wow in this place.” Originally from Germany, Nils has worked in the digital sector for 15 years as a producer and creative director and was also central in helping Auckland Museum embrace the digital revolution – spearheading virtual reality and augmented reality exhibitions as well as utilising artificial intelligence and image recognition. “There are some really clever things which we can do with the assets we have, at a relatively low cost. "It’s all about helping us appreciate and unlock things.” As part of a bigger plan, he wants to make the museum a more visual landmark in the CBD. For example, he says the outdoor space on the first floor of the museum could be utilised for a much more ambitious vision. “I love the idea of an outdoor learning space where children can have fun and learn but also reflects the community.” It could be designed alongside children and have slides that emerge from the museum’s outdoor walls to entice people into the space. “But that is long term idea,” he admits. In the shorter term, there is a plan

The collection has recently been digitised and gained a spot on the Unesco register – a huge honour for the museum. Nils says already Nelson’s lifestyle

has delivered dividends for him and his young family. “It means I don’t spend two days a week in traffic. Now I can be at work in four minutes and at the beach in seven. "The people have all been wonderful too. It's been really great for my wellbeing."

Nils says there is an open invite to anyone in Nelson who is creative and innovative to come and talk to him about potential collaborations. “I'm sure those people are out there. "New Zealand is great that we can experiment and make things hap-

After what organiser Chai Deva described as "a devastating experience" last year, the Evolve Festival returned to Nelson, but this time, so did the sunshine. Last year’s festival was marred by howling 220kmh winds, rain, and having to completely evacuate Founders Heritage Park at a moment's notice. However, this was a stark contrast to the sunshine, smiles and relaxing vibes at the Evolve Festival this weekend. The annual event took over Founders Heritage Park for a weekend-long celebration, combining old customs

and new methods aiming to transform the health and well-being of individuals, the community and the earth. With 80 stalls, 70 workshops, and 20 hours of music, Chai says the three-day festival provided a smorgasbord of "inspiration, information, and celebration” for everyone. Paru Clarke has been attending since the festival’s inception and ran a few workshops of her own at this year’s festival. She says its one of her favourite events. “It gets better and better every year, the music, the organisation, and the workshops all are amazing. “[The organisers] Chai and Bex really put their heart and soul into it and I believe that its one of the best festivals,

beside Womad, and I’ve been to a lot of festivals around the world.” Local Anna Gully says that she, her daughter, and their friend just keep coming back to the festival. “I love it, we’ve been four times now and we’ve got our favourite people that we always come and see, it's really great.” There just for the day, Anna says the trio were soaking up as much of the festival as possible. “The highlights have been having our palms read they’re amazingly accurate which is surprising - getting in touch with your spiritual side, and doing something out of the ordinary that you wouldn’t normally do as a rule.”

After being “absolutely devastated” when last year’s festival was washed out, Anna says her daughter and their friend came down from Wellington especially so they didn’t miss out. Following last year’s devastation, Chai said this year's event was a complete contrast. “It was the most successful festival we have ever had, it was really well attended especially on the Saturday night,” he says. “Last year was pretty traumatic but the support from the community afterwards was absolutely amazing. “People really cared about Evolve Festival and they got in behind us and made sure that we were able to carry on.”

Market day on its way Brittany Spencer Trafalgar Street will be swarming with stalls and people instead of cars and motorists next Saturday for the annual Trafalgar Street Market Day. Organiser Simon Duffy says it's one of the biggest days in Nelson. “We’re closing down the centre of town, which is quite fun, and we’ve got some great entertainment and a lot of new stalls as well as all the favourites.” With roving musicians, street performances, face painting, and over 85 stalls containing everything from clothes and food to arts and crafts, Simon says its a real community day. “We’re really excited about it, it's a Uniquely Nelson initiative from years gone by and it's a neat day for everyone.” Trafalgar St will be closed from Hardy St to Bridge St from 9am to 3pm on Saturday, February 3.

Cancer survivors rally for relay Kate Russell A group of women who have been through the ups and downs of cancer are now banding together to help support others with the disease. On March 17, the Nelson breast cancer support group will take to Trafalgar Park for Relay For Life – the Cancer Society’s biennial fundraiser. Group member and breast cancer survivor Ngaire Pannel says the group meets every six weeks at the Cancer Society rooms on Hardy St. “It’s very sociable and supportive. Around 10 to 20 women come along and for the new ones it’s really good having someone to talk to who has been through it. They come at all stages of treatment.” Ngaire is no stranger to the event, having participated before and says it's a way for her to “give back”. “I don’t think that until you go through it yourself, you don’t realise how much is done for you. “I’m six or seven years down the track and I still get support, so it’s like a security blanket – because if the cancer comes back, you need that ongoing support. This year marks Nelson’s eighth relay and Cancer Soci-

Photo: Kate Russell. ety Nelson manager Michelle Hunt says the event is a time to celebrate and commemorate those who have lived with cancer. “For us, it’s twice as big as Daffodil Day and generates one third of our funding,” she says. It’s also the first year it will be held at Trafalgar Park instead of the usual Saxton Field location. “It will be easier, with more facilities - everything is there, and it’s more accessible and family-friendly,” says Michelle. “We are also hoping that by having it in the city, we’ll get

more people coming down to check it out. The public can come down for lunch or dinner and there will be lots of live entertainment.” In 2016 the event raised $260,000 with 107 teams and over 1,000 people participating - their biggest effort yet. This year’s event runs from 10am – 10pm, beginning with a survivors' lap. The public can also show their support by leaving messages during the candlelight ceremony at 9pm, and candle bags will be for sale beforehand or on the day. “Reading all the messages

that people leave makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up,” says Ngaire. “The camaraderie of the event is great - there’s hardly a family out there that hasn’t been affected by cancer.” Relay for Life is for all ages and fitness levels, registration is $20 and corporate teams are welcome to enter. A wheely good bike challenge

Kate Russell Nelson workplaces are being encouraged to swap their cars for bikes in February, as the Aotearoa Bike Challenge gears up for a month of wheely good times. The challenge follows a successful first year in 2017, which saw nearly two million kilometres cycled by more than 14,000 people from more than 1000 organisations, including almost 4000 new riders. One 10-minute journey by bike is all it takes to participate. It is free to register and there are some great prizes to be won including e-bikes and cycling gear. The challenge is suited to both individuals and workplaces and the number of rides clocked up by a team contributes towards the efforts of the organisation as a whole. Those who sign up will compete against each other to see who can get the most staff to ride a bike during the challenge - and it’s not about who can ride the most kilometres, but who can encourage the most people to give cycling a try. One local organisation, Sport Tasman, is aiming to get 100 per cent of their staff on a bike, with their Community Cycle Coordinator Gina Persico leading the charge. She says they will be setting up ‘park and rides’ for staff as well as organising lunchtime bike rides and encouraging other sports trusts and local organisations to get on board. “We want to encourage people to commute by bike – it’s not as hard as it seems and it can be a great way to unwind at the end of the day and get some fresh air,” she says. “There are so many great cycle ways in Nelson, too.” Sport Tasman and Nelson City Council will also be hosting a free ‘Go By Bike Day’ big breakfast on 14 February at 1903 Square between 7.30am – 9.30am. As of Monday, 1,212 organisations and 7,977 people across the country had signed up for this year’s challenge and registrations will remain open until February 28. Nelson needs to look at all the European cities that have encouraged parking out of town and public transport from large carparks - a railway line from Richmond to Atawhai would be the most obvious solution. Nelson Matters I thank the Weekly for this new ‘Nelson Matters’ column. It’s an opportunity to champion Nelson’s cause. It will keep Nelson readers informed of what’s happening in Parliament affecting our community and future. I’m optimistic about Nelson’s prospects in 2018. Our unemployment is down to just 2.2 per cent. Our region has been ranked the top performing economy in New Zealand. Local exporting, tourism, building and retail activity is at record levels. The Government books are in such good shape that family

incomes get a boost on 1 April. The mix has been modified by the new Government from what National proposed in last year’s budget, but payments like Family Support and the Accommodation Supplement are still going up. It will directly help 20,000 households by up to $200 a week and put an extra $25 million into our local economy. Nelson is hosting, for the first time ever, all three of our leading national sports teams, the Black Caps, Silver Ferns and All Blacks. Our own teams like the Mako, Tasman United and Gi-

ants are looking hot. We have six important regional projects coming to fruition this year. The Saxton Velodrome is opening in February, the Greenmeadows Centre in Stoke in March, the School of Music in April, the new Nelson Airport terminal in August and the new Nelson Hospice in October. Environmental gains expected this year include the reintroduction of takahe into the Kahurangi National Park and kaka and kiwi into the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary following hard-won pest control programmes. These iconic birds have been absent

from these areas for yonks and we should celebrate their return. These positive developments for Nelson have each involved years of work, much of it voluntary, and we must thank the councils and community leaders that are helping Nelson get ahead. This optimism does not overlook some real issues facing our community. Growing traffic congestion and an increase in our road toll have to be addressed. Nelson and Tasman households and businesses contribute $100 million each year in petrol taxes and road user charges and we cannot let Gov-

ernment siphon these funds off for other transport projects in other regions. There is a housing shortage and we need to ensure new construction continues to grow. We need to address local problems of water supply and quality. We need to get underway planning work on a new Nelson Hospital that is seismically safer and strengthen our mental health services. Owners Nigel Jerard and his partner Jackie (originally from Christchurch), first tried to fulfill their vision for a retro establishment in the garden city, but after looking at a few sites, found reasons not to proceed. Then, because they had always wanted to spend quality time in Nelson, the timing felt right to pursue their dreams here. The concept for The Workshop Café, Bar and Brewery is one they have been working on for many years – the name ‘workshop’ (which was born out of a brainstorming session with friends and family) is industrial, and their chosen space in Nelson really reflects this. They have taken the blank canvas of a warehouse-like building, with its high ceilings, concrete floors and airy openness to create something really special. Additionally, the couple have gone for 1950’s style furniture and props, and have made use of an old container adorned with a funky mural to create a nostalgic look and feel. The day after he turned 20, Hayden Squance became New Zealand's national triathlon champion over the Olympic distance on a testing course at Corsair Bay near Christchurch on Sunday. At the same time, 20-year-old Luke Kelly tore apart a field of 564 of the country's best long distance swimmers to win the 3.3km Interislander Capital Classic, race three of the Banana Boat Ocean Swim Series in Wellington. The pair have been competitors since their early teens, when both competed in both sea swimming and triathlon, with Kelly having the upper hand early on. Over recent years it's been Squance who has shone, becoming one of the top local competitors in sea swimming, running and cycling. This year Kelly has come back to swimming with a vengeance, leading the Port Nelson swim series after a series of thrilling sprint finishes with Squance, taking most by just a second or two. Earlier this month Nelson Weekly reported that Tasman had let go four players â€“ Robbie Pearson, Kieran Smith, Tinashe Marowa and Alex Ridsdale. Now midfielder Cory Chettleburgh and defender Brian Kaltack have also been allowed to leave the club to pursue O-League contracts in Fiji. Stoke/Nayland win a thriller over WTTU Andrew Board

There were dramatic scenes at the Marsden Rec in Stoke on Saturday as a depleted Waimea Toi Toi United fell just four runs short of what would have been a huge upset victory over Stoke/Nayland. Stoke/Nayland already has one title tucked away this season and were unbeaten in the Car Company Nelson Cricket 50 Over Championship heading into today's game. WTTU on the other hand had several of its best players unavailable, leaving Stoke/Nayland as the clear favourites. But an underwhelming batting effort by Stoke/Nayland saw them score just 149 off 36.1 overs when they were bowled out. Tasman United has been out-classed by Team Wellington at Saxton Field today, losing 4-1. Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway welcomed former All Black Chris Jack, the Tasman ambassador for Child Cancer, along with a group of families as special guests on Saturday night. The kids participated in the grand parade and watched the demolition derby, where a car was donated as a fundraiser along with several other auctions taking place over the week. There was plenty happening on the track as well, a huge field of side cars were on show, while Productions, Super Stocks and Stock cars ran best pairs and the Youth Ministocks ran their hotlycontested club champs, the T.Q’s had their final hit out before the NZ championship here in a fortnight's time. It wasn’t a good night for the 93 production of Tony Diedrichs, a cv joint blowing in the first heat while leading then the engine blowing up in flames in the 2nd

race. The best pairs on the night were Jarod Fisher and Kaylim McNabb. The Stock cars welcomed ex youth driver Hamish Carter to the grade but it was a horror start, with the car parked up before the green flag, but he managed 8th spot in the final heat to end the night successfully. The best pairs on the night was one way traffic, Keightley Teece and Curtis Bandy clearing out but a 17 point margin. The super stocks were having a final hit out before heading to Palmerston North for Teams champs next week, Stock car Brad Neiman was named as the 6th driver for the Tigers. He went out in Trevor Lineham’s car for some hot laps and was clearly enjoying the car, a big step up from the stock car. Dale McKenzie got some much needed practice after not having raced for a couple of seasons; he picked up two wins and won best pairs with Alex Hill.
