Forty years ago, Richard ‘Tosh’ McIntosh bought a caravan. The first place he and his wife Freda took it to was Tekapo. “But no one told us it was cold and miserable, and you needed a heater,” Tosh, a former physical education teacher at Waitaki Boys High, says. So the pair, who live in Oamaru, the decided to take it to Wanaka. “But all my old pupils were there,” Tosh says. “They make a lot of racket and drink a lot of beer and come and harass me.” So finally, they tried Nelson and came to Tahuna Holiday Park. “We set up over by that big tree over there, but it was a little tree back then.”

The weather was good and the living was easy. They brought their three daughters and enjoyed the holiday life. So they just kept on coming back. They changed caravans as the family got bigger as more children came along and then smaller as they moved away over seas - to London and Australia. But other things have changed in that time too, says Freda. “Society’s changed – we have working mothers and fathers now, so the mother comes with the kids and then has to go back to work and the father flies in. It’s a bit sad really, but that’s society now.” She says if camping has taught them anything it is just slow down and enjoy time with your family. “Especially the kids. Time goes so fast.”

“It gets pretty busy but really. It’s easy living. “You don’t have lawns to mow. It’s nice to get away from home,” says Tosh. In saying that, they don’t let the fact that they are sleeping in a caravan detract from the simple pleasures in life. There is a satellite dish that will go up and connect to the television. However, Tosh says its the grandchildren who come in and take over that amenity. They also have barriers to take the edge off the wind. “It’s starting to look a bit like a castle,” Tosh says. Freda says from their little base they can go anywhere in the region – Cable Bay, Kaiteriteri, Takaka. “But right now, we are happy right here – taking it slow.”

What made news in 2017 Locally Owned and Operated

2017 has been another busy year in Nelson. From a seven year mystery being solved, to a controversial road dividing our opinions - here are a few snippets of the stories making headlines in Nelson this year. LEO LIPP-NEIGHBOURS FOUND: After seven years, the case of a missing Nelson teenager was finally solved. On Monday 3 April, Leo LippNeighbour’s distinctive orange-yellow 1987 Toyota Corolla station wagon was found on the sea floor off Wakefield Quay. It was confirmed the body inside was Leo’s just over a week later, bringing some much needed closure for Leo’s parents, Charlotte Lipp and Colin Neighbours. HOUSING IN THE SPOTLIGHT: In August, we launched a six week focus on the region’s housing issues. We told the story of a young solo mother struggling to find a rental property, an elderly

Then in November, he and Mayor Rachel Reese, on behalf of Nelson City Council, gave a public apology.

Kate Russell The streets of Nelson will be alive with the sounds of Jazz this summer. The Nelson Jazzfest is an annual four-day festival, running from 3-6 January 2018 across a wide range of local venues. The “highlight” of the festival, according to Jazzfest director Paul Gilmour, will be the Founders Park twilight concert on Friday 5 January with plenty of great music and food carts on offer. It will feature an impressive line-up of artists, including Wellington City Shake-’EmOn-Downers, Nelson Jazz Club Big Band, Craig Walters Quartet, T-Bone Kate and the Sizzlers, as well as popular local act, the Steve Mitchell Band. Talking to Nelson Weekly, Steve Mitchell says the trio are “absolutely thrilled” to be part of the festival. “If you look at the whole timetable the organisers have put together, there are some

crowd at Founders Heritage Park for the twilight concert and Steve says it should be a fun evening. “We’ll do our best set and hopefully entice one or two performers on stage with us to conjure up something special that catches the groove. We want to make sure it is fun - and that’s the spirit of

Health group urges Emergency services expecting busy summer parents to delay teens’ drinking Brittany Spencer & Charles Anderson

Judene Edgar Parents are being urged by health promotion agencies to delay their teens’ drinking, and to help them to keep safe and make good decisions. The Public Health Service and Health Action Trust, with input from local parents and support from the Health Promotion Agency, have worked together to develop some tools to help. ‘The Plan’ aims to enable parents to have conversations with their teens to delay drinking and create a family plan together to deal with alcohol. “The project came out after discussions between various health promoters,” says Health Action Trust’s health promoter Rosey Duncan. “Because of the impact on brain development and learning ability, and the risks around sexual health, injury and assault, delaying drinking was identified as a key focal area.” As part of developing The Plan, Rosey says “parents have said that with alcohol available everywhere, it can be a minefield to negotiate with their teens”. An influx of visitors to the region this summer is expected to keep emergency services on their toes but they are urging people to stay safe while enjoying their time in Nelson. Nelson chefs share recipes Standing by the barbecue with tongs in one hand, and a cold drink in the other as friends and family gather round is quintessential to a kiwi summer. Mouths salivate at the very thought of sizzling fresh local produce so Brittany Spencer spoke with three of the region’s top chefs to give you a bit of know-how to spice up your barbecuing season. BBQ Lamb Cutlets & Fresh Herb Salsa Verde by JellyFish Restaurant and Bar head chef Jason Innes. Some of Nelson's best produce is used in this easy tasty summer recipe for barbecued lamb cutlets with salsa verde, grilled asparagus and cress. Salsa Verde: 1 bunch Italian parsley 1 bunch mint leaves 2 garlic cloves 2 tbsp capers 2 tbsp cornichon pickles 6 anchovy fillets 1 tsp Dijon mustard 1 tsp red wine vinegar

125ml extra virgin olive oil Roughly chop the parsley and mint, and place in a large mixing bowl. Crush the garlic and chop together with the capers, cornichons and anchovy fillets. Mix together with the chopped herbs, then add extra virgin olive oil and mustard. Mix thoroughly adding the red wine vinegar last (this helps maintain the vibrant fresh green colour). Season with salt and pepper to taste. Lamb: 2 lamb racks 1 bunch fresh asparagus 1 lemon 1 bunch watercress pure olive oil or good quality vegetable oil sea salt and cracked black pepper Heat the BBQ to high. Brush the lamb racks and asparagus with oil and season with salt and pepper. Cook the racks until are medium (approximately 10 minutes, times will vary depending on BBQ). Remove from heat and rest. While the meat is resting, char grill the asparagus spears. Cut racks along the bone into cutlets and

place onto a large serving plate, along with the grilled asparagus. Scatter over the watercress leaves and squeeze over the juice of the lemon. Drizzle with extra virgin olive oil and serve with the salsa verde. 2 limes 2 lemons 1 roll of aluminium foil Tear four squares of aluminium foil, just pull the roll out until the length matches the width. Lay the sliced leek in the centre of the foil squares then top with 1 salmon steak for each parcel, then place two prawn cutlets on top of that. In a mixing bowl, zest and juice the lime and combine with the golden syrup, garlic, ginger, soy sauce, sesame seed, and the optional red chilli. Fold the edges of the aluminium foil up into a bowl shape and drizzle 3-4 tbsp over the contents, there should be a fair amount of moisture in

the parcel to steam the seafood. Finally crinkle the tops of the foil together to seal the top, don’t pack too tightly as they need space for steam to expand into. The parcels are now ready to be placed on a preheated BBQ plate for approximately 15 minutes, just place them on the top rack of the BBQ to keep them warm. When removing the parcels from the BBQ, be sure to use a spatula underneath to make sure the bottoms don’t tear. To garnish, chop the lemons in half and place flesh side down on the hottest part of the grill to caramelize the sugars and give the lemon a nice colour, and top the parcel with fresh herbs of your choosing and flaky sea salt. Pour into a 1.5-2 cm high nonstick baking tray or line tray with baking paper. Smooth out the batter and refrigerate for a few hours to set before cutting to desired squares. Fry on the hot plate with a little oil until golden brown and crunchy, flip to crisp up the other side.

Nelson paying off mortgages faster Westpac customers in the Nelson region are paying off their mortgages faster than anywhere else in the country. Westpac NZ’s chief product officer, Shane Howell, said home loan customers had been making the most of the low-interest rate environment to repay their loans faster. “We’ve seen some of the lowest interest rates over a sustained period in New Zealand for some time. "It’s good to see customers are using this opportunity to pay down debt more quickly.” In the main centres, Wellington has the highest proportion of customers ahead on their repayments at 69.8 percent. Hower, Tasman is at 71.1 percent

and Nelson is at 70.2 percent. The regions with the lowest proportions of customers ahead on their repayments include Southland at 56.6 percent the West Coast at 55.7 percent. The median customer was eight months ahead and over $8,000 ahead in their repayments. Shane said many people had come off higher loan rates during a high rates cycle a few years back. “They’ve kept making the same level of repayment even though the cost of the loan – the loan rate – has fallen. "This has allowed them to make real progress on paying down their loan faster and saved them thousands of dollars in the process."

All Kiwi music festival for Nelson Kate Russell Local man Stu Allan has always dreamed of bringing a large-scale outdoor music festival to Nelson, and this summer he is finally making it happen. ‘Out of the Blue’ is a one-day event at Trafalgar Park on 6 January 2018 featuring an impressive line-up of some of New Zealand’s very best musical talent. There will be performances from The Eastern, stellar*, Hobnail, Kemptones, The Warratahs, Andrew Fagan and the People, L.A.B,

Sizing up the Sounds Every year Charles Anderson takes his daughter on a road trip around the region. This time he tries camping with her in the Sounds.

verberated around the car seemed to dull that magic just a touch. Ice cream. I promised her ice cream and playgrounds. “Playbwound?” she said with a rising inflection through her tears. “Ice cweem?” “Only if we stop crying,” I replied. She nodded, rubbing saline and snot from her eyes and nose. Yes, I would negotiate with terrorists. We rolled into Momorangi Bay campground in the early afternoon. We found our tent site on the water’s edge and said polite hellos to the families that were to be our new neighbours. I hauled the tent out of the boot and unfurled it. And in the space of about 20 minutes we had our sleeping quarters. Ivie giggled and ran inside and threw herself onto our sleeping bag. This was going to work, I told myself. I was winning. We swam in the water and splashed through the shallows. “Like Peter Pan,” Ivie said of the scene. Looking around I thought ‘yes, it was a bit like Neverland’. But reflecting on last year’s trip, I knew that this little Peter Pan was getting bigger. She was running and talking and getting sassier. Time was speeding up. She was getting tired but stubborn. So I bundled Ivie into the car for a “little dwive” and we rolled towards Picton. Again, she fell asleep. I kept driving and soon, quite unplanned, we were there and Ivie woke up to see the town’s giant destination playground out of the corner of her eye. “Playbwound! Pirate ship!”

We were somewhere on the Queen Charlotte Drive, winding around myriad corners in the blazing sunlight when she started complaining that it was too hot. She squirmed and groaned and winced. So, I put on the air conditioning. Then it was too cold. So, I wound down the windows. Then it was too windy. So, then Ivie, now two-years-old, started to wail. This was the start of a holiday. Every year since she was born I have endeavoured to take my daughter on a trip around the top of the South Island. So far, we had been to Karamea and Farewell Spit. I saw it as an excuse to show her more of the awesome area in which we were fortunate to live. But also, I wanted to see it for myself – it’s easy to get complacent when these places are on your doorstep. So that way we would both be seeing things for the first time. I had not spent a night in the Sounds since I was close to her age. Ivie was nearing three-years-old now and I believed that it could be time to try camping in a real tent. For days ahead of our departure I extolled the virtues of sleeping in a “special tent”. This was where “big girls” liked to reside, I told her. It was exclusive. It was a big deal. But as we rounded the curves of the Sounds, surrounded by an aquamarine ocean, thick forest islands and a glinting sun that managed to cast the sails which peppered the water in an almost magical light, the screams that re-

There was indeed a pirate ship and a water park. I was unprepared. No spare nappies, no swimming costume. But this was Ivie’s weekend. So I stripped off her nappy, put her pants back on and implored her not to soil herself. Then she was off, careering through water features – crazed and half naked. She was excited. So it was unsurprising then that the inevitable happened. She soiled herself. We headed back to the campground, singing Hakuna Matata and leaving her pants back in Picton. We ate fish and chips as the sun went down. Ivie was mucky with

tomato sauce as I got her changed into her pyjamas. “I don’t wanna go to sleep yet,” she said. So we read books. We read her brother’s Star Wars character encyclopaedia, which she insisted we pack. She learned about “Loda” and “Ham Soda” and the extensive George Lucas universe. The sun went down, and we put on the lamp. I told her stories and sang ‘Sitting on the Dock of the Bay’ to her for 850th time. These were my go-to techniques for encouraging unconsciousness. My techniques were not working. She wriggled and writhed and crawled around the

tent in the semi-dark. Then she turned to me. “Daddy, I want to go home now.” It was late. It was dark. We were in close proximity to several young families. I could have tried to convince her. I could have put my foot down. Instead, I sighed, put her inside the car while I took down the tent in the dark. As we drove home I called Ivie’s mother and told her what was going on. I put her on speakerphone. “Ivie,” she said. ‘What happened?” “We go home now,” Ivie replied. “It wasn’t a very good idea.” “Maybe another time?” I asked her. “Yeah, another time.” Then she fell asleep.

Hollie snapped up for Marchfest Marchfest organisers are touting “the strongest music lineup for years” as Hollie Smith, headlines the event with her band. Marchfest snapped up the Kiwi singer known as ‘the reigning queen of Aotearoa soul’ when the winery tour was recently cancelled. Organiser Mic Dover says they originally approached Hollie a few months ago but she was already booked. “So we pencilled her in for 2019 just in case - but now local Hollie fans can see her this summer after all.” Smith will be supported by world/electronica band Weird Together, Kiwi indie-folk legend Mel Parsons, Wellington alt/country band The Miltones, electroacoustic folk-funk act Sonic Delusion, touring Canadian blues/roots resonator guitarist Joel Fafard and local hi-energy rockers, The Immi-

Skatepark Tour rolls into action The region’s top talent on skateboards, scooters and BMX bikes are gearing up for the thrills and spills of the 2018 Skatepark Tour. After winning the junior scooter competition for the past two years, eleven-year-old Nikita Turu is looking forward to racing again this year. Nikita has been riding bikes, scooters and skateboards since she was three years old. “I play around with the BMX and skateboard, but I mainly ride the scooter,” she says. Nikita isn’t fazed that she’s usually the only female competing in the tour, but says it would be good if other girls gave it a go. She says that scootering is good for making new friends and she loves the challenge of learning new tricks. “I go to all the heats I can. Last year I made it to all of them,” she says. The tour now comprises eight heats after successfully expanding to Murchison and Nelson in 2017. “It went really well in Murchison, so we’re keen to go back again for more action,” says Sport Tasman’s tour coordinator Seth Watson. The skate, scooter and BMX com-

petitions are split into junior (5 to 11 years), senior (12 to 17 years) and open grade (18 years and over). The winners from each of the seven heats will be available on the Tasman Youth Council Facebook page and the overall winners are decided based on points from placings at each heat. This year the riders are competing for over $6000 worth of prizes and Seth says that in addition to the main prizes at each heat, there will also be a number of spot prizes. Entries are taken on the day. Helmets are compulsory for all competitors. The 2018 Skatepark Tour kicks off at the Murchison Skatepark on Saturday, January 6 starting at 1pm. Next stop is the Mapua Skatepark on January 7 from 3pm, Tapawera Skatepark January 10 from 5pm, Motueka Skatepark January 13 from 3pm, Takaka Skatepark January 14 from 3pm, Brightwater Skatepark January 17 from 5pm and Richmond Skatepark January 20 from 3pm. The final three-hour session is at Nelson’s Neale Park Skatepark January 21 from 3pm.

Donation keeps heli crew located Charles Anderson The Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter Trust is walking the talk when it comes to personal locater beacons (PLBs). The team that runs the region’s rescue helicopter was recently donated $3000 from the Rotary Club of Richmond’s proceeds from the Nelson Wine and Food Festival.
