Surf’s up at Tahuna Kate Russell Nelson’s surf lifesavers battled windy conditions at Tahuna Beach on Sunday in what was their first competition of the season. Around 60 competitors took part in Nelson Surf Life Saving Club Carnival, which featured IRB racing and both junior and senior competitions in beach events, beach flags, sprints, swimming and board races. There was also a ‘run to the bay’ long haul race. “It was a fantastic event and good competition with clubs from out of town including Rarangi, Sumner and Kotuku,” says the clubs’s sports officer, Aaron Lyttle. “It was also good build-up for the juniors looking to go away to champs this year.” Aaron says events like these are also a good way to showcase to the public that surf lifesaving is not all about the rescues. “This is the competition side of things - it’s not just patrolling and watching between the flags.” Aaron says they have a strong membership this year but are always looking to keep building.
