Asking prices for homes at all-time high Charles Anderson House prices in Nelson region are “cooked” with second home local buyers being priced out of the market by cashed up out of town retirees, according to a local agent. The assesment comes as it is revealed that Nelson is bucking the national property trend by having a record all-time average asking price combined with an increase of listings. According to realestate.co.nz, the average asking price in Nelson is now $686,963, up 7.6 per cent compared to January 2018. There are seven other regions that have had all-time high asking prices, but all of those also had a fall in listings during that same period. However, realestate.co.nz says that Nelson is the exception with a jump of 13.3 per cent of new listings, when compared to January 2018. Tall Poppy’s Simon Collins says the situation is difficult, particularly for people selling their first home to buy another. “I think we are quite cooked with the prices. We have still got people from other parts of New Zealand and they can afford the prices, but second home buyers competing for the same properties are having trouble.” He says when people start repayments for a mortgage on a $680,000 house it can be “quite debilitating”. “Our incomes haven’t kept up with the price of housing. That gap is just getting harder.” Kate Bradley of REMAX says there are far more buyers than sellers and sellers are reluctant to

says. Schools all over the city will be back in action on Thursday, with many principals reporting strong term-one rolls. Birchwood School in Stoke will have the high-

est first day roll in years, according to principal Chris Herrick. “We have a number of new students starting at Birchwood this year. We have nine new entrants, along with 11 other stu-

dents starting throughout the school.” Stoke School is also starting back with a bang, with 15 new entrants and a roll of about 258. Clifton Terrace School principal Rob Wemyss says they also have a large number of new entrants coming in.

“The roll is looking really strong for 2019, the year looks to be really exciting.” Meanwhile, Kayden says he’s looking forward to his new adventure. “I’m going to go swimming, learn how to read and play with my friends Harry and Charlie.”

have low overall stock levels, which has helped vendors command handsome prices for their properties.” Despite this fall in houses for sale across the country, Vanessa says that property seekers were still heavily interested in the market, with realestate.co.nz registering 1,126,076 unique users who were browsing for property in January. “The Kiwi passion for property is alive and kicking,” says Vanessa.

Fire guts home in Stoke Jonty Dine A Stoke home has been gutted after a fire ripped through the residence on Sunday morning. A neighbour who witnessed the blaze on Towai St said they first saw flames around 9am. “I saw the corner of the house on fire, went to get my wife and by the time we got back the whole thing was engulfed.” They say six fire appliances battled the inferno for well over an hour. “I could hear all the windows popping and the roof caving in.” It was a dramatic scene, with

smoke billowing all over the neighbourhood. Neighbours and passersby gathered around the house to watch the fire crews as they tried to contain the blaze. It is understood that a teenager was in the house when the fire started but managed to escape unharmed. There were vast amounts of damage to rooms located on the second-storey and the bottom floor also suffered significant smoke and water damage. No one needed to be attended to for any injuries, however, it is understood two pet reptiles

died in the flames. The neighbour says thick smoke was billowing from the two-storey house. “It went up very quickly, it was quite scary to watch.” Another witness says a “very brave” member of the public ran towards the burning house to ensure the family had escaped. “The family were home but luckily they all got outside.” The evidence of the fire is visible from the street with vast charring on the outside of the house where flames leapt out of the windows. Emergency services are still investigating the cause of the fire.

‘Fantastically fun’ festival Jonty Dine The top of Trafalgar became a cavalcade of quirky as some of the best buskers in the business took to the streets. Performers from across the globe were in town for the annual Nelson Buskers Festival over the weekend. Producer Giles Burton says the “fantastically fun” festival proved popular with thousands stopping by to get a glimpse. Giles says the festival is all about entertainment and exciting people. “With acts performing just once a day, it had a nice and

relaxed feel to it.” He says he is pleased with a very interesting mix of acts that they have lured to the region, including the “must-see” Sara Twister. The German contortionist made audiences laugh, gasp and cringe as she demonstrated her supernatural flexibility. After performing some jawdropping body contortions, Sara squeezed her entire body through a stringless tennis racquet before dislocating her hip to escape. Giles says the festival featured some very bizarre interactions with the audience. After showing his more deli-

cate skills such as catching a jellybean with chopsticks, Hero San wowed the crowd with his strength. The real-life superman showcased the results of 20 years of training as he held own body weight with just one hand. He then took things up a level by holding a bridge with a man twice his weight on his back. Nelson’s Finn Baker got the chance to join Hero San on stage. The five-year-old was given ten dollars for his efforts. Finn says it was lots of fun and he was looking forward to spending his prize.

New life breathed into Tahuna centre Charles Anderson In the space of a month the staff at Tahunanui Community Centre have been on a roller coaster of emotions. On December 21 last year, the teachers of the pre-school, which is owned by the centre, said goodbye to the families that attended the early childhood centre and were looking forward to a break before starting back again in the new year. However, that afternoon teacher Brigitte Older received a call saying that the community centre was in severe financial stress and would have to be closed, along with the preschool. At the start of the 2017/18 financial year the centre had cash of $141,292 but that had dwindled to $43,590 by the end of it. It was revealed that the centre was burning through $8000 a month for the first six months of the new financial year until it ran out of money. “We had no idea that anything was happening,” says Brigitte. “I really was in disbelief.” She went straight round to her co-worker’s house and spent the evening figuring out how to contact all the parents to help them find new centres. “It was a crazy time. The biggest

thing wasn’t that we had lost our jobs, it was the families that we had lost. The idea that we had lost all our children and they wouldn’t have anywhere to go.” Brigitte says all the other centres in the area for under-twos were full, so there was nowhere else to go. She sat down with her fellow teacher Denise Forbes and they decided to organise a meeting with Rachel Boyack and Murray Leaning. “Next minute there were 12 of us and they had brought all these financial records. It was amazing to see.” She contacted the Nelson Tasman Kindergarten Association’s chief executive Craig Vercoe and he immediately came down to the meeting. “He said that he would do everything to help and he did.” A plan was put in place. The nearby Tahunanui Kindergarten would take all the children from the early childhood centre. But then the association decided

Photo: Charles Anderson to lease the building, which was approved by the new board. All the older children stayed at Tahunanui Kindergarten with the younger ones moving back to the pre-school. It has been five weeks since that phone call and only three children have not returned. Within days they had eight new enrolments and the centre now has more children than they did before. Now they have 24 children. “We went from going through the grief process but then I got into that fighting spirit, I knew I wasn’t going to give up,” Brigitte

says. “We just feel so supported and blessed that people came together to help us.” New board for centre: Meanwhile, a new board has been elected to govern the Tahunanui Community Centre. The decision was made last week after the former board resigned in the wake of the financial mess which threatened to close the institution. New board chair Murray Leaning told the meeting that the new group of nine people had put in

“many hundreds of person hours and some of their own money ... on behalf of the Tahunanui Community”. It was initially thought that the centre would have to be liquidated to pay back the tens of thousands of dollars it owed. Murray said that the board voted not to do that as it sent the wrong message to the community and funders. However, it was clear that the pre-school building needed to be sold, hopefully to the Nelson City Council or the Nelson Kindergarten Association, and that money used to discharge debts. He also said there was a perception that the financial troubles arose because of a government grant not being renewed. “This is absolutely not the case.” Murray said there was a forensic accounting team undertaking a thorough investigation of the centre’s financial practises. “We cannot make public our concerns until the investigations have been completed.” In the meantime, the council has agreed to have their facilities contractor operate the building for three months, at council’s cost. The centre’s free drop-in health clinic with Emma Agnew also re-opened last week with support from the Nelson Bays PHO, until the end of June.

Ray Weston and his partner Verena Braddock made the call as the lease on the Tahunanui business is up in March. They had the business up for sale but did not receive any viable offers. Ray, who also owns Hotrock Pizza, opened the bar in an art deco building six years ago as a way to offer locally brewed craft beers to the community. “When we started there was nothing in Nelson that was showcasing the best of Nelson’s beer industry.” Six years on, he says now craft beer has become mainstream. “That’s great to see. It probably justifies what we were doing at the time.” However, now was the time to call last drinks. “I’ve done my course of time with it, it’s time for me to move on. I love it, I live upstairs, the people who come here are amazing.” So, on March 8, all the fit-out of

people comfortable and looking after them.” Ray had looked at the building for a number of years. He says it was a derelict building when he took it over. “I took a punt, did a fit-out and had six good years.” He says people’s social lives

have changed with drink driving laws being hardened. “I don’t know if it has saved any lives, possibly not. I’m really concerned that people don’t socialise as much as they did. Social media isn’t a substitute for face to face dialogue. I worry about the future.”

Assault witness sought: Nelson Police are looking to identify a witness following an assault in the city in September last year. The incident occurred on the evening of Wednesday September 19 between 8.30 and midnight on the corner of Hardy and Vanguard St. The victim was pulled into a grey car with two occupants in it and driven to Motueka where she was allegedly assaulted. The woman was dropped back off at the same location. It was here that she recalls seeing a woman walking past wearing a pink coat. Manhunt sparked: A police manhunt was sparked after a report of an armed robbery at the Haven Road store in Nelson late on Friday afternoon. Police received reports of a robbery at the store at around 4.50pm. The alleged offender fled the scene and has not yet been found by police. A police spokesperson says the offender had what was later established to be a toy gun. "Cordons were put in place and a dog unit was dispatched but lost the track at about 5.30pm. Police stood the cordons down at that point and are now investigating at the scene."

Nelsonians build homes in Cambodia

Staff reporter Locals from across Nelson recently had a tropical holiday of a different kind – building homes for impoverished people in Cambodia. The group, organised by Habitat for Humanity, returned home after spending time in a rural village about an hour out of Phnom Penh. “We split into three groups of 10 and worked with the locals to build three houses,” says Habitat for Humanity Nelson chair Rob Silcock. “Everybody was absolutely over the moon because they were able to work with the local people and the kids.” Rob says the group were diverse, with most never having experienced something like it before. “It was new experience for almost all of them. Everybody got on well and enjoyed it.” He says the teams built the homes “the hard way”, mixing concrete by hand and making do with pretty basic tools. “But in one week of determined activity we completed three houses, and enjoyed working with and alongside some vulnerable families.”

Riders schooled on safety Jonty Dine David Keilty believes all 52 fatal motorbike accidents on New Zealand roads last year were preventable. In a bid to curb the carnage, Nelson bikers were schooled on motorbike safety at the annual Shiny Side Up Festival held at Saxton Fields on Sunday. The Ride Forever programme manager says the number of biker fatalities is not acceptable and the festival was about looking at how to prevent them. “We bring together everyone with an interest in motorbikes from clubs, retailers, police and enthusiasts and show them what is great about riding but also get them thinking about safety.” He says it is crucial to keep the next generation of riders safe. “We have a problem with the older generation and the ‘she’ll be right’ attitude. So what we don’t want to do is encourage those new riders to adopt that attitude. The ACC-sponsored programme educates riders about protective equipment, technology and tech-

niques. “We have some of the top trainers in the country here.” Dave says since the inception of Ride Forever, there has been a 20 percent reduction in injuries. “We want riders to understand the risks and mitigate them.” The Nelson biker community turned out in droves for the fourth annual festival which featured seminars, stunts, workshops and of course a mass of motorbikes. “We have a really great population of riders here, there has been huge interest.” He says the festival continues to get bigger and better. “It’s been a fantastic event and hopefully we will be welcomed back next year.” Nathan Wastney brought his bikermad sons Liam, 5, and Harrison, 3, along to see some of the action. Liam says the best part of the day was seeing the motorcycles do skids in the demonstration area. Nathan says his boys have always been into bikes, while he has ridden all his life. Liam says he loves motorbikes because they get you places quickly.

Sonny Alesana is no stranger to preparing a hāngi feast. It’s a hot Monday afternoon at Whakatū Marae, and he is digging out the hāngi pit for the annual Kai Festival. The kitchen is humming with helpers, preparing the 40kg of spuds and 30kg of kumara that’s needed for the day. Sonny says he once fed 1800 people a hāngi from just one hole, so preparing an estimated 400 meals should be breeze for him this year. “It’s the easiest way to feed multitudes of people.” Although this year’s hāngi is a big fundraiser for local kapa haka groups, Sonny says he’s doing it to support Waitangi Day. “For me, it’s about making sure there is a hāngi for the visitors.” Out of the 400 meals on offer today, 250 of those have already

There will be a powhiri at Whakatū Marae at 11am and Whenua Iti is also running workshops which the public are able to enjoy, including haka, flax weaving and learning to speak te reo. Last year, more than 7000 people attended the increasinglypopular event which is now in its 11th year.

Jerusalem Quartet: I am writing to express my dismay over the call for a boycott of the Jerusalem Quartet at the Adam Chamber Music Festival in Nelson.The Jerusalem Quartet does not come as cultural ambassadors nor is the group funded by the Israeli Government. Nelson Matters Labour owes Nelson and New Zealand voters an apology over the failure of their flagship Kiwibuild policy. It has been a cynical political con on one of the most important issues facing New Zealand. The original Kiwibuild was for the Government to build 10,000 homes a year to be sold for $300,000 each for lower income first home buyers. Labour argued that the state could build houses far more quickly and less costly than any building company. The policy was scaled back just before the Election to 1000 homes in the first year, 5000 in the second, 10,000 in the third and 12,000 each for the next 7

years. This promise was repeated by Jacinda Ardern, Phil Twyford and local Labour candidates like Nelson’s Rachel Boyack endlessly and included in brochures to every Nelson household in 2017. The scale of Labour’s failure has been eye watering. Far from the 1000 Kiwibuild homes promised in the first year only 33 have been built. The private sector in the same year built 33,000. The average price of the Kiwibuild Homes has been $540,000 and not the $300,000 promised. The policy was changed to allow buyers to earn up to $180,000 a year and was also altered to let them pocket the profits from a short term resale. The homes be-

ing built were not additional but just relabelled from existing developments. Nelson and Tasman has been particularly short-changed. Labour promised our region would get our share of Kiwibuild homes (proportionate to our population). That equates to 20 in the first year, 100 in the second and 200 in the third. None have been built or are under construction. Labours response to this mess has been to blame the officials they appointed to run Kiwibuild. The CEO is gone but is now suing the Government causing more costs for taxpayers. If a business promised 1000 homes at $300,000 each and delivered

Businesses called on to support charity golf day Though some of the swings may not be pretty, the annual Fifeshire Foundation golf day acts as one of the biggest drives for the Nelson charity. Hundreds of businessmen will take to the greens next month to help support the foundation which supports our most vulnerable. Event coordinator Chris Butler says the tournament acts as the charity’s primary fundraiser for the year. “The trust is set up to help support those in need, so it is

a great cause to get behind.” Chris says the day has evolved to now include more than 30 teams of four. “It has become a big day.” He says the day doesn’t only provide an opportunity to raise up to $30,000 but is also a good chance to network with the business community who get right behind it. “The whole purpose is to get together fun day out and raise some significant money.” Chris says businesses don’t have to play to support the

Nayland College students Sophie Young and Greta Stjade took up beach volleyball as a hobby during the indoor offseason. The 17-year-olds say the sport was just “something to do in summer”, but now the pair can call themselves national champions. Sophie and Greta beat out 60 other teams at the National Senior Secondary School Beach Volleyball Championships in Mount Maunganui at the weekend, a first-ever title for a Tasman team. “When we stop to think about it, I guess it is quite a big deal,” says Sophie. Greta says, with the North Islanders having far more experience, they certainly didn’t expect to be crowned champions. “We were definitely surprised, it was quite a shock.” The teens made their way to the final after beating New Plymouth Girls 2-0 in the quarters and Otumoetai College 2-1 in the semis to set up a showdown with the heavilyfavoured Westlake Girls. With crowd support firmly in favour of the Aucklanders, Sophie and Greta went about spoiling the party. “There was a lot of pressure,

Photo: Supplied. we knew they were very good players, so we just wanted to give it our best.” After sneaking home in the first and dropping the second, Nayland stormed home to claim the final set and the title. “We were down by quite a lot but then we got back as many points through our serves as we could and managed to catch up.” The pair say it took a while for their achievement to sink in. “We didn’t really feel anything, we were so hyped up,” Greta says. The Nayland duo made a stunning statement on day one, knocking off the second seeds in Whakatane. The pair say their most polished perfor-

mance came in the semi-final. Greta and Sophie have only been playing together since just before Christmas with Greta having won a scholarship to the school and moving from Latvia. “We play indoor mostly and have only been a team for a couple of months, we had to squeeze in as many trainings as we could.” They say coach Armins Vensbergs was hugely influential. “He is a very good beach volleyball player and told us how to play smart ball in gaps,” Sophie says. The focus will now shift to indoor volleyball as the two prepare for nationals and a trip to Hawaii in June.

Now in its 5th year, the organisers of the upcoming Nelson Vintage Car Club Swap Meet and Bazaar say it’s an event which is growing and is continuously being fine-tuned. “These days it’s become more of a market-bazaar day because the show has expanded over the past five years,” says Nelson Vintage Car Club chairman, Jim Wareing. “When it was more of a ‘swap meet,’ people used to come along with old car, motorbike and truck parts which they swapped and traded between each other. Today, while the emphasis is still the same, there’s also a huge array of stalls including antique goods, bric-a-brac, old signs and records.” Taking place rain or shine, the organisers are expecting people from all over the South Island. Pole masters take centre stage Staff reporter

Some of the world’s best pole practitioners are heading to Nelson this weekend as part of New Zealand's first semi-pro pole art competition. Pole Artistry Nelson, in association with Glen James Jewellers and Lupit Poles is hosting the event at the Theatre Royal on Saturday. “With interest and attendances in Pole growing nationwide over the past decade, we recognised an increasing need to acknowledge those who are yet to establish themselves in the pole community,” says Pole Artistry founder and managing director Sarah Dodds. She says there are currently a number of competitions in circulation which celebrate the successes of those individuals who have helped Pole grow from the ground up. “Unfortunately, as this group continues to challenge each other and raise the bar, those who are

Pole Sports Federation, taking the country one step closer to regulating standards here in New Zealand and to competing on an international stage. “Not only will this event showcase our up-and-coming talents, it will also provide an opportunity to witness professional polers at their best.” This includes Russia's threetime world champion Evgeny Greshilov. “Come along and share in the excitement of this growing industry and see what all the fuss is about, you might just find yourself booking a class at your local studio.” A portion of all ticket sales will go to 'Brave NZ' which supports victims of sexual violence.

Griffins win Hawke Cup zone final Peter Jones

The Nelson Pine Griffins cricket team will challenge Southland for the Hawke Cup in a fortnight’s time. It was three days of good oldfashioned Cup cricket at Horton Park that resulted in a first innings victory over old rivals Marlborough. Nelson had cruised past Marlborough’s under-par first innings total of 212 by stumps on day two, well-placed at 331-6 with skipper Greg Hay unbeaten on 127. Marlborough’s only realistic hope of forcing an outright decision was to take quick wickets but it was 28 overs into the final day before they were able to make inroads. Felix Murray was the first to go, seeming well poised on 92 to push for a century before he played a Sam Boyce delivery onto his stumps. The two Bens, Hazlett and Stark, came and went quickly, but No 11 Jarrod McKay hung around with

Hay who was nearing another double century. However, his marathon 370-ball knock came to an end when he was adjudged caught behind by Ma’ara Ave from Matthew Stretch’s bowling with his score at 180. He registered 18 boundaries in a totally professional exhibition of efficient run-gathering. Late wickets to Stretch and Boyce helped Marlborough’s cause but it was a tired and frustrated team who trooped off for lunch after being in the field for 158 overs. After the break a maximum of 52 overs were available to be bowled for the day, leaving the home side, who trailed by 238, their own version of “mission impossible” if they were to recover the situation. The Red Machine battled hard to get a total which at half time seemed adequate but not unassailable. Stoke/ Nayland opted to bat first on a surprisingly sluggish deck. Darius Skeaping and Clayton Campbell dug in to produce a 112-run partnership. One of Nelson’s favourite sons has resigned with the region. The Mike Pero Nelson Giants have secured the signature of star forward Finn Delany for the 2019 season. Finn had an outstanding 2018, averaging just under 20 points a game and leading a Giants resurgence which saw it finish the regular season in third. The 23-year-old was also named in the NZNBL all-star five and forward of the season. The Tall Black will again be integral to the Giant’s chances of success in 2019. Giants general manager Jeremy Banks says the franchise is “really excited” to have Finn back on the books for 2019. “Finn had a fantastic season for us last year and he's taken that form and built on it with a strong season for the Breakers.” Finn has spent four seasons with the Breakers, racking up 59 appearances with the Auckland franchise. In October, he slammed home a career-best 27 points off the bench against Adelaide before a knee injury saw him endure a stint on the sidelines. However, he has returned to court and has continued the form that illustrates why his signature is so highly sought after. s w e N g n i h s Fi Deep Blue Snapper Cup Dominik Berghamer The water in the bay gets warmer every day and northwesterly winds are pushing clear, blue open seawater into the area. Ideal conditions for albacore tuna and, indeed, the first ones have been caught. Traditionally, the best places to find them are a few miles off Cape Soucis (Okiwi Bay) and off Separation Point. Head out to the 40 metre mark or deeper and look for crystal clear, dark blue water. Trolling is the way to go if you can’t spot any work-ups, classic lures are hex heads and rapalas. The more lures you’ve got running and the more racket they (and the boat) make the better, tuna love the sound of possible bait fish splashing on the surface. If you hook one make sure you use a gaff, or even better, a large landing net to get them on board. Many are lost while trying to lift them in on the leader.

Kill and bleed them (this tends to make a great mess) and put them on ice immediately, the meat is delicious but spoils quickly if not treated with care. The Dawnbreakers Fishing Club members are counting down to their highlight of the season, the annual Big Blue Snapper Cup, taking place on the 2nd of March. The committee members have been busy finding sponsors and collecting prizes. There are over $10,000 worth of prizes to be won so far and we are far from finished. Noah shines in the city of sails Jonty Dine Nelson sailors are continuing to blow expectations out of the water. Noah Malpot, 13, defied the odds at the weekend to finish second in the Optimist Fleet at the Auckland Championships against the highly-favoured big city sailors. In an incredibly competitive fleet, which included a number of sailors who travelled as part of the New Zealand team to the Optimist World Championships last year, and in challenging conditions that saw even the best sailors struggle, Noah secured silver in style. Noah says the win is the result of training every day for the past two years. "It definitely paid off." The young sailor says conditions were in his favour during the race. "We get a lot of tides here in Nelson and there was a big tide at Maraetai which suited me," he says. Noah says he was aiming for a top five finish but surprised

The next national ranking regatta will be the Interislander over the hill in Picton. The young sailing star will be hoping to improve on his sixth-placed finish at the North Island Champs in October, ahead of the Nationals at Murray’s Bay, Auckland in April as he looks to qualify for the NZI-

ODA Worlds team. Other Nelsonians to compete in Auckland included Ben Roff who came 32nd in the 78 boat Optimist Fleet. Georgia Schokking and Ben Mangin sailed Starlings, coming 24th and 28th respectively in the fleet of 49. The Starling Nationals are due to be held in Nelson during the Easter school holidays in 2020.

construction, the desire to be back on the pitch became too much. “I missed football and wanted to get back into it. When Ryan heard I had moved to Sydney and that I wasn’t playing, he offered me the opportunity to come to Nelson.” The 24-year-old had represented the semi-professional Limavady United as well as Northern Ireland schoolboys. His Limavady side enjoyed unprecedented success having won back-to-back trebles with two league championships and two cups in two years. He says while playing in the heat has been an adjustment, he is loving being back. “There was a bit of rust at my first training, but I’ll just look to get the fitness levels up as quick as possible.” Bryan joins fellow Northern Irishmen Corey Wilson and James McClay in the Suburbs’ squad to make up a strong defensive trio. “I want to keep as many clean sheets as possible.” While his primary goal is to contribute to another successful season, he will be sure not to forget the fact he is living his dream. “Not many people get the chance to move to the opposite side of the world to play football, so I just want to enjoy it.” Suburb’s season kicks off on March 9.

With the departure of two of its brightest young stars, Nelson Suburbs has wasted little time recruiting top talent to fill the boots of Matt Tod-Smith and Bertie Fish. The club has signed a pair of experienced European players to the books as they look to build on a successful 2018. Cameron Gordon brings a wealth of experience from England having signed on with the Swindon Academy at eight-years-old. The 23-year-old striker spent his childhood playing against glamour clubs Chelsea and Manchester United but says his dream has always been to travel the world playing the game he loves. Cameron came to New Zealand in September where he signed on for Southern United. However, due to the import quota, he spent the season on the sidelines. Hungry to continue his career in the country, Cameron called various clubs in New Zealand to begin his next chapter. When new Suburbs director of football Ryan Stewart offered him a spot on the books, Cameron jumped at the opportunity. “It wasn’t a hard sell.” Cameron says while the cutthroat environment of academy life helped him become a

disciplined player and person, he eventually chose the education path. “Swindon is not biggest club but to get to train on the biggest grounds against great players was amazing, but the atmosphere changed once we turned 16.” He says the atmosphere turned sour as players chased contracts, prompting him to leave the academy and go to college. After completing his A-levels, Cameron attended Loughborough University. Cameron says while his size is an asset, he has much more to offer. “I can help create, run into channels to stretch the defence and hopefully pop the ball in the net.” He graduated with a degree in sports science so has a safety net should football not work out. “Less than one per cent of players make it so I think I made the right decision.” Ryan’s recruitment drive has also lured Irishman Bryan McClelland, who had recently hung up his boots, out of retirement and to the region. The centre half had been playing men’s football as a teenager but gave up the game to work in Australia. “I went on a working holiday just to get away from home and enjoy the sunshine and city life.” After six months working in
