The man behind a multimilliondollar peanut butter empire is now wanting to set up an “inventor centre” to allow others to follow in his footsteps.

Pic Picot, who started Pic’s Peanut Butter in 2007 at the Nelson Market, cut the ribbon on the company’s new $10 million factory on Saxton Rd over the weekend. No sooner had that task been

completed and he was talking about his next mission. “I need a new challenge,” he says. That means a vision to set up a space, close to his factory, where aspir ing

food manufacturers can test their ideas out in a real commercial space. “I think we have such an opportunity to do something by sharing ideas.” He wants to build a basic ware-

house with help from the Government’s regional growth fund and fit it out as a factory space – complete with shared facilities, chillers and a smoko room.

Ollie Rooney still gets excited when he sees his face while getting his breakfast. The nine-year-old was chosen as one of five Kiwi kids to be the face of Weet-Bix as the iconic cereal promotes the 2019 Weet-Bix TRYathlon. Hopefuls were asked to submit a short essay about overcoming an obstacle. Ollie’s story about becoming a better reader was selected and the Hampden Street School student was flown to Auckland for a photo shoot. “It was pretty awesome.” Ollie’s story was posted to the back of the box as well as his image on the front making him somewhat of a celebrity at school. This weekend will be Ollie’s third Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon. He says the training has been tough but will no doubt be worth it. The popular event is being held at Tahunanui Recreation Ground on Sunday, 3 March 2019 from 9am.

where Pic’s could do new product development. He says it could help cement Nelson’s place in the country as an innovator in the food manufacturing space. His first experience with such a set up was in the 1980s when he was involved with a cooperative workshop in Auckland. “I learned so much from that experience and we learned so much from each other. I always dreamed of establishing something like that again.” He says the company has a lot of leftover machinery from past products. “We would love to make that

available. I’m sure there are other businesses around Nelson in the same position.” The factory is a joint venture with Coman Construction and Pic says the company would be willing to provide the land for the inventor centre project. Pic sees it as a place to help inspire people and have viewing areas where the public could see producers in action. “People look at our factory and ask ‘how on earth they might have enough money to build that’. But it’s a stage thing. We want people to say ‘I could do this’. It’s just a matter of doing it.”

The Government has committed to investing $1 billion a year over three years in the regional economic development fund. Council defends bridge water blast Kate Russell Reporter

Nelson City Council has defended its use of water for cleaning a central city bridge following a slew of negative comments on social media. The council has been accused of wasting the precious resource, amidst tight restrictions, for water blasting the Collingwood Street Bridge this week ahead of it being repainted. “Water restrictions and you choose to do this? … Surely doing this in a few months won’t make any difference!” commented a person on the council’s Facebook page.

“There are terrible drought conditions and water restrictions that are preventing people from watering their food and the council’s priority is painting a bridge?” commented another. However, council hit back at the comments, stating this “necessary” component of the project cannot be delayed or deferred. “This isn’t an easy decision. We had a number of things to consider, including the availability of contractors, road closures, scaffolding, further restricting public access across the bridge and the impact of the weather,” says a council spokesperson. “This job needs to be done now as warm weather is needed so

the paint can cure correctly. If this job is left longer, then the rusting damage to the bridge will increase.” The amount of water needed to carry out this work is estimated to be between 5000 and 7500 litres, which is around the same amount needed to fill a large spa pool. However, they explain that the impact on water supply will be “minimal” as most of the water used will be contained, filtered and collected in a container for irrigation use. The 64-year-old bridge was last painted five years ago. The road and footpath on the bridge is closed until 9 March with all work expected to be completed by 30 March.

Finish line in sight for Greenmeadows tenants Kate Russell Like pieces of a complicated puzzle, Stoke’s Greenmeadows Centre is starting to come together. Although there’s no official opening date, the centre’s café tenant Lynley Gilchrist-Lunn is starting to envisage the finish line. The project has been plagued with delays after multiple faults in its construction were found, requiring months of repair work. The building has been progres-

sively opened since late last year and Lynley was able to start operating her business, The Garden Window Café, at the end of January. They are joined by Stoke Tennis, who took occupation of their area in December, followed by Nelson Cricket last month. Stoke Rugby will be able to occupy their area in time for pre-training at the end of February with their changing rooms already open for use. Stoke Seniors can move in when the whole building obtains

certification. “It’s very exciting to finally be here,” says Lynley. “It’s looking promising now and it will be great to work with all the groups and make Stoke more cohesive. “It’s been a long journey, but we’re nearly over the line.” She says the café has been humming so far. “It’s going really well. People have been supportive and we’re starting to hit our stride.” As reported by Alec Louverdis,

Nelson City Council’s group manager infrastructure, other elements completed so far include the cedar cladding panelling, windows, stormwater slot drains, exterior veneer blockwork and internal floor polishing. All internal work to the club rooms is complete, along with deck verandas and balustrades, office spaces, toilets, reception area, store rooms, lighting/alarms/CCTV, planting and mechanical works. Work on the roof and main hall is

still ongoing. Alec confirmed that contractor Watts and Hughs have continued to resource the project with qualified labour, with “quality still being the main focus”. The Garden Window Cafe is open Tuesday to Sunday 7:30am - 4pm, and while Lynley says they don’t have a blueprint for how things will go, there are plenty of opportunities ahead. “We are open to suggestions if people have some good ideas.”

NEWS Port Nelson loses top boss: Port Nelson chief executive Martin Byrne will be standing down from his position this September. Martin commenced the role in 2004 and has led the organisation through the last fifteen years. Over that period, cargo volumes have grown from 2.45 million revenue tonnes in 2003 to 3.6 million in 2018, container volumes from 44,632 to 121,483 TEU and revenue from $25.4 million to $67.2 million. Martin has built a strong management team, improved reporting to shareholders and worked closely with local community and charitable organisations. Port Nelson say are looking to recruit a replacement prior to the end of September. Lake Rotoiti Boat show: The Antique and Classic Boat Show at Lake Rotoiti is on this weekend with the event celebrating 20 years of Kiwi heritage boats. Man who assaulted mother convicted Sara Hollyman A man who punched his mother in the face before hitting her six more times and then smashing a television and putting his hand through a glass door has been convicted in the Nelson District Court. The court heard on Monday that Isaac James O’GradyByrne, 18, pleaded guilty to charges of wilful damage and assault with intent to injure, relating to a July incident where he assaulted his mother and damaged her property. This incident happened on July 6, 2018, after he had been drinking alcohol. According to the statement

of facts, O’Grady-Byrne had become angry and calmed down multiple times throughout the night. However, he eventually ended up standing in front of his mother and abusing her. When his partner tried to intervene by sitting on the victim’s knee, the victim told her to get off and stood up. This enraged O’GradyByrne who told the victim “don’t you talk to my f*****g girlfriend like that”. He then punched the victim in the face, grabbed her by her hair, pulled her to the ground and punched her six more times in the head. Others in the house managed to get him away

from the victim but, in his state, O’Grady-Byrne then punched a wall-mounted television and threw a vacuum cleaner at the wall. On his way out of the home he punched the glass front door, leaving blood and glass through the entry-way before throwing an object through another glass door. He was found by police at Nelson Hospital receiving treatment for the cuts on his hands. The court also heard that on December 30, O’GradyByrne was intoxicated in the CBD when he got into an argument with staff members of a Bridge St takeaway after they refused to give him free food.

He became verbally abusive and then spat at the staff before running away. He was arrested a short time later by police and, while being transferred to the Nelson Police Station, he also spat in the face of an officer. He pleaded guilty to charges of assaulting police and disorderly behaviour. Judge Chris Tuohy convicted the man on all four charges and remanded him on bail. He ordered a pre-sentence report, restorative justice referral and made a protection order in favour of the victim. He will be sentenced in the Nelson District Court on April 15.

Forest fire concert all go Matt McCrorie The public now have an opportunity to say thank you to all the first responders and volunteers that helped fight the Pigeon Valley forest fire. The fire was the largest forest fire in New Zealand history, blazing for several weeks and causing residents across Pigeon, Teapot and Redwood valleys, along with Wakefield to evacuate their homes. Fortunately, responders were able to protect homes and families, with only one house destroyed. It is proposed that on Saturday March 23 there will be a parade down Queen Street for all the responders and volunteers who helped in the effort, across the board, ranging from firefighters and police, to any volunteers lent a hand in some form or another. The public are invited to come down and cheer on the marchers. The parade will end with an outdoor concert at the A&P showgrounds, organised by Waimea Weekly publisher Steve Page, in conjunction with the Tasman District Council, and supported by a wealth of other local businesses such as NBS, Richmond Mall and other local businesses. Alongside several local bands, ac-

claimed New Zealand rock band Warratahs are set to perform, known for their hits such as Hands of my Heart and Maureen, both have which become Kiwi classics. The band has said they are “really looking forward to getting up and performing.” Steve says the concert is a way of saying thank you to all of the volunteers who worked hard to fight the fire. The concert will be free for all responders and volunteers and their immediate family. It will be $10 per person for the general public. The cost of putting on the event is being paid for by sponsorship from local businesses, so “100 per cent of the $10 you pay to get in goes towards the mayoral relief fund,” says Steve. He says the event is not only a great opportunity to say thank you to all the responders and volunteers who helped fight the forest fire, but also to celebrate the end of a traumatic and challenging time and put on a “great party for everyone to enjoy.” There will be more details to follow in coming weeks. Nelson's love of its land was on full display at the weekend as more than a hundred ecowarriors helped clean up the Waimea Inlet. Green party leader Jamie Shaw joined Nelson City Councillor Matt Lawrey in leading the clean-up crew around Nelson's waterfront. Young and old armed themselves with a bag and gloves to trudge through mud,

swamp and bush, picking up trash. James has been to countless clean ups around the country but says Saturday was by far the biggest turn-out he had seen. "People of Nelson turn out to these kinds of things because there is such a great sense of community and care for the environment." Matt says teams collected 316kg of rubbish from the edge of Waimea Estuary.

"That's a lot when you consider much of it was made up of plastic and polystyrene." He says one item that particularly concerned people was the number of cigarette butts they picked up near Whakatu Drive. Matt says it was great example of the community coming together to do something good for the environment. Romeo Aristico, 6, says he took part because he wants to “save the world”.

Group bikes for Africa Locally Owned and Operated

After a recent trip to India Graham Snadden was so confronted by the conditions that many faced, he decided to put the wheels in motion to make a difference. An avid cycler, Graham put the call out to anyone who would be interested in a 270km ride to raise funds for World Bicycle Relief. “People ask me if I found the trip to India fun, but I actually didn’t find it fun at all. "I’d never really confronted so much poverty and the degradation of the environment in India, it really affected me. “I’m quite old now, I’m 78, so I thought I just want to do something a bit more useful in my life, I’ve got time and energy and I’m a very keen cyclist.” He had heard that there were organisations that provide bikes to poor communities in Africa and says he felt like he “struck gold” when he came across World Bicycle Relief, which manufactures basic bikes in Africa and distributes them to children, entrepreneurs and health professionals across the continent. “You’ve got kids who walk 8kms to school and midwives who need

A lot of them are walking so some may only be able to see one woman in a day, but by bike they will be able to see many more.” So on Saturday, the group of eight set out to Lake Rotoiti, where they stopped for lunch before heading along the Wairoa Valley

to Renwick where they spent the night – 180kms later. On Sunday morning, they began the journey back to Nelson confronted with a freezing southerly and the only rain the region has seen in months. “When you start getting near home and you know the road

to carry 100kg+ loads. Graham says that the ride was a complete success and says he has no plans to continue with fundraising. “It was so successful, and people were so generous, I think we touched people’s hearts, so we probably won’t do another.”

ference. Every third year the conference is hosted in the South Island and this time Nelson was chosen as its location. The conference will feature presentations from everyone from the IRD to ACC along with trust lawyers and accountancy software developers.

“It will enable our members to keep up with their education and being at the forefront of legislation,” says ATTAINZ chief executive Gary Upson. On Friday night the organisation is transporting them all to the Honest Lawyer for a night of food, drink and music before having an awards dinner at the

Rutherford Hotel on Saturday night. There will also be exhibitors from accounting providers who are presenting their wares. Gary says the big discussion will be around the Tax Working Group’s proposal for a capital gains tax and what that means for the accountants' clients around

tehe country. He says that having such an event in Nelson is a great coup for the region. Several partners will be going on a tour around the highlights of the area. “If you have 250 people coming for three or four days, I think that helps with the economic performance of a region,” says Gary.

In Chin culture, when disaster strikes the community, the community gives back. So, three days after the Pigeon Valley fire broke out, the Nelson committee that represents former refugees from Chin state in Myanmar met to decide what to do. “We decided that it was the right thing to do to collate all the Chin people and each family get together to donate at least $20 each,” says committee president Peter Sang Mang Lianching. There are around 120 families in Nelson and, together with some church donations, the amount reached $4900, which will go towards helping families who had to evacuate their homes. “The government has spent a lot of money here, so we need to contribute,” Peter says. “If we can, then we should.” There are about 530 members of

the local community now after they first arrived in Nelson in 2003. They are one of the main nationalities of Myanmar but are also one of the most persecuted minorities of the country. There have been recorded, numerous crimes against humanity in Myanmar’s western Chin state, committed mainly by the members of the Burmese Army and police. The Nelson Chin community have previously donated money to the Christchurch earthquake appeal. “All the people in the community understand that the Government has helped us and we realise we need to sacrifice a little bit to give back,” Peter says. “In our mind, this is our country and our land.” Peter has been in Nelson five years after fleeing Myanmar 15 years ago. He was waiting in Malaysia for refugee status for 10 years. Fly My Pretties return to Nelson Charles Anderson The last time Fly My Pretties were in Nelson they played to a sell-out crowd at Neudorf Vineyard. “This is a bit different,” says the band’s founder Barnaby Weir. “Rain or shine, it’s a pretty awesome line-up.” Fly My Pretties will join the John Butler Trio, Trinity Roots and L.A.B at the Trafalgar Centre this Saturday. “We fit in, we are multi genre, filled with a great group of people and some old friends.” The band is made up of a variety of different artists who have gone through its revolving doors over the years. “It’s a bit of a logistical thing,” admits Barnaby. “The best way is planning six months in advance.” This time, that strategy means that old favourite Hollie Smith will be back in the fold along with a 15-strong cast of vocalists and musicians featuring: A Girl Named Mo, Anna Coddington, Bailey Wiley, Lisa Tomlins, Ria Hall, Age Pryor, Laughton Kora, Mike Fabu-

lous, Jarney Murphy, Nigel Patterson (The Black Seeds), Ryan Prebble, Iraia Whakamoe and James Coyle (The Nudge) The band’s will run through the entire back catalogue of Fly My Pretties favourites, seeing many tracks being performed live for the first time in years. This retrospective set comes as they begin work on their first-ever studio album, which will see classics recorded in studio for the first time. “It gives the chance to be very particular and get the best takes and best tones of each song,” Barnaby says. He says he is excited about returning to Nelson, which is on something of a golden run when it comes to attracting big talent to perform here. The concert is also giving away free tickets to the concert for those affected by the fires in Pigeon Valley. “It might brighten someone’s day as it’s obviously a serious affair. Music can be a remedy to take the mind off it for a few hours.” The band performs at the Trafalgar Centre on March 2.

New chapter for Morri St

Kate Russell It’s a legacy he’s not sure he can beat, but Morri Street Cafés new owner is certainly determined to give it a crack. Gary Warner has purchased the iconic Nelson eatery from its founder Kay Field, who has been running it for an impressive 21 years. She initially opened it with family in 1997 but decided to put it up for sale last November. Gary and his partner Jessica happened to see a story about it in the Nelson Weekly that month. “I usually don’t go for more than a five-year plan, but it’s something I can see us doing for a long time,” he says. Gary, who hails from Ireland, has been living in Sydney for the past 20 years. Jessica grew up in Nelson, so the couple and their two young children are no strangers to the city. Their move here comes off the back of a year travelling the world with their children, after they decided to give up their “hectic” Sydney lifestyle. “We were partners in a corporate business, so after having our first child, renovating our house as well as more study, we decided it was all slightly nuts,” he says. So, they hit the road with a four-year-old and an eight-month-old and ended up in Nelson. “During our travel, we knew what we didn’t want to do. My ex-role was disconnected from people and the community so, when we arrived here, we knew we didn’t want corporate jobs,” says Gary. “What attracted us to Morri Street Café was its ethos of sustainability and community, the great staff and great quality food. It just felt right, so we jumped right in - quite slowly though.” He says they’re not planning on making too many major changes but would like to include a few new additions, such as a children’s art wall. “All the classics will stay, we might put a twist on a few things and are considering opening nights in the future.” Kay says her last day will be on March 12 but will stick around for a few days to ensure the handover goes smoothly.

We also stand in big flexi tubs for showering and use that water to flush toilets or water the veges, washing dishes by hand and catching washing machine water. Jacqueline Watson Water is life. Shower every second day (or third) and just sponge-wash in between if needed. Divert water from the washing machine and sink, if biodegradable products used. Clean teeth with the tap off. Nelson Matters Nelsonians need to know how they will be impacted by the Government’s Capital Gains Tax (CGT) now Labour’s former Finance Minister Michael Cullen’s detailed proposal is out. It will start in April 2021, and will cost families and businesses in Nelson and Tasman $130m a year when fully implemented. The CGT will be applied to any increase in value of any asset like property, business, farm, shares or retirement investment. It does not apply to personal cars, boats, art, jewellery or wine collections. The rate of the CGT is the person’s highest rate of income tax which for most people will be

30c/$ if they earn over $48,000 p.a or 33c/$ if they earn over $70,000 p.a. This is double Labour’s previously proposed CGT of 15c/$. It makes no allowance for inflation. This makes it one of the most onerous capital tax regimes in the world. Many Nelson families will be hard hit by the detail of the CGT. It hits Nelsonian’s 50,000 Kiwisaver accounts. It applies to the family bach. It applies to the family home if one has flatmates and can apply if one has boarders, a home office, a home business or if the home is used for AirBnB. The CGT also applies to lifestyle blocks over 0.45ha of which there are hundreds in

Nelson and Tasman. This CGT is particularly tough on Nelson’s 4,000 small businesses. Every business will need to be valued including goodwill costing an estimated $20million. Any gain in value from that will now be taxed. It will be a boom for accountants, lawyers and valuers. Businesses are going to be more focussed on tax management and less on growing the region’s wealth. My first objection is that it will hurt the overall economy, costing jobs and investment. It discourages enterprise and productivity. My second objection is that New Zealand does not need a new

tax or higher taxes. The Government is awash with cash from the huge surpluses and low debt left by National. The top 10% of earners already pay 70% of total income tax. My third objection is compliance cost and complexity. Members of the Government’s own tax working group say it’s a lot of cost for not much gain. My fourth objection is fairness. This CGT does not apply to the millionaire’s mansion, super yacht or art collection, but hits hard the average kiwi family if they own a bach, lifestyle block, modest rental property, or run a small business. My fifth objection is that the

CGT will push up rents. Landlords will pass the extra costs on and it will discourage investment in new rental housing. Far from encouraging more productive investment, this CGT tells people to put more of their money into owner-occupied housing. Labour’s Capital Gains Tax is driven by envy and ideology. It punishes people who work hard and take risks to get ahead. Join our campaign to stop this new tax at National Party HQ this Friday at 5pm.

Piano virtuoso hangs up his fingers Charles Anderson Nelsonians have one last chance next month to hear one of the

country’s most respected pianists in action. After almost 50 years as a professional musician, Michael Hous-

toun says he has decided to retire, “hang up my fingers”, and begin a new phase of his life. Michael was a patron of the Nelson School of Music for many years and has been a great supporter of music in the region. So, it is only fitting that he plays one of his last concerts at the Nelson Centre for Musical Arts. “For a while I thought I would not say anything and just quietly fade away - still an attractive option,” he says. “But my musical life has been given to me by my beautiful New Zealand audience and it only seems right to let them know.” He plays from a large repertoire which stretches from J.S. Bach to the present day, including 40 concertos and chamber music. Robyn Sheves of the NCMA says it will be Nelson’s last chance to hear Michael perform here and

Theatre gets new manager Kate Russell

A familiar face at Nelson’s Theatre Royal has stepped up to take on the manager's role. Eliane Polack has been appointed to the position after spending three years as the theatre’s operations manager. This follows the resignation of long-standing manager Janice Marthen, and the swift departure of her successor, Hal Martin, who was only in the job for three months.

Nelson Historic Theatre Trust chair Mark Christensen says the theatre will be in “excellent hands” with Eliane at the helm. He believes she has a thorough understanding of the support required to promote and present touring and local shows. Elaine says she is honoured to be in the position. “I have a lot of ideas,” she says. "I’m talking with some local groups to see what other possibilities there are to make best use of the theatre.”

Art Return to Nelson for Scottish improviser: Following years of sold-out runs at the Prague and Edinburgh Fringes, Scotland's biggest improvised comedy troupe hit Nelson for a threeday run next week. Men with Coconuts have established themselves as one of the biggest acts at the Edinburgh Fringe, playing to thousands of tourists and locals alike. The troupe’s own Charlie Hindley knows Nelson well. Back in 2010, Charlie was the Head of Drama at Soundstage Performing Arts Academy and can’t wait to come back. Men with Coconuts are presenting a full weekend of improvised performances and workshops at Bridge Street’s Ghost Light Theatre from March 8 to 10. Details at www.ghostlight.nz Award-winning local production back on: Some nights Pete Coates is the head barman at the Cod & Lobster – but next week he is the powerhouse performer behind ‘The Man Who was Thursday’. The show debuted at the Nelson Fringe Festival where it won Best Show. Adapted from GK Chesterton’s novel and directed by Giles Burton, it tells the story of the poet Gabriel Syme, who is recruited to fight the forces of Anarchy. All 20 characters (and an elephant) are performed by Pete in this rollercoaster production. It will play at Ghost Light Theatre at 7pm on March 5 and 6 before heading to Wellington and then the Prague Fringe Festival.

Elaine will be supported by the theatre’s core staff, including Chrissy Olsen, Aude Graf, Kate Alexander and JR Richardson, as well as their team of parttime bar and front of house staff and more than 100 voluntary ushers. “We have a wonderful team here - it’s a real team effort,” says Elaine. The Theatre Royal is the oldest purpose-built performance theatre in New Zealand and first opened its doors in 1878.

he prices in the table below are used to charge electricity retailers in the region served by Network Tasman. Retailers determine how to package this cost together with the energy, metering and other costs when setting the prices that appear in your power account. Our prices cover the cost of our local distribution network and the cost of national transmission of electricity.

The current Group 1 price category (15 kVA capacity) for most residential and non-residential consumers is being replaced with 3 new price categories: 1GL, 1RL and 1RS. Non-residential connections will be Price Category 1GL. The 1RL category is for primary-residence low-use connections, ie consuming less than 8,000 kWh per year. The 1RS category is for residential connections that are not a primary residence (eg bach) or consume over 8,000 kWh pa.

Network Tasman’s residential prices for the average consumer will decrease by 5% (about $3.50 incl GST per month) from 1 April 2019 to reflect decreased costs of national connection for the coming year. Discounts are credited directly to consumers’ power accounts for eligible connections twice per year. The first discount will be calculated based on usage from 1 April 2019 to 31 August 2019, the second on usage from 1 September 2019 to 31 March 2020.

Electricity retailers already classify residential connections by the primary residence/8,000 kWh threshold, and we will be using their advice to determine the new price category for each current Group 1 connection from 01 April 2019.

Every few weeks we sit down with someone interesting who is doing something interesting. This week we speak with husband and wife duo Roger and Bridget Sanders who have been creating art in Nelson since 2001. Now they are on the cusp of their biggest creative adventure yet – a European tour with their children’s theatre show. They spoke with Nelson Weekly's Charles Anderson. What are each of your backgrounds? Roger: I started off doing storytelling, which didn’t require anybody else. I ended up doing a lot of stuff around the country. Bridget: I was a visual artist, didn’t get involved in theatre until 2008. Then we decided to start making work together, primarily creating children’s shows. How did you come to work together? Roger: I found the storytelling work was quite lonely. Bridget’s skills really

So why are you heading off? Bridget: It is the unknown, an adventure, empty nest syndrome, maybe. Nelson is a great place to base yourself but you have to get out. We have been travelling around with our company for three years and we thought ‘why not go further’. It would be a fun way of doing more with our lives. We are taking our show, Kotuku and

What is it like working together as husband and wife? Roger: It can be full on. We argue a lot but know each other well enough to know not to take it personally. So where are you going? Bridget: We are going to England to the Brighton Fringe Festival. Then straight away we drive to Prague

What are some of the challenges of such a trip? Roger: Not having a reputation is a big one. But the more you do the better known you get. You have to trust the process. If you didn’t go until it was all figured out then you wouldn’t go at all. So you just have to have something and then go and trust that you can fill in the gaps. Why is it so important? Roger: I think it’s in your bones. It’s something that, if we aren’t doing it, it feels like something is missing. Bridget: It’s what we are meant to do. There is something so special about creating something and then sharing it with the world. We perform this work in a lot of schools. Some of these students have never seen a performance before and it’s so gratifying to see them light up with it. That sharing is the biggest thing.

We encouraged Simon to add things that are fun rather than being totally practical or utilitarian and it’s remarkable because it has things like an amazing staircase which spirals up like a work of art and a stunning foyer which the Nelson community can use for community events. The building has gorgeous views over Tasman Bay and to the mountains; it’s a very lovely space. It’s also somewhere our consumers and producers can come together,” says Pic. “By building connections between us, our customers and the jars in their cupboards I feel we connect with

spired him to start his business which began in his garage in Nelson. “I got really cross with the rubbish I was buying from the supermarket with added sugar and emulsifiers in it and it wasn’t tasting as good as it used to. I started out quite small – there was just me – I was roasting peanuts in the garage and grinding them up on the kitchen table. Today we have 42 people making up to 25,000 jars of peanut butter a day; it’s just extraordinary! It’s a massive change and these days we are selling it all around the world!” The nuts Pic uses come from Queensland, Australia. “We are currently doing some trials and are growing peanuts in New Zealand, but it’s only at

the very beginning stages so it will be a wee while before we can make peanut butter with New Zealand peanuts but if the trials go well, it will happen.” “It’s been 11 years since I first sold peanut butter at the Nelson Market – I only ever intended to get a bit of pocket money for the weekend, but as the demand for my peanut butter started to grow, my business grew with it. It’s all about celebrating the journey. Start something in your garage. Stick with it. Keep going… and the next thing you know you’ve got some monstrous great business going! The hardest part of my journey has been my eyesight because I’m legally blind, which has been bit of an

issue. It’s also a real advantage in that I’ve been forced to delegate because so many people can do certain things much better than I ever could! If I can inspire people, it’s my duty to do that.” Unsurprisingly, Pic was awarded the NZ Order of Merit last year and he proudly talked about his Mum and Dad who came down for the presentation. “It was exciting for them and they were going to come down for the factory opening but sadly my Dad passed away on the Monday prior to the event, which was a bit of a hard one to get my head around. Dad would have been determined that I continue and do the opening.”

Ben Coman, managing director of Coman Construction says: “In late 2015 Pic, my Grandfather Bill and I had some initial discussions around the development of a new factory at 49 Saxton Road. “We firstly carried out a master planning process for the new development. Stage 1 prioritised a warehouse and canopy to cater for Pic's immediate storage and loading requirements, which was constructed

in 2016. Following on from stage 1 we commenced with stage 2, which is comprised of a new production factory, pilot factory, offices, public foyer and amenities, and stage 3 office, exhibition and tour fitout. The land, which spans three sections with an area of 7700m2 is in a prime spot among other food producers and industry.” Ben says “It was a highly bespoke design, a mixed use building, and it

reflected Pic's as a company. Pic had a lot of input into the type of building that he wanted and its functionality. We worked closely with architect Simon Hall from Jerram Tocker Barron to refine the design and construction. "Pic wanted a steampunk, industrial and whimsical building which has influenced the design of building. I think it’s a testament to JTB Architects who have pulled off a stunning and spectacular building.” Ben says there was a lot of front end of work with design coordination, pricing and procurement of specialist subtrades to create the bespoke elements within the building, such as the curved staircase with central lift, the 4-tonne steel roof stacks, and 6-tonne steel entry steel cylinder. "We worked closely with Pic’s operational team to refine what was going to be needed as far as his processing lines were concerned and their servicing requirements. "That design continued to develop with a further staged fitout for the office and exhibitions spaces, which was interesting and different as far as the construction and delivery was concerned. "The norm would be to get a prescribed set of drawings and build that in one stage.” Ben says the overall construction of Pic’s Peanut Butter World has been a

"I would also like to acknowledge my grandfather Bill who was very instrumental in bringing this build together and also my staff and subcontractors, who went above and beyond for us and Pic.” Ben says it’s great that Coman Construction have been able to use local re-

sources by way of people and materials. "We’ve worked very closely with Placemakers. They were very accommodating and proactive servicing the job." Ben says the team were keen to utilise local specialist subtrades and resources which he says was great because they got buy in from the community which wanted to be part of the project. "The only trade from out of town was the massive curved steel work entry

I’m very proud of everyone’s involvement in the development of Pic’s Peanut Butter World and it's been amazing to see how well its already been received by the public on its opening day. It’s a really successful outcome, it’s iconic for Nelson and a showpiece for Nelson – a destination people will come to. They will come to Nelson to go to Pic’s.” There were certainly lots of enthusiastic, smiling locals and visitors at Pic’s Peanut Butter World over the weekend; the new building having no doubt made a lasting first impression with its fantastic spiral staircase with a lift through the centre, its mezzanine exhibition and viewing gallery and redcarpet tour path. Better still, heaps of them got to have their photo taken with the wonderful man himself – Pic Picot! It only seems like yesterday when Pic was humbly roasting peanuts in his garage and selling his peanut butter at the market, but today he is the king of

As a not-for-profit venture, our aim is to serve the local community with reasonably priced, healthy food.” Matt says their prices are very competitive. “For example, our raspberries are $5 a punnet, strawberries are $3.50 a punnet, our tomatoes are just $2 a punnet and our cucumbers can be as little as $1. Having won almost every accolade there is in the athletics world, Barry Hunt has now joined the most illustrious group in New Zealand sport. The Nelson man has dedicated 70 years of service to the sport he loves and has been acknowledged with a prestigious Halberg Lifetime Achievement Award. Barry received a standing ovation last Thursday in Auckland as his extensive list of accolades were listed. Starting initially as a gifted track athlete, he then progressed into a range of administration roles at club, centre, national and international levels. He has coached world champions, witnessed sporting history and helped create dynasties. Barry’s ageing legs don’t move as quick as when he set New Zealand sprinting records. Instead, he says it felt like a

100m distance to the Spark Arena stage in front of more than 1000 people. “My wife said I looked like all I was focussing on was not falling over.” His prepared speech went unspoken after he was played off the stage following an interview. “I think they were a bit pressed for time, I didn’t get to thank my wife Mavis for everything she has done.” Barry says it was a fantastic night spent rubbing shoulders with a who’s who of New Zealand sport. Having made a positive impact on so many athlete’s lives, one was sure to let him know. New Zealand discus legend Beatrice Faumuina went overseas with Barry as a 14-year-old on her first international athletics trip. She thanked the track legend for his influence on her early career. “I have always believed in hard work and striving for excellence,” responded Barry.

Barry was even congratulated by supreme award winner Tom Walsh, who he hadn’t seen since he was a teenager. “He has grown a bit.” The Halberg marks a staggering fifth lifetime award for the athletics stalwart. Barry says it was the culmination of 70 years of dedication. “I have been an athlete, coach, selector, manager, timekeeper, been to world championships, Commonwealth Games and formed two clubs.” The 87-year-old is from an era when amateur coaches gave their life for the love of the game, not the pay cheque. “I was never paid for my coaching, but I had some wonderful experiences.”

Cycling: The Tasman Wheelers Cycling Club are running a Mighty Masters Carnival for track and road cyclists at Saxton Velodrome on Saturday March 16. The event will see master’s grade cyclists from around the South Island and lower North Island compete. There will be six major events catering for master’s men and women 40+ years. Track racing will take place on proper velodrome fixed-wheel bikes as well as some events that road bikes can be used in. There will also be an event where riders will be able to launch themselves on their yester-year bikes and assorted gear. Sailing: The last two days of racing for the 2019 Flying Dutchman World Championships wrapped up in Nelson on Thursday. The results in the last three races were a benefit for the top three boats. HUN 70 had two firsts and a second, GER 88 a third, second and first, and NED 26 a sec-

ond, third and fourth. HUN 70 (Szabolcs Majthenyi and András Domokos) were declared overall World Champions for 2019 with a total score of nine points. The top three boats dominated the event. Top New Zealander was America-based Paul Scoffin in seventh. ROWING: A Nelson crew has been crowned Club Men’s Quad champions. Rowers Dylan Crick, Will Johnston, Connor Johnston and Chad Ricketts from the Nelson Rowing Club won gold at Lake Ruataniwha in Twizel. Held from February 19-23, the regatta saw novice rowers competing on the same course as the Elite rowers, who have represented New Zealand on the world stage. Emma Twigg made an impressive debut in her first national event since the Rio 2016 Olympics, taking Gold in the women’s premier single scull (7:24.22).

Stoke Nayland backed up their NCA 50-over championship with the T20 title as well, at Marsden Rec on Sunday. The defending champions fought hard to piece together 132 for eight in their 20 overs against ACOB and held on for a thrilling win despite some late fireworks from Daniel Grimes. Darius Skeaping faced 41 balls for his half century and was dismissed off the final delivery of

the innings. Ricky Edwards supported him in a fifty-run partnership for the sixth wicket and Dylan Eginton provided a typically powerful cameo at the back end. ACOB never really got going in their chase and lost BJ Barnett and Greg Chitty by the end of the second over. Skeaping and Tim O’Connor bowled tidily and were well backed up in the field with solid catching and also a couple of nice run outs from Sam Chamberlain who had claimed an unheralded hattrick on Saturday.

There were 32 runs required from the last three overs, and when the ninth wicket fell for 107 all seemed lost for ACOB.
