Severe water restrictions loom Sara Hollyman
Nelson is looking “down the barrel” of severe water restrictions as city faces lowest water levels in 15 years. The Maitai Dam, which provides the bulk of Nelson’s water supply, is currently at 170.89m and is losing 80 to 90mls a day. It is
understood that the dam is now 3m below its full level. In April 2006, it reached a level of 170.45m above sea level, the lowest since monitoring this way began in 2004. “We are looking down the barrel of the next level of restrictions to come into play soon, if we don’t get rain,” says councillor Stuart
Walker. Nelson has 19,032 residential connections who use on average 272 litres each per day, more than 5 million litres a day in total. Residents and businesses are urged to comply with these water restrictions now to protect the long-term water supply. “There is a genuine need to con-
serve as much water as we can, it may not be the most desirable thing for people to cut back but it’s a matter of prudence at this point,” says Stuart. Nelson is in stage two water restrictions which places a total ban on sprinklers except for areas of high-value such as bowling greens, golf courses, cricket
pitches and public gardens. “Essentially these are areas that will take months or years and potentially many thousands of dollars to reinstate,” says Nelson City Council acting group manager infrastructure Marg Parfitt. After a post on a social media

The Peruvian says: “I can do magic.” He is hired. “That was like a magic trick,” says Nico Muto, who arrived in town from Lima about two months ago. The bar owner was Nick Widley of the new Hardy St establishment, Kismet. When Nico arrived, the sister bar to the Cod & Lobster was just on the verge of being finished. Nico had just completed his marketing degree from the University of Lima and was looking for a break. He also happens to be a professional magician. Nick happened to be a sometime juggler. “Maybe we had a connection,” Nico says.

Nico has been entertaining guests with closeup sleight of hand magic that bamboozles them, even when they are stonecold sober. “People just go crazy. There are not many magicians around here, I think.” Nico says those reactions are what drew him to the craft in the first place. “The first time I saw magic the thing that attracted me was the faces of the people. Faces of mystery, wonder and surprise and curiosity.” He says the secret to a good trick is simplicity.

“If you can create a history around it you can really appreciate it.” Nico is in Nelson until March when he hopes to buy a car and travel the length of the country. “I’m planning to share magic with as many people as I can.” Nico’s appearance coincides with Nelson’s first ever cocktail competition that is being hosted by Kismet and Dancing Sands Distillery. The event on February 25 brings together the city’s best mixologists to try their hand at creating some special drinking sensations. Kismet owner Kymberly Widley says there are so many bars with great cocktails that it seemed only right to let them battle it out. The idea is to roll the competition throughout the country but the local version is to test out the concept. “The space is set up for two bartenders to go head to head and for people to come along and watch. It will be a lot of fun.”

Staff reporters More than a week on from the devastating fires that struck the region, crews are still working to ensure hotspots don’t flare up and continue burning. Ian Reade, the principal rural fire officer for the Pigeon Valley Fire, says the fire is now 2343ha in size and has a perimeter of 35.4km. He says there are still helicopters working. “Because where we have hotspots there is risk of those hotspots spreading. “The helicopters are used to keep any flare-ups down while the ground crews methodically work their way around the hotspots. Those ground crews are out digging up and cooling off those hotspots. The news comes as Bill Reid, a veteran helicopter pilot, is treated for minor injuries after crashing a helicopter during the work. He is said to be recovering well and in “good spirits”. Meanwhile, water reservoir in Redwood Valley, which supplies water to 35 properties, has been damaged during firefighting operations.

Civil Defence say the Bullseye Reservoir has been steadily losing water since early Saturday morning when water pipes were likely damaged by bulldozers during the creation of firebreaks. Weather on Monday halted repair works to the reservoir as well as stopping residents from having restricted access to the valleys. There was no restricted access to the residents of Redwood, Eves and Teapot Valleys earlier in the week. Civil Defence Controller Roger Ball said this was because of high winds and the associated extreme fire danger.
“We understand that this will be a disappointment for many residents, however, safety is the paramount consideration.” A Civil Defence spokesperson says they are also watching the movements of Cyclone Oma very closely. "There is currently a high degree of uncertainty about the cyclone's tracks so we are developing contingency plans for all eventualities." Civil Defence representatives would also like to remind all residents who have already been allowed to return home that they need to be prepared to evacuate again at short notice.

was on offer. The increase in roll is starting to put strain on classrooms, but Daniel says this will be resolved when a refurbished 12 classroom block is reopened next term. Nelson College deputy headmaster Tim Tucker says they have welcomed around 200 year nine students this year, which is slightly below their usual intake. Cathy Ewing, Nelson College for Girls principal, says their year nine intake for this year is just under 200. “Our numbers are on par with last year and we had 42 new enrolments at other levels.”

Paul Palmer learned to sign before he could speak. The Nelson man has been the face of the Nelson fires over the past few weeks, translating media updates to the deaf community. This on-screen exposure has seen him become somewhat of a celebrity in the city with scores stopping to shake his now-famous hands. Paul says it has been a whirlwind. “I usually just speak to deaf people on a one-on-one basis, never been involved in such a large-scale exercise.” Like many, Paul first heard about the blaze through a phone notification. “I was at work and saw a news headline pop up. When I walked outside I saw the cloud heading toward Nelson. “I realized it was a big deal, but still did not think for a second I would be called on to help.” The next day Paul got the call to attend the first media briefing on the fire.

"It is an entryway into another culture, deaf people have their own way of thinking and doing things and it is beautiful.” Paul will continue to translate during the emergency as required. “I’m in it for the long haul,” he says. Paul has been encouraged by the number of people who have approached him wanting to learn sign language. “Don’t be embarrassed, the deaf community do not hold it against you if your sign language is not up to scratch, they just appreciate the effort.”

No timing for Welcome Cloak installation Kate Russell There is still no date in sight for when the Welcome Cloak will be installed at Millers Acre. Mark Preston-Thomas, acting group manager community services at Nelson City Council, says they are currently in the process of working with the architects who designed the building and getting input from the artist to arrive at the best way of displaying the artwork. “We don’t have a firm date for this as yet. The aim is to devise a plan that shows the artwork to the best effect but also limits any possibility for tangling in the future,” he says. “In the meantime, some repairs and strengthening work on the Welcome Cloak is still pending. We will advise a date when we have more clarity once these details have been sorted.” It was announced in September last year that the cloak would be moving to Millers Acre after being removed from Saltwater Creek.

Graham calls time on trading Charles Anderson
When Graham Abbott first started his store selling second-hand furniture, Edwardian antiques were all the rage. “We would get them off the truck and people would pretty much buy them straight off the footpath,” he says. That was almost 40 years ago. He set it up because he wanted to go into business by himself and was looking for a way to do that without costing him a fortune. Furniture, he thought. Everybody needs furniture. Graham and his brother set about becoming the one-stop shop for renters and new home buyers, intent on decking out their properties with decor. But times have changed since then. In 1993, the store which used to be on Hardy St, moved down the road to Bridge St. Then came the internet and TradeMe. “People like to try things out and find out what the value is. "But now people will come in and see what something is worth and then try sell it themselves,” says Graham. “It’s just one of those things.” So, Graham and his brother have decided to call time on it. “We are tired of lifting things,” he says. “It’s a hard job.” When times were busier, he had a staff who could help lift the furniture. Now it was just them and their wives. “We decided it’s time for a change.” They sold the building and their lease is soon up. He says it’s been an all-encompassing job but he will miss it. “A lot of customers become your friends and you deal with them and try your best for them.” The shop has a closing down sale for the next two weeks before they shut up shop for good.

After two months of uncertainty, the Tahunanui Community Centre is almost in the clear. The centre was closed in late December when its dire financial position was revealed, and it was initially thought that it would have to be liquidated to pay back the tens of thousands of dollars it owed. But new board chair Murray Leaning is happy to report that things are on the up. “We are no longer insolvent. We’ve cleared all debt apart from some payments owed to staff, and we’ll be working through that in the next little while. “It’s just a question now of figuring out that last bit, but it’s a much more insignificant debt -
hugely different.” There were fears that its building would have to be sold but that is now off the table. The centre has also recently received grants from The Lion Foundation and the Department of Internal Affairs. Committee member of the centre, Mark French, has also offered to man the front desk 20 hours a week to help get services back up and running. “We’re very lucky to have Mark there. Everybody knows Frenchy, he’s just the right guy,” Murray says. All volunteer classes are now back up and running, as well as the health nurse and Kai Rescue - which Murray says is in hot demand. Nelson City Council also has their facilities contractor operating the building for three months, at their cost.
“Another important thing for us was to get the preschool reopened, and with the help from the Nelson Kindergarten Association they now have record attendance numbers.” Murray says the centre will work on a slightly different model to what there was before, but they are still looking at what a sustainable community centre will look like. We will be getting advice and assistance with that from the Department of Internal Affairs, Funders, other community organisations, NCC and other stakeholders, plus, we will be consulting with the community about what they would like. “Altogether, we’re happy to say things are looking good. We’ve made really good progress. “We’ve had a lot of help from a lot of places - it’s been quite humbling.”
Network Tasman takes a proactive approach to keeping trees away from our power lines by surveying all of our lines on a regular basis. We store the information collected in these surveys in a database. Our database records the full history of each surveyed site, including the condition of nearby trees. If we identify trees that are growing too close to power lines, we let property owners know by sending them what is known as a cut and trim notice (CT Notice), as required by The Electricity (Hazard from Trees) Regulations. We issue more than 1500 CT Notices each year. Property owners are responsible for keeping their trees away from power lines. However, the regulations state that each tree is entitled to one free trim – we record whether a tree has had its free trim in our database. When our vegetation team undertakes a survey they also look for trees with high-risk issues that could cause the tree to fall onto the lines, such as trees that are diseased, damaged, or have branches splitting out. All of these factors have the potential to damage the network and cause power outages. To help mitigate this risk, we negotiate a solution with the tree owner (this often involves trimming or felling the tree). Last year, more than 3500 trees posing a risk to power lines were trimmed or felled by network certified arborists. Surveying our lines and notifying tree owners in this way has dramatically reduced the number of power outages attributed to line damage caused by trees. With the cooperation of tree owners, our electricity supply has been more resilient and storm response costs have been lowered. This means everyone pays less for their electricity. If you’re a landowner you may have been contacted by one of our surveyors for permission to access your land and undertake a vegetation survey on your property. Our surveyors are always happy to answer your questions about clearances required, the safe cutting and disposal of trees, and issues with vegetation close to power lines. It’s important for all of us to keep an eye on trees and vegetation and make sure that power lines are out of harm’s way. Nelson on Cyclone Oma watch: Nelson could get some wet weather at the end of this week if the remnants of Cyclone Oma arrive on our shores. Forecasters say it’s too early to predict whether the cyclone would track towards New Zealand, but it is one of several possibilities. Cyclone Oma, currently near Vanuatu, has been upgraded to Category 3, meaning it has highly destructive winds of more than 160km/h. Niwa says that if the cyclone did reach New

The addition of the Beech Glade Bridge on the pedestrian loop track on the valley floor takes visitors across the Brook Stream, just beyond the outdoor classroom. The project was enabled by sizeable grant from the McKee Trust to honour the memory of Jock Braithwaite, a long time Sanctuary volunteer. Speaking during the dedication, Brook Waimarama Trust Chair Dave Butler spoke of the importance of the bridge. “The McKee Trust has made an important
contribution to the project, facilitating access for all to experience this quite spectacular forest and the dramatic responses of birdlife, insect life and vegetation being seen since achieving pest-free status.” The loop track was recently upgraded to wheelchair standard with support from the Lotteries Grant Board. One final bridge is yet to be built over the main dam to complete the extended loop experience. Jock’s widow Rosemary Braithwaite said Jock would have been “very delighted” to see what is being achieved.

SKATING THROUGH NELSON: Though the surface was softer, the wipeouts were just as spectacular as Nelson Intermediate played host to the artificial ice-skating rink last week. Nelson Matters Our community rightly takes great pride in the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT). It has for 115 years provided the skills and qualifications for Nelson to succeed. I am very worried about the Government’s announcement last week to force NMIT into a mega merger with all 16 Polytechnics around the country. This radical plan takes control away from NMIT’s Council made up of Nelson industry, community and student representatives. It will instead be run by Wellington bureaucrats. It will be less independent, less responsible and less innovative. Centralisation will over time mean fewer training programmes and
fewer staff in Nelson. NMIT is currently one of New Zealand’s most successful technical institutions. The Nursing and Maritime Schools are internationally recognised for excellence. The innovative programmes in aquaculture, viticulture, aviation, tourism and horticulture are vital to the region. The commerce and business degree and diploma programmes are superb. NMIT is also financially strong. It has about $20 million in reserves and assets of $100 million. It has run a surplus in eight of the last 10 years and is budgeting another surplus this year. My experience as Minister of Education was that the closer decisions were made to students, the better they worked for students. I got far better advice on education policy from

National is keen to engage with Nelson on the fate of NMIT, and the similar changes proposed for schools that centralise decision making. We see potential for positive reform, like improving the funding model for schools and polytechnics, but change must be for the better. Mike puts mind to saving monarchs Sara Hollyman A Tahunanui resident is offering monarch butterflies a chance at salvation. Mike Evans has an “active mind” which he put to good use throughout his life as a marine engineer, but more than four years ago health complications meant he had to say goodbye to physical work. He says, initially it was a struggle to fill in his time, but then he discovered monarch butterflies. It all started with a friend telling him that they had found some “huge plants” with eggs on them, so he took some cuttings. Swan plants around the region are generally bare as wasps kill the caterpillars soon after the egg hatches. “They don’t stand a chance,” Mike says. His operation has grown to include three terrariums and two tents in his back yard to grow the monarchs. The circle of life begins with the eggs, which Mike has set up in a $35 Kmart tent. “We are lamenting the fact that we are losing the

Photo: Sara Hollyman. monarchs and people think it’s too hard, but it’s so easy.” Once they hatch, they are transferred into a terrarium where they grow until they reach adult stage. Mike then transfers them into the chrysalis terrarium to see out their final days as a caterpillar. A custom-made mesh lid gives them something to cling onto while they await the transformation into a butterfly.
Some of them head to a friend of Mike’s place in Todds Valley, others are transferred into a second tent in the back yard to breed and lay more eggs. One leaf in this tent has 21 eggs on it. Mike estimates he has at least 150 caterpillars, hundreds of eggs, 20 butterflies and has so far successfully hatched more than 90 chrysalises. “It’s pretty frustrating not being able to do physical
work, so what does an active mind do?” He says he would love to see kindergartens and schools get into it if they want to and is more than happy to show people how easy it is to set up. “It’s probably not going to save the world but it’s an awesome feeling when you see kids buzzing on them. “It’s definitely better than sitting on my arse doing nothing,” say Mike.

They are the car that started it all. This weekend, the national Model T Ford club rally will see more than 45 Model T Fords from across the country gather at the Richmond Speedway. The cars, range in age from 1910 to 1927, including open tourers, closed cars, roadsters, speedsters and vans. Rally director Rob Thompson says over 120 members are coming to Nelson for the rally, from as far north as Warkworth and as far south as Mosgiel, and even one member travelling from Australia. The New Zealand Model T Ford Club has around 250 members, and the last time the rally was in the area was in Motueka, 16 years ago. “Most members drive their Model Ts all the way down,

The Ford Model T, which was built from 1909-1927, was regarded as the first affordable automobile, opening travel to the middle class. In the 1920s more than half of the cars in the world were
Model T Fords. In 1999, the Model T was named the most influential car of the 20th century. The rally “cruise day” on Saturday will commence with the cars parked at Beaurepairs yard on Rutherford St Nelson from 9-10am.
The public is welcome to come and look at the cars during this time, and to see them leave on their cruise around the city from 10am. The cruise will end at the Nelson Vintage Car Club, Lower Queen Street Richmond (Speedway grounds) where the cars will do driving tests and be on display from 1-3pm. The “long run day” on Sunday begins at the vintage car club, with cars leaving at 9am for a 110-115km run through Mahana, Lower Moutere and Ngatimoti, before stopping for lunch at the Motueka Aero Club. The afternoon run will take the cars through Tasman, Mapua and back to Richmond, where the rally winds up that evening with a dinner. The route will be adjusted as needed based on restricted access around fire zones.

There are fines up to $500 for impeding into these zones, worse, there are possible disastrous consequences. As the ships moving within Port Nelson have increased in size, so has the danger to the recreational boaties. This year the harbour master’s staff will be out in force and there will be no excuse for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. It is the skipper’s responsibility to know the rules and he will be held accountable. If a paddleboarder or kayaker is within the area of the cut, the “exclusion zone”, he / she will be held accountable. The enforcement officers on the pilot boat that accompanies the ship are entitled to get the details of the transgressor.

Kay-Wright made the semi final of the FIFA World Cup with the New Zealand under-17 side and Callan Elliot signing a professional contract with the Wellington Phoenix. But outside of those well-known highlights, hundreds of boys and girls, men and women played dozens of games in the region’s most popular participation team sport. And this year looks to be just as busy, as the clubs prepare for another season of winter football.

FC Nelson was formed in 2011 as a result of the merger of the Nelson City, Nelson Metro, Nelson United and Tahuna Juniors football clubs. Each of these
football clubs had their own proud histories and the decision to merge these was not taken lightly, but it was felt that by amalgamating into what has become FC Nelson, it would be able to offer ongoing opportunities to all its members that may not be possible while continuing to operate as smaller independent units. For the 2011 season the club had over 900 members spread across junior, youth, and men’s and women’s teams which made them the largest football club in the Nelson Marlborough region. In 2018, there were 24 junior teams and nine senior teams competing in the winter leagues across Nelson Bays. FC Nelson’s long term aim is make football accessible and enjoyable at all levels of the game and to give players of all ages and coaches the chance to develop to whatever level they aspire to. In 2014, seven youth-aged players from Richmond
were selected in the Nelson Marlborough Falcons Youth National League squad, who then went onto win the title. The biggest bowls tournament to hit Nelson is once again rolling into town this weekend. The Nelson Bowling Club Speight’s Premier Fours will see some of the country’s top bowlers battle it out for the title, as well as the $10,000 first prize money that comes with it – being the biggest fours winner's cheque in New Zealand. Organiser Richard Collett says the tournament was such a success last year they had to run it again. The event brings top quality bowlers to the region but also gives Nelson’s best local talent the opportunity to play in this prestigious event where they can gauge their own abilities against the best. The tournament is the brainchild of Nelson Bowls convenor of selectors John Caldwell and will be an annual fixture where the players are asked to play in the event by invitation only.

World’s best sail into Nelson Locally Owned and Operated

For the very first time this week, Tasman waters will host some of the best sailors in the world as part of the Flying Dutchman World Championships. Hosted by the Nelson Yacht Club, the regatta got underway on Saturday with crews from 10 nations contesting nine races between February 16-21. This is the first time a World Championship in any class had been held in Nelson. The championship was preceded by the 2018/19 New Zealand Open National Championships, with many overseas entries taking the opportunity to accustom themselves to the Tasman Bay conditions. The competition sailing area is moved 1 -1.5nm outside of the cut to the west to mitigate the
effects of tidal flow from both the Cut and the Waimea estuary to the south. A farewell prize-giving will be held on Thursday February 21 upstairs at the Nelson Yacht Club. The results are close at the top of the leader board with Hun 70, crewed by Szabolcs Majthenyi and András Domokos, leading on seven points with GER 88, crewed by Kay-Uwe Lüdtke and Kai Schäfers, second on 11 and NED 26, crewed by Enno Kramer and Ard Geelkerken, in third on 14. Organisers say day one started in a perfect 10 knots breeze which suddenly built to 20 knots just after the start. “This caught many sailors by surprise with rapid adjustments required and a number of boats capsizing.”
The race was won by AUS 7 followed by HUN 70 with GER 98 third. Due to the stronger winds the race offer postponed the second race to day two. Three races were sailed on day two in perfect conditions. The breeze started at around 10 knots slowly building to around 16 later in the day. “Larger waves gave the boats good surfing conditions on the downwind legs, HUN 70 finishing the day with placings of first, first and second to lead overall.” Day three provided similar conditions to day two but with smaller waves. The top three boats swapped placings in the races with HUN 70 finishing first and second, GER 88 finishing second and first and NED 26 finishing both races in third.

New Zealand indoor cricket legend Jon Routhan is still searching for that elusive World Cup title. After playing in three campaigns where the Kiwis came agonizingly close to dethroning the almighty Australians, Jon’s next shot will come in 2020 as a coach. The Nelson College for Girls director of sport was named alongside former teammate Leigh Kelly to lead the side in their quest for an inaugural title. Jon, who represented New Zealand from 2004-2017, brings a wealth of experience to the helm. He is confident they have assembled a quality core of players capable of ending the Australian dynasty which dates back to the mid-nineties. The Aussies have won 19 consecutive World Cups since the tournament’s inception in 1995. “I have been through some heartbreak.” He says he is excited about the prospect of a shot at revenge with a new team. “Leigh and I had talked about it before, threw our names in the hat and were lucky enough to be selected.” However, there is a lot of cricket to be played between now and the global competition in Sydney next year.

This year sees the introduction of the Asia/Pacific Cup which will take place in Singapore in April. Jon says the game has caught on quickly in Asia and countries such as India and Sri Lanka have already proven themselves as more than competitive against the world champions. “It will be a good opportunity to gauge where we are at and see the new players take the court.” He says they drew a line in the sand when selecting their 25 players. “They had to have been playing provincial cricket which meant there were a few guys that were unavailable through outdoor commitments.” The squad is riddled with talent including young guys the
Gardner brothers, Mitchell and Braden. “They have been playing really well for Canterbury at provincial level and I’m looking forward to seeing how they go,” he says. Jon also cites Taine Jolley and Corey Perrett, who both played for New Zealand at Under-22 level, as exciting young prospects. “We want to play positive and put a lot of emphasis on what we do with the ball.” Jon has previously coached the NZ colts’ side as well as the Southern indoor team, but this will be his highest honour to date. “It’s exciting, they are young, raw and can do some really funky things with the ball.”

Speedway’s 2018 competitor of the year, Jeremy Webb, has again claimed a clean sweep of titles at the weekend. Jeremy won the South Island title in December, the New Zealand title in mid-February and, a week later, the GP trophy is also now back in the cabinet after another victory at Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway. The former Waimea College student continues to dominate the T.Q class. Webb was the favourite to grab the triple crown of titles, with his performances over the past few seasons making him almost untouchable in any championship he turns up to. The Ryan Stone Memorial and CTRA NZ titles are two more trophies stacked away in the cabinet this season. The only drawback was cooking the Midget engine early in his Northern campaign and using a borrowed car to finish the series and NZ titles.
