The New Zealand Transport Association has finally coned off a blackspot on Rocks Rd, which has caused at least three serious

cyclist accidents, but it did not come quick enough for one local family. Two weeks ago, Melanie Chambers and her family were biking into town from Richmond. As they came around Rocks Rd, Melanie’s 14-year-old daughter

became nervous about how close the cars were and did not want to go through a puddle. It has since been revealed that the puddle is home to slippery sludge and silt which has caused three serious accidents – resulting in broken bones and severe grazes.

Some of the victims feared that people could die if they slipped into oncoming traffic. “As soon as she hit the puddle her mountain bike slipped out from underneath her and she went flying like superwoman,” Melanie says. “She suffered a huge graze

along her elbow and arms, hips and legs were also grazed with large bruises.” She says it was “a terrifying experience” for her and her family. “It makes me extremely angry to

More families in Nelson are sending their children to their local primary school, while recently enforced school zones are starting to show their impact. Primary schools started back last week, with all city area schools - including Auckland Point, Central, Victory and Hampden Street – reporting healthy numbers for the year. Both Central and Hampden Street Schools have introduced enrolment schemes in the past two years to control burgeoning rolls. Nelson Central School principal Pip Wells says zoning has helped to control numbers so much so that without it, they would have been “inundated”.

“We are still bursting at the seams and have welcomed more than 40 new students this year the bulk being new entrants,” she says. They have started the year with 464 students – up on 435 last year and will soon be adding two new classroom spaces to accommodate the growth. “There has been a huge strain on our resources and classes, but we’re in great heart - the teachers and students are buzzing and we are also on the hunt for a senior syndicate leader.” Don McLean, Hampden Street School principal, also says zoning has helped to take the pressure off. “Our roll is down on last year it is a significant drop due to the impact of our enrolment scheme and also 100 year six students going out,” he says.

“The end result is we are starting with one less classroom this year, and teacher. “This isn’t a bad thing as we function best with around 450 students and we see the roll stabilising over the next couple of years around the 450 mark.” Meanwhile, Auckland Point and Victory Primary Schools, which are not zoned, have received a healthy dose of new students for 2018 as well as some new teachers. Victory Primary School’s roll is up 30 students from this time last year, at 380 students. Auckland Point School also has a starting roll this year of 95 students up, which is up from 70 about six years ago. “We have a steadily growing roll and are planning for continued growth this year,” says principal Sonya Hockley.

Sonya believes that Auckland Point’s roll growth is largely due to more families in the central Nelson area choosing to send their children to their local school. “I do think that as some schools are not an option ... this further promotes the ‘local kids, local school’ option,” says Sonya. However, she still says the impact of the zoning in other schools has been small. “Over the last year the majority of our new students and whanau are living in what would be our natural catchment area. “When I talk with our new families they say they have actively chosen to come here.” Sonya says she encourages local families to go to their local school as it creates a community that is more representive of those that live around it.

Heavy rain causes flooding (again)

The day saw about three times February’s usual rainfall arrive in one day. The onslaught overwhelmed the city’s systems, including bursting water pipe on Tahunanui Drive which sent thousands of litres of water across the road. There were also slips on State Highway 60 at Spooners, and on the highway at Mapua, where three lanes were blocked. A car crashed on Whakatu Drive just after 2pm, which was of several accidents in Nelson on Sunday including a car that crashed into with a parked car on St Vincent St in the city centre just after 4pm. Heavy rain is forecast to return on Sunday.

Fast food under fire

Nelson Burger King appears to have cleaned up its act after a public backlash against its service and conditions. However, several other local fast food restaurants have also been put under pressure on social me-

dia. In January, the Nelson Weekly ran a story on the fast food restaurant after customers and an anonymous employee complained about poor service and standards. Since the article ran, the franchise has committed to speaking with dissatisfied customers, hir-

Every winter Sadie Harris used go to bed at 4.30pm because her Tahunanui home became too cold for comfort. Her daughter didn’t like the idea of going to sleep with the fire on, so it was only started on the weekends. But Sadie’s asthma would soon play up. As soon as she stepped outside it would start. “I would have to stay inside until the sun came out,” Sadie says. So several weeks ago, Sadie’s doctor, Jo Knight, referred her to Warmer Healthier Homes,

an organisation dedicated to helping insulate homes for those in need. “She has got some respiratory issues, it’s well proven that these sorts of interventions make a big difference in people’s lives,” Jo says. The Warmer Healthier Homes (WHH) project began in Nelson region four years ago with a partnership between Rata Foundation, the Nelson Tasman Housing Trust, Nelson Marlborough DHB, and Nelson City Council, with further funding from the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA). “We want to get awareness

out there,” says Jo. “If you are uninsulated bring it to your doctor’s attention. Prevention is much better than the cure in these scenarios.” WHH has now insulated over 700 properties throughout the top the South Island. Chair of Warmer Healthier Homes, Bill Dahlberg, says the programme means that people can access subsidised insulation, through Absolute Energy, to ensure their home is warmer during winter. Sadie’s original quote was about $1800 but with the subsidy it came down to $200. “It makes a big difference,” says Bill.

With a passion for hockey and having recently achieved a Bachelor in sport and recreation, Tamara Dudley is feeling confident about her new position as regional development manager for Hockey Nelson. Tamara joined the team in late January, taking over the role from Craig Brett who had served the organisation for 14 years. Starting the job just weeks before Hockey Nelson’s senior and junior programs kick-off has been “chaotic” but Tamara is thrilled to be working in a sport she loves and in a region that offers such a great lifestyle. “I was in the Navy for 14 years and then I decided to go to AUT where I’ve recently finished a Bachelor in Sport and Recreation, majoring in coaching and management,” says Tamara. “Hockey is definitely something I wanted to be involved in, I’ve been playing for the last 30 odd years.” Tamara was born in Blenheim but has spent most of her life in the Auckland area. She’s played representative hockey for North Harbour, been in the New Zealand Maori women’s team for the last four years and has just been named in the New Zealand

Women’s 35+ squad, who will be competing at the Masters World Cup later in the year. As regional development manager, Tamara oversees three key areas, community hockey, hockey in school’s and representative teams. “Further on this year, I can probably implement some changes, but I think this term especially it’s more observation and seeing how Hockey Nelson runs,” says Tamara. “We’ve got some new development programs coming up aimed at our representative players, junior programs for the primary and intermediate children, the senior summer competition and a college competition as well.” Brand new for 2018, Hockey Nelson is also going to operate a satellite program in Motueka, allowing for local competition instead of players having to travel all the way to the Saxton complex. Hockey Nelson operations manager Fabian Amor says Tamara’s personality was a big driver behind her appointment, as well as her hockey background. “The way she can interact with schools, young kids and young coaches is very important. We are excited about how Tamara’s role will impact the community and give us the opportunity to grow the sport within the region.”

Budding scientist Jaye Barclay has had a summer to remember. The 20-year-old was the recipient of the Cawthron Institute’s inaugural Te Pītau Whakarei Karahipi scholarship and has spent the last 10 weeks immersed in life as a real scientist. The scholarship aims to support Māori research capability and is offered in partnership with Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga, with funding from private donors. It allows Māori undergraduate students to benefit from participating in cutting-edge research and to build their professional network. Wellington-born Jaye says it has been “massive honour” to be the first person to receive the scholarship. “I didn’t think I would get it, because I know that quite a few people applied. Everyone has been really cool and welcoming – it’s very exciting to be here.” Jaye is about to head into her third year at Victoria Univer-

While at Cawthron, she has been mentored by scientist Jim Sinner, working on a research project that focuses on developing a framework for achieving and maintaining social license. “It’s quite different from my usual study but the scholarship has been such an awesome opportunity,” she says. Cawthron Foundation manager Elizabeth Bean says they were “delighted” with the num-

ber and calibre of applicants for their 2017 scholarships. There are three scholarships in total, and also include the Sir Theodore Rigg and Kathleen Curtis (Lady Rigg) Scholarships as well as Te Pītau Whakarei Karahipi. “Those appointed are very high academic achievers, have contributed to community activities, and are strong advocates for the environment and science-led research,” she says. “With such high calibre scholars at Cawthron this summer, the future bodes well for New Zealand science.”

New, old, and everything in between was out on display at the Nelson Motor Show over the weekend. More than 200 cars were parked up at the Tahuna Beach Kiwi Holiday Park & Motel for the annual show with organiser Steve Steele saying he had never seen such variety at the show. “Everything was welcome and there was a 100year difference between the youngest and oldest on site, which was really cool.” Among all the petrol heads was Stoke’s Anton Roach who brought his 1992 Nissan R32 GTR as a standard car over two years ago. But parked up at the motor show, it had almost every upgrade possible. “It’s definitely one of the more powerful cars going around on the street,” says Anton. “I’ve put a lot of time and money into it and sat out in my shed for countless hours until stupid times in the morning just tinkering away on it.” With a fully rebuilt motor, the latest software, and almost 600 horsepower at the wheels, the GTR drew a crowd and already Anton is looking forward to coming back next year. “There is not much around Nelson in the way of car shows like this so its good to get all these cars together." At the other end of the spectrum with his rare, fully restored 1970 Plymouth GTX, was Nelson’s Kerry Martin. “It doesn’t matter the age of it or what it is, it is someone’s pride and joy and I can appreciate all the work, time, and money that goes into them.” “It’s a real testimony to Nelson people that we have such a variety." Kerry says one of the best parts of the motor show is the Friday night Super Cruise car run. In one gigantic line, 364 cars drove from the Speights Ale House through Stoke, out to Richmond, back to Nelson, out to Atawhai and then back through Tahunanui. “I’ve been in every cruise except one and this was the biggest we’ve ever had, it is a great kick start to the weekend.” Kerry imported his lime green Plymouth, aptly number-plated ‘HULLK’, from America late last year and says he’ll be taking it to as many shows as he can. “You don’t buy them to wrap them up in cotton wool and leave in your shed, you buy them to enjoy them, that's what it is all about for me.” The event finished on Sunday at lunchtime, just before the big downpour soaked the region.

Phantom calls on builders

Kate Russell A big show for a little theatre needs some helping hands – building hands, that is. The Nelson Youth Theatre Company is bringing The Phantom of the Opera to Nelson for the first time ever this April – and while they’ve got the acting and singing sorted, they need a help with some other “staging challenges”. “We are calling on any current or retired builders to give us a hand on a couple of projects we need to complete for the production,” says the show’s director Richard Carruthers. This includes building two ‘portable’ royal boxes into the theatre auditorium on either side of the stage, devise means for candles to float out of a mist in the phantom’s lair, a boat to flow seamlessly across the stage, and numerous other magical devices that are outside their “normal range of staging expertise”. Richard says that other sets that have been used around the country are too big to fit into the Theatre Royal. “It’s the first time the show has ever been performed here, and all those magical moments that everyone’s seen in the big Broadway or West End versions of the show have to somehow be transposed into our little theatre. “We’d love to hear from anyone who can volunteer their time for couple of weekends – maybe two or three Saturdays. They’ll have the thrill of being able to say ‘we built that’, and free tickets to the show, of course.” The classic Andrew Lloyd Webber musical tells the story of a masked figure who lurks beneath the catacombs of the Paris Opera House. The Phantom of the Opera is on at the Theatre Royal from 8-21 April with tickets from the theatre or TicketDirect. To volunteer your building services, email Richard at nelsonytc@gmail.com

Nelson Matters Job stats out this week show how well Nelson and New Zealand are doing. We have record numbers of people in employment, growing businesses and incomes increasing at twice the rate of inflation. We now have 47,000 jobs in Nelson and Tasman. That’s 10,000 more than a decade ago. The average income is up from $40,000 to $50,000 a year. The Nelson unemployment rate when National left office in October was just 2.2%, a number to remember as the new Government’s policies take effect. Unemployment was 10% in Nel-

son when I first became an MP. We had over 6,000 people in local dole queues. These people were desperate for a job. The resulting poverty was awful. Nelson’s unemployment is the lowest in New Zealand but our nationwide figures are also impressive. Job growth has averaged 10,000 per month for the last two years. That’s an additional 240,000 jobs. We have the third highest employment rate in the developed world. NZ’s unemployment rate of 4.5% compares to Australia at 5.5%, France at 9.8%, Spain at 17% and Greece at 21%. It is no won-

der so many people are wanting to come here and far fewer New Zealanders are leaving. My worry is the policy changes the new Government is making will slow job growth and take away the opportunity for people to get ahead. It is proposing to end the starting out wage available for the first six months of 16 and 17 year olds employment that enables them to get onto the first rung of the jobs ladder. They want to abolish the 90 days trial period for businesses with over 20 staff. They propose reintroducing 1970’s style industry wide awards that caused in-

The local singer has created a show fusing Sinatra’s songs and life in an effort to tell the story of how a skinny kid from Hoboken, New Jersey, went on to conquer the musical world. “But, as with all heroes, you often don’t want to talk about their faults,” Mike says. “Sinatra had a lot of those too, so the show also has some dark undertones.” Mike, originally from the United States, has been performing and teaching in Nelson for several years, but says his love for Sinatra’s work came when he was growing up. “Just what he brings to music and how he interprets it with his legendary phrasing. The feeling you get from listening to his songs is quite different.” What better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day? Mike performs the show on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday at Nelson Musical Theatre. He has even a special Valentine’s deal for two tickets along with two drinks and chocolates. Mike says he wanted to take songs from different eras of Sinatra’s life. “The issue with putting this show together about someone with such a wealth of music and information is where to start. That was a challenge.” He would look at each song and how that correlated to parts of Sinatra’s life. “I tried to link it together as best I could, but then stand back and see how it fitted in with the overall flow of the show. Soroptimist fashion show needs designers Jessie Johnston The Soroptimist Club of Waimea is organising the inaugural Artful Creations event and they’re looking for creative people in the community to get involved. The creative design competition has four sections, challenging people to create an outfit that will then be modelled by dancers from Fargher Academy. Those entering Anything Goes will be required to work with all recycled items, Fabulous Fibres includes wools, cottons, flax and string, etc. Those entering Glam It Up will be creating glamorous evening fashion and for the school’s section the theme is Avant Garde. “We’re going to give Artful Creations our best shot,” says Soroptimist member and event organiser Heather Thomson. “If we can just do one big event each year, then we can support lots of causes in the community. We’ll also be donating some of the proceeds to Fargher Academy’s travel fund.” Entries are now open for the competition and will close on March 31, with all garments to be submitted for judging in August. The winner of each section will receive $500 and all entries will receive one complimentary ticket to the show. “It’s a fun thing to get involved in, so, if people are creative, just give it a go,” says Heather. “We want to encourage the young ones as well.” Those looking to enter into the competition can email siwaimea@siswp.org to receive a registration form. bluegrass to the event. “Around four years ago we brought musicians in from overseas and the ticket price went up to fifty dollars, but the festival-goers told us they were happy with local bands, so that way, the ticket price has remained reasonable, although we have raised it a little this year. It’s $20 if you pre-buy a ticket or $25 if you buy it on the day.” These prices include a free wine or beer glass, “so really, the price hasn’t gone up, you basically get the glass for nothing now.” Around 2 to 3 thousand people turn out each year for the Nelson Wine and Food Festival, “with most Nelsonians deciding whether to come on the day, or sometimes the day before, depending on how the weather looks.” Sun umbrellas will be available to loan from the Nelson Cancer Society by paying a bond, which is refunded upon their return. There will also be large marquees erected by two of the event’s major sponsors— called the Gold Pine Shelter Shed and Fertiliser NZ Shade House, with sails so people can take refuge from the sun. Meanwhile “Serious Straws will be there selling hats, and Knapps Lawyers will wander around all day providing cold thirst quenching water.” If you are thinking of going to the Nelson Wine and Food Festival, people are encouraged to hop on their Facebook page to enter a competition to win tickets for two people to the event. “They will be picked up by a classic car and delivered to the Middle Earth Winery in style, which could be a Rolls Royce, a Jaguar or maybe an MG,” says Peter. also the NZ Classic and Antique Boat Show which takes place at Lake Rotoiti a couple of weeks later. “People can have a beer or a wine and then go over and talk cars, boats and steam engines,” says Peter. All age groups can enjoy the event, including children, with a range of activities including a bouncy castle and Zorb balls to ride. Meanwhile teenagers from Nayland College will be there conducting an economics survey and interviewing festival-goers “which gives a good breakdown of attendance at the event and why people come, which is great for future planning.” The general public are reminded they can’t bring their own alcohol or lunch to the event, ‘because it’s not fair on the stallholders,’ says Pe-

ter. There will be around ten local wineries and five breweries present, as well as cider and non-alcoholic drinks available. The rest of the stalls are made up of food stalls, and high interest stalls such as clothing, jewellery and the Nelson Hospice. “The hospice will be our major beneficiary this year, because they have a major building programme underway, but Richmond Rotary will also donate some of the proceeds to other charities such as local fire brigades, the rescue helicopter, St Johns and local schools.” The Nelson Wine and Food Festival 2018 will be held on Bryant Road at the Middle Earth Winery in Brightwater on Sunday 18 February from 11am to 5pm, to raise funds for local charities. ‘Go By Bike’ day: Nelsonians will be swapping petrol for push power this Wednesday as part of the annual ‘Go By Bike’ day. Nelson City Council is hosting a free breakfast for cyclists at 1903 Square by the Cathedral Steps between 7.30 and 9am. Local band The Plinkers will be providing live music and free giveaways will be up for grabs. The council are encouraging everyone to jump on their bikes, make a difference to the environment and to their health, and pop along to the breakfast party on your way to school or work. ‘Strange’ fire in Tahuna: A Tahuna home has escaped severe fire damage in a blaze that fire investigator Craig Piner calls “a little bit strange”. Nelson firefighters were called to a fire in the garage of a Rangiora Tce house at 3.15am yesterday. They arrived to find a car on fire inside the garage. The attached garage sat beneath the home and flames from the car were reaching the garage roof and were starting to spread

It is believed the fire was most likely due to an electrical fault behind the dashboard in the car. Irrigation plan for consideration: Waimea Irrigators Limited (WIL) has publicly released a Product Disclosure Statement for the Offer of Water Shares, which is available for irrigators on the Waimea Plains to consider. The Product Disclosure Statement is an offer to buy water shares in WIL. Shareholders can enter into agreements that allow them to apply under the Tasman Resource Management Plan (TRMP) to affiliate an existing ground water or surface water permit for water provided by the Dam, once it’s built. Landowners will be able to apply for shares in WIL even if they don’t have an operative

water permit, which would enable potential future water users to buy into the scheme. WIL Project Manager Natasha Berkett says the offer is the culmination of effort over the last 17 years by dedicated farmers and orchardists who have been working hard to secure a reliable supply of water. Heritage festival revamped: Nelson’s much-loved Heritage Week has been rebranded as the Nelson Heritage Festival. The Festival will run from the 9 to 22 April. The revamped event will revolve around community involvement. In the new format, council is offering support to individuals and community groups to run their own events to celebrate and highlight Nelson’s heritage. Events will be held at councilowned heritage facilities, scheduled heritage homes, art galleries, museums, heritage precincts and more, with many events being privately run with support from council. While event ideas are still rolling in, there’s already an exciting programme of events planned.

Every few weeks we sit down with someone interesting, doing something interesting, at either the Vic or Burger Culture. We call it 'Burgers, Beer and Banter.' This week we speak with Pete Rainey who is helping organise the upcoming Opera in the Park at Saxton Oval. On February 24, it will showcase world-class musicians alongside world-renowned singers in a community extravaganza. Q: How long have you been doing Opera in the Park now? A: It’s almost my 20th year. It hasn’t run every year but when I look back at all the shows we have done, god almighty, it’s a lot of people who have performed. We have had such great crowds over the years. Q: What is Opera in the Park all about? A:First of all, some people might be put off by the word ‘opera’ and think it’s not for them, but really it’s a variety show. We have Simon O’Neill, Anna Leese and Bic Runga all singing – they will be performing songs and music anyone can enjoy. There are not many opportunities to enjoy

Photo: Charles Anderson. this sort of calibre of singer and musicians in Nelson so it’s a real treat. If we get the opportunity to hear these great singers we need to take it. Q: How many people are you expecting? A: We are at Saxton Oval this year which is a great venue. I think 6000 to 8000 people, but

I’m picking more if it’s a fine night. A few years ago at Tahunanui we had 15,000 people, but that event was free. This is a little more but still really good value for what you get. Q: What can people expect? A: This year we are really focussing on the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra which has only

come here once before. So, we have some straight orchestral numbers in the programme. That is really rare to see them at full potential. They are absolutely dedicated and it shows. To hear this number of professional musicians playing at the peak of their abilities is something special. They'll be dipping into some great movie themes as well as some more traditional numbers.

the eels, through to people in their 70s and 80s who love going on the Skywire. As well as being a fun family outing, the adventure complex is also a great destination for larger groups. While they recommend bookings for some activities such as horse treks, individuals and smaller groups can simply pop out to enjoy the wide range of activities available. However, larger groups are required to book in advance. Quad-biking, which is one of their most popular past-times, requires that you are aged 16 years or over in order to self-drive. There’s also the option for adults to take children for rides on the back of passenger bikes. When it comes to Happy Valley’s horse treks, Richard says that the experienced staff are able to assess people’s ability as to which horse would be most suitable for them. “There’s treks for absolute beginners right through to more challenging excursions for seasoned riders.” Despite the huge range of activities that are possible at Happy Valley Adventures, their broader programme includes support for some major events such as the Wairua Warrior, which is happening on April 7. Happy Valley Adventures is proud to be the venue for this incredibly popular obstacle racing event. In the long term, Richard and Elina would like to do a full rebrand of the business and take everything to a higher level. “A lot of that has to do with riparian plantings, signage and presentation. All of the rides are really, really good; it just needs some fresh energy,” says Richard. “The vision is to create a truly world class adventure park with a future focus on mountain biking, while also expanding on some of the existing activities, but eventually moving into

new areas as well.” Richard says that they want it to be the destination of choice for those visiting and living in Nelson. When people are looking for things to do, they won’t have to look very far, they can pop over to Cable Bay knowing there will be somewhere with a huge range of activities they can enjoy. Although the existing café is working well, Richard and Elina hope to develop it further, putting in woodfire pizza ovens and a beer garden, creating a lovely outdoor setting where people can come and relax and enjoy good food and drink. “We really want to see it grow and establish in the next cou-

ple of years,” says Richard. “We envisage having another function centre up at the Skywire one day, and hope that by next summer we will be able to run a second café.” The proximity of Happy Valley Adventures – a two minute detour off the main road between Nelson and Picton, makes it a fantastic spot to break up your journey if you are travelling in either direction. From Havelock, visitors may want to combine a visit to Happy Valley with a Marlborough Travel half-day Greenshell Mussel Cruise, a wine and food experience in the stunning Malborough Sounds. Maggie wins Coast to Coast section Judene Edgar Sixteen-year-old Waimea College student Maggie McLean secured her place as one of the nation’s rising multi-sport athletes after winning the secondary school section of the iconic twoday Coast to Coast event last weekend. One of the world’s longest running multi-sports events, the Coast to Coast has become almost a rite of passage for multi-sport athletes from around the world with over 18,000 people having completed the event since it was founded in 1983. Held every February, the six-stage course starts at Kumara Beach south of Greymouth, and traverses the width of the South Island, crossing the main divide and finishing at New Brighton Pier in Christchurch. The 243km course wasn’t entirely new for Maggie who had raced the kayak stage in last year’s event as part of a three-person team from Waimea College alongside cyclist Daniel Reid and runner Maddie Mitchell.

“I’ve been adventure racing since Year 9 and have done the Junior Get2Go Challenge twice as a team and our team came second in the Hillary Challenge last year, but this was my first proper individual multi-sport event,” she says. “I didn’t start training until quite late and I hadn’t done any road biking before, but I had a goal based on last year’s times.” Setting her sights on a top ten finish based on last year’s times, while this year’s times were faster, she was happy that her time was faster than anticipated. Finishing

with a time of 15 hours, 55 minutes and 29 seconds, Maggie came first in the secondary school girls’ category and 17th overall in the women’s open twoday section. “I’m really happy with my time. Based on last year’s times I would have come eighth,” she says. Spurred on by her “really awesome support crew” and family, Maggie crossed the finish line with a smile. And while many competitors might

be tempted to take a day off to recover, not only did Maggie turn up at school on Monday, but she’s already preparing for a six-hour adventure race in Reefton this

Club champion Alicia MacLauchlan was the best, coming home in 9th, with Dylan Stone-Cuthbert, Darkie Armstrong, Jayden Corkill, Morgan Frost and Luke Dilworth all completing the 30 lap feature. There were 10 qualifying races on the first night with 9 different winners amongst the 45 drivers competing. Nine was also the number of rollovers during the night with local George Crosbie going over twice and Christchurch's Daniel Jenkins flying to the top of the safety fence. Local Shane Robertson won the first heat of the night, but lost his chain in the second. Other results: Youth Ministocks best pair’s winners were Caleb Jessop and Hadley Boyce, while Alex Hill is the closed club Super Stock champion after surviving some last race battles.

SporTS FOOTBALL: Tasman United's hopes of a top four finish took a heavy blow in Auckland on Sunday as it lost 3-0 to Eastern Suburbs in the ISPS Handa Premiership. Tasman are still fifth on the table but are now six points behind fourth-placed Canterbury United, which also has a game in hand. Tasman are set to host tabletoppers Auckland City this Saturday at Saxton Field, kick off is at 2pm. CRICKET: A man-of-thematch performance by Wanderers' Evan Jones wasn't enough to secure a win for his team as it failed to chase down Stoke/Nayland for the second week in a row. Batting first, Stoke/Nayland put on 244 in its allotted 50 overs. Pick of the Wanderers

bowlers was Jones, picking up 3 for 46 off his ten overs. Jones then turned his attention to the batting crease, scoring 82 off just 57 balls. Andrew Drummond (52*) was the next best for Wanderers but a lack of a tail saw the chase peter out at 198 in the 41st over. Yvonne West won the 65-99 women's section of the half marathon, with a time of 1:52:28. Kathryn Cocker won the marathon walk in a time of 5 hours, 29 minutes and 13 seconds. SEA SWIM: They say every cloud has a silver lining. It didn't seem that way when the fierce storm that hit Nelson severely damaged buildings along Wakefield Quay, including the yacht club. Due to that damage, last Thursday's Port Nelson sea swim was shifted to Tahunanui Beach - and what a silver lining that was. Swimmers revelled in the warm water and calm conditions with Luke Kelly, riding high on his national series win in Wellington, cruising to victory in the 1200m race around the fixed buoys in front of the beach.
