The number of million dollar homes sold in Nelson has jumped more than 800 per cent in the past three years, as Nelson house prices rise faster than anywhere else in the country.

In 2013 there were three homes sold in Nelson worth $1 million or more, so far this year there have been 28, according to information released to Nelson Weekly by REINZ.

“The stock is the problem, there’s roughly a third less stock on the market and that throws the sale prices out and the average time of sale out, and it doesn’t take long before you start seeing some silly prices,” he says. “You add in the number of buyers from Auckland and Christchurch who are coming here, that puts pressure on sale prices as well.” In 2014 there were 12 sevenfigure homes sold, in 2015 that dropped to 11 before this year’s record 28, with December sales still to be included. Anthony says that houses over $1 million usually take longer to sell, but not recently, “which is different from previous years”. “I had one home that was on

the market for $1.1 million and sold before the first open home. That was pretty rare for a property at that price to go so quickly.” Overall, the sales in Nelson have topped $400 million and, if you include Tasman’s $363 million, the wider region looks set to push the $1billion mark for the first time, with figures from November and December still to be included. Last year, house sales from the final two months of the year in both Nelson and Tasman were more than $150 million. If that trend continues more than $920 million in real estate would have been sold during 2016, not including private sales or land purchases for home builds. That’s up on $820 million in 2015. The average house price has

also increased. QV says Nelson home values have increased by 15.4 per cent year on year and 3.3 per cent over the past three months. The average value in the city is now $489,338. The Tasman District also increased, by 12.2 per cent over the past year and 5.1 per cent over the past three months. The average value in the district is now $487,011. QV Homevalue’s Nelson spokeswoman, Hayley Dabinette, says the Nelson and Tasman housing markets are continuing to see strong levels of activity and demand. “There‘s been a late spring surge of listings coming onto the market in Nelson this month with 229 properties listed, compared with only 175 at the start of the month,” she says.

The Tozzetti-sponsored sweetest float award was given to George in his tinsel covered 1955 Morris Minior and Just Costumes won the Pomeroy’s Connoisseur award. Ian Carter and Caroline O’Connor say they flew in from Wellington specifically for the event. “Nelson always puts on the weather and it’s always a great parade, so we try to pop down for it each year.” While this year’s event was a success, the trust behind it say they are looking to mix things up next year, turning the parade around to bring the floats up Trafalgar St, ending at the steps.

Family loses dog in house fire

Brittany Spencer An Annesbrook family have been left without a home and their pet dog after their house burnt down on Friday night in a fire which the local fire service are saying could have been stopped sooner. The Cawthron Crescent house belonged to a woman and her two daughters who were away from home when the fire began late Friday night. The Nelson command unit and six fire appliances from Stoke, Richmond and Nelson were called out to the fire around 9pm, which is likely to have originated in a bedroom in the back of the corner of the house. As they arrived, the windows blew out and the wind direction took control, spreading the fire rapidly through the house. Next-door-neighbour Sherrie says the smell of smoke was the first thing that alerted them. “We smelt the smoke before anything else and then looked out and you couldn’t see anything in the driveway. I had to move our car but there was so much smoke it was like driving in braille.”

On the other side of the house, neighbour Andrew McHaffie says by the time he and his wife noticed the fire it was well and truly smoking and they couldn’t go near it. “The smoke was pouring out the back corner of the roof and as soon as the window went, that was it.” While the family were unharmed and away from their house when the fire started, neighbours and fire officers say the family’s pet dog was trapped inside the house and did not make it out. “He got as far away from the fire as he could and curled up

in the corner, we didn’t even hear him barking when we were checking that no one was inside, it’s pretty sad, he was a good dog,” says Sherrie. Stoke Station Officer Ryan Hitchcock says the fire could have been stopped sooner. “There were no working fire alarms in the house, they could have alerted neighbours earlier and it might not have been so bad.” Fire investigator Craig Piner says they are still working to identify the cause of the fire but say at this stage it appears to have been accidental.

Nelson is ‘second best’ performing region Nelson has been given “four stars” and ranked only behind Otago as the best performing region in the country by the latest ASB/Main Report Regional Economic Scoreboard. Nelson shot up two places into second, with Tasman in sixth. The report said “what’s not to like?” about Nelson. “Booming tourism is keeping the region’s retailers busy. Nelson is one of the regions benefitting from the twin horticulture and viticulture booms. House prices are similarly buoyant, although we note that sales growth is showing signs of slowing. All up, and as we hinted at last quarter, the region is well-deserving of its extra star.” On Tasman, the report says the region jumped five places in the rankings. “Like its neighbour, Nelson, tourists are keeping Tasman’s retailers busy. Similarly, the wine and fruit boom is boosting incomes in the region. However, the difference between the two regions is housing, where Tasman’s housing market is softer both in terms of sales and price growth.” Otago was ranked as the best performing region as it “continues to outperform in construction and cashes-in on booming tourism”.

TOY RUN: Armed with the club’s mascot, Horatio the Hog, Nelson riders Raewyn Brown and Alan Dickens joined over 200 others on the road for the annual Ulysses Toy Run on Saturday. Travelling up Queen St, through Stoke and then down Trafalgar St to Trafalgar Centre, club coordinator Jenny Magee says they turned a lot of heads, inspired a lot of smiles and had a lot of support, especially down Nelson’s main street. Lewis Stanton has been released on bail and is back on Trafalgar St, standing by the punch he threw at a protestor a fortnight ago. Stanton, also known as Hone Ma Heke, was charged with two counts of assault following a peaceful protest against his stand turned violent on Nelson’s main street on November 20. Offered bail on the condition he kept out of the central business district, Stanton rejected it and appealed to the High Court who said the CBD restriction could not be justified under the Bill of Rights Act. He was then released from jail and is back on Trafalgar St, taking up his usual spot in front of Farmers. “Basically, today [Saturday] is my first day back on the job, most people get three weeks annual leave and I feel like I’ve been cheated because I only got one,” he jokes. “But I’m still here and I’m going to continue my protest and get the truth out, I’ve had a lot of people welcome me back

water balloons down on protestors and civilians, he says he’s not sure who they were. “I don’t know for sure whether they were on my side or whether it was just someone just having fun.” Stanton is due to appear in the Nelson District Court today.

Falling debris at Civic House only a ‘cosmetic issue’ Government workers were evacuated from level five of Civic House on Thursday after reports of small debris falling from the ceiling, which is likely to have been caused by the Kaikoura earthquake. Nikki Harrison, group manager of corporate services at Nelson City Council, says a “cosmetic issue”, not related to structural issues, was found in a room occupied by IRD on level five of the building. “Council and contractors assessed the ceiling space between level five and six, and discovered a glass panel in the exterior wall within the ceiling space had shattered,” she says. “This meant debris was loose in the ceiling space and some of the lightweight ceiling panels had then lifted in the wind, coming through the broken window.” Nikki says that repairs were completed by the end of Thursday and workers were allowed back in on Friday. Nelson Weekly last week reported that the clock on Civic House had also stopped in the hours after the Kaikoura earthquake, but has since been fixed. Civic House has been assessed by structural engineers and deemed to be structurally sound following the earthquake.

Visit www.nelsonlive.co.nz Nelson tourism spend at $334M: The latest Monthly Regional Tourism Estimates released by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) today show that tourism spend for Nelson is estimated to be $334 million for the year to October 2016, up 16 per cent compared with the year to October 2015. International visitors spent $112 million and domestic tourists spent $222 million, both figures up 16 per cent compared with the year to October 2015. However, when it comes to the monthly expenditure, Peter says, “tourism spend in Nelson for the month of October 2016 is down three per cent compared with the month of October 2015.”

.CO.NZ McLarens stop off in Nelson: Last Tuesday, over 40 million dollars worth of cars drove through Nelson. A convoy of 32 privately-owned McLarens stayed overnight at the Grand Mercure Nelson Monaco during a short stop over in the McLaren Epic New Zealand Tour 2016. The tour is in recognition of New Zealand-born Bruce McLaren and the automotive pedigree he began when he founded McLaren Automotive in 1963. Stoke mother Tia Andrews was filling up her car at the Stoke Mobil when, much to her surprise and her 11-yearold son Logan’s excitement, part of the convoy pulled in to fuel up. “It was my boy who spotted them and he almost had heart failure when he did,” says Tia. “I thought there had been a car accident or something the way he was shouting, ‘Mum, mum, look, mum!’”

Michelle Hunt may not have experience in the health sector but her passion for volunteering and personal experience with cancer has made her the perfect choice for manager of Nelson Cancer Society. “Before this position I worked 19 years in the fishing industry, 16 years with Sealord and three years with Talleys, but I also did a lot of volunteer work in the community,” says Michelle. “I was involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters, Wakatu Rotary and currently, Nelson District Parents centre. I love being

involved with the community and volunteering my time, I think everyone can do their little bit and make the world a better place.” Unfortunately, it was the passing of Michelle’s father in May this year, after a short battle with cancer, that caused her to put herself forward for the job. “It made me reflect on life, what I was passionate about, and I realised that I got my drive and my passion from my volunteer work so I decided that I’d love to work for a nonprofit organisation. "Luckily, a few months later I saw this position, so I thought

I’d give it a go,” says Michelle. Starting on Monday last week, Michelle has already embraced the role of manager, having visited the oncology and chemotherapy suites at Nelson Hospital and meeting with those currently battling cancer through the centre's regular support groups. “When we advertised to replace Linda Lucre, who’d had the job for seven years and did it particularly well, we were hoping we could find a person who could step in to fill those big shoes and we certainly did,” says chair of the cancer society board, Alison McAlpine.

Kindies help out Kaikoura Simon Bloomberg

Children at kindergartens around Nelson and Tasman wore blue and had their faces painted the same colour on Friday as part of a fundraiser for kindies and schools affected by the Kaikoura earthquake. Stoke kindergarten mum Phylippa Squires helped organise the Blue Day fund-raiser because she has a close connection with the Kaikoura area. Phylippa's parents live on a farm on the banks of the Hapuka River near Kaikoura and so she was keen to do something to help out the quake victims. Phylippa says the fundraiser gathered quite

a bit of momentum with a number of other kindies, pre-schools and schools around the region taking part. "I emailed about 100 kindies, pre-schools and schools to ask them to help out with Blue Day and they are doing things like coin trails and mufti-days. It's too early to know how much it raised because not everyone did it on Friday, but we raised $107 and I know the Brook Kindergarten raised $75 and Nayland Primary had a coin trail and raised $400." ‘I’m angry and lonely’, Tuesday, November 22: The Brain Injury Associations collection table outside Farmers received a huge amount of positive support as “a far better alternative from Hone” - at least 50 people commented as they passed on Saturday. However, collections were disappointing with just over $1000 raised although many passersby were tourists. Since the Nelson Weekly article, John has been approached by several people offering encouragement. The Brain Injury office also received an email from a sales rep offering to take John out on their run around the beautiful Richmond to Murchison district. John wanted to reiterate that he has had huge support from his mum and dad since the accident. Bands to Rock Victory, Tuesday, November 15: The Victory Community Centre had a successful first rock concert on November 19, and managed to raise $500 for their programmes. Nicola Baré from the centre says everyone who came had a great night and they will definitely think about having another.

There’s a new bookshop in town, and just in time for Christmas. Volume, a boutique independent bookshop, opens its doors this week in the bohemian precinct of Church Street. Co-owner, Stella Chrysostomou says, “We were very pleased to find this spot in one of our favourite streets in Nelson. With Kush and Wilden cafes serving great coffee, East Street and Nicola’s dishing up delicious fare, Equilibrium promoting wellness, and Jens Hansen Jewellers and Hogeys Surf close by, we feel right at home and are looking forward to being part of this relaxed cultural hub.” Volume offers its customers wonderful books, exceptional service and expert advice. Owners Stella Chrysostomou and Thomas Koed are passionate about books and have a wealth of book trade experience between them. Stella began her book selling career in the 1990s at Bennetts in Wellington, and has worked for several award-winning independent bookshops. She’s fully entrenched in the New Zealand book world, as a board member for the Booksellers Association and a representative on the Book Awards Trust. Most recently she project-managed NZ Bookshop Day and was the co-ordinator of this year’s Readers and Writers programme at the Nelson Arts Festival. Thomas is an experienced bookseller of both new and antiquarian books, a published author and has experience in editing, publishing and design. Thomas Koed says, “The special thing about bookselling is that you enable that magical

moment when the book and the reader find each other.” Both booksellers will be familiar to Nelsonians as former Page & Blackmore staff. “Starting our own bookshop felt like a natural progression. We feel that the new wave of successful retailers will be small, specialist and personal,” says Chrysostomou. Part of the international organisation, Toastmasters Nelson Club is one of three in the Nelson area. “The pattern I see is that a Toastmaster moves to a new area and then realises that there’s no Toastmasters club there, so they initiate one,” says Nelson Club’s Kelvin Woodley. “They always start essentially for the same reason - people see a need to improve their ability to speak in public situations, that’s why we all join and that’s why clubs are started in the first place.” With clubs all around the globe, Nelson Club often welcomes overseas visitors while members within the Nelson group have enjoyed the hospitality of international clubs and others around New Zealand. Kelvin has been a member of the Nelson Club for around 10 years and says he attributes his current job as principal of Tapawera School to the skills he has learned through Toastmasters. “I’ve learned things about working with my staff, difficult conversations I have to have, it's improved my ability to respond thoughtfully and appropriately and my levels of anxiety are way less than they used to be,” says Kelvin. “I wanted to get better at randomly talking to people, not necessarily the public

“I was sick of how difficult it was to use the current strippers, and knew sanding was a complete waste of time,” Simon says. “Why sand when the person who made the item, sanded it in the first place? Vertical Limits taken to new heights Kate Russell

Hidden away in an old Vanguard St warehouse is Nelson’s only indoor climbing centre - and it now has a new owner, new opening hours and a new family-friendly attitude. James Scoltock, who took over ownership of Vertical Limits in October, has brought back the facility from “rock bottom”, thanks to the help of a core group of dedicated volunteers. After being under the same ownership for 13 years, the facility struggled under its new brief ownership with a donation-based payment system and a not-sofamily-friendly atmosphere. But all that has changed, and although James has come from a building background, he’s always been a climber, working at overseas summer camps and running outdoor education programmes for youth. Their ‘kids club’, which has been brought back due to popular demand, is “booming”, with more than 30 kids enjoying a revamped kid’s area to cater for all levels and to encourage progression. “The kids club has just exploded

- we had lots of people asking for it,” says James. “We just let them go for it and we move around teaching them skills and pairing them up. Some of the kids here are really good, it’s insane.” Other changes include ripping out the old bouldering cave and creating a new reception area with a well-stocked retail shop. They now also facilitate corporate groups and kids' birthday parties, which are proving to be popular. “We’ve just tried to present it better and we’ve had really good feedback about it being more family-friendly,” says James. “The other things we’ve tried to push hard is pricing, we’re the second cheapest indoor climbing facility in New Zealand and we are now offering memberships, or concessions of 10 which can save you 20 per cent. We’ve got over 100 members now which is really exciting.” And all the changes must be working, as school and group bookings at pouring in, with schools coming from as far as Blenheim to use the 700 square metres of climbing surface, with over 100 climbing routes.

James is also hopeful that they can reinstate the Top of the South secondary schools climbing champs, which was canned earlier this year. “The other cool thing is that we have the Nelson-based NZ under

18 champs train here – it’s the only place they can do it,” he says. “We’re hidden away, but we’re here.” You can find Vertical Limits at 34 Vanguard St, behind the Salvation Army Family Store.

Opening hours are: weekdays from 3pm – 9pm, Saturdays from 12pm – 6pm and Sundays 12pm – 4pm. During the Christmas holidays they will be open weekdays from 12pm – 6pm, and regular hours in the weekend.

Kate Russell Nelson’s Oaklands Farm is broadening its horizons with a brand new product – Aunt Jean’s Dairy. Seventh-generation dairy farmers Julian and Cathy Raine have teamed up with leading glass manufacturer O-I to bring their popular A2 cows’ milk to selected supermarkets. The Raine family have been providing Nelson milk lovers with their farm fresh milk since 2013, at dispensing machines throughout the region, and through the Milk and More home delivery service. They have been milking cows at their Stoke property for more than 80 years, with the farm having a family history dating back to 1844. Now, Julian says they have taken their philosophy with Oaklands Milk, to create a supermarket brand. “Aunt Jean’s Dairy is just another leg as we broaden our horizons, and we’re excited to share it with the rest of New Zealand,” he says. “We firmly believe that milk in glass bottles tastes better, and we know that New Zealanders

Photo: Kate Russell. were very reluctant to make the shift to plastic. “We think the time is right to provide a way for them to drink milk fresh from the farm in a one-litre glass bottle. After all, glass is infinitely recyclable and that has got to be a good thing.” Aunt Jean’s Dairy uses milk from A2 cows that are raised in an open-air environment and they are mainly grass-fed. The milk is bottled on the farm, contains no permeates, and is pasteurised, not homogenised,

allowing kiwis to once again buy milk where the cream rises to the top. “We use the least amount of processing that we can, so Aunt Jean’s Dairy is milk like it used to taste,” says Julian. Initially, Aunt Jean’s Dairy will just be available at Raeward Fresh Richmond, as well as selected Auckland outlets. Julian says, with their milk being already being so well established in Nelson, Auckland will be a good place to test the product out.

The entertainment on a Friday and Saturday night is great, Kick is particularly good and I personally like taking my grandchildren to the club when they visit from Auckland. The club is really child friendly and the kids enjoy dancing to the bands and that’s awesome. It’s not this no-go-zone attitude in regards to children and it’s nice to see the elderly and the children, it works for everyone.

Before doing this Give it A Go Girl challenge, if someone had asked me what a wheel, dancer, warrior and the ocean have in common, I wouldn’t have had the foggiest idea. However, according to the team at Moana SUP, the answer is paddleboard yoga. Paddleboard or SUP yoga is the latest fitness craze, combining the calm serenity and fluidity of yoga postures, or asana, with the added challenge of balancing on the evermoving water. Now, I am probably the worst person to do yoga, I’m a busy body who loves moving, I’m not so good at just being still and I tend to get the giggles at the most inappropriate times. We arrived at Tahunanui Beach and my instructor Kelly Gill-Brydon gave me the run down. It was less than ideal conditions, windy and choppy, but in my book that means fun. Normally SUP yoga is done first thing in the morning when it is really flat, and after a few sec-

After hooking up to the buoy, we started with some sun salutations, focusing on our breathing and opening up our body, the sun was gloriously warm and it was peaceful. Unfortunately, I broke the bliss with giggles as soon as we did the first asana. The pose, threading the needle, consisted of me twisting underneath myself and, while it wasn’t particularly hard, for someone who has not done yoga and is not used to having their bum sticking straight up in the air, I felt comically uncoordinated and slightly self conscious. down, bums up. At this stage it must be said that, as unfamiliar as it was, I loved every minute and had stayed on my board. It probably wasn’t as blissful and quiet as your regular SUP yoga classes, but it was fun and I discovered I had retained some of the gymnast flexibility I had once worked so hard for. After moving through more asanas and getting into the rhythm of things Kelly suggested we head to the shallows and put my balance and flexibility to the ultimate test with some more advanced moves. I failed miserably and fell in the water during almost every attempt at the advanced moves. I did, however, manage a milestone, I somehow convinced my body to cooperate long enough to do my very first freestanding headstand. I have a backflow preventer on the tap used for filling the pool. I don’t have anything climbable outside the pool barrier. I only have pool-related activities in the pool area. (It’s not a good place to plant my vegetable garden or store the kids’ toys).

Father and son ride 158km for 80th birthday Jacob Page

Father and son Ted and Kelvin Woodley found a novel way to celebrate Ted’s 80th birthday on Saturday – by riding the inaugural 158km Abel Tasman Cycle Challenge with each other. Ted and Kelvin, 57, crossed the line together arm-in-arm after a gruelling ride from Saxton Field and out to Ruby Bay, Motueka, Kaiteriteri and back. “It was bloody hard work, I sat on

the back of Kelvin all the way and he did a great job,” Ted says. Ted now lives two hours out of Melbourne but still cycles with a group weekly, but this was a big step up. “I haven’t done a race that long in a long time." A puncture and a broken chain saw Ted come across the line with blood on his forearm and his knee. “The chain

came off three times and we had a puncture – when you fall off it makes you look a little mucky,” Ted says. “I didn’t think I’d be doing the whole thing – I thought I’d be doing part of it but the event is a lot harder than it looks.

“The thing I enjoyed most was finishing." The duo were welcomed by family and friends who had travelled to Nelson for the birthday celebrations. Kelvin says he was proud to do the race with his father and it re-

SporTS Football: Tasman United have just five points through seven matches of football's Stirling Sports Premiership after a 4-2 loss to Eastern Suburbs in Auckland on Sunday. Nelson cricket's MVP Jacob Page Nelson cricketer Saffron Wilson is certainly enjoying her time in the sun. The 14-year-old Nelson College for Girls pupil is currently leading Nelson Cricket’s Most Valuable Player voting after six weeks, beating out several senior Nelson representative players in the process. The MVP rankings combined batting, bowling and fielding attributes to calculate a points score. “I’ve worked on my batting because last year I didn’t play well and I wanted to get my run rate up and get some more speed into my bowling. “I like having a crack against the boys and proving that the

girls can score just as many runs as they can.” Saffron plays for Wakatu's under 15 side as a No 3 batsman and first change bowler. She had limited opportunities at the bowling crease last season due to a back injury, but now that has healed and the benefits are noticeable. Saffron’s first memory of cricket was as a four-year-old watching her dad bat in a game at North Canterbury. Despite being “hooked” on watching cricket on TV from a young age, it wasn’t until she was about 10 that she tried the game for the first time. “I was more of a netball player and a sprinter.” Saffron has only been dismissed twice so far this year,

her best knock has been an unbeaten 94 where she also snared two for 12 from seven overs against a joint Nelson College and Nelson prep team. She says she has aspirations to make the White Ferns one day. This season she would like to get triple figures with the bat but she is also targeting captaining Nelson Under-15s and making the Central Districts Under-15 girls' team. The regional Central Districts tournament will be played in two weeks. Three Nelson girls made the Central Districts Under-15s and two girls made Central Districts Under-21s last year, proving Nelson continues to produce quality women cricketers.

Cameron Jones dominates Bay race Tasman Bay produced ideal ocean surf ski racing conditions for the 2016 KayakHQ King & Queen of the Bay, where local paddlers dominated the top places in the 17km race from Kaiteriteri to Kina Beach on Sunday. Sunday produced a northerly wind gusting to 20-knots creating waves for the paddlers to chase and ride, making for exciting and strategic racing. The seas, though, did add to the level of challenge which stretched some of the field. The young star of Nelson adventure sport Cameron Jones had an exceptional paddle, combing fitness and skill to take line honours and win the race, in 1 hour 25 minutes. Nelson brothers Keightley and Cody Teece topped the podium on their home track at the South Island Stock Car Title at Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway on Saturday night. Snapper season in full swing The snapper season is now in full swing with some fantastic fishing to be had in both Tasman and Golden Bay at the moment. Fish are spread from the deeper depths beyond 30m right into the very shallows, with some monster fish being caught in only a couple of metres of water by those fishermen showing good patience and the ability to remain very quiet. Those fishing in Tasman Bay report that the front of Rabbit Island in eight to 10m of water, and off the Motueka River mouth, have really been fishing well this past week. Golden Bay fisherman report that areas near the Collingwood marine farms and off Patons Rock have been the go-to spots of late. Large schools of kahawai have been feeding right in close near Nelson Harbour, Ruby Bay and Motueka recently, providing great fun and good eating for those getting amongst them.

Recent ant observations in Nelson have revealed the presence of Argentine ants in large numbers in certain areas. With summer on its way, it is time to start planning what methods to use to control argentine ants. In past years there was really only one option and that was to use bait. If not applied correctly, and if neighbours did not treat at the same time, then control was not of the expected levels for the price paid for the product. The last two seasons have seen the use of a now tried-and-proven method of getting long-term control of argentine ants for a reasonable outlay by the householder. The X-IT Ant™ programme relies on the use of at least two, possibly three, different products to achieve ant control. To get the best result from your X-It Ant application your sprayer must have no spray residue from the previous use of insecticides (e.g. Ripcord®Plus) Best results are achieved when a new sprayer is used and only X-IT Ant is used in it. X-It Ant works by being non-repellent to ants so that when they walk over the dried spray residue they pick up the insecticide on their feet and take it back to the nest where the ants preen each other, and thereby pass the insecticide onto other ants, including the queen. Ant colony control is achieved once the queens are dead. You must know where the ants are for successful treatment, so a full inspection of the

property is required, so check all these places: Sleepers, trees, curb and channelling, driveways, paths, gardens, compost heaps, all fences including the wire or boards, rails and posts, pergolas and plants growing on them. The best time to look for ants is in the heat of the day when they are most active.
