A Stoke business owner is blasting a “bizarre” council plan that will see three car parks taken out on the main road to make way
for a new pedestrian crossing, despite there already being two other ones within 80 metres of each other. Squire’s owner Kim Hall was given notice last month that a new “pedestrian refuge crossing” would soon be built from the
Broadgreen Community Centre leading into the main Stoke car park in Strawbridge Square. The plan is part of a “traffic calming” plan for Stoke. However, it would also mean that Kim would lose three car parks which are often used for deliveries and fami-
lies dropping off elderly customers. “Parking is at a premium in Stoke as it is,” she says. “The carpark in Strawbridge Square is full at the best of times and the council is encouraging people at the community centre to come over here.
They just have stuff all car parks over there.” Kim says it looks like council has not given enough thought to the number of car parks the new community centre would need

and will funnel people into an already chocka carpark across the road. “This is all while there are two other perfectly safe pedestrian crossings at the traffic lights within 80 metres of each other. It doesn’t make any sense. It’s bizarre.” She says the first she heard of the plan was when the notice from the Nelson City Council was delivered to her business. Kim says the project manager told her that there had been consultation with the “Stoke Business Owners Association”, when there is none that exists. “I’m the one it is directly affecting,” Kim says. “Why wasn’t I consulted?” Chair of the Stoke redevelopment working party and deputy mayor, Paul Matheson, says the

Kim only took over the Squire’s business 18 months ago.
Paul says, through a number of public meetings and a survey, the community identified priorities for improving the Stoke area. “The refuge was included in answer to feedback asking for improvements for traffic and pe-
ginning
destrian access along and across main roads that divide Stoke – particularly the Songer Street and Main Road Stoke intersection. It is intended to make it safer and easier to get across the main road.” It will be installed in February next year to be ready for the opening of the Greenmeadows Community and Recreation Facility. Paul says he has made regular visits to local businesses over the plans. However, that’s not good enough for Kim who says the crossing idea needs another look. “Why don’t they clean up the side of the park and put angled car parks in there. It would double the car parking there. If you have sports games on at the weekend all you just need to do is look up Songer St. It’s chaos and this plan will not help at all.”

You are not imagining it - summer has come early to Nelson. Tahunanui Beach was packed over the weekend as hundreds flocked to experience the blazing sun and unusually warm water. "It’s definitely hotter, warmer, wickeder, and with more people than we’ve seen,” Moana SUP owner Toby Wild said. Official data seems to back that up. Niwa says ocean temperatures around New Zealand have been, on average, 2C warmer than usual and up to 6C warmer around the west coast. Over the weekend, temperatures in the region hit the mid to high 20 degrees Celsius. Toby can attest to that. He has been back on the beach since September and says the number of people at the beach, paddleboarding, and swimming is the largest he’s seen this early on in the season. Toby says he has seen well over twice as many swimmers as this time last year. "People are swimming without any hesitations. This time last year they were extremely

Youths mugged: Two young people were hospitalised after they were mugged in Montgomery Square car park on Saturday night. The two were part of a group of four that were assaulted by a larger group of youths at around 8.20pm. Police charged a 14-year-old with aggravated robbery but are continuing inquiries to locate the remaining offenders.

Christmas is a time for love and generosity, which is why local woman Debbie Lennox is getting behind the Sending Love NZ movement and encourages others to do the same. Sending Love NZ is a nationwide initiative that aims to put a smile on lonely rest-home residents’ faces this Christmas by giving them a card or letter that’s been written by a member of their community. The concept was established just weeks ago by Auckland resident Hannah Rodgers and has quickly spread throughout the country, thanks to people like Debbie who want to bring a little feel-good Christmas spirit to their community. It was her daughter who put her onto the initiative, which Debbie quickly picked up and implemented in Richmond, placing a collection box at Sinful Coffee, and at The Warehouse in Nelson. “To be alone

Some people are addressing it ‘Dear friend’, or ‘To someone special’ and are drawing pic-
tures, writing poems, telling the recipient a bit about themselves or simply sending a nice Christmas wish.” Thursday, December 14, is the deadline, after which Debbie will collect both boxes and sort the contents, ready to be distributed on Christmas Eve. When she started looking around for a dress for her 13-year-old daughter Saran to wear to her end-of-year dance, Ishna noticed how difficult it might be for other parents to find something their girls might like. “I thought there must be heaps of girls who have parents who either don’t know what their girls like or just can’t afford it.” Ishna managed to get a dress from an op shop for four dollars

You can change a kid’s life going forward and how they feel about things. We can make a big change in a life if we all do something small, it doesn’t have to be massive.”

When Vivian Fox sat down to judge one particular entry at this year’s Nelson Tasman Chamber of Commerce business awards she felt like she had seen a ghost. Staring back at her was Elise Hair Design – the very same business that Vivian took over thirty years earlier as a freshfaced 16-year-old. “I was just flabbergasted, to be honest," she says. "It was so unbelievable to go back to that same business.” The hair salon has kept its name over all those years – perhaps the only such business to have done so. The new owner was Sarah Mussen, who bought the business last year and is setting about breathing new life into it. She has renovated the inside and is slowly working her way freshening it up. The experience led Vivian, now a successful career business woman with myriad ventures in the hospitality industry, on a trip down memory lane. “It was my first ever business,”
she says. “It was wonderful.” Vivian left school when she was 15 and had worked at the salon on Tukuka St. Then the opportunity came up to buy the place and her parents decided to help out.
Vivian Fox hard at work at Elise as a young woman. “The owner told my parents I was more than capable, so away we went,” Vivian says. "I never could have done it without that help." Vivian sold Elise when she was 21 and set about building a successful career. She started other hair salons before mov-
ing into hospitality, including owning the Smokehouse and Apple Shed at Mapua and Saltwater on Wakefield Quay. “I look back and think 'god, that was the beginning of my life’. I’ve self-employed ever since.” Vivian was impressed with what Sarah was trying to bring to Elise. “She’s really thinking outside the square.” Sarah had been a beauty therapist for nine years and thought it was time to have her own space. “Randomly this place came up and it was just a hair salon, and I saw huge potential to have hair and beauty. So I took the leap.” She says it was great to have a connection with Vivian. “It felt really cool for her to see what I have done with the place.” Sarah was leaning towards changing the name of the salon but after seeing its heritage she is leaning towards keeping it. Vivian says she was delighted with Elise. “So many things have come and gone and to think that that place has stayed there with the same name. It’s wonderful.”

Nelson’s Male Room gets a boost

Kate Russell Statistics show that at least one in six men have been sexually abused, and director of The Male Room, Philip Chapman, is slowly making grounds in getting the message out there that it’s more common than we realise. Located on St Vincent St, the free service for men has been gifted money to employ a parttime social worker to help the growing number of men in the region seeking support. "We deal with men as victims of sexual and physical abuse, offenders, victims of family violence, separation, divorce, pornography there’s a list of things we do," says Philip. "But you can imagine me doing all this on only 20 hours a week is a struggle, and I work outside of hours." A cheque for $9500 was presented to Philip last week, which was raised by the ANZ Staff Foundation. The foundation is a staff payroll-giving initiative that distributes half a million dollars every year to New Zealand charities. Philip says the funding will take pressure off an already stretched staff – which consists of only him and a few volunteers. "It's a significant amount of money for us," he says. Philip says a social worker will start in the New Year and will do "a lot" for the guys seeking help. "There are so many areas that we could be assisting men in. They walk in here and say 'I've got nothing to eat, nowhere to live, I've got a bit of a drinking problem, and I don't see my kids, can you help me out' - where do you start?" The Male Room is the Nelson location for the Male Survivors of Sexual Abuse Trust and they also offer accommodation at Franklyn Village for those issued with a Police Safety Order. They have also now joined the Nelson Food Bank, due to an increase in the number of people needing food over the last year. Philip says he first became involved with the building around 30 years ago, when it was a childcare centre. "Then we got involved with men and fathers and changed to The Male Room around seven years ago. The time was right to have a centre for men - there wasn’t much for them in Nelson." Philip says that men are often portrayed as being "at the top of the heap". "But we forget that they're the main victims in prison, their health's far worse than women, and their suicide stats are worse. It staggers me that we see all these negative outcomes for men, but don't actually do anything about it," he says. "Men just don’t figure that much as a needy group, so to get people supporting us means a lot to us." ANZ funding also went to Adult Learning Support Nelson, Supporting Families in Mental Illness Nelson, Victory Community Centre, Whakatu Te Korowai Manaakitanga Trust and Richmond Riding for the Disabled. End of the Hone saga?
Last week the Nelson City Council and Lewis Stanton issued dual apologies for a standoff that has gone on for six years. Charles Anderson looks back at the saga.

Then he started giving rides to children at Tahunanui Beach. “In 2011, the council pushed back,” says lawyer Steven Zindel, who has represented Lewis for all those years. “They wanted to show they were tough. Unfortunately, there was stubbornness on both sides.” The council issued Lewis with a blanket ban, trespassing him from all of the city’s parks and reserves. Lewis went in and out of court, in and out of prison, and in the process racked up more than $100,000 worth of fines. Judge Tony Zohrab later removed the blanket trespass, saying it contravened the Human Rights Act. Then in 2015, Lewis decided to start living outside Farmers on Trafalgar St and along with him came a small band of like-minded rough sleepers. Things turned ugly. Central city retailers staged a "Hone must go" counter-protest in September where Lewis punched the protest leader. A man also poured solvent on Lewis’ face while he slept. So last week’s event was in stark contrast to the escalating conflict. Steven Zindel was impressed. The council apologised for its actions, including the tone of its

Mayor Rachel Reese said the apologies were part of the Christmas spirit. “It’s about coming together and caring for the community with tolerance and forgiveness.” Rachel said she did not want to look back on the saga other than
to acknowledge how council’s interactions had made Lewis feel. “Now it’s a step to moving forward and making sure we have a resolution … I’m happy for the people of Nelson and for our community. Our community is a good one and the face of it needs to be one that is welcoming and tolerant.” As for Lewis, he wasn’t sure what was next. “I plan to stay here for the present until whatever is next on the agenda, but that’s where I am.”

The most exhilarating motorbike event ever seen in Nelson is returning to the summer schedule. The Port Nelson Street Races will be held on January 2, returning after a summer off due to upgrades at Port Nelson, the venue for the races. The street races combine the high speed thrills of motorbikes racing up to 200 mph with an unrivalled spectator viewing, in places just a metre away from the action. Organising committee member Adrian Curtis says the street races are one of the most unique racing events in the country. "It's really good for Nelson, but we live in a PC world and while guys going flat out with curves and concrete things is exciting, street racing is maybe something that we won't see forever. Maybe within our lifetimes it will be gone because people consider it too dangerous for the riders. But it's pretty exciting seeing that kind of speed and seeing it that close." He says the event has a brand-new track this year, with high-speed straights tempered by tight sections that will suit the smaller bikes. "The new track is amazing and it's really going to even up the field between the big bikes and the little bikes. Supermotrads could be the fastest thing there." More than 100 riders are expected to line up for the day's action with speeds of over 200 kmh expected on the long straight. Adrian says around 60 volunteers help make the day run smoothly and the event gets "outstanding" support from Port Nelson. "We are really lucky to have this event and we need to make the most of it while we still have it. Last year when we didn't run it we had a lot of feedback from people who were disappointed, there was so much of that and a lot of people thought it was over."

Your Voice Hope for outdoor fun: It is not just lack of facilities for archery. It's a disgrace that there is now nowhere in Nelson itself for schoolchildren to collect on the weekends for basic athletic training and fun. What's wrong with our council? Why did they allow everything to go out to Stoke? Aren't we supposed to be reducing carbon emissions instead of making parents pile their children into cars to drive out to Saxton field at rush-hour times? This top-of-the-art facility is not needed for basic, inexpensive track and field facilities for children in Nelson itself. We need action now for this summer - not for some 2 to 3 year forward plan. Why isn't the sport and recreation committee doing something useful to address this problem. Our children are being cheated. J G. Oliver Screaming out for staff: This is a tricky one, isn’t it. Hospo is a hard job, not great pay and long hours. But if you’re into
it, it is great fun. You meet amazing people and if you’re in the right team you can really feel part of something special. It's tricky though, because staff should be paid well but I can understand how hard it is in this market! With the pressure to create high-quality food at affordable prices for customers it makes it hard to find the money to pay more. I am in hospo and absolutely love it. Chefing is my passion, the people I have met through my career and the travelling I have been able to do based on this profession, makes it one of the most exciting and interesting jobs you can have. But unfortunately, it is in a dangerous place at the moment because if it keeps growing like it is without the skilled people in it then not only do owners of businesses suffer but customers and tourism will as well. New Zealand is known for stunning beauty and great hospitality and I for one don’t want to see that lost. Also, this is not a Nelson problem, this is a New Zealand-wide prob-

Website hopes to give you a shot at your dream Andrew Board One Nelson man is on a mission to get you noticed. Tane Rameka says he got his idea for a new website to help New Zealanders get discovered after talking to various people around the region. "The feedback I got was that some people were doing jobs that they didn't enjoy or didn't make use of their skills. So I thought how could I make it easier for people to get discovered and to follow their passion." The answer, it seems, has been found. Tane has launched a new website called "Offer me a Shot". It encourages people to upload information about themselves, their passions and skills they have. Whether it's a club rugby player looking for a new team, a singer looking to be discovered or a labourer wanting to let employers know they're available for work. Tane hopes the site will be used by "decision makers" and employers who are looking for talented people but often struggle to find them, and by people keen

"What I've come to realise is that everyone has something they're either good at or something they'd like to be doing. Offer me a Shot is their chance to put those skills out there and, who knows, they might just be scouted from it." Tane says he has spoken to many who have settled in their career because they didn't know how to get themselves out there. "There's a lot of talent out there that goes undiscovered. I spoke to a guy who had been in the
same industry for 40 years before being made redundant. He thought that he had so much knowledge he could teach others coming up in the industry and would be happy with a five year contract to help teach. "This site allows these people to put their skills out there for employers to snap up." Tane says the site is "really diverse" with singers, actors, sports people and any job industry able to use it. "It's like a job listing site in reserve," he says.
"Upload a video or pictures of your skills and passion on the site and let prospective employers come to you." He says it can also work for bands putting their profile up which venues could then scout and book from. Tane is giving away a free annual membership for anyone who wants to be a part of it. "I'm trying to give people hope and confidence. It's free and you have nothing to lose." Tane says he wants to grow the site locally first and then expand it throughout New Zealand, before taking it global. He says the site is "win-win". "I just want people to have a crack at something they're passionate about. "If an employer can find a passionate employee then they are gold and, for the employee, they'll be doing what they're really passionate about." Kate Russell A local volunteer ambulance officer has mixed her day job with a passion for writing, to produce a series of books to dispel children’s fears of ambulances. Francine Currie of Tapawera launched her latest book, ‘Sam’s Makeover’ in Nelson on Saturday, adding to her four other books about ‘Sam the Ambulance’. The self-published author says she came up with the concept of Sam after seeing that children who require ambulance services are often “unsure or scared”. “As an ambulance officer, when we respond to patients we often find young children are scared of the ambulance, officers in uniform and unusual medical equipment,” she says. “Kids do find ambulances exciting, but the flip side is that when they actually need one, it can be quite frightening.” So, she decided to write the books to help adults have conversations with children about ambulance service so they are more familiar with what they do. Each book has a different theme, with the latest instalment educating kids about St John ambulances changing colour, from white to yellow. In other books, Sam goes to a rugby game, works with his friend the Rescue Chopper and attends an emergency in the country. “I thought it could be something like Thomas the Tank Engine – going on adventures all the time.” The books also use real St John paramedics as the characters, along with Nelson landmarks to make the books “relatable” for children. “Kids always recognise things in the pictures, like Nelson Hospital, and we now hear children call our ambulances Sam.” Francine, who has been an ambulance officer for 12 years, says she “had always fancied writing”. She ran her idea past a few people, including her father who loaned her the funds to turn her dream into a reality. The first book was published in 2012. The books are illustrated by local artist Paula Cunliffe. “It’s easy enough to write the books, but Paula really made Sam come alive for me,” says Francine. And, fans of the books can definitely bet on seeing more of Sam in the future. “I’ve never met a kid who hasn’t loved the books and I’ve always got kids asking me, ‘when are you writing your next book?’ The books are available from the St John Community Shop, Copy Press, Page and Blackmore, www.curriebooks.com or by contacting Francine directly at ambulancesamstories@gmail. com

The sailing season is now underway for many water-loving Nelsonians - including 11 year old Kaiden Farmer, who usually spends most of his time in a wheelchair. Kaiden is able to sail, thanks to a local charitable, volunteerbased organisation called Sailability Nelson, which provides safe sailing for those with an intellectual or physical disability. Kaiden's mother, Bianca Farmer, says her son has a chromosome deletion, which results in severe developmental delays in most areas. She says she never thought she would see him sailing - and, supported by a volunteer sailor in the boat, Kaiden "absolutely loves it". "Kaiden's level of need is so great we didn’t think it would be a goer," says Bianca. "We went and had a look, and worked out how to get him into the boat and provide some support for sitting. He loved it and smiled the whole time, splashing his hands in the wa-

"I love the fact it’s giving him access to something he wouldn't normally do. We would never have thought about sailing and it's so easy. You just turn up, they have all the boats and equipment ready. The volunteers are amazing." The family are now 'regulars' and Bianca adds that the social connection Kaiden is making with the various support sailors, is an added bonus. "The social aspect is also really great with his support sailor every week, and it's a great thing for some people to be doing – assisting children and
adults with all sorts of different needs." Sailabililty Nelson is also keen to recruit new sailing members. Upper Trafalgar Street was transformed into a piazza-like setting on Friday as the council experiments with making the area more pedestrian friendly. Tourists and locals alike seem thrilled with the new concept that sees the area become an outdoor dining destination, complete with outdoor music, beanbags and new seating. Nelson City Council approved the plan to close upper Trafalgar Street to traffic, the idea being to create an inviting, pedestrian-friendly dining space. It also offers restaurants within the zone significantly more room for outdoor seating. "Al Fresco Summer on Trafalgar" will run until March 31 next year and will also be used to trial and test the feasibility of declaring the space a pedestrian mall for four months every summer. Fantastic weather welcomed patrons on Friday evening and continued over the weekend, ensuring that Al Fresco Summer on Trafalgar got off to a flying start. “I think it’s going to be fantastic,” says Alex Ridsdale from The Vic Mac’s Brewbar. “As we saw on Friday night, it was pretty busy straight away and I think it’s just a safe place during the day to bring your kids where they can run around and enjoy the sun.” Zoe Williams from neighbouring restau-

It should have been done years ago because when you have days like this, everyone wants to be out in the sun.” As Saturday evening went on, more and
more people flocked to the dining hub and local musicians moved in to set up for the nights entertainment. Nelson residents Cathy McBride and Karen Inwood were among those enjoying the atmosphere and echoed many on the night when they asked, why wasn’t this done earlier? “The entire reason that we are here having a drink on a sunny Saturday afternoon is to celebrate the fact that the street has been closed off,” says Cathy. “It looks beautiful, we walked through here on Friday night and just thought it was completely marvellous, which is why we came back down today for a drink and a catch-up. I’m really excited that the whole summer is just going to rock up here.” Former Nelsonian Rebekah Ward-Johnston also loves the fact that the setup also meets the needs of families wanting to have nice evening out. “It’s a shame it wasn’t done 20 years ago when I was still here. I brought my daughter down here, she’s six years old and she was doing cartwheels along the paved areas. There is so much for freedom for her to run around and have a bit of fun." At the end of the trial period a report will be brought to council outlining the results of the trial and options for making the summer closure a permanent feature.

Sunny skies for Santa's big day 20

Thousands of people lined the streets on a very sunny Sunday, for the annual Nelson Santa Parade. Around 30 floats made their way from Trafalgar Park to Morrison Square for the carnival where children got to meet Santa Claus and enjoy the festivities. Parade organiser Huup Waagen says he was thrilled with the turnout. “It was a beautiful day - the new route was a success and the layout at Morrison Square was great.” Seventeen year old Jaid Vandenberg said he’s been attending the parade since he was little, and was impressed with changes this year. “The route was a lot better and the floats were pretty good this year. I liked the bubbles and there was lots of tinsel, and more free food than usual, including apples,” he said. Meanwhile, for Theo Skylakias, also 17, it was his first taste of a Nelson Santa Parade. He said it felt "relaxed and family-orientated" compared with the bigger city parades he has been to in the past. "Nelson’s smaller so there’s not quite as many floats, so it’s kind of nicer not having to wait as long and have it be so crowded," he said. Two $500 cash prizes went to the Celtic Pipe Band for the most participants and The Warehouse for the most creative entry, which locals voted for on the Nelson App. The best DIY float entry went to Community Art Works.

From the writer of the hugely popular "Maungatapu", comes a comedy about a favourite kiwi summer tradition – cricket. Nelson Repertory Theatre is performing Justin Eade's new play "67 off 52" at the Theatre Royal. It debuts next Wednesday night, and is on for four shows only. Directed by Hugh Neill, Justin says the play is about two Kiwi batsmen in a world cup cricket final against Australia. They are eight wickets down, need-
ing 67 off 52. “They don't trust each other due to match-fixing allegations and other personal gripes, but somehow manage to continue the run chase and stay competitive,” he says. Add to that a motor-mouthed Australian wicket-keeper and long-suffering South African umpire - both of whom met with a mysterious betting 'identity' in Mumbai two years ago - and you have four people trying to play a game with each thinking the other is trying to lose. “There are lots of bickering and misunderstanding, and a ticking time clock as the balls and
runs count down, but really it's about relationships,” says Justin. “With these guys all having played each other for ten years all over the world, it's really about a dysfunctional 'family' of mates, and of them finally coming to realise who their real friends are.” ‘67 off 52’ is on at the Theatre Royal from December 13-16. but the amount of love they’ve garnered from people in the region is huge. Their business began with a simple honesty box out on Neudorf Road, then they sold empanadas at the local markets, “and then people began asking for bread,” says Katrin. “We kept adding new products and taking on board what people said

We are really popular at the Nelson market, but we
only see our customers on Saturdays and they were always asking us when we would be opening a Nelson store.” The Nelson shop stocks most of the bakery’s sourdough bread varieties and, being right in the centre of the city, is largely focused on offering a lunch-bar type set-up too. “We believe our bread is the best for making sandwiches, filled rolls and toasties, so our hot and cold lunch options are just a different way to present our
products and are great for people wanting a healthy, delicious meal,” says Rodrigo. To match the growing number of outlets, Don Rodrigo Sourdough Bakery is enhancing its product offering by expanding into another bakery favourite, pastries and other sweet treats. Hernan Castillo has worked as a pastry chef for the last 15 years and his experience in the industry is extensive, making him a valuable addition to the Don Rodrigo team.
His passion for pastry has taken him around the world to destinations such as Brazil, Argentina, Spain, the USA, Germany and Australia, including Michelin star restaurants. “We’re really excited to have Hernan working with us, developing our new range of products, and our plan in the coming year is to extend the brand further with the introduction of a catering service for workplace morning teas and other business or family functions,” says Katrin. So, with Hernan and Rodrigo working side by side in the bakery’s Tahunanui factory, customers can continue to purchase their favourite products instore, try some new sweet and savoury creations and even enjoy Don Rodrigo’s bakery goods in the workplace or at an upcoming special occasion. “We love Nelson, we identify with the community and we

Rose Frank successfully continued the Tyree Photographic Studios storing a huge collection of negatives in a humidity-controlled strong room behind the Hallenstein Building, in what is now Montgomery Square. She
retired in 1946, aged 82 when she sold the business but retained control of the collection. Upon her death in 1954, Rose Frank bequeathed the entire 300,000 negatives of the Tyree Collection to the Historical Society, now administered by the Provincial Museum.

NEWS Fundraiser for Damin: The family of Damin Ching is holding a family fun day event this Sunday to raise money for his $120,000 “life changing” operation in the United States. Damin has right side hemiplegia, a type of cerebral palsy, and the operation would give him a new lease on life. The event is on 10 December, 10am – 2pm, at Broadgreen Reserve in Stoke. There will be bouncy castles, face painting, wacky hair, live entertainment, photos with Santa from 11.30am, craft stalls, food, drinks, icecream, plus activities for the whole family to enjoy.
Phantom auditions: Nelson Youth Theatre will be performing The Phantom of the Opera in April 2018 and are calling for teens and adults to audition this weekend. The auditions will be held on Saturday 9 December with registration at 9am and continuing through until 9.30pm at Nelson Intermediate School hall. Director Richard Carruthers says that, although the production will be staged by Nelson Youth Theatre, auditions are open to all ages from teens to adult; however, there is preference for youth aged 13 - 25. Going green: The Green Party is celebrating Christmas, the Railway Reserve and the elec-
tion result with a party on the reserve this Friday and everyone's invited to join them from 4.45pm. "We're setting up Christmas cheer stations offering festive drinks and nibbles to all those excellent Nelsonians who pedal, walk, skateboard and scooter along the Railway Reserve, and the public is welcome to join us," organiser Matt Lawrey says. The festivities will be taking place at Station Reserve at the top of the Bishopdale Saddle. Murray Williams played softball for Royals and the United Pirates during his time in Nelson. Amazing day, weather was good, people were poking fun at each other, it was great." Eight teams took part in the tournament, including one from the West Coast and another made up of family and friends of Murray. "Murray's widow Barbara pitched the first ball to start the tournament and it was quite emotional," says Don. Barbara played for the Williams family team with her grandson Alex acting as her designated runner. "Barbara was very emotional at the prize-giving afterwards. It was a great day for everyone who knew Murray," he says. Don says Murray was a giant of a man who loved his softball, as a young athlete in the North Island he won several athletics records and trained with Olympic middle distance champion Peter Snell. Adventure racers raising funds for Victory Boxing Andrew Board A group of novice adventure racers are hoping to punch above their weight when they compete in the world’s largest expedition race early next year so they can help can raise funds for “one of the best youth-focused charities in Nelson”. The Nelson Weekly’s Simon Bloomberg will be teaming-up with Nelson’s Jane Orbell, his Arrowtown-based nephew Simon Bloomberg Jnr and former Nelsonian Ryan Thomas for the GODZone Adventure Race to be held in Fiordland from March 1-10. And the team is aiming to do more than just compete in and, if all goes well, finish the 600km, non-stop multisport event - they are also hoping to use the race as a platform to raise funds for Victory Boxing. “GODZone is going to be an epic challenge, especially this year because it’s in Fiordland and they’ve made it three days longer than usual,” Simon says. “But we wanted to try and do something extra and use the race as a platform to raise funds for the community. “Once we’d committed to that, it didn’t take us long to agree on Victory Boxing as our team’s

And not just because we reckon Victory Boxing is one of the best youth-focused charities in Nelson – we also saw parallels between racing in GODZone and the gym’s goals, so it was a good fit.” Victory Boxing runs classes for hundreds of children aged eight to 18 and teaches them to be determined and motivated and overcome adversity. It also encourages them to be more resilient, stay focused and maintain an optimistic and positive outlook, which Simon says are all qualities that are critical in ad-
venture racing. Although Simon says they are “just a bunch of mid-packers”, the team has been training hard and will be giving it their best shot. “We’re not a champion team but we’ll be racing for a champion cause, so we need plenty of support,” he says. Victory Boxing’s Paul Hampton says they are delighted the adventure racers have offered to help the gym which relies extensively on donations, grants and fundraising to keep operating. He is encouraging businesses and individuals around Nelson
and Tasman to support the team’s fund-raiser. “It’s great that they are prepared to take the time to raise funds for the kids,” Paul says. “GODZone is such a challenging event that we have a lot of respect for them and feel privileged they have asked us if they can help. “The parallels are there too because the young kids we have at the gym face huge challenges every day. It’s all about taking one step at a time and keeping going forward.” Simon says they have already received good support from a number of businesses around Nelson and Tasman including Nelson Pine Industries, The Meadows, Upshift Communications, Printhouse Nelson and Gibbons Construction and are planning to approach others this month with all funds raised going directly to Victory Boxing. Adnam re-signs with Giants Locally Owned and Operated
Crowd favourite Kyle Adnam has re-signed with the Mike Pero Nelson Giants for the 2018 season. Adnam, a point guard, was a star player for the Giants when he arrived part-way through a tough 2017 season. His signature will be a huge boost for the Giants, which is aiming to improve on last season's efforts. Adnam is currently playing for Melbourne United in the Australian National Basketbal League and has represented Australia in an emerging national team. Chair of the Giants board, Bill Dahlberg, says the signing is a big step forward for the team. Fourteen year olds dominate sea swims Peter Gibbs The perfect summer continued to bless Nelson sea swimmers as the first race of the Clements Endurance Series between Tahunanui Beach and the Nelson Yacht Club took place on Sunday. The Opening Splash attracted 110 swimmers, eight choosing the short option of 600m from the Richardson St Steps and the remaining 102 doing the full distance. The rivalries of the Thursday night Port Nelson series spilled
over, with Luke Kelly and Hayden Squance continuing their battle at the front of the field. The 14-yearolds Sierra Thomas and Sophie Alexander were very close behind, grabbing the top women's spots. Squance took the initiative for most of the distance, but Kelly showed that he's slightly stronger, either in raw speed or determination, as he grabbed the lead once the finish was in sight to stop the clock at 24 minutes 36 seconds eight seconds ahead of Squance. Terry Bone, twice the age of the
leaders, took third in 25min 28sec. While the temperature and tide were perfect, the breeze meant that swimmers couldn't relax as they splashed past Magazine Point, Fifeshire Rock, the Richardson St Steps and Haulashore, with the surface flattening out over the final few hundred metres. Thomas was relentless behind Bone, chasing him all the way to finish a second behind in fourth place in 25min 29sec, a second ahead of Josh Sheridan, with Alexander four seconds further
back. Yet another 14-year-old, Piper Riley, was the third woman to finish, stooping the clock in 26min 24sec, ahead of 54-yearold Christina Harris (28.18). Women continued to match their male counterparts, with Isabella Thurlow (29.20), Marlborough swimmer Emma Moore (29.38), 59-year-old Janis Crampton (30.53), Wendy Healey (31.25), Renee Hunt (31.30), Deborah Hambly from Masterton (31.42) and Jude Vincent (32.14) putting 13 women into the top 30 finishers. In this most democratic of
sports, 9-year-old Marama Hambly finished the 600m swim in 23min 46sec, while 82-year-old Kerry Bateman (57.53) was unchallenged to win his 80-89 age group. Odette Llewellin (14.40) was the quickest in the 600m swim, ahead of Annabelle Clark (15.41), Lottie Stow (16.47) and Nettie Stow (17.44). Swimming continues in the Port Nelson Series on Thursday, while the Clements Endurance Series continues with the Eyebright Mile on December 31.

Nick Flyger wasn’t interested in cycling when he was a student at Waimea College, but 18 years later it’s become his life after he was appointed as the national sprint coach for the Australian track cycling team. Nick, who was back in New Zealand last week with the Australian track team at the Oceania champs, played rugby and softball when he was at Waimea College. Although he had no interest in cycling, all that changed when he went to Otago University to study physical education and biomechanics. “I became interested in adventure racing so, as part of that, I started doing a fair bit of mountainbiking,” Nick says. “Then, when I did my Masters degree in biomechanics, I started playing around with coaching and worked with a few students who were cycling to find things out. “I made a pretty good start because one of them was (Tour de France rider) Jack Bauer and I told him to forget mountainbiking and start racing on the road. He had such a big engine that you knew he would be a top road cy-
clist if he made the switch.” After completing his Masters, Nick got as job at the Malaysian Institute of Sport where he started to coach track cyclists. One of his star pupils was Azizulhasni Awang, who became the first Malaysian to win a track cycling medal at the Olympics when he finished third in the keirin final at Rio. Nick also started a PhD in Malaysia aimed at “understanding the
physiology of maximal repeated muscular contractions”, which is the fundamental sports science behind competitive sprint cycling. But Nick’s studies were “put on hold” when he secured a coaching job at the Australian Institute of Sport in Adelaide where he worked with the late Gary West who coached Australian cycling legend Anna Meares. Nick was appointed caretaker coach when Gary became ill last year and in May this year was
named as national sprint coach. The appointment was made by the new Australian cycling highperformance boss Simon Jones who has adopted a sports science approach to the sport. However, Nick says that science is just one part of the coaching equation which he says is remarkably uncomplicated. “I have a very simple coaching philosophy – it’s based on four things – culture, psychology, training and science. I believe
you need the first three before worrying about the one per cent gains you can get from science.” Although Nick still regards himself as a New Zealander, he has no reservations about coaching an Australian sports team. “It’s the nature of professional sport so I don’t have any worries about that. But I still look forward to coming home to Nelson at Christmas and this year I can’t wait to see the new velodrome – that’s really exciting.”

The Nelson Tigers got their claws on the Super Stoke Challenge Cup, taking the lead in the penultimate lap to send the home fans into raptures. The cup win over the Palmerston North Panthers at the Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway was the highlight of a busy night of racing on Saturday. There wasn’t the huge wall rides but the hits were still hard with the Panthers unable to get a car across the finish line. They took over the lead half way through the race when the Panthers' blockers managed to hold up Alex Bright ,who had led from the start. Shane Mellsop took over the race lead for the Panthers before import Peter Rees held him up with a lap and a half to go. Bright scooted around the outside of the duo to finish the final lap untouched for the epic win. The Tigers had started the race on the back foot early with Trevor Lineham suffering a collapsed right front suspension after being

Willie Humphries was the next Panther to fall. He went in for a hit but was spun up before being collected and left parked into the wall. 2NZ Jordan Dare was the other Panther to get taken out over the start line with three
laps to go, his gear lever popping out of the box, leaving him unable to move. Peter and Ethan Rees proved their credentials with some fine blocking on behalf of the Tigers while a relieved Alex Bright continued his good run, bringing the Tigers home for the win. The heat races provided some fantastic racing. Six other Palm-
erston North cars made the trip down while ex 1NZ Malcolm Ngatai made the trip from Christchurch. He joined two other former NZ champions to make a class field seldom seen outside of the titles. It gave the local drivers some quality racing before they travel north for championships after Christmas. Heat wins went to Mellsop, Peter
Bengston from Palmy and Ethan Rees. The Side Cars ran their Mark Thorn Memorial Trophy with Aidie Drake and Kieran Satherley picking up another trophy to add to their collection. The final heat was held up for a bit after 88N machine got squeezed off the start, sending swinger Rosie Taylor airborne before landing with a thump. She was aided off the track by St Johns. The T.Qs got some valuable track time with round two of their club champs. Heat wins went to Dylan Stone-Cuthbert and Morgan Frost before Jayden Corkill ran away with another feature win to close the points gap with a round to go. Speedway takes a break before Christmas with the next meeting scheduled for December 30. There is a street car race planned so if you want to have some fun and have an “old dunger” that won’t pass the mustard on the road, jump on the Nelson Speedway website and check out the entry criteria. It could be the most fun thing you could do over summer.
