Charles Anderson Neve Scott wanted to celebrate her birthday slightly differently this year. She was turning 14-years-old and thought it would be fun to get a group of her friends down to Tahunanui Beach to try out standup paddleboarding. But rather than the seven of them all getting their own one, they instead hopped aboard the five metre-long Big Tahuna, rented from Moana. The giant longboard is big enough for 10 children and about six adults but it gets harder to manoeuvr with each new person. “I just thought it would be fun,”
says Neve, who lives in Mapua and goes to Nelson College for Girls. Her dad David played chaperone on the beach, making sure they didn’t drift too far. He says the paddleboarding was all Neve’s idea. “A few of them are scouts so they know they have to work together if they are going to go anywhere.” And if they didn’t work together then the inevitable happens – they get wet. The full group of girls who jumped on the Big Tahuna are Elysia Green, 14, India Charles, 13, Lulu McCann, 14, Yeni Choi, 14, Megan Shields, 13 and Eleanor Bamfield, 14, along with Neve Scott.

As of today, Nelson’s campgrounds start becoming more representative of the entire country. “We have people coming from Christchurch, Wellington, and the West Coast - everywhere really,” says Tahuna Holiday Park manager Marcel Fekkes. The park will be packed until the early New Year with 2500 people descending on the seaside spot. “Our main arrival peak is Boxing Day, 28th and 29th - people tend to have Christmas at home and then come.” Marcel says, for many people, camping is a yearly highlight. “It becomes one of those family traditions that gets instilled and you carry it on. That’s great, as far as I’m concerned that’s Kiwi life.” The holiday park has a band for New Year’s Eve booked, a giant movie screen coming to play Wizard of Oz and a Kids’ Carnival all to keep its guests entertained. He says there has been a growth in international travellers since Nelson City Council implemented a new freedom camping bylaw. “There are always going to be things that happen, like a bust

The popular campground has 437 powered campsites and 17 cabins, and is 100 per cent booked out from December 26 right through to mid-January. “We are definitely fuller now than we usually are, which we are putting down to the good weather,” says Jeremy. “It’s not until around the third week of January when we start having a few spots available again.” He adds that most of their guests during the Christmas and New Year period are New
Zealanders, with tourists making up most of the pre-Christmas bookings. Meanwhile, camping spots at Cable Bay Holiday Park were snapped up “months in advance”. Campground manager Josephine Hunter says she is still getting daily enquiries, but has to turn people away. “Lots of people booked their spots early this year, and from 22 December though to the New Year we are full, and it could stay that way throughout January if the good weather stays.” She says most of their guests are Kiwis, with quite a few family groups from Christchurch and the North Island.

Dry weather prompts water warning Nelson residents are being encouraged to use water sparingly during this dry period and to consider alternative water supply options “The recent dry, warm weather has seen river levels drop to within 10 percent of the trigger point for rural water restrictions, for Nelson residents who take their water directly from streams and from bores within 20m of a stream,” the Nelson City Council says. It estimates this will affect about 500 households. “Monitoring is continuing and, in the absence of significant or sustained rain, restrictions could be necessary within the next two weeks,” the council says. This will mean that those taking
water from bores and streams that breach “trigger” flows will be asked to take water only for the following purposes: • Domestic use – the essential water you need for your home • Drinking water for animals • Firefighting as required Affected residents will be asked to stop taking water for crop and garden irrigation and any other nonessential uses should trigger flows be reached. Residents with resource consents for taking water should check the conditions and adhere to them. In the event that water levels reach “minimum flows”, further restrictions may be requested, says the council.
‘Catch a Million’ returns One Nelson cricket fan could be $50,000 richer simply by grabbing a one-handed catch as the Tui Catch a Million promotion returns this summer. Tui is stumping up a total prize pool of $1,150,000 which will be split across all Blackcaps short format matches. Richmond Market Day is billed as the biggest market in the top of the south and the town’s busiest day of the year. Around 140 stalls will line the street providing the crowds of people with an amazing array of clothes, crafts, jewellery, fresh produce, art, plants and so much more, from all around the country. Nelson App reaches 10,000 downloads Just six months after its launch, the Nelson App has now been downloaded by more than 10,000 people, highlighting its popularity. The app features news, sport, things to do, weather, health and beauty listings, trades and services, places to eat and drink, and also where to shop. It is owned and operated by the same local media company that publishes Nelson Weekly.
Managing Director Andrew Board says its been a phenomenal six months. “A year ago this app was an idea on a bit of paper. Since then we’ve collaborated with the Wanaka App and created what I think is the future of community news. It has everything you’d traditionally find in a newspaper but all within an app on your smartphone.” The app directly employs two journalists and a sales representative and Andrew
says it is likely to expand further in 2018. “That’s the exciting thing, while other media outlets are laying journalists off, we’re hiring. It’s an exciting time for our industry and for local news in Nelson and Tasman.” The app hit the 10,000 download mark on December 21, which represents 37 per cent of the smartphone market in Nelson.

Rabbit Island Rabbit Island truly is a unique jewel in the region’s crown, offering people a vast sandy beach, safe waters to swim in and a great network of cycle tracks connecting to Tasman’s Great Taste Trail. The beach features picnic areas, barbeque facilities, toilets and a boat ramp, not to mention the Mapua Ferry which takes people from Rabbit Island across to Mapua, where you’ll find great shopping and dining opportunities.
2. Kaiteriteri Mountainbike Park The Nelson-Tasman region is renowned for its mountainbiking, with hundreds of kilometres of man-made trails meandering through stunning scenery. There are a huge number of choices including Dun Mountain, Codgers, Silvan and, of course, Kaiteriteri Mountain Bike Park. The park's network of tracks has increased dramatically since the first stage was completed in 2009 and now has 28 trails ranging from the grade two Easy Rider that connects to the Great Taste Trail, right through to the advanced trails like Skullduggery. One of the parks most popular loops is the twisting, turning
sphere and contain some of the clearest water ever measured. Located in the Takaka Valley, around six kilometres west of Takaka township, Te Waikoropupu Springs is home to a number of native creatures including the long-finned and short-finned eel, koaro and a healthy population of giant kokapo, one of New Zealand’s most threatened native fish. Within the forest areas, birds like the fantail, bellbird, tui and kereru are observed in the wetlands, while grey duck, white heron and the black shag are regular visitors to the water.

While the walk itself takes you through some pleasant scenery, the real reward is arriving at the beautiful Whispering Falls waterfall. The track goes through a private forest, follows the Hackett Creek and the Miner River and requires three river crossings, all of which are bridged. The first (lower) waterfall is reached five minutes after the last bridge, while the second (upper) waterfall is a further five minutes. The walk is easy and recommended for families with kids, and if you’re looking for a picnic

Mapua Wharf Mapua has seen some big changes over the years that have transformed its old wharf into a fantastic hospitality and craft hub. It also offers a wonderful variety of activities that the whole family can enjoy, and is connected to Rabbit Island via the Mapua Ferry for those making the most of Tasman’s Great Taste Trail. Take a leap off the wharf or throw in a line and try to catch a fish, wander through the shops and galleries or relax in the café’s and restaurants that serve up fantastic food and drink.

8. Maitai Caves The walk to the Maitai Caves is largely flat, on a well-formed track and takes people through some beautiful mature beech and podocarp forest. The last section of the track is much steeper, however, this only lasts for 10 minutes before you arrive at the entrance to the limestone caves. The caves are steep-sided and, even in dry weather, they can be slippery so take care if you’re venturing inside. The first cave is about 15 metres long with a second smaller chamber behind it. Make sure you bring a torch so you can fully explore this spectacular place. Including return, the walk takes around four hours. 9. Grampians The Grampians are the big rolling hills behind Nelson, with pockets of regenerating native vegetation and exotic trees. A moderately hard walk, the Grampians offer people views out to the marina, the central city and the Boulder Bank, starting at the corner of Brougham and Collingwood Streets or from the centre of town walk via Selwyn Place and Collingwood St. At the top of Collingwood St there is

a map of the Grampians, detailing the numerous tracks you can follow, depending on what type of activity you’re looking for. 10. Riwaka Resurgence If you’re looking for the perfect swimming hole in which to cool off this summer, then you’ll want to pay a visit to the Riwaka Resurgence. Just before the climb over the Takaka Hill the road splits in two, with the signposted road to the resurgence off to the left. From the car park, a short walk takes you to the cave and the beautiful deep, clear pool where the Riwaka River emerges from the depths of the Takaka Hill.

Each year, people drown in New Zealand waters who may have been saved if they had been wearing a lifejacket, says the Coastguard. The Old4New Lifejacket Upgrade campaign which went nationwide for the first time last year, saw over 4500 lifejackets traded in for new across the country in an effort to help keep boaties safe on the water. Since the campaign started three
years ago, over 7000 lifejackets have been traded in, meaning thousands of boaties are now safer on the water. “Lifejackets save lives, it’s as simple as that,” says Coastguard New Zealand CEO Patrick Holmes. “Two-thirds of recreational boating fatalities would likely be prevented if lifejackets were worn, a lifejacket has never ruined a day on the water.” The Old4New Lifejacket Upgrade van will be visiting over 35 major boat ramps and locations around the country throughout the busy summer holiday period, laden
with lifejackets. The van will be at the Kerr Bay boat ramp in St Arnaud, Thursday, January 4, from 1pm to 4pm. It will then be at the Akersten St boat ramp in Nelson on Saturday, January 20, from 9am to 1pm, and on Sunday, January 21, at Bays Boating in Motueka from 8am to 11am and at the Kaiteriteri beach front, opposite the campsite, from 1pm to 4pm. “It’s a fantastic opportunity for people to update their lifejackets,” says Coastguard Nelson president Wayne Harrison. “I got two last year, and they’re
great.” All you have to do is bring your old or damaged lifejacket to the Old4New team at the van and receive a discount on a quality, modern and fit-for-purpose Hutchwilco lifejacket. Boaties and members of the public can also get advice about boating and water safety from the friendly team. According to the Coastguard, only 70 per cent of boaties say they wear a lifejacket at all times on the water. This rate is highest for kayakers and canoeists (83 per cent), and
falls to just over 60 per cent for people in power boats and 55 per cent for people in sail boats. “We advise people to wear them at all times – things can happen very quickly and you don’t always have time to reach for them,” says Wayne. The Old4New Lifejacket Upgrade is proudly funded by Maritime New Zealand with support from the Southern Trust, in conjunction with generous support from kiwi companies Hutchwilco and the Giltrap Group. Christmas around For many Nelsonians, Christmas is a time spent decorating trees, wrapping and unwrapping presents, playing Snoopy’s Christmas too many times, and leaving milk and cookies out for Santa. But the multicultural nature of our region means there are many other different traditions being celebrated too. Kate Russell spoke to three immigrants who are bringing aspects of their culture into their Kiwi Christmas this year. Switzerland: Andrea Goodwin arrived in New Zealand 18 years ago from Switzerland and, although she is married to a New Zealander, she still incorporates her homeland into her Christmas. With two young children, she says it’s important to carry on those Christmas traditions. “In Switzerland, Santa is known as 'Samichlaus' who has an assistant called ‘Schmuzli’, and they visit on 6 December,” says Andrea. “He’ll turn up and tell the kids what they have done good or bad and give them some goodies - normally nuts and mandarins - and we do this with other families in Nelson.” Christmas is also celebrated on Christmas Eve, where candles are lit on the Christmas tree and presents are

That is very traditional.” Andrea says it can be “tricky” to incorporate these traditions into the New Zealand way of doing Christmas. “But it definitely adds another layer to our celebrations,” she adds. Bhutan: Bipan Pradhan, his wife Anjana, and
their 19-year-old daughter Pragya, are a refugee family from Bhutan who have been in Nelson for three years. Bipan is Bhutanese of Nepalese origin, and Anjana is Nepalese. The family practice the Hindu religion. “We celebrate two festivals - Dashain, in October, and Tihar, known as Bhai Tika, in November,” says Bipan. “Our Christmas celebration is somewhat similar to Bhai Tika, there is not much difference, we play Deusi and Bhailoh like Christmas carols, going

from house to house singing and dancing, and, of course, there is a get together for a celebration.” Their Christmas this year will involve a big celebration with their community, involving dancing, prayer, singing, dressing up and Bhutanese/Nepalese food. They give each other presents, but they don’t usually practice any typical western Christmas celebrations - although Pragya says there are many in their commu-
nity who have “embraced” some Kiwi traditions. Philippines: Marie Lindaya moved to New Zealand from the Philippines 28 years ago and now lives in Richmond. Even though she has been here for nearly three decades, she still celebrates Christmas in true Filipino fashion. “People in the Philippines like to

celebrate Christmas for as long as possible, it’s the most important holiday of the year,” says Marie. “The playing of Christmas carols starts in September and the formal celebrations start on 16 December and continue to the first Sunday in January.” Marie says Christmas for her is a mixture of western and native Filipino traditions. “We have Santa, Christmas trees, cards and carols - but we also have our own traditions such as the ‘parol’, which is a bamboo pole or frame with a lighted star lantern on it. She says Christmas Eve is important and many people stay awake all night, going to church for mass, followed by a midnight feast called ‘Noche Buena’ that includes lechon (roasted pig), ham, fruit salad, rice cakes and steamed rice. Marie has also been volunteering at both the Nelson and Richmond community Christmas dinners for many years, and, if she’s not overseas visiting family, that’s where she’ll be. She also joins the Filipino community in the region each year for a get-together at St Marys Church. Marie says regardless of where

DIY Bird Feeder – You’ll need the cardboard tube from your toilet paper roll, plenty of peanut butter, a selection of raw seeds which you can get from your supermarket and some string. Smear the cardboard tube with peanut butter and then roll in the seeds. Thread the string through the tube and tie to form a loop. Hang your bird feeder in the garden then wait for some hungry birds to visit. Mini Paper Kite – On a windy day, nothing beats flying a kite at the park, especially when

Keeping the kids amused during the school holidays can seem like a daunting task, especially when you consider the cost of things these days. That’s why we’ve asked local preschool teachers Jemma Burn and Maree Claridge from Busy Bees for their advice on what young children love to do, and have put together some ideas for you to try at home these holidays. Over the summer months, Jemma and Maree recommend plenty of water and messy play, which could include freezing coloured blocks of ice, natural painting with sticks and leaves or making playdough and adding a few extras such as flower petals, leaves or even just some essence for a pleasant scent. “Storytelling is a cheap and fun activity for parents to do at home,” says Maree. “At Busy Bees we sometimes use different hats, or just sit the kids down and let their imaginations run.” Jemma and Maree also agree that kids love joining in with everyday activities, things we often see as chores. “Kids just see it as fun and helping out, and they’re learning lifelong skills too,” says Maree. Discover something new in Kahurangi National Park Jessie Johnston Upper Gridiron Hut and Lower Gridiron Shelter are certainly two of DOC’s more interesting accommodations and make the perfect destination for a family day out. The first step is getting yourself to Flora Car Park where you’ll find a toilet and information kiosk. Roads from Nelson and Motueka meet the Motueka River at Ngatimoti, where a bridge crosses to West Bank Road. The unsealed Graham Valley Road climbs steeply to the car park, although is suitable for most vehicles. Walking at a leisurely pace, it is around two hours to the shelters along an old miners’ track, taking you past Flora Hut and beneath a beautiful beech forest. The sound of the river is never far away, and the track is well formed with a gentle downward slope on the way in. A quick 50m scramble is required to reach Upper Gridiron, which is located under a solid rock sheet. The hut features three bunks, a sink with running water, an inside woodstove and outside fire pit, complete with swinging bench seat. A long drop

can also be found a few metres away from your accommodation. Jump back on the main track, head a few metres onwards and you’ll find the crown jewels, Lower Gridiron Shelter. This is sure to be a hit with the kids as there are plenty of opportunities to climb and explore the unique structure. There’s an open fire and a bench seat at ground level, as well as an open timber platform which sits, once again, under a huge rock overhang, reached by a substantial ladder. While it lacks the usual architectural features of DOC accommodation, namely walls and a door, this shelter still manages to create a homely feel when you enter through the trees and continues to be a delight to visit. The man behind these shelters is Max Polglaze, who worked as a Forest Service ranger in the 1970s and slowly developed the sites over several years. Lower Gridiron was used as a rough shelter and was completed in around 1978, while Upper Gridiron was completed in 1980. So, pack a bag, grab the kids and discover the Gridiron shelters this summer.

It’s fast, it’s furious, it’s real racing on real roads, and if you want to get a piece of the action you need to head along to the Port Nelson Races on Tuesday, January 2. It’s an iconic Nelson event that has been running for 25 years, however, major developments to Port Nelson put a halt to the races last year, to the disappointment of many keen fans. Organising committee member Adrian Curtis says the street races are one of the most unique racing events in the country, combining the high-speed thrills of motorbike racing up to 200kmph with unrivalled spectator viewing. “It’s the closest you’re ever going to get to motor racing,” says Adrian. “You can’t quite comprehend what 200kmph is like, but when you’re five feet away from it, it’s pretty impressive. I know it’s not quite as fast as the Isle of Man TT, but it’s that sort of thing and that’s what makes this event so special.” Over 100 riders from around the country will be attending the races, with thousands of spectators expected to come along and watch the high-octane action too.

peting against the specialised road bikes. This section should make it easier for them to compete as they’ll be faster on the tight corners.” On the day, gates will open at 8:30am with the first race getting underway at around 10am. At 12:30am riders will take a break for lunch before things kick off again at 1:15pm, with 4pm marking the last race. Riders will be divided into a number of classes before heats are held to find the fastest competitor in each one. “For the final race, we pick individuals that have excelled in their classes and we invite them to race against each other for the title of King of the Port,” says Adrian. As for spectators, there is trackside viewing in most areas around the circuit, allowing people to get closer to the action that at almost any other race circuit in the world today. The pit area will also be open for people to walk around throughout the day. “The Port Nelson Races seem to be a big thing with spectators, we get pretty big crowds and we have people coming back year after year to watch,” says Adrian. “We’ve also got riders who have been coming back time and time again to race and they’re the people who make this event special.” Programmes and race t-shirts will be available for purchase, including children’s sizes, while a wide vari-

Organised by the Nelson Road Racing Association, the Port Nelson Races are not to be missed and make a great day out for the whole family. Be prepared for the water this summer Brittany Spencer & Judene Edgar Nelson Tasman is a boaties’ paradise and nearly half of all adult Kiwis head out onto the water in a boat each summer. Unfortunately, Maritime New Zealand says that on average, 20 boaties die each year on New Zealand’s waters. Nelson Harbourmaster Dave Duncan says that the key is preparation because the buck stops with the skipper, no matter how big or small your boat is. “If you can, do a Coastguard education course, understand what your obligations are, be prepared, and always err on the side of safety.” Dave says a big part of being prepared to go out is knowing the weather conditions. “The weather is one of the most important elements because it can change so quickly, don’t be the person that gets caught out by a sudden change to southerlies or strengthening northerlies in the afternoons.” Boaties are advised to check the forecast through the MetService Marine App or the Port Nelson website before heading out and listen in to the NowCasting channels when out on the water. Skippers also need to ensure that there is one lifejacket, in the right size, for each person onboard. However, lifejackets and communications work together. Wearing your lifejacket, you are much less likely to drown, but if you can’t call for help no one knows to rescue you, and then hypothermia becomes a serious risk. Dave recommends taking at least two waterproof forms of communication with you – VHF radio, cellphone, distress beacons (EPIRB or
PLB) and flares or torches. “Nothing travels faster than disaster, we’ve had nine near misses in this region since August already where people can say but for their lifejacket or but for their cellphone, they would have perished. Research from Maritime New Zealand found that 34 per cent users of powered vessels and 38 per cent of sail boats users consumed alcohol while on the water and the Safer Boating Forum has identified alcohol as one of the key risk factors in fatal and non-fatal boating accidents. Dave says that the best rule of thumb is to wait until you’re back on dry land. Essential safety equipment checklist: •Lifejackets – the correct size for each person •Communication equipment – two waterproof methods •Navigation – charts, plotter, GPS, depth sounder, lights •Alternative power – a spare outboard or oars •Bailing system – bucket, bailer or bilge pump •An anchor – with three to six metres of chain •Fire extinquisher – stored within reach of the deck or cockpit •First aid kit – basic kit for minor accidents or injuries •Torch - spare bulb and batteries •Throwline – for person overboard •Fuel – take one-third to get there, one-third to return and one-third in reserve •Clothing — always take warm clothing •Water — make sure you have a decent supply More information can be found at nelson.govt. nz/recreation/recreation/boating-and-fishing

Why don’t people appreciate the kahawai?
The humble kahawai When I fished Tasman Bay waters for the first time I couldn’t believe it. There were thousands of fish that made the water boil, they were easy to catch, tasted good and put up a hell of a fight when hooked. Yet the locals seemed to ignore the massive work ups. That was half a dozen years ago, and I still don’t understand why people don’t appreciate the humble kahawai more. Especially at this time of the year when other table fish are oftentimes few and far between these fish provide exceptional fishing on light gear. A kingy of the same weight couldn’t fight any harder. Try the morning hours in the area between the radio mast and Pepin Island (but stay out of the marine reserve) and chase the

Small, slim spinners, skirted lures or micro jigs work a treat, but change trebles to large single hooks, otherwise you will get a spectacular kahawai airshow but hardly any fish in the bin. Cast or troll the lures and don’t forget to let the kids have a go too! Bleed them and put them on ice immediately to get a perfect result and give the raw fillets a try; either thinly sliced as sashimi with soy sauce and wasabi or marinated island style as ika mata – you won’t regret it, I promise. The Tasman Thunder has named an experienced line-up to head to Auckland for the New Zealand Stock Car teams championship on December 29 and 30. Having made the final two years ago, the team have unfinished business to try to claim the top prize and bring the event back to Nelson. The Thunder will be the only South Island team making the journey this year. Keightley Teece makes a welcome return after missing the earlier teams events. The current South Island champion claimed fifth spot at last year’s New Zealand individual title. His inclusion will bolster the lineup. Michael Paynter leads from the front. The quiet assassin knows how to use the bumper but is equally at home setting the pace. Brad Neiman generally takes up the lead. He will be on the pace and is crafty at avoiding trouble. Adam Hall does what needs to be done in the block role, making a

The Thunder won the Teams Brawl here in Nelson in November and were on the end of an unlucky referee’s call on Christchurch to miss the final a week later. They will be one of the most experienced teams at this year’s title and head north with high expectations. They come from all areas and many are retirees who have extra hours to devote to community projects. "Many are former cricketers keen to give back to the sport and who want to see Saxton Oval continue to get such matches. Others do it because they like the interaction with the public and enjoy welcoming visitors to the region, and some do it as it is a great day out where they also get to watch an international game.’’ Volunteers are provided with a uniform, food and drink and there is a follow-up meal as a thank-you. "We are very lucky to have such a keen and active database of volunteers who are vital to the whole operation and whom we really appreciate,’’ says Miles. "They are like a big family and there may be others out there who want to be part of this.’’

The 71-year-old has devoted more than 30 years to sport as a rugby referee, cricket umpire and Trafalgar Park scoreboard operator. He is still umpiring senior club cricket and is one of the many Saxton Oval stalwarts who put their hand up every year when Sport Tasman calls for helpers. He and his fellow volunteers will again play a key part in making sure our two cricket internationals over summer are a hit. They will show you where to park your car, check your bags, help you to your seat and point out where to find everything. They will keep the ground tidy and even assist with getting the covers on and off in the event of a weather break in play. "I would be at the games anyway but I enjoy being able to do something to help to make them a success,’’ says Millar. He started off looking after a sightscreen before it was fully electronic but in the last few years he has helped with crowd support and comfort on the embankment, although he says Nelson specta-
