Three sites close to Nelson’s CBD to cater for freedom campers could be up and running as early as this Friday – at a cost of nearly $80,000. The city is expecting an “influx” of freedom campers this summer following the
closure of SH1 after the Kaikoura earthquake. It will cost Nelson City Council an unbudgeted $78,000 to set up the designated areas, which are located at the Akerston Hardstand, Rutherford Park, and Haven Rd beside Anzac Park. Combined, the sites could accommodate up to 373 vehicles.
Non-notified resource consents have been lodged, and the sites will operate until March. The budget will cover wi-fi, security/monitoring, bins, portaloo hire and cleaning, general cleaning and vandalism, and portable water tankers at a cost of $65,000. Other additional costs will include secur-
ing consents, communications and signage, totalling $13,000. Mayor Rachel Reese says she was hoping to introduce a temporary freedom camping by-law for this summer, but since it’s not possible to have it in place in time for

“once you walk out the door and change your mindset into work mode, it’s usually a great shift”. “Before I had children, I’d choose to work Christmas mornings,” Jodi says. “But now I have three boys, all primary school age, so this year I’ve volunteered to work an afternoon because it suits the family. “It’s always hard to drag yourself away. Your first priority is always your family, so it’s difficult. “But your second priority is your work and the people who need looking after. Once you get there it’s a great day because everyone is usually in good spirits. It’s usually very jovial and we take special treats along for staff and have some fun.” Jodi says she will wake up at 5.30am on Sunday and open presents with her family before
heading out to Christmas lunch with family and friends. Then she’ll go to work and “come back at 11.30 at night and see if they are still there”. Senior sergeant Blair Hall of the Nelson Police has also worked his share of Christmas Days and says “it just goes with the territory when you are a front-line police officer”. However, Blair concedes that spending most of Christmas Day working became harder once he married and had children. “It’s never easy missing family events on Christmas Day but you always know well in advance if you are working and juggle things around your shift. It’s not so bad because, if you are on the early shift, you get to the family dinner and the guys on late shift have a family lunch before the start. “We also encourage our staff,
if they have a quiet period, to make contact with their families during their shift. It’s not always possible because our work is so unpredictable but they can usually get time for something, even if it’s a phone call.” Fortunately, Blair says Christmas Day is traditionally quiet for police “because it’s such a big family day”. He says the main issues relate to increased traffic movement as people drive around to visit family and friends and domestic violence “because Christmas can be a stressful time, financially and emotionally, for some families”. There will also a significant number of people working in the hospitality industry on Christmas Day and, although it won’t be a matter of life and death, they still help make it enjoyable for the rest of us. And for many of them, including

Tahuna Beach Holiday Park and Motel manager Marcel Fekkes, it’s always one of the busiest days of the year. “We have 2500 to 3000 people in the camp over Christmas so we have to keep about 50 staff on over that period,” Marcel says. “We usually get about 100 people arriving on Christmas Day and another 200 on Boxing Day, so there’s always a lot of preparation on Christmas Eve. “I’ll get up at 6am on Christmas Day and get into work at 7am, and then jump on the bike and do a round of the park to see if everything is in order.” Although it’s busy, Marcel says it’s always enjoyable because the Christmas spirit is contagious and everyone is happy. And after a lifetime of working in the hospitality industry, Marcel says working on Christmas Day is “just part of the game”.

Council creates freedom camping spots for summer

FROM PAGE 1 this summer, they needed something to “fill the gaps”, and doing nothing was “not an option.” Nelson City councillors voted on the late agenda item at last Thursday’s full council meeting, with 11 supporting the idea and two against it - Cr Tim Skinner and Cr Ian Barker. Cr Barker stated that the decision was “off the hoof ” and “not properly thought out.” “We’re throwing money at it it’s bad decision-making and it’s going to result in problems,” he said. Cr Skinner said that it would be “laying out the red carpet” for freedom campers and could take business off backpackers. He, along with Cr Kate Fulton, also questioned whether the wi-fi would be necessary. But several councillors said it was “crucial” to provide it. Cr Paul Matheson said that since the majority of freedom campers are from overseas it would be “essential” for them to have wi-fi to keep in touch with their families. Cr Matt Lawrey also spoke in favour of the idea. “Wi-fi is just a modern fact of life - they will just go park somewhere they can get it. It’s not a problem, it’s an opportu-

Group Manager Infrastructure, Alec Louverdis, said that the sites were chosen for various reasons, including proximity to the CBD and ease of securing consents. Other areas considered were Founders Park, Sovereign St skatepark, Neale Park at North Rd and Tahunanui Beach. He stated that Nelson usually has around 1,000 freedom campers over the summer period in its two car parks - Buxton and Montgomery - with a peak of around 80 at any one time in each car park. Signage in the carparks currently encourages freedom campers to use the Brook, Maitai and Tahuna motor camps, but these are all outside of the CBD and require payment.
“The intent is to encourage freedom campers not to use the city’s parking squares, but to ensure aggregation of campers for ease of security and monitoring in areas that are close to the CBD and easily managed,” he stated in his report. German freedom camper Annika Maier, who has been in Nelson for two nights, was happy to hear of the new sites. “We’ve been parking in Buxton Square and Saturday night was crazy - we had lots of drunk people knocking on our door.” she said. “We are not self-contained so sometimes it can be hard to find a place. We are in New Zealand for six months so we want to travel cheaply.” She said that water and toilets were essential, and although Wi-Fi would be good, it wouldn’t be necessary.

ITM’s special worker retires Simon Bloomberg One of ITM Nelson’s most special employees got on his bike last week and rode out of the Pascoe St yard for the last time, signalling the end of more than 30 years of dedicated service to the building supply company. In fact, Graham Dougherty, 70, has been working there so long nobody knows exactly when he started. And Graham himself, who is special needs and was placed in the position by IHC, isn’t sure either, although ITM Nelson’s group sales manager and director Rodney Wolf thinks “it’s about 30 years”. “When I came here in 1999, he was already here from the previous owner from 1992 and he was here before that, so it’s got to be close to 30 years,” Rod says. “He tells everyone he’s only been here 25 years, but it’s longer than that.” But what Rod does know is that Graham “is good at what he does

Dean says Graham was also very dedicated and rarely missed a day in the last 20 years. “I can only remember one day he didn’t arrive on time and we got pretty worried - we thought he might have been knocked off his bike. “So we went around to his place and we found him watching the Olympics on television - he was so excited by it he forgot about work.” ITM purchased Graham a new commuter bike from Village Cycles and a 20-movie pass for his retirement present.

Local man arrested for alleged beach stabbing: A local 25-year-old has been arrested and charged in relation to a stabbing incident on Friday evening. At around 9pm, an Irish tourist was running near the playground at Tahunanui Beach when she was approached by a man who stabbed her in the leg with a large knife. The woman received hospital treatment for the moderate wound and has been left very traumatised by the incident. Police would like to thank the members of the public who came to the woman’s aid and helped identify the alleged offender, who was arrested a short time later.

Truck takes out power pole along Ridgeway: The Ridgeway was cordoned off from Arapiki Rd to Marsden Rd last Monday after a truck travelling northeast along The Ridgeway took out a power pole. “We’ve had a bit of a car vs truck vs power pole situation,” says Stoke Station Officer Ryan Hitchcock. “There was a car parked on the other side of the power pole and the truck has come by, clipped the car, and gone straight into the pole.” The owner of the car was up having lunch in a nearby house when the crash happened and the truck driver was unharmed and able to get out of the vehicle. Councillor to tackle tagger Nelson City councillor Tim Skinner knows who is responsible for the wave of tagging in the city and he plans to "ask him to stop." Tim received photos on Sunday night of the latest outbreak of tagging and a photo of the alleged tagger, brazenly giving the photographer an paint-stained finger. The person, who took the photos and wishes to remain anonymous, also provided a link to the tagger's Facebook page which features posts bragging about his latest tags. "The person sent me the photos last night," Tim says. "They have done well to identify the tagger, so I said I'd go and knock on the door of this guy myself and say "what the hell are you doing" and ask him to stop. Tim says he isn't surprised the tagger has been identified because "Nelson is a small community and it doesn't take long to find out who's doing these sorts of things". The tagger is believed to have spray-painted graffiti on a wall in an lane between Bridge St and Montgomery car park on Friday night. He is thought to be responsible for over 50 tags around the city and has a signature 'Repa'.

'Thanks for helping me walk again' Andrew Board A Nelson schoolgirl’s brush with life in a wheelchair has been ended thanks to the physiotherapists at Nelson Hospital. Claudia Gillespie was feeling nauseous in her social studies class at Waimea College this winter, she excused herself to head to the bathroom. There she collapsed and when she woke up she couldn’t feel the use of her legs.

Fortunately, the 15-year-old was able to text a friend who alerted office staff. An ambulance took Claudia to hospital along with her concerned parents. Over the next few days various tests were conducted and the family were told she suffered a functional weakness, which is caused by stress and can leave sufferers paralysed for several months. For Claudia it was a scary time but she had one focus: to walk again. “It’s all I thought about really, I never thought that I wouldn’t be able to walk again.” After three months working with the physiotherapists at Nelson Hospital, Claudia was desperate to return to school. She was given a wheelchair and made her way back to class. But some bullying, including losing some friends, threw even more challenges at her. But a month later, with some innovative ideas from her physio, Claudia took her first steps in around four months at Nelson Hospital. “It was amazing,” says her dad Andrew. “They were really clever and came up with some great ideas to get her legs moving. Slowly, but surely, she started to walk again.” And it was slow.

At first, she could only shuffle along, then some uncoordinated, shaky steps, before eventually able to walk across the room by herself. Claudia says it felt great to be walking again. “My legs ached so much, they were so sore, but it did feel good to be able to get out of that wheelchair.” Claudia and her parents contacted Nelson Weekly because she
feels that without the help and support of the physiotherapists at Nelson Hospital, she wouldn’t be walking. Andrew says they wanted to thank them publicly. “We said, ‘you guys are amazing’, and they said, ‘tell the paper, because we only get bad press’. “When you’ve been in a situation for like four months and you see people with sweat pour-
ing off them trying to help your kid walk… it’s hard to put into words.” Claudia says she’s looking forward to spending her summer holiday enjoying the outdoors of Nelson and trying to catch up on some of the school work she missed. A good problem to have, when there were much worse to deal with just a few months ago.

More apartments A Nelson car park will be home to the city’s newest apartments next year. Last week, Bayleys Real Estate announced the fourfloor apartment building will feature 14 residences ranging from 91 square metre onebedroom units to 223 square metre three-bedroom homes.
It comes just a month after Bayleys also announced it was marketing 32 apartments which are to be build on Haven Rd. Occupying a corner site of Trafalgar and Nile Streets, across the road from the Cathedral's grounds, the building will have views over the city and to the sea.

Well, according to according to Trade Me’s annual list of top ten Christmas searches for the Nelson Bays region, they want imaginary animals, sports gear and the good old kiwi classic – the trampoline. The internet trading site has revealed that the most searched for item in Nelson during November was Hatchimals, followed by Nike, trampolines, Lego, iPhones, Adidas, Country Road/Karen Walker, puppies, Pokémon and PS4 (Playstation 4). Round up of 14 hour council meeting TINY THEATRE: A “Tiny Theatre” to be housed in a 40 foot shipping container has been granted $20,000 from Nelson City Council. The proposed theatre would be in the Kirby Lane Container Mall, on Bridge St, and will help local artists show their talents, say the trustees behind the idea. They spoke to councillors at a full meeting on Thursday. Trustees Laura Irish, Dan Allan and Lloyd Harwood said the proposed theatre will help grow Nelson’s performing arts scene. Dan said the arts have good facilities in Nelson with the Theatre Royal and work underway at the Nelson School of Music, but that the Tiny Theatre would target a different market. “[This is] more about emerging artists, fringe arts, getting youth engaged in theatre and having a presence in the CBD. When we think Nelson, we think an artistic place and this goes to the heart of that.” COUNCIL SUPPORTS SOUTHERN LINK INVESTIGATION: Mayor Rachel Reese will write a letter to New Zealand Transport Agency indicating Nelson City Council’s support of its investigation into the Southern Link road, as exclusively reported by Nelson Weekly last Tuesday. Nelson City councillors voted on the issue on Thursday with nine councillors supporting the move and three against it. The three dissenting votes were from councillors Matt Lawrey, Luke Acland and Brian McGurk. EASTER TRADING: Nelson has followed Tasman’s lead and will not allow Easter trading in the city. Councillors voted on the issue during Thursday’s full council meeting, with four voting to consult further with the community and Bill Dahlberg abstaining. Seven councillors, along with Mayor Rachel Reese, voted to keep the status quo. BEACH BUS: The council granted $15,000 to the Tahuna Beach Holiday Park to run a beach bus from the park to Tahuna Beach and then to i-Site in Nelson city and back. The bus will run every day for six weeks, with the exception of Christmas day, from 9am to 8pm. Fares will be $2 for adults and $1 for children.

I can't believe this, wasting the taxpayer's money. I personally know the person who designed the Trafalgar Centre, and when it was built it was made so if there was an earthquake it would be safe. 'Sport makers' recognised Simon Bloomberg
Special Olympics Life Member Lois Aitkenhead and the driving force behind Waimea College's successful volleyball programme Josh Ovsenek have been named as two of the region's top sport makers. The two dedicated sporting volunteers were recognised for their years of service, alongside Motueka soccer administrator James Monaghan, at Sport Tasman's ASB Sport Maker Breakfast held at Saxton Pavilion last Thursday. The ASB Sport Maker Breakfast is Sport Tasman’s way of thanking and celebrating outstanding volunteers within the community, with all volunteers nominated through Lotto New Zealand's Thank a Sport Maker campaign. Sport Tasman's Nigel Muir says Lois puts "her heart and soul into the Special Olympics movement and inspires everyone around her." He says the retired specialneeds teacher has been active in Special Olympics since the 1990s and is the Nelson chairperson and coordinator. "Under her leadership, Special Olympics Nelson has contin-

"The Sport Maker awards are one of my favourite days. We have so many amazing volunteers and these guys here this morning are just the tip of the iceberg." Top qualifiers Waimea Toi Toi, who went unbeaten on their way to the title, beat Stoke Nayland by 49 runs. The hosts bowled out the visitors for 221 in their pursuit of 270 for eight. Tom's innings stood out, as no other player could get past 50 on the day. Tom hit 16 fours and five sixes as he bludgeoned the Stoke-Nayland bowlers and raised his strike rate as his time at the crease went on. “Jubilee is known for being a bit green, but I thought it played really well and I got a lot of confidence early. “I always try to target back over the bowler's head as a place I can score.” He did ride his luck at times and struggled to score regularly during the 80s and 90s

15 NZ Masters hockey reps for region Club Champs loom Jacob Page

Nelson hockey has 15 players who have been selected to represent New Zealand in May next year at the biannual trans-Tasman hockey Challenge Series against Australia. All up, 13 New Zealand teams will do battle against Australia in Whangarei from May 2 to 6. Players will compete in a three test series across 35+, 40+, 45+, 50+, 55+ and 60+ men’s and women’s age groups Trials were held at North Harbour Stadium recently with over 350 players showing their wares across both trial days. In the Womens 35 grade, Nelson will be represented by Jay Sigley and Diane Webb who were both involved in the winning New Zealand team in Melbourne in 2015. In the Womens 40s grade, Karen Eden will be back representing her country along with first-time representative Jackie Day who only took up playing in goal again last year after a 10 year break. In the men’s grades, Jaron Steffens will be involved in his second endeavour with the New Zealand team after coming back with a bronze from the World Cup held earlier this year in Canberra. Gene Cooper and Mark Gibbons will once again be involved in the men’s 45 grade.
Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway fires back into action after Christmas with its Club Championship meeting on December 27. It is the last meeting for Shane Harwood to run the 1nz on his car, as he defends his national title in Palmerston North the following week. For many of the drivers, it will be the last meeting to get the car sorted before heading away for their respective New Zealand title meetings. Ian Burson will be travelling to Cromwell to compete for the Super Saloon Title. Ian is a strong chance for a podium finish while Mark Carey

They will be joined by new comer Craig Mant who has also been named as a non-travelling reserve in the team. Tim Brenton and Jimmy Mathews will be involved in the Men’s 60+
grade along with Gary Wilson also being a non-travelling reserve for the team. All the New Zealand players will now be involved in a busy four month training programme, which will also involve Nelson's younger High Performance players striving for places in the Capital Hockey age-group teams which will be selected early next year.The Master players will be helping out in a new mentoring programme set up recently at Nelson Hockey and will be wanting the young Nelson players to push themselves to achieve their goals in 2017.

He still plays in the Nelson Brass Band, has served as a Freemason for more than 70 years and volunteers for Arthritis NZ after developing two forms of arthritis.
Along with his partner Sue, Maurice leads an active life and part of it is volunteering at the Ngawhatu swimming pool, where he is a trained lifeguard. “But I only save the ladies,” he joked. Last week he and Sue spent two hours at Z petrol station in Halifax St, where he worked as a “community concierge” washing windows and greeting customers. He handed out orange tokens which his customers could use to vote for Arthritis NZ and help the charity receive cash from Z, through its Good in the Hood promotion. Maurice says he got relief from his treatment so wanted to give back, but he wasn’t sure if he’d be offered a job after his efforts. “Sue’s right into it and I just follow along, but when people respond you feel good.”
