Nelson’s roads need almost $5 million to bring them up to scratch after decades of underinvestment from previous councils. The situation was laid bare in

council’s recent 2018-28 Transport Asset Management Plan (AMP) which identified a $4.7 million backlog in road surfacing. Council’s manager infrastructure Alec Louverdis, says although there is a large backlog, the roads aren’t in terrible condition.

“In terms of why we haven’t maintained our roads; our roads aren’t at the point where they’re going to fall apart, we’re not at a place where we’re going to drive and come across a massive pot hole.” The degradation came from exposure to UV light along with heavy traffic flows.

“Yes, we’ve underfunded some of our roads, but we’re closing that gap.” The plan states that “if council want to catch up and keep up” it needs to spend $4.7 million in 2018/19 and then $700,000 and $600,000 in the two years following.

Council has decided to spread the backlog out over the next 10 years, spending $1.17 million each year. Alec says a huge part of the issue is that they need better data on the state of the roads, which is not

He says, in line with NZTA, they have been trying to “sweat” the assets to get the best life out of them. “But as more data has come up, there has been more money put into maintenance. “We’ve almost doubled what we are spending in renewing our assets.” Heavy vehicle traffic on Nelson’s key freight routes has been increasing over time and Alec says it is these vehicles, not cars, that cause damage to the roads. Heavy traffic is measured

on key roads around the city and is shown to have increased on Bolt Rd, Quarantine Rd, Pascoe St, Nayland Rd, Saxton Rd and Wildman Ave. Three options were presented to council to deal with the surface backlog as part of the Road Pavement and Surface Lifestyle Management Plan. - Maintain investment level plus allowance for network growth. - Reduce investment level by increasing the forecast useful life on chip-sealed surfaces - Increase investment level to include allowance for network growth plus ad-

ditional rehabilitation amounts. The transport report says that option two was chosen because it allowed for better data collection and modelling. This was in line with recommendations from NZTA that suggested Nelson extends the life of its roads by two years. CEO Pat Dougherty says the problem has been picked up before it becomes “endemic” and turns into something a lot more serious. Alec agrees and says: “We’ve done quite a bit of work, we’re just doing a lot more.”

Shark found on Tahuna Beach Lisa Trusler got a curious surprise when she and her daughter went for a walk along Tahunanui Beach on Sunday. A shark had washed up on the sand at the Back Beach, which was creating a small stir from onlookers. “It was pretty cool but was starting to smell by the time we got there,” Lisa says. She says that her 13-year-old daughter was “really excited”

when she first saw it and found it “fascinating”. However, now the reality had set in and she said her daughter would not swim at the beach any longer. Lisa says that it looked like the shark may have recently had a baby as it looked like it had a birth sack alongside it. The shark was about 1.5m long but it was not clear what sort of type it was.

Nelsonians are dreaming of hitting the bike tracks, the beach - as well as getting in some quality screen time these Christmas holidays. While many are trudging the pavements of the Central Business District looking for presents for their loved ones, others are hitting the keyboards hoping to nab the trendiest items on the Christmas wish list. Bikes, surfboards and TVs are at the top of that list for Nelson folk this festive season, accord-

ing to Trade Me’s annual list of top Christmas searches. Trade Me spokesperson Millie Silvester says the three items are the most searched for in the lead up to Christmas day. “We've seen almost 500 searches for bikes in the Nelson region, 160 hits for TVs and 100 searches for surfboards in the last week.” Nationally, Kiwis have purchased over 300,000 items on the Trade Me Marketplace in the last week. Millie says the most popular searches and purchases on the internet trading site have been trampolines, bikes, tents, PS4s, Lego, iPhone Xs, E-bikes, Nin-

tendo Switches, iPads and iPhone 7s. E-bikes are new to the list this Christmas with Millie saying they have seen a growing number of searches and sales for them, with over 2,000 onsite to purchase currently. “E-bikes have made huge inroads in New Zealand and they’ve transformed the way many Kiwis commute.” Meanwhile, Lego remains one of the long-running favourites with over 20,000 searches, proving it’s a popular item every Christmas. Three year course just the beginning for Shirley’s Te Reo journey Jonty Dine Reporter

Shirley Shepard is a Maori woman raised as a pakeha in a town of just three families. Shirley was brought up with little to no knowledge of her Maori ancestry, the traditions, customs or language of her people. Colleagues would refer to Shirley as Whaea, Maori for a mother figure. The 64-year-old would nod politely but now admits she had no idea what it meant. Spurred on by her son, Shirley eventually embraced her Maori-dom and enrolled in Te Reo classes at NMIT. She has just completed her third year and on Saturday received her Certificate in Foundation Maori Studies in front of friends and family at Wakatu Marae. Her language journey won’t stop after graduation as Shirley hopes to progress to the point she can converse fluently and confidently in Te Reo. “Now that I have started, I

Photo: Jonty Dine. will continue for as long as it takes.” As part of the course, Shirley has also been learning how to research ancestry which she plans to do in order to connect with her iwi. The course has opened up a new world for Shirley. “I have met amazing people

and gone to places in Nelson I didn’t even know existed. This is my first time to Wakatu Marae and I have lived here since 1979.” Shirley says the tutors at NMIT are passionate and knowledgeable about passing on tikanga. She encourages everyone,

Maori or not, to learn Te Reo Maori. “People should make an effort to learn the language because a lot of children do and you will find more and more young people able to speak it, and it is very hard to stand there and not know what’s being said.”

Gravesite defacer not guilty: The woman responsible for the defacing of gravesites at the Wakapuaka Cemetery in September has been found not guilty on the grounds of insanity. The 44-year-old woman, who cannot be named due to final name suppression, appeared in the Nelson District Court on Monday. Judge Richard Russell told the woman that the facts were concerning. “Flowers, mementoes and vases have been removed, in essence these are graves and the people who come to visit them have been severely distressed about what you have done.” Judge Russell made a compulsory treatment order under the Mental Health Act. Xmas tree comp comes to Presbyterian Support: It may not be traditional, but a Christmas tree decorated with Kiwi icons could help clinch the coveted Christmas tree trophy this season. Presbyterian Support in Nelson has become a quirky Christmas extravaganza as teams battle it out in the annual competition. Manager Trish Armstrong says the event ranks as a highlight on the calendar for staff, volunteers and members. The competition is people’s choice with every visitor to Presbyterian Support eligible to vote. Each group comes up with a theme and decorates a tree to fit that. Harekeke will look to defend its title after their beach-themed tree took out first place in 2017. Trish says there is no clear frontrunner at this stage for 2018. “I can’t tell, I have heard a lot of talk about the Kiwiana one, but we won’t know till we count the votes.”

Cotton On thief caught red-handed Locally Owned and Operated

A would-be thief was foiled after he left his wallet on the counter of the store he stole from. Channing Toiamoko Taueki-Rapata, 25, entered Cotton On just before 11am on November 21. He approached the counter supposedly intending to pay for two

t-shirts, but there was nobody to serve him. Defence lawyer Tagan Lyall says Taueki-Rapata then wandered around the store before becoming frustrated and leaving with the t-shirts. A staff member saw him leave with the shirts, valued at $24.99 each, and as they got back to the

counter, found the man’s wallet. They opened the wallet and found Taueki-Rapata’s driver’s licence, confirming that it was him who took the shirts. An associate of Taueki-Rapata came back into the shop a shorttime later looking for the wallet, but was told he would need to collect it from the police station.

Taueki-Rapata went to the police station the same morning to collect his wallet and the t-shirts were returned to Cotton On in a saleable condition. Judge Richard Russell convicted Taueki-Rapata of shoplifting and sentenced him to 50 hours community work. Judge Russell warned the man

of the dangers of continuing to steal, saying it was Taueki-Rapata’s third time appearing before the courts on similar matters this year. “A judge is going to get sick of you offending in this way, if you keep doing it someone’s going to pick you up and put you in jail. If you can’t pay for it, simply leave it alone.”

Santa brings sun for Christmas day The Nelson region looks like it will shrug off a few days of wet weather just in time for Christmas. MetService meteorologist Rob Kerr says that there is a complex low system that will start affecting the region from today and bring with it some showers. That will continue over the weekend but there was more uncertainty about where the low-pressure system would go. “As we get into Monday that ridge will come and bring a lovely day for Nelson.” Although there is a lot of weather between now and Santa’s arrival, looking ahead to Christmas Day, the forecast for the South Island looks promising, with westerlies bringing a bit of cloud and showers to the west, and warm, dry winds to the east. On Tuesday, Christmas Day, the sun will be shining. “Much of the country should have a good day. So the Christmas period looks to be getting off to a good start.”

If you feel like you’re still slogging your way up the Christmas-deadline hill, there’s some good news on the horizon with many special summer events and attractions beckoning. Nelson City Council Community Services Committee Chair, Gaile Noonan, says there’s no better place to be than Nelson over the summer months, and just in case you need more convincing, there’s a terrific line up of events planned to keep you entertained. “If you haven’t already seen the Summer Events guide, you can see what’s on offer on ItsOn.co.nz or grab a copy from the Nelson City Council Customer Services Photo Tim Cuff Centre. I have copies of the guide in my guestroom so my visitors can select what interests them. “One of the key fixtures just started, and one of my firm favourites, is the Summer Movies Al Fresco. The programme runs until 27 January and a chance to view a classic movie outside on a big screen in one of our beautiful recreational parks is an opportunity not to be missed.” This summer, screenings are in Nelson, Richmond, Tasman, Takaka, Stoke and Motueka. With the intention of making the movies more

accessible to a wider audience, some screenings will be shown with English subtitles turned on, and most are rated G with an emphasis on family content. Movies start at dusk (generally 9pm) although giant board games are available from 7:30pm, when the audience is encouraged to come along with a picnic and enjoy the park at sunset. Council ticks off projects at year's final meeting At the final full meeting of the year Nelson City Council approved several new measures. Kate Russell wraps up what you need to know. Council endorse scope of Southern Link/Rocks Rd project: Following the recommendation to council from the Regional Transport Committee earlier in December, councillors have endorsed the scope of the programme for the Nelson Southern Link/Rocks Rd walking and cycling project. Work will also be carried out to identify whether any enhancements can be made to Rocks Rd - this includes fasttracking work to identify if there are any short to medium term improvements the area, by mid2019. Changes to Gambling Policy adopted: Council has adopted the changes to Nelson’s Gambling Policy, including a reduced cap of 162 electronic gaming machines in the city. This will limit the number of electronic gaming machines at new venues to five rather than nine and includes the provision that new venues cannot be located in high deprivation areas. Council is required by law to review the policy every three

years and 50 submissions were received from the public on the proposed changes. Seafield Terrace storm repairs green lighted: After consulting with affected residents and considering the viability of several options, council will progress with the remediation of Seafield Terrace in Glenduan. This includes the construction of a six-metre wide rock revetment structure engineered to protect the road against 5-10 year storm events. Seafield Terrace and associated infrastructure services suffered considerable damage in the November 2017 and February 2018 storms.

Haulashore jetty to stay: Council has voted to retain the timber jetty on Haulashore Island for its landscape value - but it remains closed to vessels as it is not structurally sound. The jetty has sustained significant damage over the past few years and is not safe for vessels or the public to use. However, feedback from the community showed that even though it can’t be used by the public, it is a valued feature.

submissions from the community on a proposal to reduce the current 70kmh speed limit on Waimea Rd to 50kmh. This applies to a 1.3km section of road, from 240m south of Market Rd and 200m north of the Beatson Rd roundabout. The reasons for this proposal are to provide improved road safety on this section of Waimea Rd and a workable speed environment for the proposed new intersection of Princes Drive with Waimea Rd. Modellers Pond trial to continue: A trial at the Tahunanui

Modellers Pond will continue for a further five months at a cost of $130,000 to fully assess its effectiveness. The trial began in August to look at the ongoing problem of the growth of weed and algae that has plagued the pond for many years. The trial involves dosing the pond with Diatomix, which encourages diatom growth which then limits the nutrients available for the growth of other algae and weeds. It is believed the trial is making a significant difference and, while algae has continued to grow, it appears to be at far lower levels than at the same time in previous years, which indicates the Diatomix may be having a positive effect. Iwi and council working together: Council has agreed to the establishment of an advisory

group supported by iwi, involving governance representatives from council and iwi. For almost 20 years Council and iwi of Te Tau Ihu (Top of the South) have endeavoured to strengthen their relationship. In 2005 the council signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with iwi. Council is now undertaking a review of this relationship post Treaty Settlement. Assessment of Nelson’s housing capacity accepted: A recentlycompleted assessment of Nelson’s housing capacity, carried out under the National Policy Statement for Urban Development Capacity, was accepted by council last week. The report shows that council’s work to provide land and infrastructure for new housing is critical in preparing the city to keep up with housing demand over the next 30 years. The analysis provides council with meaningful data on the suitability of remaining land for housing growth and has enabled a futurefocussed approach to planning for housing capacity. The assessment was carried out as a collaboration between Nelson City and Tasman District Councils, to allow for a wider perspective on urban housing capacity.

Community papers top source of news health and wellbeing of communities in Aotearoa,” says Sir Bob. “Community papers provide channelled advocacy of important local issues in a way that isn’t mirrored simply by residents chatting on a community Facebook page. They also champion issues and stories that would escape the attention of the mainstream media.” The Community Newspaper Association of New Zealand has more than 80 independent newspapers associated with it. Its president Dave McKenzie says the results aren't surprising but are welcomed. "It's great research which supports what we see every day over the country. Independent newspapers are a trusted source of local knowledge." 2degrees CEO Stewart Sherriff says the research has provided interesting reading. “As a telco we’re deeply interested in how Kiwis communicate, and where they get their information from. The role of the community paper in informing, supporting and championing our communities is obviously something many Kiwis still hold dear.”

New Zealanders get more information about their town from the local community newspaper than any other source, according to new research. Commissioned as part of a 2degrees research project, the survey asked more than 2000 New Zealanders how they are communicating in their communities and the role technology plays in the way they connect. The results revealed that around a third of Kiwis rate local newspapers and magazines as the best source of local news, while online sources like community social media pages/chat groups lag behind on 23 per cent. Nelson Weekly is the only locallyowned newspaper in the city. The survey’s findings around community newspapers struck a chord with a former mayor Sir Bob Harvey who, after more than 27 years in local government, has witnessed first-hand the important role of community press in setting the local agenda. “I can’t overstate the importance of community papers and community journalism in ensuring the

Sealord scholarship winners announced Two lucky young Nelsonians have been awarded a financial boost for their tertiary education, thanks to a helping hand from Sealord. Every year, the company open applications to the families of staff, awarding up to $10,000 annually to a recipient, or split between several recipients, for tertiary fees, for up to four years. The idea is to give locals the opportunity to further themselves, while also recognising the good work that they do in the community Jemma Stephenson stood out for her voluntary conservation work and is now looking forward to taking up a three-year degree in geography at Victoria University. The opportunity to study is particularly rewarding for the 19-year-old, who had cancer treatment four years ago. This involved having five major operations and six months of chemotherapy. “During year 11, I was only at school half the time and chemotherapy really affected my concentration abilities,” she says. “Recovery was a long process and even after I finished treatment I still had fatigue issues through years 12 and 13 that affected my studies.” She says the scholarship is an amazing opportunity

Photo: Fiona Terry. to focus on her studies rather than stressing about financial pressures. “It’s also awesome that there are people other than my parents who believe in me enough to support me. “I’m so grateful for that.” Jemma’s dad Michael Stephenson is a forklift driver and general hand at Sealord, and has worked for the company since before Jemma was born. The other scholarship recipient is Limmaltey Hort, 19, otherwise known as Rosa, who has been volunteering at Nelson’s Hospice inpatient unit and plans to

study a Bachelor of Nursing at the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT) next year. “When I heard about my success I was over the moon,” she says. Rosa’s guardian, Phally Rhodes, is a fish processing specialist, who started working at Sealord in 2010. Sealord general manager group operations Doug Paulin says both candidates stood out for their generous community spirit as well as a clear commitment and drive to work in their chosen fields. “We had a number of

excellent scholarship applications this year, which always makes it tough to make the final call. “However, both Jemma and Rosa have done a significant amount of volunteer work in the community and put forward compelling cases on what they could give back by pursuing their career paths. They are both well-deserving recipients.” Seventeen family members of Sealord staff have extended their education with assistance from the Sealord scholarship programme since it began eight years ago.

That a cemetery was named after an admiral may be attributed to a quirky trophy. Nelson’s first cemetery between Collingwood and Shelbourne Streets was named Hallowell Cemetery after Admiral Sir Benjamin Hallowell,

Your Voice Our unknown assets: The Weekly article (Dec.12) “Unknown Assets,” reviews some of the unsaleable assets owned by Nelson council. Councils use unsaleable assets like dams or roads as the basis for borrowing. Nelson council has just received a very good credit rating from Standard and Poors that it can use for borrowing. But standard accounting practices do not apply with local government. Most council assets are liabilities. NCC has borrowed $100 million, using our homes as collateral. Nelson Matters Two big wins during Parliament’s last week concluded my year on a high note. They are Nelson issues but have national implications. The first win was getting my local Bill through Parliament authorising the Tasman District Council legal access over the DOC land for the Waimea Community Dam. This was the last issue to resolve to enable construction to get underway early next year. This $100m dam will be the largest to be built in NZ in over 20 years. The timing was tight with $43m in Government funding support that I previously helped secure, expiring this month. Everybody agrees that we have

to lift our game in managing fresh water and caring for our rivers. The Waimea River has been in trouble for decades because too much water is extracted in summer for irrigation, industry and town water supplies. The river is a bare trickle most summers and becomes heavily polluted with ugly algae. Neither New Zealand nor our region has an overall shortage of fresh water. We only use 2% of the total resource. The problems are in specific areas during summer droughts. The common sense answer is to store some of the huge surpluses of water from winter for summer use. The Waimea Community Dam will give us a healthy river that

we can swim, fish and kayak in. It will support growth of our important apple, wine, kiwifruit, berry and hop industries. It will also provide secure water for the thousands of new homes in Richmond, Mapua, Brightwater and Nelson South. My problem with the Green Party’s opposition is that their alternative of slashing water takes and converting the Waimea Plains to dry weather crops (whatever they are) is so impractical. I am also disappointed this will be the last water infrastructure project to get Government support with Labour cancelling the fund. Infrastructure is part of the answer to improving New Zealand’s water

The second win was the decision of the Court of Appeal to reject the claims against the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary and the national regulations I put in place in 2016 as Environment Minister for safe poison use. New Zealand has a massive problem with 25 million birds killed each year by predators like possums, rats and stoats. We’re not going to save New Zealand’s precious native birds unless we take a science-based approach to responsible use of poisons. Fake news reared its ugly head in both debates. Dam opponents produced flyers saying Brightwater would risk an eight metre high tidal wave despite

expert scientists and engineers rubbishing the claims. Poison opponents made dicks of themselves in dumping dead birds on the steps of Parliament, claiming they died of 1080 when autopsies showed they were roadkill or had been shot. These two significant decisions give me hope that rational arguments can win. My hope for 2019 is that good science and practical solutions might triumph more often in local, national and international politics. Best wishes for Christmas and the New Year.

CHRISTMAS AT NATURELAND: The kea at Natureland probably don’t celebrate Christmas, but they certainly love opening presents. December 25 is the only day the wildlife trust closes for the year, but with two staff members staying on to care for the animals they will ensure that they are all included in the festivities. Christmas crackers filled with peanuts and pohutukawa flowers are given to the keas, while the capuchins will enjoy puzzle logs and parcels. The rest of the animals will also get some special treatment. Natureland director Meg Rutledge says they like to spoil them a bit at this time of year. “I often bring in some ‘treat’ fruit that we don't normally feed out, toys and decorations. Port Nelson spend $29 million to fish in larger vessels Port Nelson is preparing to spend $29 million over the next 18 months on the redevelopment of the Main Wharf North berth, and purchase a new harbour tug, which will allow them to service larger vessels. Port Nelson, which is jointly owned by Nelson City Council and Tasman District Council, announced the capital expenditure. Chairman Phil Lough says it is a significant endorsement of the health of the region’s economy and will help ensure Port Nelson can meet the demands of larger vessels calling at the Port, as well as improving earthquake resilience for the region. “This Main Wharf North project will complete a rebuild programme that commenced in 1998 with the building of a 120-metre length of Main Wharf South, to which a further 60 metres was added in 2008.” A further 100 metres of wharf, the majority of which is almost 100 years old, will be rebuilt to a strength of 100 tonnes axle load which will then give Port Nelson a full, heavy-duty berth of 280 metres in length. 20 years of donations Hundreds of workers at a Nelson manufacturing plant are forgoing a Christmas ham from the boss in order to make a substantial donation to Nelson Tasman Hospice. Murray Sturgeon, managing director of Nelson Pine Industries, has this week presented the hospice with a pre-Christmas donation of $20,000, as he has done for the past 20 years. He says the management of the company, which is one of the world's largest producers of MDF, "took an executive decision" in the 1990s to donate the value of a staff gift to Hospice instead, as they considered it a worthy cause. "In the early days we had a couple of employees who went through the hospice and that's what prompted us to consider it. The staff and volunteers there do a fantastic job," Murray says. He says staff had always been supportive of the decision. About 230 people work in the Lower Queen St, Richmond, business - across manufacturing, marketing and administration. Nelson Pine Industries has also supported Nelson Tasman Hospice by making a significant "in kind" donation when supplying laminated veneer lumber (LVL), a highperformance engineered wood product, for use in the hospice's under-construction building in Suffolk Rd, Stoke. Hospice fundraising and marketing manager Paul McIntyre says it is a wonderful donation.

Jeweller Joel gets NZ’s top marks Locally Owned and Operated

Charles Anderson It has taken four years and 8000 hours of hard work, but Joel Whitwell is well on his way to forging a career as a manufacturing jeweller. He has recently come away with the top marks in the country for an apprentice after honing his trade at Benjamin Black Goldsmiths. “It was a really nice surprise,” says Joel. He first started working at the goldsmiths just after he graduated from NMIT. Owners Amy Cunningham and Ben Clark had seen Joel’s work in a local news article and thought that he should work for them. “We literally chased him down the street,” says Amy. But it wasn’t to be. Joel went to Auckland for three years, but then he and his partner grew tired of the big city and started looking around for other options. Joel called up Amy and asked if they

It was a match made in heaven when two hospitality businesses joined forces to create ‘Beachside Nelson Conference and Events Centre.’ The facility sits adjacent to Tahunanui’s tranquil sea and golden sands, making it an attractive location for special functions such as conferences, corporate events, training days, private parties, weddings and funerals. Carol Shirley (Gourmet Catering) and Lincoln Womersley (McCashin’s Brewery Kitchen and Bar) realised they would make a good team after successfully catering for a function together last year. “I first met Lincoln in 2009 when I bought into the Grape Escape Café,” says Carol. “At that time I gave all my catering clients to Lincoln who were just starting out in the catering business. After three years at The Grape Escape I sold out and retired, then after a year I got bored, so I decided to start back out on my own, very quietly.” Then in 2012 things amped up a notch and Carol found herself getting increasingly busier so she approached Lincoln to see if he would like to do bigger

functions together. They agreed to a proper share so that they each had their own businesses. “The first thing we did together was the 2017 business awards for around 430 people; that went really well and was really successful,” says Carol. “It was supposed to just be a one off thing; we thought we would just catch up, have a good time and do the chamber awards night together,” says Lincoln. “But we were like..hey..we’re besties!” The rest is history. Carol and Lincoln have since done other functions together such as the Cancer Society ball, the local Steampunk ball and the Brewer’s Guild Conference which ran for four days in September and catered for 430 people. “The business awards was just over 500 people, and we’ve also just quoted a conference for 2020 for 700 people. When this place came available I said to Lincoln, ‘do you want to expand and use this as a base?’” It was a no-brainer. The facility was then totally refurbished, and rebranded as ‘Beachside Conferences and Events Centre,’ with future plans to spruce up the out-

Lions Club get sick kids moving again Sara Hollyman

is one of the smaller donations the club has made for the year, “every donation is an important one”. Sue Smart received the karts on behalf of the children’s ward and says donations like them are invaluable. “It’s absolutely vital, DHBs like to spend their money on health needs but kids can’t manage without play, it’s like you reading a book, kids need toys to play with.” She says it helps the children feel safe in an otherwise hard environment. “It’s play, it’s what kids do, it’s as vital for children to be able to play and have things to play with and relate to as it is for adults to be able to phone their friend or read a book, that’s how they learn. Sue says anyone wanting to make donations need to contact the hospital first, as there are some items they can’t have for infection control reasons, such as soft toys.

Nelson Host Lions Club have made sick kids’ days a whole lot better with a donation of four cozy coupe ride-in cars to Nelson Hospital’s Paediatric Ward. Club President Holger Meissner says the idea was put forward by a member and they thought it was a great initiative. “We try every time to make good things for the children or the community … so we had a discussion with the hospital about which would be best.” He says they first thought about electric cars but eventually decided on the trikes as they are smaller and take up less space. “It’s perfect for the kids because it’s a little bit scary when they come to the hospital, they have things like blood tests, so they are more relaxed for everything.” Holger says, although this

Every few weeks the Nelson Weekly sits down to have lunch at Burger Culture with someone interesting doing something interesting. This week we speak to German and Olympic beach volleyball bronze medallist Axel Hagar about his time in Nelson. So, what brought you and your family to Nelson? We wanted to experience something very different and we wanted to spend time together. At home I am a bit of a weekend dad because I am on the road a lot. I felt like my boys need me more than just weekends. I had never been to New Zealand and we ran into a couple in Germany who did something similar in Nelson. They told us it was sunny, had good sport opportunities and wasn’t too crowded. We moved here on October 3 and enrolled our boys (Jako and Johann) at Nelson Intermediate School. What has been your impression of the region? It’s a lovely city with lots of really nice people. What we like the most is everyone is relaxed. Especially compared to Germany where there is always a lot of pressure. People here like to be

Nelson has been one of the best periods of my life. We rented a place on Bisley Ave so got to wake up to an ocean view every morning. We had to pinch ourselves. We are sad we have to leave, but are very grateful for all the wonderful people we have met and amazing experiences.

The Stoke Eagles will have extra reason to celebrate heading into the Christmas break, with the club taking out both division one softball finals on Saturday. The Eagles emphatically won both finals in crushing fashion. The men met the United Titans for the Travis Gibbs Memorial Trophy and made easy work of their opposition with a resounding 13-0 victory. A sloppy United pitch to get the final underway signaled a bad omen for the Titans. The Eagles would go on to dominate with bat and ball throughout the match, outclassing the Titans across the board. Titans coach Chris Vercoe says heat was certainly a factor in the final. “It was a warm day, we started off well, but the boys got a bit tired.” Chris says the better team won on the day. “They just had slightly better team, my boys gave it all, but I think our communication was just a bit off.” He says that hitting open spots in the field with the bat would be something to work on over Christmas. Chris is confident his side can avenge the loss in the post-Christmas season. “We’ll give it a crack.” In the women’s final, Stoke’s Purple Eagles hammered the United Hawks 14-1 to claim the Narelle Te Purei Memorial Trophy.

Christmas cheer served up on court Both the weather and the tennis were warm and welcoming at the inaugural XGen Christmas Tennis Tournament at the weekend. The entry requirements were a large serving of Christmas spirit and a minimum of a 25-year age difference between pairings. Plenty of chilled water, ice cream cones and Christmas cake was provided between matches to keep players hydrated, cool and energised. The atmosphere on court was jovial and the tennis was entertaining, with players' ages ranging from 7 to around 77 years of age. NBTA Regional Coordinator Ali McQuillan says the spirit of Christmas and sharing was evident. “It was a pleasure to see families and players across all ages enjoying the event, a perfect way to round off the year”. Peter Grigg Stoke Nayland maintained their unbeaten record in the NCA 110 over competition on Saturday while ACOB threaten as the major contender to the title. It was not always plain sailing for Stoke Nayland, but they eventually cruised to a comfortable victory over WTTU at Jubilee Park on Saturday. Their batting stuttered and stumbled at the start but a dynamic whirlwind from the irrepressible Dylan Egington ensured a defendable total. While wickets tumbled at the beginning of the innings, the beleaguered Kurt Pahl maintained his composure to steady the ship. Ricky Edwards displayed some nice touches in his composed knock, but it was Egington who gave the innings real momentum. Tidy left arm spinner Sam Halsey was the pick of the WTTU bowlers as he displayed control and aggression in a couple of dangerous spells. Although Mason Thelin and Daniel Endersby begun the run chase with vigour there was not much mettle to the middle and lower order. O’Neill followed up his two wickets with a handy 21 but

Darius Skeaping grabbed a couple, but it was Tim O’Connor and Mark Mekalick who created most of the damage. They claimed eight wickets between them to ensure that WTTU were never really in the hunt for the two hundred plus target. While Nelson College eked out a score which appeared defendable against ACOB at Ngawhatu, a couple of very good innings made a mockery of such thoughts. For the schoolboys, Finn Restieaux looked in exquisite touch as he collected three boundaries and four sixes in a

commanding knock. Left arm medium Sam Berkett was dangerous, and the inswinging Albie Murray chipped in with a couple of late wickets. A fine 109 run second wicket partnership between Greg Chitty and James Graham ensured that there were no palpitations for ACOB in the run chase. Chitty in particular was severe on any wayward bowling from the College lads and Graham provided a more steadying influence. Solid contributions from all the following batsmen allowed ACOB to reach the total with 19 overs still to be bowled in the match.

Tasman’s men are the national sevens champions. The country’s newest union ticked off another box in Tauranga yesterday when they took out the men’s title in a thrilling final against Counties Manukau. Previously Marlborough had won the inaugural national sevens crown in 1975, then repeated the effort in 1976, but this was the first win for the merged union, which was founded in 2006. The South Island champions began the weekend with three wins on Saturday, beating Wellington 24-10, Northland 40-7 and South Canterbury 26-7 to top Pool C. Counties Manukau and Waikato were also unbeaten heading into Sunday’s play-off matches, but it was a gritty Taranaki side that Tasman took on first, in the quarter-finals. The game looked to be slipping away from the Mako before a late surge levelled proceedings at 19-19. Extra time was required to find a winner and it was the experienced playmaker Jesse Pitman who broke the deadlock with a try after two minutes of overtime. In the semi-finals, Tasman met North Harbour and turned on a scintillating show of patterned, unstoppable sevens. They led 28-0 at halftime and went on to a 33-7 victory, dynamic winger Timoci Tavatavanawai scoring twice to take his tally to six tries for the weekend. In the other semi, five-time champions Counties Manukau downed Wellington 12-10 in a nail-biter to claim the other final berth.

Denying their northern rivals’ possession, they went to a 12-0 lead at halftime with tries to Pitman and Sam Chamberlain and James Lash conversion. The Steelers raised their game in the second half but staunch and sometimes desperate defence by the Mako held their dangerous rivals to one converted try, the final whistle signaling a 12-7 win and sparking wild celebrations among the Tasman contingent. Playmaker Lash was named tournament MVP at the ensuing prize-giving, but it could have gone to various members of the winning crew. Imposing forward Te Puoho Stephens, Tavatavanawai, Pitman, who ran the cutter alongside Lash, the blockbusting Michael Vaeno, Erenimo Tau and Chamberlain formed the basis of the starting line-up. Also in the Sam Gibbenscoached squad were Varani Komaisavai, Fletcher Matthews, Falaula Fotu Moala, Graham Urquart and Stein Schreiber.

Co-captain Lash said the side were determined to give a good account of themselves after being beaten in the 2017 final. “Last year we lost to Otago in the final so this year we wanted to go one better. We have put in a lot of hard work over the last few months and the boys - the family - have come out today and put in a huge performance all day, so it’s just awesome.” There was more silverware for the Tasman contingent to bring home with the Mako women picking up the Bowl title, meaning they finished ninth overall. They produced a stunning effort to overcome North Harbour 24-5 in the Bowl decider, underlining their growing potential as well. Skipper Jess Drummond was elated with the result. “We have a really young team and haven’t qualified for the nationals for a long time … so to have worked really hard to be here today, that’s what I am most proud of.” Manawatu took out the women’s Cup final, beating Waikato 12-7 in another close encounter.

The Dawnbreakers Fishing Club’s competition picked up a lot of speed over the last month with the snapper returning into the bay. They are still around in large numbers and some impressive catches have been entered by the club members. They will go off the bite shortly to spawn, so best to get out there while they are still in the mood. The location is not really important right now, they are everywhere, from the shallows to the deeper water in the middle of the bay. Get out as early (or late) as possible, the early morning and late evening hours provide the best fishing, especially when combined with a fast-running current. Use lots of burley and tie it to your anchor rope if fishing deeper waters. Be quiet, snapper are very shy fish and hate noise of any kind. Aluminium hulls have a tendency to resonate well under water so keep all walking, knocking and rattling to a minimum, especially in shallow water. Smaller boats have an advantage there, some of our club members even use jetskis. Stray lines and flasher rigs caught a lot of fish over the last weeks but small jigs and soft baits work well, too. When the snapper are hungry they will take almost any bait but squid, pilchards and shrimp tails seem to be favourites. There are still lots of sharks between the snapper but we get

Be careful if you decide to bring a large one (they grow up to 50lb) on board, they have sharp teeth and strong tails and can cause some serious damage. Stoke to All Blacks, Drummond Mitch Drummond always wanted to be an All Black and when he made his debut this year, that dream became a reality. Jonty Dine reports on the rise and rise of a local star.

When Mitch Drummond walked out in front of 50,000 fans at Ajinomoto Stadium in Tokyo, the livewire halfback thought back to his childhood. He thought back to the days when, as a teenager, he would walk down the Nelson College steps to play for the First XV. He thought back to playing as a young boy for Stoke at Greenmeadows, where he would wake up early every Saturday, pull on his boots and looking forward to playing the game he loved. But this evening, Nelson was 9000km and another world away. Here, Mitch was on the cusp of a dream. “As a young fellah all you ever want to do is play for the All Blacks.” That night, Mitch did just that and put his mark on a game that has been his life since leaving

school almost six years ago. “To tick that box in Japan is something I’ll remember forever.” But only a year earlier Mitch was on the opposite side of the field to the All Blacks – taking on New Zealand’s team at Twickenham as part of a Barbarian side. Just ten days after that, Mitch came off the bench for the All Blacks against a French XV in Lyon. “To say I’ve played against them and for them is pretty cool.” But Mitch says the experience only made him hungrier. Players were presented with an All Black number but not a test cap. “It definitely lit the fire inside to hopefully get back in that environment.” Mitch says he grew up around rugby and loved it since a young age. He led a star-studded college side which featured fellow All Black David Havili and Crusaders Mitch Hunt, and Quintin Strange. The side enjoyed a dream run which culminated in a UC Championship final after pipping Christchurch Boys in the semifinal. But he was also a talented crick-

eter, representing the Nelson Griffins. “I always loved my cricket, still really proud to be associated with the Stoke club and I try to get back for a game most summers.” Though due to the nature of the professional sporting season Mitch was forced to make a choice. “I made the call itself after school, I had to veer in one direction and I took the footy path.” After finishing school, Mitch decided to pursue his dream outside the region. He moved to Christchurch in 2013 with no contract prospects and started a building apprenticeship. He made an impact on the club footy scene and was called up to the Canterbury team later that

year and “the rest is history”. Mitch thrived in the Canterbury environment and soon became a regular fixture at halfback. He has racked up four NPC titles with the Red and Blacks and was named captain of the team in 2018. The native Nelsonian says while he never imagined playing for the province, he is proud to have represented Canterbury. “I’ll still always be a Nelson kid.” His roots in the region always causes a test of loyalties when the side meet the Mako. “Especially these days, some of my best mates play for that team. I also have got a lot of family that come to the games and I’m never sure who they are cheering for.” Mitch broke Mako hearts earlier this season knocking the highflying side out of the Mitre 10 Cup at Trafalgar Park. His 64th minute try guided Canterbury to a 21-16 win to book its spot in the final. “It was a funny sort of feeling, I don’t think I made to many friends that night,” he jokes. While Mitch has enjoyed a meteoric rise and won a slew of titles, it hasn’t all been a rosy ride.

He suffered a serious injury set back in 2016 which threatened to curtail his career. After just three Mitre 10 Cup games in, Mitch broke his leg at training. The setback saw him struggle to sit on the sidelines but ultimately helped him grow as a player and a person. “Once I pickled my bottom lip up and realized I wasn’t going to be playing, my mindset changed but it wasn’t easy.” He says it allowed him to see the game from a different perspective. “When you go from training every day to not being able to walk yourself to the toilet it changes everything, having gone through that I appreciate every time I get to play.” It also got him to think about life after rugby. “Mum keeps hounding me, nothing sticks out but something I am working with because footy is such a short part of our lives, it’s going to end at some stage some hopefully at end of career will have something to fall into.” He says the key will be to keep playing rugby for the same reason he did all those years ago when he was just a boy playing for Stoke Rugby Club. “I just love playing with my mates and it’s amazing what you can achieve when you enjoy what you’re doing.”
