Hundreds of assets, not known to belong to council, to cost millions Sara Hollyman Reporter

Nelson City Council is responsible for thousands of signs and more than 100 retaining walls

that it didn’t know it owned, many of which have been poorly maintained with some at a high risk of failure. The stark assessment means that millions more ratepayer dollars needs to be allocated to ensure

their upkeep. The full picture of council’s assets were laid bare after council undertook a review as part of its 2018-28 Transport Asset Management Plan (AMP). The review revealed that council

owns 3253 more road signs than the original 2910 that was estimated – a total of 6163. A detailed inspection of all council-owned retaining walls was carried out in 2007 and since then council has found another

Steve and Anita Parkins just started collecting lights. Before long they thought they should probably do something with them. So, a few years ago they began decorating their Monaco home with an array of colours. They are now one of the 12 displays across Nelson as part of the Light Up Nelson Christmas lights show. Their palm-infused landscape made a good natural canvas for the thousands of lights that Anita reckons took about 45 hours to install. “So, we are pretty tired now,” Anita says. Steve says that it’s all about giving a treat for the children that come around to have a look. Anita says they are still thinking they need more lights and may end up just adding to their installation over the years. “As long as the kids get a kick out of it,” says Steve. “That’s the main thing.” A map of all the displays is available in the Nelson App in the Christmas section, as well as the ability for the public to vote on their favourite. Assets not know to belong to council to cost millions FROM PAGE 1 went from $51m to $95m – a total of 419 walls. This has created a huge gap in the expected upkeep costs. Four retaining walls on Arapiki Rd were identified as being at high-risk of structural failure. But council’s group manager infrastructure, Alec Louverdis, says money has already been allocated to fix them over the next two years which falls within the required timeline of 2-5 years. Alec says he also doesn’t know why council didn’t know where all of their signs were, but the important thing going forward is that they do now. “I don’t know, I think if you’d asked me a similar question about how many dustpans do we have, we know that now and our drive to get better data is part of realising that do we know where

Supplying Quality Fresh Fish

all our signs are? “It could come across as negative that you didn’t know where 3000 signs were, but we do know now,” says Alec. The asset management plan showed that of council’s 6163 signs, 70 per cent of them were of very poor, poor or unknown condition. The level of damage could be anything from sun-fade to structural damage of the sign or its support. A council spokesperson says their contractor targeted replacing and repairing the very poor signs in 2016/17, so almost all of the 622 have now been dealt with. “Of the signs in poor condition, 92 are scheduled for repair in the next 12 weeks.” They say the rest will be dealt as an ongoing part of the normal maintenance programme. Alec says part of the issue with

dealing with retaining walls is that their ownership can be diffi cult to figure out. He says it’s not just a matter of black and white ownership, with some walls being on council property while others are on private property. “We look at one of the walls on Arapiki Rd and we can say this is ours; it’s on our land, it’s supporting our footpath, so ownership is very clear. “There are a number of retaining walls that are private, but are on road reserve, and there are a number of retaining walls that have been done as subdivisions and driveways.” Alec says up until now council haven’t had a good handle on their retaining wall assets but it’s an area they’re putting more resources into. “There are still some discussions to be had in terms of who put

that wall in when it was there to retain a driveway etc.” He says it’s not as though council haven’t been doing any work on their retaining walls “I mean, a large number of our retaining walls we know where they are. It was the ones where we were unclear on where they are in relation to road reserve. Do they feed private property, private driveways, right of ways etc. We’re getting to better grips on that.” The annual renewal cost of the walls is now $544,000 over the next 30 years instead of the $300-400,000 that is currently budgeted. He says it is essential to ensure the ongoing health of this “significant asset”. Alec says they now have a better idea of what needs to be done and where ownership lies, particularly around new subdivisions.

Police to target distracted drivers Nelson Police will be focussing on fighting driver distraction this December. Distracted drivers caused 36 fatal road crashes and 192 serious injury crashes in New Zealand last year. Senior Sergeant Scott Richardson says they still see far too many people using mobile phones while driving. With over 30 notices issued on Rocks Rd just last week, police say they will be doing spot and stop operations, where police spotters will be watching for people not wearing seatbelts, running lights and using mobile phones.

Last climb for Vertical Limits

Building to be replaced with new Briscoes, Rebel Sport site Kate Russell Reporter

kate@nelsonweekly.co.nz

The only indoor climbing wall in the Top of the South is closing for good next week. Vertical Limits on Vanguard St has been a Nelson icon since 2001, but next Saturday will mark its final day before the building is demolished to make way for a new retail development. Manager James Scoltock, who took over the business in 2016, says they will be going out with a bang with a free climbing session and get-together. Gibbons Holdings purchased the site last year and James was given one year’s notice to find a new home. But, after looking at “hundreds” of possibilities, he came to a dead end. “It’s been impossible. We needed something with height. There are just no suitable buildings in Nelson and building a new facility is just not feasible right now. It will happen, it’s just time.” James says he also sought

Vertical Limits currently has 400 regular climbers with at least 250 school children using the facility each week. James says they are currently the “busiest they have ever been” and the closure will be a huge loss to all users. “We have three-year-olds to 80-year-olds and people who have never climbed to competitors at world champs. “One kid even rang up the local radio station asking them to ‘save the wall’. It’s just a shame. The closest in-

door climbing wall now is in Christchurch.” James says when he took over the facility, the number one goal was to create a place where people felt welcome. “And that’s what it’s become - it’s like a massive big family. Heaps of people have put in so much effort to help out.” Vertical Limits’ last day will be 22 December, from 126pm. Past and present members are invited to come along, bring a plate and have a final climb.

Attack on tourists condemned

Staff reporter

Staff reporter

The man who appeared as Hana Kōkō at the Nelson Santa Parade has spoken out about the toll the saga has taken on him and his family. Rob Herewini, who appeared on Santa’s sleigh complete with red feather korowai, told the Marae programme that the last week has been revealing about the nature of some people in the community. Rob portrayed Hana Kōkō – the Māori equivalent of Santa Claus - after being asked by Community Arts to be part of the bicultural parade. “I was just quite happy to go and represent our culture because it was all about biculturalism, that Santa parade.” Rob works in the kura kaupapa at Victory School and volunteers for Community Artworks. “What they wanted was a different Santa from the normal Santa you see. I was going to represent the South Pacific, the Māori community.” However, the decision created a backlash, with many divided about whether it was appro-

Nelson mayor Rachel Reese says the attack on three tourists over the weekend is “totally unacceptable” and runs “completely against” the hospitality locals offer visitors to the region. Her comments come after a tourist suffered a broken nose and a fractured jaw after he and his companions were attacked and robbed by a group in Nelson’s CBD early on Sunday morning. A Nelson police detective sergeant Lex Bruning says the three men visiting from overseas were reportedly attacked by up to six people and had some personal items taken. Rachel says Nelson is, on the whole, a very safe place to visit and the actions of those who attacked the visitors cannot be tolerated. “We are very proud of our city and region and love sharing it with those who take the time to visit us. Please rest assured that a warm welcome is the norm and this terrible incident is the exception.” Nelson Police are appealing for information about the attack which happened in an alleyway from Bridge St to Montgomery car park at around 1.50am on Sunday. Detective sergeant Bruning says anyone with relevant information to contact Nelson police immediately by calling (03) 546 3840 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

The 'Big Give' for Christmas Kate Russell Reporter

kate@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Christmas can be a tough time of year for many Nelson families, but one local organisation is aiming to fix that. The Fifeshire Foundation is currently running their seventh ‘The Big Give’ Christmas appeal and will soon be handing out more than 300 Christmas packages to those in need. Recipients will get a $50 food voucher, Christmas food, gifts and toys, and Fifeshire Foundation manager Rachel Swarbrick says they work closely with social agencies to put it all together. Around 100 packages have already been made up, but they still need help to fill another 200. One thing they are encouraging people to donate this year is vouchers for department or clothing stores. “It gives them choice - even if it’s only $5 or $10.” Rachel says things like family experiences, such as passes to the swimming pool or board games, are also appreciated, as are nonperishable food items, cereals and Christmas treats. “One thing we are also in need of

are gifts for teenagers, especially boys. Deodorant, sports or outdoor stuff - things like that.” Rachel says as well as it being about giving, it is also an awareness campaign, highlighting Christmas is not an enjoyable time for everyone. “In Nelson, poverty is very well hidden. People question it, but there are a lot of families who are really struggling. This provides an outlet for the community to give back. “It’s about locals looking after locals.” She says the generosity of Nelsonians so far has been amazing. “Someone slipped $160 worth of Richmond Mall vouchers under the door of Fifeshire House the other day and someone has donated $2000 through our website.” You can donate goods to NBS and Ray White branches, The Giving Tree at Richmond Mall, directly to Fifeshire House, or some schools are also doing collections. Alternatively, you can make a donation online at fifeshirefoundation.co.nz Meanwhile, The Salvation Army say they are preparing to help at least 280 Nelson and Tasman families in need over the Christ-

First kaka chicks reared at Natureland Jonty Dine Reporter

Stay safe around downed power lines

jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz

A bird on the brink of extinction has been given a second chance at survival thanks to the efforts of local conservationists. The South Island kaka is native to the Top of the South and due to infrequent breeding and nest predation is on the endangered species list with fewer than 10,000 remaining. Natureland director Meg Rutledge has been at the forefront of the fight to keep the kaka alive. The Wildlife Trust has partnered with Project Janszoon for the past three years to help restore biodiversity to Abel Tasman National Park. Meg says, as kaka do not breed every year - some only once every three-seven years - , compounded with nest predation, the initiative is crucial for the species' long-term survival. “This summer we are hoping to rear up to 20 chicks to be released in Abel Tasman National Park in 2019.”

It doesn’t happen very often, but sometimes power lines can end up on the ground. If a car crashes into a pole, or if a tree falls onto power lines, the lines can break and fall down. By knowing what to do in emergencies such as this, you can keep yourself and others safe.

Victory School students Al Today Today and Mu Blung Thai Thul check out the kaka chicks. Photo: Jonty Dine. The first chicks of the summer season arrived at the park a fortnight ago and range from 17-22 days old. “They are doing extremely well and in one week they have doubled their weight.” Meg says they will continue this accelerated growth rate until they reach weaning age, which is usually at about threemonths-old. “We feed them six times a day, from early morning through

late evenings, which requires a real team effort to manage this.” Meg says a number of volunteer kaka carers are essential to the programme's success. “We are proud to be making a difference to endangered species populations this summer.” Visitors to Natureland can watch Meg and her team care for the kaka which are fed around 11am and 2pm each day.

If you come across power lines that have fallen to the ground you should: z

Stay well away from them and warn others to stay away too because the ground around the downed lines might be electrified

z

Call our fault line on 0800 508 100 to tell us where the downed lines are located

We will get someone there as quickly as possible to make the lines safe and repair them. The only people who should ever come near downed power lines are our experienced and trained line mechanics. They know the danger and they will only approach downed lines if they are sure it’s safe to do so.

What do you do if a power line comes down on a car you’re in? If you are in a car and the lines come down on top of your car you should: z

Stay in the car

z

Tell anyone who comes near to keep away too because the ground around the car might be electrified by the lines

z

Stay in the car until one of our line mechanics tells you it’s safe to get out

There are certain circumstances when staying in the car might not be safe e.g. if a fire starts in the car. If it is not safe to stay in the car and you have to get out you should: z

Jump from the open door of the car so that you are not touching the car and the ground at the same time (touching the ground and the car at the same time could give you a potentially fatal electric shock)

z

Stay on your feet and either shuffle or hop away from the car, keeping your feet close together until you are at least 10 metres or more away from the car. This might look a bit strange when you are doing it, but it could save your life because electricity can flow up one leg and down the other if you take a normal-sized step on electrified ground.

Sam Borall knows what it’s like to do it tough - that’s why she dedicates her time to helping others in need. The mum of four has recently won the Victory volunteer of the year award for the work she does at the Victory Community Centre. You’ll find her in the centre’s bustling kitchen five days a week with her son Jamal, putting together food packages for those who are struggling to make ends meet. The food is collected every day from Kai Rescue at the Nelson Environment Centre. Milk, bread, strawberries and asparagus were just some of the items donated last week. Sam sorts it all out, makes up the packages and puts extras out in the outdoor Kai Shed for other families to help themselves to. There are 200 families and individuals on the list to receive the packages, which are intended to only be a ‘top up’ to see people through until their next pay day.

Sam Borall has won the Victory volunteer of the year award. Photo: Kate Russell. Those on the list are allowed one package per week, with Sam aiming to make 6-10 per day, depending on what’s available. “The food is spread a bit more thinly these days, so first and foremost it’s a little bit of help for the Victory families,” she says. Sam has been volunteering at the centre for three years

now. Her partner and three sons also pitch in here and there with heavy lifting and outdoor work. She started off being roped in to help fold the Victory on the Move programme leaflets, then moved onto co-facilitating the Kai Shed operation. “I like talking to everyone

Summer in Nelson Tasman is officially here, with the launch of an action-packed programme of free or affordable events to keep locals and visitors entertained throughout the festive and holiday season. The summer events are a great way to highlight what the Nelson Tasman region has to offer, and a free guide was delivered to residents last week so they can note their calendars with an array of much-loved events. This Saturday the magical Lantern Celebration will be happening at the Centre of New Zealand. Bring along your homemade lantern (remember to use a battery-powered light to avoid fire risk) or grab a torch and the kids, Photo: Tim Cuff and head to the Botanic Reserve from 7pm. With a theme of Invention and Imagination, entertainment runs from 7-9pm on the ‘up’ track, with all kinds of creations, installations and music waiting to surprise and enchant walkers making their way up and at the top. From dark fall (9pm) the UV Light Show takes over to enhance the lantern procession on the ‘down’ track. Entertainment is also at Sir Stanley Whitehead Park from 7.30pm until dark fall. Summer Movies Al Fresco also begins this

weekend, with four pre-Christmas screenings, including Miracle on 34th Street, at the Botanical Reserve following the Lantern Celebration. The al fresco movie programme offers a musical, a drama, a dark comedy, - even a famous dog! Gather a group, a picnic, contemplate a blow-up couch and join others from 7:30pm to play giant board games before the movie begins. On the horizon, a New Year’s Eve countdown with three live bands and fireworks welcomes in 2019 in the city centre, followed in early January by Tahuna Summer Sounds: two Fridays of live music, giveaways and loads of interactive beach games and challenges. Plus there’s so much more throughout Nelson Tasman through to the end of March, with the annual Teddy Bears’ Picnic, live music from ska to jazz to chamber music, the Nelson Buskers Festival, market days, car and horse racing, International cricket, guided walks and beach carnival days all featured in this year’s programme to encourage the community to come together. Retailers oppose Bay Dreams carpark closure: Retailers have had the final say over car park closures for the Bay Dreams Festival at Trafalgar Park in early January. Nelson City Council has decided not to close the Wakatu Carpark, Wakatu Lane and Achilles Ave on the day of the festival after retailers told them they were severely affected by the same closure for September’s All Blacks match. The car park will now only be closed from 5.30pm on Friday, January 4 to 1am Saturday, January 5, instead of the full day closure that organisers of the Bay Dreams Festival originally proposed. Vigil for Grace Millane: Nelsonians are being asked to gather for a twilight vigil in honour of the British tourist who was killed in Auckland over the weekend. Tonight at the top of Trafalgar St at 7pm there will be a number of guest speakers, waiata, and local organisations involved. "We would like to highlight solidarity, promote zero tolerance for violence, and particularly remember women who have been victims," says organiser Sarah Kerby. Most dangerous road for speeding drivers: The most dangerous street in Nelson for speeding driver crashes has been revealed and Waimea Rd claims the title. A report shows that Waimea Rd had almost four times more speed-related crashes in the last five years than any other street in the city. The report showed that Waimea Rd had 18 speed-related crashes, seven of them serious, seven minor and four non-injury collisions. Second equal on the list were Bisley Ave, Toi Toi St and Vanguard St.

Santa has come to Bridge Street. Thanks to local businesses, the man in red will be in store next to Pocket Park from 12pm to 4pm most days. On Monday, Jenny Moser and Tamara Widmer, who were visiting from Switzerland, popped in to say hello. Simon Duffy of Uniquely Nelson says that there are also free apples and cherries along with free gift wrapping. “We had always planned to do this. It’s just about getting in the spirit of Christmas.” Head along to https://uniquelynelson.nz/ to find all the times that Santa is in store. Steady steps on the job ladder for Francis Charles Anderson Editor

charles@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Every morning the tables and chairs at the Beach Café in Tahunanui are studiously arranged by Francis Johnson. Every afternoon he puts them away. For Francis, who is on the autism spectrum, just being there is a great step forward. “I used to be scared of doing some things but I am getting more confident,” he says. “I can help my mum out at home more now.” Francis has come a long way. Being on the spectrum means that he faces different challenges to others wanting work. So, having the right support to help build confidence, and caring employers who know how to build skills, is essential. Since 2015, Francis had been meeting regularly with Work and Income to talk about steps he could take to help him on his journey. Having heard about a part-time job at the café and thinking that

this would be a good fit for him, Karen took Francis out to meet Neal and Dianne Bardsley at the café. Francis was very excited about the part-time job on offer. Neal looked carefully into what was needed to be able to employ Francis and to make it work for both of them. “We take our social responsibility seriously and always try to include people with a disability on our staff. “And, before I employ anyone, I do want to make sure that I understand the detail and what needs to be put in place to make the job a success,” he says. When Francis got the job, Karen linked him to Workbridge who, with the help of a Transition to Work Grant, helped him shop for the essentials he needed to start work. A Flexi-Wage Subsidy from Work and Income helped the business set aside extra time to give Francis the training needed and Neal set out clear job instructions in pictorial form, which made it easier for Francis to understand. With well-defined tasks, he has

Francis works around 15 hours a week, working a split morning and afternoon shift at the café. end of the day. According to Neal, he’s doing a

great job. “He’s keen, motivated, happy and achieving. Everything he has learned to do, he does well. We want to ensure we don’t put too much pressure on him and it’s great to see him develop,” he says. Francis has been part of the permanent staff for a year and a half now. He says he has a great boss. “They gave me a lot of time to learn. I like the physical work. It has made me stronger,” Francis says. Neal recommends any employer to take a similar step to him, but they need to make sure it is the right fit. “They have to ask themselves the question and whether they are going to put in the effort to make it work.”

Your Voice Thanks Russell St Community: I’ve been painting a small Chorus box at the bottom of Russell St and I would just like to thank the Russell St community for all your positive encouragement, people who stopped to chat, shouts of positivity from passing cars and especially to the lady who was kind enough to buy me a piece of cheesecake. What a great community you are. I hope my cheerfully bright colours are a reflection of your spirit and good cheer. Marilyn Andrews Why no public notification for new road?: What's going on at the council? Nelsonians have a right to know why the new road, which is going to intersect one of our busiest arterial routes, even requiring new traffic lights, was quite shockingly okayed without any public consultation. The reason given was ridiculous - the NCC say “public consulta-

tion is required when there are adverse significant adverse effects on the environment, but the various traffic reports have concluded the impacts of this road are no more than minor.” This is such obvious nonsense and so totally inaccurate that we need some explaining from the mayor and councillors 'No more than minor', on an already congested road? No more than minor, when new traffic lights have had to be put in, affecting all using that road? No more than minor, when all the traffic going to and fro to service a new, substantial lifestyle village is going to obviously be a considerable amount of traffic? We need an open investigation into why this resource consent sneaked through without public consultation. This is simply not okay. Morag Woode

editorial@nelsonweekly.co.nz facebook.com/nelsonweekly www.nelsonweekly.co.nz around Wakefield Quay, Haven Road, all the way around to the Port is just looking awesome. I haven’t walked around that area for a few months, and the improvement to the surface of the footpath around the Quay area is brilliant. Is a credit to the contractors who carried out this work. The gardens and layout all the way to the Port area look spectacular, you guys should feel very proud, I congratulate you. Di King City Christmas decorations go up: Really? They brought back the tea towels? I am mystified why they don't understand and respond to the feedback given. Lisa Lawrence Some new elements also. That’s fabulous, so long as they are Christmassy and not matching dish cloths to go with the tea towels. Let’s cheer this sad city up with some true Christmas cheer. Maybe even a Santa decoration amongst it all. Sandy Brown

Glad to have decorations up, thank you. Be lovely to have tinsel next year. Micaela Taylor

would be awesome to have a decent stadium, you know - then we could be making money rather than keep losing it... John Bush

Rocks Rd upgrade a ‘priority’: This is long overdue. We have been wasting our greatest asset. Now just to get rid of the cars. Cushla Vass

Nelson Santa Parade organisers apologise: So, the organisers made a HUGE mistake! MASSIVE infact! However, they have now apologised. They must be feeling pretty low with all the negative and abusive comments and, given that it's mostly volunteers who arrange the parade, they deserve thanks, not venom. Nobody died, Nelson! It was, without doubt, hugely disappointing for the little chiddlers to not see Santa but y'all need to let it go now! 'Tis the season to be jolly!! Happy Christmas, everyone!! Sally McMellon

Anything that's built along there will one day either be buried under tonnes of slipped hillside and/or wrecked by a storm surge. Alison Holmes Such a wasted area. It would only work if traffic had a better alternative, though. Russ Dannefaerd Again, another council puts priority to cycles and pedestrians! How many of each do you actually see using Rocks Rd compared to how many vehicles there are!!! Mike Roberts All Blacks got our tills ringing: Cool - it's almost like we should be doing a lot more of this kind of thing and it

Nelson Matters An inspiring part of my job at this time of year is attending our College prizegivings. I do not make every College, every year, due to clashes with each other and commitments in Parliament. But each year I come away buzzing with optimism for the future from the achievements of our young people and a deep respect for the work of our 600 teachers. The part I find most extraordinary with our schools of today is the diversity of their programmes. The opportunities stretch beyond the traditional academics and sports available to my generation. I see it in the

arts and musical talents, the sophistication of today’s trade and science programmes and in the huge range of sports. I love the way this diversity is allowing more of our young people to find the niche in which their talents can shine, but such achievement also takes a huge commitment from teachers. An example is the Future Problem Solving programme. Last year the Nelson College Junior team won the nationals and went on to come fourth in the international competition in the US. The success largely rests on the dedication of an amazing teacher, Sarah Watts.

Another example of such dedication is Emma Hunter at Nelson College for Girls and her specialist Bronte House programme for girls at risk. I mention Sarah and Emma because I know them personally through my own family and have seen the sacrifices they make to give their pupils so much. They are just two out of hundreds of teachers in our region who make an extraordinary commitment. We also need to acknowledge that our teachers today are carrying a more complicated mix of challenges. We have more students with special needs.

Technology is making our youth more connected but this is also adding problems. Mental health issues are on the rise throughout the western world. We are rightly getting more support into schools to assist with these problems, but I am continuously impressed by how far our teachers are going to help. This positive rave about our Nelson teachers is not intended to take sides in the current dispute with the Government over pay. I do believe teachers deserve a healthy increase but I am no fan of the disruption and waste that goes with strikes. My hope is that common sense prevails and

a practical deal is done. My message as the school years comes to an end is one of gratitude. The excellence our schools and colleges provides is part of Nelson’s success story. Nelson College, Nelson College for Girls, Nayland, Waimea and Garin have different strengths but each are stunning secondary schools. We can also take pride in our network of good primary and intermediate schools. We need to give our school boards, Principals and mostly our teachers, a strong message of encouragement and thanks. They do a great job. Advert.

Produced in small, individually numbered batches, Glenfiddich 18 Year Old combines a touch of fruity sweetness from the Spanish Oloroso wood and an oakiness from the traditional American casks. After being married in wooden tuns for at least three months, its rich, mellow flavours come together, creating an exceptionally smooth and remarkably deep single malt.

This exceptional Glenfiddich 21 Year Old single malt Scotch whisky is uniquely finished for up to four months in hand selected bourbon barrels that once contained rum from the Caribbean, infusing this rare whisky with a rich and indulgent toffee sweetness.

So popular that Glenfiddich couldn’t let it disappear – this is batch two of Winter Storm. The third entry in the Experimental Series, this sees the whisky finished in French-oak ice-wine casks from Canada, adding in layers of sweetness and spice, as well as a stack of candied frut. The first edition flew off the shelves, so don’t delay on number two.

20 of the whisky industry’s most exceptional minds came together to create this truly unique, pioneering single malt expression. With its deep golden hue, Project XX embodies the warm, fruity character of a classic Glenfiddich whisky with hints of apple blossom, summer fruits and ripe pear.

Weekly reporter awarded top journalism prize Nelson Weekly sports reporter Jonty Dine has been named the Provincial Sports Reporter of the Year at the prestigious TP McLean Sports Journalism Awards. The awards, held in Auckland last week, brought together the best and brightest in the field from across print, digital, television and radio. Jonty, who has been with the Weekly and the Nelson App since March, brought home the top award for community and provincial publications. His work ranged from a story on how concussion had ended the playing career of a Mako star to how junior sports teams were amending their rules to better fit with changing philosophies in education. Jonty says he has thoroughly enjoyed covering sport in Nelson this year and getting to know some truly world class athletes the region continues to produce. “It has been a privilege to tell their stories.” Weekly editor Charles Anderson says that the award recognises the great work that Jonty has been putting into the sports community every week. “He is on the ground, out there telling stories that otherwise would slip by. He has been doing a fantastic job of covering a vast array of diverse sport that really sum up what the region is all about.”

See instore for details.

Charles says the exciting thing is that Jonty has a lot more potential and Nelson Weekly Ltd plans to ensure that sport coverage increases in the newspaper and in the Nelson App in the new year and beyond. “We are looking forward to seeing what Jonty can do.” The award caps off a big year for the city’s only locally-owned newspaper. In June it won two top prizes at the Community Newspaper Association of New Zealand Awards and in November it won the award for clever business at the Nelson Tasman Chamber of Commerce Business Awards.

Lantern celebration this weekend The Nelson sky will be lit up this Saturday night for the annual lantern celebration at the Centre of New Zealand. The theme for this year is ‘invention and imagination’ and locals are encouraged to bring along their homemade lanterns. The event will kick off at 7pm at the Botanic Reserve with people making their way up

the hill to the Centre of New Zealand. Along the track, there will inventive installations and imaginative performances including a UV light show. At the top of the hill there will be entertainment and face painting before people make their way back down the trail. Back down at the Botanic Reserve there will be an Al

Fresco summer movie to enjoy at 9:30pm, ‘Miracle on 34th Street’. People attending are encouraged to bring a picnic, light-source and warm clothing. Children under 13 must be supervised by an adult. If wet, the event will be rescheduled to Sunday, 16 December.

$550 CARDS FOR PM: It was a rainy day when Clifton Terrace School students Hannah and Ben decided to sit down and draw some Christmas cards. The New Zealand Prime Minister had put the call out to children across the country to design her some cards to send around. So, they got to work, doing up their best illustrations. Then the letter came in the mail with an official letterhead from Jacinda Ardern. Both their works had been chosen – one of only four in the whole country. Hannah says the most exciting thing is that their card might make its way to the Queen. Photo: Charles Anderson.

Saul Parkinson left a job at a telecommunications company in Auckland to relocate his wife and kids so he could learn how to make fine furniture. “I just picked up woodworking as a hobby and then found this school.” He did an introductory course in 2015 at the Centre for Fine Woodworking and ever since then thought it would be quite nice to do the full year. “It took that long to organise our lives to make that change. I just really enjoyed it and was at a life stage – working for almost 20 years and wanted to do something different.” He is one of the students at the centre who are finishing their eight-month course – learning from some of the best around at its location close to Glenduan. Their work will be exhibited this week at Refinery Artspace. “It’s been fantastic to learn from the quality of tutors that we have had.” Saul says that it had been

Eliot Brand made the trip from Australia’s Blue Mountains for the course. “Like a lot of us, it fitted in a time in our lives where we could take the time,” he says. “I had a job finish up and something was telling me ‘go now’.” He looked around and found the centre. “I’ve really enjoyed it. It’s been pretty intense, but it’s

special.” Josephine Jelicich knew about the course for quite a while - from when she went to arts school. “We had a really good workshop in art school and I started getting really into it, but then it was time to leave and I felt like I was only getting started.” She tried to teach herself but says it’s almost like a “secret world” which requires specialist teaching. She says the Centre of Fine

Woodworking is the only school just dedicated to furniture and where you don’t have to move somewhere for three years. Now she has a job as a technician in Auckland that she is going to, but hopes to have her own space one day where she can “potter”. The trio’s work is all on display at the Refinery Artspace on Halifax St from Friday, December 14, until January 12.

Saul celebrates top brass award Locally Owned and Operated

Charles Anderson

Saul Gibney nearly didn’t go to Nelson City Brass’s end of year dinner, but it’s just as well he did. The solo cornetist, who has played brass instruments for 20 years, was awarded the Player of the Year. “It was a really nice surprise,” says Saul, who first picked up the instrument as a young student in

Nelson. When he moved back to the city several years ago, he joined up with Nelson City Brass. “What I enjoy about the band is that I have been lots of places with it, to contests and competitions and made lots of friends. It’s a real community. The band has been a family.” Saul says the band has gone from strength to strength under the

leadership of Nigel Weeks. “It’s been a massive couple of years since Nigel came aboard,” Saul says. It went from being in the ‘Cgrade’ in competitions to winning it three months later. Then it won the competition again the following year. Then the band was promoted to ‘B-grade’ and almost won the competition there, as well.

“Nigel is just a great conductor and knows how to get the most out of people. It was one of the main reasons I re-joined the band.” Saul says he loves the versatility of brass – playing everything from pop, jazz, orchestral and ska music. “For people who haven’t heard a brass band before it really

Tasman Utd’s dogged defence delivers draw Jonty Dine

Racers set off during the swim leg of the Nelson Triathlon on Sunday. Photo: Pete Marshall.

Squance runs away with triathlon win Peter Gibbs Fresh from a silver medal at the National Triathlon Championships a week before, Hayden Squance drew away from the field in the first few strokes of the 750m swim and was never challenged over the 17km bike and 5km run of the Nelson Tri Club's race on Sunday. Renee Hunt backed up her win from the club's last event to finish on top of the women's field. A horrific crash in a club bike race in September had Squance in doubt for this season, but with his performances in the past weeks he's shown that he's

coming back as strong as ever. Squance finished in just under an hour, but it was nearly nine more minutes before Tim Robinson crossed the finish line, three seconds ahead of a determined Jon Linyard. Close behind was Brendon Hughes, followed by a surprisingly fresh-looking Eric Wylde, who is still recovering from a strong performance in the IronMaori half ironman the weekend before. Hunt was next, placing sixth. having a much easier win than last time at Rabbit Island and finishing more than two minutes ahead of Carys Coleman. Lorraine Mellors was a further

minute back, after a tussle with Carol Cooper, who was coming back from a long layoff. Only four seconds separated the pair at the finish. In the duathlon option, a 2km run replaced the opening swim. Mitchell Cooper took the win ahead of very sharp looking 70+ competitors Ian Shapcott, over from Marlborough, and Simon Biss. The short triathlon was won by Megan Coleman from Kate Kempthorne, while in the short duathlon, Rebecca Malcolm came home ahead of Charlotte Tappenden. Full results at nelsontriclub. co.nz.

SportS CRICKET: Central Stags skipper Greg Hay brought up his second first-class double century last week. The Waimea Toi Toi opener was dismissed for 226 during the Stags Plunket Shield clash with Otago in Alexandra. Hay hit 26 boundaries during his 461-ball stint at the crease. His total surpasses the 202 he scored last summer as his highest first-class score. Hay sits second on the run scoring charts after three rounds with an average of 65.75. The Stags went on to win by an innings and 84 runs. The side’s next assignment will be at Saxton Oval, starting this Friday against Wellington. BOWLS: Several close contests were played out at the Stoke Bowls championships on Saturday. In the women's pairs final Elena Ulugia and Janis Reynolds edged Kath Newth and Carolyn Keehan 15-14. The pair booked its spot in the final after defeating Barbara Thomason and Christine Hanton 18-8. In the men’s singles final John Haddock enjoyed a comfortable win over Kevin Gledhill 21-13. SEVENS: Tasman sevens star Andrew Knewstubb continues to shine on the world stage. After being named player of the tournament at the previous week’s successful Dubai sevens tournament, the Kahurangi flyer contributed three tries and nine conversions for the New Zealand sevens side during the second leg of the world circuit in Cape Town at the weekend. New Zealand finished fourth in South Africa.

Dream world

She is still only 17-yearsold, but Amelia Abbott is already part of New Zealand sporting history after winning bronze at the FIFA U17 World Cup. Reporter Jonty Dine talks to her about the team's dream run.

Walking through the tunnel of Uruguay’s Estadio Charrua, Amelia Abbott’s body was filled with nerves. She could hear the thunder of the crowd. She could feel the excitement. It was early in the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup and the Young Football Ferns were playing the hosts, Uruguay. As Amelia emerged from the tunnel, she was greeted by thousands of screaming fans. It was the largest crowd she had played in front of. But most weren’t cheering for her team. Kiwi fans were scattered amid the sea of South Americans but made their voices heard. When

the whistle went, she felt the weight of her country behind her. “It spurred a new want and energy that I haven’t had,” she says, now back home in Nelson. The Kiwis played six matches over 18 gruelling days at the World Cup. The demanding schedule took its toll on Amelia’s body but her desire to make New Zealand proud saw her push through the pain. As she thought about her friends watching from the other side of the world it gave her the extra surge she needed. New Zealand would go on to upset the hosts 2-1 after opening the tournament with a stunning 1-0 win over Finland. As they continued to progress it became clear this New Zealand side were not there to make up the numbers, they were there to make history. “We wanted to show the footballing world what our team was about,” Amelia says.

Round 1 www.nzfootball.co.nz

After stumbling against Ghana, the Kiwis recovered to knock over Japan and Canada to claim third. The motivation for the players remained clear throughout, Amelia says. “I wanted to succeed for the girls by my side and all those who support us, for New Zealand.” She says the spirit of the side was incredible. It was an emotionally and physically-draining experience for Amelia as between the moments of utter joy were times of pain and exhaustion, feelings which were shared by all 21 members of the squad, she says. “After each match we won, we were overwhelmed.” However, Amelia says throughout the tour the team stayed positive and focused. “We were sure to make the most of the moment, it was a special feeling, a team spirit like no other I’ve experienced.” She says, each member of the

squad has their own special spark. “There was always lots of laughter, singing and fun. The team vibe was so much fun, we all just enjoyed the time we had together, and are already missing it, hopefully a reunion will happen in the near future.” The midfielder started her football career at ‘first kicks’ at Saxton Fields when she was just five years old. “My parents say I was always kicking a ball around and wanted to start playing shortly after I could walk.” Just over a decade later and she would net her side’s opening goal in the quarter final of the U17 World Cup, as New Zealand stunned Japan with a 4-3 penalty shoot-out win to set up a semi-final showdown with Spain. Amelia scored in the 17th minute after a well-executed set move. “My dad has always told me to trust my instincts, my body just took over and it seems training and repetition paid off as all I wanted was to get the ball in the net, so I just hit it.” She says she knew the opportunity for a shot was coming with a right-hand corner. “I decided to just not overthink

anything as all the girls had a job for this set piece, a job I trusted they would all complete, so I guess I also had to complete mine.” Amelia thundered the ball to the left of the despairing Japanese keeper with a powerful right foot punt from the penalty arc. “The feeling that came after was one I can’t explain, surreal, a moment I will always treasure.” As a cherry on top, it was nominated for the tournament’s top goal. Next up Amelia says she plans to return to Nelson College for Girls in 2019 for year 13. "I might look at giving under 20s a crack, so definitely want to keep up training and playing to let it see where it takes me." Amelia says the experience is not one she will forget in a hurry. “Friendships and memories have been made for life.” Football Ferns’ dream run: Won 1-0 vs Finland Won 2-1 vs Uruguay Lost 2-0 vs Ghana Drew 1-1 vs Japan (quarter final) Lost 2-0 vs Spain (semi-final) Won 2-1 vs Canada (play-off for third)

Tasman Thunder beat Greymouth Grizzlies Jody Scott

The Tasman Thunder cruised to a stock car teams win over the Greymouth Grizzlies, but that was the only highlight for the lo-

cal drivers as the other three titles went south to Christchurch in an eventful final meeting before Christmas. The Thunder’s win wasn’t easy with Levi Collier not making

it out of the pits and Keightley Teece left stranded in turn three on the first lap with both axles broken. However, the early lead taken by John Everett was never challenged as Hamish Carter and Dylan Clarke took to the Greymouth drivers. The Super Stocks saw the return of Nick Fowler piloting the Harwood machine while Ian Clayworth jumped into the Trevor Lineham car after Trevor suffered a hand injury in the opening heat. The night was dominated by Asher Rees (who won his NZ stock car title here in 2015) winning all three heats showing he will be at short odds at the New Zealand title and GP here in Nelson in January. Brad Neiman had led the final heat but an innocuous hit by Rees to take the lead in the final corner saw Neiman slam the wall and suffer a back injury. The Stock cars lined up with nearly 25 cars from Christchurch, Blenheim, Greymouth and Nelson. The opening race went the way of Keightley Teece with his newly-replaced axles, but he found trouble in heat two, getting spun by a Christchurch car. The rest of the meeting

Photo: Devon Stove/Imagepress. saw him chase and hit any 'C' car he could find which might make it harder later in the year when he defends his South Island title there in January. It was a consistent drive from 991c Harley Robb take out the club title from Blenheim’s 77e Scott Alexander and his older brother 191gm Dylan Robb representing Greymouth. The South Island Street Stock title was an upper South Island affair with a fleet of Christchurch cars coming up, along with a smattering of Greymouth and Blenheim cars to make two qualifying groups. It was more points racing to make the final group, but a good number of locals made the final group with one lone Blenheim and Greymouth car making the cut. Ryan Musgrove won the first qualifying heat but found plenty of attention in the finals as

the block cars held up the local speedsters. A few tangles amongst the local cars didn’t help their cause as they were out-paced by the Canterbury cars. Shannon Marr was left parked on the wall in heat two as the racing got quicker. In the end it was a Christchurch podium with NZ GP champion John Leslie winning his first South Island title from Daniel McNally and Dave McSherry. The Production saloons ran round two of their club champs with a huge field of visiting drivers and, once again, it was two drivers from Canterbury who stole the show. Matt Sherlock won the feature from David Filius with a huge drive by Pam Nixon to come home in third. Sherlock leads the title race but will need to return for round three to claim the trophy.

Hallowell Cemetery That a cemetery was named after an admiral may be attributed to a quirky trophy. Nelson’s first cemetery between Collingwood and Shelbourne Streets was named Hallowell Cemetery after Admiral Sir

Benjamin Hallowell, one of Nelson’s Captains. After the Battle of the Nile, the hearty, giant Canadian fashioned a coffin from the mainmast of the French man-o-war ‘L’Orient’ and presented it to Horatio Nelson who usually kept it behind his chair.

Athletic College Old Boys had its first win of the season with a comfortable victory over Nelson College in round six of the TPL on Saturday. Openers David Zohrab and James Graham ensured the Old Boys’ innings had a nice launching pad against Nelson College 1st XI at the Botanics. Graham was the aggressor in the 77-run opening stand and was obviously disappointed when he holed out to long off when he appeared to have the attack at his mercy. After a scratchy start, skipper Ben Gully added further misery to the schoolboys as he was joined by the Josh Simpson in a flamboyant attack that ensured a respectable total. Opening bowler Jarrod McKay was a bit too full early on but pulled his length back in his second spell to finish the top wicket taker. In response, College never really looked likely as wickets fell too frequently and the run rate got out of hand relatively quickly.
