How is it judged?

Fifty per cent of the judging is by public vote and the other 50 per cent is by the judges. We don’t know the full judging criteria but I know that you do get judged off your social media posts for sponsors and fundraising for charity.

What are your other passions?

I am super passionate about business and I am just about to start a commerce degree majoring in marketing at NMIT. I hope that one day I can start up my own business that also contributes to society in a positive way.

Last year I was lucky enough to get selected for a future financiers delegation through crimson education, with ten other young adults from Australia and New Zealand. We went to America to tour Ivy League colleges and meet entrepreneurs who are connected to New Zealand.

There has been some criticism of beauty pageants over recent years.

Do you have a view either way about their relevance?

I believe Miss Universe is more than just a beauty pageant. There is a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes, like making your own charity events, sending reports to the judges, interacting professionally with managers and gaining sponsorship. It is honestly a lot of work but it’s rewarding.

Q: Congratulations on becoming a top 20 finalist for Miss New Zealand.

Why did you enter this competition?

What have been some of the highlights of your journey in this competition so far?

A: Thank you so much! The reason I entered this pageant was because I have always wanted to be the type of person who can make positive changes to the world and influence people in a good way. Something that really excited me about the pageant was that you get to work with charities, especially Variety - The Children’s Charity. I believe doing stuff like this is very fulfilling.

It sounds cliché but I have learnt so much about myself during this pageant. Going to Thailand for the retreat was super eye opening - seeing people who live off very little and are probably the happiest people that you’d ever meet. Also, I believe this pageant brought me to a group of passionate and super motivated girls with similar interests that could potentially be lifelong friends. They have already helped me through a lot.

If you were to win, do you go on to compete in the Miss Universe pageant?

Yes, I would. I think it would be amazing to represent Aotearoa on a global stage and show the world how amazing our country is.

As I am half Maori too, I think it would also be great to represent my iwi on that global stage.

Emma: I don’t stick to one particular style but I love anything bright, fluffy, floral and feathery with pom poms or tassels on it.

Emma: I’m wearing my new faux leather pants and denim bag from Suki Lala in Richmond, my denim jacket is from Australia. Every wardrobe clean out this is the first piece on the ‘clothing bin pile,’ but for some reason I just can’t part with it. Thank goodness double denim is in right now! My shoes were on sale from The ICONIC online, I’m wearing ‘Life Matters Heartbeat Earrings’ by Alesha Kerry Collections.

These earrings were created to promote suicide awareness. And lastly, my top is an item from a clothing library that I have with a couple of close girlfriends, we all borrow each other’s clothes to save buying new clothes all the time.

EMMA: I love mum blogger Rachelle Rowlings-her style is super fun, colourful and she always has great shoes! I also love Gigi Hadid (who doesn’t) and of course the divine Marilyn Monroe. As she said, “your clothes should be tight enough to show you’re a woman but loose enough to show you’re a lady.” Love it.

What is your approach to shopping?

Do you think things through or impulse buy?

NICKI: Occasionally impulse, but mostly I’m a complete bore to go shopping with. I do buy, but thoughtfully.

EMMA: I’m super impulsive. I feel like the world might end if I don’t quickly buy that sale item. And if I’m strong enough to resist then I will lie awake in bed thinking about it for a week.

The sight of a well-puttogether steampunk man gladdens Robyn Wilks’ heart.

A

“ DRESS-UP TIME Robyn Wilks says steampunk is like being a kid again.

pair of tailored trousers, satin waistcoat, gold fob watch, every whisker carefully crafted into place — ah, thank you, God,” Robyn says. “There’s not a speck of dandruff or a Warehouse jacket to be seen. When you’re used to seeing good old Kiwi men in their stubbies it’s really refreshing.”

Robyn is one of Nelson’s steampunk enthusiasts.

She first discovered it about six years ago, and helped form the local Hickety Pik Southern Steamers group.

“I saw Steampunk in a magazine and had to ask my daughter what it was,” Robyn says. “I’ve always been interested in the history of costume and fashion. Well, that was the end of me.”

Robyn says steampunk is “like playing at being British posh, but taking the piss at the same time.”

For the uninitiated, a broader definition describes steampunk as a world based on imagining inventions the Victorians might have created for the modern world. It’s both old-fashioned and futuristic. It began with science fiction novels (some give the example of machines such as those in the writing of HG Wells and Jules Verne) and now extends to fashion, art, engineering, music, sport and - for some - a way of life.

“A lot of the guys love it because they can invent crazy things, steampunk bikes, any kind of machinery.” In fact, the Oamaru crowd say steampunk started in New Zealand with the invention of an exhibition piece beer mug - a pewter mug with faux brass piping, various strange cylinders, and what could be a steam dial and ruby glowlight.

“If you can’t imagine, you’re pretty earthbound, aren’t you?”

Lindsay, a shuttle service operator by day, says he is not a sewer but can do enough to adapt clothing to steampunk style. “I can sew things on,” he says. “I probably rivet more than anything else.”

Robyn, whose steampunk name is Matron, says the steampunk world gives the imagination free range.

Oamaru, with its neoclassical carved limestone buildings from Victorian times, is New Zealand’s true home of steampunk. The first steampunk fashion show and gala ball was held there in 2009. It’s now a five day festival that includes

Steampunk appeals to different people for different reasons, Robyn says.

“I’ve been a semi-professional model maker, making anything from Star Wars ships to figurines. It also gives rein to his love of theatre.

Local group Hickety Pik Southern Steamers, named after a rebellious 1900s British regiment fighting in New Zealand, has a loose membership with numbers ranging from a dozen up to about 60.

Robyn, 67, joined a group of 10 keen Nelson and Tasman steampunkers on a trip to Oamaru at Queen’s Birthday weekend for the annual Steampunk NZ festival.

This year was the first that Robyn could attend, after needing two knee replacements. She says it was “like walking into a dream world”. “Just to be able to meet people down the street who look like you.”

Lindsay Thompson, or Captain Mortlake of the Southern Dirigibles as he is known in steampunk circles, says he got into steampunk after a lifelong interest in science fiction (“since preschool”), notably with a love for Gerry Anderson’s Thunderbirds.

Robyn wears steampunk attire wherever she goes. Her mobility scooter is similarly tricked out. People no longer look twice when she enters her local cafe, and she’s never once had a negative word directed to her about her dress.

“You can go anywhere and do anything. You’re a time traveller,” she says. “It’s like being a kid in your dress-up box. Why should the posh people have all the fun? It’s almost like a salute to the Queen with your fingers up at the same time.”

Pamela White is part of a group that organised a highly successful steampunk-themed fundraiser for Nelson Tasman Hospice last year and the group is putting on a similar event later this month (August 31). Last year’s event raised about $50,000.

“We just wanted to do something that hadn’t really been done in Nelson. It was quite quirky,” she says, of choosing the theme.

“People do really embrace it. And the great things is there’s just so much you can do with the theme. Your imagination is really the limit.”

Dreaming of

‘the home for the future’

he ‘home of the future’ belongs in a shipping container.

At least to local businesspeople Bernard Mager and Jan Wilkinson who are the brains behind Nelson-based Smartway Homes, which specialises in building homes out of shipping containers.

“From my point of view, I had kids who couldn’t afford houses and who

Bernard says a house should be built to suit the people who live in it, not just something you buy off a brochure.

He designs the exterior of the home; the layout depends on the shape of the section, whether it’s up a hill or on the flat, and the view. “Our clients choose the shape of the home; we can design a container mansion using as few or as many containers as people want.”

“Our container houses are incredibly resilient, earthquake proof, water and storm proof; ideal for adverse weather conditions. Bernard had a brilliant concept; the homes are cheap but very posh,” says Jan.

In Auckland and Christchurch, homeowners have the right to have a ‘minor’ home in their backyard up to 60 square metres, Bernard and Jan think that would be an excellent idea here in the Nelson - Tasman region.

“We can’t keep spreading into the vegetable growing areas like we are doing; we have very little flat land available in Nelson,” says Jan. “I personally think local councils should not be allowing developers to be building on our growing land; they should make people build on the hillsides.”

With all of our designs - we can turn them upside down, tip them up on end, create stairwells, put Infinity Pools off the side of balconies; we can do anything - you are only limited by your imagination,” says Jan.

While there might be a perception that container homes are a somewhat recent phenomenon, there is actually a long history of these being constructed, especially in the United States and some European countries, like Spain and

In 1987 another patent was filed, by a man named Phillip Clark, for converting containers into “Habitable buildings.”

It’s understood the very first, more substantial, container home in Australia was built in 2011 by Todd & Di Miller which is now known as the “Graceville Container House.” This consisted of no less than 31 containers and is a three storey home, with several bedrooms, a pool room, a gym, an art studio, living areas and so on.

“All of our home options are fully insulated, either with Rockwool or extruded polystyrene; the floors can be wood, such as bamboo, or they can be tiled or carpeted. We use the best quality products available, but unfortunately affordability in New Zealand is impossible; sometimes more than twice the price, so we have them built in China and our project manager then puts them together like lego.”

The plans are then sent to China for the home to be built.

Denmark. The first patent for container homes was actually filed in 1962, by the Insbrandtsen Company, which listed Christopher Betjemann as the inventor.

Pineapple ice cream

RECIPE

(will make about 4 litres)

TMK’s Chocolate Tart with Pineapple Ice Cream

1 litre pineapple juice

Short pastry

350 g sugar

850 g pureed pineapple 800 ml cream 300 ml milk 4 tsp pineapple essence 8 egg yolks 200 g liquid glucose

(will be enough for 2 tarts) 400 g flour 220 g unsalted butter cut in to cubes 2 eggs lightly whisked 3/4 cup icing sugar Pinch of salt

Add the flour and icing sugar to a food processor along with the cubed butter. Mix until mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs.

Add eggs while machine is still running and mix until a firm dough is formed. Take mixture out and wrap in cling film and let it rest in the fridge for about 20 minutes.

Roll pastry until about 4mm thick, put in to a greased tart tin. Cover with greaseproof paper and fill with dried rice then blind bake in the oven for approx. 20 mins or until the pastry is cooked and slightly golden. Remove the greaseproof with the rice and put the pastry case to the side.

Chocolate filling (for 1 tart) 320 g 70% dark chocolate 1 cup cream 1/2 cup milk

In a bowl whisk together egg yolks and sugar until pale and frothy. Heat milk and cream together in a saucepan until boiling, pour on to the egg mixture and whisk until combined. Pour back in to a saucepan and cook on a low heat stirring continuously with a wooden spoon until mixture coats the back of a spoon. Take custard of the heat, mix in the glucose until combined and strain through a fine sieve. Add the rest of the ingredients and put aside to chill before mixing in an ice cream maker

1/2 tsp salt 2 large eggs

Melt chocolate in the liquid. Whisk in salt and eggs and mix thoroughly. Pour in to the tart shell and bake at 170 degrees for 10 – 15 minutes or until the chocolate mix is set.
