Property pushes economy Statistics from the NZ Regional Economic Scoreboard shows Nelson soaring into the top four. The economic scoreboard takes the latest quarterly regional statistics and ranks the economic performance of New Zealand’s 16 regional council areas. Ratings are updated every three months and are meas-
ured by population, employment, construction, retail trade, house prices and new car sales. ASB chief economist Nick Tuffley says Nelson has proven itself to be the biggest mover on the scoreboard this quarter jumping up to fourth place thanks, largely, to the housing market. “Up six spots, Nelson’s hous-

ing market is back in favour as the region records double-digit annual house price growth, one of only six regions to do so,” says Nick. “However, outside the housing market, Nelson is a mixed bag. Shortage of flowers on Daffodil Day
Brittany Spencer While there was no shortage of Daffodil Day volunteers, fresh flowers had to be flown in from Auckland on Friday morning to keep up with Nelson’s generosity. Cancer Society centre manager Linda Lucre says the recent weather has prevented the bulk of daffodils from blooming.
“We haven’t had the usual amount from our patch yet but we’ll sell them as soon as they’re out.” Despite the flower shortage, Linda says the volunteers were amazing and is expecting the money raised to be on par with last year. “We had so many enthusiastic, upbeat volunteers and it’s always a really happy day, a sign of hope and a sign
of spring.” Money raised from the day stays within the region, with the majority being put towards support and information resources such as support groups and courses for those working with cancer patients. Late blooming daffodils will be available from the Cancer Society office and from 185 on Main Rd Hope.

New bins for Nelson
New recycling bins will be hitting kerbsides across Nelson over the next three weeks. Around 19,500 new recycling wheelie bins are being rolled out as part of a new recycling system. The bins will be for plastics, cans, paper and cardboard recycling, but won’t be collected until the new recycling trucks hit the road on October 17. The usual recycling regime will continue in the meantime. The switch to wheelie bins is expected to increase the amount people are able to recycle, and having a lid means the paper and cardboard will stay dry and not get blown around.

Central city schools were set to storm the football pitch at Neale Park today for the Trafalgar Cup, but there was more than just victory on the line. The tournament was made up of eight primary schools including Hampden Street, Central and Auckland Point, and among the players were the future mascots and ball boys/ girls for the Wellington Phoenix’s first game in Nelson. The winning and runner-up teams, as well as players chosen
on the day for their fair play, have been selected to hold the hands of their A-League football heroes as they walk onto the pitch for ‘The Battle of Trafalgar II’ . Trafalgar Events Limited events manager Aly Cook says it will be a great experience for the budding football stars. “The Phoenix coming to Nelson for the very first time is going to be quite a big deal for football-mad children and this is a great chance for them to see
their heroes in action.” The preseason match between the Wellington Phoenix and Central Coast Mariners will be hosted at Nelson’s Trafalgar Park on September 24. A curtain opener between Tasman United and the Wellington Phoenix Reserves will kick off at 1.15pm, with the Phoenix-Mariner clash beginning at 4pm. ‘I want to be mayor’ Locally Owned and Operated

The contrast was stark. On the right, Rachel Reese launched her mayoral campaign in the waterfront’s historic Boat Shed, speaking to an audience of business leaders, Southern Link backers and other supporters. Most of the full house was dressed smart, sipping on drinks and nibbling on finger food. On the left, Pete Rainey launched his mayoral campaign in a car park, speaking to supporters that included union leaders carrying balloons, community leaders wearing “Vote Rainey” badges and a healthy dose of obedient dogs on leads. Of course there were exceptions. Some artists and grassroots community leaders were at Rachel’s launch and some businesspeople were at Pete’s. But overall, the two launches were like the candidates: chalk and cheese. Rachel, the current mayor, touted her experience, her leadership and the region’s booming economy. Pete, a three-term councillor, spoke of frustration and opportunities that have not been seized upon.

Interestingly, both used the word “anomaly” to describe Nelson for its ability to grow at a rate that dwarfs other regional centres, and how attracting young people and families was important to the region. Both also touched on the need to warm Nelson homes and the usual things like supporting sport, the arts, families and giving a shout out to the vote-rich suburb of Stoke. That’s about where they split. Pete spoke of a desire to introduce a “living wage” for council employees and contractors that the council employs. He spoke

Pete told supporters he wasn’t just an “artsy guy” but was a successful businessman who would make Nelson zing. This election is really between two, and at least there is a clear difference.

.CO.NZ Man charged with violent Nelson murder faces court: A man has faced court charged with the murder of a man whose body was found on a boat at Nelson more than three weeks ago. Martin Grant Price, 52, was arrested on Saturday, August 20, and appeared in Nelson District Court last Monday charged with killing John Murray Morton, whose body was discovered at Nelson Haven on August 4. Price will next appear in the High Court at Nelson on September 6, his lawyer Tony Bamford told NZ Newswire. He was unable to comment on whether Price would enter a plea on that date. According to detectives, Mr Morton’s injuries suggested he was the victim of a “very violent attack”. Trial to reduce chlorine at Richmond Aquatic Centre: A new water treatment system will be trialled at the Richmond Aquatic Centre and is expected to result in clearer, softer water – as well as a reduction in the smell of chlorine. The Austrian-developed system called Wapotec will be trialled in the lane pool and will more than halve the amount of chlorine currently used. If successful, the Council will consider rolling out Wapotec treatment to the other pools at the aquatic centre over time. The trial begins on 25 August and runs for two months.

Student pushes car free days for school drop-offs

Andrew Board Clifton Terrace School’s decade-long status as an enviro school has been an adult-led initiative – until now. The school is currently a silver rated enviro school and is this year aiming for the top “green/ gold” award. And it may just be a project by ten-year-old Tessa Dudley that helps them get there. Tessa started working on a school project to lower carbon dioxide emissions, and after collected weeks of data, she came up with the idea to make “days beginning with T vehicle free”. Tessa is encouraging parents to either walk to school with their kids, or if it’s too far, to park away from the school and walk the final distance. “Every little bit helps,” she says. Tessa arrives at school at 8.20am every Tuesday and Thursday to count how many cars drop off kids. The highest has been 150 in a single day. School principal Rob Wemyss says that may shock some parents into jumping on board

Spring Fling raises cash for school Jessie Johnston The fifth annual Spring Fashion Fling saw local hit the catwalk last Saturday night in front of a sold-out audience at Nelson College for Girls. It’s the major fundraising event of the year for the school’s parent teacher association, although PTA chairwoman Wendy Reeve says the Spring Fashion Fling is also focused on being a fun, community event. “We usually source a mix of students and staff from the college, but this year we decided that, because the focus really is on a community event, we’d invite members of the community to model as well,” says Wendy. Eight local fashion stores and designers contributed to the fashion show, which attracted many whoops and cheers from the audience, while off the catwalk, Wendy says the event received a huge amount of support from the community through spon-

Air quality monitoring in Richmond between 2013 and 2015 has identified the presence of arsenic at the Oxford St monitoring station. Monitoring data indicates the annual average arsenic concentration for 2014 in Richmond of 19 nanograms per cubic metre of air exceeded the New Zealand Ambient Air Quality Guideline of 5.5 as an annual average). A detailed analysis, carried out by GNS Science on behalf of the Tasman District Council, identified two sources of this arsenic – a seasonal increase from the burning of treated wood in domestic fires and occasional higher concentrations possibly linked with an industrial source in the area. Council Environment and Planning Manager Dennis Bush-King says it is a timely reminder to residents that burning treated or painted timber is not permitted under the Tasman Resource Management Plan. Nelson Marlborough District Health Board public health officers are working with the council to determine any public health implications from the elevated arsenic levels.

The first sees them contribute to a large project within the school - this year it will most likely be the school’s outdoor enhancement and beautification project - the second is a contribution to the end of year prize giving, while the third sees them ask for ideas to be submitted by the teachers who may require resources that aren’t covered by the ministry budget.

MINI BIRTHDAY: Chris Jones and David Wallace of the Minis in Nelson Club, with Chris’s 1964 Austin Mini. The club gathered in the WOW car park on Sunday afternoon to celebrate the 57th anniversary of the Mini. Members proudly showed off their cars while on-lookers were keen to have a look and talk to owners about their cars. The membership of the club sits at around 50, with about 25 cars. Menzshed builds ‘buddy seat’ for Tahuna School, Wednesday, July 13: Since building and installing a buddy seat for Tahuna School, which aims to help lonely and isolated students make new buddies, Menzshed Waimea are now working to complete more for local schools. Around 100 balls of wool have been dropped into the library over the past week and librarian Nicola Harwood couldn’t be happier. “It’s really wonderful to have the community support and it’s really good that the programme has taken off so well.” The group is knitting up a storm for charity and welcomes any further donations of wool.

Branding on gondola: It’s great to see Nelson’s gondola getting the support it deserves with Nelson City Council’s Governance Committee voting to release $50,000 for the development of a business case for the project. I take my hat off to the Nelson Cycle Lift Society for the years of voluntary work that they’ve put into the project to date. The gondola could be a game-changer for Nelson; it would be like having a ski field on our backdoor that’s open 12 months a year. In fact, I think it’s the best idea anyone has come up with since the World of Wearable Arts show left town. If the dream of the gondola does become a reality, one thing I would love to see is the word ‘NELSON’ emblazoned across its cabins. I like the idea of people sharing and tweeting photos with 'NELSON’ screaming out at the world from every shot. Nelson’s community spirit was celebrated on Tuesday night at the Eelco Boswijk Civic Awards ceremony, with eight Nelsonians taking away awards. The triennial awards recognise outstanding community service, with a focus this year on individuals or groups who are working towards making our Nelson 2060 goals a reality. 191 nominations were received, with 41 individuals and organisations recognised at the ceremony, highlighting their outstanding efforts in making Nelson an even better place. Winners were selected across six categories: community hero, community spirit, leadership, kaitiakitanga (caring for the natural environment), smart living and change maker. Community hero was awarded to John-Paul Pochin for his work with Light Nelson and also for his innovative and positive influence across the cycling community. Glenn Bisdee, of charity Keeping Kids Warm, won the community spirit award for his work in helping Nelson families keep their homes warm. The leadership award went to both Debs Martin and Nigel Andrews. Debs from Nelson Weedbusters was recognised for her work in getting rid of invasive weeds, while Nigel, from Z petrol stations, was celebrated for encouraging his staff to donate their time to charitable organisations. The kaitiakitanga award went to Ian Price for his work on the Paremata Flats Restoration project, while the smart living award was given to Rod and Ngaire Witte for their eco-friendly initiatives when building their Atawhai Drive home. Victory kids learn to grow their own food Dancers Victory Primary School kids will be feasting on potatoes, peas, beans, radishes and carrots this summer – and they are sure to taste even better knowing they have grown them themselves. The school has been running the successful Garden to Table programme for the last year-and-a-half, and children are getting ready to plant a bumper crop of summer vegetables. Garden to Table aims to teach seven to 12-year-olds how to grow, harvest, prepare and share fresh, seasonal food in the school environment, and Victory is the only school in Nelson to offer the programme. The middle syndicate get the chance to help in the garden twice a term, with six cooking sessions a year, and their hard work results in delicious meals they sit down together to eat. Seven-year-old Miles Campbell says “its fun” and admits he now likes broccoli, while eight-year-old Awatini Dooley says she now eats carrots because of the programme. Apple muffins, pizza, carrot salad, soup and pasta are just some of the dishes the children have made so far. Sarah Garlick, kitchen and garden facilitator and teacher aide at the school, says it’s amazing seeing the children learning gardening skills and enjoying new foods. “I had one mum say to me that her child eats kale now after growing it, and one child who never ate zucchini ended up loving the zucchini fritters we made – their mum couldn’t believe it,” she says.

They are also growing seeds in their classroom at the moment, which they will soon transfer into the garden. Teacher Susan Richards, who is also the programme liaison, says she’s seen the programme light a passion for gardening and cooking in many of the children. “The biggest thing for me is seeing how it
engages some of the children – and there is so much learning going on,” she says. The cooking sessions take place at the Victory Community Centre kitchen and Sarah says they are always looking for people to help out with these, or with the gardening. “It’s quite an endeavour to have 30 children cooking at once, so we always appreciate volunteers, and you don’t need to be a school parent to do it.” If you are interested in helping out with the Garden to Table programme, you can contact the school on 548 4779. Fiesta Bulbs will also be making a donation to Garden to Table from every pack purchased in their Fiesta Seed Potatoes range.
Dancers from around the country gave it their all last Saturday in a bid to take out a title in this year’s Shakedown Hip Hop Champs. The event was split into two competition sessions; solo performers, small crews and school’s taking to the Nelson College assemble hall stage in the afternoon, while the junior, varsity, open and mega crews got their chance to perform in the evening. Around 200 dancers in total competed in the champs, with over 700 people making up the audience. The winners of the Junior Small Crew section were Nelson’s Iconic, Junior Solo was won by Nelson’s Maia Weir, Senior Solo went to Min Bin from Christchurch, Senior Small Crew was won by Nelson crew Tag Team, and in the school’s section Enner Glynn won the primary school division while Motueka High won the college division. In the evening session, Nelson’s Fuzion won the Junior Crews section, Shutter from Christchurch won the Varsity section and Part ll won the Open Division, while Zion took out the title for the Mega Crew section.

It was an action-packed Sunday at Happy Valley Adventures during Hira School’s third annual Valley to View Family Fun Day. While a gala style format kept people entertained on flat ground, up in the hills people of all ages were making the most of the chance to walk and bike their way through Happy Valley’s various bush tracks. “This year we wanted to try and make it more of a family fun event, as the last two years we targeted it more as a mountain biking event,” says Hira School fundraising committee

Walks included the Valley to View loop, which passed the Tree Tops Café, not usually open to the public, and also took in panoramic views of Pepin Island and Delaware Bay. Beattie says funds raised this year will go towards upgrading a special classroom kitchen. “We have recently upgraded and modernised our classroom learning spaces and now want to improve the area where kids get to cook and use produce from our school vegetable gardens. "We are very lucky to have programmes running that involve hands-on learning.” The Valley to View Family Fun Day attracted over 700 people and organisers say they were successful in raising around $5000, close to double what their previous fundraiser generated.

Exhibition raises cash for hospice With the help of local sponsors, touring artists Mike and Richard Ponder have raised $11,050 for the Nelson Tasman Region Hospice Trust with their exhibition ‘Ponder This’. Nelson Tasman Region Hospice Trust chairman John Peters says it is a huge amount of money for the hospice. “Getting support from the community is something that we rely on, without it we can’t do what we do, so we’re really grateful to everyone who came and played a part in the exhibition.”
The exhibition was hosted at the Old Powerstore building on Trafalgar St for two weeks and proved very popular. Featuring the work of both brothers, the exhibition placed together typical rural kiwi scenes with Van Gough-styled landscapes. Arron Cox of Houston Motor Group, a major sponsor of the exhibition, says he was happy to support it. The money will go towards building a new hospice and has kick-started a fundraising drive to cover the build.

Zoe McBride wins second world rowing title Nelson rower Zoe McBride has claimed her second lightweight single sculls world title at the 2016 World Rowing Championships in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Zoe claimed her first lightweight single sculls world championship title in at the 2015 World Rowing Championships in Aiguebelette, France. Zoe is also a two time under-23 world champion in the light-
weight double sculls. Zoe’s 2015 season was nothing short of spectacular. As well as becoming the lightweight single world champion, Zoe broke the long-standing world best time in this boat class by going 7:24.460 for the 2000 metre race during the World Rowing Cup. Yesterday’s A final time of 8:28.450 in head wind conditions wouldn’t beat Zoe’s world fastest time, but it was enough to secu-

Nelson duo win every major football trophy Jacob Page
FC Nelson footballers Richard Scott and Lutz Gerwin have become the first players to win every senior football trophy in Nelson. The pair won the masters title earlier this month to complete the amazing feat. Together, they have won the 2nd Division, 3rd Division, Masters Division, Gould and Tout Trophy, AF Hurst Cup, Masters Knockout Cup, Glen Stephens Trophy and Top of the South League. Richard has won the 1st Divison, Price Charity Cup and McCarthy Challege Cup with Nelson Suburbs and the 1st Division again in 2007 with Nelson United Reserves. Lutz won the 1st Division with FC Nelson in 2012. “A standout period for us was 2008 and 2009 when the Nelson United Reserves remained unbeaten and dominated the 2nd Division and Glen Stephens Competition,” Richard says. sure; I can’t imagine there are too many people who can say they’ve done this in their sport.” Richard has also been player/ coach in a majority of the victories and he credited the quality players he had played with as key contributors to
the success. Both men say they will be back next year. “I just love playing football and it keeps me fit,” Richard says. “Once I hang up my boots that’ll be it for me, but I got through this season fully fit so I’ll keep going.”

Tasman United make two top signings It has been a busy week for Tasman United, with the signings of Swedish striker Ermal Hajdari and Australian mid-fielder Scott Gannon for their debut national league football campaign in November. Tasman United coach Richard Anderson’s worldly contacts helped to pick up 24-year-old Ermal, who he believes will be a goal scoring threat to complement the experience of marquee signing Paul Ifill. “People will come for Paul but they will stay for Ermal,” Richard says. “He has excellent ball control, pace, and the ability to beat players one-onone. “He’s a very exciting signing.” In England, he scored 16 goals in 22 matches playing against

professional teams of the same age group, including AS Roma, Southampton, Burnley and many others. After trialling with a number of English clubs, he played a season of professional football in Estonia, helping his team FC Infonet into a Europa League qualifying position for the first time in the club’s history. Scott, who is based in Adelaide, has had a previous stint with Hawke’s Bay United and Southern United. Scott was offered a trial for West Ham in 2005, but turned it down to play international age-group football for Australia, which he did under current Socceroos
coach Ange Postecoglou. His grandfather was a triallist for Tottenham Hotspur before being called in to the navy. “To be honest, I thought my days of going overseas to play were behind me, but this opportunity came up and I thought it was something worth going for. “As [Richard] said when he first came in, the chance to be part of something new is a big motivator to coming on board.” Scott says he expected to play a defensive midfield role, to stick on the ball and keep possession in tight spaces. “I’m looking forward to arriving in Nelson and repaying the faith that the club has shown in me.” Both players are scheduled to arrive on September 6.

Duo race each other around Rabbit Island before China Quest Jacob Page Nelson multi-sport athletes Trevor Voyce and Dan Busch rode to the start line together, came first and second, then rode home together after the Nelson Triathlon Club's first of Spring Duathlons at Rabbit Island on Sunday. Trevor beat Dan by 20 seconds, completing the five kilometre run, 17km bike and 2.5km run course in one hour and three minutes. The pair head to China on Saturday to team with Richard and Elina Ussher in the Wulong Outdoor Quest on
September 5. Richard, Elina and Trevor have won the race before, but with Richard being in some of the best shape of his career, hopes are high of a decent performance. The duo said they worked together during the bike leg on Sunday before Trevor got the lead he needed to carry him to victory in the final run home. Both men said the course was a perfect preparation for the four day running, kayaking and mountain bike race that will total more than 250km. "Because you're running and biking on sand it doesn't feel like there's much spring," Tre-
vor says. "It becomes a real strength-oriented race," Dan says "We just had to push each other today without many of the young fellas here. "Me and Trev have done a lot of training together over the last six weeks.” The pair rode together from Nelson to compete in the event and say they think they have a team which can win in China. "This was the perfect lead-up race for us," Trevor says. "We are going to China to win, and while there are a lot of variables that go in to a race like that, I believe we can do it."

Northern Abel Tasman National Park Possum control operation As part of the ecological restoration of Abel Tasman National Park, the Department of Conservation (DOC) and Project Janszoon are planning aerial pest control to protect the Park’s native species from high possum numbers. This pest control is essential for native species recovery and ecosystem restoration. DOC and Project Janszoon have applied non-toxic pre-feed cereal baits on 17 August. This will be followed by the application of toxic baits containing sodium fluoroacetate (1080) during the next period of fine weather. Description of the area Part of Abel Tasman National Park, from a line between the Awapoto hut and the Awaroa River mouth, north to Separation Point and Whariwharangi Bay, excluding all catchments into the Wainui Valley. Exclusion zones have been placed around the Totaranui campground, Whariwharangi hut and access points along the coast. During the operation, all tracks within the operational area and the roads east of Pigeon Saddle will be closed until cleared of bait. Method of control Cereal baits containing the pesticide will be distributed by helicopter over the above areas. The baits are cylindrical pellets approximately 2cm in diameter, dyed green and cinnamon lured. The pesticide is poisonous to humans and domestic animals. Always remember: • DO NOT touch bait • WATCH CHILDREN at all times • DO NOT EAT animals from this area • DEADLY TO DOGS, do not allow dogs access to animal carcasses Observe these rules wherever you see warning signs placed at public access points in the park.
