The Nelson City Council is pondering whether the CBD needs a multilevel carpark to add to its 1700 public spaces as it tries to figure out how to draw more peo-

ple into the city centre. “Access [to the city] has been an issue that has been raised with us and that is not going to be a quick fix,” says council’s group head of strategy and environment, Clare Barton. It comes after a series of forums with retailers and landlords over

the future of the CBD, as empty shopfronts continue to pop up. “Currently we are looking at options and that might include multi-storey carparks,” Clare says. However, council was also to look

at ways of encouraging Nelsonians to think differently about the need for carparks. It had recently spoken with a residential developer from Wellington who was putting in central city apartments for 30 people, but

with only four car parking spaces. Instead it was looking at offering four electric vehicles for its residents to use. “We are looking at how we can encourage that kind of thinking,” Clare says.

Multi-level carpark for Nelson? FROM PAGE 1 Nelson has about 1,700 public parking spaces in the CBD area, although this number does vary, plus around a further 2800 spaces in the CBD fringe area. Council undertakes quarterly sample surveys to provide parking occupancy data to ensure it is meeting its performance targets in this area. These targets are that there is between 85 per cent and 95 per cent occupancy for “long stay parking” and 95 per cent occupancy in the midweek peak in December for short stay parking. Council surveys undertaken over the last two years show that much of the surveyed CBD parking is between 70 per cent and 90 per cent occupied at 1pm with an overall average of approximately 84 per cent regularly occupied at 1pm. Photo: Sara Hollyman. parking situation is fine. “The issue is over the summer period with tourists does become a bit of bedlam, but there is also an expectation in the community that they expect to park right outside the shop they want to go to.” Uniquely Nelson’s Simon Duffy says there is a bigger picture than just parking. “We have two of the largest car parks in the top of the South Island which takes up 15 per cent of CBD.

“Why Nelson is or isn’t thriving is not about parking.” He thinks people focus too much on it when really they just need to get used to not parking exactly outside the place they want to shop at. “It’s not a deal breaker.” Statistics provided by council show that fears that Nelsonians were driving to Richmond rather than shopping in Nelson were not apparent. In fact, the numbers of Nelsonians shopping in Nelson has remained fairly stable over the last few years. Online shopping had increased but not at the national rate. Clare says council is also looking at the bus terminal to see whether it might be moved outside the CBD to better cater to NMIT students. “Do we even need it in the city centre, and what does that look like?”

Victory School have been plagued by overflowing sewage whenever there is heavy rain, meaning its playground must be closed and then treated before children can play on it again. Principal Helen Taylor-Young says the problem has been going on for about three years. During last week’s heavy rain the playground was taped off and children were not allowed on it for 24 hours. It was the third time this year it had happened. “The key message is that the health and safety of the children is paramount,” says Helen. “Whenever it happens they come, it’s treated and disinfected. Council come here quickly but they haven’t solved the problem.” In heavy rain, the sewerage overflows from the school toilet block and also pollutes neighbouring properties. “As you can see, it’s our main play space,” Helen says. “When it is those heavy rains the drains just can’t cope with it.” The situation has got so bad that Nelson MP Nick Smith has

Photo: Charles Anderson. called on Nelson City Council chief executive Pat Dougherty to sort the matter out. “Normally I would go to council directly, but that this has been happening for three or four years means action needs to be taken,” he says. Nick says the sewerage outflow is unacceptable. “Such regular failures clearly shows the infrastructure is inadequate to cope with even moderate weather events.” Council communication manager Paul Shattock says council has been looking at options for the problem. The preferred option is to con-

struct a new wastewater line in Vanguard St. This would allow affected properties to be disconnected from the main in Vanguard St, which is the cause of these overflow issues. Paul says, due to the cost of the work, the project went out to tender which closes this week. “A contractor will be engaged to address the issue as soon as possible. We agree that the current situation is not acceptable, and have Nelmac on standby to clean-up any overflows if a weather event hits before the work can be completed.

Safer signs for Rocks Road

Nelson’s most scenic road is set to be a little less congested thanks to a new NZTA innovation. The agency recently installed a series of small, signpost sockets at regular intervals along Rocks Road, where the cycle lane and footpath are close to the State Highway 6 traffic. The signs come after the Nelson Weekly reported on issues with cyclists regularly having to serve into passing traffic to get around signage. NZTA system manager Frank Porter says Rocks Rd is an area where there is regular road maintenance and need for temporary traffic management.

“These signpost sockets will be well used,” Frank says. These temporary signs are designed to be inserted directly into the sockets, replacing the use of four prong base stands. “This is safer for pedestrians and cyclists as there is very little space on the highway and the ‘legs’ of the usual temporary signs take up valuable space on the footpath or cycleway.” The specially designed regulatory roadwork signs will be 2.5 metres in height and built to the same standards as permanent signs. The height of the new signs will also increase visibility, as they can be seen from further away, giving a longer warning time.

Woman sexually groomed teenage neighbour, court hears Sara Hollyman A 37-year-old woman who kissed her teenage neighbour in their shared garage has pleaded guilty to a sexual grooming charge in the Nelson District Court.

According to the summary of facts read to the court yesterday, the woman began to communicate with the 14-year-old boy via Facebook late last year. The communications eventually became sexually motivated and

on March 23 this year, the pair met in the shared garage where they kissed on the mouth. They then went back to their respective homes where they sent messages about how the meeting “went well”.

The following day the boy’s mother found the messages and contacted Police. The woman pleaded guilty to a charge of meeting a young person following sexual grooming. Judge Richard Russell told the

woman he would not enter a conviction against her “at this time”. He remanded her on bail at large to reappear on November 19 – with no conditions other than she is not to contact the victim except for restorative justice.

NEWS Pay it forward lunch: Instead of paying forward a coffee next time you are at Morri’s on Hardy St, you can pay forward a lunch for a needy school kid. Café owner Kay Field says she wanted to help out the work of Angels Humble Beginnings which feeds kids at schools across Nelson. Five dollars goes towards buying lunches which include sandwiches, chips, muesli bars, fruit and yoghurt. “It seemed like a great idea. I’m sure our customers will appreciate it.” Reducing the region’s waste: The Nelson Tasman region produces about 62,000 tonnes of waste which ends up in landfills each year. The Nelson City and Tasman District councils are working together to minimise and manage waste in the region. They are asking the public how they can do better and what more they could be doing to reduce waste. The proposed update to the Nelson Tasman Waste Management and Minimisation Plan sees a greater focus on waste avoidance. Consultation is open until 17 September, 2018. Cycleway delay: The Maitai to Rocks Rd shared pathway completion has been pushed back by another month. The pathway was due to be completed in July but was pushed out to the end of August due to February’s two cyclones. NZTA now puts the completion at the end of September. The agency’s Frank Porter says that 80 per cent of the scheduled work has been completed but the discovery of fragile pipes has affected the completion timeline.

Two of Nelson’s social clubs are set to unite under one roof next month. The Nelson Suburban Club will be operating from the Nelson City Club on Kinzett Terrace from the start of September. It is a welcome move for the Suburban Club, whose future has been uncertain since it closed the doors to its Tahunanui Drive venue at the end of 2017. The club has been based at the Nelson Golf Club since February, but club president Pam Coltman says it was never a permanent option for them. “It’s exciting that this is not temporary. Our members need to have some stability and I think we’ll complement each other well.”

She also hopes the move into the city will help to grow their membership - although she expects they could lose some of their current 1400 members. “Lots of people don’t have the ability to travel, but we will be offering a courtesy coach from Tahunanui, Stoke, Richmond and Atawhai, to help get people to and from town.”

Pam says they will also be looking at installing a lift at the new venue to cater for members who can’t climb the stairs. The clubs will be combining their club nights, which are held every day apart from Sundays and Mondays. Pam says the club scene is a safe place for people to go and have a drink and a meal, and

socialise. Members from both clubs are invited to meet at the Suburban Club’s first day at the premises on 1 September at 4:30pm. New members are also welcome. Quiz evenings will continue at Kinzett Terrace on Tuesdays and housie continues at Warnes Stadium on Tuesday afternoons.

Up to 200 more families in the Top of the South will have warm, dry, and secure new homes built over the next four years. The promise has been made possible as a result of the Government’s comprehensive Public Housing Plan released today by Housing and Urban Development Minister Phil Twyford. "The Government’s fully-funded Public Housing Plan will build 6400 new homes for families in need." Roz proves anyone can ‘art’ Locally Owned and Operated

Roz Speirs never thought she would be an artist. With a career in sales and marketing, the Nelson woman only ever dreamed of a leading a life as a creative professional. But when Roz’s husband decided to have a garage clear out four years ago, things changed. “He suggested that we get rid of my languishing art supplies that I'd brought from Scotland when I emigrated to New Zealand in 2002,” she says. “I said 'no'. I had a creative itch that I needed to scratch, I just hadn’t found the right medium yet.” But Roz soon discovered the world of fused glass and “fell in love”. “I find traditional forms of art quite frustrating. But with glass, you’re working with colour, texture and form. One of the most exciting things about working with glass is that it involves both art and science.” Roz started out with a small microwave kiln and enrolled herself in an array of courses and workshops to make sure glass was the “right thing” for her, before investing in a bigger kiln. Now, she produces a mixture of functional and decorative pieces, such as bowls, suncatchers and

This will be Roz’s third time doing the annual three-day expo and she says it’s a “great way” for

her to get exposure to thousands of keen art buyers. “The advantage of the expo is that people get to see everything under one roof. As an art buyer, it’s the best place to go. It’s such a cool environment with the music and café. You can take your time

and relax.” Event manager Nic Foster says there will also be artists are from outside the region - some of them exhibiting in Nelson for the first time. “This is a great opportunity for art buyers to see new works by artists from outside the area,

but many of our local artists have also been creating new pieces especially for the show,” he says. Art Expo Nelson will be held at the Trafalgar Centre from Friday 31 August – Sunday 2 September, from 10am. Entry is $5 for adults, children under 15 free.

After being told by New Zealand doctors that spinal fusion was her daughter’s best and only option, Noa Vodnizky took to researching everything and anything she could to find an alternative. At just ten-years-old, Nikau Parker was diagnosed with Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis – her spine was starting to bend in an ‘S’ shape. Now aged 13, Nikau has recently returned from Turkey where she had a successful surgery to correct the bends in her spine. After seeking help in New Zealand, they were told by an Auckland-based specialist that spinal fusion was her best option. In this operation, Nikau would’ve had two rods fused to her spine, restricting movement for her entire life. Nikau is an avid sport lover so Noa knew this was not an option. Your Voice Response to ‘heart of Nelson stops beating’ comments: While Pete Rainey and Aldo Miccio made some valid points in their letters to the Weekly (Aug. 21), it needs to be remembered that they were apparently voted out of office for some of the same reasons that criticism is now being directed at Rachel Reese. All of them came to council on the same ticket. And they brought huge rate rises and spiralling debt to Nelson, while much of the essential infrastructure did not receive attention. Nelson Matters A major debate on New Zealand’s approach to justice is underway with the Coalition Government’s summit last week and proposals to slash the prison population by 30%. I am open to new ideas as to how we can better prevent young people getting onto the treadmill of our justice system, but equally firm that our first priority must be the victims of crime. The Government’s arbitrary target to reduce the prison population by 30% or 3,000 inmates is a mistake. If you do the crime, you do the time. I see no evidence of excessive sentencing by our courts. It is very rare for people

to get a custodial sentence for minor offending. The vast bulk of our prisoners have committed serious multiple crimes. I do not share the moral panic over New Zealand’s imprisonment level. Minister Davis has claimed it’s the second highest in the world. This is factually incorrect as pointed out by justice academic Dr Liam Martin who says we are now fifth and 60th of 220 countries world-wide. The numbers equate to two people per 1,000 population and are growing at about 3% per year, not much more than our population growth. My fear is for public safety with the Government’s plans to soften our bail,

parole and sentencing laws. A controversial issue is National’s ‘Three Strikes law’ passed in 2010 that new Justice Minister Andrew Little wants to repeal. This law only applies to offenders over 18 and to serious, violent and sexual offenders. There is no parole or early release on a second strike and a maximum sentence on a third strike. The three strikes law has been applied to 9,943 cases, with 207 in our Nelson court. The average number of criminal convictions for a person on a second strike was 26 and a third strike, 64. These are not one-off offenders but serious criminals! Last week this law was applied to a

population down is not by softening our bail and sentencing laws but by going hard on the causes of crime. I am all for programmes that target drug use including better rehab, improved mental health services and better support for families. We need to get better at targeting effective services at those atrisk children. National will not be opposing everything the Government tries in reforming our justice system. Our focus will be on ensuring any change delivers on making our communities safer and not just letting people out from prisons. Advert.

New hospital chaplain lives ‘life’s journey’ Charles Anderson Editor

Henk Lups works at the sharp edges of the human experience. As the new Nelson Hospital chaplain, he and his team of 20 volunteers offer emotional and spiritual care, for all patients, all staff and their families. “Faith or non-faith, religion or non-religion, it doesn’t matter,” he says. Henk says he is in the role now because of “life’s journey” – one that took him from being the head of a hospitality school in Christchurch, to Cambodia where he suffered an accident that forced him back to New Zealand, and to his home being red-zoned during the earthquakes. Then he and his wife moved to Nelson.

“We had to start again, no job no nothing. You get more resilient, a better sense of who you are and

what you can cope with.” Henk trained in clinical pastoral education and during that time

he felt pulled towards the health sector. “We share in people’s sadness but also celebrate the wins

and everything in between,” he says. “It is quite a magical place, a hospital.” There are about 150 in-patients in Nelson Hospital every day. “So, every day is different, every encounter and conversation is different,” Henk says. “And that makes it fascinating but also very meaningful. It’s the sharp edges of people’s lives. Sometimes it is demanding but other times encouraging and uplifting.” Henk says, even though he is a chaplain, most often when he talks with people at the hospital Christianity is not even mentioned. “It is about what are people wanting to share and who is there to listen and encourage. “We are there often for one of the most significant moments of people’s lives. It is a privilege.”

Fire destroys Stoke home A Stoke family watched their home be destroyed by fire early Saturday morning. The Fire Service was called to the blaze on Nayland Rd in Stoke, shortly after 6am. A neighbour told Nelson Weekly that the home was occupied by a woman and children.

Deputy chief of Stoke fire station Lance Williams was one of the first on the scene. “It was fully involved pretty much from top to bottom when we arrived. "It was a bit of a naughty fire, it didn’t put itself out very well." He says the occupants had

been sleeping in the house when the smoke detectors alerted them to the fire. "I don’t like to speculate on how it would’ve turned out otherwise." Fire investigators are putting their report together and he hasn’t yet heard what the cause of the fire was.

Ivie’s first day skiing Locally Owned and Operated

It will likely be a photo to roll out at her 18th birthday. In it, Ivie has just been strapped to a set of skis for the first time in her life. She’s pathetically sliding back and forth. She is tired and generally miserable. Her face droops, her hands, adorned with fish gloves, jut out from her body. She has a woolen rabbit hat on. It could be going better. It’s a great photo. But it also adequately captures a rite of passage. For many children, including myself, a miserable firsttime skiing story is part of the deal. It’s like a band aid - rip it off quick, get it out of the way and hopefully set the scene for a lifetime of enjoying the sport. So, at three and a half years old, I thought it time my daughter headed up Rainbow Ski Area. To ease her into it there was, of course, the tried and true tobogganing. Rainbow has a great array of toboggans and areas to test them out in – ranging from easy slide to death defying. This got Ivie used to the idea of being totally out of control while sliding towards an unsus-

pecting victim. But then it came time for the skis. We slid her feet into the tiniest ski boots they had on offer. “These are weird boots,” Ivie said, as she hobbled down towards the ski slope. Wait until they clipped on to planks, I thought. We aimed her toes for the binding and stepped down. Two skis on and away we went - me carrying her up the beginner’s slope before letting go and frantically running after her and hoping she didn’t kill anyone. Her day began with that photo but ended with her yelling at the top of her lungs: “Look at me goooooo

… I wanna go againeeee!” The next time we went up we enlisted the services of Ian the Rainbow ski instructor who was infinitely more patient than I. He pushed Ivie up the slopes as they generally chatted about her fish gloves and the colours on his jacket. Hint: they were rainbow coloured. He progressed her skills from plummeting down the slopes to making a “big triangle”. By the end she was able to stop herself without anyone running frantically after her. The final photo of the day usurps the first - Ian and Ivie, grinning after her first time skiing.

Mabel McAllister reckons people focus too much on their properties these days and not enough on their gardens. The 96-year-old ex-mayoress of Kaiapoi has been a garden lover her entire life but thinks that the fostering of the next generation of green-fingered locals needs to start young. “My mother and father both loved to garden so we were brought up to do gardening. Today they’re not getting enough, it’s all property and no garden.” Mabel encourages families to come along to the Central Garden Club’s annual show this weekend and bring their children, saying that generally kids are not taught the basics of gardening these days. “Children should be taught, given a little patch and be taught to garden.” Mabel has been a keen volunteer at the Central Garden Club since she moved to Nelson after the Christchurch earthquakes. The club will hold its annual flower show on Saturday, at the Stoke Methodist Church on Neale Ave. The show features large arrangements from local church-

He is one of dozens in Nelson remembering Merchant Navy Day on Saturday. “The reason the day came about is that it was finally realised that the merchant navy had put a lot into both world wars. Their losses were horrendous.” About 15,000 merchant seamen died in WW1 and about 37,000 in WWII. “But they weren’t like the military where they were armed,” Murray says. “They went through all these problems and they were lost.” Murray joined the Royal New Zealand Navy at 15-years-old and stayed for 10 years before becoming a merchant seaman, where he stayed for 40 years. For his last 20 years he was a captain. The merchant navy were tasked with carrying cargo to and from Allied countries during world wars – mostly to Britain to support it. “But in these modern times there are still a lot of merchant seamen being harassed. We have a big piracy problem in many parts the world with seamen being attacked and taken prisoner.” Murray has been boarded three times himself – in Thailand, Sri Lanka and West Africa. “That time a bunch of people came aboard with cane knives and started having a go at the crew in the middle of the night.” Merchant Navy Day is commemorated on September 3, the anniversary of the first Allied merchant ship being sunk during World War 2. In Nelson, a small but loyal contingent of local merchant seamen gather at 11am at Anzac Park on the closest Saturday to that date to pay their respects to their fallen colleagues. “You have to realise these guys worked under extremely difficult conditions and that is why we sit here today. You have to honour the guys who went before and didn’t make it home.”

During WWII over 800 conscientious objectors were sent to detention camps in New Zealand. This week, Garin College will be telling the story of two of them who ended up in Hautu at the southern end of Lake Taupo. Drama coordinator Daniel Allan says he wanted his students to perform the play as it took a different look at war. “Rather than focusing on glorifying war it looks at those who didn’t and how they were treated during that time.” Actor Jed Frethey, 16, says it was interesting as often you only learned about one side of the war experience and this gave an insight into one that was a little bit more unknown. “You do come away with a bit of an appreciation.” Fellow actor Hannah Pressman, 17, says the play is written in such a way that the performers are tasked with doing a lot of work without any speaking. “It created a way for us to connect to the play because when you read out the monologues

Prices win final thriller Jonty Dine

It took more than 70 minutes of tense, physical and dramatic netball, but Prices are Nelson’s premier champions for 2018. Prices ended Jacks unbeaten run to claim the title in an extra-time thriller at Saxton Stadium on Sunday afternoon. On the back of an outstanding defensive effort from Holly Chandler, Dayna Whiting and Tess Eden, Prices held on to register a stunning 4341 upset. Prices captain Shar Lowe says it was a roller-coaster of a final. "I’m very happy, it definitely could have gone either way, but I’m absolutely stoked we managed to pull it off.” Heading into extra-time, Shar says the message was to play boring, sensible netball and not throw the ball away. "I’m just so proud of my girls, our defence was amazing today, they are the reason we came out on top." Holly Chandler snatched the game’s first intercept, the first of many from the dynamic young goal keep. An uncharacteristic first miss from Shar Lowe put Prices on the back

foot as Jacks surged out to a five-goal lead, shooters Hannah Mead and Rayna Olsen looking in ominous form inside the circle. Prices looked flustered early on as they looked to settle its nerves, Shar eventually netting her first goal after almost five minutes. The goal clicked the girls into gear as Shar found her radar and the duo of Dayna and Holly started to cause havoc for Jack’s attack. Prices eventually squared the ledger midway through the second, before taking the lead for the first time. Rayna Olsen again succumbed to a calf injury, making way for Ani Waitai for just her second premier appearance this season. However, Jacks showed why they had yet to drop a game all season, Ani bringing Jacks back to 25 apiece. Kirsty Thompson, fresh off her Super Club appearance with the Singapore Sneakers, began to make her presence felt, combining beautifully with captain Jess Drummond on attack as Jacks stretched its lead to three with less than five to play. Holly’s relentless defence kept Prices in the contest and Jacks were soon

dealt another blow, losing wing attack Bayley Templeton to a leg injury. A goal to Prices star shooter Shar Lowe right at the end of regulation time squared the scores at 35-35, sending the storied rivals to overtime. The pace and intensity went up a notch, as did the atmosphere as the teams entered extra time. Rayna returned to the shooters circle and evened the honours at 41-41 as the 10-minute period expired, a two-goal advantage required to end the game. A crucial intercept from Holly allowed Chelsea Brooks to sink the match winner as Prices prevailed 43-41. Following the match, Holly capped her sensational season by being named premier MVP, most improved premier player and the MVP of the final. Jacks captain Jess Drummond was "gutted" following the loss. "Very disappointed, we should have had it in that first few minutes of extra-time, but just a few crucial errors gave it away." Jess was making no excuses, saying the side had prepared for the possibility of injuries throughout the week. "They just outdid us."

Tasman win hockey titles The Nelson hockey season wrapped up over the weekend, Tasman Men and Federal Women capping their dominant seasons with premier championships on Saturday. In men’s division one, Tasman proved far too strong for Federal, netting five goals and conceding none in the final at Saxton Turf. Federal women ran riot in its final against

Tasman, scoring six goals to Tasman’s one to remain unbeaten in 2018. Federal won all 15 round robin matches, conceding just five goals in the process and scoring 134. In men’s division three, a thriller was played out between Waimai and Federal, the sides needing to go to a penalty shoot out to be separated, Waimai eventually prevailing 4-3.

TENNIS: A combined Tasman Junior Tennis team travelled to Wellington over the weekend for their annual clash with Hutt Valley for the Straights Trophy. Home advantage along with strong competition in the 14s age group meant a challenge for the Tasman teams across age categories, 10s through to 16s. Tasman 10s came through with a win 7/5, their singles matches proving the turning point, winning five out of eight. The 12s team had a close call going down 14/10 to Hutt Valley, with

the 14s team being challenged by stronger players across the board, tipping the fixture in Hutt Valley favour with a 23/1 win. Despite the 14/10 win to Hutt Valley, the 16’s age group displayed more evenly competed matches. Mako hungry for more Locally Owned and Operated

Peter Jones When you win by 21 points and sit on top of the Mitre 10 Cup table, it’s hard to be too critical of your performance. But I’m sure the Tasman Mako camp will be looking harshly at some of their work, despite the 45-24 scoreline against Southland at Lansdowne Park on Sunday afternoon. While nothing can be taken away from a Stags side that tackled their hearts out, the Mako created enough scoring opportunities to run in at least another four or five tries. They pulled off some new moves, which cleverly created space, only for the final pass or cleanout to let them down on many occasions. Their defence also leaked four tries, including two in the final 10 minutes, mirroring the Canterbury game last week and taking the gloss off a seven-try bonus point effort. However, on a balmy Sunday in Blenheim, the positives far outweighed the negatives for the home side. Both prop Ryan Coxon and first five Tim O’Malley, given their first starting opportunity of the season, impressed. Coxon anchored a dominant scrum and carried well, while O’Malley showed good game sense in the 10 jersey and defended strongly.

"We talked a lot about playing the whole 80 minutes this week and we definitely didn’t do that,” said MacDonald. "We were on our heels defensively at time – not pushing forward. Whether that was fatigue or just players switching off, we’ll have to work that one out.” While the Mako will be more than happy to bank five points, especially since they were winless at the same stage last year, they will be under no illusions as to what lies ahead. While their performance could hardly be termed a "wake-up call” it is a timely reminder that every team in the competition is capable of punishing you if you drop your standards. Next up for the Mako is a Saturday evening showdown in Albany with fellow table-toppers North Harbour, a team Tasman have traditionally struggled against. "We are not good enough to turn up and bully teams, we have to bring our A game every week,” warned MacDonald. "You have to get the preparation right off the field each week otherwise you will get second on it.”

The day’s Mako debutant, No 8 Isaiah Miller, also had a day to remember, driving the defensive wall back with ball in hand and hitting hard without it. Ethan Blackadder was again a standout forward, working equally effectively in defence and attack. David Havili showed the benefit of his experience with a strong showing in midfield, while Solomon Alaimalo and Will Jordan were ever-dangerous in broken play, Jordan’s last-gasp individual try a particularly classy effort to send the fans home happy. Young locks Quinten Strange and Pari Pari Parkinson continue to impress, carrying out their core

roles superbly as well as offering clever touches with ball in hand. With their set pieces operating well, the Mako had a solid platform to base their game on. However, the breakdown intensity and accuracy that had served them so well against Canterbury was absent for long periods. After scoring the first try off a forward drive, the Mako leaked two touchdowns to a gutsy opponent who were able to make the most of late offloads. Two tries late in the first spell ensured the home side led at the break, but it was far from the opening 40 the Mako desired. Head coach Leon MacDonald said the message was clear at

halftime, "we just weren’t taking care of the stuff we had talked about doing … we were letting them win the race to the breakdown and coming second there. The players put it on themselves to tidy that area up and I thought we did a better job in the second half, but it was disappointing to lose those little battles in the first half and it kept them right in the game.” The Mako management went to their bench early in the second spell with, as MacDonald explained, a two-fold objective. "We need to manage the minutes of some of the critical players, such as David Havili who is coming off a big load and is in a

Super Club wraps up in Nelson Locally Owned and Operated

The 2018 Super Club wrapped up on Friday night with the Central Pulse winning its inaugural title after beating hosts the Mainland Tactix After five days and twenty games of high-octane international netball, the Wellington side pipped the Tactix 61-56 in a thrilling final at the Trafalgar Centre. Pulse captain Clare Kersten says the win was a perfect way to cap off an incredibly enjoyable week and season. "It’s been exciting to play various styles and we have loved the challenge of the two-point option, it has been a really fun year and this week has been no exception.” She says they hope to do it all again in 2019. During the week-long tournament, teams took a break from the court on Wednesday for a community engagement day. Players were treated to ziplining

Two second-half penalties to Auckland's Birkenhead United has knocked a ten-man Nelson Suburbs out of the Chatham Cup at the penultimate stage. Suburbs matched it with its more illustrious opponents for most of the Chatham Cup semi-final at a packed Saxton Field yesterday afternoon, but a penalty resulting from a Birkenhead free kick 15 minutes into the second half ended up sinking the hosts. The Christian Gray effort was partially saved by Suburbs keeper Corey Wilson, who went the right way, but the ball had enough on it to sneak inside the left-hand upright. The second penalty just minutes before full time was unlucky for the hosts as it appeared the Birkenhead striker simply missed the ball and fell over.
