Extra $350k for Stoke Centre Stoke’s new community centre at Greenmeadows Reserve has one final hurdle to clear before it can become a reality.

Nelson City Council’s community services committee was told on Thursday that the lowest tender price for the build has come in at

$350,000 over budget, and a recommendation that full council approve the additional funding was passed six votes to two.

Committee chair Pete Rainey and Tim Skinner were the only members to oppose it.

The additional $350,000 would bring the total budget for the project to $6,490,000 - but it isn’t

the first cost blow-out. In July last year, the committee agreed to increase the budget for the project from $5.6 to $6.14 million.

“It’s the second budget overrun that’s happened, even before a sod of earth is turned,” said Steve.

“This looks more and more like a project built on sand.”

However, manager capital projects Shane Davies told the committee that the mechanical costs of the green heating and cooling system were underestimated by 50 per cent.

He said that they could cut costs by changing the heating system, but sticking with the green system would save more money longterm.

Other options were removing the proposed cafe space and the dividing doors between the main hall and meeting spaces.

The committee were also told that the neighbouring St Barnabas Church land will no longer be available for the project, but it will not affect the location and design of the proposed facility.

Councillor Mike Ward strongly supported the approval of the additional funding, saying the building will “calm Stoke down”.

“It needs to be an iconic building, not just any building,” he said.

“This should be the anchor activity in Stoke.

It is the choice we have made and it’s up to us to get on with it - let’s build it.”

Mayor Rachel Reese echoed his thoughts, saying that Stoke is “ready and waiting” for the centre.

Councillors Ruth Copeland and Matt Lawrey also voted to get the project green-lighted.

The proposed community centre has been strongly supported by Stoke Seniors, Stoke Rugby Club, Stoke Tennis Club and Nelson Cricket, who have said they were “delighted” with the plans at a meeting of community groups back in May. But Tim Skinner said he struggled to support an additional $350,000.

“The costs seem to have grown and grown at some stage we need to cut some costs,” he said.

Speaking after the meeting, mayoral candidate Pete Rainey said he “doesn’t agree with spending any more on this project”.

“Now that the land next door at St Barnabas has been made unavailable, I think the whole project has lost the potential to really make a difference for Stoke,” he said.

“It’s far too constrained, squeezed in between a car park and the tennis courts, and doesn’t serve the majority of Stoke people. I’d far rather the project was scaled down, and redeveloped in order to build new rooms for Stoke Rugby, Tennis and Cricket, with the resulting savings being put towards improving the Stoke Memorial Hall.”

And that’s just what the kiwi team did, reaching a top speed of 166mph and breaking two world land speed records.

The first record was set during tuning runs in the I/ BGALT class, where the mini smashed the 133.896mph (215.485kph) record, speeding down the track at 144.033mph (231.799kph).

The team then switched classes to I/BFALT - a change from petrol to methanol, and on a tuning run for methanol broke the 140.458mph (226.045kph) class record with a speed of 158.039mph (254.339kph).

They were unable to back this up due to a hose fault on their next run.

Once the problem was solved they went out again and qualified at 153.710mph (247.372kph), and backed it up the next morning for a record result of 156.006mph (251.067kph).

Team member Mike Wilson says that, despite being a bunch of low-key kiwi blokes, the team were ecstatic when they set the new records.

Ethan earns Wairua Warrior double Jacob Page The best way to train for the Wairua Warrior is to train on a children’s playground, according to winner Ethan Helliwell.

The 25-year-old won the first ever winter version of the 10.5km obstacle race near Cable Bay, on Saturday.

He completed the course, which included balance beams, monkey bars, sandbag carries and muddy rope climbs, in one hour and two minutes - more than five minutes ahead of his nearest challenger.

Ethan won the annual summer event earlier in the year and will now set his sights on a first Coast to Coast single day effort early next year.

“Jumping in the river was a big shock to the system, the cold air on your lungs and the ice on the balancing stages made it very tricky, on top of there being more mud.”

Ethan says he’s been running 40km a week in preparation for the event, but battled the flu last week.

“To be honest, the best training you can do would be if you found a school with a decent playground.

“They have the monkey bars and tyres and everything you can have a play on.

“I’m fortunate I have mates who are keen to go and play around on playgrounds and go train in the bush.”

Nelson MMA fighter Dawn Chalmers credited her training for making the course manageable on her way to victory in the women’s event in a time of one hour and 24 minutes and 58 seconds.

Spooners Tunnel to reopen A temporary bracing structure will be installed at the northern entrance to Spooners Tunnel within the next month, allowing the popular cycling and walking route to reopen to the public.

Last month, the Tasman District Council closed the tunnel after a routine structural inspection identified movement in a small crack at the northern entrance.

Council acting engineering services manager, Dwayne Fletcher, says a temporary bracing system would allow the tunnel to safely reopen while a permanent solution was identified.

Andrew Board Chelsea Routhan’s stray finger has cost Nelson Netball its manager.

Chelsea has been the centre manager at Nelson Netball for three years and says she “loves her job”. But when she inadvertently touched the wrong button while searching TradeMe she found an advert for her new job – programme director of Big Brothers Big Sisters.

She says the role struck her as an exciting challenge, so she decided to apply.

“It was a really tough decision because I love my job and I’ve really enjoyed it. But when I saw this opportunity I thought ‘how can I not?’”

During Chelsea’s tenure player numbers have increased in both senior and junior grades, and in early September Nelson will host its first ever netball test match when the Silver Ferns host Jamaica.

Nelson Netball’s board chair, Julie Baxendine, says they will be sad to see Chelsea go.

“The Board are extremely grateful to Chelsea for all that she has done to lift

Chemical spill in Motueka: A mother and her young baby had to be decontaminated after chemicals were spilled on Motueka’s main street last Wednesday. A group of ten people were decontaminated by the Nelson Fire Service after the chemical Hydrogen cynamide was spilled off the back of a truck just before lunchtime.

The main street was closed for several hours while it was cleaned up by the fire service. Hydrogen Cynamide, more commonly known as Hi-Cane, is often sprayed on kiwifruit vines.

Kate Russell Nelson beer and food lovers get ready - Food Truck Fridays are coming to Founders this spring.

The idea is a collaboration between Founders Brewery and the Nelson Food People – a collective of local food carts and stalls.

It will take place on the first Friday of every month, kicking off on September 2nd, from 5-8pm.

Italian, South African and Sri Lankan cuisines are just some of what will be on offer at the first evening – this includes the Italian Pizza Garage, which Stefano Bonazza and Nigel Bain have been operating out of their Bridge St garage since April.

Stefano and Nigel are the driving force behind the Nelson Food Group and say that they started the collective to get more of a ‘food truck market’ happening in Nelson, and the evening will provide options for everyone.

“We tossed around the idea of a food truck evening for a while – and we’ve done a few things at Founders Brewery before. And of course, they make great beer," says Nigel.

Founders Brewery have two new seasonal releases on offer, including a toffee hop biscuity brown ale, and a retro release of an old favourite – Fair Maiden A.P.A. Founders Brewery bar manager Bex Richards says she encourages Nelsonians to come and enjoy the atmosphere, as the weather starts to warm up again.

“There will be plenty of outdoor heating to keep people warm until the hot weather kicks in, and we’re also planning on organising some live music in the coming months.”

A group of locals are rallying to raise money for a former Waimea College student who is battling cancer.

Katy Cobb (nee Delaney), 31, was first diagnosed with cervical cancer in March 2015 after experiencing symptoms for a number of weeks. Her intuition told her it was something severe, and sure enough she was told that she had a 5cm tumour on her cervix.

After undergoing an aggressive combination of chemotherapy and radiation, the cancer remained, so Katy and her longtime Australian partner Cobby decided to go ahead with their already delayed wedding plans, and were married in January this year at their home in Mossman, Queensland.

The wedding had already been delayed after Cobby suffered a life-changing stroke two years previous.

Katy continued receiving treatment in Brisbane where her immediate family reside, but it is believed that the radiation damage that she suffered has become a barrier for any

Sebina Bastion, Joanne Rawson, Lucy Ashton and Marianne HartBiggs have been hard at work rallying support via donations for a silent auction in the hope of raising as much money as they can.

The quiz will be held at the Hope Recreational Hall on Saturday, September 17 from 7pm. Tasman Auto Electrics are donating a signed warriors jersey for the silent auction, Reid Helicopters together with Tall Poppy Real Estate have donated a helicopter lunch flight to Awaroa and Air Chathams have donated a “once in a lifetime” trip for two on their DC-3 aircraft.

Diners win Fiji trip

A Nelson couple had an anxious wait before celebrating a free trip to Fiji.

Richard Hadfield and Daisy Potter were entered into the draw to win a $4100 trip to Fiji after they attended one of the Feast for the Senses events recently.

Because Daisy was sick, they didn’t attend the Feast for the Senses finale at the Nelson Provincial Museum last Friday night, when the winner was announced. It wasn’t until Monday that they got the official word.

“We saw it on Facebook on the Friday night but didn’t want to get too excited until we been told, so it was a long weekend,” says Daisy.

On Monday, Uniquely Nelson manager Simon Duffy confirmed the good news that they were the winners.

Feast for the Senses in an event run by Uniquely Nelson, offering a different dining experience in the heart of Nelson. The event runs over six weeks on week nights and Simon says this year was a huge success with many of the nights selling out weeks in advance. “It was a great success and next year will be even bigger.”

Richard and Daisy will be taking their five year old son on holiday with them and are hoping to head away in early October.

The prize was supported by Hello World Nelson, Fiji Airlines and Treasure Island Fiji.

Rural fire volunteers recognised Simon Bloomberg The dedication of Glen-Hira volunteer rural fire fighter Ian Thomas, who spent hundreds of hours helping to build a new smoke-chaser, was recognised at the annual Waimea Rural Fire Authority awards held at Seifried Estate.

Every year, 130 volunteer fire fighters belonging to nine rural fire forces around Nelson and Tasman spend thousands of hours training, fighting vegetation fires and attending vehicle accidents. Last Friday, the Waimea Rural Fire Authority, which oversees the region's rural fire forces, paid tribute to the significant contribution the volunteers make to their communities.

And it was no surprise that one of the major awards went to Ian, who was named VRFF Member of the Year for his work on the force's new smoke-chaser. A smoke-chaser is a first response vehicle that carries a small crew and is fitted out with a water tank, hoses and hand tools that allow it go to places that are inaccessible to larger fire trucks.

"I dread to think how many hours I spent on it," Ian says. "We did the first design concept back in December and we finished it in June, and there were a lot of hours in-between.

"It's critical for getting a crew to a fire or a accident. It's designed for getting up tracks where the tanker might not be able to go and it can be driven by anyone with a car licence, which is a big advantage - you need a heavy trade licence for a tanker."

Ian says the new Toyota Hilux was fitted with a 500 litre water tank, a hose reel, pump, and locker for fire-fighting equipment. It was subsidised by the Rural Fire Network and Nelson City Council, while the Glen-Hira VRFF raised additional funds to transform it into a smokechaser.

The Glen-Hira volunteers stated in their nomination that the "time Ian spent on the new smoke-chaser certainly goes far beyond what would be expected of the average volunteer, with much of this carried out at his own personal expense. His design ideas and attention to detail has resulted in something that is a pleasure to operate and will serve the GlenHira Force for many years to come."

Colin Eggers, who has been a member of the Tasman VRFF for 15 years, the last 11 as the controller, received a Significant Contribution Award. Colin's wife Jeanette Eggers was given a special mention for helping establish Tasman VRFF as a non-profit trust.

John McKie from Wainui VRFF and Robert Rosser from Upper Takaka were also commended in the VRFF Member of the Year Award, while Ted Ford was shortlisted in the Significant Contribution Award.

Appleby's Ken Connor won the Training Award, Harry Faber of Brightwater won the Health and Safety Award, Lakes VRFF received the Community Engagement Award.

Waimea Rural Fire Authority principal rural fire officer Ian Reade paid tribute to the award winners and all 130 rural fire force volunteers, saying "these guys are the backbone of what we do. They put in a huge amount of time, not just going to jobs but everything that leads into it.

They can be very proud of what they do and the service they provide - we'd be stuffed without them."

Met online, now for the wedding Jessie Johnston Chloe Bartlett and Chereez Koen first spoke online, first met in South Africa, but will get married in Nelson next summer.

The couple were among dozens that made their way to the Nelson Bridal Show on Sunday, looking for help from wedding experts.

The show featured over 50 exhibitors from cake bakers, hair and makeup specialists, and photographers.

Chloe and Chereez attended the show with their bridesmaids, Katie van der

Velden and Jen Chaddock, to pick up as many ideas as possible. The couple met online after being part of the same Facebook page, Chloe living here in Nelson while Chereez was in South Africa.

“Chloe posted something one day and I invited her to be friends, we started talking and that’s it,” says Chereez.

They didn’t meet in person until six months later. “I flew to South Africa,” says Chloe.

“We were just friends then but we did have feelings for each other, so we wanted to meet each other first and see how it went from there.”

Chereez now lives here permanently after the pair decided to tie the knot. “I did a treasure hunt type thing around the house and then, at the end there was champagne and everything, and I had this big speech planned - which didn’t happen,” says Chloe.

“She just said, ‘you know that I love you, right,’ and I said ‘yeah’ then she reached for the ring and asked, ‘will you marry me’,” says Chereez.

The show was also about supporting the community, with proceeds going to the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter.

2016 SISS NETBALL South Island Secondary Schools Netball

Nelson’s Saxton Stadium will play host to the largest netball tournament in the country when the South Island Secondary Schools event starts next week.

Tournament co-ordinator Marilyn Milne says more than 80 teams, 900 players and 86 umpires will compete at the 54th edition of the event, from August 29 to September 1 during the traditional winter tournament week.

While traditional local heavyweights Nelson College for Girls and Waimea College will look to be near the top of the A grade once again as well as Nayland and Garin College, the region will also be represented by Collingwood, Golden Bay, Tapawera, Motueka and Murchison, across the three grades.

The A grade will be played inside Saxton Stadium while the B and C grades will be contested on the outside courts.

Marilyn says the tournament is where the next generation of New Zealand netballers get to showcase themselves.

“This really is the proving ground for girls who want to become Silver Ferns.

“Even players who want to make New Zealand age-group teams or New Zealand A get their start at this tournament.”

Growing community – a story about compost The Community Gardens in Burrell Park recently received three new compost bins from Nelson City Council. The bins are used to compost kitchen waste from the adjacent Tahunanui Community Centre, as well as garden waste, and are helping the garden to be self-sufficient.

The gardens are cared for by volunteers, so as well as providing food, they are supporting people who share an interest in gardening as well as contributing to their community.

The volunteers have a zero waste policy so that everything is re-used and recycled within the park.

"It’s great to see so much food being grown in the gardens,” says Katie Hughes, Tahunanui Community Centre Activator. "And as an added bonus we can now compost all the preschool and playgroup food waste too."

The Centre has nine additional bins to give away as prizes for its Spring Fest event on 25 September – a community event with a free lunch and activities – to celebrate Nelson as the most neighbourly city in New Zealand, and to promote the community gardens.

Trafalgar Centre update The Trafalgar Centre will be partially reopened again next month to accommodate two exciting events; the Silver Ferns game and the Snaparock concert. which will provide a link right through from the northern extension to the backstage area, has been framed and is being roofed.

For the northern extension, the steel framing is now in place and the roof is complete so it is really taking shape.

Great progress is being made with the landscaping work in Rutherford Park, which will complement the redeveloped Trafalgar Centre. Several sections of the footpath are in place and most of the concrete for the plaza area outside the entrance has been poured.

While construction is still in progress in the main stadium, particularly at the northern end, it will be reopened temporarily to accommodate these events. Much like the Giants games earlier in the year, there will still be some restrictions in place in parts of the site for health and safety reasons.

There will be more exciting events to follow later in the year, when the Centre will be complete and fully reopened.

Final touches to improve the vehicle entrance from Paru Paru Road are underway and this area should be looking good for the capacity crowd who will be watching the Silver Ferns in action on 11 September.

Applications open for community grants

Applications will open for Community Investment Fund Grants and Youth Development Agreements this Friday 26 August.

Metal detector enthusiasts are reminded not to dig holes on Council reserves or sports fields.

Funding is available for not-forprofit community organisations to apply for, where they meet the funding criteria outlined in the guideline documents relevant to the application.

Community Investment Fund Grants are targeted towards social development activities and are open for applications up to $2,500.

From the week starting 17 October collections will be every two weeks, with glass and mixed recycling both collected on the same day. Mixed recycling goes in the wheelie bin while glass goes in the crate you are already using.

Check the address on the sticker on the side of the bin to make sure it is for your property. The sticker will also show your new collection day.

Your new bin will come with an information booklet that covers everything you need to know about the upcoming changes to the recycling collection service. Please take the time to read it and get ready for the new service starting 17 October.

Record resource consent year for Council One hundred percent of resource consent applications for the 2015 – 16 year were processed within the timeframe required by national legislation.

This year, non-notified consent numbers reached 450, the highest in seven years, and up 17 percent from last year’s total. The average processing timeframe was 12 days.

Council’s Strategy and Environment Group Manager Clare Barton says that the team has been able to deliver exceptional service to its customers.

“This is a huge improvement from nine years ago, when there was 45% compliance processing resource consents taking an average of 30 days.”

Council has streamlined its process and offers pre-application meetings to ensure there are early conversations about applications.

Air Quality breach Council’s air quality monitoring recently recorded a breach of National Environmental Standards for Air Quality. On 2 July, 2016, an average 24 hour PM10 concentration of 51 micrograms per cubic metre was recorded in Airshed A (Nelson South). The National Standard for air quality is 50 micrograms per cubic metre.

RSA remembers Vietnam battle Simon Bloomberg Nelson's Vietnam veterans paid their respects to the New Zealanders and Australians involved in one of the biggest engagements of the Vietnam War at a commemoration service at the Ernest Rutherford Retirement Village in Stoke.

The Battle of Long Tan was fought in horrendous conditions in a rubber plantation near Phuoc Tuy Province in South Vietnam, on August 18, 1966. The Royal New Zealand Artillery's 161st Battery fired the guns in the battle that helped save three platoons of Australian soldiers - 18 Australians were killed and 24 wounded, while at least 245 Viet Cong were killed in the fierce fighting.

Last Thursday, 15 of Nelson and Tasman's Vietnam veterans marked the 50th anniversary of the battle in a solemn service at Ernest Rutherford.

Although none of the veterans were involved in Long Tan, former 161st Battery member Neville Manins says "we were

certainly made aware of what our guys had done there" when he served in Vietnam.

"The battle was quite early in the piece, so I missed it," Neville says. "I was over there from 1968 to 1969, but there was still a lot of pride in the Battery's role at Long Tan - they fired all the shells that saved the Aussies."

Neville says the 161st Battery's role at Long Tan was recognised when it received the South Vietnamese Presidential Unit Citation of The Cross of Gallantry With Palm Leaf and the US Presidential Unit Citation Award.

Ernest Rutherford resident and Vietnam veteran Rusty Taylor, who helped organise the commemoration, says New Zealand's part in Long Tan is widely recognised in Australia.

"I was New Zealand's instructor at the Australian Royal Military College at Duntroon at the time, so I had definitely heard all about Long Tan," Rusty says. "It was a fierce battle with hand-to-hand fighting and it saved our base at Nui

Dat." Australian veteran and Nelson RSA member, Kiwi Sturges, says the Battle of Long Tan epitomised the ANZAC spirit that exists between Australia and New Zealand soldiers.

"It wasn't spoken about too much but it was typical of the Australian and New Zealand comradeship," Kiwi says. "You don't want to glorify war, but there was a lot of pride in the way we worked together to win the battle."

One of Nelson's highest ranking returned servicemen, Colonel Ken Fenton, who was commander of New Zealand's V Force from 1968-1970, says the Battle of Long Tan was the last "big engagement in combat" involving New Zealand soldiers. Nelson RSA president and Vietnam representative Barry Pont says he is delighted the sacrifices of the servicemen involved in the battle have been recognised. He says the 50th anniversary of Long Tan was also commemorated in Wellington, Canberra and South Vietnam.

It will facilitate Nelson’s traffic, get the region’s products to the port and permit us to develop Rocks Rd with a shared footpath/cycleway. That’s why I argued for a fair and impartial investigation into the NZTA Southern link project. Some didn’t agree with my stance, but maintaining it upheld my commitment to Nelson’s future and that of the whole region.

Mel Courtney - With a passion for Nelson and the wellbeing of our community, I’m standing for election to the City Council. A strong, united council that will see our city grow into the future is what we need.As Nelson's MP for six years, I carved a reputation of standing up for our region. Tim was also amongst several brave locals who put their bodies on the line for the community in the Fight for Victory charity boxing event, which raised over $100,000.

From day one, Tim has advocated for the needs and growth of local businesses and pushed

hard to successfully achieve free parking, and says there is still plenty to do to improve the vitality within the CBD. He’s been a strong consistent voice at the table and has 100 per cent attendance of council meetings. Tim has proven to be a councillor who puts his heart and soul into the position.

Pete Rainey- I’m a fourth generation Nelsonian and I’m standing for the mayoralty because I want Nelson to be a better place to live, for my family and for everyone. This means initiatives such as warmer homes, more support for social housing, and improving facilities so we can be out there enjoying what Nelson’s famous for. Phillipa and I have two young sons and I want to see more encouragement for innovative businesses so there are jobs here for our young people.

Nelson’s Brian Bishop is hopefull of leading the New Zealand Pistol Shooting Team to a medal at the Australasian International Practical Shooting Confederation (IPSC) Hand Gun Championships in Bali, Indonesia, next week.

The 27-strong team flew out on Sunday to acclimatise with the Cable Bay Club shooter also taking on the team manager role.

IPSC is an action-based style of shooting, the pistols and ammunition are real, and the safety record and standard are second to none.

Brian is competing in the open class and, along with one other person, was part of the fourmember team that came third in the last Australasian IPSC Hand Gun Championships.

Brian has been part of the New Zealand setup for the past six years. He says the athletic nature

and moving targets make for a good mental challenge.

“Some stages are really complicated and you have to work out what is the best way for you to get around the course and take the best shot.

“Every course is different and the way you approach it is different for every individual.

Brian has been “hooked” on pistol shooting since the first time he tried it, 20 years ago.

“The guys that you shoot with are awesome, but I love the challenge of going to a course and trying to work out mentally what is required for me to be successful.

“You only get one shot and I like that.”

Brian travels the country to compete at various regional events to make selection for the New Zealand team.

“You have to be calm, you’re moving with a full firearm.

“You need to think on your feet and go with it, because no two competitions are the same.”

The 48-year-old says he’d like a placing in the team’s event.

“We achieved that at the last Australasian Championships and there are a couple of us who are returning.”

The former rower and hockey player says he enjoys the sport because you can still do it to a high level at an older age.

“I’ve shot against guys in their 70s and, while they don’t move rapidly, they’re deadly accurate.

“The top guys in training can shoot 30,000 to 40,000 rounds a year. I’m more around 10,000.”

Brian says he tries to get to Cable Bay or Motueka to train every week, as well as mentor new members.

No one is getting their hand on Kane Hames’ first All Black jersey.

The Tasman Makos prop played 25 minutes off the bench in the 42-8 thrashing of the Wallabies on Saturday night. The 27-year-old says it was the culmination of a childhood dream.

However, five months ago when he had no contract and he was battling knee issues, his All Black destiny looked more like a pipe dream.

“It’s hard to put into words,” Hames says. “Running out was a moment I’ve thought about over and over since I was very young.

“It wouldn’t matter if I play 20, 30 or 40 games it would be hard to see me swapping any All Blacks jersey I put on, but certainly not my first.

NelsoN College New ZealaNd 1st xi football Nelson College first xi peaking for national tournament.

The Nelson College first XI football team are peaking just at the right time.

As the team prepares to defend its national title in Papamoa at the end of the month, the schoolboys knocked off the Nelson Bays league winners a fortnight ago.

Team manager Dave Tinker says there are nothing but positive signs.

“We’ve got better as the season has gone on and to topple the champions shows we are on the right track.

“Everyone is fit so now it’s just a case of staying healthy and looking forward to the tournament.

Nelson will not have it easy, with a game on the Saturday before the tournament then having two games on the opening day.

Dave admits the team’s fate is likely to be decided early on day two.

The team has a tough pool with St Peter’s College on Cambridge,

Napier Boys’ High School and tournament favourites Saint Kentigern College from Auckland.

“We would like to finish in the top two in our pool and make the quarter-finals so we will need to start well given our draw.”

The team wished to thank all of its sponsors including the Nelson College Old Boys’ Association, the PTA, Mainland Foundation, everyone who had helped with the fundraising during the quiz night and the sponsors supporting this page.

The team comprises multiple nationalities which Dave believes is one of the reasons the team struggled to gel in the early stages of the season. With so many players used to different styles of football, an emphasis has been put on communication to help speed things along.

Styles from Europe the United Kingdom and the Pacific Islands have all merged into the 2016 team that will look to repeat their 2015 team’s

heroics where they won the national crown on home soil.

The efforts had helped cut the cost of the trip for each person from $900 to $300.

Kelsey Smith laments Alex Frame claims Nelson Cycle Classic Alex Frame made a winning to New Zealand racing missed medal chance return after missing selection for Jacob Page

There was no looking forward for Nelson’s Kelsey Smith as she lamented the Black Sticks’ second consecutive fourth place finish at an Olympic Games.

After being outclassed 3-0 by eventually gold medallists Great Britain in the semi-finals, the Kiwis were unable to make the most of their chances against Germany to lose 2-1.

The 22-year-old has several more Olympic campaigns ahead of her, but her thoughts were with her more experienced colleagues including fellow Waimea College Old Girl, Anita McLaren.

“We didn’t make the most of the chances we created.

“I really feel for the girls who experienced this kind of disappointment four years ago.

“The mood is pretty down at this point.”

Kelsey gave herself a pass mark for her efforts during the tournament, which included a goal against Spain and one against Australia in a quarter-final victory.

After missing the final cut to make the national endurance track squad for Rio, Frame returned home from his European base and, riding for the Mike Greer Homes Cycling team, Frame won a large bunch sprint ahead of Tom Hubbard and team mates Ben Johnstone and Tim Rush to win the 125 kilometre elite race in three hours and eight minutes.

“The Mike Greer boys just controlled it and we looked after ourselves,” Frame says.

“We did everything we meant to, got the job done, rolled Tom [Hubbard] at the finish and Ben was third, so it was a good day.”

In some consolation for Tom, his second placing sees him take a narrow lead in the series

After last year’s successful 3-0 tour of Timaru and Christchurch, the team first faced Marlborough boys this year. They went over to Blenheim and won 73-0. At the start of July a two match trip was made to the North Island. The first match against Feilding High School was won 70-10. The second match was very challenging against Palmerston North Boys. The team were 17-0 down after 20 minutes. They fought back hard and dominated the second half managing to carve out a 21-17 win. The boys have been working very hard in develop-

ing their rugby and the majority have been in the College’s Rugby Academy this year. Next week the boys are travelling to Dunedin to compete in the U15 South Island Invitation Tournament. They face four matches in four days. The boys are also continuing to fundraise to enter the Gold Coast Rugby Carnival in July next year. We hope that the matches and tours that have been arranged will prepare the boys well for when they reach the First and Second XV’s.
