A Nelson shopper will be $5000 richer by the end of September thanks to a new shopping promotion for the city. Shop Nelson and Win is a Nelson Weekly promotion, in conjunction with Uniquely Nelson. Fifty businesses within Nelson are taking part in the competition. To be in with a chance to win, all
you have to do is buy something at one of the participating businesses, fill in a quick entry form and that’s it. The cash has to be won at the end of the competition and it has to go to a local shopper. Nelson Weekly managing director Andrew Board says the competition is a great addition to the city. “Our friends at the Waimea
Weekly have run this competition in Richmond for almost ten years, and it is always a huge success. We’re delighted that we can now bring it to Nelson and that so many businesses have come on board and are getting excited about it.” The competition opened on Monday and runs for six weeks. Uniquely Nelson manager Simon
Duffy says it’s great to have such a popular promotion for the city. “It’s a big incentive for people to come and shop in Nelson city, along with the great businesses we have here.” A list of participating businesses is on page 7 of this paper, or you can look out for the Shop Nelson and Win posters in the windows of the businesses taking part.

Nelson’s rental crisis reaching ‘critical’ point

Charles Anderson A jump in rental prices and a fall in available properties is causing an affordable accommodation shortage that has reached crisis levels, say community advocates. The cost of the average rental in the Nelson region has jumped 15 per cent in the last two years while listings have fallen almost 20 per cent, according to figures provided by Trade Me. “It’s critical,” says Voice Nelson’s Mary Ellen O’Connor. “It’s absolutely critical.” The Trade Me figures show that in June 2015 the average price for a rental property in the region was $350. However, over the last two years that has risen sharply - hitting $395 in Nelson and $410 in Tasman. In the same time, the number of rentals in the region has dropped even more dramatically - causing a shortage of affordable homes. “It’s very bad - the lack of affordable housing is awful,” Mary Ellen says. She has heard from families who each week must decide whether they purchase food or pay the power bill. A survey her organisation, Voice Nelson, undertook in 2015 found

that more than 50 per cent of respondents paid more than 50 per cent of household income in rent. “Mould, damp and condensation were endemic.” She says some families would spend nothing on heating and wrap themselves in sleeping bags to keep warm. “And it’s only gotten worse.” Bayleys Nelson rental divisional manager Tonia Allan says that unlike previous years there has not been any quiet period in the rental market. She says it’s a concern about the number of good quality lower cost housing in the region. “It’s always a concern that, especially for kids, you want a stable roof over their heads in a house that is clean tidy and

warm.” Tonia says there are plenty of houses that don’t fit that bill, but her company is not interested in them. She says she supports a warrant of fitness on homes, but believes the Residential Tenancy Act needs to put more onus on tenants to be responsible for their rentals. Carrie Mozena of the Nelson Tasman Housing Trust says over the last 30 years the rate of rental price increase has far outstripped incomes. “So people who have low paid work or shift work or parttime work don’t have a hope.” She says Nelson has also suffered a dearth of affordable housing building. Apart from the trust’s 44 properties there have been none in the last 20 years. “People who approach us are spending 50 to 70 per cent of their weekly income on rent. That is diabolical.”

Brook Sanctuary vandalised Kate Russell The Brook Sanctuary has been vandalised ahead of its pest removal operation with staff believing two people have broken in after cutting holes in its fence. The drop of the poison brodifacoum was planned to go ahead yesterday morning, but due to scheduling issues with helicopters it was cancelled. Nearby neighbours were no-
tified of the drop on Saturday afternoon. However, on Sunday, it was discovered that two holes were cut in the pest-proof fence, one large enough to accommodate a person, along with two tracks leading into the sanctuary. Sanctuary Trust general manager Hudson Dodd believes that the people are still inside, as of Monday evening. A search and rescue team is
working to locate them. Hudson says they have repaired everything with the help from Nelmac, and have reported the acts of vandalism to the police, which is now investigating. “We expected peaceful protest but were shocked by the level of vandalism and wilful damage.” Yesterday morning, two security gates located on the access road to the helicopter landing site were locked and sealed
with glue. Two pine trees were also found felled and placed across the road. Secure fencing at the helicopter landing site had also been totally dismantled and scattered in the surrounding forest. Members of the Brook Sanctuary Community Group, which has been attempting legal action to stop the drop, could not be reached for comment.

A Nelson house-building company is planning to give away thousands of dollars to the community when it donates the proceeds from one of their new homes to charity. Orange Residential Homes was this week rebranded as Homes by Orange and, to celebrate the milestone, launched its Build for Charity fundraising campaign. The Richmond-based company will build a $258,000 house on a section in the Katania Heights near Brightwater for cost and donate the proceeds of the sale to the Child Cancer Foundation Nelson, Nelson SPCA and the Fifeshire Foundation. Homes by Orange co-owner and general manager Jo Neale says they do something for charity every year and this year wanted to make it fun by letting the public decide the supreme winner. The

Jo says the house will be completed by the end of next year and auctioned once it’s finished. The public can vote for their favourite charity on line at homesbyorange.co.nz or cast a bonus vote at the Homes by Orange show home at 43 Hill St, Richmond or their offices at 264 Queen St. Voting closes on October 31 this year.

One of Nelson’s oldest kindergartens is closing a 55-year-long chapter at its current site and starting a new one – just a hop skip and a jump up the road. Hundreds of Nelsonians have been through Rutherford Street Kindergarten, which has been at 173 Rutherford St since 1962. But early last year it was told by its landlord that it could not renew its lease. The kindergarten has now been given the green light to relocate to 233 Rutherford St – the former Rutherford St Chapel, after an expensive year-long battle to gain resource consent. The community-based kindergarten has moved a number of times in its history - to Bishop’s School, then to the cathedral’s Sunday school rooms, to its current location, and now the chapel. Manager and senior teacher Mary Davies, who’s been there more than a decade, says the new location will be bigger, sunnier and more visible. “No one really knows where we are now – we’re so hidden away, but the new building will really stand out. It’s going to be great – we are very excited.”
All going well, work will start on site within the next two months and the kindergarten will shift in February 2018. Mary says the inside of the building will only need minor work before its ready to shift in to. The really exciting work will be happening outside, with the development of a child-inspired playground. “We’ve been taking children for walks down there and we’ve now got a book filled with children’s ideas of what they would like to have at the new site,” she says. “It’s their centre, so they need a say. They want some water play, so there definitely will be lots of that.” Fundraising and grants will help fund the playground, as well as heat pumps and other necessities. As part of the move, the kindergarten has been collecting stories of its past from previous families to take its history with them to the new location. “We want to acknowledge the past and that history as part of the shift, and we’re taking a lot from the current centre with us – there is a big mural we had done which we’ll take.” And Mary is certain “it will be a bit emotional” leaving. “We’ve had a long association with this site, so we’ll have a bit of sorrow - but it’s also about moving onto the next phase, which is fabulous.”

She is 95, the former mayoress of Kaiapoi, and has the greenest thumbs you’ll ever see. Mabel McAllister has been interested in gardening her whole life. But after dedicating her life to beautifying Kaiapoi she’s now turned her focus on Nelson. Mabel has become a regular volunteer for the Nelson Central Garden Group after moving to Stoke following the Christchurch earthquakes. boom, boom, potted them all up in a flash. “She kept me motoring, I was mixing the compost and she kept saying, another pottle, another pottle, she would’ve done around 500 plants, I was exhausted by the time she was finished.” “They didn’t think I could do it,” says Mabel. “They were definitely shocked by the end of it.” Because of her health, Mabel was unable to attend last year’s show but is looking forward to seeing all the displays and blooms filling up the Stoke Methodist Church. “I’ll definitely be there this year, it’s going to be marvellous, I’m looking forward to seeing all the displays.” For the first time, the Spring Flower Show will bring together 17 gardening groups and ten churches to cover the church and car park in blooming displays and stalls. The show will feature unique and unusual plants, a collectables corner, church floral art displays, and stalls with a variety of plants and cut flowers for sale including roses and orchids from the Heritage Rose Club and the Orchid Society. “We’re a lot bigger this year, we’ve got so many other groups involved, live music, and an incredible amount of flowers and stalls, it’s going to look fantastic,” says Barry. The Central Garden Group’s Spring Flower Show will run from 9am3pm on Saturday, September 2 at the Stoke Methodist Church. Entry is $3 per person.

As a district court judge for almost two decades Bill Unwin was used to hearing stories. But nothing quite prepared him for the voluntary job he took up in retirement – hearing from those who were at the end of their lives. Bill signed up to be a life writer for the Nelson Tasman Hospice seven years ago and in that time, he has interviewed about 30 people from all different backgrounds. “A lot of people are reticent. Some say they have nothing to say but they always have but everyone has a story.” And Bill says it has been a privilege to hear and record them. “The dignity of people that have been told they have less than 12 months to live, and come to terms with that and then share it, is extraordinary.” The process is beneficial to the patient, as the conversation and recollection is therapeutic, but
it also gives family members a chance to hear stories that would have been lost too. To prepare himself for the job Bill had to go through an extensive interview and then training to make sure he was a good fit. He spends about an hour a week with a patient but much of the time is spent transcribing interviews. “One of the best moments is reading the story back to them and watch them lie back and smile,” Bill says. Bill was made companion of the Queen's Service Order for services to the judiciary in 2010. “It is something that you have to give back to the community. If you’ve had a life like I have, you have to. It’s a wonderful scheme.” Nelson Tasman Hospice is embarking on its most ambitious project in its 30-year history – a new $11.5 million hospice at Suffolk Rd. ‘Old lumpy’ skatepark to get makeover

Charles Anderson The skatepark at by the Trafalgar Centre has long been neglected – a poor cousin to the much younger and slicker creation at Neale Park. But all that is about to change thanks to an initiative being led by the Nelson Youth Council. Known as “old lumpy” the skatepark technically does have a paint job – but it’s mostly graffiti with the odd bit of profanity. “So, we want to take ownership of it,” says youth council member Jenna Stallard. “That is something we can do to make it better.” Now the gates are open on a competition for anyone under the age of 24 to submit a design that will be painted on the park. “We are really open to ideas,” says fellow youth council member Emma Edwards. “It could be anything.” The winner not only will have their mark forever emblazoned on “old lumpy” but they will also have the choice of a $200 Cheapskates voucher or a group trip to the trampoline park at Tahunanui. Youth council member Campbell Rollo says anecdotally the skatepark is one of the oldest full cast concrete parks in the country so it has a bit of history attached to it. The competition closes on September 11. Entry forms will available at Nelson City Council customer services desk or from any college in the region. The form will also be on the Youth Council Facebook page.

Hair on display at regional comp Brittany Spencer
Five of Nelson’s best hair stylists have snipped and crimped their way to a chance at competing for the coveted New Zealand Hair Stylist of the Year in October. The New Zealand Association of Registered Hairdressers regional competition saw sixteen hair stylists create runway ready hairstyles in presentation and live events at NMIT on Sunday. Winning the live events and earning a spot in the supreme competition are HairCraft’s Hayleigh Hamilton, NMIT student Vivo Hair and Beauty hair stylist Kayla Pope took out the Hair by Night live event, Renee Sturgeon, Kayla Pope from VIVO creating a tall, textured look for her model Amy Jones. Boating safety course for women, Tuesday, July 25: Maureen May of Coastguard Nelson says their boating safety course, ‘Suddenly in Charge’ was absolutely fantastic with almost 90 people wanting to take part. While only 40 were able to attend the first session, held on Wednesday, August 2, Maureen says a second course will take place on Tuesday, September 26, which is already fully booked. Organisers were overwhelmed with the response and if there are still more ladies keen to learn after the second course, a third will be organised for October. If their second course remains fully booked, they expect to raise $2500 for Coastguard Nelson. Record store for the love of music and beer, Tuesday, August 8: Nelson’s newest record store, Family Jewels, has been a roaring success since day one. Owner Grant Smithies says the store has had some extremely enthusiastic people stream through the doors to explore the crates of records, with one customer so inspired by their visit they went away to buy a turntable before coming back to purchase a stack of records. Grant says the atmosphere has been great with people settling in for a long discussion about music over a beer. People have also been in to sell or swap their records, while others are on the lookout for second-hand turntables to buy so they can once again enjoy their record collection. Car on test drive goes up in flames
Brittany Spencer It was meant to be a bargain but it turned into the test drive from hell. At $2500 the silver Volkswagen Passat might have looked like a good deal. But at about 2.30pm yesterday, the prospective new owner was driving along Princes Drive when she noticed the oil light flick on. Moments later the engine caught fire and the woman pulled over to the side of the road. Before long, the whole front of the car was enveloped with flames. Fire crews arrived soon after, pouring water onto the vehicle. All of the occupants of the vehicle walked away unharmed. One of the first on the scene, senior station officer Gavin Scott, said flames were coming out of the front of the car but were easy to extin-
guish. “As we came up the road we noticed there was oil on the road so it looks like the car has lost oil out of the motor onto the exhaust or the turbo and it has caught fire.” Car owner Iain Graham said he didn’t know what had happened. “I have no idea. They have got it back to the yard but no decision has been made on anything.” Police managed traffic while a unit from the Nelson Fire Station extinguished the fire and hosed down the car. Princes Drive was temporarily blocked and reduced to one lane, but was soon reopened. The car was left parked on the side of the road, completely chargrilled while the owner organised for it to be towed. It is not clear what decision the test driver made about the purchase. She could not be reached for comment.

Art Expo bursting with variety Brittany Spencer
Nelson woman Lois Moreland has won a trip to Melbourne - just for dining out at one of the Feast for the Senses events. All 462 people who attended an event were automatically entered into the draw to win the three-night trip across the ditch, and Lois says she was “gobsmacked” when she got the call from Uniquely Nelson manager Simon Duffy to say she had won. Lois says she attended one of the moveable feasts with a good friend, and they made a pact that if either of them won the trip they would take each other along with them. Simon says it was another successful year for Feast for the Senses, with record numbers attending. He says next year will be even “bigger and better” with more themes, restaurants and music. Artists flocked to this year’s Art Expo Nelson to showcase their work at one of the South Island’s premier art sales. The expo ran throughout the weekend at the Trafalgar Centre and boasted 116 artists. NMIT student Florence Berthold exhibited her abstract art, which combines acrylics with mixed media. “I just try to be a vessel and create art that connects with something higher than the rational mind.”
Neighbours Margaret McClymont and Betty Dick spent Saturday meandering through the exhibits. “There are some absolutely amazing artworks here,” said Margaret. “When you go to look at them you think you know what the artists have done but you don’t, the mixed media, materials and intricacies of each piece are incredible.” Event organiser Nic Foster said the annual art show was a fantastic success. “We had just a click under 4000
people, significant art sales that rivalled previous years, the visiting artists loved Nelson and I’m really impressed with the variety on show. “In a New Zealand context, I think we’ve had the biggest variety of art media on show - everything from jewellery to beautiful 3D sculptures and the quality is really good this year.” Several large awards were handed out at the expo’s prize giving on Friday night but it was Upper Moutere artist Katie Gold who won the supreme Art Expo Nelson Award.

Mosaic has been bringing a cappella pleasure to audiences for 20 years with their high energy and vibrancy. This 50-strong choir is directed by Shannel Courtney and has been described as one of Nelson hidden treasures. Their repertoire covers most the continents of the world, including songs from the Pacific, with a special focus on African music with its uplifting harmonies and rhythms. Feedback sought on Upper Trafalgar Street temporary closure Council is seeking feedback regarding the potential closure of the upper end of Trafalgar Street for four months over the summer period.
Volunteers stepping up
Council proposes to close the section of Trafalgar Street between Selwyn Place and Hardy Street (Upper Trafalgar Street) to traffic. If feedback is favourable then the first trial would occur between 1 December 2017 and 31 March 2018. Businesses in the area have expressed support for the concept, so Council is now seeking wider feedback to understand if such a closure is wanted. The proposal is open for feedback until 4pm on 31 August 2017.

Update on city amenity bylaw and safety
Lifesaver at Saxton Oval Top of the South Athletics Charitable Trust recently purchased an automated external defibrillator (AED), and this is now available to the public at all times during daylight hours. Survival from cardiac arrest, most often caused by heart attack, depends heavily on rapid access to treatment with a defibrillator. The AED is portable, and has step-by-step voice prompts that allow it to be operated by members of the public. The AED purchase was made possible by a generous grant from the Rata Foundation, and by the support of Jennian Homes and Nelson City Council. Jennian Homes launched an initiative last year in conjunction with the Heart Foundation, to improve community access to
AEDs. By means of bulk purchase they were able to offer units at considerably reduced prices, and have arranged training for the organisations that purchased AEDs. Nelson City Council purchased a smash box for the AED, and this is now mounted outside, on the south eastern wall of Saxton Pavilion, between the oval and athletics track. It is located in the covered concourse and can be accessed via the cul de sac that runs alongside the north eastern end of these facilities.
Council is receiving a number of complaints about the increase in the number of people sleeping and residing on Trafalgar Street. These complaints are about the impact that these people are having on the amenity of our central city and the perceived safety of that area. Council acknowledges these concerns and we will continue to provide information about the steps we are working through to improve city amenity. We reiterate the message that if there are threats to you or another's safety, then it is essential that you contact the Police.
City Amenity Bylaw Update
Saltwater Creek footbridge replacement Council has a long term goal of improving the connections from the city to the sea. Another step in this process is the replacement of the existing narrow Saltwater Creek bridge, connecting the Maitai River walkway with the QEII bridge underpass. This project has been in the planning stages for some time. A design option has now been selected, as shown in the image below. The structure is to be Glulam timber and uses themes found elsewhere along the Maitai River to tie it in.
There will also be a waka theme incorporated which will reflect a waka prow sculpture that is proposed for the nearby landing site. However, the bridge will be understated so as not to cause a possible distraction for motorists on the State Highway. The bridge will be three metres wide to cater for cyclists as well as pedestrians and will form an improved link between the CBD and the waterfront once the new Haven Rd walking and cycling improvements are completed. The bridge is currently going through the detailed design process and the overall aim is for construction to be completed by end of June 2018.
The safety and amenity of the central city remains a high priority for Council. The City Amenity Bylaw addresses these issues and follows a process set out in legislation. This has involved a special consultative procedure, where the public is given the opportunity to submit views on a draft bylaw. 319 submissions were received from the public on this draft bylaw. Following this public consultation, Council heard submissions to the draft City Amenity Bylaw on 21 June 2017. The Council must now take into account the feedback from the community in forming a bylaw. The next stage of the bylaw process is for Council to make decisions on those submissions, and the community

views expressed at the hearing. This is occurring at the Council meeting on 23 August 2017 in the Council Chamber. Council has appreciated the input from the public to date and hopes that the outcome of this bylaw process will represent what Nelsonians want for their city centre. We appreciate the patience the public has shown, this is a complicated process and Council must follow due process. Mayor Rachel Reese expressed her deep concern for the current situation. “We are becoming increasingly concerned about the situation that is escalating on Trafalgar Street. This is having an impact on both retailers and the public in this area. I have been in constant contact with the Police Area Commander to ensure Nelsonians' concerns about public safety issues are well communicated." “Nelson peoples' tolerance is being tested. People should not be in a situation where they are concerned about their safety. We are looking at all avenues to try and expedite our bylaw process to help resolve this situation in a legally binding manner. To resolve this current situation will require a multiagency approach, and we continue to engage with all other agencies to ensure help is available at every level. We would like to remind people that if they have an immediate concern about their safety then please contact the Police.” “We all acknowledge that the behaviour occurring is impacting negatively on many people, particularly businesses and employees in this area. We ask Nelsonians to show their loyalty by continuing to support those businesses who are a valuable part of our community.”
Next steps for Tahunanui Cycleway project Following the recent decision by the Works and Infrastructure Committee to ask staff to revisit the Tahunanui Cycleway, a new approach has been approved by Council. Based on the clear message from the previous public submissions, the new approach places much stronger emphasis on including key stakeholders and the community in developing the final outcome of a preferred route for the cycleway. With this in mind, a two stage approach will be used.

The first includes the formation of an advisory group including Chair of the Works and Infrastructure Committee Stuart Walker, Councillor Matt Lawrey, a representative of Bicycle Nelson Bays, a representative of the New Zealand Transport Agency and Council staff. This group will focus on possible options before moving to the second stage which will involve targeted consultation with the Tahunanui community to finalise a specific route. The goal, as presented in the report, is to agree a final option for implementation which will be presented to the Works and Infrastructure Committee for approval around March 2018.

Volunteers stepping up to plant our public spaces Planting eco-sourced native plants serves many different purposes. It stabilises erosion prone land and river banks, provides habitat for birds, helps shade streams for native fish and invertebrate populations, maintains the distinctiveness of species native to the region, and just adds to our beautiful, natural landscape. Council’s school planting programme, which has been running for 30 years, has seen 2000 students from 15 different schools planting across the region this year. Thank you to all the volunteers involved in this winter’s planting season, including Nelson Rotary Clubs, Forest and Bird, Nelson College for Girls Envirogroup, Nelson College, Nelson Intermediate, Z Fuel Stoke, Nelson Mountain Bike Club, Friends of the Maitai, Marsden Valley Trapping Group, and the Enner Glynn Brownies. Our next community planting day is at the Tantragee Reserve in the Brook Valley on Saturday 3 September, from 11am – 2pm, all welcome. Wear sturdy footwear, and bring a spade if you have one. We will provide some
light refreshments but bring a picnic if you wish. Mel McColghan from Waima-ori and Tim Olley from Fish & Wildlife will be there to talk about some of the work we have been doing in our streams and the life that lives in them. The awards were designed to recognise the contribution made by people and organisations towards protecting against pests and diseases that pose a risk to New Zealand’s economy, environment, cultural and social values and health. The Department of Conservation’s Great White Butterfly Eradication Project within Nelson won the top award in the Government section and received the Supreme award. As part of the Top of the South Marine Biosecurity Partnership, Nelson City Council received a highly commended award in the Government section.

Biosecurity success recognised Nelson’s commitment to biosecurity was recognised recently at the inaugural New Zealand Biosecurity Awards ceremony, held on Wednesday 2 August at Parliament.

We hear from people who have parked illegally “I’m only here for a minute!” but it only takes a second for tragedy to strike. Our children can’t be seen if we park illegally. When children arrive or leave school each day,
your driving behaviour can either protect or endanger them. Drivers and children need good visibility around schools to be able to see each other so please choose safe parking every time. Nelson City Council also has an ongoing programme of working with schools to provide safe options for kids to walk, scooter or cycle to school with the aim of reducing congestion at the school gates.

It was a bittersweet win for Year 13 winner Lara Endersby at this years’ Alliance Francaise regional Concours Oral (French-speaking competition), held at the New Life Centre. The Nelson College for Girls student won the Year 12 regional and national Concours Oral competitions last year, meaning she was eligible to compete, but not eligible to represent the region at this years’ nationals. It means that second-place Year 13 student, Waimea College’s Daniel Leaper, is heading to Wellington in a little over two weeks’ time, with a chance to win the grand prize of an all-expenses-paid two-week trip to New Caledonia. “It’s such a generous prize and such a good way to get people involved,” says Lara. “It was a really fun day and nice to be able to speak French all day.” Last year, both regional winners, Lara (Year 12) and Georgia Dunn, the Year 13 winner from Waimea College, went on to win the nationals and the trip to New Caledonia. With a one-in-seven chance at the nationals, Daniel’s eyes are squarely on the prize. “Sean [Reilly who placed third] and I have been working really hard. “We’ve been going to the Alliance Francaise café conversations at La Gourmandise on

Fridays with Lara to prepare. “It’s very cool winning – it’s been on my mind all week.” Also heading up to the Concours Oral nationals is firsttime entrant, Year 12 winner Lola Beinert, from Nelson College for Girls. “It was awesome,” she says. “I didn’t know what to expect because I hadn’t done it before, but everyone was really nice and made me feel comfortable.” For the 54 students from across the top of the south it is a true day of French immersion. One-by-one the students are ushered into a room where they meet two judges who get them to read and explain text
and pictures in French to assess their conversational level. The rest of the day is spent singing, playing games and competing in quizzes – all in French.Prizes are awarded to the top three for each year level with the top Year 12 and Year 13 students representing the region at the nationals. Alliance Francaise has been hosting the awards for 20 years. They are part of a worldwide network, dedicated to encouraging interest in the French language, culture and literature. The group is open to anyone interested in all things French with the aim of connecting people through language and culture.

Lighthouse Nelson is the quintessential, family-owned business. Established 50 years ago, it has been run by the Brewerton family ever since and continues to have the support of a loyal, local client base. Joice and Lester Brewerton started Brewerton Electrical in the 1950s, with Lester putting the first electrical wiring into many houses in the Ngatimoti and Dovedale areas. With this came the need for new appliances, which is why they also sold washing machines, freezers and stoves. They even purchased 65 Collingwood St and modified part of the family home to accommodate the retail shop. In the 1970s, Joice and Lester expanded into lighting before their son Richard and his wife Tina

took over the business in the 1990s, running it for the next 15 years. With the business now separated in two, Richard still owns and operates Brewerton Electrical while his sister Jenny Knight, purchased Lighthouse Nelson. What makes the history of the Brewerton business even more interesting is that Lighthouse Nelson still operates out of the same building at 65 Collingwood St, although it looks very different to the family home they started out in. The building was already 100 years old when Jenny was a little girl and she remembers taking handmade nails into morning talk at school after her dad had found them when renovating. Sister-in-law Tina is also involved, offering a lighting design service to customers through her own business, Tina Brewerton - Lighting by Design. “People used to just plonk a lightbulb in the middle of a room and that was it, now we do lots of layering with general lighting, task lighting and accent lighting,” says Jenny. “We can talk with our clients and work out the purpose of each room and what kind of feel they want, helping them to put their personality into the lighting, enhance their home décor and show off all their effort in
their new build or renovation.” As part of their 50-year celebration, Jenny and the team have created Storey Collection, a new website and online showroom that features selected lighting, furniture and home décor ranges and allows people to browse the catalogues from the comfort

They’re curious, they’re cheeky and they’re native to this beautiful country. Kea are certainly a special type of bird, with big personalities to boot, and Natureland Wildlife Trust is proud to be part of the conservation effort of these intelligent creatures with the opening of their new Kea Aviary. “Last year we opened our first new habitats to Natureland, which were part of our Conservation Corner, with our Breed for Release and our work with Project Janszoon,” says Natureland director, Meg Rutledge. “That really signalled our shift and commitment towards becoming a community conservation centre, and after we opened that, we thought about how could continue to build on the momentum and on our vision of collaborative conservation and Kea was the obvious answer for us.” Many people don’t realise how important Kea are in the Nelson region. They’re often associated with Arthurs Pass, Fiordland and the higher Southern Alps, but in fact, their range does extend to the local area, however, the

breeding population here appears to be under more stress. “With this project, we are focusing on conservation that is relevant to the Nelson Tasman region and we really wanted our first impression, as people come in to Natureland, to match our vision for the centre,” says Meg. “They are an endangered species, so we wanted to showcase Kea and some
of our sponsors were keen to come on board, so it’s turned into a fantastic community project.” The brand-new Kea aviary is also the centre’s first major project that visitors will be able to experience by walking through, allowing an up close and personal encounter between human and bird. At the moment, Natureland has

reflects their commitment to creating a culture within their organisation that celebrates the wildlife,” says Meg. “We had a really great project with the Kea Conservation Trust where a number of the young male Kea in the area were looking for fun and found Nelson Forest Ltd’s forestry equipment. So, we worked with the trust on trying to give the Kea something else to do. Nelson Forest Ltd was really keen to not see the Keas behaviour as negative or as a problem, but really an opportunity to realise that our space is also their space and how we can work together. So I think the partnership we formed during the Kea aviary project is just an extension of that desire both of us have to celebrate how intelligent and curious Kea are.” Gibbons Construction were also major sponsors of the aviary, Davis Ogilvie provided all of the architecture pro bono, while support from Nelson City Council, Rata Foundation, Pub Charity and Mainland Foundation was also much appreciated. Named Holly and Solitaire, neither Kea is shy and are always keen to meet people, which is why the centre has made sure the birds can also be viewed from outside the aviary, in case visitors aren’t keen on having such a large beak in close proximity.
While the Keas are a big point of interest within Natureland, a number of other animals call the centre home, including exotic creatures such as primates, meerkats and porcupines, and several other New Zealand native species. “We also have domestic animals that highlight the history of Nelson’s agricultural background, and because we’re so conservation driven,

we have tried to work with the rare domestic species and heritage breeds, which are also under threat,” says Meg. Natureland embraces interaction with some of their scheduled keeper talks involving a handson experience or the chance to make something that will then be given to the animals. Winter tournament hits Nelson Andrew Board Hundreds of intermediate-aged students from across the top of the South Island took part in the annual Nelson Intermediate School Sports Association's Winter Tournament last week. Students participated in hockey, mountain biking, basketball, netball, volleyball, badminton, rugby and football. In all, 13 schools from Nelson, Marlbourgh, West Coast and Golden Bay took part. Netball was the most popular sport
with around 250 students competing in that alone. Rain on Thursday cancelled all rugby and football games, but they were able to play a condensed competition on Friday when the sun came out. Organiser Shelley Roberts of Waimea Intermediate School says the tournament was a huge success. “It’s becoming more and more of a logical challenge, because we’re getting so many kids now wanting to participate. But it’s such a great event and so popular and even the rain couldn't ruin it.”

Motocross for young riders The Nelson Motorcycle Club is staging an event for the younger motocross riders at MotoXPark in Eighty-Eight Valley this weekend to replace the cancelled Tasman secondary schools’ champs. The new team’s event has been extended to include mini motocross riders aged from four to 16 years. It will also have a community focus with riders competing for one of seven Nelson charities, and
all proceeds from the event also going to the charities. One of the organisers Delwyn Leitch says they are “fortunate to have some great sponsors on board” including Placemakers, Star Moving, Nelson Brake Services, Tyres and More, Stainless Steel Concepts, Leitch Contracting and Barnett Construction. All proceeds from the event will go to Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter,
Fifeshire Foundation, SPCA, Angels Trio, Nelson Tasman Regional Hospice Trust, Waimea College Special Education Department and the Nelson Breast and Gynaecological Cancer Trust. Delwyn says the MotoXPark is in pristine condition for the event. “If you imagine the Nelson BMX track on steroids, that's what we have here in Wakefield with a table top
section featuring a 35m tabletop,” she says. “There's also a huge step-up jump, a roller section and a sawdust section crammed into the two minute laps.” Entry is by a gold coin donation, with spectators voting for the charity that they support. The charity with the most votes will receive all the gate takings. Racing starts at 10am on Saturday and Sunday.

It’s been a little over two years, but for 17-year-old cheerleader and head coach Annabel Noar, that’s all it took to go from the lowest point of her life to the highest. Discovery of a tumour in her leg in April 2015 saw the former dancer and gymnast taking up cheerleading to help with her post-surgery recovery and rehabilitation. “It used to be something that me and my little sister [Joelle] did," Annabel says. But thanks to her mother Maxine Noar, they now run Electrix Cheerleading which has more than 100 cheerleaders, male and female. Maxine, Annabel and her friend Paige Byers, have
qualified as cheerleading coaches. Paige initially took up cheerleading to support her friend, but has fallen in love with the sport. “I’ve become really attached – there’s all of these kids and I’d do anything for them. "I like that it’s family oriented – anyone can join.” Now the club has taken the next step in its growth, moving into their new home at Flip Out in Tahunanui. “For the past two years we’ve had to use facilities at different locations and the junior and senior teams didn’t get to practice together, so we needed our own home,” says Maxine. “It’s great to have purposebuilt facilities with a sprung floor.” Waimea Intermediate stu-
dent Charlotte DanielsonWatts, 13, joined Electrix one year ago, and this weekend she captained the junior team in the two-day Olympia cheer competition in Auckland. Electrix took two of their nine teams up to the competition – the first time they have entered full teams in the competitions. “Both teams got great marks which is amazing for our first team comp, and our soloist, Issy Anderson, came second, which was fantastic,” says Maxine. “I’m so proud of how hard they worked.” Maxine says that a lot of people don’t appreciate the physicality of cheerleading. Competitive cheerleading is light on pom poms and sequins, but heavy on synchronicity, teamwork and athleticism, she says.
Every routine must include four elements – stunting, jumps, tumbling and dance. Despite the skill and technique required, Maxine says it brings kids to sport that may not go to sport or who might be intimidated by other sports. And the club's new home is only the start. Year 13 students Annabel and Paige want to take on Electrix full-time next year when they finish school with plans to grow the sport. “All the competitions are in the North Island so I would love to grow cheerleading in the South Island,” says Annabel.
