Every weekday afternoon the scenario is the same at the Parkers Rd intersection in Tahunanui. A driver wanting to turn right onto Annesbrook Dr and head towards Stoke and Richmond will edge up to the corner and wait for the coast to be clear. And they will continue waiting.
The traffic will bank up behind them, trucks, cars and all manner of motorists. But they won’t realise there is a merging lane which allows them to go right ahead. “Sometimes it can get pretty confused,” says deputy mayor Paul Matheson. Add to that the ever-increasing number of heavy trucks using that road to access the port and it becomes a thornier issue. The intersection has long been on council and NZTA’s radar but
Matheson plans on raising it again as concerns rise over the congestion which the area has experienced as it’s become increasingly industrialised. NZTA’s latest stats show that the area has also had a small increase in traffic due to the Kaikoura earthquakes. A spokesperson says according to NZTA research there has not been any increase in turning traffic over the last few years. However, Paul says the nature of the area has changed.
“We have had discussions over a period of time about putting lights in there,” says Paul. “The trouble is the mixture of traffic has changed. Now we have far more industrial traffic.” Paul says he is going to raise the issue at this month’s regional transport committee. “It’s probably one we need to brush over again.” John Gilbertson of the Tahunanui Business Association agrees. “A lot heavier purpose trucks are
using those roads and it gets difficult with those trucks exiting Parkers Rd at times.” John says it’s high time the current situation is reviewed as it has become a safety issue. He says putting traffic lights in at Parkers Rd would also provide a useful crossing point for cyclists and school children from Stoke wanting to get on the right side of the road. “I don’t know where they are at with it but I do think it needs to be brought forward,” John says.

Shops hanging out for more baskets Kate Russell Local retailers are calling out some national chain stores for not getting behind the Nelson City Council’s hanging basket programme. The council is considering ways to encourage more stores to take part and recently sent out a survey to get more information on possible barriers. Last summer, 75 businesses took part – but local store owner Glen Beattie from Beetees says he would like to see the gaps filled. “It’s a shame the majority of chain stores don’t seem to participate,” says the Trafalgar St retailer. “When it comes to local promotions they seem happy to ride on the back of local retailers, but not contribute - and a lot of them don’t - when you walk along the street in summer, you’ll see that.” The initiative costs about $80,000

per year, and CBD stores are charged $40 per hanging basket, or $120 if they are outside of the city centre. “$40 per basket is a very cheap investment to assist in brightening up the CBD area and the more we can do to encourage it to look good and encourage people to come here, the better,” Glen says. Store contributions account for
about 25 per cent of the total costs, with the remainder coming from the council and parking meter revenue. Managing director of locally owned Taylors Shoes, Craig Taylor, also says the $40 fee “is a small part to play”. Nelson Weekly spoke to several store managers who have never participated in the programme, and it seemed to be a case of

them wanting to participate, but not being allowed to. Cotton On Nelson store manager, Ashley McCabe says her head office makes the call. “I’d do it if it were up to me.” But Anja Rausch of chain footwear store Hannahs, says their head office willingly pays the fee. “It has a big impact for us.” Nelson City Council spokesperson Paul Shattock says responses to the survey had been largely positive but there were always retailers who chose not to take part. The hanging basket programme started in 2000 and wouldn’t be possible without hundreds of community volunteers and Nelmac staff. Paul says the plants have been ordered for this season, and they are planning for 600 baskets this summer, which be up from early December until around Easter.

Detective Dean Schroder has been awarded a Police Commissioner’s Commendation, for his work in talking down a suicidal armed offender. In presenting the award on Friday, Area Commander Mathew Arnold-Kelly said that the “quite rare and prestigious honour” was in recognition of the “bravery and professionalism he demonstrated in resolving a very difficult situation”. Dean, who was working in Cromwell at the time with partner Detective Gary Hyndman, said that it was an incredibly tense situation as the “mentally unstable man was threatening to commit suicide” and was armed with a semiautomatic rifle. “We couldn’t walk away, even to help ourselves,” he says. He credits his partnership with Gary for their ability “to talk him around and disarm him”. He was happy that no one was injured and that they could get the man the mental health treatment he needed. Also awarded was Community Patrol stalwart Laurie Christian, who received a District Commander’s Commendation for 24 years service as a dedi-

Laurie, who monitors the cameras during night watch, received the award to rapturous applause from the police. He is a founding member of the Nelson Community Patrol, initially doing patrol work before moving to night watch, and prior to this was a firefighter for 21 years. He says that he enjoys “the comradeship and support of all of the police staff ” and that he “won’t be stopping anytime soon”. Mat acknowledged that “our communities demand a high level of service and our role is to deliver this, and more, but

It’s the sort of business that found Sean Davies praying for rainy days. After all, with cold, horrible weather comes a demand to rug up inside with a good movie. “You become the Grinch really,” says Sean, who owns the Video Ezy in Stoke. But lately he hasn’t seen the winter pick-up in trade. That, combined with the challenging time to be in the video rental market and a desire to move on, has seen Sean and his team decide to call it quits. The store will shut down next month leaving just one video rental store in Nelson and one in Richmond. “I do feel for the customers in the
area who now will have to travel further,” Sean says. “We have some customers who don’t have the internet or travel, so they are the ones who will be affected the most.” They will stop renting on August 7 and then just focus on selling stock. Right now, all DVDs are for sale for between $5 and $15. He says it’s a sign of the times. “Three years ago, there were 60 Video Ezy stores in New Zealand - now there are only 20.” But Sean already has plans for another business. He is opening a backpackers on Beach Rd in Tahunanui and hopes to have it open in September for the summer months. Then he will be praying for sunny days.

Nemo a best friend for Blake Journalist

When five-year-old Blake Costello is dropped by taxi back home every afternoon after school, Nemo will be waiting for him. At first, Nemo will act as a loyal guard dog and bark over his concern for Blake arriving in a strange car. But then that concern will melt into something different. He will run out the door of their home and excitedly jump up all over Blake. In most households, this would be expected - a dog and his boy. But this relationship is different to most. Blake has severe, non-verbal autism and Nemo is an assistance dog - specially trained for Blake’s needs. “I learned a long time ago that there is
no such thing as normal,” says Blake’s mum Anna. The family received Nemo last December from Assistance Dogs New Zealand Trust (ADNZT) which is dedicated to matching dogs with people with different needs. The dogs can be trained and bred to help people with everything from Down syndrome to cerebral palsy. In Blake’s case, the hope was that Nemo would allow Blake to be able to walk around town and to school, without running away. “And he is a runner,” says Anna. Their home is surrounded by tall fences and hard to reach latches. Before Nemo, the idea of even walking into Richmond would not be entertained. But now Blake can be attached to his dog via a special harness. Blake knows that Nemo is there to help him. But also, Anna says their relationship
has become more than that. “There is a friendship growing. It’s slow, but it’s there.” Nemo used to walk Blake down the road to Henley School but as Blake became stronger that walk has become more temperamental. For now, they use a taxi. Next week is ADNZT’s annual appeal to help raise the $48,000 needed for each dog’s training. It trains 15 labrador puppies or retrievers each year, but there 74 families with young children on the waiting list for dogs. Anna feels lucky that they could get Nemo after 18 months as the waitlist is now about four years long. She was never a “dog person” but says Nemo has slotted into the family perfectly. Moncrieff finds life on arts festival stage Charles Anderson Journalist

Elisabeth Easther had never heard of Perrine Moncrieff when it was suggested that the Nelson conservationist’s life might make for a great dramatic work. Elisabeth was working on editing an anthology of bird writing for Penguin Random House when she first learned of Moncrieff ’s name. One of the anthology’s authors suggested her life could make a good one woman show. So Easther, a renowned actress, writer and playwright, went about searching for everything she could find on her. “I thought ‘holy shag’ how is this woman not already on a five dollar note?” After setting in Nelson, Moncrieff became a conservationist before it was popular. She was pioneering ornithologist who saw the connection between the birds, forests and human survival. Moncrieff was

Photo: Supplied a writer of classic ornithological texts, plus a romance novel, but her greatest legacy was her part in the creation of the Abel Tasman National Park, all while accompanied by her pet macaw. Elisabeth knew there was enough material to make something significant. The challenge then became to make it a dramatic work. The result is “Birds of a feather” which is a work in progress that will be read at the Nelson
Arts Festival in October. The programme for the festival was launched last week at an event at the Theatre Royal. The idea of the “festival in progress” started with last year when the festival team supported “Maungatapu”. This year that play has returned to the festival as a fully-fledged production. The same is hoped for Elisabeth’s play. Not that she regards herself as a “bird person”, but she became fascinated with Moncrieff ’s life. “Birds are so vulnerable here and I love that Perrine came along when they really required someone to look out for them.” Elisabeth says the themes the play touches on are just as relevant today. “We still have huge problems [with conservation] and Perrine needs to be remembered somehow. So, this play tries to do that - to show how extraordinary she was.” It might not be a five dollar note - but it’s a start.

They came from every corner of Nelson for support, advice and camaraderie. Twenty-seven dairy and store owners banded together in the Nelson City Council chambers on Friday morning to address the spate of robberies in the region during the last four months. Nelson, Stoke, Hope, Wakefield, Appleby and Lower Moutere stores were all well represented. And, it didn’t matter if they had been hit or not - they just wanted reassurance that their store wasn’t going to be the next one to be targeted. Mayor Rachel Reese, Nelson city councillors, Neighbourhood Support, Victim Support and Nelson Police were there to facilitate the meeting, which saw attendees split into five groups, with each having to “brainstorm” ideas that could help protect their stores. Some ideas that came from the meeting were being more “aware” of their surroundings, sharing information, more security for cigarette cabinets, more signage,
CCTV cameras, improved lighting and helping owners feel more comfortable to speak to police. It was also suggested that Nelson police should re-establish their Victory and Tahunanui community bases. Victory Discounter Dairy man-

to do to make us safe.” Tim Crawford from Nelson Police said at the meeting that they would be “front footing” the issue by being more visible with their patrols and helping owners improve their environmental design.
"Our role is to facilitate and work with these businesses." He also said that the Government rolled out $1.8 million last month to police nationwide to help prevent robberies. They will be helping dairies that have been hit, by splitting the cost of “big ticket” security items, such as fog cannons. Fog cannons can fill rooms with dense fog in a few seconds, which prevents would-be robbers from being able to see. “There are half a dozen businesses that have been targeted and we will be approaching them shortly,” said Tim. But this was questioned by one dairy owner, who didn’t want to be named, asking if they would be “behind in the line” for help. “What about the ones who have not been robbed?” Blair Hall of Nelson Police said he was happy with the turnout and the meeting was a good way to connect with dairy owners and hear their perspective. “I’ve spoken to a few of the owners and they are feeling like they are not alone – we’ll go away from this, meet with council and look at the ideas.”

Putting their best paw forward Jessie Johnston Proud cat owners from around the country put their felines on show on Sunday during Nelson Cat Club’s annual show, held at Hope Recreation Hall. Hundreds of cats lined up to be judged during the event with owners travelling from as far south as Christchurch, as well as from the North Island. The show was also well attended by members of the public who turned out to admire a range of different breeds. Belgrove cat owner Anna Nicholls has been part of the Nelson Cat Club for the last three years, which is also how long she has been involved with showing.
“My mother was actually involved in the cat club and when she passed away, to keep her memory alive, I decided to join,” says Anna. “I just love the Burmese breed, mainly because they’re the closest thing to a dog. I grew up with them and all of the ones I’ve had would play fetch, they’re just so laid back.” Anna started out with a Burmese male named Zion, which she also used to start her breeding business. Lola and Otis, who Anna entered into Sunday’s show, are Zion’s offspring and were two from Anna’s first litter. Six judges on the day determined the best of the best, with two making the journey

Wrestling a cheesy, fantastic night out Andrew Board Where did I spend my Saturday night? In a church, watching grown men in Speedos wrestle. More specifically, it was the New Zealand version of WWE – Impact Pro Wrestling New Zealand. It was as bizarre as you could imagine, as cheesy, and yet strangely, highly entertaining. The ring was set up in the main room at Annesbrook Church, the lighting was excellent, the big screens and music for the entrances were great and photographers and videographers buzzed around the ring capturing the grimaces and wild faces. I’m no expert, but the wrestling was impressive. They flipped, jumped off the top rope and threw each other into steel barriers. It looked like it hurt. And the story lines were fantastic, not in the sense they were good, but that they were steeped in fantasy. Here were a few of my favourite lines from various fights: “Payback’s a bitch,” from one wrestler to another before receiving a slap to the chest that not only floored him but left him reeling in pain for several minutes. Another wrestler taunted the crowd that he went to a “private school in Wellington”, supposedly confirming his status as a bad guy. Another “bad guy”, an Englishman whose
did leave a bad taste, especially when they pulled the middle finger to the “bad guy” as they did it. Without a doubt the highlight was watching local man “Brook Duncan”, aka Duncan McDougall, compete for the light heavyweight championship. Duncan had great support in the crowd, including from his three brothers who later took centre stage in the script. Duncan didn’t win unfortunately, but he did himself and his family proud. His athleticism was something to behold and he certainly entertained the crowd – surely the job description. At the end of the night the announcer told the crowd that they would be back in Nelson, and as a three hour show of entertainment you could do far worse. It was fun, it was ridiculous, it was impressive and those who did turn up had a blast. The committee would love to make it an annual event, and planning for next year's event will start once the committee has a much-needed break!” Jack, 14, hoping for his first bike, Tuesday, July 25: 14-year-old Jack Roberts, who has Kabuki Syndrome, is well on the way to getting his first bike, with some donations coming in since the article was published in last week’s Nelson Weekly. Jack’s Mum, Sue Roberts, says they have managed to raise $695 on the Givealittle page so far. “We have had some lovely comments and people are so generous. I know people have their own families to support and look after, so it’s amazing to have people respond. Water: an issue for us all The sad news that a group of faceless people have circulated a leaflet to local residents urging a stop to the proposed Waimea Community Dam is a sign that Trump-style politics have arrived in our community. The lack of a fully informed and fact-based public discussion on water issues for the whole region is something we should all be concerned about. Water issues are not new, best illustrated by the fact that the current dam proposal is the result of 16 years work by a diverse group of stakeholders. That early and persistent work identified water shortages and Waimea River health to be major problems. The difficulties experienced in consenting water storage projects in other parts of the country are already resolved here. The issue now is how much will the dam cost and who will pay. The fears that have been aroused by deliberate misinformation regarding the current proposal need to be put into rational context. There is no doubt that for Nelson Tasman communities, doing nothing is not an option. Parts of our region lack water for critical periods nearly every year, and the interdependence of the two councils means it is a regional issue that affects us all. For Nelson city, the Roding River supply is a critical part of the city’s water resource. The Roding River is a significant tributary of the Wairoa and Waimea river systems and Nelson’s take is also part of the regional issue, given the fact that the Eastern hills catchment is the only significant water resource for the Nelson/Waimea area. Additionally, Tasman District Council supplies water across the boundary to water users in Nelson south. It is for this reason that Nelson city has been involved in the development of the dam proposal right from the outset. It is also important to understand that the dam is the best economic option for a long-term solution to water security in the city. In Tasman, the issue of over-allocation on the Waimea plains, health of the river and the economic consequences of doing nothing are critical and urgent. No one can accuse decision-makers of rushing the process. Sixteen years is already too long and the urgency now is a direct result of failure to address this issue earlier. If the dam proposal does not proceed, water permits on the Waimea plains will be significantly reduced. Those reduced allocations will be subject to regular and significant rationing. Urban supplies will be subject to similar rationing. The independently assessed cost of that is almost $1 billion to the region over the next 25 years. That cost cannot be ignored. The current constructive discussions by the two councils and Waimea Irrigators Ltd are aimed at finding a capital and cost sharing model that gives everyone some certainty that our community can continue to function and prosper. Knowing we have solved the water supply and quality problem for future generations, while making it fair and affordable for ratepayers, is a must-do based on fact, not on pretending there are alternative facts. My home is 38-years-old, and was originally insulated in the ceiling, and had a woodburner. One lot of previous owners removed the woodburner, installed a floor-mounted heat pump, insulated the walls, and also had underfloor insulation installed. This was all done with the assistance of one of the home insulation schemes. My home is nice and cosy. I can heat the living area and the bedrooms from the heat pump. Winter power bill - under $150 a month. Insulation is the key, and also keep a home well ventilated to minimise damp. Dennis Goodman. Nelson City Brass Band stars shine at worlds Simon Bloomberg The Nelson City Brass Band’s stellar year continued when six of its members helped the National Band of New Zealand finish second at the World Music Contest in the Netherlands. The Nelson band made a winning start to the year defending its C Grade title at the New Zealand Brass Band Championships in Wellington in May. Late last month, six of the band’s members enjoyed success on the international stage as part of the national band which finished second in the Championship Grade at the world champs in Kerkrade. Nelson City Brass band secretary Wayne Jennens says it’s a “fantastic” achievement to have six Nelson musicians in the 37-member national band. “The band is made up of the very best players in the country – they are the All Blacks of the brass band movement in New Zealand,” Wayne says. The Nelson contingent included musical director Nigel Weeks, soprano cornet Kay MacKenzie, principal horn Mike Ford and cornet players Steve and Alice Rudhall and John McGough. The Rudhalls have just moved to Wellington while John McGough is based in Auckland. Wayne says the Nelson band is “immensely proud of them all” and “exceptionally proud” of the achievements of their musical director.
“Nigel is the one responsible for making the band play and sound as good as it did, and it showed he is the equal of some of the top musical directors in the world,” Wayne says. Mike also paid tribute to Nigel, saying they only had a limited time to prepare for the worlds and Nigel did “a fantastic job” bringing them together. The band performed four concerts while rehearsing in New Zealand before performing one in Hong Kong on the way to the Netherlands and three in the Netherlands leading up to the worlds. Nelmac walks away with top award Simon Bloomberg A challenging project that required a combination of specialist technology and old school methods won the Hirepool Supreme Award at the Nelson Marlborough Civil Contractors Federation Awards held at Annesbrook Church on Friday night. The award went to Nelmac for the Suter Art Gallery Landscaping project that was a key element in the $12million redevelopment of the Nelson’s historic art gallery. Nelmac designed and installed a new boardwalk through native bush outside the gallery that connects the gallery to the neighbouring Queens Gardens and features the Pastorius Waller International Sculpture Walk. Although constructing a boardwalk may sound straightforward, Nelmac’s Belinda Reburn and Richard Smethurst say working in a unique environment like the Queens Gardens presented many challenges. “There was nothing simple about this project,” Belinda says. “We had to work amongst the heritage trees so there were a lot of resource consent conditions around the project. “The guys were hand-digging around the tree roots to put the

There were a lot of on-site decisions because we were working in such a sensitive environment - it was a very challenging project.” Richard says they used small excavators at the start of the project but then had “go back to old school of wheelbarrows and hand-digging” as they worked around the roots of heritage trees. In some areas, arborists used “hydro-vac equipment” to wash out and vacuum up soil around tree
roots so that boardwalk foundations could be installed. One of the judges, Bruce Taylor says Nelmac did a great job of working in such a restricted workspace under tight resource consent conditions. Bruce encouraged everyone attending Friday’s awards to go to the Suter and wanderer around the boardwalk to see the result of a wellmanged project. The big budget Hynds Projects Award, valued over $1.5million, went to Donaldson Civil Ltd for the Nelson City Council Hampden Street Little Go Stream Up-
grade. The $4.7million project involved upgrading stormwater system along Waimea Rd to prevent a repeat of the flooding that hit Nelson College and Rutherford St in 2011. Donaldson Civil director Gary Donaldson says one of the biggest challenges was managing peak traffic flows while laying the stormwater pipes in the middle of Waimea Rd. “We looked at the site mid-morning when we were tendering for the contract, so we underestimated the volumes of traffic when everyone’s driving to school and
work. We had a 2.5m wide trench in the middle of a 7m wide road, so keeping the guys safe and having two lanes of traffic going was a challenge.” Despite those challenges, Gary says they finished the project ahead of schedule. Starting out with just one staff member, they have developed the business to the point where the Tyres & More team now numbers eleven and all have special skills that complement each other. “The more complex technical issues are often resolved by a brain storming session over a coffee,” says Adrian. In the beginning, Adrian took care of the tyre and mechanical work while Vivienne did all the accounting and administration work behind the scenes. “It’s hard work being a small business owner, we are frequently working late at night on the paperwork and we balance this with caring for our adult disabled son. I have a great deal of respect for all those other business owners out there,” says Adrian. Adrian now mainly oversees day-to-day operation while Vivienne still does the vast majority of the administration, as well as greeting customers.

The Nelson Tasman Emergency Response Team, known as NZ-RT2, is the operational arm of the Nelson Tasman CDEM Group. The team specialises in urban search and light rescue, and also has a role in all types of civil defence emergencies, in particular, flood and storm response, collapsed buildings, landslips and welfare provision. The team is available 24/7, is fully selfsufficient and kitted out with a rescue truck, team welfare trailer, technical rescue gear, tools and radios. made them not play as well. It was very frustrating." Richmond had to win the game to win the title but went down to Waimea College 1-0 mid-way through the second half. The Foxes rallied with a goal to Rhea Hopkinson before a late winner to Jimi Slotemaker. John says, despite his dis-
pleasure at the way they won, he was proud of his team. "They've done really well and improved as the season went on. They train well so I'm really pleased for them." The title is Richmond Athletic's third out of a possible four this year, with its top team winning the on-going first division.

The Crusaders played a Super Rugby semi-final in front of a not-so-super semi-crowd on Saturday night. There have been various excuses mentioned on social media and predictions of the demise of rugby announced on talkback radio. But the Tasman Rugby Union should be using it as an opportu-
nity to push the case for Nelson to host more regular Super Rugby games. One of the excuses, along with the cold, that has been used is that there is too much rugby for the Christchurch market. Fine, let us take a game or two off your hands. Nelsonians only get three professional rugby games at Trafalgar Park a year, due to sharing the Makos with Blenheim. The city could easily fill our stadium for a

Super Rugby game once or twice a year. And remember, Tasman is a union in the Crusaders franchise, a union whose team reached the final in last year’s Mitre 10 Cup and a union that provides a decent chunk of players to the Crusaders. Why do we get overlooked when Christchurch can’t even sell out its tiny ground for a semi-final? The last Crusaders game to be hosted in Nelson was in 2015.
On that occasion the Crusaders were forced to play outside of Christchurch’s AMI Stadium as it was already booked for the Under 20 FIFA world cup. Nelson was only picked after a push from Crusaders management to get the game moved to Fiji didn’t pan out. A full house of over 16,000 people packed Trafalgar Park for that game. Tasman Rugby Union CEO Tony Lewis says Tasman is ready and waiting to host the Crusaders,
telling Nelson Weekly, “the position of the Tasman Rugby Union is that we are willing to assist our partners and host the Crusaders any time they want to play in Nelson.” If the Crusaders continue to ignore us at the expense of rubbish crowds in Christchurch then Tasman should pull stumps and find another Super rugby franchise to line up with, like Taranaki did in 2013 when it left the Hurricanes for the Chiefs.

Nelson College’s Thomas and Sam’s under-19 team weren’t quite so dominant, dropping two pool games before losing 2-1 to Great Britain in the semi-final. Earlier in pool play they lost 5-2 to the British. “We were really gutted, we scored really early in the game and then couldn’t score again,” says Sam. The Brits rallied and scored the winner right at the end of the game. “It was horrible, but we were determined to win the third and fourth playoff game,” says Thomas. “We had to come home with a medal.” And they did, destroying Australia 5-0 to claim the bronze.

Died of his wounds 3rd August 1917. 2nd Lieut Royal Engineers, was commissioned in the field in May 1915 and awarded the Military Cross for gallantry in June 1917. At the start of the 3rd Battle of Ypres, his section came under intense German bombardment. Ordering his men to stay in shelter he went out to repair a break in a telegraph wire, While doing so, he was seriously wounded and died 3 days later in the Casualty Clearing Station near Lijessenthoek, where he is now buried. He was 24 years old. Not forgotten by his greatnephews James and Michael, and great-nieces, Jane, Susan, Joanna and Barbara.
